Royal Huisman

Demonstrating the art of Dutch maritime craftsmanship, superyacht builder Royal Huisman builds and refits custom luxury sailing yachts and motor yachts at its shipyard in Vollenhove, the Netherlands.

History of Royal Huisman

In 1884, Jan Jans Huisman founded the Huisman Shipyard, which continues to be family-owned and operated to this day. In the early years, luxury yacht builder Huisman produced smaller wooden motor and sailing yachts. The shipyard began building in steel in 1954, and also pioneered aluminium yacht construction. In 1959, Jan Huisman’s son Wolter Huisman took over as the head of luxury yacht builder Huisman, steering the shipyard into successful racing sailing yacht production and eventually entering the custom superyacht market. In 1975, Huisman launched sailing yacht mast and rigging division, Rondal. Upon the shipyard’s 100th anniversary in 1984, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands gave luxury yacht builder Huisman the title “Royal”, and the firm was renamed Royal Huisman. In 2004, Wolter Huisman retired and his daughter, Alice, became managing director of superyacht builder Royal Huisman.

Notable Royal Huisman Yachts

Among the many celebrated superyachts launched by luxury yacht builder Royal Huisman are the reconstructed J-Class Sailing Yacht Endeavour , delivered in 1989 to former owner Elizabeth Meyer. The 47.42-metre Sailing Yacht Hyperion , delivered in 1996 to American entrepreneur Jim Clark, founder of Netscape, featured a record-setting 59-metre carbon-fibre mast and advanced computer system. In the early 2000s Clark returned to superyacht builder Royal Huisman to commission the 90-meter schooner Athena . The 58.04-metre Sailing Yacht Ethereal , launched by Royal Huisman in 2009, set the standard for environmentally conscious superyacht construction.

Dutch superyacht builder Royal Huisman works with yacht owners and yacht designers around the world to build custom sailing yachts and motor yachts in steel, aluminium and advanced composites. The shipyard also provides superyacht refit and reconstruction. Royal Huisman’s Rondal division specialises in the manufacture of masts, winches and other rigging for luxury and racing sailing yachts.

Meet The World’s Largest Sportfishing Yacht

The world’s largest sportfishing yacht, the six-deck, 171-foot all-aluminum Project 406 from Royal Huisman and Vripack yacht design , is finally here.

It’s been three years since Yachting first reported on Project 406’s development. Details and interior views of the build are still being kept quiet, but what we do know is that Royal Huisman says the supersize sportfishing yacht is headed to its final staging area and preparing to launch in Amsterdam soon.

In a press release the shipyard stated, “Project 406 is designed for an experienced owner who is passionate about fishing. She is a unique vessel in so many respects. Vripack Yacht Design is responsible for the exterior and interior design and naval architecture of this highly prestigious project. Her design is extremely distinctive, with a long bow and high bulwarks sweeping through a clear sheer to a low and uncluttered cockpit aft.”

“The high tower offers outstanding views with a downward angle on the water for specialized fishing. Apart from its practical function, the tower also offers a superb viewing platform for guests, who can follow all the action below. Project 406 effortlessly blends the ultimate sports fishing experience with genuine superyacht scale, comfort and refinement.”

Royal Huisman says a team of more that 350 craftspeople worked on the build over the last three years.

At its 171-foot length overall, Project 406 now tops several other giant custom sport-fishers such as the 144-foot Trinity Bad Company , 130-foot McMullen & Wing Mea Culpa and the 129-foot Yachting Developments Lanakai , by a significant margin.

When the build was first announced in 2021, Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman called Project 406 “the world’s first true sport-fish superyacht,” while Vripack co-creative director Bart M. Bouwhuis says it’s “a sport-fisher on steroids.”

Royal Huisman Announces Noir, Project 411: The World’s Tallest Sloop

Royal Huisman has broken new ground with the introduction of Project 411, an 81-meter (264-foot) custom superyacht named Noir. Set to have the tallest sloop rig in the world at 93 meters (305 feet), Noir is designed by Malcolm McKeon , featuring functional and luxurious elements tailored for an experienced yacht owner who is passionate about sailing and exploration.

The yacht is designed to optimize the cruising experience, featuring a sleek reverse bow to maximize waterline length and a flying bridge that extends outdoor living spaces. Noir is crafted to deliver not just performance but also comfort, equipped to carry a 14-meter (45-foot) tender that allows for exploring coasts and transporting guests without moving the yacht closer to shore.

Built in aluminum, Noir will feature auxiliary power supplied by electric drives. The mast, boom, and integrated sailing system are provided by Rondal, specialists in marine engineering. In line with its name, Noir will have black deck gear and windows.

“ We are very pleased to be building again at Royal Huisman , ” said Malcolm McKeon. “ Having built our award-winning 59.7-metre / 196-foot Sarissa there, we are well acquainted with the shipyard’s engineering skills, innovations, and the level of craftsmanship. “

Upon completion, Noir will not only be among the world’s top 10 largest sailing yachts but will also feature the world’s tallest sloop rig, exceeding the current tallest by about 4 meters (14 feet).

Details of the yacht’s interior, currently being developed by GCA Architects of Barcelona, remain confidential. GCA Architects are known for their contemporary approach and have been involved in significant projects, including Spain’s first “smart” building and the world’s first platinum-certified LEED structure. Designer Josep Juanpere Miret commented, “ The interior will complement the contemporary exterior styling and mix woods and other natural materials and textures for a relaxed yet luxurious atmosphere. “

Jan Timmerman, CEO of Royal Huisman, reflected on the significance of this project during the company’s 140th year. “ The capabilities of Royal Huisman can be seen in various ways, with no doubt the most important proof point being that we are selected by knowledgeable owners as the builder for their incredible and unique yachts. I am pleased and humbled that we can highlight Royal Huisman’s 140th year of operation with the announcement of such a significant project, ” Timmerman said.

Royal Huisman Yachts for Sale

Royal Huisman epitomizes Dutch maritime craftsmanship with their custom luxury sailing and motor yachts. The shipyard was founded in 1884 by Jan Huisman and is still family-owned and operated. Early on, the yard built small wooden sailing and motor yachts, but in 1954 Royal Huisman switched its focus to steel, and aluminum yachts. With a focus on successful racing sailing yacht production and the custom superyacht market, Royal Huisman found a winning formula. Upon the shipyard’s 100th anniversary in 1984, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands gave Huisman the title “Royal”, and the firm was renamed, Royal Huisman. At this point, the yard was already established in the international racing circuit, building several honor-winning performance yachts such as SAUDADE, FLYER, and FLYER II. The yard builds and refits custom luxury sailing yachts and motor yachts at its shipyard in Vollenhove, Netherlands. Here they have Huisfit, which is the shipyard’s in-house refit and repair division that not only refits Huisman builds but also does builds such as Heesen, Lürssen, and Claasen.

NOTABLE ROYAL HUISMAN BUILDS

The largest Royal Huisman to date is the 266’ sailing yacht SEA EAGLE II. She is the world’s largest aluminum sailing yacht and is currently in the top 10 ranking of the world’s largest sailing yachts. Another notable build is the 260’ sailing yacht ATHENA, which was built in 2004. This triple-masted schooner was built by Jim Clarke, who at the time had a 155’ Huisman being built and decided that he wanted a larger Huisman as well. ATHENA can accommodate 12 guests and has many amenities that other sailing yachts did not at the time. This was a massive feat for the Royal Huisman and established the yard as a megayacht builder.

ROYAL HUISMAN TODAY

Today, Royal Huisman is working on Project 410, a massive 280’ megayacht that will be the world’s largest sloop, and Royal Huisman’s largest build. She will include a massive carbon mast, and a boom and integrated sailing system, which will be designed and produced by Royal Huisman’s sister company, Rondal. Project 410 will be a true sailor’s yacht, which will be ready to sail quickly and capable of sailing fast, in comfort, to make the most of that long waterline. She will be exciting to sail, even in light airs, with an impressive ability to build and increase apparent wind speed.  All in all, Project 410 will be a megayacht equipped to explore the world in a grand fashion. The project is also an eco-friendly one, with recyclability and green energy top of mind when building this yacht.

Another major focus is the Huisfit division, which is a dedicated division for refit, rebuild, and renewal. Huisfit offers an extensive range of benefits and services to all superyachts builds in the global fleet, which includes everything from classification-driven refit and maintenance work to the re-arrangement and refurbishment of interiors. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Pieter Beeldsnijder Design and she was last refitted in 2021.

Juliet is built with a aluminium hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks. Powered by 1 x diesel MTU (12V183TE92) 839hp engines, she comfortably cruises at 10 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 19 knots. Her water tanks store around 11,000 Litres of fresh water. She was built to Lloyds Register classification society rules.

SUPERSIZED SAILING YACHTS BY ROYAL HUISMAN

Two of the world’s ten largest sailing yachts, ATHENA and SEA EAGLE, are Royal Huisman builds. Currently “under construction”,  Project 410 and Project 411 will join the top 10 upon delivery. And a number of breathtaking concept designs such as the world’s largest sloop APEX 850 and the dyna-rig LOTUS are also eager to contribute to this list. Designed by internationally renowned architects and the shipyard team, these concepts are unique examples of what can be realized.  Royal Huisman is at home with any style and any design: classic, contemporary, timeless schemes, combined with dyna-rigs, single mast, wing sails, a three-masted arrangement – created by your designer of preference: start dreaming, because we love to build it…

The next Royal Huisman supersized sailingyacht will be a fitting match in the world’s top 10; possibly even becoming the largest in this elite circle. She will join the existing Royal Huisman-built, thoroughbred “supersized sailboats”, and, as every Royal Huisman yacht benefits from knowledge gained during previous builds, she would be the finest yet.

In general, the comfort of motoryachts is mostly enjoyed by their owners while on “location A” or “location B”, such as a pretty marina or idyllic anchorage. Sailing yachts provide the same enjoyment, but are also much (more) fun while travelling from “A” to “B” or even reach remote corners of our beautiful planet.

They offer the stimulating experience of seeing the sails hoisted and catching the wind, and the slender bow cutting through the waves to pick up speed. Even those who are not keen on heeling angles, will be pleased to discover that new technologies exist to reduce lateral movement and heeling angle substantially.

In addition to the thrill of sailing and the satisfaction of Royal Huisman’s bespoke quality, future owners will also enjoy the “green footprint” of their yacht and the significant efficiency advantage of free propulsion power (the wind!).

Last but not least, “energy-neutral”-mode will prove a much-appreciated feature: spinning the propellers to generate more than sufficient electrical power for all board systems such as air conditioning, and for re-charging the batteries to enjoy “silent mode” while at anchor.

For some, these features might sound like uncharted waters that require a lot more development, but not so for the shipyard. Royal Huisman pioneered hybrid propulsion with the game-changing ketch ETHEREAL (the world’s first hybrid superyacht) in 2009, and has since continued to refine its technological lead in some remarkable projects.

Yacht owners and the yachting sector obviously want to play their part by reducing environmental impact and by limiting the use of valuable natural resources. It is a fact that the level of achievement resulting from these efforts can vary greatly. At Royal Huisman, we know that some owners positively encourage their design and build teams to make a difference by, for example, making their superyachts more efficient, or by applying renewable energy sources.

Propulsion by wind will always beat energy consumption onboard motoryachts, even when great reductions in fuel consumption and other efficiency gains are achieved. In addition, wind energy is ‘free’ – of charge, of fumes, and of noise. And driving is great fun, too…!
