Olympic Yacht Show to open in Greece this week

The second edition of the Olympic Yacht Show is to be held 7-10 October 2022 at the renovated facilities of Olympic Marine in Lavrio.

Like last year, the Olympic Yacht show will be held across the floating pontoons and on land, but organisers, Ondeck Events , say it will be bigger and even more diverse.

It’s reported that the show has already attracted the attention of some of the largest yachting companies in Greece, while other international companies and shipyards have confirmed their participation as guests.

Some of the Greek shipyards present at this year’s Olympic Yacht Show 2022 will include Olympic YachΙS, Skipper-BSK, Technohull, Rafnar Hellas, Rock Marine, Seafighter, Olympic Ribs, and Onda Tenders.

Over 100 boats and yachts are estimated to be on display, with premiers including Swan Shadow, Olympic 45 SRC, Ribco 100 G2 X, and Rafnar 1200 Cross Cabin.

“The Olympic Yacht Show aims to become a significant communication platform for the Greek shipbuilding industry,” says Gerasimos Gerolimatos, head of the Olympic Yacht Show Organising Committee. “Greek yachts must have their own local show at home in order to attract foreign buyers; this is one of the main reasons for visiting the show.”

Olympic Yacht Show 2023: the event returns to Olympic Marine

ONDECK Events is pleased to announce the organisation of the 3rd OLYMPIC YACHT SHOW, an event dedicated to the premium yacht category. Building upon the success of last year’s event, the yachting business scene in Greece is set to reconvene for an even grander and more affluent gathering.

The event will take place between 19th and 22nd October 2023 at the modern and renovated facilities of Olympic Marine in Lavrio. The main goal of the show is to establish itself as a productive communication platform for the medium and large yacht categories.

More specifically, the OLYMPIC YACHT SHOW highlights new yachts for sale belonging to the premium yacht category. It stands as the sole yachting event in Greece with a distinct focus on medium and mega yachts, as well as the thriving industry that revolves around them.

The foremost companies in the industry will have a robust presence in both the onshore and floating areas, set within a well-organised and elegantly designed environment. Within this context, special arrangements have been made to accommodate large category yachts, including luxury ribs and luxury day cruisers.

The premium in-water show, which took place for the first time last October at Olympic Marine in Lavrio, positioned Greece at the epicentre of international interest, drawing over 15,000 visitors from Greece and around the globe. The third Olympic Yacht Show, set to take place from 19 to 22 October, positions Greece as a compelling yacht show destination.

Time is running out for the start of the Olympic Yacht Show, which will take place from the 1st to 5th  October 2021, at the premises of the impressive Olympic Marine, in Sounio, Attica. Under the ancient temple of Poseidon, the entire yacht market and maritime tourism will attend a premium event that will serve as a pillar for the development of quality tourism in the country, while strengthening the local economy of the wider region.

The municipal authority of Lavrio has been an invaluable ally in this long-awaited event offering their full support to the Olympic Yacht Show.  From ancient times, the land of Lavreotiki has linked its history with the sea as, after the Battle of Marathon (490 BC), the mines of the area financed the construction of ships that fought in the Battle of Salamis. Thousands of years later, the marina at Sounio, the Olympic Marine, will host the greatest event that has ever taken place in the field of yachting in Greece. With the Olympic Yacht Show, the wider area of Lavreotiki will be seen under a new perspective as its natural beauty, gastronomy and hospitality will be advertised abroad. “Our city, Lavrio, will host the 1st Olympic Yacht Show, which aspires to become an important restart platform for the Yacht and Maritime Tourism market in Greece.

The event, which will take place at the Olympic Marine, one of the best organized and important marinas in Attica, will highlight the quality elements of Lavreotiki area. For us, the citizens of Lavrio, the marina features a comparative advantage that should be promoted for the growth t of maritime tourism and be displayed as an asset of life, progress and local development. The fact that this event will host the most renowned companies in the yacht industry and also attract international interest, ranks our Municipality high on the list of the European Municipalities that offer ideal conditions, geomorphology and infrastructure for the development of all forms of maritime tourism. During the Olympic Yacht Show, the area will host hundreds of visitors both from Greece and abroad boosting, thus, local businesses. From the first moment, the municipal authority of the area “embraced” this premium event. The Hellenic departments of traffic control and firefighting will be monitoring the event ensuring a smooth conduct, as traffic is expected to be high. It will be the first time that our guests will have the opportunity to admire the new models of premium category boats in a sea environment and also enjoy the best that the Greek market has to show.

Today there are 22 marinas and more than 3,600 berths for boats, including many for superyachts, megayachts, and gigayachts. To accommodate these vessels an array of modern maintenance and repair facilities has opened, along with technical support, specialty marine stores, and, notably, marina-based health and wellness centers that cater to yacht guests and crews.  

The warm weather and safe, tranquil seas here, especially from October to April, provide extraordinarily pleasurable cruising conditions, all complemented by Dubai’s land-based attractions. The city is known for its scenic coastline, luxe hotels, cultural fare, and award-winning restaurants. Cruise-in, dock-and-dine opportunities are a new trend, offering the possibility to moor for a few hours while enjoying fine dining at a resort or hotel, a spa treatment, or the amenities of a beach club. 

Luxe and well-equipped marinas abound. Among the newest and most popular are the following:  

Dubai Harbour, which opened in 2020 with space for 700 vessels, is in the heart of Dubai, with easy access to tourist attractions and encompassing cafes, shops, VIP lounges, and the Dubai Harbour Yacht Club.  

Nakheel Marinas Dubai Islands was launched in 2023 along the city’s north coast, offering easy cruising to the open sea; it can accommodate 13 superyachts at a time. 

Luxurious and picturesque P & O Marinas has a total of 1,200 wet berths and 600 dry berths and includes well-known Mina Rashid, which can host a range of pleasure craft, plus superyachts between 25 and 160 meters. 

Located on the prestigious Jumeirah Bay Island, along a promenade that resembles a Mediterranean village, Bulgari Marina & Yacht Club is a superyacht anchorage that includes berths for vessels from 10 to 40 meters as well as dock-and-dine services.

Also noteworthy are Bay Marina, Dubai’s first dedicated superyacht marina, with berths for vessels up to 160 meters; Palm View Marina, located on the Dubai Harbour seafront, which boasts a lively shoreside walkway; and Nakheel Marinas on Palm Jumeirah, which welcomes a range of sailing vessels with 261 berths in two marinas plus luxury yacht services. 

Dubai’s busy winter-season calendar is filled with international events that appeal to yacht owners and other high-end travelers. The Dubai Desert Classic, Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships, Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix, Emirates Dubai 7s rugby, and Dubai World Cup horse racing are just a few of the must-see tournaments for sports aficionados. On the cultural scene, there are Art Dubai, Dubai Watch Week, DIFC Art Nights, and World Art Dubai. High-profile maritime expositions that showcase the latest in yacht design, technology, and luxury include the Dubai International Boat Show, which celebrated its 30th anniversary earlier this year, and the three-day Gulf Superyacht Summit 2024, coming in November. 

As Dubai has grown as a world-class yachting destination, the city has also focused on sustainability of its rich marine environment through collaborations and green marina initiatives with the aim of promoting responsible yachting and protecting the ocean’s biodiversity. KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Singapore authorities said Monday a dredger boat reported a sudden loss in engine and steering control that led it to hit a stationary cargo tanker, causing an oil spill that has blackened part of the city-island’s southern shores.

The Netherlands-flagged dredger Vox Maxima struck the Singaporean fuel supply ship Marine Honor on Friday. It ruptured one of the cargo tanks on the Marine Honor, which leaked low-sulfur oil into the sea. Although the leak has been contained, tides washed the spilled oil that had been treated with dispersants further along the shoreline, including to the popular resort island of Sentosa.

Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority, in a joint statement with the National Environment Agency, the National Parks Board and Sentosa Development Corp., said the master and crew members of Vox Maxima are assisting in the ongoing investigations.

Part of the beachfront at a public park, beaches at three southern islands and a nature reserve have been closed to facilitate cleanup efforts. Sentosa beaches remain open to the public but sea activities and swimming are prohibited.

Oil Spill Response Limited, an industry-funded cooperative that responds to spills, will deploy floating containment and recovery devices to corral the oil on the water surface, where two skimmer craft will then lift the oil into storage tanks, the statement said.

Over 250 workers are involved in the cleanup. Close to 1.5 kilometers (.9 miles) of containment booms have been set up to trap the oil and another 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) of the temporary barriers will be laid over the next few days to prevent further spread of oil onto the shore, the statement said.

The National Parks Board also deployed oil-absorbing booms to protect mangroves at another park that hasn’t been affected so far. Members of the public who volunteered to help have been assigned to patrol the park for early signs of oil slicks.

Conservationists and biologists are monitoring the full extent of the damage on marine and wildlife. Photos in Singapore newspapers and on Facebook showed one small dead fish and a kingfisher covered in oil.
