Top 15 Trawlers for 2023

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • October 13, 2023

For every shoe, there’s a foot, and for every boating enthusiast, there’s a yacht. For those individuals who like to cruise their yachts across blue water, spend months on board or voyage to remote beaches and quiet coves, a trawler yacht is the go-to vessel choice. But even within this yacht genre, there are many options. For example, there are some mighty midsize trawlers that are easily capable of transatlantic crossings for an adventurous couple, and then there are megayacht-size craft with next-level amenities that require extra crew. Some trawler-yacht builders offer significant customization and others work from a fixed options list. There are single-engine trawlers and twin-engine trawlers. One thing that is common is that these trawler yachts are designed from the ground up for yachtsmen with wanderlust in their hearts.

Top Trawlers

The following 15 trawlers are all vessels we’ve written about. They are listed in no particular order.

  • Nordhavn 96 : Built for an owner who desired to self-sufficiently while cruising the world, literally.
  • Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 : This trawler can travel nonstop for 1,000 nautical miles.
  • Kadey-Krogen 52 : This twin-engine-capable, all-oceans trawler is a solid fit for voyaging cruising couples.
  • Bering Yachts B76 : The B76 is the builder’s first fully custom trawler in this size range.
  • Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge : This vessel is equally comfortable at a 7-knot stroll or an 18-knot jog.
  • Beneteau 48 Swift Trawler : Based on the builder’s Swift Trawler 47, this yacht has a resin-infused fiberglass hull.
  • Kadey-Krogen 50 Open : The 50 Open can cruise at 6 knots nonstop for 5,000 nautical miles.
  • Outer Reef 620 Trident : It has a three-stateroom layout and optional 600 hp Cummins diesels.
  • Grand Banks 60 Skylounge : This yacht is efficient across a variety of cruising speeds.
  • Krogen Express 52 : Headroom to spare, two staterooms, a chef-ready galley and long range define this trawler yacht.
  • Grand Banks 85 Skylounge : Grand Banks’ V-warp hull form makes for a level running attitude, seakindliness and long range.
  • Vicem Yachts 82 Classic : Construction is in cold-molded, strip-planked mahogany with epoxy.
  • Outer Reef 610 Motoryacht : Power on this Outer Reef is a pair of 500 hp John Deere 6090 diesels.
  • Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot : Did someone say this is a 20-knot Nordhavn?
  • Marlow 58E : A high level of customization and admirable performance are at the heart of the Marlow 58E.

Nordhavn 96

The Nordhavn 96 is the yacht builder’s second-largest yacht its 17-model fleet, which ranges from 41 to 120 feet length overall. (There is a new 112 on the drawing table.) The builder says the N96 is based on its earlier 86-footer with a 10-foot cockpit extension, which increases both main-deck, skylounge and below-deck volume. The N96 we reviewed was built by an owner who previously had an 86-foot Nordhavn, but with his plans for extended cruises to remote destinations, the 96 was the right size for his voyaging plans. In fact, since the owner took delivery of the boat, it has been on a continuous circumnavigation.

Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Beneteau’s Grand Trawler 62 has 1,000-plus-mile range and 20-knot speed with twin 730 hp i6 MAN diesels . The Grand Trawler 62 is the builder’s flagship in its Trawler series, which also includes the Swift Trawler 35 , Swift Trawler 41 Sedan ,  Swift Trawler 41 Fly and Swift Trawler 48 . Small touches set the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 apart. They include sea rails on all lockers to keep stowed food and gear in place, leather-wrapped interior handrails for security in a seaway, and leather drawer pulls like those found on larger yachts. Long-range cruising accommodations include a full-beam master stateroom aft, a forepeak VIP and twin-berth guest stateroom. A Quick X3 gyrostabilizer helps mitigate any potential rocking and rolling on rough days.

Kadey-Krogen 52

The Kadey-Krogen 52 is the trawler-yacht builder’s smallest offering in its raised-pilothouse series, complete with a Portuguese Bridge. Owners can choose from either a two- or three-stateroom layout, and between a single-diesel engine or twin-diesel engines, for owners seeking redundancy. The standard engine is a 231 hp John Deere diesel. With the single-engine setup, draft is 5’5” and with twins it’s a shallower 4’6”. At 6 knots, range is an ocean-crossing 4,850 nautical miles. At 7 knots, it’s 3,300 nm. At 9 knots, it 1,700 nm. The builder states, “The entire Krogen 52 is built from only three molded pieces for maximized structural integrity. There are no additional secondary bonds or caulk joints that can inevitably cause issues. All deck and superstructures are cored and vacuum-bagged to maximize strength while minimizing weight.” Additionally, six longitudinal stringers enhance overall strength.

The yacht is notable for its steel hull and aluminum superstructure, and for its 4,000-nautical-mile-plus range with its twin 404 hp Cummins QSL9 diesel engines. As rugged as the Bering 76 is built on the outside, it also offers homelike comforts in its skylounge inside, offering panoramic views out large windows surrounding the space. Sole-to-ceiling glass offers similar views in the open-plan salon. Accommodations are fox six guests in three staterooms with a master stateroom and two guest staterooms, plus crew accommodations. Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge

The Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge is a long-distance cruiser with creature comforts. Our expert found the R-43 Command Bridge to be a solid candidate to cruise The Great Loop . We agree. Twin Volvo Penta IPS450 pod drives give the boat efficient low and high cruise speeds at 7 and 18 knots, respectively. For those that have work during their cruise, the R-43 Command bridge’s master stateroom is set up with an office with a desk. Long trips require extra stowage and a way to clean salty clothes, so on the R-43 Command Bridge there is a washer, dryer, auxiliary refrigerator/freezer and stowage under the dinette, which rises on electric rams. Voyagers who buy a R-43 Commander Bridge can opt for a Factory Delivery Experience, which is three days of instruction on Puget Sound, and includes in boat systems, handling and maintenance.

Beneteau Swift Trawler 48

The Beneteau Swift Trawler 48 has a 1,300-nautical-mile range at 8 knots, but can also speed away at 26 knots if the weather goes south in a hurry. Based on the builder’s 47-footer , the three-stateroom, two-head Swift Trawler 48 has a resin-infused fiberglass hull. Power is a pair of 425 hp Cummins diesels. The main-deck layout includes a galley aft setup, which is accessible to the cockpit. There, the seating and dining area can be fully enclosed, with tracks in place for side curtains. The helmsman is kept comfortable on long passages with a bolstered, pedestal bucket-style seat with a flip-up footrest. The Swift Trawler 48 we reviewed had upgraded 12-inch Raymarine HybridTouch displays (9-inch screens are standard).

Kadey-Krogen 50 Open

Designed for serious extended cruising,  Kadey-Krogen Yachts 50 Open provides owners with amenities that will enhance those longer passages. The galley is fitted with a Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer, a four-burner Wolf range, a microwave and an optional dishwasher. Unlike in many trawlers and their traditional pilothouse design, the galley is located on the same level as the helm and salon. Belowdecks is the master stateroom amidships with two hanging lockers, 12 cabinets, additional drawers for stowage and an en suite head, shower and two sinks. Forward of the master is an office. The 50 Open’s hull has soft chines and a curved after end, much like the characteristics of a sailboat built for cruising. The result is an efficient hull form that provides a gentle landing into troughs when the sea gets a temper. This trawler can cruise at 6 knots for 5,000 nautical miles; 7 knots for 3,000 nautical miles; 8 knots for 2,100 nautical miles; and 9 knots for 1,200 nautical miles.

Outer Reef 620 Trident

Outer Reef Yachts 620 Trident delivers a three-stateroom layout and optional 600 hp Cummins diesels that allow this vessel to approach a top hop of 21 knots. Cruising speed is a little over 16 knots, burning about 34 gallons of fuel per hour at 2,750 rpm. The amidships master stateroom has 6-foot-8-inch headroom, a walk-in closet and a shower enclosed in smoked glass. In the forepeak VIP stateroom, there are seven drawers, a hanging locker, a 31-inch Samsung TV and 7-foot headroom. The portside guest stateroom can convert to an office, too. The aft galley has a U-shape countertop, a three-burner electric cooktop, a Bosch microwave and a Vitrifrigo refrigerator and freezer. Cherry, walnut and oak are the available wood options.

Grand Banks 60 Skylounge

It’s obvious after a quick peek inside the Grand Banks 60 Skylounge that the  Grand Banks Yachts  trademark external DNA is retained. The deck, cabin house and skylounge are all composed of infused carbon fiber, reducing weight aloft and creating a lower center of gravity. With twin 900 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels , the 60 Skylounge can accelerate to 31 knots and cruise at about 25 knots. The 60 Skylounge can also travel up to 2,000 nautical miles at 10 knots on a 1,530-gallon fuel tank. Twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS1200s are also available.

Krogen Express 52

The Krogen Express 52 runs on twin 440 hp Yanmar diesels and can cruise at 8 knots for 1,680 nautical miles or at 16 knots for 500 nautical miles. Top hop:  22 knots. In the interior,  Krogen Express  has outfitted the 52 with a master stateroom and a guest stateroom. The former has a queen island berth, more than 7-foot headroom, hanging lockers and smaller cubbies to port and to starboard, and an en suite head with a molded fiberglass shower stall with a seat, a VacuFlush toilet and a granite countertop. A power lift elevates the berth and grants access to more stowage underneath. The Krogen Express 52’s salon has a 26-inch HD LED TV and a home-theater system, leather Stressless chairs to port and a built-in, L-shape settee to starboard. The galley boasts granite countertops, a three-burner Force 10 propane range with an oven, a refrigerator, a GE microwave oven, a deep Elkay sink and a pullout sprayer faucet. There is a Buff Ultraleather Stidd helm seat for extra comfort during long runs.

Grand Banks 85 Skylounge

The Grand Banks 85 Skylounge comes in at more than 87 feet length overall and displaces 108,000 pounds, with a 22-plus-foot beam and an air draft of just under 26 feet. Owners can choose either a three- or four-stateroom layout. The standard motors are twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS diesels, twin 1,300 hp MAN straight-shaft diesels are optional. With the larger engines, owners can also choose an optional stern thruster, in addition to the standard bow thruster. With the IPS diesels, top speed is 26.5 knots and fuel burn is 100 gallons per hour, resulting in a range of 699 nautical miles. At a 21-knot cruise speed, fuel consumption drops to 57 gph, and range climbs to 972 nm. At a 9-knot jog, fuel burn falls to 9 gph, and the Grand Banks 85 Skylounge can cruise nonstop for about 2,500 nautical miles.

Vicem 82 Classic Flybridge

The Vicem 82 Classic is a flybridge model built in cold-molded mahogany, which creates a stout hull form with reduced weight. The yacht is notable for its timeless Downeast lines and strong joiner work. For cruising enthusiasts, the Classic 82 Flybridge is powered with twin 900 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels . The yacht has a top-end speed of 17.8 knots, and the cruising speed is 15 knots. At 9 knots, and considering a 10-percent fuel reserve, range is reportedly 1,100 nautical miles.  Accommodations three en-suite-equipped staterooms. The master stateroom is full-beam and amidships with a king-size berth is on centerline. The starboard-side guest stateroom and a forepeak VIP each have queen-size berths.

Outer Reef 610 Motoryacht

Built for an enthusiastic cruising couple after a three-year boat search, the Outer Reef Yachts 610 Motoryacht (part of the builder’s Classic series ), was customized with a fore-and-aft berth in the owners’ stateroom (as in, not athwartships), and berths rather than bunks in the smaller of two guest staterooms. This Outer Reef 610 was designed to be used as a liveaboard vessel, so the salon is not set up for dining (there are tables in the pilothouse, on the aft deck and on the bridge). A pair of swivel chairs in the salon face the built-in couch and the pop-up TV to port. The 610 is built with hand-laid fiberglass, PVC coring above the waterline, resin infusion and a vinylester barrier coat against osmosis. Power is twin 500 hp John Deere 6090 diesels turning ZF transmissions . The 610 tops out at about 13.5 knots with full tanks and 21 people aboard. The engines burn 20 gph at 1,800 rpm for 11 knots at 45 percent engine load. Those numbers should allow it to cross oceans without shortening engine life.

Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot

Nordhavn has long been known for its stout circumnavigation -capable craft, and the Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot carries on the the tradition of a beefy build with addition of…speed. Twenty-knots-plus, actually. Twin 715 hp Cummins diesel inboards and a new semidisplacement hull form  are said to be key to the performance equation. The Nordhavn 59CP has a 777-nautical-mile range at a 9.3-knot cruise, and a 255-nm range at its 20.3-knot top-end. Construction is a solid fiberglass hull bottom supported by full-length longitudinal stringers and a series of transversal supports for added backbone. High freeboard should keep the decks dry in a seaway, while rails keep the crew secure during transits. Nordhavn says the 59CP has a “CE category A unlimited offshore rating, ensuring the vessel has the seakeeping and strength capabilities to take on most serious coastal cruises up to 1,000 miles.”

Marlow Yachts 58E

Following on the successful Marlow 57 , the Marlow 58E was started from scratch on a blank sheet of paper. The essence of the 58E is that it has better performance and more internal and external volume than her predecessor. The centerline length grew 10 inches over the 57, but the waterline length increased 16 inches and the beam widened 4 inches. If you were to examine the two boats out of the water, you would see more bell-shaped forward sections making for a soft impact with the vee’d portion. Power options start with twin 575 hp Caterpillar C9 diesels, but the 58E we got aboard had beefier twin 1,015 hp Caterpillar C18 diesels. Top speed: 27.9 knots. At 8 knots, the Marlow 58E can cruise nonstop for 1,400 nautical miles.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a trawler yacht?

A true trawler typically has a full-displacement hull form and robust construction to handle open-water operation, and it’s designed to operate self-sufficiently for long periods of time. They are slow-cruising vessels, but over the years, hybrid yachts called fast trawlers have emerged to offer displacement-speed operation as well as the ability to run at planing speeds when desired.

What is a full-displacement hull form?

A displacement-hull form is known is for its rounded nature and deep draft. Full-displacement vessels do not plane on the water, but rather push through the water. This hull design makes displacement-hull vessels incredibly seakindly, but it also makes them relatively slow (think 5, 6, 7, 8 knots) when compared to semidisplacement- and planning-hull designs.

Is a long-range cruiser the same as a trawler?

While all trawlers are certainly long-range cruisers, not all long-range cruisers are trawlers. True trawlers will have full-displacement hull designs and not all long-range cruisers have them.

Long range yacht

Interested in purchasing a Long Range Yacht? Send us a message below and we will help you with the process.

Long cruises through uncharted territory are this yacht type's specialty. A yacht built to this style is meant to tackle everything from the icy waters of the Arctic to the rough waves of the South Pacific in monsoon season. Sturdy and constructed with a reinforced steel hull in most designs, this style of yacht is perfect for a family of explorers looking for their next adventure.

The curved bottom displacement hull gives you sleeping and cooking areas that are as large as any you would find in your home. Long range cruisers don't need much engine power to get moving, so smaller motors and less fuel is required which can extend your sea faring trip.

Often called semi-displacement vessels, long range cruisers aren't known for their speed. Yet due to their hull design, they are known for being fuel efficient per nautical mile. Designed for longer trips, trawlers are the ultimate cruising vessel, whether you are out at the open sea or a lake.

February, 2018

Boating purists are quick to point out that a "real" trawler is built on a full displacement hull with only a single diesel engine for power. By that rigid standard, most of the boats we call trawlers these days fail to measure up. Nearly everyone thinks of the classic Grand Banks 42 as a trawler, but in fact Grand Banks models all ride on semi-displacement hulls, and they mostly came with twin engines. Same with most of the Taiwan-built trawlers that flooded the U.S. market in the 1970s and '80s, as well as all of the popular Mainship Trawlers that were so successful before the company cratered during the Great Recession. These boats are perhaps better described as "performance trawlers."

Profiled below are eight go-anywhere trawler yachts that have stood the test of time. And no, we didn’t forget the Nordhavn series of displacement trawlers—a Nordhavn-specific blog article can be found here .

DeFever 44 Offshore Cruiser

Hatteras 48 LRC

At a Glance:   A classic Hatteras yacht — one of only a handful of American-built trawler yachts.  Most 48s were delivered with two-stateroom teak interiors featuring a full-beam salon with L-shaped settee and coffee table to port, U-shaped galley (with breakfast bar) forward, and spiral companionway to starboard. The full-beam master stateroom of the Hatteras 48 is amidship with built-in dresser and private en-suite head with stall shower. Forward, the guest stateroom has V-berths, storage drawers, and private access to a head with shower. The pilothouse, four steps up from the salon, includes a U-shaped dinette, single watch berth, and port/starboard deck doors. Topside, the boat deck is designed to carry a dinghy and hoist. A cockpit transom door assists boarding. No lightweight, twin 112hp GM 4-53N diesels cruise the Hatteras 48 LRC at 8–9 knots. Over 40 were built.

Price Range: From the mid $100s to high $200s.

At a Glance:   Seaworthy, comfortable and economical — over 150 DeFever 44s were sold. Heavily constructed on a full displacement hull, the DeFever 44 is a rare flush deck design with the aft deck and side decks on the same level. The result boat with slightly higher freeboard, but with an enormous aft deck area perfect for entertaining. The DeFever 44’s roomy two-stateroom interior is arranged with the galley aft in the salon where it’s easily reached from the aft deck and flybridge.   Grab rails in the salon overhead are a nice touch, and large windows provide panoramic views of the water. Note the pass-thru window from the galley to the aft deck. The full-beam master stateroom is huge with tons of storage and space for a washer and dryer. A great feature is the walk-in engine room with workbench and near standing headroom. Twin 135hp Lehman diesels cruise at 7–8 knots with a range of 1,500 nautical miles.

Price Range: From $75–80K to the mid/high 200s.

Hatteras-48-LRC

Krogen 42 Trawler

Krogen 39 Trawler

At a Glance:   Replacement boat for the legendary Krogen 42 — seaworthy and comfortable, the single stateroom interior of the Krogen 39 is designed for the cruising couple. Entering the salon from the aft deck, a dinette is to port and an L-shaped settee with fold-out table is to starboard. The compact galley is located forward in the salon on the starboard side.  Four steps up from the salon/galley, the Krogen 39’s raised pilothouse offers commanding views of the water. Port and starboard Dutch doors provide quick deck access, and the settee behind the helm pulls out to form a watch berth. The stateroom and head are reached from the pilothouse—the head is on the starboard side, and the stateroom with island queen berth is forward. One of the great features of the Krogen 39 is her standup engine room. A single 121hp John Deere diesel will cruise at 7–8 knots with a range of 2,000+ miles.

Price Range: From  the mid $200s to the high $300s.

At a Glance:   An iconic Krogen design with a ballasted displacement hull and tremendous storage — a proven cruising or liveaboard yacht. The hull is solid fiberglass below the waterline and cored above. Until hull #65 (1985), they were built with glass-over-plywood decks; thereafter, they were built with a cored deck and superstructure. There are two versions, the Standard model with walkaround side decks, and Widebody model (introduced in 1989) with a full-width salon. Both versions were available with two lower-level accommodation plans. Double doors open from the aft deck to the salon where an L-shaped sofa and table are to starboard. The galley is forward, on the starboard side of the salon. The focal point of the Krogen 42 is the pilothouse with watch berth, overhead hatches, and port/starboard deck doors. A single 120hp Lehman diesel will cruise at 7–8 knots. A total of 206 were built.

Price Range: From about $100K to mid/high $200s.

Krogen-42-Trawler

Krogen 44 Trawler

Selene 53-54

At a Glance:   Heavily built passage maker for cruising in comfort and security — Selene sold a lot of these yachts. The interior is finished in satin varnished cherry wood with teak and holly flooring throughout. The focal point of this yacht is her well-appointed pilothouse — fronted by a Portuguese bridge—that towers high above the water. A U-shaped galley complete with full-size refrigerator is forward in the salon. Below, the living quarters consist of three staterooms and two full heads. The full-beam amidships master stateroom has direct access to the Selene’s standup engineroom (also reached via a spiral staircase opposite the galley). The forward VIP stateroom has an island queen berth, and the second guest stateroom to port has twin single berths. Teak is used on all exterior deck surfaces.  A single 430hp Cummins diesel—or twin 230hp Cummins diesels—cruise at 8–9 knots.

Price Range: From around $500K to over $1 million.

2001–Current

At a Glance:   Based on the original Krogen 42 — a serious long range yacht for the cruising couple. The added length of the 44 can be seen in her larger pilothouse and roomier aft deck. A not-so-obvious upgrade is that the pilothouse, flybridge and boat deck are a single mold instead of fastened together providing a much stronger structure. The interior of the 44 is similar to her predecessor. An L-shaped settee is to starboard in the salon, opposite two occasional chairs, and a U-shaped galley is forward, also to starboard. Accessed from companionway steps forward of the salon, the guest stateroom with convertible settee, desk, and book shelves doubles as a den/office. The single head is to port, and master stateroom with island queen berth is forward. Note the weathertight doors and windows. A Widebody version came out in 2006. A 158hp John Deere diesel will cruise at 8 knots with a range of 2,000-plus nautical miles.

Price Range: From about $600K to over $1 million.

2004–Current

Krogen-44-Trawler

Lord Nelson Victory Tug 37

At a Glance:   A quality-built displacement trawler perfect for cruising the world in comfort and safety. Several interiors are available in the Selene 47, all with the galley forward in the salon. Accessed from companionway steps forward in the salon, the two stateroom, two head layout includes twin single berths in the port guest stateroom and a walkaround queen berth in the forward master stateroom. The master stateroom head features a tub, and a washer/dryer unit is located at the foot of the companionway steps. Part of the guest cabin bulkhead folds away to create a large common area abaft the master stateroom. A large storage area is between the engine room and lazarette. In addition to great visibility, the pilothouse features a watch berth and inside access to the flybridge. A single 330hp Cummins diesel will cruise at 8 knots with a range of 2,000+ miles.

Price Range: From the mid $200s to mid/high $600s.

At a Glance:   Based on a traditional New England workboat hull — 76 of these popular boats were delivered. Her teak batten interior, functional pilothouse, large galley, and wide walkaround decks with substantial bulwarks will appeal to the discerning yachtsman. The salon and galley are three steps down from the pilothouse. The U-shaped galley has a serving counter, and the convertible salon settee has storage space below. A pantry door in the galley opens to the engine room. The salon sole is teak and holly, and the overhead is tongue and groove teak. Forward of the pilothouse, the stateroom features a double berth and head with stall shower. The original teak decks were ultimately eliminated in favor of fiberglass, and the teak handrails were replaced with stainless steel late in her production run. The Victory Tug 37 has a cruising range of 800–900 miles at 7 knots with a single 150hp Cummins diesel.

Price Range: From $75–80K to the mid $100s.

Description

With many different kinds of trawler yachts being built today, it's important to really understand the kind of long distance cruising that you plan to do. Cruising on your yacht for days, weeks, or even months on board can present a variety of challenges, but is one of the most rewarding and memorable experiences in boating. Owning a trawler with the ability to run long distances brings out your inner explorer, quenching your desire to discover places you've never seen while also feeding it. Whether you plan on cruising the Pacific Northwest, island hopping in the Caribbean, or taking on the Great Loop, before you make a selection on a trawler, it's best to discuss your plans with an experienced, knowledgeable broker that can walk you through the differences in some of the brands, styles, and capabilities.

SPEAK TO A SALES PROFESSIONAL

Finding yourself slowing things down in your world due to the crazy rush of information and speed all around us? Decided you’re ready for a boat, or have one but feel a shift in your style and aren’t ready to dig too deep into your pockets for one but would like a more economical choice to escape the frenzy in? Well, then fast your gaze upon what is known as a trawler - a perfect option for those seeking all of the above points just mentioned. Please meet the well-known boat type - a trawler - which is simply a price conscious motorboat with a full-displacement, ballasted hull that possesses just that perfect cruising range for those long-ocean passages you’ll be heading out on to decompress from the never ending present day chaos.

Below are some of the well-known trawler yacht brands in the industry :

  • American Tug
  • Fleming Cruising Yachts
  • Kadey-Krogen Yachts
  • Mainship Yachts
  • Marlow Yachts
  • Nordhavn Yachts
  • Outer Reef Yachts
  • Ranger Tug Boats

As Ferrari is to sexy race cars, trawlers are to functional ‘workboat-look’ recreational boats. Yes, ‘trawler’ is a classic, non-Euro ‘look’. This lends itself to a specific so called, ‘trawler lifestyle’ which translates to a sailor’s cruising lifestyle with the power of a motorboat. Those who appreciate their boat to have excellent sea keeping skills coupled with the range to take you to far - off hideaways, are in for a real treat when setting out on a trawler. Invite your family and friends as the trawler yachts offer long-term living accommodations - perfect for desiring an ‘at anchor’ remote boat getaway. These ‘small packages with a punch’ will carry, launch, and retrieve your tender too - thanks to her efficient crane.

Listing some of the trawlers other features, such as anchor accommodations, reverse windows, a pilot house, and walk around decks for line handling and docking, you’ll find this type of boat is well equipped for leisure and fun!

So get your calendar out and block off a stretch of time, as the trawler embraces trips like those!

Once a commercial fishing boat, the trawler has evolved to meet all boater requests of this present day resembling a comfortable home with the benefit of never having to jump in and out of your car as you’ll be motoring above sea level from one port to the next sipping on your favorite island cocktail and popping shrimp cocktails! You can choose from a more basic trawler or go all out with designing one that rivals a luxury yacht with all it’s out of this world comforts.

Don’t be surprised if that block of time turns into calling your realtor to put your house on the rental market as you’ve decided to set out aboard your sweet ride on the water for months on end or even decided to drop the home and move aboard! We don’t see why you couldn’t if your spirit has been calling you out to a sea salt life as there’ll be no compromise in comfort with the trawler’s private staterooms for nights dreaming above the ocean, full galleys to prepare scrumptious fresh-caught fish dinners, and roomy galleys to gather in and share island stories. Why should long-distance cruising be any less as it’s equally important getting to your dream destination. Slow and steady, you’ll be pleased to see the fuel bill is allowing you extra funds for elaborate dinners out or that new tender you’ve been eyeing.

If you’re more of a tropical breeze cruiser, then by all means, get her ready to cruise south for the winter to extend the warm months aboard. The journey up and back on the intracoastal waterway has been traveled by many with the same idea to keep that summer warmth going! You’ll appreciate how little fuel she’ll consume and that excellent range we continue to remind you of too. Built for voyages such as these, the builders have kept the size of the engine areas to a minimal and chose displacement hulls to aid in cutting through the seas instead of sucking up tons of power. Your search for a super trawler is doable as you’ll find many to be ocean-crossing water babies. If you want the speedier versions, there are a few builders who can accommodate you in making that dream come true on your trawler too. And don’t be fearful you’ll have to give up the low fuel bills, as even the fast trawlers typically offer superior fuel economy than many different powerboat styles.

What we find our clients greatly appreciate is the trawler’s expansive cabin space even on the smaller models and some can offer aft cabins in the rear and some manufacturers pulled all stops out and in their larger models have been known to add multiple deck levels to these ever evolving sweet ‘floating packages’.

We hope you’ve come to see that there are numerous reasons many of our clients love trawlers of all sizes because you don’t always need a yacht-sized vessel to make your dreams of venturing to remote ports in comfort and efficiency a reality without exhausting the retirement savings account.

The displacement version has a range of more than 1,000nm at 10 knots

The hydraulic platform has a 1,000kg lifting capacity

Foredeck lounge feels very safe and sheltered thanks to those tall bulwarks

  • Aft cockpit is shaded by flybridge overhang

The vast 550ft² flybridge is open at the aft end but covered by a sturdy hard top further forward

  • The aft end of the flybridge is open to owner interpretation
  • Flybridge helm is a great spot to drive from in fine weather
  • Chunky mullions reinforce the rugged explorer-style look

Fabulous views from the main deck saloon

  • The dining table bench has no backrest so as not to disrupt the views

The black-and-white themed galley has a clean, functional look

The full beam owner’s cabin is amidships

  • The owner’s ensuite to starboard

The forward VIP cabin makes full use of the bow’s unusually wide beam

The Numarine 22XP aims to emulate the success of her bigger sister the Numarine 26XP. We find out how on a full sea trial…

Numarine is an excellent example of how not to let the past define your future. The Turkish-based company, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, started out building mainstream planing motoryachts and over the course of its first 15 years in business it built a good many of them, around 135 in total between 52-105ft.

However, six or seven years ago its founder, owner and CEO Omer Malaz, a highly experienced yachtsman himself and always one of his own best customers, sensed a mood change among his clients and in the wider world market.

Demand for slower, more efficient, high-volume explorer yachts appeared to be gathering pace and he wanted in, personally and professionally.

Scroll forward to today and Numarine’s portfolio comprises just four craft, all of them throughly modern trawler-explorers from 72-122ft.

The smaller two – the all-new Numarine 22XP featured here and the four-year-old Numarine 26XP – are both built out of GRP and certified Cat B and Cat A respectively.

The Horizon FD85 doesn’t just have superyacht-baiting deck spaces and interior volume on its side; it will tackle long-distance voyages

The larger two – the five-year-old Numarine 32XP and the new-last-year Numarine 37XP – have steel hulls and composite superstructures and are built to ‘Class’.

And in just five short years it has delivered no fewer than 27 of these high volume semi-custom superyachts to loyal owners all over the world – three 22XPs, 17 26XPs, four 32XPs and three 37XPs.

Moreover, as of this summer, the yard has another 18 of them on order with deliveries stretching into 2024.

Numarine 22XP design language

Since it started, Numarine has relied on the same principal creative partners – Umberto Tagliavini for naval architecture and Can Yalman for exterior and interiors – and together they have been responsible for every Numarine to date.

Most recently they have been working on two new additions to the range, a bigger composite model whose precise length remains confidential until an imminent autumn boat show reveal and a new steel/aluminium flagship Numarine 45XP.

Like her older and bigger 26XP sister, the Numarine 22XP is available as either a full-displacement craft or as a faster planing model. The two versions are essentially the same in most respects, save for the drivetrain and changes to the hull form.

numarine-22xp-review-MBY278.test_Numarine_22xp.Numarine_22_XP__0130_final

Above the waterline you can’t tell them apart. The main tooling is the same. The hulls are made from bonding the same two moulded halves together, but they have different keel sections. The displacement hull has a bow-bulb and a rounder keel.

The planing version uses a flatter central keel section and has separately moulded spray rails bonded to the exterior after demoulding.

In displacement guise the necessary grunt comes from a pair of 425hp Cummins diesels, which is good for a maximum speed of around 12.5 knots, but for planing performance those are swapped for twin 1,200hp V8 MANs that push the top end up to more like 25 knots.

numarine-22xp-review-MBY278.test_Numarine_22xp.Numarine_22_XP_4

In terms of style, the Numarine 22XP carries the same design cues as her bigger sisters – high bow, tall bulwarks that run virtually through to the stem, wide flush side-decks well protected by generous upper-deck overhangs, sturdy hardtop, near-square transom, and of course forward-raked bridge windows – de rigueur for any trawler-explorer.

The way the bulwarks are rebated to enhance views from the main saloon and the chunky cap-rails have been Numarine signatures for many years.

Spatial awareness

The 22XP’s outdoor spaces are substantial – 172ft² (16m²) of particularly comfortable and well-protected foredeck terrace, a 258ft² (24m²) cockpit and a whopping 550ft² (51m²) flybridge with partial hardtop protection.

numarine-22xp-review-MBY278.test_Numarine_22xp.Numarine_22_XP_9914_final

That fly is getting on for 55ft (17m) long if you include the massive sunbathing area above the pilothouse. The usual mix of wet-bar, dinette, sun-pads or lounger space is all open to owner preferences.

The standard offer 334ft² (31m²) main saloon has a comfortable lounge area aft that, with aft-deck doors open, merges with the cockpit’s freestanding furniture to provide the flexible AC or no AC choices during the heat of the day.

It has to be said the views are splendid from all those sofas, inside and outside, despite the high bulwarks which vary in height from 36-41in (0.91m-1.04m). There’s an open-plan dining area to starboard adjacent to an enclosed galley to port.

saloon

The latter aboard our test boat was perhaps too formal for mainstream tastes and made to look even more boxy given the rather severe black oak veneers that its interior majors on, but for other owners the galley can be open-plan and lighter veneers chosen.

Tucked up out of the way to port, the bridge is perhaps more geared to out-of-sight crew practicality too. The wheel and instruments are addressed by a high bench seat, which exaggerates the remoteness from the rest of the boat, although the view out is more than adequate to the sides and forward.

There’s a convenient side-deck door immediately to starboard of the bridge console that gives more direct access forward and delivers extra fresh air or perhaps a more discreet passage aft for crew. Plus there’s the option of a day-heads compartment by that door, although the boat we saw didn’t have one.

galley

Boutique service

Numarine projects itself as a boutique yard and, although still mindful of the efficiencies that come with series building as opposed to the less predictable semi-custom arena, it is always prepared to help owners get what they want in terms of furniture and décor, providing it doesn’t mean moving bulkheads or disrupting technical areas.

All the cabins aboard this model are on the lower deck and all have their own ensuite bathrooms and at least 6ft 9in (2.06m) of headroom throughout. There’s a full beam 215ft² (20m²) owner’s cabin aft and a 161ft² (15m²) VIP double cabin in the bow, which also enjoys its own private access via a staircase next to the helm.

owner's cabin

Amidships, between the two main cabins, you can either opt for another big full beam double that’s almost as large as the owner’s cabin but without the big hull windows, or a smaller 129ft² (12m²) double to starboard and a 108ft² (10m²) twin opposite to port.

The latter is quite compact, so some owners may be happy to specify that one as a single. Most owners are likely to go for this four-cabin version and of the handful of boats already sold none have opted for three cabins thus far. There’s also room for a crew cabin aft of the engine-room.

vip cabin

Accessed via a transom door and a four-step descent, it typically provides two beds and a mini-mess/utility space, but Numarine tells us a third bunk could be squeezed in there if needed.

The principal access to the engine-room is from that cabin and it has to be said the engine-room is splendid – everything accessible and plenty of headroom.

Given there’s no garage, tender stowage will be on the 108ft² (10m²) hydraulic platform, which has a quoted capacity of 1,000kg net. Potentially the tender has up to 20ft (6m) of beam to play with.

numarine-22xp-review-MBY278.test_Numarine_22xp.Numarine_22_XP_10

Driving the Numarine 22XP: Long-range efficiency

The first XP to deliver was a planing model and the next two were displacement versions. We got to test the third, which was fitted with the inline six-cylinder 425hp QSB6.7s Cummins blocks and, as previously mentioned, has a top speed of 12.5-knots.

However, despite being capable of a bit more, we would suggest there is little point ever straying north of 10 knots. Flat out those two engines will burn almost 81 litres of diesel per hour, but drop things down to 10 knots and that consumption more than halves to 39 litres per hour, and at eight knots it almost halves again to 21 litres per hour.

numarine-22xp-review-MBY278.test_Numarine_22xp.Numarine_22_XP_1

The Numarine 22XP features exterior styling by Can Yalman

The latter is the recommended all-day, every-day chug, at which the theoretical range is well over 2,200nm, although with generators running and allowing for a generous reserve up to 1,800nm between fill-ups would be the comfortable figure on which to base passage plans. There’s capacity for 6,000-litres of fuel aboard.

We got to drive this one in June off Tuzla in near-perfect conditions – warm sunshine, virtually no wind and little swell. Suffice to say we can’t vouch for big-seas handling nor indeed the efficiency of the twin electric CMC Stabilis fin-stabilisers, which help counteract roll at anchor as well as low speed cruising.

What we can say about the handling is that the electro-hydraulic steering is remarkably responsive. We didn’t get to see what’s beneath the waterline, but the twin rudders must be substantial to turn her quite so swiftly at such modest speeds.

First and foremost, XPs are good quality designs that offer great value for money, and the new Numarine 22XP makes the formula even more affordable. There’s lots more to Numarine’s XPs that you can’t see. For instance, all the moulding work comes from closed-mould techniques. Indeed, it has been resin-infusing its hulls since the early days and boasts some of the best resources in Turkey. Also the attention given to sound and vibration mitigation aboard is far from typical. For each new model it seeks the advice of Dutch consultancy firm Van Cappellen, whose client list includes many of the world’s very best superyacht builders. The Numarine 22XP is exceptionally quiet, even by trawler yacht standards. If you are considering a navetta/explorer-style craft, this boat is well worth putting on your must-see list.

“My Selene 80 Ocean Explorer ticks all the boxes! We like fishing offshore and Howard Chen has beautifully extended the cockpit, adding working space, waterline and speed to this powerful fishing machine. I am also delighted with the very professional layout of the engine room with its twin Cummins and two generators. Hydraulic windlass, stabilizers and thrusters were also a must in my view. The bespoke interior general arrangements is also perfectly adjusted to our family lifestyle… South-East Asia, the Celebes sea, Torres straight, Australia and the Pacific Ocean are definitely on my bucket list!”

“Ever since I stepped aboard my first Selene, I knew there was something special about these yachts. You can see and feel the passion in the craftsmanship, and the woodwork is just breathtaking. What truly impressed me was the strength and stability of the yacht out in open water. And the fact that I could tailor some of the interiors to my liking? That was the cherry on top. Every voyage just feels like a dream.”

“We've had our fair share of experiences with different yachts, but Selene stands out. The Caribbean trip we took last summer was nothing short of luxurious. The decks, the interiors, the entire build screams quality. And I must say, getting our yacht delivered faster than expected was a delightful surprise. If you're looking for the perfect blend of comfort and adventure, Selene is where you find it.”

Best Trawler Yacht Brands for Bluewater Adventures

16th nov 2023 by samantha wilson.

Rightboat logo

The rise of the trawler yacht is one of the most exciting developments in the boating industry in decades. It has opened the world of long-range travel to those who don’t care to sail and whose budget doesn’t run to a superyacht or explorer yacht. It has actually filled a gap that we didn’t even realize we desperately needed. Imagine being able to cruise the world in comfort on a yacht under 60 feet, or even under 40 feet. Or being able to cruise across blue water, with several guests staying aboard, to far-flung destinations on a yacht the size of a cabin cruiser.

Trawler yachts are almost an oxymoron—the idea of a sturdy and functional fishing trawler being a luxury yacht would once have been laughable. But today that’s exactly what these robust, spacious, and elegant long-range cruisers are. Here we take a look at our pick of some of the best trawler yacht brands on the market;

Australia’s Pacific Coast lets one cruising couple stretch their legs on a Krogen 48 North

From the fine entry to the wineglass transom, Kadey-Krogen’s Pure Full Displacement hull design uses full end-to-end symmetry to provide a softer ride with less pounding, better tracking in a following sea, and a safer and more comfortable ride.

A low displacement-to-length ratio allows us to drive the hull through the water easily, making the most of the power on board, with lighter, lower-horsepower engines further reducing weight and improving efficiency.

Having a yacht that can cross oceans means more than just efficiency. The hull and components must hold up in those conditions, and contribute to the experience. Every aspect of Kadey-Krogen trawlers is carefully considered to meet expectations.

1967 73 ft Long Range Ocean Crossing Trawler boat for sale

An outstanding 1967 73’Custom-Built Long-Distance, Ocean Crossing, Flush Deck Cruiser, well known as a “little ship”, is now on the market!

Pioneer was built in 1966-67 in Chula Vista, CA as a customized offshore yacht to meet the highest industrial and military standards of that time. The design was developed by GEORGE MOORE, a naval architect from SanDiego who spent time with the world class Kettenburg Company. The significant results from George’s design was an advanced build that focused on luxurious comfort, seaworthiness, stream lined beauty and a large hull designed extremely strong  meeting operating economy while gliding through the water. She is a one-of-a-kind and built to order. Some say unusually overbuilt for the early days of long distant cruising boats and too expensive to be built in todays competitive market. It begins with a fiberglass hull that is 6″ thick, 70’ WL (73’ LOA), 20 1/2’ beam, 6 1/2’ draft, full displacement that comes in at 91 net tons/130 gross tons. Her interior configuration has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 6 people in 3 staterooms including a full-beam master suite on the lower deck aft. Her elegant choices of wood throughout the vessel, create a warm cozy living space. The mechanics of the design were chosen to perfectly match the heavy-duty hull with redundancies everywhere.

Over her very active history Pioneer has completed many ocean passages, including dozens of long distance non-stop coastal passages (e.g. non-stop from Southern California to Hawaii, Mexico and now cruising the coastal waters of British Columbia up to Alaska

Pioneer has had 4 owners and was based in Southern California and Hawaii during her first 33 years. For the last 19 years Pioneer has been based in the PNW with annual trips north to and as far as Alaska.

Pioneer had a full time captain for 27+ years working for the 1st and 3rd owners The current owners have operated the vessel without crew since purchasing the boat, often spending weeks at anchor in extreme comfort while living onboard before going in for supplies.

Some notable events regarding Pioneer, while in Hawaii, she has been in a few movies with Harrison Ford and also Robert Wagner. A gorgeous well built yacht is now waiting for the next adventure.

The common parts reduce the need to store different parts for different make engines which is often the case on pleasure yachts that are built for long distance travel to remote places where parts have to be air shipped in at great expense and loss of time.

  • The flybridge deck is a prime space for making an enclosed sky lounge on the forward half reconfigured for a wonderful living/entertainment area. In recent years Pioneer carried 2 16’ 2 person kayaks, a 11’ rigid bottom inflatable and outboard with a 15 HP outboard motor, a 14” Whitehall rowing/sailing boat, and a touring bicycle. (Please note these items are not included in the sale of the vessel)

Hull and Deck Construction

The hull construction is of the highest quality fire retardant F/G resin reinforced with multiple layers of woven roving making a 1 ½” laminate on the inside and 1 ½” on the outside; and a 3” foam core center made up of 4” X 3” horizontal foam strips wrapped with F/G woven roving and resin making the boat hull solid, and able to stay afloat in the event of a severe break in the hull due to an impact accident. At the keel the F/G hull is reinforced up to 6” on the radius’. Internally the boat hull is further protected with built in 12 x F/G fuel tanks (3,925 US gals) surrounding the sides and bottom of the hulls interior, effectively creating a double hull below the water line.

Australia's first long-range Triton maritime surveillance drone set to arrive amid concerns over boat arrivals

MQ-4C Triton Unmanned Aircraft System

The first of at least four new large, unmanned surveillance aircraft ordered from the United States is due to arrive in the Northern Territory late on Saturday where it will soon play a key role in monitoring unauthorised maritime arrivals to the north.

Following months of test flights, the Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton — dubbed AUS 1 — flew out of a Californian Naval Air Station on Thursday on a flight via Wake Island before heading to its new home at Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Tindal.

Roughly the size of a 737 aircraft, the Triton drones will eventually be piloted remotely by the RAAF from the Edinburgh Air Base outside Adelaide to assist the Australian Border Force with maritime patrols as well as other military surveillance roles.

Last year Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy confirmed the purchase of Australia's fourth MQ-4C Triton as part of a $1.5 billion boost to RAAF capability, despite the US Navy recently halting production of the expensive unmanned platform.

On Friday radar tracking data confirmed "AUS 1" — flying under the call sign "SCORE47" — had departed from the Point Mugu Naval Air Station and was headed across the Pacific on its delivery flight to Australia.

The long-range surveillance drone's scheduled arrival late on Saturday night comes as authorities grapple with a number of recent unauthorised boat arrivals that have made it into Australian waters , and even the mainland, undetected.

Critics of the Triton say the aircraft, which operates at an altitude upwards of 50,000 feet, is particularly vulnerable to enemy attack and not capable of monitoring small wooden people-smuggling vessels, a claim hotly disputed by backers of the program.

The aircraft has the ability to survey tens of thousands of square kilometres in a single 28-hour mission, while providing visual and electronic data back in real time, and will be primarily deployed to monitor Australia's northern maritime approaches.

Australia first expressed interest in acquiring the Triton more than 20 years ago, with the platform based on the RQ-4B Global Hawk flown by the US Air Force, Japan and NATO, but optimised for maritime reconnaissance missions.

Ahead of the arrival of Australia's first MQ-4C, the head of Air Force Capability, Air Vice-Marshal Wendy Blyth, said RAAF pilots and crews had already been busy training on the platform in the United States.

"These personnel received the same training as their USN counterparts and gained valuable experience to ensure that Air Force is able to deploy the MQ-4C Triton effectively," she said.

Pentagon's top AUKUS adviser quits post after two years

The Pentagon's most senior adviser and coordinator for AUKUS has quit his role overseeing the military partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom and United States.

Abraham Denmark, who has been in the position since July 2022, has not disclosed what his next job will be.

He wrote on social media: "While my departure is bittersweet, I am excited for the future of AUKUS."

Abe Denmark addresses media at Fleet Base West, Rockingham, WA

Speaking at a press briefing, Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh said Mr Denmark had played a key role in helping Australia to eventually acquire nuclear-powered submarines.

"He was a key architect of the AUKUS Pillar One optimal pathway announced by the president and the prime ministers, and instrumental in developing advanced capability cooperation in AUKUS Pillar Two," Ms Singh said.
