Own the adventure, invest in a bareboat

Boat owners can have the best of both worlds; An income, plus private access to a professionally maintained boat in a world-class sailing destination.

How a Whitsundays bareboat charter works

A bareboating charter in the Whitsundays does not include a professional crew. You and your family or friends hire a fully equipped yacht or catamaran and operate the vessels yourselves. While on a bareboat charter, you decide your itinerary and the pace of your holiday – where you anchor each night and what activities you do around the Islands.

Some people have incredibly adventurous bareboat charters focused on sailing, resort hopping, hiking and snorkelling. Others prefer to make their Whitsundays sailing holiday a relaxing escape, enjoying lazing on pristine beaches, curling up with a book, unplugging and living onboard at a slower pace.

No qualifications are required to hire a bareboat in Queensland. Everyone receives a comprehensive briefing on how to operate their vessel safely and if needed, help is never far away. Our team are there to support all of our guests on their Whitsundays sailing adventure.  If you’re feeling unsure about your ability to handle a boat, you can hire a sail guide for an hourly or daily rate to make sure you’re confident with skippering the boat yourself.

What does it cost to hire a yacht in the Whitsundays?

The cost of hiring a yacht and sailing the Whitsundays depends on the time of year, the type of boat and the number of people you want to sail with. We’ve made it simple to get a quick quote; Put the dates you want to charter a yacht into our simple online booking system.

Bareaboat Yacht Hire in the Whitsundays is a Certified Ecotourism Holiday

Whitsunday Rent A Yacht is recognised as a Green Travel Leader by Ecotourism Australia, having held ECO Certification for over 10 years. When you embark on a bareboat charter with us through the Whitsundays, you can rest assured that your holiday is not having a negative impact on the incredible location you’re in.

You can find yachts available to rent in Australia and in a multitude dream destinations around the world on the Nautal website. Flexible cancellation or changes up to 15 days before check-in is permitted on selected boats . Before making your booking, you can check the rental conditions of specific boats with their owners. To rent a yacht in Australia promises a luxurious ocean adventure, during which you can sail along numerous beaches and destinations of this country.

What is the price of a charter yacht in Australia?

Renting a yacht in Australia costs from $7080 per day in low season , while in high season it costs from $10,620 per day . Yachts are generally rented with a captain and the most luxurious vessels even come with a crew. It is important that you check the mandatory and included extras with the owner.

Is yacht rental possible in Australia with or without a skipper?

It is possible to rent a yacht in Australia both with and without a skipper but you should check out the laws regarding whether or not you need a boat license .  In all Australian states except for the Northern Territory there are strict laws governing whether or not you need a license, depending mostly on the maximum speed of the boat.  If you have a license though, you should be able to find a bareboat yacht charter in Australia without trouble and this will allow you almost complete freedom to cruise the Australian shores and waterways as you please.  If you don’t have a license, it would probably be safer and easier to rent the boat with a skipper, allowing for a relaxing holiday where you don’t have to worry about sailing the boat.

Which are the most popular ports in Australia?

This could actually prove to be a difficult decision as we offer yacht rentals almost anywhere ! If you’re desperate to visit Sydney , you can either rent directly from there or choose from a few different nearby locations such as Cronulla . There are also plenty more yachts available to rent in New South Wales .

For those who wish to view the Great Barrier Reef up close on their own private yacht rental, there are a number of luxurious yacht rentals up for grabs in Queensland .  The Great Barrier reef is the perfect location for divers as it is home to a whole host of marine life including many species of sea snakes, sharks, whales and marine turtles, among others. Other popular boat yacht rental locations in this area include Abell Point Marina, Airlie Beach , Shute Harbour, and Long Island .

For those wishing to cruise the Southern seas and maybe even visit Tasmania , an island state of Australia located about 240 km (150 miles) to the south of the mainland, Victoria is a good option. You can also rent from Loch Sport .

If you want to explore the Indian Ocean and the West Coast , maybe yacht hire in Perth is the right option for you.

Other Sailing Areas in Australia

Australia’s shimmering coastline is packed full of wonderful areas for sailing or mooring and exploring the mainland. Below is some information to help you pick the perfect place for your australian yacht charter.

The Whitsundays

The Whitsundays is a classic holiday destination, popular with Australians and foreigners alike for many reasons, but one in particular. These islands are the perfect place to rent a yacht in Australia if you want to sail out to the Great Barrier Reef , a trip which takes between 70 and 90 minutes one way .  Whether you want a charter for just a couple of days or even an afternoon, this is the ultimate yacht rental location as booking times and dates are very flexible in this location.

Moreton Bay

This beautiful bay is situated in Queensland , falling on the coast between Stradbroke Island, Moreton and mainland Australia . Being located near Brisbane , you have the option of flying to Brisbane and renting directly from there, or finding something a little closer if you prefer. This area is the ideal destination for both couples looking to get away and cruise the islands or for big families who want an action packed holiday, full of exciting and unique activities. The area is a fantastic place for divers, avid swimmers and sailors alike.

Great Sandy Strait

Yet another option which is perfect for sailors looking to explore Australia’s waters is the Great Sandy Strait, found between Bundaberg and the Sunshine Coast . The transparent water is spectacular for a quick swim and the perfect place to rent a yacht in Australia. The rich variety of marine life here also adds to the once in a lifetime experience.  If you’re lucky, you can see dolphins, turtles, whales and dugongs!

Port Jackson, Sydney

Keep it classic and combine your sailing holiday with a trip to the Opera House and many other top sights in Sydney . Port Jackson is lined by Sydney Harbour National Park but it is also within reach of other must-visit areas such as Bondi Beach . The stellar combo of wonderful weather and stunning scenery make for a fantastic stay on a yacht in Sydney.

What are the weather and sailing conditions like in Australia?

Australia has rather varied weather conditions depending on which part of the country you want to visit. From October to April , you can generally expect average temperatures of around 33°C/91°F . During the winter months (June-August) the weather is typically mild, with average daily July temperatures around 27°C/81°F (although they have been known to drop to 32°F/0°C in certain areas.. The average annual rainfall is 532 mm but sometimes no rain falls for months.  You should also beware of the cyclone season , which runs from November until April in Australia, even though cyclones rarely occur and never usually below 30°S.

When is the best time for yacht holidays in Australia?

This depends on what sort of holiday you want.  The high season for sailing in Australia runs from late November until March , even though this also overlaps with the Australian cyclone season , which runs from November until April .  Even though very few cyclones have actually occurred, you also have to remember that the Australian summer holidays occur during these months, leading to crowded beaches.  The crowds who flock to the seas to cool off can make sailing in the sea more tricky as although most beaches have designated areas for swimming and surfing, people have been known to ignore these guidelines.

If you want to avoid the crowds , maybe it would be a better idea to go during the Australian winter as even though the weather can be a little erratic, the temperatures are rarely extreme. During the winter months, you also have a better chance of finding good deals on boats.

How to get to Australia?

You can fly every day to the east-coast cities from Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia .  It is even possible these days to get a direct flight from the UK , something which has only been made a possibility recently. Fares can vary greatly depending on the season, but the highest prices are usually the two weeks either side of Christmas. Fares are usually lower during the “shoulder” seasons, which run from late February to May and mid-August to November, and the best prices can be found during low season , June to mid-August . Due to the distance from the most popular departure points, flying on weekends does not tend to make a difference to the price. Of course, if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, you can take a ship trip from Asia , which may also give you a little time to explore another country on your way!

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Adelaide

Embarking on a sailing adventure in Adelaide, South Australia with Yachting.Rent gives you the power to choose between the exhilarating speed of a sailing boat or the luxurious comfort of a catamaran. Both options offer unique advantages, making your journey on the waters of the Gulf St. Vincent an unforgettable experience.

Sailing boats are the traditional choice for those seeking to experience the thrill of harnessing the wind. Agile and responsive, sailing boats offer a hands-on experience and the opportunity to learn the craft of sailing. With a lean hull, they are built for speed, slicing through the waves, and can take you to your destination quickly. They are perfect for day trips, weekend getaways, or challenging sailing adventures across longer distances.

On the other hand, catamarans provide an entirely different sailing experience. With their two hulls, catamarans offer greater stability, making them an ideal choice for those seeking a relaxed and comfortable voyage. They are excellent for families or groups as they provide more space and comfort, with expansive decks and cabins for everyone to stretch out and relax. Their shallow draft also allows you to anchor closer to the shore, perfect for exploring Adelaide’s coastline and secluded coves.

Adelaide’s consistent winds and calm waters make it an excellent destination for both types of vessels. The sailing boat can take advantage of the steady breezes for a swift and exciting sail, while the catamaran can offer a stable and comfortable cruise to enjoy the picturesque coastline.

Whether you’re a seasoned sailor eager to feel the wind in your sails, or a relaxed cruiser looking to soak up the sun on a spacious deck, Yachting.Rent can provide the perfect vessel for your adventure. So, sailboat or catamaran? The choice is yours. Set sail in Adelaide, South Australia, and make lasting memories on the azure waters.

Private Yacht To Nusa Penida and Lembongan

We had a fabulous day on the water. The crew was fantastic and very accommodating. Queen responded quickly to my inquiry for booking and was helpful in building itinerary out to Penida Island, Lembongan and surrounding bays. Highly recommend. I am experienced cruising in blue ocean water, so if it’s your first time out, I’d recommend taking something since you may experience heavy chop (not a problem for me). Highly recommend

April, 2024

Our experience renting the self-drive 12-person boat for my birthday was nothing short of fantastic! The boat was spacious, comfortable, and easy to navigate. We had a blast exploring the waterways, soaking up the sun, and celebrating onboard. The self-drive feature gave us the freedom to chart our own course and create unforgettable memories. Highly recommended for group outings or special occasions!

November, 2023

Very good experience ! Our guide Komang, took very good care of us all day long. We spent the morning fishing and snorkeling, it was incredible and then we chilled and had lunch on the beach. The afternoon, Komang took us to some places to visit the countryside of Bali, we met very nice people and discovered the Balinese culture. It was a perfect day !

January, 2023

Great skipper, with a fab boat. Mark made our day extra special, showing us around the harbour sharing and his knowledge. We got some great photos thanks to him choosing the best spots! We felt like the boat was ours, would definitely recommend Mark, great day!

November, 2022

Mark was absolutely magnificent and helped a really special evening run perfectly. His boat was immaculate. The day wouldn’t have been as memorable without him. His communication before and during the boat trip was brilliant too, alongside his advice. Thanks for everything, Mark!

January, 2019

Perfect way to combine a 21st celebration, seeing Sydney’s waterside highlights and having a bit of fun. Mark was charming, knowledgable and flexible, the boat classically handsome, comfortable and with a good turn of speed, and the whole package great value.

Putin Came to Asia to Disrupt, and He Succeeded

His embrace of North Korea and deal making with Vietnam injected more potential threats into a region already strained by Taiwan tensions and South China Sea clashes.

Vladimir Putin walks past a line of flags.

By Damien Cave

Reporting from Sydney, Australia

Four days in Asia. That’s all President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia needed to anger Washington, undermine Beijing and rattle a collection of Indo-Pacific nations already scrambling to cope with a jumbled world order.

After stops in Pyongyang and Hanoi this week that were draped in Communist red, Mr. Putin left behind a redrawn map of risk in Asia. North Korea sat at the center: a rogue nuclear state that regularly threatens its neighbors, suddenly empowered by Russian promises of sophisticated military aid and a mutual defense pact.

Mr. Putin also signed at least a dozen deals with Vietnam — a country of growing importance for both China and the United States as they vie for influence — where he insisted that “reliable security architecture” could not be built with “closed military-political blocs.”

The trip was both defiant and disruptive. It showed that the jockeying for power sometimes framed as a new Cold War between the United States and China is less binary than it might seem, and many countries in the region seemed to emerge from the week with a deeper sense of unease.

Mr. Putin’s presence and his threats, bold one minute, vague the next, have added even more complexity to their already difficult calculations around security and Great Power competition.

Over the past few years, the Indo-Pacific has been knocked around by a geopolitical shoving match between the United States and China, primarily over China’s claims on Taiwan, and increasingly over heightened Chinese militarization in the South China Sea.

In May, China launched two days of intense navy and air force drills around Taiwan in what it called a form of “strong punishment.” The exercises came after Taiwan’s new president pledged to defend the sovereignty of the self-governing island that Beijing sees as lost territory.

Just this week, another flashpoint — the South China Sea — edged closer to conflict. After months of bitter standoffs in the middle of a turquoise choke point for global trade, a Philippine Navy sailor was injured Monday after ships from China and the Philippines collided near a disputed archipelago. Widening the potential ramifications, the Philippines is an ally the United States is treaty-bound to help in case of war.

Many countries in the region were already beefing up their militaries to deal with China’s pressure and the uncertainty over how far the rivalry between the United States and China might go.

Add to those concerns a wave of jitters in the region over the U.S. presidential election, not to mention a new report this month showing that China is in the midst of a “significant” expansion of its nuclear capabilities, and headaches have become common in the region’s foreign policy circles.

Now Mr. Putin has induced a few more. With his embrace of North Korea, including his open threat to better arm Kim Jong-un’s military, he has effectively added another potential crisis to Asia’s list of concerns, reigniting old hostilities on the Korean Peninsula.

Officials in South Korea and Japan — North Korea’s avowed enemies — were especially alarmed. Both countries had already been talking about toughening their defenses and growing closer to the United States and each other, particularly since Mr. Kim’s rhetoric has become markedly more hostile toward them in recent months.

Rahm Emanuel, the U.S. ambassador to Japan, described Mr. Putin’s burst of activity in Asia as “your worst fears come true.”

“What Russia just did is they told us they are going to be the principal organizers of rogue states that develop nuclear weapons, violate nonproliferation treaties, and allow countries under U.N. sanctions to get outside those sanctions,” he said.

Peter Tesch, Australia’s ambassador in Moscow from 2016 to 2019, stressed that Mr. Putin favors keeping the world chaotic because he believes Russia benefits from keeping other countries off-kilter. Disinformation and partnerships with other provocateurs have become Putin doctrine.

“He’s quite happy for Russia to be the smelliest, farting uncle at the barbecue,” Mr. Tesch said. “The signal is, ‘Yes I am a disrupter. I can act in ways that increase the complexity of what you’re trying to manage.’”

China, North Korea’s largest trading partner and arguably its biggest influence, must also contend with the fallout. That could include pressure to clarify what its “no limits” friendship with Russia means for China’s stated goal of stability on the Korean Peninsula.

Some analysts suggest Mr. Putin had all of this in mind. He may have tightened the bond with Mr. Kim, who greeted him with hugs at the airport, to both scare the United States and signal frustration to China’s leader, Xi Jinping, for not doing more to help Russia win in Ukraine.

“If Putin cannot get everything he wants from Beijing, he will look to get it elsewhere, and there aren’t a lot of supermarkets that cover his wish list — arms, labor and a willingness to pick a fight with Washington,” said Samuel Greene, a professor of Russian politics at King’s College London. “Iran is one. North Korea is another.”

“The point is that, while Putin recognizes his dependency on China, he can’t afford to let Beijing dictate the course of the war effort — because as goes the war, so goes Putin.”

To some degree, Mr. Putin’s trip to Asia was also a potent reminder of Russia’s historic military ties: North Korea, India, and Vietnam are just a few of the countries that have been heavily dependent on Russian hardware for decades, creating links in training and maintenance that keep Moscow deeply embedded in the region.

But even before Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, those ties were fraying: Russia’s arms sales to Southeast Asia dropped to $89 million in 2021, down from $1.2 billion in 2014, according to independent studies . A clean break or even significant diversification is what Mr. Putin has sought to delay.

And if Mr. Putin’s gestures toward North Korea do end up fueling an arms race in Asia, Moscow also stands to gain: Weapons from Russia do not just intensify the risk of chaos when shared with a country like North Korea. They also bring in revenue, much needed for a Russian economy that has been squeezed by sanctions, war, inflation and 16 percent interest rates.

Mr. Putin’s visit to Hanoi focused on deals. The full scope of what was agreed is not clear, but analysts predicted that some would probably emerge later as defense-related, with financing devised to skirt international sanctions — possibly with payment in the form of oil and gas rights in the South China Sea.

“Vietnam hasn’t made a major upgrade to its land forces in years, but supposedly that’s coming,” said Derek Grossman, a senior defense analyst at Rand. “You may see Vietnam purchase new Russian tanks.”

Nguyen The Phuong, who studies Vietnam’s military affairs at the University of New South Wales in Australia, said Vietnam also needs new fighter jets and bigger warships in line with what Beijing uses to mark territory that Hanoi also claims in the South China Sea.

He added that the high-stakes security dynamics in Asia have put countries like Vietnam in a bind. “Western weapons are expensive and politically sensitive,” he said.

But would Vietnam use new Russian vessels to stand up to China over oil deposits explored with Moscow’s help and claimed by both Beijing and Hanoi?

For many countries, the Putin tour has raised another round of such aggravating questions. Beijing has clearly sided with Moscow over the war in Ukraine. In May, Mr. Putin visited Beijing, and while his trip to North Korea may bother Mr. Xi, analysts do not expect a major rupture in the relationship.

Angering one leader may risk punishment from another, or both.

“I think there’s some concern about Russia-China ties strengthening,” Mr. Grossman said, “and the potential for both countries to gang up on the smaller and medium-sized ones.”

At a defense conference in Singapore this month, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine said that was already happening. He accused China and Russia of colluding to undermine a peace summit in Switzerland led by Ukraine last week. Only a handful of Asian countries attended.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin visits Vietnam after signing North Korea pact

Two men dressed in suits walk towards the camera smiling.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Vietnam for a state visit, a day after signing a mutual defence pact with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, who offered his "full support" on Ukraine.

Mr Putin and Mr Kim inked a strategic treaty at a summit in Pyongyang that included a pledge to come to each other's aid if attacked.

Washington and its allies accuse North Korea of supplying ammunition and missiles to Russia for its war in Ukraine, and the deal fuelled fears of more deliveries.

Close-up of a man with bald head.

The US State Department said deepening Russia-North Korea ties were "of great concern" while a top Ukrainian official accused Pyongyang of abetting Moscow's "mass murder of Ukrainians".

Making his first visit to the isolated North in 24 years on Wednesday, Mr Putin said he did not rule out "military-technical cooperation" with Pyongyang, which like Moscow is under heavy international sanctions.

"Today, we are fighting together against the hegemonism and neo-colonial practices of the United States and its satellites," Mr Putin said.

The two countries have been allies since North Korea's founding after World War II and have drawn even closer since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un shake hands

Reacting to the Pyongyang visit, a US State Department spokesperson said no country should "give Mr Putin a platform to promote his war of aggression against Ukraine".

Trade and arms

Mr Putin received a rapturous reception in the North Korean capital, embraced by Kim as he stepped off his plane and greeted by cheering crowds.

His reception is likely to be more reserved in Vietnam, a major global manufacturing hub that has carefully hedged its foreign policy position for years, seeking to be friends with all but beholden to none.

In particular, it has sought to avoid picking sides in the growing US-China rivalry even as both superpowers look to boost their influence in South-East Asia.

Putin will spend Thursday meeting senior Vietnamese leaders including newly installed President To Lam and Nguyen Phu Trong, the powerful general secretary of the ruling Communist Party.

US President Joe Biden visited Hanoi in September to promote ties as his administration seeks to build up Vietnam as an alternative supplier of key high-tech components to reduce American dependence on China.

Beijing swiftly followed suit, with President Xi Jinping making his own state visit barely three months later.

Russian officials say Putin's visit will focus on economic, education and energy issues.

But observers say that in private, Ukraine and defence cooperation are likely to be on the table.

Russia and Vietnam have deep ties dating back to the 1950s, and for decades, Moscow was Hanoi's leading arms supplier.

Carl Thayer, emeritus professor of politics at Australia's University of New South Wales, said Vietnam has stopped "big ticket" military purchases since 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine.

"Russia and Vietnam have a mutual interest in resuming arms sales but Vietnam is hamstrung by the threat of US sanctions," he said.

Moscow court detains journalist Artyom Krieger on extremism charges

June 21, 2024 3:37 PM EDT

Share this:

Berlin, June 21, 2024—Russian authorities must release journalist Artyom Krieger, drop all charges against him, and stop persecuting the press, the Committee to Protect Journalists said Friday.

On June 18, the Basmanny district court in the capital Moscow placed Krieger, a journalist with the independent news outlet Sota.Vision, under pretrial detention for two months, news reports said.

Krieger will remain in custody at least until August 18 on charges of participating in the activities of the “extremist organization” FBK, the Moscow City Courts of General Jurisdiction said. If found guilty, Krieger could face up to six years in prison, under Russia’s Criminal Code .

Authorities banned the FBK or Anti-Corruption Foundation in 2021. The FBK was  founded by opposition leader Aleksei Navalny who died in an Arctic penal colony in February.

“The arrest of journalist Artyom Krieger is unjust and unacceptable. Russian authorities should immediately free Krieger and dismiss all charges against him,” said Gulnoza Said, CPJ’s Europe and Central Asia program coordinator, in New York. “It is time for Russian authorities to stop using tactics of intimidation to silence critical voices and allow independent journalists to work freely and without fear.”

A video posted on Telegram showed Krieger being pushed to the ground in his underwear during the early morning search of his Moscow apartment on June 18, after which he was taken to the Russian Investigation Committee for questioning .

“They came at six in the morning, put me on the floor … They separated everyone into different rooms, took Artyom and mom to his room …  They conducted a search, checked all electronic devices, took press cards, phone, and storage devices,” Sota.Vision quoted Krieger’s brother, Aleksandr Krieger, as saying.

According to Aleksandr Krieger, the search lasted about four hours and Artyom was presented with a list of names and asked if he recognized any of the individuals, including Navalny.

Sota.Vision rejected the charges against their journalist, stating that Krieger conducted live broadcasts from street protests and courthouses during high-profile trials but he “has never been an activist and was not affiliated with any parties or movements.”

The Russian government listed  Sota.Vision as a “foreign agent” in 2023, categorizing it as an entity under foreign influence or receiving external funding and requiring its content to be marked as such.

In 2022, Krieger was detained for eight days for “participating in a demonstration that caused obstruction” while on a livestreaming assignment for Sota.Vision.

Earlier this year, journalists Konstantin Gabov , Sergey Karelin, Olga Komleva , and Sota.Vision’s Antonina Favorskaya were also detained on charges of participating in the FBK. In May, Sota.Vision’s founder Aleksandra Ageyeva was fined 10,000 rubles (US$110) for violating the foreign agents law.

iStories journalists arrested in absentia

Separately, on June 17, Moscow’s Dorogomilovsky district court ordered the arrest in absentia of journalist Ekaterina Fomina and Roman Anin, editor-in-chief of the independent investigative news website iStories, for allegedly spreading “fake news” about the Russian military, news reports said. The Interior Ministry also added the two exiled journalists to its wanted list.

The “fake news” charge was filed against Fomina in January over her 2022 investigation for iStories into allegations of atrocities in Ukraine. If found guilty, she faces up to 10 years in prison under Article 207.3, Part 2 of Russia’s Criminal Code .

Fomina told CPJ that Russian authorities were trying to “defame” her name and wanted her to stop investigating war crimes in Ukraine.

“I can’t be silent when this bloody war is going [on],” said Fomina, who now works for the exiled broadcaster Dozhd TV (TV Rain).

In 2021, Anin and iStories were labelled as foreign agents by the Russian government. In 2022, the outlet was also declared an “undesirable organization,” which means it is  banned  from operating in Russia, and anyone who participates in or works to organize its activities faces up to  six years in prison  and  administrative fines .

In 2021, Anin’s apartment was searched and he was interrogated in relation to a privacy case filed against him by Olga Sechina, wife of the head of the state-controlled energy company Rosneft. In 2016, Anin published an investigation in Novaya Gazeta, where he worked at the time, which alleged that Sechina frequently used a multi-million-dollar yacht.
