All aboard: New York Boat Show returns to Javits Center

At first glance, the Fiat 500 on display at the Javits Center looks like it should be at the Auto Show.

But this version is a boat — one of hundreds of boats on display at the Discover Boating New York Boat Show.

What You Need To Know

The discover boating new york boat show runs from jan. 24 to jan. 28 at the javits center in manhattan founded in 1905, it is the world's first and longest-running boat show, with hundreds of boats of all sizes and styles the queen of the show, which is the largest yacht, is the pardo gt52. it stretches 52 feet, and costs just over $2 million.

“Here at the show you are going to see everything from a runabout boat that’s about 18 feet all the way up to the 52-foot Pardo, which is the queen of the show,” said Carrie Waible, spokesperson for the show.

The Pardo GT52 is the biggest boat in length on the Javits’ floor, and can be yours for just over $2 million.

The show is the world’s first and longest-running boat show, founded in 1905. There are plenty of boats for every budget and lifestyle, from personal watercraft like wave runners to fun party pontoon boats and fishing boats.

Visitors can climb on board, look and take the plunge and buy.

“People don’t realize the boat show is basically a boat sale. We have more boats, more brands, and the best deals you are going to get if you are buying a boat,” Waible said.

The show is also trying to sell the boating lifestyle, which many people got in on during the past four years.

“During the pandemic, we saw more than a million first time boat buyers take to the water in about three years, a little bit less than three years. That demand is still very strong with boat sales keeping pace,” Waible said.

The show runs through Sunday, Jan. 28. For tickets, cruise over to the Boat Show's website .

The New York Boat Show: Then and Now

yacht show nyc

Jan 21, 2023

The New York Boat Show is the world’s oldest and longest-running boat show, having been held annually since 1905. It is still one of the most notable boat shows throughout the year, with many people making plans to attend. The five-day event features numerous boat displays, marine accessories, and interactive workshops. Let’s compare the boat show from then to now; a lot can change in a decade.

(Source: International Boat Industry)

The Start in 1905

The boat show was originally displayed in Madison Square Garden from February 21st – March 9th, 1905. This would be known as the world’s first boat show to ever exist. Some of the boats, which arrived at the show on horse-drawn trailers, required proof of seaworthiness, so the old Madison Square Garden’s floor was transformed into a lake.

If that wasn’t innovative and cool enough for the time period already, you can see how the boat show was organized in its early stages by looking at the photos in this blog. The boating industry was just starting to take off when it quickly grew beyond all recognition.

Today in 2023

A lot has changed over the years, but one thing hasn’t: the New York Boat Show is still the show for boating enthusiasts. The exhibition has since moved to the Jacob Javits Convention Center and will only be on display from the 25th thru the 29th of January. It may be cold in New York this time of year, but there are advantages to attending an indoor show, you won’t have to deal with the elements.

Please visit their website for more information on attending The New York Boat Show. Any new information will be posted here .

Nato leader blasts china for helping russia while courting west: ‘you can’t have it both ways’.

WASHINGTON – NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg ripped Chinese leaders Monday for publicly claiming to support Ukraine in its war against Russia, but quietly backing Moscow and sending it military supplies .

“China is fueling the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II,” Stoltenberg said during an event at the Wilson Center in DC. “At the same time, it wants to maintain good relations with the West.

“Well, Beijing cannot have it both ways.”

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg

Since Russia’s invasion began in February 2022, China has publicly stated its desire for peace and maintained a publicly neutral position.

As recently as June 3, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning claimed Beijing “values its strategic partnership with Ukraine.”

“Since the full escalation of the Ukraine crisis, China has maintained communication and cooperation with Ukraine,” she said. “China is still Ukraine’s largest trading partner. Our Embassy in Ukraine continues to function normally.”

However, China is also Russia’s largest trading power – a position that has been solidified after dozens of countries around the world sanctioned exports and imports to and from Russia.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi

While China claims it has not sent Russia any weapons for use in Ukraine, US officials say Beijing has rendered the distinction meaningless by supplying Moscow critical technological components for war.

“Publicly, [Chinese] President Xi [Jinping] has tried to create the impression that he’s taking a back seat in this conflict to avoid sanctions and keep trade flowing,” Stoltenberg said Monday.

Beijing has also sent material that is used in the production of weapons, including “missiles, tanks [and] aircraft,” according to the NATO chief.

“Beijing is sharing high-end technologies, like semiconductors or dual-use items. Last year, Russia imported 90% of its microelectronics from China,” he said. “China is also working to provide Russia with improved supplied capability and imagery.

“All of this enables much death and destruction on Ukraine, bolsters Russia’s defense industrial base and evades the impact of sanctions and export controls.”

The US has taken notice, sanctioning seven China-based companies last week for shipping millions of dollars worth of material to Russia, including items which could be used in weapons systems.

“This idea that we can distinguish between the threats we see in Europe posed by Russia and the threats and the challenges of Xi in the Asia-Pacific posed by China – that we can separate those is wrong,” Stoltenberg said. “Our security is global, not regional, and that’s very clearly demonstrated in Ukraine.”

China has said it respects Ukraine’s territorial integrity – an argument Beijing uses to justify its illegal claims on large swaths of land in the South China Sea, including Taiwan.

However, China has neither pushed Russian tyrant Vladimir Putin to return Crimea to Ukraine nor implored his proxies to restore the eastern Donbas region to Kyiv.

Summit on Peace in Ukraine

China has also made other pro-Moscow moves, including pushing a controversial peace plan last year that would have seen Ukraine submit to Russian demands with little gained in return.

The US decried the mooted truce, with National Security Council spokesman John Kirby saying that while a peace plan “may sound good … any proposals from [China] … would be one-sided and reflect only the Russian perspective.”

This past weekend, China snubbed a peace summit held in Lucerne, Switzerland that was attended by representatives of more than 100 nations and international organizations.

Beijing declined an invitation after learning that Moscow would not be represented.

“China has repeatedly stressed that the international peace conference needs to meet the three important elements – namely, recognition from both Russia and Ukraine , equal participation of all parties and fair discussion of all peace plans,” Mao said. “As far as China is concerned, the meeting does not yet seem to meet these three elements and that is exactly why China would not be able to take part in the meeting.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told summit attendees Saturday that he hoped Russia – and by extension, China – would attend the next iteration of the event.

Nick Mavar, Fisherman and ‘Deadliest Catch’ Star, Dies at 59

Mr. Mavar, who ran a fishing operation in Alaska, starred in the reality television show for 16 years and captained his own boat.

A man in an orange parka and trousers leans against a pile of snow that is about as high as his shoulder. The word “Northwestern” can be seen behind him.

By John Yoon

Nick Mavar, a commercial salmon fisherman known for his tenacity and resourcefulness who was also a deckhand on the Discovery Channel’s extreme fishing reality show “Deadliest Catch,” died on Thursday at a hospital in King Salmon, Alaska. He was 59.

His death was confirmed by his wife, Julie Mavar. His nephew Jake Anderson said that Mr. Mavar had a heart attack on Thursday while on a ladder at a boatyard in Naknek, Alaska, where he ran his fishing operation, and fell onto a dry dock.

The Bristol Bay Borough Police Department in Naknek confirmed that Mr. Mavar had died but declined to share more details.

“Deadliest Catch,” which follows crab fishermen on their strenuous and sometimes brutal job off the Alaskan coast, is one of the top-rated programs on basic cable, drawing millions of viewers.

The show premiered in 2005, and Mr. Mavar appeared in 98 episodes, working on a fishing boat called the F/V Northwestern until 2021.

He left the show while filming an expedition in 2020 after his appendix ruptured, revealing a cancerous tumor, Mr. Anderson said.

Mr. Mavar was also injured while shooting an episode in 2011, when a large hook came loose during a storm and struck him in the face, breaking his nose.

In the fishing community, Mr. Mavar was known for overcoming adversities, including the cancer and an earlier heart attack, said Mr. Anderson, who appeared on “Deadliest Catch” while crabbing in Bristol Bay with Mr. Mavar and other members of his family.

Nickola Mavar Jr. was born on Oct. 21, 1964, in San Pedro, Calif., to Nickola Mavar Sr. and Maureen (Whelan) Mavar.

He grew up in a fishing family, and his father was a fisherman who emigrated from Croatia in 1959. While a mechanical engineering student in California, the elder Mr. Mavar at first fished part time until becoming a commercial fisherman, according to an interview with an oral history program at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.

When the younger Mr. Mavar got his own start in fishing in the early 1990s, the cost of obtaining a permit and running a fishery meant he could not afford a fully functioning boat, Mr. Anderson said.

Mr. Mavar, lacking dish soap and sponges, often washed dishes with Windex, slept in trash bags to keep dry in a flooded boat, and reeled up the net by hand because of broken hydraulics, Mr. Anderson said.

“You could give the guy a tin pail, and he could make it catch fish,” he said. “You could give him a bicycle, and he could make it float.”

One of Mr. Mavar’s boats, named Miss Colleen after his sister, was purchased from his father when he retired, Mr. Anderson said. Soon, Mr. Mavar ran a fishery in Alaska, then took a job working for a boat owner, Sig Hansen, on the Northwestern, which brought him to the show.

“The passing of Nick Mavar spread through the fishing community like wildfire,” Mr. Hansen wrote on social media , adding that Mr. Mavar had worked on his family boat for more than 25 years and was a good friend.

After leaving the Northwestern, Mr. Mavar captained his own salmon boat in Bristol Bay and golfed frequently with Ms. Mavar, whom he married in 2021, Mr. Anderson said.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Mavar is survived by his father; two children from a previous marriage, Myles and Emme Mavar; a stepdaughter, Jensen Weynands; two brothers, Brian and John; and a sister, Colleen.

Throughout nearly two decades on television, Mr. Anderson said, Mr. Mavar did not care much about the fame that came from being on the show.

“He was a fisherman through and through,” Mr. Anderson said, “and the camera was something that was just there.”
