MED (92m) // DeBasto Designs

Luiz debasto created the 92m open motor yacht concept med with lateral naval architects, who is responsible for the engineering..

MED is a sophisticated 92-meter yacht with sleek lines that enable efficient cruising, a low gross tonnage, and a groundbreaking approach to life on board.

At the core of this concept lies the open main deck, aptly named Agora, after the public square and central hub of life in Ancient Greece. This yacht pays homage to the Mediterranean way of life and those who embrace a free-spirited mindset. One of the Mediterranean civilization’s most valuable contributions to the modern world is the philosophy of outdoor living and dining, which enhances overall well-being. The MED concept strives to provide unforgettable experiences and limitless adaptability.

De Basto envisioned the main deck as a communal space that embraces the fresh air, creating an inviting environment for individuals to gather, interact with one another, and immerse themselves in the surrounding natural beauty. Although the exact mechanisms behind this phenomenon remain unclear, it has been scientifically proven that exposure to the sea and its salted air benefits human beings.

92m Motor Yacht MED Luiz DeBasto Designs

De Basto’s vision for the Agora is an adaptable and versatile space that can transform according to the time of day and activities taking place. While specific structures serve as visual anchors, most of the area is open to interpretation, allowing for customization for various occasions. This approach ensures that the design remains relevant and adaptable, evolving alongside the yacht.

The Agora concept extends beyond the main deck, with two decks of private spaces below and two public areas above, all with an open layout configuration. The upper decks feature minimal visible openings to contrast with the openness of the main deck while still providing stunning views. The yacht’s tender garages, wing stations, and mooring deck are seamlessly integrated into the design.

The superstructure is constructed entirely of reflective glass, polished to resemble the pebble stone that inspired it, allowing it to reflect its surroundings. The hull’s openings and windows are covered in serigraphy that matches the hull color, making them virtually invisible from the outside.

92m Motor Yacht MED Luiz DeBasto Designs

Irrespective of the ultimate appearance, it is feasible to construct the MED concept. The proficient team at Lateral Naval Architects has meticulously developed the engineering aspect, formulating a structural lattice mechanism that allows the superstructure to possess a minimal footprint and be supported solely by four pillars. This aesthetically pleasing resolution is unprecedented in the realm of yachting.

92m Motor Yacht MED Luiz DeBasto Designs

“I wanted to strip the profile of everything superfluous, leaving just the right number of elements to convey the concept,” Luiz de Basto says. “The flying superstructure volume touches the hull delicately, dissolving the Main Deck into a void space and leaving the Agora Deck open.”

“We designed this project for people who are curious about life, people who are courageous and want to build their own space. For them, we have re-thought what it means to live on board instead of designing another conventional yacht and making it work.”

Jorge Jabor Pinheiro has designed a 92m superyacht concept called Sahodara with a rotating owner’s deck. The concept incorporates the existing design format seen in land architecture such as a rotating restaurant like the Space Needle in Seattle, Washington, built for the 1962 World’s Fair.

Superyacht concept Sahodara

The 94m Superyacht concept Sahodara will enable 2 master cabins on the owner’s deck to receive the same forward facing panoramic views when rotated. The design concept has taken into consideration that not all yachts are owned by one person or couple. The Sahodara will enable two owners who have an equal stake in the use and ownership of the vessel to each have a private and custom designed suite at each end of the deck that can rotate and face forward for the best views while they are onboard.

“It is mainly a wish of the two owner’s that each room is capable of having a forward view of the ocean while on board,” explains Pinheiro. “Besides, the rotation gives the whole yacht two different profiles, making it a very intriguing feature.”

The top deck would only turn in one direction to complete the 180-degree swivel and the operation could only be achieved when docked or travelling at low speeds. “I should probably add that it’s not a 360-degree rotation device, it only rotates to about 200-something degrees and back.” noted Pinheiro.

Motoryacht concept Sahodara

The exterior design of the yacht is asymmetric and was inspired by looking at layered architecture and topography models with the aim of creating a ripple-like effect when seen from a birds-eye view.

The 94m Superyacht concept Sahodara would have a steel hull and aluminium superstructure and would be able to accommodate 12 guests with a crew of 27.

Diesel-electric engines and azimuthing propulsion pods, would power the vessel, helping to reduce the amount of GHG emissions and maximise manoeuvrability. With two Rolls-Royce Mermaid engines it is thought that Sahodara may be able to attain a maximum speed of 20 knots and a cruising speed of 16 knots.

Feadship ushers in the fuel-cell era with the launch of 118.80-metre Project 821

When the drydock doors slid open on 4 May at Feadship's Amsterdam shipyard, the yachting world was forever changed. Say hello to Project 821 , the world's first hydrogen fuel-cell superyacht. Five years in the making, innovation-packed Feadship Project 821 is the answer to a fundamental question: "How far can we push green technology on superyachts?"

Designed by RWD and with owners representation by Edmiston, Feadship's bold response was a multi-faceted, zero-diesel approach designed to cruise between harbours or anchorages and to operate the yacht's hotel load and amenities with emission-free power from green hydrogen. "The aim has been to develop a new, clean technology not just for this project, but for the world," said Jan-Bart Verkuyl, Feadship Director / CEO Royal Van Lent Shipyard. The size of the proposed yacht – 100-metres-plus – made it a good candidate to explore pure green hydrogen as the fuel-cell source. For those captivated by cutting-edge innovations, this yacht presents an opportunity for potential acquisition as it showcases the pinnacle of modern technological advancements.

Feadship's R&D team has been researching hydrogen, among other fossil-free fuel options, as part of the company's pledge to develop "net zero" yachts by 2030. Hydrogen fuel cells, a combustion-free way to generate electricity, have pure water as their only exhaust. Although there are hydrogen fuel cell-powered cars and fuel cells have been used as the primary source of electrical power on human spaceflight for more than six decades, nothing existed in the maritime sector. There were no regulations for hydrogen storage and fuel-cell systems at class, flag-state or even IMO level. Seeking expert partners from allied industries, Feadship, Edmiston and Lloyd's Register developed appropriately scaled equipment, protocols and safety regulations simultaneously.

"The value of the research as well the development of class and flag safety regulations for an entirely new type of energy generation is an advancement we are proud to have made available to all," Verkuyl said. Next year, for example, two long-route Norwegian passenger and car ferries will enter into service utilising the system pioneered with PowerCell Group for Project 821 .

From the beginning, one of the biggest hurdles would be developing a reasonable way to store compressed liquid hydrogen below deck at -253°C aboard a luxury yacht. But investing in the required technology is necessary to make the transition away from fossil fuel, and hydrogen is one of the most efficient and cleanest options. When hydrogen is processed in a fuel cell, the only by-products are electricity and water in the form of steam.

Hydrogen is light – one cubic metre of liquid hydrogen weighs 70kg vs. some 800kg per cubic metre of non-fossil diesel equivalent fuel (HVO or e-diesel). However, safely storing it on a vessel requires a double-walled cryogenic storage tank (a large very well-insulated cooling box in a dedicated room. Together, it takes eight to ten times more space to store hydrogen than the energy equivalent in diesel fuel.

In total, the cryogenic fuel tank that holds 92 m 2 (some 4 tonnes) of hydrogen on Project 821 , the sixteen compact fuel cells, their switchboard connection to the DC electrical grid, and the vent stacks for the escaping water vapour added four metres to the yacht's original specification length. Importantly, the fuel cells developed for Project 821 can also use easier-to-store methanol, a liquid fuel in ambient conditions. Steam reforms methanol into hydrogen before the electrochemical reaction in the fuel cell.

Even a yacht the size of Project 821 cannot carry enough liquid hydrogen to power a crossing, but Feadship could impact a yacht's carbon footprint where it is largest — generating electricity to serve the hotel load. According to the Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI), 70-78 per cent of a yacht's total energy use per year is to supply its hotel load, with heating and air conditioning making the largest demands. Supplying that electrical power via non-polluting hydrogen fuel cells has a swift and significant impact. For longer travels or when pure hydrogen is not available, the electricity powering the 3,200 kW ABB pod drives comes from MTU generators combusting HVO, a second-generation biofuel that reduces harmful emissions by 90 per cent. The validity of powering the yacht's generators with HVO was tested and proven on the 2023 Feadship, Obsidian .

While large battery banks are becoming an accepted way to provide enough power to operate generator-free for silent nights at anchor or to cruise sensitive no-discharge marine preserve zones, Project 821 stores a mere 543 kW hours of energy – compare that to Feadship's first diesel-electric hybrid, the 83.50-metre Savannah launched in 2015, which stored a megawatt of electrical energy. Project 821 doesn't need to, her fuel cell technology can provide an entire week's worth of silent operation at anchor or navigating emission-free at 10 knots while leaving harbours or cruising in protected marine zones.

Project 821 also features the most efficient waste heat recovery system yet developed, a system heating everything from the pool, Jacuzzi and steam room to the ambient air temperature and towel bars and floors in the guest bathrooms. Further savings in the hotel load will come from a Smart AC system linking sensors to an energy management system that automatically reduces air conditioning or heating in unoccupied guest spaces.

But Project 821 has more than one superlative, she's also the largest motor yacht ever launched in The Netherlands, just edging out the recently delivered 118.00-metre LAUNCHPAD for flagship status. Despite the fact the two yachts have nearly identical LOAs, Project 821 has 30 per cent more volume. With five decks above the waterline and two below and even with her sleek mast yet to be attached, her height is commanding – the owners' deck, for example, is 37 metres above water – yet the profile drawn by RWD is flowing and modern. She also has the most hull openings of any Feadship to date including fourteen balconies that slide out from the 'tweendeck space, five massive shell doors, and seven large opening platforms, all of which create an impressive connection to the sea. The balconies are unnoticeable when closed but slide out at the touch of a button, carrying with them their side railings or walls. When fully deployed, their floors rise to become perfectly level with the interior room.

Project 821 is designed for family use. The full owners' deck above the bridge is essentially an apartment with two bedrooms, twin bathrooms and dressing rooms, a gym, a pantry, two offices each with a fireplace, and a living room. A full walkaround deck, with shaded areas FWD & AFT, there are beautiful locations to ensure time onboard dining and relaxing in the FWD jacuzzi.

The hefty 19-metre beam allows wide corridors inside and gracious sidedecks outside where guests can easily walk side-by-side.

However, the owner accommodation extends beyond a single deck. A unique and completely private vertical corridor extends to the lower deck. This includes both a spacious staircase lined with bookshelves and display nooks and an owners' elevator. At each deck level, there are inviting private lifestyle destinations to savour such as a coffee corner and games niche on the bridge deck, a library on the main deck, and a private dining room with a sea terrace and adjacent ensuite stateroom on the lower deck. It creates, in essence, a secluded four-level townhouse-by-the sea within the much larger yacht.

British RWD Studio created Project 821 's exterior, GA and interior décor. The designers used a pallet of light neutral colours in textured fabrics and leathers, marble, rattan, fumed and taupe eucalyptus, and limed oak to create a luxe coastal vibe. For overall cohesiveness, details such as door trim features and hallway railings repeat their shapes from deck to deck but the materials change.

Jan-Bart Verkuyl says fuel cells will play an important role for yachts in the years to come considering their superior efficiency, low particle emissions and low noise radiation. "We have now shown that cryogenic storage of liquified hydrogen in the interior of a superyacht is a viable solution. Future innovations on fuel cells and onboard reforming of methanol to hydrogen are on the near horizon. For Feadship, the bottom line is that the decarbonization of Feadship's upstream process such as our extensive use of aluminium produced in a more environmentally sensitive way and the production of net-zero carbon-free fuels or hydrogen carriers deserves utmost priority."

Jamie Edmiston (Chief Executive) also shares his experience with this project. "The brief was to build the greenest and most environmentally advanced yacht ever built, without compromise. It was a huge challenge, but one that the team has embraced and delivered on. The yacht we see today, designed by RWD and built by Feadship is without doubt the best yacht ever built. I am proud to have been involved since the inception of this idea.”

Charlie Baker (Director) adds “RWD are immensely proud to have been involved in such a forward thinking project, as a collaboration alongside Feadship and Edmiston. We hope it inspires other projects to think differently in the future”.

Project 821 is being offered for sale by Edmiston.

The superyachts owned by tech moguls

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is set to join the exclusive club of yacht-owning tech tycoons as the rumoured owner of Oceanco's mighty 127m sailing yacht . Though it should come as no surprise - other big names in tech such as the late Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison and Paul Allen have been responsible for some of the biggest and most ground-breaking superyachts in the world...

The 127-metre Oceanco sailing yacht Koru, formerly Y721, was launched and reportedly delivered to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in April 2023. This three-masted schooner, meaning “new beginnings” in Maori, with an expected 33000 GT and a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, is the largest in the world and the longest built in the Netherlands at Oceanco. Knocking Lürssen's Eos , owned by Biller and Diane von Furstenburg, off the top spot, Koru harnesses design similarities with her black hull, white superstructure and classic lines. However, the intricate gold paintwork, scarlet bootstrap and elaborate figurehead on the bow particularly set her apart.

Larry Ellison

American business magnate Larry Ellison is the co-founder of the billion-dollar computer tech corporation Oracle. In 2004, he commissioned the 138-metre Lürssen superyacht Rising Sun (pictured), which stands today as the 15th largest yacht in the world. It was also the last yacht that ever came from the drawing boards of legendary designed Jon Bannenberg, sporting a military-esque profile with a lean destroyer-type hull and extensive use of structural glass . Rising Sun boasts 8,000m² of living space including a wine cellar and basketball court, with a crew of 45. One of her tenders, a catamaran, even carries the yacht’s 4x4 vehicle ashore.

Ellison later sold the yacht to media mogul David Geffen and has since hosted a parade of Hollywood's glitterati on board including Leonardo DiCaprio, Steven Spielberg, Bruce Springsteen and Oprah Winfrey – to name a few.

In 2011, Ellison appeared to downsize and took delivery of the 88-metre Feadship Musashi . Not unlike Rising Sun in its appearance, structural glass features heavily throughout with a central glass lift, surrounded by a stainless steel and glass staircase that passes through every deck.

More about this yacht

The late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen is responsible for two of the most iconic superyachts in the world. At 126-metres in length, Octopus is perhaps his most famous. Built by Lürssen in 2003, this ice-classed superyacht was designed for extended cruising to the most remote locations on earth with a range of 12,500 nautical miles. Home to a helicopter garage, drive-in tender garage, six tenders, and a submarine, she packs a serious punch within her 9,932GT – not to mention the cinema, swimming pool, recording studio, basketball court and spa. At the end of 2019, she joined the market for the very first time , having completed an eight-month refit at Blohm+Voss, and remains the benchmark for exploration yachting.

Tatoosh is another honourable mention and was built by German shipyard Nobiskrug in 2000, three years prior to the delivery of Octopus . At 92-metres, she's smaller than her successor, but to describe Tatoosh as "small" would be a severe understatement. Highlights include a six-foot-deep swimming pool, a pair of helipads, a crew of 30, and a custom 12-metre Hinckley powerboat that she carries on her top deck. Tatoosh is also listed for sale following a refit earlier this year.

Yachts for charter

The 78-metre Feadship Venus was built for the late Apple boss and founder Steve Jobs. Built under the codename Project Aqua, Venus was launched to international fanfare in 2012, heralded for its extensive use of glass and pared-back design courtesy of Philippe Starck . Innovative features include a false top deck that conceals the communication and television receivers from view and a passarelle that, when opened, looks like the charging port of an iPhone. Venus ’s interior details have been closely guarded since its launch. Sadly, Jobs died a year before the yacht was delivered.

Charles Simonyi

Charles Simonyi led the team that built the first edition of the Microsoft Office software suite and was rumoured to have previously owned Lürssen’s iconic 71-metre SKAT .  Nearly two decades after her launch in 2002, she joined the market for the first time and now Simonyi is thought to have upgraded to the 89-metre Lürssen Norn . Both yachts, penned by Espen Onion, share similar design features. Standout features include an alfresco cinema and adapted depth pool floor with dance floor. Norn was delivered in May 2023.

Sergey Brin

Google co-founder Sergey Brin reportedly owns the high-speed SilverYachts superyacht named Dragonfly , after Google’s once-secret project to launch a censored search engine in China. Delivered in 2009, the 73.3-metre Dragonfly was hailed as the fastest, most fuel-efficient long-range cruising superyacht on the water with a transatlantic range at 22 knots and a fuel consumption of only 360 litres per hour at 18 knots, extending her range to 4,500 nautical miles. Dragonfly is said to have a dance floor and open-air movie theatre on board. The vessel was applauded for its contribution to the disaster relief effort in Vanuatu after Hurricane Pam devastated the island in 2015. The crew reportedly moved 62 metric tons of freshwater ashore, treated over 250 patients, facilitated three medical evacuations, and built shelters in multiple villages and cleared numerous helicopter landing zones for ongoing support.

Google’s billionaire co-founder Larry Page purchased the 60-metre explorer yacht conversion Senses from a New Zealand businessman Sir Douglas Myers back in 2011. The globe-trotting superyacht features interiors by Philippe Starck and can accommodate a total of 12 guests on board, with primary guests reaping the benefits of the master suite's gyro-stabilised bed. Senses also houses an exceptional toy box with three high-speed tenders, six wave runners, a jet board and a JetLev. According to the New Zealand Herald, Senses is currently undergoing a refit in Whangārei, New Zealand, after being sold to an unknown buyer in 2020.

Barry Diller

The world’s largest three-masted schooner – also the third largest sailing yacht in the world – is owned by fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg and her husband Barry Diller, chairman and senior executive of IAC/InterActiveCorp and Expedia Group. The 92.92-metre sailing yacht, named Eos , was built in Germany by Lürssen and delivered in 2006 with a trio of masts that stand 61-metres tall. The sailing yacht has hosted the couple's star-studded group of friends including Andy Cohen, Gayle King, Bradley Cooper, Harry Styles and Karlie Kloss. The interiors were designed by Francois Catroux, who Vanity Fair named as “the super-rich's favourite interior designer" in 2016.

Mark Zuckerburg

The 107-metre Kleven superyacht Andromeda was built for serial superyacht owner Graeme Hart and delivered under the name Ulysses . In 2017, a year after its launch, rumours began circulating that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg had purchased the rugged, six-deck explorer (although a Facebook spokesperson was quick to stamp out the rumours and released a statement denying the claims). Andromeda can carry 36 guests and is equipped with an impressive inventory of toys and tenders, including six motorbikes, two ATVs, a helicopter and an amphibious rib. Five years after her launch, Andromeda still ranks among the largest explorer yachts in the world .

Eric Schmidt

The former Google ceo Eric Schmidt backed out of the purchase of the abandoned 81.3-metre Oceanco Alfa Nero but has been said to have moved onto become the new owner of a 95-metre Lürssen. Kismet was sold in September 2023 to the billionaire as part of one of the biggest brokerage deal of the year. With the details shrouded in secrecy the yacht is now aptly known as Whisper . Espen Onio was responsible for her iconic exterior while inside was thanks to  Reymond Langton , achieving the original brief from the previous commissioning owner Shahid Khan of “caviar and champagne.” Standout details include the hi-tech, art deco saloon, a private observation platform and the Persian-inspired spa area.

The co-founder and former ceo of WhatsApp, Jan Koum, has been rumoured to own the 99.9-metre Feadship , Moonrise. The yacht’s clean and strong lines, penned by Chris Bottoms from Studio de Voogt , won the highly competitive class of best displacement motor yachts above 3,000 GT in the World Superyacht Awards 2021. Features include the helicopter landing deck and modern interiors by Remi Tessier . Accommodation is for up to 16 guests, and there are 32 crew members onboard Moonrise to attend to the guests' every need. The Ukrainian-American mogul is also said to own the accompanying support vessel Nebula.

Evan Speigel

The Silicone Valley ceo, Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel has been reportedly said to own the 94.8-metre Feadship Bliss. Delivered in 2021 the motor yacht penned by Feadship's Studio De Voogt Naval Architects has most recently been spotted cruising Auckland in September 2023. Spiegel is rumoured to be Feadship's younger client. Bliss can accommodate up to 18 guests across nine staterooms; however little else is known about the 2983 GT yacht.
