What is the MSC Yacht Club? Take a look at MSC Cruises’ luxury suite area

MSC Cruises sails nearly two dozen beautiful ships from home ports around the world, but their inviting sun decks can be crowded, and you're likely to encounter queues for dinner, shows and guest services.

The trick to creating a more luxurious experience on this big-ship cruise line is to book a stay in the line's Yacht Club. This upscale enclave within MSC Cruises ' larger ships offers guests more spacious accommodations, butler service and dedicated restaurants and lounges — even coffee delivered to your room each morning, just the way you like it.

Because of the Yacht Club , MSC can offer an inviting experience for cruisers who like big-ship cruising but crave more elevated accommodations, dining and amenities. MSC Cruises was one of the first lines to introduce this ship-within-a-ship concept, along with Norwegian Cruise Line . Now other popular cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean , also have adopted it.

The Yacht Club section on several of MSC Cruises' ships offers gated access to semi-private dining, butler service and more, but it comes at a price. Find out how much you can expect to pay and what you'll get for your money.

What are the MSC Yacht Club perks?

All stays in the Yacht Club include priority check-in and checkout; priority disembarkation and boarding on shore excursions days; free premium alcohol and Wi-Fi packages; a bathrobe and slippers; complimentary access to the Aurea Spa thermal suite; 24-hour concierge and butler services (dining and spa reservations, unpacking and repacking, morning coffee delivery, etc.); a free daily in-cabin newspaper of your choice, delivered; and the ability to change your cruise one time without penalty.

Yacht Club cruisers are also entitled to discounts of 10% on spa treatments, 20% on specialty dining packages and 40% on spa packages.

In addition, passengers booked in the Yacht Club have access to their own dedicated bar, lounge and restaurant, as well as a semi-private outdoor bar, pool and hot tubs, all on an exclusive sun deck. When ships dock at the line's private island, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve , Yacht Club passengers have private beach and restaurant access .

In their cabins, Yacht Club cruisers will find a pillow menu, memory foam mattresses, high-quality linens, bathrooms with marble floors, a specialty coffee maker, complimentary open minibar access, one gratis bottle of spirits (choose from a list of available options), free one-time snacks, 24-hour room service and nightly turn-down chocolates from Venchi, an Italian chocolatier that partners with the cruise line.

The largest Yacht Club in the fleet is on MSC World Europa, offering 152 suites. The second-largest is found on the line's two Seaside EVO Class ships, MSC Seashore and MSC Seascape, which each have 131 suites.

MSC Yacht Club cabins

All accommodations in the Yacht Club are labeled as suites, even though they comprise some standard cabin types. The specific stateroom types offered will vary by ship, but in general, they range from windowless interior cabins and deluxe balcony rooms to Executive and Royal Suites with more space, walk-in closets and bathrooms with both showers and bathtubs.

New to the fleet with the line's World Class are 1,600-square-foot Owner Suites, which include multi-room layouts, walk-in closets, bathtubs and balconies, each with a whirlpool and alfresco dining area.

Also new are Duplex Suites, offering two decks of space, with the bedroom and bathroom upstairs and a dining area, living room and guest bath downstairs. These also include two private sun decks with loungers, one of which boasts a whirlpool.

How much does it cost to stay in the MSC Yacht Club?

As you might expect, the cost to stay in the Yacht Club depends on several factors, including cabin type, the length of the sailing and where you're going and when. However, in line with the rest of the brand's pricing, a stay in the Yacht Club is an excellent value when you compare it to stays in other lines' dedicated suite areas or to luxury cruise prices.

I priced out several sailings departing over the next two years on some of the line's newest and largest ships. This is what was available at press time. (Note: MSC Cruises' website will only allow me to choose a general Yacht Club designation when booking. That means a guaranteed suite within the Yacht Club, but you won't know what type it is until closer to sailing.)

Each of the handicapped staterooms features: larger size (compared to the non-accessible counterpart), wider doors (width 35 inches / 0,9 m, sitting-level keycard slot), wider turning spaces (5 ft / 1,5 m), ramped thresholds, beds with open bed frames, lowered vanity in the sitting area, amplified phones, captioned TVs, wider bathrooms (door width 35 inches / 0,9 m, roll-in shower, fold-down shower bench, grab rails, lower sinks and closet rods, raised toilets, hand-held shower head, seat height from the floor 0,4 m).

All ADA cabins also feature a convenient location near the elevators.

The ship's gangways are all wide enough for most types of wheelchairs and disability scooters.

All decks provide elevator access.

All passenger lifts have visual, audio and Braille deck indicators.

During an emergency, dedicated crew personnel helps all disabled guests (also those with reduced mobility) to board the ship's lifeboats.

MSC World Europa cabins review

Of all MSC World Europa staterooms (2633 total), around 65% are outside. Most passenger cabins have a double bed (convertible to 2x single beds) plus a convertible couch (double sofabed) to accommodate 3rd/4th person. The number of all cabin categories is 19, including 7 new for MSC types of cabins. Guaranteed cabin categories include YCW-Yacht Club Suite, BW-Balcony, OW-Oceanview, IW-Inside.

• Double beds are not available in categories Interior Studio and Outside Studio.
• Bunk beds are not suitable for kids under 16 yo.
• 3rd and 4th beds are not available in categories Interior Studio, Interior Bella, Oceanview Studio, Promenade View Balcony, MSC Yacht Club Interior Suite.
• 5th and 6th beds are available only in the category Family Suite Aurea.
• Cabin balconies are two types - with a metal balustrade/guardrail, and with a half-glass/half-metal balustrade.

For accommodating more guests (up to 8), the ship offers 3 types of "family cabins", comprising of 2 or 3 modular connecting rooms (and their balconies). These are the categories FPB ("Super Family Plus"), FLA ("Super Family"), and FMB ("Family") balconied staterooms.

For passengers with disabilities, the liner has a total of 65 handicapped/wheelchair-accessible ADA cabins (33x Inside, 24x Balcony, 8x Junior Suite).

World Europa is the first MSC ship to have Promenade View cabins (aft located "interior balcony" cabins overlooking Promenade Deck), Duplex Suites (2-deck accommodations with large terraces, some with an outdoor Jacuzzi), AUREA Suites (with aft-facing wraparound balconies), AUREA Family Suites (larger-sized balcony cabins with a kids bedroom with bunk beds), Infinite Oceanview (French Balcony cabins with down-sliding windows/balustrades opening to a Juliet/false balcony).

Follows the review of MSC World Europa staterooms as amenities, furniture and included (complimentary) services.

All passenger cabins as standard/complimentary amenities offer twin beds (singles convertible to King-size double bed/upon request), leather headboard, bedside tables, wall-mounted reading lamps, pillow menu, large wardrobe, smart HDTV (with an interactive TV system allowing bookings from the cabin, also itinerary/ports and tours/excursions information, movies on demand, live webcam views), direct-dial phone (intercom/onboard connections only), electronic safe box and lifejackets (in the closet), hairdryer, mini-bar/fridge, sitting/lounge area (mirrored vanity table, chairs), en-suite bathroom (WC/wall-mounted toilet, single-sink vanity, shower), individual air-conditioning (thermostat controlled), Wi-Fi Internet access.

All MSC YACHT CLUB suites are also fitted with Nespresso machines. All Suite categories feature larger bathrooms with bathtubs.

• YC4-Royal Suites feature a large balcony (with an outdoor Jacuzzi/whirlpool bath and alfresco dining area with a 6-seat table), separate dining room, living room, bathroom (with spa tub), walk-in closet (wardrobe with shoe rack, luggage storage), 2x HDTVs.

The new AUREA cabin categories are S3 (Family Suite), SC3 (Promenade View Suite), SE3 (Grand Suite), SJ3 (Suite with Balcony Jacuzzi), and ST3 (Grand Suite with Wraparound Balcony).

All "Promenade View" staterooms are actually interior-facing cabins with balconies that overlook the Promenade (partially covered by a LED screen interior space lined up with dining and entertainment venues).

Interconnecting “cluster cabins” are specifically designed for large families and family group travel. This new concept allows up to 3 cruise staterooms to be linked together and opened up. Family cabins are in 2 main categories – FAMILY (max occupancy 6 passengers, 2 connecting rooms, 2 baths, 1 balcony) and SUPERFAMILY (max occupancy 6 passengers, 2 connecting rooms, 2 baths /1 with bathtub, 2 balconies).

MSC “BELLA cabins” are in categories I1-Inside, O1-Oceanview, B1-Balcony. Booking Bella-class staterooms additionally offer as extra perks: 20-hour gourmet buffet, organized daily scheduled activities, access to a dedicated swimming pool, modern gym, open-air sports facilities, plus earning MSC Club points for more perks on the next cruise.

MSC “FANTASTICA cabins” are in categories I2-Inside, O2-Oceanview, B2-Balcony, FLA-SuperFamily. Booking Fantastica-class staterooms additionally offer as extra perks: 24-hour room service, 50% discount on fitness classes, specially dedicated to kids activities, free in-room dining (breakfast), free delivery, priority dinner sitting, cooking sessions with the ship’s Master Chef. These higher-grade cabins are with upper deck location and offer easy access to elevators and popular lounges.

MSC “AUREA cabins” are in categories B3-Balcony, S3-Family Suite, SC3-Promenade View Suite, SE3-Grand Suite, SJ3-Suite with Balcony Jacuzzi, ST3-Grand Suite with Premium Balcony. Booking Aurea-class staterooms additionally offers: a complimentary Aurea Spa package, Thermal Area unlimited access, 60-min massage PP (max 2 per cabin), 20-min Solarium usage, welcome cocktail party, plus priority services (check-in, embarkation, tendering), bathrobes, slippers, luxury spa products, 24-hour unlimited drinks (specialty coffee, wine and beer, cocktails, soft beverages, gelato ice cream).

MSC YACHT CLUB passengers enjoy an exclusive butler service (available 24-hours), dedicated concierge service (24-hour Concierge Reception), all-inclusive dining (a la carte menu, your-time dining in an exclusive gourmet restaurant (TBN), unlimited drinks (from cabin’s mini-bar and in all Yacht Club complex areas), exclusive “The One Sun Deck” (suites-only sundeck area) access, exclusive Top Sail Lounge access. The YACHT CLUB’s exclusive lounge areas are “Top Sail Lounge” (with its own restaurant) and “The One Pool Deck” (swimming pool, whirlpools, sundeck served by its own bar).

Passengers booked in MSC Wellness cabins (IW-Inside, OW-Oceanview, BW-Balcony, and YCW-Yacht Club) receive access to dedicated sports facilities, training equipment, and amenities, along with the personal trainer, personalized fitness program, exclusive fitness-themed excursions, healthy food/drinks, charge-free laundry service (gym wear only).

Note: On decks 13 and 14, balcony cabins colored in pink are the line’s new “wellness” class. In the same class are also the interior staterooms on deck 13, plus 4 outside staterooms on deck 8.

ZOE is MSC's (and cruise industry's first) new in-cabin digital assistant. The technology was developed by Harman International (US-based company, a fully-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics).

• ZOE is an artificial intelligence device (voice-enabled, with advanced voice recognition software) available in all passenger staterooms.
• ZOE speaks 7 languages, answer cruise-related questions, provides info on shipboard services-activities-facilities, makes reservations and bookings.
• The digital device features far-field microphones, top-quality speaker, quad-core processor (for fast response times), direct phone connection (through Bluetooth). The system can also upgrade its own database to answer previously unanswerable questions.

• By day: Feel at ease in casual wear, including t-shirts and tops, but to maintain a respectful atmosphere, we kindly request that swimwear not be worn at any time.
• By night: We kindly ask that you dress in smart casual attire. This includes options such as dresses, skirts, long pants, jeans, and button-down tops. However, please avoid shorts and flip flops.

I tried a ship-within-a-ship cruise experience and it was worth it for the endless perks—here’s why

The MSC Yacht Club affords travelers a totally different cruising experience, but you’ll have to splurge.

I heard tales of luxury from people about the ritzy MSC Yacht Club , the ship-within-a-ship concept where discerning passengers enjoy their own area of the cruise ship that includes a dedicated restaurant, private lounge, separate pool and sundeck as well as private butlers and concierges to take of any whim while cruising. The elevated Yacht Club boasts priority everything while sailing MSC.

I sailed on a four-night cruise on the new MSC Seashore, a glitzy ship with Italian flair intermingled with references to New York City at every turn. Although the ship was well-appointed and had amazing dining, drinking and entertainment venues, and a bountiful Top Sail main buffet, thousands of passengers made the ship feel crowded at times, elevators were slow, and as I strolled through the general pools, they were boisterous and crowded.

Switch gears to MSC Seashore’s Yacht Club, passkey-protected for lucky guests, and is a 180 from the ship’s general spaces. Once you scan your handy Yacht Club wrist badge, or your room key, you’re instantly given entrance to a breathtaking retreat of 131 staterooms and suites. All this luxury does come at a price. Cruise fares will vary based on destination, time of year, and cabin category, but generally speaking you can expect to pay double for the Yacht Club. And from my experience, it’s worth it. You’re fast-tracked through everything

The Yacht Club’s exclusivity and impeccable service standard started from the moment I got dropped off at the Port Canaveral cruise terminal. There were hundreds of people waiting to board at 1pm on embarkation day. I saw in the distance a canopy that said MSC Yacht Club. My husband and I wheeled our carry-on luggage to the representative under the canopy. I gave her my name and within two seconds, she gave me a sticker to wear and up we ascended on the escalator to check in. Just five minutes later, I was directed to the dedicated check-in area for Yacht Club guests. To my right, I saw about 1,000 people serpentine through ropes to do general check-in. I felt a sense of relief; who wants to wait in that line? Five minutes later, a butler from the Yacht Club insisted on wheeling my luggage to board the ship and I was in my room in a total on 12 minutes from the time I stepped foot out of the car to my stateroom in the Yacht Club.

Relaxing and streamlined

In addition, Yacht Club guests have the freedom to get off the ship first for excursions. Your butler will happily escort you off the ship with a smile. Guests also can disembark on the last morning first, which is a big convenience. Your butler walks you right to the place you disembark, bypassing crowds and hassles. Port Canaveral is about an hour away from Orlando International Airport, and we took a 10 am flight home. We didn’t have to linger around until the afternoon for our flight home.

Another perk is that there’s a special seating area in the theater for shows. All the shows were excellent during my voyage. All other ship passengers have to make reservations in advance for shows but that’s not the case for the privileged Yacht Club passengers. As long as you arrive about 10 minutes before any show you choose, a crew member from the Club will allow you entry into a special roped-off section. Again, no rushing through dinner—you have the flexibility to plan your evenings your way.

Your Yacht Club package is packed with remarkable value

The price tag may sound daunting, but there’s lots of value there. All Yacht Club cabins and suites include a premium drink package that covers beverages up to $15. You can use this perk both in the Yacht Club and throughout the ship. In addition, your package includes a two-device Wi-Fi package, which worked well during my sailing. Finally, you get access to the thermal spa suite, which is a place to indulge after a day in port or a sea day. Commonly, there’s a taboo regarding mini-bars, but not in the Yacht Club. It’s stocked each day with the beverages you want; just tell your butler and consider it done.

You get perks ashore too

If your sailing includes a call to Ocean Cay, MSC’s private island, Yacht Club guests get an elevated experience there too. Yacht Club guests enjoy a private area, and a dedicated restaurant called the Ocean House. While other ship guests were hosted to a buffet of predictable fare, I enjoyed a lobster roll, and my husband chose carne asada. In my opinion, one thing that could be improved was the tram service to the Yacht Club’s private area. We were told the last tram back was 3:30pm if we didn’t want to trek a 15-minute walk in the heat. Since we were docked in Ocean Cay for the evening and weren’t sailing, I was a bit dismayed by this logistical quirk. I felt like I was keeping an eye on my phone to make sure I didn’t miss the last tram.

You have private areas with curated food and drink and outdoor spaces

Within the Yacht Club complex, there’s the Yacht Club Restaurant, Top Sail Lounge and the One Pool Buffet, which are all exclusive to Yacht Club guests. Obviously, the food and service are steps above other dining venues of the ship, I can vouch for that. Although the food is delicious, if you don’t want to pay extra to dine at the specialty restaurants or fuss in the main buffet, eating three meals a day in the Yacht Club restaurant can get a bit monotonous. The breakfast is the same daily, and lunch and dinner offer a menu with daily specials plus a few standby selections like a hamburger or pasta each day. Although the Yacht Club Restaurant concept is desirable, I would strongly suggest dining in other venues on board, especially for dinner. I thoroughly enjoyed specialty dining in Ocean Cay Restaurant, Butcher’s Cut, and Kaito Teppanyaki. I also want to mention that late afternoon high tea is offered daily at the Yacht Club Restaurant. It was one of the nicest I have experienced at sea.

Also available exclusively to Yacht Club passengers is the Top Sail Lounge, which offers panoramic water views and has chef-curated selections from morning through late night. We enjoyed popping into the lounge at all hours to try finger foods and sweets. The One Pool Buffet offers a more casual option for breakfast and lunch by the pool. The buffet has grilled fish, sandwiches and lots of delicious options if you want to dine outside.

There’s also an exclusive area with a private pool and two whirlpools for Yacht Club guests only. The sun deck loungers are very comfortable and I never had to worry about finding a lounger, there are ample. One issue I had was that there was almost no shade on the sun deck; there were shaded day beds for Royal Suite and Owners Suite guests, but beyond those, I couldn’t find any shade, which was disappointing.

You can justify the price at the end of your cruise

Overall, the best way to explain my enthusiasm for my MSC Yacht Club experience is this: it’s better to book an interior stateroom in the Yacht Club than a luxe cabin outside the Yacht Club. It’s worth the splurge and you return home feeling truly pampered and it’s money well-spent. And I make this prediction: Once you try a ship-within-a-ship concept like the MSC Yacht Club, you won’t want cruise any other way. Bon Voyage!

Here goes with another live review of our January cruise around the Med on a new ship to us, MSC World Europa. Following a fabulous New Year’s live review from @Stockjock -this will focus on Yacht Club experience in particular.

We have a couple of MSC excursions booked and I’ll report on those and I’m sure there will be food photos, menus and snaps of the entertainment on offer. We are intrigued to see this large ship and in particular check out the new design with open y shaped stern. Equipped to carry 6762 passengers and 2138 crew, is this ship too extensive to enjoy or an elaborate extravaganza?

Yes, Mark, I wonder that too! I have had a few people prepare me that it may not be such great service in the YC restaurant as so much bigger but, I’ll certainly report what we find! 

With the exception of Civitavecchia you're visiting the same ports as our trip in October.  Some of the ports are a gimme for what to do (Pompeii from Naples & Mt Etna from Messina), others not so much, so particularly following for the excursions.  Hope you enjoy the trip!

Thank you. We have done the itinerary many times. Last years report covers a great excursion we took Rabat, Mosta & Mdina excursion in Valletta and another to Aix-en-Provence from Marseille both booked with MSC. Both were good!

FWIW, we did Mt. Etna from Messina years back.  I wouldn't consider it a "gimme" in terms of what to do. We took a long bus ride to near the top (but not at the top).  It was hot down below, but we froze our buns off once we got there.  So I bought a jacket while my teeth chattered.  We walked around for a little bit, stared at some hardened lava, and got back into the bus.  Frankly, I didn't love it.

To be fair, yours isn't the first experience we've heard of this, and it does give me cause for doubt.

The particular excursion we'd been looking at is the "monster truck / bus" trip up to (near) the top - I hear better things from folks who go up that far - but that does have the disadvantage of being hella expensive. Hmmm.

Hey hope your enjoying your cruise, I have a question in Civitavecchia port, it says it arrives at 7am and departs 7pm, we are booked for March and wanted to take the shuttle from port to Rome and vice versa from MSC excursions, do you know if everyone starts debarkation at 7am, trying to purchase tickets to the Vatican, does anyone know what time we actually arrive at Rome, no one at MSC customer service knows, I appreciate it.

I’ll try and find out when we get onboard. They never tell you the times of the excursion til the last minute when onboard but I’ll try to find out. Whenever we booked excursions with MSC we are only given tickets the day before - I guess so they are accurate with the times- just in case of delays or cancellations. 

Meanwhile, someone else may read this that have been on that excursion into Rome and May remember the times.

Checked in online with British Airways. Got these flights with reward points so pleased about that. Mr CT just finishing his packing. I just finished mine a while ago!

Got house ready for our cat sitters and bought in extra treats for them! Then we’ll be up nice and early to call an Uber to London Heathrow. We enjoy the ease of door to door service -as can’t be bothered with train changes and the like!  I’m really looking forward to this break. It’s been icy in U.K. and although the nights are getting lighter, it is very cold. Let’s hope we get some sunshine!

Perfect timing to be heading out of the UK as the already cold weather is set to go even lower over the next week.

this means, the ship reaches the Port at 7am, it lasts about an hour before anyone ís able to leave the ship (anchor the vessel, get permission from port authorities etc.). In the past the excursions starting approx. at 10 am (Bus departure), time to travel to vatican ís 1,5h. So it's about noon when you will arrive Vatican - If No Traffic Jam will Happen 😉

I'm wondering If the service in Restaurant ís as good as we expirienced it in former Cruises with MSC in YC on other vessels. We have also concerns about a YC that ís grown to big

Aw! We will just miss each other! I’ve been in YC in three shops that are ‘sister’ ships Virtuosa, Grandiosa and Euribia. World Europa looks different, so we are intrigued! Let me know if you need any particular information checking out. Good to have you along! 

We traveled on Meraviglia 2x, Belissima 1x, Grandiosa 6x, Seaview 1x and Divina also once. Virtuosa we've booked twice but Corona won't let us enter the ship twice....

I'm excited If the ship is to big for us, we've seen it already in May 23 in Genua on our 6th Cruise with Grandiosa - the ship ís very impressive!

I'm eager to read your impressions from the ship - í hope you'll have a nice Trip and everything is nice and easy. ☺️

In a very comfortable Uber on the way to airport. Driver is a professional award winning, actor who does this in spare time and it’s been a pleasure speaking with him. Mr CT having a snooze!

MSC World Europa was the first Liquified Natural Gas fueled ship in the MSC Cruises fleet and features a new generation wastewater treatment system, as well other technology to reduce the ship’s impact on the environment. Another significant step forward in MSC’s commitment to environmental stewardship. MSC World Europa features advanced technology and brings MSC’s fleet a lot closer to our aspiration of “net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions our fleet”. The Liquified Natural Gas-powered engines ensure: - 99% reduction of SOx emissions - 85% reduction of NOx emissions - 25% reduction in greenhouse gasses (GHG) - Major elimination of particulate matter in exhaust

Ground-breaking design

A striking futuristic silhouette cutting through the water with ease and grace shaped like an arrow with her signature plumb bow and never seen before Y-shaped aft opens onto the impressive 104-metre-long Europa Promenade with breath-taking ocean views. Half open to the sky and half-covered by an imposing LED-sky screen , the screen will feature tailor-made displays throughout the day.

One of the key features of the completely re-imagined ship promenade is The Venom Drop @ The Spiral - a striking architectural centrepiece in the form of a dry slide spanning 11 decks - the longest at sea! This innovative shape of the ship is not only a pleasure to look at but also provides immense functionality benefits to enhance guests’ experience on board.

Exploring the Med onboard MSC World Europa, ideal for multi-gen groups

ONBOARD MSC WORLD EUROPA — Inaugurated in 2022, the MSC World Europa is the first ship in MSC’s World class and the first to use liquefied natural gas, along with a host of other technologies and practices aimed at minimizing its environmental impact.

Based year-round in the Mediterranean, it is also MSC’s largest ship. There are 2,626 cabins (with capacity for 6,762 passengers), 22 decks, and more than 30 bars and dining venues, not to mention other experiences and entertainment options.

As soon as you board, you feel almost dizzy from the size of the ship and the central space – the World Galleria – which features a multitude of restaurants, bars, arcades, theatres, and shops on three levels, topped with a LED-lit vault.

You reconnect with the sea and the feeling of being on a ship when you arrive at the rear. Among its most original features, the ship’s stern (Y-shaped) opens onto a long outdoor promenade (on deck 8), lined with several restaurants and terraces, dominated by the Venom Drop @ The Spiral slide (11 decks high!), which has become one of its signature attractions.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY, MULTICULTURAL – EVEN A BIT PLAYFUL

As evidenced by the numerous families encountered on board, the MSC World Europa can be a good choice for multi-generational trips.

In addition to activity clubs (for the youngest passengers to teens), the ship has nine pools (indoor and outdoor), water slides, a roller-skating rink, bumper cars, arcades, virtual experiences, and three theatres offering interactive experiences for young people, plus more conventional Broadway-style shows.

This is complemented by an impressive range of dining options: two large buffet areas, several dining rooms (included in the basic packages), and six specialty restaurants, including the Chef’s Garden Kitchen, which offers creations by Michelin-starred chef Niklas Ekstedt. His presentations are very successful and prepared with herbs grown in the first hydroponic garden at sea. For aperitifs, you can choose between the champagne bar, the distillery, and the pub that brews its own beer.

A SECRET ON THE SHIP

That said, the ship conceals a secret spot that is very popular with passengers: a hidden bar – a ‘speakeasy’ – not mentioned anywhere in the brochures, and for which you need an invitation.

Without revealing everything here (the mystery and the way to access it are part of the experience), let’s say it was a favourite of our group, a great idea “that MSC is proud of,” says Marco Cimbaro, the cruise director.

In this space, with about 20 tables, you no longer feel like you’re on a ship but in a 1920s bar during Prohibition, with a small group entertaining guests with swing and jazz tunes, plus vintage decor, dim lighting, and smoky cocktails prepared at the table. It’s original and impressive, and the idea will be reproduced on MSC World America, set to launch in 2025.

“This ship will essentially offer the same design and entertainment options, although there will also be adjustments based on the clientele of this ship, where there will be more North Americans,” says Cimbaro.

A SHIP THAT LIVES UP TO ITS NAME

In addition to its design, MSC World Europa stands out for its multicultural character. “On this ship, English is not the dominant language: announcements are made in six or seven languages, and both our daily newspaper and the restaurant menus and services are multilingual, which passengers appreciate a lot,” says Cimbaro.

He adds: “Italians, Spaniards, and French are the three main clienteles, but on average, there are about 60 nationalities on board. For now, Canadians are not very numerous, but that will certainly change with World America.”

FLEXIBLE BOARDING

Unlike other cruise lines, MSC allows its customers to start their cruise at any port of call, an interesting option for Quebecers who can take advantage of numerous flights serving Rome, Barcelona or Marseille, for example.

MSC World Europa’s itinerary offered a nice variety of ports of call, from must-see destinations like Civitavecchia (i.e. Rome, an hour away) to lesser-known ones like Genoa (90 minutes from Cinque Terre) and Palermo in Sicily, which is increasingly popular with Quebecers (and my personal favourite).

In terms of spectacular arrivals, the prize goes to the island of Malta, where the ship slips past the golden towers and ramparts of Valletta at dawn. It’s a sight not to be missed from the decks or your balcony.

BIG ADVANTAGES

With its size, capacity, and very family-friendly clientele, the MSC World Europa is not necessarily suited for passengers seeking tranquility or high-end experiences (unless you opt for the Yacht Club, see below).

However, this ship represents a good option for those considering a first cruise in the Mediterranean (a nice itinerary and a starting point you can choose) and for those who want to enjoy a multi-generational trip.

Moreover, MSC ships embrace their European character, which is evident with numerous Italian specialties in the buffets, the onboard clientele, and especially in receiving several services in French.

GOOD TO KNOW

Here are some tips to help your clients get the most out of their MSC World Europa cruise …

• In winter, temperatures are cooler, even in the Mediterranean. Some outdoor pools are heated, but few people use them. The same goes for outdoor tables, which means that at certain times, there is a crowd around the buffets. For a quieter breakfast, opt for the dining rooms.
•  With a ship of this size, there is little room for improvisation. It is best to reserve a table at one of the specialty restaurants, and for desired activities, at the beginning of the cruise. Even theatre seats must be reserved (via the app) on the same day or the day before.
• In general, the dining room menu is limited. Those who like variety – and higher quality – can purchase a package including two to four specialty restaurants. The range of packages is quite extensive, both for these restaurants and for excursions (combos) and drink packages.
• There are many young children and sometimes a lot of action, but the ship has quieter spots like the MSC Aurea Spa, the Raj Polo Tea House, the Emporium café, and some specialty bars (whose terraces are also empty during the day).

•  The Yacht Club is akin to ‘a cruise within a cruise.’ Its members have their own restaurants, their own pools, special menus and treatments, butlers, special excursions, and enhanced boarding at ports. “Everything is special there!” says Cimbaro. “To avoid the crowds, it’s really a different way to enjoy your stay. And I don’t think many other cruise lines do as much for their VIP customers!”

MSC Cruises cabin primer MSC Cruises has become one of the fastest-growing lines in the cruise industry, with about two dozen ships in its fleet. The vessels fall into six classes : Lirica, Musica, Fantasia, Meraviglia, Seaside and World. Although cabin offerings can vary from ship to ship and class to class, the standard types remain the same: inside, outside, balcony and suite. Additionally, you'll find the same basic amenities in each room, unless otherwise noted below. They include two twin beds that can be joined to form a queen- or king-size bed; an in-cabin bathroom with a shower, a sink, a toilet and basic soap, shower gel and shampoo; a couple of nightstands; a chair or sofa; a desk/vanity; a closet; a safe; a hair dryer; a minifridge; a phone; USB outlets and a selection of both North American and European outlets. Ranging from 140 to 301 square feet (depending on the ship), they make for great sleeping because they're so dark. They're also ideal for passengers who are on a budget. In addition to the standard amenities mentioned above, they provide room for anywhere from two to four passengers to sleep. (Rooms that sleep more than two feature bunks that pull down from the ceiling.) These cabins are available with the line's Bella and Fantastica experiences. If you're sailing solo, some MSC vessels offer cabins for one outfitted with a twin bed that converts into a couch. These interior studio accommodations are only available with the Bella package on MSC Meraviglia , MSC Bellissima and the line's World Class ships. Ocean-view cabins on MSC Cruises ships Ocean-view rooms are similar to insides in that they provide basic amenities — but with a view. Offering 129 to 269 square feet of space (depending on the specific ship and ocean-view category), these staterooms allow you to see outside through a porthole or a window that doesn't open. MSC's outside cabins are available to passengers who book Bella and Fantastica packages. Additionally, if you're traveling with your family or another group, several of MSC Cruises' ships — particularly those in the Meraviglia and Seaside classes — feature space for as many as 10 passengers via a series of connecting rooms. Options are available at the ocean-view and balcony levels. Balcony cabins on MSC Cruises ships You might be surprised to discover that most of MSC Cruises' balcony cabins provide less interior square footage than what's available in inside or ocean-view staterooms. Balcony rooms run anywhere from 129 to 205 square feet, but their key feature is, of course, a private balcony, which does add an extra 32 to 129 square feet, depending on the vessel and specific type of balcony room booked. These cabins are bookable in conjunction with MSC's Bella, Fantastica and Aurea experiences. Although balcony cabins offer upgraded amenities, including MSC's brand of hand lotion and toiletries, they are largely the same as inside and ocean-view accommodations. MSC's newest ships — including those in the Meraviglia, Seaside and World Classes — house connecting balcony rooms that can sleep up to 10 in the same group traveling together. Additionally, on its World Class ships, the line has introduced inward-facing balconies, similar to the ones Royal Caribbean pioneered in 2009 with the debut of its Oasis Class vessels . On World Europa, for example, they overlook the ship's promenade, offering views of the activity below, rather than the ocean. MSC Cruises suites All ships in MSC's fleet have suites that can be booked as part of the Fantastica and Aurea packages, but it's Aurea that offers the largest number of perks, as outlined above. The several types of suites vary by ship in terms of size and amenities. Some come with balconies, while others only offer floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows. Junior Suites Although this room type is listed as a suite, it's essentially a balcony cabin with a bit more space — 183 square feet of interior accommodation with a balcony that ranges from 140 to 183 square feet. Standard suites include rooms with huge balconies larger than the cabin's interior space and ones with private whirlpool tubs. They run from 269 to 355 square feet, with balconies measuring 32 to 409 square feet. Grand Suites Coming in between 377 and 420 square feet, with balconies spanning from 32 to 495 square feet, Grand Suites — found on Seaside and World Class ships — come in two types. They include standard one-bedroom Grand Suites, as well as two-bedroom varieties. The latter has one bedroom with a queen-size bed and another with two twins. It sleeps up to five passengers and offers two bathrooms — one with a shower and the other with a bathtub. While most suites are designed for double occupancy, some suite accommodations on MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Magnifica can sleep up to five people. MSC Yacht Club suites on MSC ships All cabins located in the MSC Yacht Club — an exclusive, gated area on select ships — are called suites, even the smallest and least expensive, which don't have windows or balconies. Yacht Club suite types range from insides to two-deck duplexes, all of which come with butler and concierge services, luxuriously appointed furnishings (such as real marble finishes, memory foam mattresses and Egyptian cotton sheets) and access to members-only restaurants, bars (alcohol is free there), lounges, pools and sun decks. The Yacht Club features seven different types of rooms. Note: Not all Yacht Clubs have the same suite types available. MSC Yacht Club Interior Suites Although these 161- to 226-square-foot cabins don't offer a view or fresh air, they are elegantly decorated and include all the Yacht Club benefits mentioned above. MSC Yacht Club Deluxe Suites These Yacht Club digs are the equivalent of a balcony cabin — but in a dedicated area that includes all the exclusive perks. They run 236 to 366 square feet and have balconies ranging from 54 to 86 square feet, so they also come with a bit more space, both inside and outdoors. MSC Yacht Club Deluxe Grand Suites Similarly, Deluxe Grand Suites are like the Yacht Club equivalent of booking a Grand Suite with more perks. Depending on the ship, they offer anywhere from 269 to 463 square feet of space, plus 65- to 129-square-foot balconies. Some Grand Suites also have two bedrooms instead of one. Further, these rooms on Seaside Class ships include bathrooms with bathtubs, as well as separate living areas. MSC Yacht Club Duplex Suites Rising two decks, MSC's duplex staterooms measure 495 to 635 square feet and come with 65- to 334-square-foot balconies. They feature living rooms with two-person sofa beds downstairs and master bedrooms upstairs, which also sleep two passengers. Each of these accommodations comes complete with two walk-in closets and two bathrooms — one with a bathtub and one with a shower. Most duplexes on Meraviglia and World Class ships also have their own private whirlpool tubs. MSC Yacht Club Executive and Family Suites The line's Executive and Family Suites, available only on Fantasia Class vessels, are an excellent choice for anyone who wants to stay in the Yacht Club with a family or other group of more than two people. This option, which is one type of suite (despite its confusing name), has space for up to five cruisers via a combination of bunk beds, sofa beds and beds that pull down from the ceiling, depending on the ship. The suites clock in at around 431 to 549 square feet, depending on the vessel. The only drawback is that these staterooms have no balconies and no in-room dining areas, but they do include all the perks you'd find in Yacht Club cabins. MSC Yacht Club Royal Suites Although they only occupy one level, at 388 to 667 square feet, MSC's Yacht Club Royal Suites are right up there with the Duplex Suites in terms of space. They offer the second-largest amount of square footage after the Owner's Suites. They come with huge balconies comprising 355 to 753 square feet of outdoor area. Additionally, bathrooms in these suites offer bathtubs on Fantasia, Meraviglia, Seaside and World Class ships, and the latter three have private whirlpool tubs, as well. All four classes' Royal Suites also include separate living room areas. MSC Yacht Club Owner's Suites The largest and most impressive of all MSC's cabins are the Owner's Suites found in the Yacht Club. Offering an impressive 840 to 1,119 square feet — larger than some land-based apartments — plus 269- to 670-square-foot balconies, they're some of the most luxurious rooms afloat. Specific amenities vary by ship, but as an example, Owner's Suites on MSC World Europa offer floor-to-ceiling windows and walk-in closets. These accommodations on both the line's Seaside and World Class vessels also feature bathrooms with separate showers and bathtubs, as well as private whirlpool tubs and separate living room areas. Bottom line Although MSC Cruises' cabin types are straightforward, the line's add-on experiences can complicate things a bit. Overall, what's key to remember is that MSC Cruises offers a wide variety of rooms and pricing to meet just about any budget or style of cruising.
