The JP54 Performance Ocean Cruiser

Now that we are discovering fixed wing sails and hydrofoils, the world is starting to accept canting keels as standard equipment. Super accomplished sailor, Jean Pierre Dick’s new yacht building company designs us a blue-water cruiser with an ocean-racer soul. Not only does the JP 54 claim sea worthiness to circumnavigate the globe, but it is also one of the fastest production monohulls on the cruising sailboat market today.

The JP54 Yacht is fast, light and designed for long haul navigation, enabling you to rapidly get to your destination in complete safety as well as discover new ones. As such you will be able to satisfy your desire to get away from it all.

Seriously, it is about time that we make the blue-water cruisers of yesteryear a bit faster; JP-Dick Yachts has done it! I love the transom door to stow the dinghy, no more ‘wonky’ dinghy davits. The anchor chain wash down is also a genius feature. The modern open cockpit is very reminiscent of the Open 60’s or Volvo 70’s; a great space from which to sail the boat. At first I was perplexed by the rotating salon, but it turns out that its function is to help effectively reduce the draft from 3.5m by to 2.5m. It does so by offsetting the ballast to the opposite side of the canting keel, resulting in a flat boat with a shallower draft – pretty neat. The boat is also apparently equipped with a sail inventory that will cover all wind ranges and directions; easily handled by a crew of no more than 2.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dTYQXyE7jM&w=560&h=315]

Having said that, what fail-safes are there for the canting keel/ keel box mechanism (As any good VOR/ Vendee Globe follower should know…..they can have issues)? I would also just like to add, that although there plenty of slick features like the rotating interior and built in boom awning, I have seen no mention of wind generators or solar panels. I am sure that these are features that most distance cruisers would like to see addressed.

JP 54 Interior

None-the-less, this a very cool unique yacht indeed, nice work!

Bill’s Boat Blog: JP54

jp 54 yacht

You could say the rotating interior on the JP 54 is kind of “spacey.”

The JP 54 has an anchor roller, long bowsprit, clean, uncluttered decks, and dual helm stations, but it’s hardly your typical cruising boat. Maybe that’s because it’s the creation of Jean-Pierre Dick, veteran long-distance solo-sailor who wanted to go cruising after hanging up his distance-racing sea boots. When considering the project he says, “I imagined a fast, light yacht” which would still provide the joys of surfing in the Southern Ocean or elsewhere, but be more comfortable than his Vendée Globe yacht was. He wasn’t kidding.

jp 54 yacht

Ivor Wilkins | | The JP54 is right on the cutting edge of what a cruising boat can be. | The JP 54 that’s been launched and is sailing off New Zealand now is capable of ultra-fast passages because it’s not only ultra-light, it has a canting keel, and get this-a 360- degree rotating salon. No that’s not a typo. The galley, nav station, and settee (along with the boat’s batteries and hydraulics) are mounted

on rotating “carousel” that allows the weight of these systems to be effortlessly moved to windward. More weight on the rail translates into more stability and less heeling while also providing for more power and speed. As you see on the interior plan, the orange circle in the middle of the boat outlines the area where the rotating interior, rotates.

This boat may not for everyone, but it’s sure worth a look. And the days when more mainstream cruising boats are equipped with canting keels and interiors that shift more weight to windward with a push of a button may not be that far off.

jp 54 yacht

** | | The orange area in the middle of the boat rotates to move weight to windward. Also notice the interior plan’s four private cabins and integrated dinghy “garage.”**|

"I imagined the cruising yacht of my dreams during my last two Vendée Globe races," says Jean-Pierre. "I wanted to sail offshore and at the same time enjoy stopovers. I therefore conceived the JP54, a uniquely designed light and fast yacht, to retain the pleasure of surfing at 20 knots more comfortably than on my racing yacht. With the JP54, you can share the sensations and the pleasures of sailing with your family and friends."

jp 54 yacht

Guillaume Verdier, who also designed Jean-Pierre's next Vendée yacht, Virbac-Paprec 3, worked with Jean-Pierre to transform the JP54 from an idea to reality. "Jean Pierre was full of ideas linked to his mixed experience of 60’s and cruising" says Verdier. "Notably, the idea of creating a simple to manoeuvre cruising yacht which is still a pleasure to sail. This boat will reach very high speeds for a cruising boat, but, for all that, this does not make it a Vendée Globe boat. We used 'single-handed' techniques for the deck plan, since we can say that the skipper of a cruising yacht is often manoeuvring 'solo'. It is therefore simple. We reduced the number of complicated systems, which end up lacking in reliability, and require a great deal of maintenance." A example of their concessions to cruising over pure racing, hydraulics have been added to the Harken Racing winches to haul in or hoist the sails.

jp 54 yacht

Below decks, the minimalistic approach is immediately apparent. The design aesthetic is spacious, comfortable, and above all else, lightweight and functional. Centrally located, a literal revolution. The chart table/nav station/galley (shown here to port) can be rotated 180º, always keeping the most weight windward while the guests can enjoy seating to leeward.. An innovation that originated on Jean-Pierre's Paprec-Virbac 2, the rotating carousel eliminates the need for a complicated ballast transfer system. All the batteries, hydraulics, and storage - a total weight of approximately 600kg - can be rotated from one side of the yacht to the other in mere seconds with just the press of a button.

jp 54 yacht

Forward of the carousel, two small berths - suitably kid-sized- and a single head, complete with a canting toilet. Having just one head requires less piping, therefore reducing weight and keeping the plumbing simple. On the opposite side of the chart table, a simple galley, equally capable in port or offshore.

jp 54 yacht

Looking aft of the carousel (shown here rotated to starboard), two private cabins with larger beds to port and starboard with a storage space between them large enough to accommodate a RIB that can be accessed from the stern.

jp 54 yacht

In the words of Jean-Pierre Dick: "I imagined a fast, light yacht which would still keep the joys of surfing in the Great South or elsewhere, and more comfortable than my Vendée yacht. You need to take all the know-how from our powerful monohulls and remove the professional elements (centreboards, physical trimming) just to keep the sensations and pleasures of sailing. During my second Vendée Globe, I thought of stopping on the Auckland Islands south of New Zealand, however, this is not easy to do in an Open 60. I said to myself that the JP 54 would have to be able to anchor in a bay or set off again in less than 10 minutes. The pleasure of sailing comes with the ease with which you can discover a place." From the square topped mainsail to the 3 tonne canting keel, in the JP54 it would seem the Absolute Dreamers team has succeeded.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

jp 54 yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

jp 54 yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

jp 54 yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

jp 54 yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

jp 54 yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

jp 54 yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

jp 54 yacht

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

More deaths in the English Channel underscore risks for migrants despite UK efforts to stem the tide

LONDON (AP) — Five more people died in the English Channel on Tuesday, underscoring the risks of crossing one of the world’s busiest sea lanes in overloaded inflatable boats just hours after British lawmakers approved a controversial migrant bill to stop the traffic.

The migrants, including a 7-year-old girl, died when their boat got stuck on a sandbank off the coast of Pas-de-Calais in northern France. The French navy rescued 49 people, but 58 others refused to disembark and continued on toward Britain, local authorities said in a statement.

The vessel was just one of several small boats packed with people that took off from the French coast early Tuesday, as calm weather enticed them to attempt the crossing. The overcrowded boats are being monitored by drones, French maritime authorities said.

Just a few hours earlier, the U.K. Parliament approved legislation allowing the government to deport to Rwanda those who enter the country illegally. While Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says the plan will deter people from risking their lives on the channel, human rights groups have criticized it as illegal and inhumane.

“If you look at what’s happening, criminal gangs are exploiting vulnerable people; they are packing more and more people into these unseaworthy dinghies,” Sunak told reporters on a trip to Poland. “That’s why, for matters of compassion more than anything else, we must actually break this business model and end the unfairness of people coming to our country illegally.”

Rwanda government's deputy spokesperson Alain Mukuralinda said Tuesday, April 23, 2024, it's ready to receive migrants from the United Kingdom after British Parliament this week approved a long-stalled bill seeking to stem the tide of people crossing the English Channel in small boats by deporting some to the East African country. (AP Photo, File)

The number of migrants crossing the channel in small boats has soared in recent years as people fleeing war, the effects of climate change and economic uncertainty seek a better life in Britain. They pay smugglers thousands of dollars for the crossing, hoping to reunite with family members or find work in a country where immigration enforcement is seen as weak and where migrant groups from all over the world can easily melt into society.

Human rights organizations say the way to stop the trafficking is for countries to work together to provide safe and legal routes for migrants, not for countries like Britain to put up barriers and outsource their problem to others.

But even allies Britain and France have struggled to sufficiently coordinate efforts to reduce the number of those crossing the English Channel in small boats. The U.K. has struck a series of deals with France to increase patrols of beaches and share intelligence to disrupt smugglers — all of which have had only a limited impact.

Britain’s effort to send some asylum-seekers to Rwanda was swiftly condemned by both the United Nations’ refugee agency and the Council of Europe, which called on the U.K. to rethink its plans.

“The new legislation marks a further step away from the U.K.’s long tradition of providing refuge to those in need, in breach of the Refugee Convention,” U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said in a statement. “Protecting refugees requires all countries – not just those neighboring crisis zones – to uphold their obligations.”

Small boat crossings are a potent political issue in Britain, where they are seen as evidence of the government’s failure to control immigration.

Sunak has made his plan to “stop the boats” a key campaign promise with his Conservative Party trailing badly in opinion polls ahead of a general election later this year.

The number of migrants arriving in Britain on small boats soared to 45,774 in 2022 from just 299 four years. The figure dropped to 29,437 last year as the government cracked down on people smugglers and reached an agreement to return Albanians to their home country.

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson first proposed the Rwanda plan more than two years ago, when he reached an agreement with the East African nation to accept some asylum-seekers in return for millions of pounds (dollars) in aid. Implementation has been held up by a series of court challenges and opposition from migrant advocates who say it violates international law.

The deportees will be eligible to apply for asylum in Rwanda but they won’t be allowed to return to Britain.

The legislation approved early Tuesday, known as the Safety of Rwanda Bill, is a response to a U.K. Supreme Court decision that blocked deportation flights because the government couldn’t guarantee the safety of migrants sent to Rwanda. After signing a new treaty with Rwanda to beef up protections for migrants, the government proposed the new legislation declaring Rwanda to be a safe country.

The Rwandan government welcomed approval of the bill, saying it underscores the work it has done to make Rwanda “safe and secure” since the genocide that ravaged the country 30 years ago.

“We are committed to the migration and economic development partnership with the U.K. and look forward to welcoming those relocated to Rwanda,” government spokesperson Yolande Makolo said.

JPMorgan warns of need for ‘reality check’ on phasing out fossil fuels

Malcolm Moore in London

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

The world needs a “reality check” on its move from fossil fuels to renewable energy, JPMorgan has warned, saying it may take “generations” to hit net-zero targets.

In a global energy strategy report sent to clients this week, the US investment bank said efforts to reduce the use of coal, oil and gas had been set back by higher interest rates, inflation and wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

“While the target to net zero is still some time away, we have to face up to the reality that the variables have changed,” Christyan Malek, JPMorgan’s head of global energy strategy and lead author of the report, told the Financial Times. “Interest rates are much higher. Government debt is significantly greater and the geopolitical landscape is structurally different. The $3tn to $4tn it will cost each year come in a different macro environment.”

Column chart of Global clean energy capital expenditure ($bn) showing Clean energy spending has tripled since 2019

Malek predicted that the levels of investment required would put pressure on governments to step back from more aggressive energy policies. The Scottish government on Thursday scrapped its ambitious plan to cut carbon emissions by 75 per cent by 2030, conceding that the target was unachievable.

In its report, JPMorgan said changing the world’s energy system “is a process that should be measured in decades, or generations, not years”.

It added that investment in renewable energy “currently offers subpar returns” and that if energy prices rose strongly, there was even a risk of social unrest.

Line chart of Equity indices rebased (composites of US & European) showing Clean energy stocks have stalled

The report came after oil companies including Shell and BP trimmed back their climate targets this year and hundreds of other companies, including Microsoft, Unilever and JBS, failed to set goals that were ambitious enough to be approved by the Science Based Targets initiative, a validation body set up after the UN COP26 climate summit in Glasgow.

Malek noted that it was not guaranteed that demand for oil and gas would peak in 2030, as predicted by the International Energy Agency, as the populations of developing countries begin to buy more cars and take more flights.

JPMorgan forecasts that the world will need 108mn barrels of oil a day in 2030, and that building more wind, solar and electric vehicle capacity could add a further 2mn daily barrels to this total.

“We are at a tipping point in terms of demand,” Malek said. “More and more of the world is getting access to energy and a greater proportion want to use that energy to upgrade their living standards. If that growth continues it puts huge pressure on energy systems and on governments.”

JPMorgan is a leading financier of fossil fuel projects and low-carbon energy projects. The bank underwrote $101bn of fossil fuel deals in 2021 and 2022, and $71bn of low-carbon deals, according to data from BloombergNEF.

Chief executive Jamie Dimon told a congressional hearing In 2022 that the bank would continue to invest in big oil and gas projects, saying that pulling out of such deals “would be the road to hell for America”, and that the world was not getting the energy transition right.

Kingsmill Bond, an energy strategist at the Rocky Mountain Institute, disputed JPMorgan’s assertion that the cost of building renewables capacity was becoming unaffordable, saying the annual growth of energy infrastructure spending will only be 2 per cent, as money is increasingly diverted from oil and gas projects into renewables.

“Renewable energy is much cheaper and more efficient than fossil fuel energy, which is why almost all electricity generation capacity now being built is solar or wind,” he said.

Separately, energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie said on Thursday that higher interest rates would make the transition to a net zero global economy “even harder and more costly”.

Peter Martin, Wood Mackenzie’s chief economist, said “the increased cost of capital has profound implications for the energy and natural resource industries”, and that higher rates disproportionately affect renewables and nuclear power because of their high capital intensity and low returns.

Wood Mackenzie added that many companies in the oil and gas industry had low levels of borrowing and would be relatively unaffected by higher rates.
