Superyacht racing returns to New Zealand

The new zealand millennium cup announces a number of new entries set to join the 2024 edition….

One of the world's most iconic, and southern, superyacht sailing regattas is returning with new entrants in 2024. Brand new to the racing is 60 metre Perini Navi, Perseus^3, with race watchers excited to see her unique features - including the tallest carbon fibre mast built and extensive sail area - put to use on the Auckland race course.

“Perseus^3 was built to race specification and we’ve enjoyed building her reputation on the course across the world’s great superyacht regattas. With a race crew which has become known for its spirit and camaraderie, we’re looking forward to bringing Perseus^3 to New Zealand’s waters and letting her show her ability during the New Zealand Millennium Cup,” says Burger van der Walt, captain of Perseus^3.

It will join other early entries to the race including Royal Huisman’s Sassafras, the crew of which is competing after the regatta’s two-year hiatus.

“The team on Sassafras is excited at the prospect of racing in the New Zealand Millennium Cup after a two-year hiatus. The Waitemata Harbour and Hauraki Gulf offer a world-class sailing venue, with the backdrop of the City of Sails, home of the holder of the America’s Cup. We look forward to competing with visiting yachts and crews, to make the New Zealand Millennium Cup 2024 the best yet,” says Matt Lovett, captain of S/Y Sassafras.

Joining the race for the first time will be a fleet of multihulls. With a resurgence of cruising activity in the South Pacific, and growing numbers of the superyacht fleet forecast to arrive in the next seasons, this multihull class is set to offer a new aspect to the regatta’s racing with strong interest from Kiwi owners.

The regatta will take place from 23 to 26 February 2024 and will be raced on Auckland’s waters for the first time since 2013. It will form part of 2024’s inaugural Moana Auckland Festival; a celebration of the integral role of the sea in Auckland’s cultural and economic life.

The entry form and notice of race are available online now at millenniumcup.com. The regatta is comprised of New Zealand Millennium Cup, Multihull, and Corinthian divisions, with the role of principal race officer filled by Harold Bennett.

New Zealand’s Millennium Cup Superyacht Regatta Moves to Auckland

New Zealand’s Millennium Cup Superyacht Regatta Moves to Auckland

June 19, 2023 - New Zealand -  The South Pacific’s superyacht regatta will move from the Bay of Islands to Auckland next year, running from 23-26 February. The New Zealand Millennium Cup regatta , known for promoting superyacht cruising in the region, will move to Auckland next year, it has been announced.

“As our sister regatta the Superyacht Cup Palma gets underway this week, we’re very pleased to share the New Zealand Millennium Cup will add its name to the superyacht regattas raced in the heart of port cities,” says organiser Stacey Cook.  “When the New Zealand Millennium Cup is raced from 23 - 26th February 2024, it will be with Auckland, the City of Sails, as its backdrop.”

The regatta is known for fun, exciting racing with a Kiwi flavour all of its own and adds another string to the bow of attractions for superyachts visiting New Zealand. Moving the regatta to Auckland means it will be adjacent to the country’s largest superyacht marinas and comes as part of a summer of events supported by Tātaki Auckland Unlimited.

A summer of events

The move is designed around the long-term growth of the regatta, tying it to other events across the New Zealand summer season and placing the Cup in the heart of New Zealand’s marine sector. Hosting the regatta in Auckland allows for greater synergy with companies of the New Zealand marine industry, as well as further exposure of the industry to the high-value superyacht market.

Superyacht crew and industry gathered in Auckland to celebrate New Zealand’s annual Superyacht Welcome Function, which took place on 7 December 2023.

The event, hosted by the industry association NZ Marine , is the largest superyacht networking event in the southern hemisphere and sees local industry companies host captains, crew and guests.

Crew from more than 35 yachts were invited to the event, held on Auckland’s waterfront, with those celebrating their first season in New Zealand mingling with crew glad to be back.

NZ Marine’s Peter Busfield welcomed superyacht captains and crew and thanked them for choosing to come to New Zealand, as well as acknowledging the 47 sponsor companies that made the event possible.

The event is also a chance for crew to meet with representatives from New Zealand’s extensive superyacht refit, maintenance, parts and supplies and support industry, to gain information on the industry’s capabilities, and allow crew to share cruising information.

super yachts in auckland 2023

The Superyacht Welcome Function profiles New Zealand’s superyacht-friendly regulations and easy clearance procedures, which include a two-year temporary import period and tax concessions.

Those regulations are supported by the expansion of marina and shipyard infrastructure in Auckland, Northland and Tauranga, making New Zealand an efficient place for superyacht cruising and refit work, starting from clearance into the country.

NZ Marine, the organisation that administers Superyacht New Zealand, also invites crew to pick up a copy of the Destination & Cruising New Zealand book, which is available for download. Detailing the best of New Zealand cruising, it acts as a companion for crew both planning their New Zealand journey and those already in the country.

The guide has just been re-released with updated information and is available to download online courtesy of NZ Marine and Superyacht New Zealand.

New Zealand’s Millennium Cup superyacht regatta moves to Auckland

Organisers of New Zealand’s Millennium Cup superyacht regatta have announced the event will move 145 miles along the coast from the Bay of Islands to the city of Auckland for the 2024 edition.

The event, which is supported by Tātaki Auckland Unlimited and held from 23rd to 26th February 2024, will bring the South Pacific regatta away from the Bay of Islands’ remote, natural harbour and into New Zealand’s largest city.

It is hoped the move will offer participants and visitors easier access to the event thanks to Auckland’s major airport. It also hopes to improve the experience for superyacht owners, as the regatta will now be held in close proximity to the country’s major superyacht marinas such as Silo Marina and Orams Marina.

“As our sister regatta, the Superyacht Cup Palma, gets underway this week, we’re very pleased to share the New Zealand Millennium Cup will add its name to the superyacht regattas raced in the heart of major cities,” said organiser Stacey Cook. “When the New Zealand Millennium Cup is raced, it will be with Auckland, the City of Sails, as its backdrop.”

Entry to the regatta will open soon with entry forms available on the event's website.

The news comes after the dates of the 37th America’s Cup, which will be hosted in Barcelona in 2024, were announced in December.

30  Crewed Luxury Yachts for Charter in New Zealand

New Zealand Yacht Charters

Charter vacations in the South Pacific cruising grounds of New Zealand benefit from an abundance of activities and itinerary choices offered by the combination of the North and South Islands. With the Tasman Sea to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east, the sailing conditions are excellent and each year play host to the prestigious superyacht regatta, the New Zealand Millennium Cup.

New Zealand Luxury Yacht Charter Guide

Both the North Island and South Island of New Zealand feature coastlines peppered with a canvas of bays, harbours, fjords and stunning beaches. Renting a private crewed motor yacht, sailing boat or expedition yacht here is a fantastic way to explore the breath taking scenery any time of year, from the glaciers and snow-capped mountains in winter to the winding vineyards and semi-tropical beaches in the summer.

New Zealand is the perfect destination for active charterers looking to partake in adrenaline fuelled activities on water and land as well as try out all of the toys carried on board your charter yacht. Known as the ‘white knuckle capital of the world’, there are endless opportunities to create an experience of a lifetime as well as enjoy cruising conditions and sheltered anchorages that have attracted sailing enthusiasts for hundreds of years.

Luxury Yacht Charter Itineraries in New Zealand

New Zealand’s South Island is the less populated, more rugged of the two and is ideal for more relaxed exploration of the spectacular Marlborough Wine Country and a varied landscape. In contrast, the North Island is home to some of the world’s most vibrant modern cities such as Auckland which offers a great selection of shops, bars, restaurants and busy harbours. Auckland is also the gateway to 144 islands and bays of the Bay of Islands which can create a comprehensive and varied itinerary all of their own.

Auckland Harbour Classic 2023

Photo of YachtBoatNews

There’s a new race, a new challenge, a party and a spectacle to Auckland Harbour – introducing the Harbour Classic!

From the people who bring you the famous Coastal Classic, the biggest coastal race in the Southern Hemisphere, we are now bringing you another race based on the famous Barcolana Regatta in Trieste, Italy.

Just like the Coastal Classic the Barcolana Regatta started with a small number of boats. It now holds the Guinness World Record as the largest regatta in the world with 2689 boats competing and is the biggest event for the city of Trieste.

And now it’s our turn!

Dedicated to all lovers of the sea and sailing and those who do not want to miss out on a one-of-a-kind experience, the Harbour Classic will take place from 31 March to 1 April 2023. (Race day 1 April – don’t be fooled – it’s no joke).

The Harbour Classic is an event not only for sailors, it’s also a spectacle to see. We are currently working with Auckland Unlimited to turn this event into a festival of fun, parties and prizegiving, and having boats moored within this village atmosphere.

On the same starting line expert sailors, sailing lovers, and enthusiasts, race side by side on boats of different sizes divided into several divisions according to their overall length.

The proposed 14 nautical race will start at North Head, running along the north shore beaches to Torbay returning to North Head through the Rangitoto Channel.

Welcoming Superyachts to New Zealand in 2021

By Christina Tsangaris

Helen Clark, Patron of the Emirates Team NZ, joins us on the shores of OneOcean Port Vell Marina in Barcelona for part two of our interview. We discuss how hosting the America’s Cup in 2021 will transform Auckland into the ultimate superyacht hub, pushing the destination into the spotlight for superyacht owners and charter guests.

Auckland has a rich maritime history, tell us what makes this region perfect for the America’s Cup as well as a charter destination for superyacht owners? Auckland has a big inner harbour and a large protected gulf which is ideal for yachting. Aside from being a sailing paradise, it is incredibly accessible. The entrance into the inner Auckland harbour and the view of the Rangitoto Island, a volcanic island in the Hauraki Gulf near Auckland, is truly breathtaking. We really are excited to share these spots with superyacht owners who will be visiting for the America’s Cup in 2021.

Likewise, we will have other events taking place the same year as the America’s Cup. The superyachts’ racing for the Millennium Cup and the Junior’s America’s Cup will be complementary events to the Cup. 2021 is also the year in which New Zealand chairs the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation organisation (APEC) again, and leaders will be coming from around the Asia-Pacific rim to Auckland.

Every year the America’s Cup brings a fleet of superyachts which berth there. What does the region of Auckland offer in terms of infrastructure? Auckland has geared up twice before as host of the Americas Cup racing and it will gear up again. When hosting in the early 2000s, there was a lot of redevelopment so that Auckland could accommodate the bases and provide services for the competing yachting teams as well as for the visiting superyachts.

For the next Americas Cup, there will be an expansion of the berthing infrastructure and of refit facilities. There is a cohesive cluster of companies in the marine services sector. Close to Auckland there is a training facility for masters and other skills relevant to sailing super yachts. New Zealand also has legal and other structures which are friendly to visiting superyachts to come to the region.

How do you see the America’s Cup evolving New Zealand as a superyacht hub? You really can’t overestimate what hosting the America’s Cup has done and will do for Auckland. It has contributed to making the city an international destination with luxury hotels, bespoke real estate, and fine dining.

In tourism, the best strategy is to prioritise value over volume. New Zealand is not trying to compete with crowded Mediterranean destinations or oversaturated European cities. We have good infrastructure, crime is low, and we operate in a global language.

The country as a whole offers a wide range of experiences for visitors from our subtropical North to our sub-Antarctic south. Take our West Coast with glaciers terminating very close to the coast. Whether you enjoy wine tasting, golfing, canyoning or eco-tourism, New Zealand has something for every superyacht owner and charter guest. Its versatility and beauty are its appeal – along with our legendary Kiwi hospitality!

How important are operational partners like BWA Yachting in ensuring the support of captains, crew and superyacht owners when berthing in Auckland for the America’s Cup? The support from BWA Yachting is huge. They offer a comprehensive and holistic service that superyachts truly rely on. From provisioning and bespoke itineraries to practical elements such as customs and immigration when visiting during the America’s Cup, they are every superyacht owner’s port of call. After Emirates Team New Zealand won the Cup again in Bermuda, superyacht owners would have begun discussing their plans to visit.

"Auckland has geared up twice before as host of the Americas Cup racing and it will gear up again. When hosting in the early 2000s, there was a lot of redevelopment so that Auckland could accommodate the bases and provide services for the competing yachting teams as well as for the visiting superyachts."
