The bulbed fin keel ensures leeway (Side slip) is reduced and stiffens the yacht allowing her to carry the sail area the tall rig allows (Air draft 92’). The spade twin rudders minimize upwind sailing angles and provide the best traction when heeled. The wrap-around window, over-sized port lights and a full 17’3″ beam that carries well aft creates a Superyacht sense of space and comfort.

INTERIOR SPACES & LAYOUTS

Working closely with the Italian interior design team Hot Lab this yacht oozes style from stem to stern. Three or four cabin layouts are available. The Hylas touch comes to the for with wood type, grain direction, cabinetry design and facings options. Numerous color and texture choices for seats, surfaces and liners are available.  Every Hylas interior is slightly different with unique features. Many of our standard offerings have come from improvements driven by client usage and change requests. We listen closely to what our clients want, give guidance from the experience of others and believe strongly that adaptability and continuous improvement should be vigorously pursued and not simply accepted.

Hylas 60 first look: Virtual tour brings this stunning new model to life

Yachting World

  • August 27, 2020

With transatlantic boat viewings off the cards for now, American yard Hylas Yachts has employed innovative measures to showcase its new Hylas 60

COVID-19 lockdown saw a bonanza of virtual boat shows and there’s every chance they are here to stay. A well executed virtual experience can give potential buyers a good feel for a particular design before they even rock up at an exhibition or a dealer’s dock.

Hylas was quick to realise this and released an excellent virtual tour of its three-cabin version of the new Hylas 60.

The first example of this twin-rudder German Frers design that’s aimed at the European market is now on the water. It’s a stunning yacht, with a new look for the brand including plumb bow, broad transom and clean, uncluttered foredeck.

The contemporary styling is married to a powerful, yet easily handled, rig with hydraulic in-mast furling and a choice of a 105% headsail or a self-tacking jib. There’s also a self-tacking staysail for use in heavy weather, while asymmetric kites and code sails can be flown from the fully integrated sprit.

The yard partnered with Milan-based Hot Lab to create what chief interior designer Enrico Lumini describes as: “…keeping the traditional feeling of a pure sailing yacht interior, yet contemporary and tranquillity-inspiring”.

Keel options comprise bulbed fins with 2.00m or 2.50m draught, or a telescopic lifting keel. Cruising conveniences include a self-deploying anchor, hydraulic swim platform and optional automated passerelle. CZone digital switching is a standard fit for controlling interior systems.

The virtual tour allows you to step through the entire interior of a three-cabin model, from the forward guest cabins to the owner’s aft stateroom. Dozens of 360° images have been captured in high definition from close to 40 different locations, making the experience as close as possible to physically being on board. For the best experience you’ll want to look at it on the biggest screen you have.

An important advantage of a virtual tour over real life is the ease with which you can keep going back to check different details. For the Hylas there’s even a measurement mode that allows the dimensions of everything from the chart table size to bunk lengths to be checked – although you won’t be able to physically see how easy it is to get your knees under the chart table, of course.

Nevertheless, the format offers far more than simply a quick view of the boat – it’s easy to spend time looking into intricate detail, from shower arrangements to the neatly laid out engine room.

On deck you can stand behind one of the carbon wheels, while assessing the location of winches, throttle, thruster and pilot controls. Then step forward to the beautifully appointed and well-shaded guest cockpit.

At the moment the format is not quite perfect – a couple of times we found ourselves teleported to the forecabin when attempting to stroll forward to check out the anchoring and headsail arrangements. (Hint: before clicking on one of the 360° icons, hover the mouse over it to reveal a glimpse of what it shows).

While a virtual tour can never be a substitute for seeing a boat in the flesh, this approach can help potential buyers pare down their shortlists. It will also help inform the list of items a prospective buyer might want to check out at a boat show, dealer or factory.

Well produced virtual tours also have the potential to bring a new design to market faster, as manufacturers needn’t be constrained by the calendars of international boat shows. Similar tours could be created using only renders, but it feels more real and far more reassuring when the images are of a completed yacht that is already afloat and in commission.

New Hylas 60 Yacht

Hylas Yachts has earned a reputation for building durable oceangoing vessels with a classic ethos. The new Hylas 60 fits that mold, but adds other dimensions: versatile use as well as contemporary design and creature comforts.

Clean, modern lines is a simple but apt phrase to describe the yacht. So is user-friendly. “If I had to identify a single item that I think makes a huge difference, it would be the hydraulic outhaul that works with the hydraulic in-mast furling,” Kevin Wensley, US sales director for Hylas told Robb Report, noting that it makes setting sail much simpler for a small crew. “There really is no excuse to not set the main, even on the shortest of day sails,” he adds.

With the main up, along with the working jib, the H60 handles easily. The conveniences designed into the 60 include a self-deploying anchor, hydraulic transom swim-platform and a dinghy-garage aft.

The new Hylas 60 Yacht has tech features to make it easy to handle by a small crew or couple, but a seaworthy hull for world cruising.  Bily Black

“Yes, she is a globetrotter,” Wensley says, “but the simplicity of handling, maneuverability and powered furling systems will encourage daily and weekend use.”

For those who appreciate grand designs, the H60’s cored hull keeps the weight down while offering great strength, and the design—drawn by the esteemed German Frers—includes an integral bowsprit, plumb bow and broad transom. Those features combine to provide sail options, seaworthiness and speed to facilitate long-range cruising, as will the twin rudders and an optional telescoping keel.

The styling has a more modern flair than previous models, which adds to the interior comfort.

“Frers has managed to keep the 60 looking sleek and at the same time optimize the interior volume,” Wensley says. The design includes almost six feet of freeboard, a 17-ft. beam, and interior space for three to four staterooms.

“We ended up with a whitish oiled wood, warm polished-nickel elements, and creamy leathers,” says Enrico Lumini, Hot Lab’s chief designer. “All materials and details blend together in an incredibly soft manner, keeping the traditional feeling of a pure sailing yacht interior, yet contemporary.”

The H60, which made her debut at the Miami International Boat Show, carries a base price of $1.7 million.

Hylas Yachts explores new territory with the world debut of the H60 at 2020 Miami Boat Show

Hylas Yachts unveiled the all-new Hylas H60 sailing yacht. The shipyard’s latest cruiser has made its official world debut at the Miami Boat Show 2020 .

The renowned designers German Frers and Hot Lab are responsible for this exciting boat’s exterior and interior look, respectively.

Stylish and oceangoing

Hylas Yachts has collaborated with German Frers for over 40 years and built a reputation for yachts that combine ocean sailing capability, classic lines and exquisitely finished interiors.

Now the company is staking out new territory with the H60 . Still ocean capable, still with an exquisite interior but also embracing some of the contemporary demands of today’s cruising sailors.

The Hylas Yacht H60 is a performance cruiser with all the seaworthy attributes Hylas is known for but boldly embraces the clean sweeping lines of a yacht for owners that want Hylas quality and dependability but favor a more modern look.

“ This new development looks even better in the water than she did on paper, ” says Christian Pschorr, Hylas Service & Program Director .

Longtime Hylas fans will not be disappointed by her performance. Built using the most advanced construction technologies, the H60 has been designed to excel in all conditions with excellent seakeeping ability. A plumb bow and broad transom make the most of her waterline length underway, providing speed with optimal comfort.

“ Her overall style is timeless and we expect this new model to have a long, successful life in the market, ” says Germán Frers .

Smart inside

The builder partnered with Milan-based firm Hot Lab , known for their elegant designs in the superyacht world, to offer interiors that immediately set the new Hylas on a new level. “ We worked in close contact with the yard’s team. The development of a soft and gauzy mood-board has been the result of this relationship, ” says Enrico Lumini ,

partner and interior chief designer at Hot Lab . “ This is how we ended up with a whitish, oiled wood, warm, polished-nickel elements, and creamy leathers. All materials and details which blend together in an incredibly soft manner, keeping the traditional feeling of a pure sailing yacht interior, yet contemporary and tranquility-inspiring. ”

Clean lines are emphasized, taking advantage of the yacht builder’s reputation for fine interior joinery, while exhibiting a stylish and modern sensibility. Large hull-side windows , a cabin trunk surrounded with windows, skylights and overhead hatches all bathe the interior in natural light.

Owners can choose between three- and four-stateroom layouts. The three-stateroom layout places a master suite aft, with a large berth on centerline. A VIP stateroom with queen berth is forward, with private access to a head that is shared with a portside double with up-and-down berths. Amidships, a large salon area with an L-shaped settee with dining table and stools also has a starboard-side settee. The navigation station is to port and a walk-through galley to starboard. The four-stateroom layout places the master in the bow, using the aft sections for a pair of mirrored double staterooms.

Ready to sail

Cockpits are huge and come in two versions according to the owners’ layout preferences. The deck is flush and clean, with all halyards and control lines run in conduits beneath the deck. There are two keel options, both with twin rudder configuration, for positive control under sail in all weather conditions and good maneuvering under power in close quarters. A telescopic keel is also an option.

The sweptback spreader rig is simple and efficient. Runners will be auxiliary, required only in heavy weather or when the self-tacking staysail is set. The main and working jib set up makes for easy boat handling. The generous sail area performs very well and the A sail can be set from the bowsprit without a spinnaker pole. The yacht has every modern cruising convenience, including a self-deploying anchor, a hydraulic transom swim platform and an optional automated passerrelle. A dinghy garage aft eliminates the need for davits and maintains the clean, uncluttered look on deck.

“ At Hylas Yachts, we have proven our yachts can take cruisers around the world in comfort, ” says Andy Huang, CEO of Hylas Yachts . “ As our clients have become increasingly knowledgeable and sophisticated it is imperative we keep up with new looks as well as technologies. We will continue to be very open to customization but with Hot Lab, the H60 will give our clients an optional convenience of a “turnkey package” with enhanced styling. ”

Technology & enhancement

The Hylas 60 represents the next step forward for Hylas Yachts in the performance cruiser market. Embracing the latest construction techniques with cored hulls that deliver improved performance, more rigorous quality assurance techniques and significant strength advantages.

The hull design and sailplan that Frers has created means todays voyaging couples can expect to stretch daily cruising distances and find handling the yacht very manageable when short handed. The introduction of CZone digital switching has made interior system controls easy through portable devices and dedicated touch screens. Even the introduction of the highly efficient Volvo D3 engine brings a more sophisticated level of monitoring and control of the fuel and power systems. As prospective clients tour the yacht and look behind the scenes they will see improvements in every area from fresh water pumps to the use of

hydraulics for in-mast furling, backstay control, vang control and the lowering swim platform that opens up the dinghy garage.

Availability

The Hylas yard continues to be very busy as a number of new power and sail designs have proven very popular in the last couple of years. “ As is the case with most of our models we are keeping a “hull in hand” at the yard to ensure we can deliver the next yacht within a 12 month time frame ”, comments Andy Huang .

The H60 hull number 1 is available with a base price of $1.7 million .

Hylas H60 Wins 2021 Boat of the Year 'Best Luxury Cruiser'

Hylas h60 named best luxury cruising yacht of 2021 , cruising world magazine's 2021 boat of the year 'best luxury cruiser' awarded to hylas yachts for frers designed h60.

The Hylas H60 made its first appearance at the 2020 Miami Boat show and since then, it has received an enormous amount of praise from the sailing community.

The award-winning Hylas H60, designed by renowned naval architect Germán Frers, showcases the creativity and innovation that drives the family-owned and operated  Hylas brand . Hylas Yachts has upheld a tradition of expert craftsmanship, design excellence, and unparalleled attention to detail for over thirty years. In an exciting announcement yesterday, the H60 was declared the winner of Cruising World's 2021 Boat of the Year 'Best Luxury Cruiser' award.

The following is an excerpt from the original press release:

Let’s play a game of “what if.” So what do you think would happen if you commissioned your new $2 million flagship from a naval architect who’d enjoyed an unparalleled career spanning multiple decades designing some of the most memorable cruising and racing yachts ever conceived, such as a long line of iconic Swans? Who was well-known in both Europe and the Americas—you know, Western civilization—as one of the legendary figures in contemporary boat design? A guy like, oh, say, Argentinian Germán Frers. And what if you teamed up Frers with one of, if not the, most well-established boatyards in the Far East, a family-run company that’s been in business for just over four decades, an outfit where the torch has been passed down through the generations, and that’s now run on the sales side by a pair of young siblings who not only wish to make their mark, but who are also obsessed with making the product the best it could be? A firm like, we don’t know, maybe Queen Long Marine in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. What you might get—in fact, what we have gotten from this exact collaboration of Frers, the artist, and Queen Long, the artisans—is the new Hylas 60... ( Cruising World Mag. Dec 8 2020).

Read the full article written by Herb McCormick for Cruising World Magazine.

The cutter-rigged Hylas H60 is easily handled by two sailors. Sail controls are hydraulic and easily operated from either of two helm stations, and the yacht features a self-tacking staysail. The streamlined hull shape boasts an integrated bowsprit for downwind performance.

Like each of its predecessors, the Hylas H60's interior layout is spacious and inviting, making this boat perfect for anyone who enjoys entertaining guests. With an interior designed by HotLab in Milan, the H60 feels particularly luxurious.

Image 1143:

Earlier this year, Cruising World Editor Mark Pillsbury reviewed the Hylas 60  highlighting several features of the unique new design and complimenting the innovative mindsets of brother and sister Andy and Peggy Huang - the dynamic team leading operations both in the United States and at the shipyard in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Hull number one of the H60 is currently available for sale and located in South Florida. H60-01 has a 3-cabin layout, as well as numerous upgrades, and a full set of high-performance sails by North Sails.

Review of Hylas 60

Basic specs..

The Hylas 60 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 2.69 - 2.79 meter (8.83 - 9.13 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Hylas 60 is 1.71, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 9.9 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Hylas 60 is about 588 kg/cm, alternatively 3293 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 588 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 3293 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 18.04

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 100m 2 (1076 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

This section is reserved boat owner's changes, improvements, etc. Here you might find (or contribute with) inspiration for your boat.

Do you have changes/improvements you would like to share? Upload a photo and describe what you have done.

We are always looking for new photos. If you can contribute with photos for Hylas 60 it would be a great help.

As prospective clients tour the yacht and look behind the scenes they will see improvements in every area from freshwater pumps to the use of hydraulics for in-mast furling, backstay control, vang control, and the lowering swim platform that opens up the dinghy garage.

The Hylas yard continues to be very busy as a number of new power and sail designs have proven very popular in the last couple of years. “ As is the case with most of our models we are keeping a “hull in hand” at the yard to ensure we can deliver the next yacht within a 12-month time frame ”, comments  Andy Huang .

Hylas H60: italian style signed Hot Lab

Italian interior design firm Hot Lab has created a bright layout with a selection of fashion-forward wood and fabric finishes.

Hylas h60 interiors

Owners can choose between three- and four-stateroom layouts. The three-stateroom layout places a master suite aft with a large berth on the centerline. A VIP stateroom with a queen berth is forward, with private access to a head that is shared with a portside double with up-and-down berths.

The H60 has a lightweight hull with a closed-cell core and is infused with vinylester resin, laid up with a clear isophthalic gelcoat to monitor the infusion process. A bulbed fin keel reduces side slip and also provides the stiffness to carry a tall rig with a commensurate sail area.

Hylas H60, a new level of interior design

Frers has given the Hylas 60 a very spacious and bright interior with a number of cabin configurations. This space has then been fully utilized by Hot Lab to create a contemporary interior that could be described as a masterpiece of icing on a perfectly baked cake.

Hot Lab embraced the intent of the design and took the interior volume in hand to create a special feel throughout the yacht. The clean lines have been created using the yacht builder’s substantial capabilities for interior joinery, while the accommodations spaces exhibit a stylish and modern sensibility, but with a subtle nod to classic woodwork.

Hylas h60 interior

Of course, the H60 has large hull-side windows, a trunk cabin surrounded by windows, and skylights and overhead hatches that bathe the interior in natural light.

“ We worked in close contact with the yard’s team, and the development of a soft and gauzy mood board has been the result of this relationship, ” says Enrico Lumini , partner and interior chief designer at Hot Lab. “ This is how we ended up with a whitish, oiled wood, warm, polished-nickel elements, and creamy leathers, all materials and details which blend together in an incredibly soft manner, keeping the traditional feeling of a pure sailing yacht interior, yet contemporary and tranquility-inspiring. Small touches of contrast, given by the wenge veneer and minor elements in marble create the final touch, which brings everything to life, like using a perfect filter on an already beautiful picture.”

Take the virtual tour of the Hylas H60

Amidships, a large saloon area with an L-shaped settee with a dining table and stools also has a starboard-side settee. A nav station is to port and galley starboard. The four-stateroom layout places the master in the bow, using the aft sections for a pair of mirrored double staterooms.

For many years teak has been a staple of the yachting interior due to its rare beauty, its rich golden-brown luster, decorative grain, and unique properties of strength, stability, resistance to wear, and humidity.

Hylas h60 room

Having built more than 500 semi-custom yachts Hylas understands that the interior look can be a very personal taste and they encourage clients, that feel so inclined, to really explore different colors, textures, fixtures, fittings, woods and other fabrics.

There are so many other possibilities and the new Hylas 60 demonstrates just a few. For example, the owner can choose polished nickel, cream, and white leather, oiled white oak wood, wenge wood and walnut wood. The inspiration comes from colors and textures of the shoreline with beautiful beaches, exotic shells, surrounding forest, and sun-bleached driftwood.

Hylas will continue to build all of their established models and fully expect to be using plenty of hand-selected and sustainable Burmese teak.

The Hylas H60 hull number 1 is available with a base price of $1.7 million.

Construction

A real modern bluewater.

The Hylas H60 is a yacht for a performance-oriented sailor with an eye for clean design.

Hylas Introduces the H60 Sailing Yacht

  • By Kelley Sanford
  • Updated: July 27, 2018

hylas h60

Taiwan-based Hylas Yachts has introduced its newest build, the H60 sailing yacht. Hylas says this 59-foot-2-inch vessel is designed for comfortable bluewater sailing and can be easily managed by a couple.

Naval architect German Frers, a longtime partner with Hylas, penned a hydrodynamic plumb bow with wide transom hull design for seakeeping capabilities, plus it’s constructed of closed-cell core FRP infused with vinylester resin so that it’s lightweight and strong. Finally, she has a lead, bulbed fin keel for side slip reduction and to steady her so she can handle a tall rig and large sail.

The cockpit’s helm station is aft a social zone where there is room for a settee and a table. And the yacht’s stern area comes with a few bells and whistles as well, including a hydraulic swim platform, an optional automated transom passarelle and a self-deploying anchor. Her tender garage is also here for those jaunts ashore.

As for sailing conveniences, the H60’s winch controls are installed in the coaming near the helm station, Hylas says, and all lines lead to trim stations. She has an in-mast furling system, a standard 105 precent jib and there’s an optional self-tacking staysail. Her mainsail and jib are Doyle SXI sails.

hylas h60

The H60’s one-deck interior is designed by Milan’s Hot Lab Yacht & Design. Amidships is the salon, which has a portside L-shaped settee, a table with removable leaf and two stools, making this a prime spot to dine. Opposite of it is another settee as well. A navigation station is also to port, and opposite of it is the walk-through galley with refrigerator, freezer and 3-burner stove. As for the stern and bow configuration, owners can choose between a 3- or 4-stateroom layout.

hylas h60

With 3 staterooms, her master is aft and full-beam, with a centerline queen berth, an en suite head, his-and-hers hanging lockers and a settee to port and starboard. The forepeak VIP shares a head with the guest stateroom abaft it and to port, which has a double berth with an optional work bench or additional upper bunk. The yacht’s 4-stateroom layout moves the master to the bow and splits the stern space into two twin staterooms that share a head.

Hylas certainly is contributing to the power and sail market, having recently introduced its M44 as well.

The New $1.7 Million Hylas 60 Is a World-Cruising Yacht That Handles Like a Daysailer

Click here to read the full article.

In either configuration, skylights, overhead hatches and windows in the hull sides bring natural light into the interior, designed by Hot Lab in Milan, Italy. The overall sense is tranquility.

Sailboat Review: Italia Yachts 14.98

  • By Herb McCormick
  • May 22, 2024

Woman sailing the Italia Yachts 14.98

In fashion, cuisine, culture, cinema and luxury brands—in other words, in just about every facet of upscale society—the Italians bring an advanced approach to the fine art of living well. La dolce vita , right? Lamborghini, Louis Vuitton, Gucci. Rome, Venice, Milan. Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni, Gina Lollobrigida. When you hear these names, no further explanation is required. They epitomize grace and style.

This is a rather highfalutin way to launch a boat review, but I’m devoid of apology. Because in the nautical world, there’s another brand that deserves high praise.

Drone shot of the Italia Yachts 14.98

I’ve been aware of the Italia line of performance cruisers for several years now, but as a judge in the 2024 Boat of the Year contest in Annapolis, Maryland, as I stepped aboard to inspect the 51-footer, I wasn’t really prepared for the experience. There was but one word to describe the 14.98 model’s attention to detail, long list of options, approach, and execution: magnifico.

There’s a lot to unpack here, and I’ll get to the truly important features: clean aesthetics, robust construction and sparkling sailing characteristics, as well as myriad customization options. But first, allow me to unload a few lines that I jotted down because they really speak to the deep level of detail ingrained in every 14.98:

“Cellphone holder/charger on the steering pod.” “Very sweet, ample life-raft stowage in cockpit.” “Stainless-steel stanchions and pulpits painted black: sexy.” “Really nice adjustable sheet-lead arrangement and excellent belowdecks install keep lines tidy and clean.” “Huge sail locker forward, always a bonus, with room for inflatable dinghy and outboard.” “Drains around hatches a great idea.” “Giant lazarettes with access to steering quadrant, very cool.” “Interior LED lights with floor-level lighting really adds to ambience.” “Engine-room manifold system with everything led to single through-hull is brilliant.” “Love the Oceanaire blinds and screens on all hatches.” “That single rudder will make backing down easier.”

Deck of the Italia Yachts 14.98

Why all the attention to these relatively minor items? Simple: If you sweat the small stuff, it usually means you’re laser-focused on the major matters. Which is certainly the case with this yacht.

The design of the 14.98 is a collaborative effort between naval architect Maurizio Cossutti, who drew the exterior platform, and interior designer Mirko Arbore, who handled the belowdecks layout and furnishings. Cossutti has delivered a stunning hull form—a tapered, curved dish that rises at the bow and descends toward the stern with a subtle sheerline that accentuates the minimalist coachroof and keeps wetted surface to a minimum. There’s a sleek, extended sprit forward—it’s available in two lengths, standard and racing, and sort of serves as an exclamation point for this contemporary structure—and a drop-down swim platform aft, centered by a spacious cockpit for lounging or maneuvers, depending on the task at hand.

Italia Yachts 14.98 twin wheels

Down below, there are three layouts from which to choose. In the United States, the 14.98 is represented by David Walters Yachts, a brokerage house that, having previously repped Hylas Yachts, has deep experience with luxurious brands that cover both bases between a dedicated bluewater cruising boat and an honest racer-cruiser capable of Grand Prix inshore competition and offshore events such as the Newport Bermuda Race. Erik Haaland, sales director for the Italia line, presented the boat to us; when we asked about options, he smiled. “Just ask us,” he said. “We’ll do it.”

David Walters has imported 12 Italias into the States in the past five years, and, as of this past fall, had another quartet on order. We sailed Hull No. 7, whose owners are a couple of former college racing sailors who still wish to compete at a high level. They did last year’s Annapolis to Newport Race with a 10-person crew, notching 17 knots flying down Chesapeake Bay.

They also enjoy using the boat as a weekend condo and taking extended cruises with their family, including a Chesapeake trip this past summer and a season in New England coming up. It’s a true dual-purpose boat. And it’s been fitted out accordingly.

Overhead of the Italia Yachts 14.98 hatch

The nearly beam-width traveler in the cockpit forward of the twin wheels is a clear sign that this is a race boat; the standard setup calls for a single, centrally located mainsheet. All lines are led aft to a suite of clutches. There are several winch packages from which to choose, including the set of electric winches on our craft. The standard draft is 8 feet, 2 inches, though a nearly 10-foot performance keel is an option, as are a pair of L-shaped shoal-draft alternatives. Likewise, the rig on our test boat was carbon fiber, though the standard spar is aluminum. There’s also a choice of mainsails: traditional, square-topped and battened, or furling.

Regarding power and systems, there was no generator on this boat, but rather a Victron lithium-ion battery bank with 800-amp capacity linked to a pair of 250-amp fast-charging alternators that will permit 12 hours of uninterrupted air conditioning without running the engine. (There is space for a generator, but on this boat, it was occupied by the air-conditioning compressor.) This boat was also equipped with a Spectra watermaker. A pair of 200-watt removable solar panels were installed on the dodger for additional juice.

Italia Yachts 14.98 stateroom and saloon

The resin-infused construction is robust but light, utilizing various densities of foam core depending on its placement within the laminate. For example, it’s reinforced in the bow, where slamming can occur, but lowered in less-stressed areas to keep weight at a minimum. Bulkheads are tabbed and glassed into the boat (plywood is standard, but foam-cored bulkheads are available). Carbon-fiber reinforcements are used throughout, including the transverse stringers and a grid system that’s bonded in place and then relaminated to the hull, bulkheads, and stringers. There is no traditional chainplate; instead, the rigging attaches to a stainless-steel padeye that is bolted through the top of the hull toe rail into the carbon-fiber grid system.

“These boats are known as stiff, upwind missiles,” Haaland said. We confirmed it when we had a chance to sail the boat.

And quite the sail it was. In ideal 10 to 14 knots of Chesapeake Bay pressure, the 14.98 tracked like a freight train, easily notching speeds in the mid-7-knot range hard on the breeze, and then topping out at more than 9 knots when cracked off to a reach. At the helm, raised and leveled with a fold-up chock like the round-the-world racers, the deep, single rudder provided plenty of bite. The wheel was light to the touch, and visibility was outstanding. It would be a real treat to get into the open ocean on the 14.98 and let it spread its wings.

Italia Yachts 14.98 navigation station

There has to be a drawback to all this somewhere, correct? Yes. The boat ain’t cheap. In fact, with a million-plus-dollar price tag, give or take, the 14.98 is, for most of us, an aspirational brand, a vessel aimed at sailing’s 1 percent club.

Still. It’s heartening to know that in a world of mass production, with goods and services often aimed at the cheapest common denominator, there are things being made with care and skill that elevates a category or genre. When it comes to production sailboats, such results should be recognized and applauded. We’re looking at you, Italia 14.98. Grazie .

A Satisfied Crew of Italia Owners

You can learn a lot about a brand by looking at actual owners and how they use their boats, and it’s clear from this list of US Italia sailors that they enjoy competing aboard their yachts. Chuck Stormes from Detroit, a past commodore of the Bayview Yacht Club, placed first overall in the 2022 Bayview to Mackinac Race aboard his 9.98, DeTour . New Yorkers Andrew and Linda Weiss have owned several yachts called Christopher Dragon , and on their 11.98 of the same name, they’ve won the Block Island Race, the Northern Ocean Racing Trophy and other prizes. Jeff and Sarah Kennedy sail the 14.98 Artemis , our test boat for this review. Frank and Nancy McGowan, aboard their new 12.98, Querencia , are looking forward to the next Newport Bermuda Race, as well as the ORC World Championship in Rhode Island later this year. Bostonian John Sapirstein, who previously sailed a 12.98 Classic, has moved up to Aquilone , a 16.98. He expects to take delivery in the Adriatic Sea this spring before a summer in the Mediterranean and a trans-Atlantic trip in the ARC rally in 2025.

Black Hawk, missile base, Navy SEAL boat and more. Anduril’s boss has it all

T he founder of defense-tech startup Anduril owns some amazing military-grade vehicles, including a UH-60 Black Hawk chopper, and even maintains an underground missile base.

Palmer Luckey, who is developing advanced autonomous weapons, has the fastest-ever boat developed by the US Navy, six helicopters, and a 1985 ex-Marine Corps Humvee in his top-class military collection.

He bought the Mark V Special Operations Craft from the US Navy. Powered by a little over 5,000 horsepower engine, the boat entered the service with the US Navy SEAL in 1995.

Luckey has US Navy’s Mark V Special Operations Craft

“It was designed specifically for Navy SEAL insertion and extraction missions,” the billionaire told Emily Chang during a recent episode of The Circuit .

“It runs really fast, and it’s a lot of fun. I grew up watching the Marine Corps practice right offshore in their helicopters. Watching Navy ships do exercises gets in your brain, and it doesn’t leave.”

Known for its high speed and stability in rough weather, the boat has an M2 heavy-barreled 50 BMG machine gun mounted on it. Luckey revealed that most of its neighbors like it, and “a handful hate it.”

Anduril developing unmanned fighter jets

Known for founding Oculus and its virtual reality headsets, the billionaire’s Anduril is inching closer in the Department of Defense’s program to develop unmanned fighter jets.

“This is a half-scaled model of Fury, which is an autonomous fighter jet that we are building,” said Luckey.

Leveraging next-gen software, Fury is designed to accelerate the development, testing, and fielding of Mission Autonomy into operational reality for the warfighter, delivering an unfair advantage for unrivaled deterrence.

The company claims that, unlike traditional defense contractors who focus primarily on hardware, Anduril’s core system is Lattice OS, an autonomous sensemaking and command & control platform that serves as the core platform for our suite of capabilities.

“Some of the U.S. technology is very bad and it’s also extremely expensive and not necessarily adapted to the types of conflicts we are going to face in the future. The US has a lot of investment in legacy weapon systems that aren’t necessary,” said Luckey.

He feels that Anduril can take a slice of the Pentagon’s $850 budget and reinvent how they do business from the outside.

Luckey has a missile base

A while ago, he purchased the world’s largest video game collection. He also has missiles and keeps them at his secretive base 200 ft underground. When Chang asked about the location of the base, Luckey said: “I can’t tell you.”

The billionaire grew up in Long Beach, watching a lot of aerospace culture and defense activities. “Southern California unlike, a lot of places, is a place where almost everybody knows someone who has served in the military or has a family member who has served in the military.”

The billionaire has also spent enough time in China for the manufacturing of Oculus VR headsets. He feels that the U.S. has become heavily dependent on Chinese manufacturing, engineering, and supply chain materials.

“It’s really extraordinary how they have pulled themselves up from nothing. We’re the ones that gave him blueprint, we’re the ones that gave him tech,” feels the defense mogul.
