The new zealand millennium cup announces a number of new entries set to join the 2024 edition….
One of the world's most iconic, and southern, superyacht sailing regattas is returning with new entrants in 2024. Brand new to the racing is 60 metre Perini Navi, Perseus^3, with race watchers excited to see her unique features - including the tallest carbon fibre mast built and extensive sail area - put to use on the Auckland race course.
“Perseus^3 was built to race specification and we’ve enjoyed building her reputation on the course across the world’s great superyacht regattas. With a race crew which has become known for its spirit and camaraderie, we’re looking forward to bringing Perseus^3 to New Zealand’s waters and letting her show her ability during the New Zealand Millennium Cup,” says Burger van der Walt, captain of Perseus^3.
It will join other early entries to the race including Royal Huisman’s Sassafras, the crew of which is competing after the regatta’s two-year hiatus.
“The team on Sassafras is excited at the prospect of racing in the New Zealand Millennium Cup after a two-year hiatus. The Waitemata Harbour and Hauraki Gulf offer a world-class sailing venue, with the backdrop of the City of Sails, home of the holder of the America’s Cup. We look forward to competing with visiting yachts and crews, to make the New Zealand Millennium Cup 2024 the best yet,” says Matt Lovett, captain of S/Y Sassafras.
Joining the race for the first time will be a fleet of multihulls. With a resurgence of cruising activity in the South Pacific, and growing numbers of the superyacht fleet forecast to arrive in the next seasons, this multihull class is set to offer a new aspect to the regatta’s racing with strong interest from Kiwi owners.
The regatta will take place from 23 to 26 February 2024 and will be raced on Auckland’s waters for the first time since 2013. It will form part of 2024’s inaugural Moana Auckland Festival; a celebration of the integral role of the sea in Auckland’s cultural and economic life.
The entry form and notice of race are available online now at millenniumcup.com. The regatta is comprised of New Zealand Millennium Cup, Multihull, and Corinthian divisions, with the role of principal race officer filled by Harold Bennett.

Shirley Robertson
The Super Yacht Racing Association (SYRA) has appointed Shirley Robertson as the new Manager of the organization for 100+ foot yachts. Robertson OBE made history by becoming the first British woman to win Olympic Gold Medals at consecutive Olympic Games and has become one of the most recognizable faces in the sport of sailing.
“We are delighted to have Shirley assume the role of Manager of the SYRA, taking the lead of an organization that is essential to superyacht racing,” said SYRA Chairperson Kate Branagh.
“The last decade saw many crucial areas addressed to enhance safe sailing and fair racing in this unique segment of sailboat racing. The SYRA’s priorities have shifted in recent years to fleet building, achieving more broad-based participation and expanding membership in the association, areas that Shirley will excel in.”
For fifteen years Robertson was the face of sailing as the host of CNN International’s flagship sports series CNN Mainsail, she has been the BBC’s lead anchor from four Olympic Games sailing venues, and has presented coverage from multiple regattas at the very pinnacle of yacht racing, the America’s Cup.
In addition, Robertson also hosts the long running Shirley Robertson’s Sailing Podcast, a monthly podcast featuring interviews with the biggest names in the sport of sailing.
Most recently on the water, Robertson has been managing a two-boat 6m campaign, but also spent two seasons competing on the doublehanded offshore circuit. Her sailing career has also seen over fifteen years of racing on the superyacht circuit, taking in some of the sport’s most prestigious regattas.
“Yacht racing is a life long passion of mine, and the superyacht series has been one of our sport’s shining lights for some time,” noted Robertson. “My relationship with racing superyachts goes back to my time racing with the SYRA founders Ed Dubois and Barry Houghton and it’s wonderful to now be carrying on their original vision.
“Expanding on the excellent work already done by the team at the SYRA while helping grow our membership at this exciting time in our sport is something I am really looking forward to.”
Robertson will take up this part-time role with immediate effect to advance and grow superyacht racing. Representing the collective voice for racing superyachts, regatta organizers and the industry, she will draw on her talents as a communicator as well as her experiences in team building and hosting conferences and exhibitions.

SUPERYACHT RACING ASSOCIATION

The SuperYacht Racing Association (SYRA) is a non-profit organization established in May, 2011. Membership is open to any superyacht owner (or owner’s representative) who participate in superyacht regattas, superyacht event organizers, superyacht industry related companies and individuals. The industry related companies include, but are not limited to designers, builders, sail makers, insurance providers, spar and winch manufacturers.
SuperYacht Racing Association BYLAWS (PDF)
This organization was formed for a very simple reason: “to enhance the enjoyment of superyacht owners”. Safe racing and fair racing are integral to the enjoyment of yacht owners. In fact, it was safety concerns and a very serious injury while racing that led to preliminary discussions and the initial meeting in London in November, 2010. Addressing both of these complex issues is a major undertaking for SYRA with safe racing being the top priority in year one and fleet building being a focus in recent years. At the present time the association is an advisory and informational organization that establishes superyacht racing policy for regatta organizers.
The SYRA’s member yacht owners, captains and companies address ongoing challenges that are unique to superyacht racing. The organization brings value to yacht owners in the form of safe racing, fair competition and increased participation. Members have a voice in influencing the important issues that are unique to superyacht racing.

After spending 45 years building luxury yachts for industry heavyweights such as Sanlorenzo, Codecasa, and Benetti, Tureddi has finally decided to create something for itself.
The Italian shipyard is launching a fleet of semi-custom superyachts measuring between 98 and 197 feet. The first vessel to be revealed under the Tureddi name is an aluminum 112-footer called the Bluephire 34 .

This 220-Footer Could Be the World's First Fuel-Free, All-Electric Superyacht
Designed by Christian Leyk of Coquine Design , the newcomer blends cutting-edge technology with the quality craftsmanship for which Tureddi is renowned. The in-house team has decades of experience in construction, having meticulously crafted 60 yachts in Viareggio and Livorno over the past half-century.
Described as a “sports car of the sea,” Bluephire is an open cruiser with sleek, elegant lines and a low-slung profile. Designed for a Mediterranean lifestyle, the yacht is geared toward indoor-outdoor living and can cover some serious nautical miles. With a beam of almost 23 feet and an interior volume of 230 GT, Bluephire also offers a vast and comfortable interior.
The loft-like living quarters center around a striking glass salon that opens at both ends to connect the interior and exterior. The main living area features a comfortable lounge, a dining area to starboard, and a bar to port. The foredeck is dotted with sun beds, the lower salon is adorned with cozy lounges, and the pilot house offers another relaxation spot near the helm. Bluephire is also outfitted with three staterooms for up to six guests and well-equipped crew quarters. The yacht can be customized to the owner, with several options for color schemes and other details.
In terms of grunt, Bluephire is powered by two MAN V-8 engines rated at 1,000 hp that enable a maximum speed of 35 knots and a range of 450 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 14 knots. You can also opt for two MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines for a range of 370 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 25 knots.
Bluephire is currently for sale with Adrian Soos and Thomas Merlier of Ocean Independence , with an asking price of roughly $12.3 million (€11.5 million). The team says the yacht can be completed in a mere 18 months.

Justice Clarence Thomas has taken several trips with GOP mega-donor Harlan Crow in recent years.
Democrats released new documents last week saying Thomas failed to disclose three additional trips.
Here is a list of the trips Thomas and Crow have taken together — that we know of.
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is once again facing renewed scrutiny amid details about undisclosed trips he took with GOP mega-donor Harlan Crow .
Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee last week released documents showing Thomas failed to disclose three trips he took aboard Crow's private jet in 2017, 2019, and 2021. According to Sen. Dick Durbin, the flights were gifted to Thomas .
Thomas also recently amended his 2019 financial disclosure to include two vacations paid for by Crow, according to ProPublica, that year to Indonesia and the Bohemian Grove, an exclusive gentleman's club in Monte Rio, California. ProPublica first reported on the undisclosed trips last year.
The justice has defended the missing disclosures, saying he was advised that disclosing hospitality gifts from people who had no business before the court was unnecessary.
Thomas and Crow have been friends for more than thirty years. Both have said they don't talk about politics or legal cases together, but legal experts and lawmakers have expressed ethics concerns that Crow could have an influence on Thomas, a sitting member of the most powerful court in the country.
Michael Zona, a spokesperson for Crow, told BI the billionaire provided information relevant to the Senate Judiciary Committee's requests going back seven years.
"Despite his serious and continued concerns about the legality and necessity of the inquiry, Mr. Crow engaged in good faith negotiations with the Committee from the beginning to resolve the matter," the statement said. "As a condition of this agreement, the Committee agreed to end its probe with respect to Mr. Crow."
An attorney for Thomas, Elliot S. Berke, told Business Insider the vacation information Crow provided to the Senate Judiciary Committee falls under the "personal hospitality exemption," which means it did not need to be disclosed.
"The Judicial Conference changed this provision last year, and Justice Thomas has fully complied with the new disclosure requirement," Berke said.
The Supreme Court did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.
On May 7, 2017, Thomas traveled on Crow's private jet from St. Louis to Kalispell, Montana, a small mountain town known as a gateway to Glacier National Park .
According to documents released by Senate Democrats last week, the Montana excursion is among the three previously unknown trips that Thomas failed to disclose.
It remains unclear what Thomas was doing in Montana; BI could not identify any public appearances the justice made in the state at that time.
On May 9, 2017, Crow's jet left Montana for Dallas, where the billionaire resides. Beyond the flight on Crow's jet, it's unclear how much of the trip Crow paid for.
ProPublica reported last year that Thomas has vacationed at Crow's lakeside resort, Camp Topridge, nearly every year for the last two decades. The secluded property is located in the Adirondacks in upstate New York and is only accessible by invitation from the billionaire himself.
According to the outlet, Topridge guests are treated to meals prepared by private chefs, guided fishing experiences, and private concerts.
During a July 2017 Topridge trip, Thomas and Crow were joined by an array of corporate leaders and political activists, including major Republican donors and executives from Verizon and PricewaterhouseCoopers, ProPublica reported.
Thomas even appears in a painting hung at the resort, which shows the Supreme Court justice conversing with conservative legal activist Leonard Leo, according to the outlet.
Thomas's quick round trip to his hometown of Savannah, Georgia , was the second undisclosed trip revealed last week. It wasn't clear what Thomas was doing in Georgia, but he still has family members living there, including his mother.
Thomas and Crow's 2019 Bali vacation was the centerpiece of ProPublica's original 2023 report. Although first reported last year, disclosure details about the Indonesia trip were included in recently amended financial disclosure forms and the Judiciary Committee's report.
According to ProPublica, Thomas and his wife, Ginni Thomas , spent nine days vacationing with Crow and others as they sightsaw on several islands and spent time on the billionaire's 162-foot superyacht, the Michaela Rose.
Thomas amended past filings to include a 2019 vacation he took with Crow to Bohemian Grove , an exclusive, all-male club in Monte Rio, California.
ProPublica previously reported on Thomas' trips to the gentleman's retreat. The club's prestigious alumni include US presidents, military officials, artists, and top business leaders.
On June 29, 2021, Thomas traveled from Washington, DC, to San Jose, California, aboard Crow's jet, The Washington Post reported. He returned to DC the same day. The reason for the trip remains unknown.
On July 7, 2022, Thomas again boarded Crow's plane to travel to Camp Topridge — possibly for his annual summer vacation at his billionaire buddy's hideaway, ProPublica reported last year.
ProPublica said Thomas cruised through New Zealand aboard Crow's superyacht roughly a decade ago. The outlet reported that the Supreme Court Justice also boarded the Michaela Rose for a river cruise around Savannah, Georgia. A photo of Thomas donning an embroidered shirt referencing a 2007 trip through the Greek Islands suggests the justice may have also vacationed in the Mediterranean.
Thomas has also made frequent use of Crow's private jet for quick day trips and business travel, according to media reports.

The Indianapolis 500 is racing to Fox after circling the track many years at NBC
IndyCar announced Thursday that Fox would become the new home of the NTT IndyCar Series and the iconic race starting in 2025. The new pact means Fox will have rights to two of auto-racing’s best known events — the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500, part of NASCAR.
Regulators shouldn’t blow the whistle on venu sports just yet, emmys update submission rules ahead of voting, lowering threshold required for nom and invites members to join scripted variety jury, popular on variety.
But NBC has new reasons to count its sports budgets more carefully. The company is believed to have an agreement in place to take over a significant number of NBA games that have been under the aegis of Warner Bros. Discovery — a deal that is expected to be costly. NBC recently ceded rights to the French Open , which will move to Warner starting next year.
Under terms of the new IndyCar pact, Fox will air every 2025 NTT race on its broadcast network and the Fox Sports app, as well as on Fox Deportes. Fox will also provide coverage of Indy 500 qualifications on both Saturday and Sunday, bringing the total number of broadcast network windows to 19, an expanded total for NTT. IndyCar will become the only premier motorsport in the United States with exclusive major broadcast network coverage for all its races.
“This represents unrivaled exposure and provides an unparalleled growth opportunity for the most competitive and entertaining motorsport on the planet,” IndyCar CEO Mark Miles said. “Fox ports is a fully committed partner, ready to bring engaging and technically innovative coverage to millions of fans across the country while also promoting IndyCar thoroughly across all its platforms.”
Meanwhile, Fox will set aside a five-hour window on the broadcast network for Indianapolis 500 coverage. .
Fox said decisions about talent would be unveiled at a later date.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Justice Clarence Thomas on Friday belatedly acknowledged more travel paid by Republican megadonor Harlan Crow, while several colleagues reported six-figure payments as part of book deals.
Thomas, who has faced criticism for failing to report luxury trips paid for by Crow and others over many years, said in his annual financial disclosure that, in 2019, Crow paid for a hotel room in Bali, Indonesia, for a single night, and food and lodging at a private club in Sonoma County, California. He did not report any travel paid by others last year.
The disclosure on Indonesia is curious for what it omits: the rest of the trip. ProPublica reported last year that Thomas flew to Indonesia on Crow’s private jet and then boarded his superyacht for an islands tour, one of many trips Crow has given to Thomas and his wife, Ginni, over the years.
Another justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson , reported eye-popping numbers, a nearly $900,000 advance for her upcoming memoir, and attention-grabbing gifts, four tickets to a Beyoncé concert valued at $3,700 from the singer herself.
Jackson was one of four Supreme Court justices who reported sizable income from book deals. Justice Brett Kavanaugh reported being paid $340,000 by the conservative Regnery Publishing company. The company was sold and the book is to be published by an imprint at Hachette Book Group, according to Axios, which also reported this week that Kavanaugh’s book will deal with his contentious confirmation hearing that included allegations of sexual misconduct, which he has denied. The court confirmed Friday that the justice is writing a legal memoir.
Justices Neil Gorsuch and Sonia Sotomayor reported royalty income of $250,000 and nearly $90,000, respectively.
In their day jobs, the justices are being paid $298,500 this year, except for Chief Justice John Roberts, who earns $312,200.
The only justice whose report was not available Friday is Samuel Alito, who received an extension for up to 90 days, as he does most years. The justice has separately been under scrutiny over flags that flew outside homes he owned. He has said they were raised by his wife.
Jackson, the first Black woman on the nation’s highest court, signed a book contract soon after taking her seat in 2022. The book, “Lovely One,” is to be published in September.
The total value of her book deal has not been publicly disclosed, but it is expected to rival if not exceed what Sotomayor was paid for her memoir, “My Beloved World,” more than $3 million.
Among the current justices, only Roberts, Alito and Justice Elena Kagan have so far not cut book deals. Thomas received a $1.5 million advance, stunning at the time, for his 2007 book, “My Grandfather’s Son.” Justice Amy Coney Barrett in 2022 reported receiving $425,000 for a yet-to-be-released book, part of a reported $2 million deal she signed soon after joining the court in 2020.
The disclosures paint a partial picture of the justices’ finances, as they are not required to reveal the value of their homes or, for those who are married, their spouses’ salary.
The justices adopted an ethics code in November, though it lacks a means of enforcement. The code treats travel, food and lodging as expenses rather than gifts, for which monetary values must be reported. Justices aren’t required to attach a value to expenses.
In March, the federal judiciary began requiring judges to disclose travel-related gifts and their values — rather than reporting such gifts as reimbursements. The justices say they generally abide by the same rules, but Thomas did not disclose the cost of the Bali hotel.
Some Democratic lawmakers are continuing to press legislation that would require the court to adopt a binding code of conduct and provide for investigations of alleged violations. But the prospect for such legislation is considered remote in a closely divided Congress.
Only two justices reported receiving gifts last year. Thomas said he was given two photo albums worth $2,000 by Terrence Giroux and his wife. Giroux is the executive director emeritus of the Horatio Alger Association.
Jackson received artwork for her Supreme Court office worth $12,500. And then there were the Beyoncé tickets, worth more than $900 a pop. Beyoncé performed two concerts in the Washington area in August 2023, though Jackson’s disclosure does not say when or where the tickets were for.
“Justice Jackson is Crazy in Love with Beyonce’s music,” Supreme Court spokeswoman Patricia McCabe said, invoking a Beyoncé song. “Who isn’t?”
