hand on and the Coastline. Used to own a 27 and have been thinking about a Cat 30 or something similarly sized but maybe better build quality.

I've come across a 1988 Bristol 31.1 which needs some TLC but overall looks like it is in sound structural and mechanical shape. Seems a bit more solid than the of similar vintage. is requiring looking at things from the mid 80s.

My wife is a fair-weather only sailor and more sensitive to the motion. Thinking that the Bristol may offer a more comfortable ride.

Wondered if there are current/previous owners that can comment on the Bristol (or the Catalina).

Also wondering if anyone has the owners manual for the Bristol.

Thanks

Bristol 31.1

I've been looking for a sailboat I can single hand on Long Island Sound and the New England Coastline. Used to own a Catalina 27 and have been thinking about a Cat 30 or something similarly sized but maybe better build quality. I've come across a 1988 Bristol 31.1 which needs some TLC but overall looks like it is in sound structural and mechanical shape. Seems a bit more solid than the Catalina of similar vintage. Budget is requiring looking at things from the mid 80s. My wife is a fair-weather only sailor and more sensitive to the boat motion. Thinking that the Bristol may offer a more comfortable ride. Wondered if there are current/previous owners that can comment on the Bristol (or the Catalina). Also wondering if anyone has the owners manual for the Bristol. Thanks

bristol 31.1 sailboat

I have come to appreciate the reviews of boat surveyor Jack Hornor. Unfortunately he has passed away but his reviews remain. He reviewed for a couple of sailing magazines and has reviewed nearly every boat I have considered. I found his review for the Catalina 30. It does not appear that he ever reviewed the Bristol 31. But there are good reviews of some other Bristol boats in similar sizes that give you an idea of what he thought of the construction quality of Bristol boats. He reviews them very highly. The Bristol 31.1 is a Ted Hood design and Mr. Horner has always had good things to say about his designs. Some things to consider might be that the Bristol boats are full keel models with rudders mounted on a skeg. The catalinas are fin keels with spade rudders not mounted on a skeg. This would mean that the Bristols will be a little slower sailing but more stable and also less likely to lose their rudder. Jack Hornor also mentions that a full keel boat is more likely to slide over fishing cables and the cables of abandoned lobster and crab traps without entangling the propeller or catching on the rudder. His reviews say that the Bristol boats have incorporated keels whereas the Catalina has a bolt on fin keel that needs to be checked carefully in a survey. Often older ones will have to have their keel unbolted and reseated after 30 years. Jack Hornor's personal boat was one he sailed with a sailing club on Chesapeake Bay. They have lots of crab pots there and he has said that prop entanglements are common there. I would guess that there are similar problems in the part of the Atlantic where are you sail. http://www.spinsheet.com/resources1/used-boat-reviews/#.Vv-9Q8tOnqA http://www.spinsheet.com/resources1/used-boat-reviews/#.Vv-9Q8tOnqA Stats for Bristol 31.1from SailboatData.com http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=1422 For the Catalina 30 http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=7246 The sail area to displacement ratio, SA/D, the balance to displacement ratio B/D, and the displacement to length ratio D/L for the Catalina respectively are: 14.92, 41.17, 291.43 For the Bristol 31.1 they are: 14.59, 40.15, 329.80 Those are fairly similar values. The larger displacement to length ratio of the Bristol is probably due to the fact that they are rated at a thousand pounds heavier than the Catalina 30. From my research, that suggests that the Bristol will be a little slower but a little more stable in the water. For that reason the Bristol is on my short list of boats that I have been looking at. I have the same issue with my wife. She will feel more comfortable with a boat that feels stable in the water as opposed to breathtaking speed. Jack Hornor says that the Catalina was also available in a tall rig model with a mast that was 2 feet taller which is significant. That changes the sail area to displacement ratio and makes it a faster boat. And, he cautions that the greater sail area requires greater caution in heavier winds. So you would want to know the height of the mast of any Catalina you are looking at.

Just came across this thread. I've had a Bristol 31.1 for 5 years, so let me know if you need to know anything.

bristol 31.1 sailboat

Mark, I know this is an old thread but I was hoping you still had your Bristol 31.1. We are interested in one her in Rhode Island and there to no info on them on the internet. Let me know if you're still around, 9 years on. Neil

We did buy Chloe. She's somewhat of a mystery as far as recent history since we bought her from an estate. But she sails nicely, and handles the seas well. Unfortunately i had her berthed where she sat in the mud on a moon tide, which jemmed the centerboard up into the slot. We've since moved her to a mooring in E. Greenwich, RI. They are beautiful boats and built to a high standard. She needs a little work but the previous owner had refinished all the brightwork so she looks great. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk

Congratulations. I was trying to get time to head up to RI to take a look at her, but you beat me to it. She looked like she was in good shape. Tried to make an offer on one in MD this morning, but it sold just last night.

There was actually 3 Bristol 31.1s for sale, all close by here. Saquish is in CT and would have to be well found for the price they're asking. And Vagabond is in Portsmouth RI, and seems to be priced low due to somr work needed. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk

Any idea what the issue(s) are with Vagabond?

I love the Bristol quality and workmanship. It’s got a better than average sailing profile. one concern I had was this model was severely underpowered engine wise.

Yes in flat water it’s fine. If trying to make a harbor fighting a 20 knot headwind and 4 ft corresponding chop is where it being underpowered show up, or in fighting a 2 knot current

Bristol 31.1

bristol 31.1 sailboat

The Bristol 31.1 was one of the last smaller sailboats produced by the company, with about 36 built from 1985 to 1994. Ted Hood’s design is a mixture of old and new — a beamy racer-cruiser with a very long fin keel and a separate rudder with partial skeg. It also gives a nod to older Bristols by offering a centerboard option and plenty of teak trim.

This was the period when Bristol evolved into a top-quality all-around builder, so everything from the teak and mahogany interiors to the gear is excellent. The 31.1 pays more attention to comfort than the older Bristols.

Review of Bristol 31.1

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Bristol 31.1 has been built with different keel alternatives.

CentreBoard

One option is a centreboard keel. A centreboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.07 - 1.17 meter (3.51 - 3.81 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Another option is a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.62 - 1.72 meter (5.31 - 5.61 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Bristol 31.1 is typically equipped with an inboard Universal 18 diesel engine at 14 hp (10 kW). Calculated max speed is about 4.1 knots

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Bristol 31.1 is 1.82, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.7 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Bristol 31.1 is about 156 kg/cm, alternatively 876 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 156 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 876 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 30m 2 (322 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
