FOCUS is a 153-foot (46.6m) North American Yachts originally built as Genesis. Designed by Luiz De Basto, she was built in aluminum by North American Yachts and Shipbuilders and delivered in 2002 to a disabled client and has wheelchair access throughout. An interior by Ralph Lauren Home uses African makore mahogany and Tuscan marble throughout the yacht.

FOCUS has a unique, partially enclosed sundeck, her forward sun deck is fully enclosed and is flanked by windows that provide 270-degree views. The aft, exterior sun deck features a Jacuzzi and plentiful sunning space.

Built with an aluminium hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks, she benefits from a semi-displacement hull to provide exceptional seakeeping and impressive speeds. Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (3512B) 12-cylinder 2,250hp engines running at 1925rpm, she comfortably cruises at 12 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 18 knots with a range of up to 5,000 nautical miles from her 21,496 gallon fuel tanks at 13 knots. An advanced stabilisation system on board promises exceptional comfort levels at anchor or on any voyage. Her water tanks store around 2,977 gallons of fresh water. She was built to ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) ✠A1, Yachting Service, AMS classification society rules, and is MCA Compliant.

She was designed by Luiz De Basto , who has designed 38 other superyachts in the BOAT Pro database.

Motor yacht FOCUS is a 46 meter luxury charter yacht launched by North American Yachts and Shipbuilders in 2002 with Naval Architecture by Sergio Cutolo and interior design by Ralph Lauren. Featuring a traditional wood Ralph Lauren interior, this luxury motor yacht also offers a large lift, individually controlled air conditioning, stabilizers at anchor and internet in all staterooms and throughout the yacht.

FOCUS (ex ARGYLL) boasts an impressive master suite on the main upper deck. It has a walk around king sized bed and entertainment center with TV/DVD/individual satellite receiver worldwide as well as an office desk. The en-suite facilities feature “HIS” bathroom with single sink, stall shower and head, and “HERS” bathroom with a single sink, stall shower, bidet and head - all wheel chair accessible. The master suite also features a private aft deck for al fresco dining with hi-lo table, and full wet bar. Mesh shades maximize the privacy on both sides.

Yacht ARGYLL Main Deck: Features a side foyer, galley with bar stool seating, walk around decks and access to a private formal dining room for 10 guests. The yacht’s main salon in decorated in all in mahogany wood and offers a bar, games table, entertainment center with an individual satellite receiver. The aft deck is completely covered and has mesh shades to maximise sun protection. There is al fresco dining for 10 charter guests with a full wet bar and walk around Portuguese decks to a cushioned seating area on her bow. Sky Deck & Sun Deck: The yacht has a sky lounge which is completely enclosed and boasts a panoramic view and full entertainment center. There is also a treadmill and light weights for exercise and a wet bar. She has a sunny and open sundeck with a Spa Pool Pool and deck chairs, outside shower, wet bar and ice-maker.

Design Insight: In Conversation with Focus Yacht Design

For German studio Focus Yacht Design, form and function is equally as important as luxury and elegance; and that's immediately apparent on board their latest project, the 68m (223') superyacht SOARING . Ahead of what's shaping up to be a busy summer season for the charter yacht , we caught up Christian Schaefer, Partner at Focus Yacht Design, to get some insight inside superyacht SOARING.

Delivered by Abeking & Rasmussen last month,  SOARING  is one of the most exciting additions to the Mediterranean yacht charter fleet so far this year.

When she first hit the water at the yard's Lemwerder facilities, the motor yacht made waves with her sleek exterior design. Penned by Focus Yacht Design, the yacht's exterior strikes the perfect balance between classic lines, an elegant profile and a sporty silhouette.

Ahead of her maiden arrival in the Mediterranean, the yacht's interiors have been unveiled for the first time. Also helmed by Focus, her interiors have been thoughtfully styled according to their use. Her social spaces are rich and classic with an overarching Art Deco theme, while her accommodation is light and refreshing by contrast. Deviations from the norm are evident in her Owner's library, which is located on the upper deck forward where you might expect to find the master suite.

Through this attention to detail, Focus has managed to create an on-board ambience that's warm and inviting, yet luxurious and decadent at the same time. We catch up with Christian Schaefer, Partner at Focus Yacht Design, to find out more about what makes SOARING so special.

A gentleman's yacht

You've designed both the interior and exterior of SOARING. Your partner Thomas has previously said; "The opportunity to work on both design spheres allows an integrated and holistic approach." Can you tell me a bit more about how you managed to create a harmony between the two?

Originally we started with a concept for the Exterior profile with which we won the Design Pitch for this project. The Client’s imagination was captured by the idea of a classical yacht with a contemporary appearance. The yacht was meant to have an elegant and sportive appeal while maintaining overall classical lines. We have tried to continue this concept into the interior as well.

There are classical aspects and materials which are combined with a modern design vocabulary. For example, the materials: Dominant veneers are very light and very dark in combination and in contrast to each other. These two color schemes meet and interact with each other and are continued throughout the vessel. Where we have a classical wooden paneling, such as in the Beach Club, we have combined it with modern elements such as inserted pieces of strings.

Did the Owners have any specific ideas for design elements on board SOARING?

From the beginning, the Client was convinced by the holistic approach and concept. Changes to the design throughout the project were kept to a minimum. At the same time, the Client was very enthusiastic about the project and was very closely involved in the design process from day one. 

One feature which we like very much is the backlit onyx wall in the library, where originally we suggested a very modern detail. The backlit Onyx was a suggestion of the Client and together we went to Italy to find the perfect stone for this idea.

Dominant veneers are very light and very dark in combination and in contrast to each other.

What inspired the interior themes of SOARING?

We concentrated on a reduced scope of different materials. All social areas and all staterooms follow individual variations of an overall scheme. However, this scheme is connected to personal views and perspectives so we are not in the position to disclose any insights on these at the moment. 

However, these themes also work without any knowledge of the deeper meaning. You can just enjoy the variation;   e.g. the bamboo wood in the cabin, the sea-lily motifs or the cosmic theme of the Main Salon.

All social areas and all staterooms follow individual variations of an overall scheme.

I love the idea of a library room adjoining the master suite. Was this something the Owner wanted to incorporate?

Originally the yacht was planned primarily for private and family use. The initial design briefing was to develop an Owner’s Deck for someone who is interested in music and literature. 

Elegant exteriors

There's a lot of interesting curves on this yacht- quite a different design to other yachts you've worked on like Plan B and Odessa II. What inspired the exterior design?

We knew that this Owner wouldn‘t be interested in a yacht that could be mistaken with any other yacht which we see in magazines, marinas and on the horizon. For us, it was important to keep the lines elegant, fluent and harmonic and we needed to avoid any contradictions between outer appearance and inner use.

What's very interesting to me is the forward windows on the hull. Have they been designed to give the illusion of being a single piece of glass?

Curiously enough, these windows were already a part of our very first proposal for Abeking & Rasmussen , which unfortunately didn’t come into realization years ago. The main reason for these windows is the desire to prevent individual and/or rectangular windows which would disturb the continuity of the lines.

On Lurssen's Quattroelle, this type of window design has been described as sugar-scoop. Is this the same style of window design?

A number of yacht designs play with unusual shapes. What's important for us is the connection of the individual windows into one overall shape and the integration into the horizontal lines of the yacht.

Designer's Insight

What's your favourite space on board SOARING?

The library on the Owner’s Deck is a very special place. On most other yachts, this room would be the Owner’s suite, which positions a room in which peoples' eyes are mostly closed in a space that actually has the best views.

If you want to enjoy this view during the daytime, say, if you're looking for a quiet ambience for relaxation and contemplation, this is one of the nicest places to be.

Can you tell me a bit about the space on the main deck aft? I can see from renderings there's some kind of glass structure around the dining table- is this a wind deflector?

Obviously, with the Owner’s stateroom on the upper deck aft, the outside deck couldn’t be used for alfresco dining as you might expect to find on comparable yachts. Putting the outside dining on the Main Deck level generated the need for a temporary privacy device, so we integrated this semi-opaque pop-up glass screen.

SOARING is one of the largest interior projects you've worked on. How does it compare and what makes it different to other yachts in your portfolio?

Some think that the individual yachts which a designer works on should be similar, because the designer should look at things in a certain way. In reality, each project differs and evolves through the collaboration with the individual Owner and his particular taste, needs and perspectives.

The future of Focus

What inspired you to get into interior design, specifically for yachts?

We find it challenging to plan in such a confined and complicated environment, where space is restricted, technical requirements are crucial and the luxury world of representation and leisure needs to be combined with the world of operation and functionality. This is very exciting and the constant need for improvement leads to new developments and solutions with every new project.

Did you grow up in the yachting community?

Unfortunately not. But we grew up in the yacht- and shipbuilding community for which Bremen is a hotspot.

Would you say you have a signature style as a design studio?

You will certainly see a unique similarity in the different projects by Focus Yacht Design, although the design is always a product of the Owner’s input and the Designer’s interpretation. For us, it's most important that the projects work as an overall theme and that they are balanced, both aesthetically and functionally. And finally, we must love what we do.

What does the future hold for Focus?

We are working on a number of projects that deal with the question of how tomorrow’s clients will use a yacht, which in our opinion differs from the ways we knew from the past. This includes technical developments caused by the need for sustainability as well as developments in the way people like to use spaces and conduct activities. Variability and the preparation for outstanding experiences and events will play an important role.

Curiously enough, these windows were already a part of our very first proposal for Abeking & Rasmussen.

SOARING offers accommodation for up to 12 guests in six cabins. On-board highlights include a large sundeck with a jacuzzi and spa facilities in the beach club, which also includes a treatment room. 

SOARING will be based in the Mediterranean this summer, cruising around hotspots including Italy and the South of France . She charters from €800,000 p/week (+ expenses).

Shelter island water tests could include silver beach: original focus was on menantic peninsula.

There was no formal vote by the Water Advisory Committee (WAC) to recommend another Town advisory body, the Water Quality Improvement Advisory Board (WQI), to consider funding water testing for residents in the Menantic Peninsula and Silver Beach. Rather, it’s a “sense of the committee” to have Town Engineer Joe Finora make the request at the next WQI meeting scheduled for July 4.

It was a tricky situation for the WAC because Greg Toner, a member of the WQI, said he disagreed with bringing the request for funding to that committee, insisting it wasn’t ready. He has also been outspoken about not wanting to fund future water testing for any residents unwilling to provide full results of their tests to the Town.

As it currently stands, plans call to ask residents who want tests to provide their full data, but not to require it. Two other members of the WAC ­— Ken Pysher and Doug Sherrod — are Silver Beach residents, so they recused themselves from the vote. That left four members who favored moving forward with the request, including Mr. Finora.

When the subject arose last month, the focus was only on the Menantic Peninsula as the next target of testing. But Mr. Sherrod said he thought it unfair to have Silver Beach moved down in consideration.

A brief discussion revealed that members generally agreed with him and even Anita Brush, president of the Menantic Peninsula Homeowners Association, said she favored Silver Beach being included, noting how that neighborhood’s residents had been helpful to residents in her area in determining how to get on the radar of those in the Town for consideration.

Mr. Finora noted that the number of tests the Suffolk County Department of Health Services can handle is expected to fall between 50 and 100 houses, with collection of water samples likely in early fall, and testing of the samples to follow.

But he favored including Silver Beach in the mix, even though it could delay the process into the winter. He has been the point person speaking with Health Department officials to work out arrangements. He will also be the person to carry the request for funding to the WQI.

Silver Beach residents have been proactive and vocal about their concerns with water quality as well as salted well water. Mr. Finora made it clear the tests being discussed deal with potable water, not salted well water.

Ms. Brush said residents in the Menantic Peninsula tend not to speak about their water concerns, hesitant that it would affect their property values. A local realtor has maintained testing and dealing with any problems that might affect the safety of drinking water would likely increase the value of the property.

If the attitude among some Menantic Peninsula residents is let’s not talk about the subject, the role of the WAC needs to be, “Let’s talk about it,” WAC Chairman Peter Grand said.

At this stage, there are no plans for any public water system other than those that exist in the Heights, Dering Harbor and West Neck.

Even if the next step of public testing is funded and reveals mixed results about the quality of water, there are no plans by the town to address solutions. Residents can make their own decisions, just as those in the West Neck Water District did working out an arrangement with the Suffolk County Water Authority, or opting to use bottled water rather than consuming well water that they discover through testing is not potable. 

Testing would be of a wider scope of potential contaminants than the tests conducted last year in the Center triangle.

Moscow’s storied past breathes life into its present

Moscow, the capital of Russia, boasts a rich history that continues to shape its vibrant, modern identity. First mentioned in 1147, Moscow began as a modest settlement but quickly grew into a significant trade and political hub. By the late 13th century, it became the centre of a principality, eventually transforming into the heart of the Grand Duchy of Moscow. Its rise continued solidifying Moscow’s status as the capital of a centralized Russian state. Despite Peter the Great shifting the capital to St. Petersburg in 1712, Moscow remained crucial, playing a key role in Russia’s national identity and resilience, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars in 1812.

Following the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, Moscow resumed its role as Russia’s capital and became the epicentre of the Soviet Union. The city experienced vast industrialization and became a symbol of Soviet power, marked by landmarks such as the Kremlin and the Lenin Mausoleum. Post-Soviet Moscow, emerging after 1991, embraced economic transformation and cultural revitalization, becoming a dynamic metropolis that intertwines historical richness with contemporary life.

Moscow’s history is vividly present in its architecture, such as the Kremlin and St. Basil’s Cathedral, and its cultural institutions like the State Historical Museum and the Bolshoi Theatre. Monuments and public spaces commemorate significant events and figures, creating a living narrative that enriches the daily lives of Muscovites. Historical districts like Kitay-Gorod preserve the city’s heritage while coexisting with modern development. Through its streets, buildings, and public events, Moscow’s past remains an integral part of its vibrant present, making it a city where history and modernity coexist harmoniously.

Moscow is a traveller’s paradise

Moscow today is a vibrant and welcoming city that offers a rich blend of history, culture, and modernity, making it a friendly destination for visitors from around the world. The city’s efficient public transportation system, including its world-renowned metro with opulent stations, ensures easy navigation through its many attractions. Tourists can explore iconic sites such as the Kremlin, Red Square, and Saint Basil’s Cathedral, while also enjoying the city’s diverse culinary scene, which ranges from traditional Russian fare to international cuisines. Moscow’s green spaces, like Gorky Park and the Moscow River embankments, provide tranquil settings for relaxation and recreation.
