I've raced against them and chatted with people who have raced on them. Quick on most points of sail but struggle to live up to their handicap in a decent chop. I am told that accomodation is apparently not very good with not enough berths for the number of crew required to race the thing and those are not in the right areas for weight distribution for the off watch crew either.

Reflex 38 I meant is built by Harley Race Boats and designer: Christian Stimson I was after the following: 1) Sailing quality in various wind conditions and directions? 2) Handicap on IRC ok or not? 3) Build quality, durability? 4) Comparisons with Prima 38? Anything else?

I own a Pronavia 38 - the cruising version of the Reflex 38, speak to www.sailinglogic.co.uk - RORC Yacht of the year this year and RORC school boat of the year for the last 5 years I believe. I cruise in my Pronavia 38 and its also raced, very fast cruising and it brings home the results on the race course - no complaints.

sailed the prototype pronovia about 3yrs ago - didn't perform well against the reflex - heavier v poor quality fit out inside (looked v nice though), hatches leaked, tack on No 1 pulled out etc etc. we were disappointed - hope the production boats got better. again - repeating advice above - go and talk to the folks at sailing logic

Pronavia 38 Review

reflex 38 yacht review

The Reflex 38 got a full makeover as a cruiser-racer – step forward the Pronavia 38. Rupert Holmes reports.

Pronavia-38

Many boats claim to be performance cruisers, but few make the grade. However, it’s instantly obvious that this design is different — it’s a true performance yacht, retaining the well-proven speed and stability characteristics of its predecessor, but with a completely redesigned and fully fitted lightweight interior. The new boat is available in two versions: a standard cruiserracer (as tested), or a high-performance model with a lighter foam laminate interior, plus carbon rig and rudderstock.

The Reflex 38 started life as a brief from Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s Clipper Ventures company. He wanted a fleet of strong racing yachts, with ocean crossing capability, to train crews for roundthe- world voyages. The boat has proved to be one of the most successful designs of its size on the racecourse, both round the cans and offshore. For instance, Sailing Logic’s ‘Puma Logic’ was overall class winner in the IRC 1 RORC Series Championship in 2005, and finished third in class in that year’s Rolex Fastnet Race. In 2006 the same boat finished the selection trials for the Commodores’ Cup in second place, although controversially was not picked for the team.

Part of the original design brief of the Reflex was for high ultimate stability — the design has an AVS of 144 degrees. With the additional displacement of the Pronavia cruising version this is reduced by around five degrees, but is nonetheless still a very respectable figure. The 2.3m draught keel is an iron/lead composite structure, with a large bulb at the base giving a low centre of gravity. Add to that a ballast ratio of near 45 per cent for the raceboat (41 per cent for the cruiser) and you have a very stiff vessel with excellent sail carrying ability. A shoal-draught option of 1.75m is also offered.

The design excels in offshore events — as well successes in the Fastnet, the Reflex 38 has won its division crossing the Atlantic in the ARC and topped the field in the grueling Three Peaks Race four times running.

‘The new boat fulfills the potential the design always had,’ says designer Christian Stimson, ‘It has the benefit of a spacious and comfortable interior, without sacrificing performance.’ In part, this has been possible because the Reflex has a heavy low-tech 12mm plywood interior, so the redesigned interior is of similar weight, despite the huge improvement in comfort and sophistication. However, the extra equipment of the more cruising-oriented design, from a windlass to pressurised water systems, inevitably pushes the weight up. The IRC rating of the Pronavia comes out around 1.055, compared to the typical figure for a Reflex of around 1.067-1.069.

Rickard Eskilsson and Anders Ekstrand, who bought the Swedish boatyard six years ago, developed the Pronavia idea. Their search for a more up to date design led them to Christian Stimson’s Reflex 38; and they bought the moulds from Cowes-based builder Nigel Harley and commissioned stylist Roel de Groot to design the interior.

One of the key attributes of the Reflex 38 that has not changed is its structural strength. The laminate was engineered by SP Technologies to provide a balance between robust charter boat and performance racer, including a requirement to absorb the very considerable forces of running aground at 10 knots. The engineers’ calculations were proved accurate when a Reflex ran aground at speed on the wreck of the ‘Varvassi’ off The Needles — a hulk that claims raceboats almost every year. The impact left a large cauliflowershaped dent in the front of the foil, but incredibly there was no damage to the laminate structure or keel bolts.

Our test boat, ‘Seawolf’, was owned by Dave Latham of Atlantic Charters. The boat was based in the Solent area during summer 2006, before moving to Gibraltar for the winter season. Dave chose the Pronavia following a year’s experience of owning a Reflex 38. He was also drawn by the Swedish yard’s flexibility in incorporating his own requests into the build, yet the cost worked out around 20 per cent cheaper for a comparable specification. ‘Seawolf’ is fitted with almost all the available optional cruising comforts such as boarding ladder, cockpit shower and spray hood.

Pronavia 38

Externally, the main differences between the Reflex and Pronavia are in the cockpit area, where the seats extend further aft and the coamings are more rounded. Additionally the Reflex’s big wheel is eschewed in favour of twin wheels and the entire area is decked in teak. The steering positions from each side are nothing short of excellent, and there’s no evidence that the smaller wheels result in high steering loads feeding through to the helm.

Deck gear is by Lewmar and Spinlock, with an upgrade to Harken available as an option. A German mainsheet system is led to winches just forward of each wheel, where they can be reached from the helm if short-handed, or by a dedicated mainsheet trimmer. Under-deck halyards help to create a neat and uncluttered layout, boosted by flush-fitting hatches. The coach roof does not unduly hinder deck work and the conventional alloy toe rail is cut flat aft of the shrouds for comfortable hiking — overall it’s a better proposition for round the cans racing than that of many popular cruiser-racers. There’s a liferaft locker under the sole at the aft end of the cockpit, with space for a few fenders etc, but otherwise locker space is restricted on three-cabin boats. Two cabin models, however, have a large cockpit locker aft of the heads compartment.

The keel-stepped double-spreader 9/10ths fractional rig is alloy on cruiser-racer versions and carbon on the all-out racer. ‘Seawolf’ is equipped with cruising laminate sails, by Royal Sails of Sweden. Many Reflexes gain a small rating advantage by sailing with a maximum 130 per cent genoa, although Stimson recommends a 140 per cent headsail for the Pronavia: ‘It’s needed because of the extra weight — about threequarters of a tonne — of the cruising gear compared to a stripped out boat.’

On the water

Our test took place on the Solent, in 12-15 knots of breeze, with frequent gusts to 20 knots. Upwind the helm has a delightful positive feel and the boat falls easily into a deep groove, even without crew on the rail. There’s every indication that the boat will fulfill the polars, which show roughly seven knots of boatspeed and tacking through 70 degrees in these conditions.

Bearing off and hoisting the spinnaker the boat again showed a good turn of speed, and excellent control. When spinnaker reaching the boat remained under complete control with no sign of broaching, even in the gusts. At all times she readily responded to the helm to bear away, with the rudder retaining a good grip on the water throughout.

Two basic layouts are offered, with a choice of two or three cabins, and a degree of customisation is possible. There’s intelligent stowage space throughout the boat — it’s plentiful and wellplanned — and the general feel is light and airy. Granted, there are more spacious 38-footers, but none will match the performance and handling of this boat. The finish throughout is also worthy of mention — the mahogany joinery is executed to a high standard and a careful effort has been made to avoid any exposed fibreglass.

Right forward in two of the versions is a large owner’s cabin, with a 2.14m double berth. The spacious saloon and chart table areas, to port of the main cabin, are identical in all versions, as is the port side aft guest cabin.

A two-cabin layout has a generously-sized heads compartment aft to starboard, with a truly excellent galley stretching along the whole starboard side of the main cabin. This has an abundance of worktop space, as well as huge, but well-organised, stowage capacity. Some linear galleys are a nightmare to work at sea on the ‘wrong’ tack, but the custom centre-line saloon bench that Dave specified for ‘Seawolf’ offers something to brace against and makes the galley totally usable at sea.

The standard three-cabin layout has a second, smaller, aft cabin to starboard, and a smaller heads compartment immediately ahead of this. ‘Seawolf’ has a slightly different arrangement, with the heads compartment forward of the mast at the expense of a smaller forecabin. This has the  advantage of allowing a little more space in the  starboard aft cabin, as well as maintaining a similarly-sized galley to that of the two-cabin boat.

Pronavia 38 Review: Verdict

With 10 boats sold already, the Pronavia concept is  proving undeniably popular — with the marriage of  the Reflex 38’s race-winning heritage and the new  interior arrangements, this is a genuine dual-role  performance design with the potential to win races  both round the cans and offshore. Combining  cruising comforts with the ability to plane in wind  speeds over 20 knots is certainly appealing.

When sailed short-handed the boat’s high  stability and sail-carrying ability will prove a real  asset — a brisk, but relaxed, pace can be  maintained with few sail changes.

Initially the boat has been deliberately undervalued to get attention and represents  excellent value for money. Pricing will increase  year on year so residual values are not a worry  for buyers.

Reflex 38 wins Three Peaks

Yachting World

  • June 28, 2003

Spirit of Barmouth has won the Magellan Three Peaks Yacht Race

Spirit of Barmouth (Reflex 38) and her relentless crew of sailors and runners has won the 2003 Magellan Three Peaks Yacht Race.

In brilliant sunshine, Andy Sanderson and Tony Hodgson ran down from Ben Nevis and raced over the finish line on Wednesday to complete an impressive win for ‘Spirit of Barmouth’. The pair had taken only 4 hours and 6 minutes on the run up and down Ben Nevis and according to Sanderson “were on a real high at the top”. Relieved that it was all over they jumped into the lock basin for a celebratory dip!

Tony only came into the race three weeks ago as a late replacement. Though he was a runner, he had never done any sailing before.

This will be a popular win, as the Reflex 38 carried the name of Welsh town were the race starts, and is organised from. Two of the crew, Ian Hudson and Dave Bird, both from Barmouth and on the Race Committee were overjoyed. This was a second victory for both of them. “We did this for Barmouth, we’ve won it for the town,” said Bird.

No stranger to this Race, the Reflex 38 has raced this course a number of times. This year ‘Spirit of Barmouth’s’ owner Geoff West, from Cowes on the Isle of Wight, was skipper and, with a committed crew, helmed her to victory. It was his third win in the race.

Geoff managed to sail ‘Spirit of Barmouth’ into Fort William with no engine to drop off the two runners and was surprised at the team’s success. “I didn’t think I was going to win it this year.” He added, “The runners on Hellefix looked so good and their boat speed is the same as ours so I wondered where we could beat them.”

Crew member, Ian Hudson had skippered the same yacht to win in the race two years ago, again in very calm conditions, and it was his suggestion to take an alternative course, through the Sound of Islay, which helped secure their win. It’s a tactic that has never succeeded in the race before, but this time it worked spectacularly well as their nearest challenger the Dutch yacht ‘Hellefix’ was left half a day behind.

Geoff explained, “No one has won this Race at the first attempt as there is a lot to learn. We were constantly coming to choices on tides and tactics and thinking we’d tried this last year and it worked OK. Then Ian suggested doing something different by going through the Sound of Islay and we had to think about that! It nearly didn’t work and had it failed we could have lost the race. Ian was a bit quiet at the time knowing his head was on the block.”

“Without using the oars we’d have been swept back into the Sound so those last few metres of rowing were the crux point of the race for us, and luckily we made it.”

Having won the race in storm Force winds last year his skills as a light wind sailor came to the fore this time. Describing their approach to the Corran Narrows, which come right at the end of the race, Hudson said, “It was flat calm and we couldn’t feel a breath of wind. The wind gauge read zero but Geoff had us moving at half a knot with the spinnaker. He was catching some breeze in the very top part of the sail, trying to keep momentum and we were all staying quite still on the deck so as not to disturb him. We were even whispering to each other. He did the same in the Sound of Islay to get us through. It was very skilful sailing.” Asked if he wanted to come back after his third win West just said, “Yes, of course.”

Clipper Ventures to sell off Reflex 38s

  • September 10, 2002

Clipper Ventures has announced plans to sell its Corporate Sailing Division and its ten-strong racing fleet of Clipper Reflex 38 yachts...

Clipper Ventures plc, the AIM listed marine events company chaired by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, has announced plans to sell its Corporate Sailing Division and its ten-strong racing fleet of Clipper Reflex 38 yachts.

The corporate events and training division, launched in 1999, organise corporate hospitality, training and regatta events in and around the UK aboard the charter fleet of Clipper Reflex 38s, designed and built in the Isle of Wight by Christian Stimson and Harley Race Boats.

The sale is part of a five-year development strategy which will enable Clipper Ventures to focus wholly on its two key round-the-world events, the Clipper Race and Around Alone. The strategy will see Clipper positioned as the UK’s leading marine events company and includes plans to build a fleet of twelve 68ft, 18-berth Ed Dubois designed boats, costing an estimated ‘6m.

William Ward, Chief Executive for Clipper Ventures, said:

“This transaction will allow us to concentrate our abilities and will strengthen the position of Clipper Ventures as the UK’s leading organiser of round the world yacht races.”

“Focussing on our core business of round the world yacht racing is a most important step in our development strategy and is in-keeping with our commitment towards making the Clipper 2005 race the most international yacht race yet.”

Review of Prima 38

Basic specs..

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar 3GM30 diesel engine at 28.0 hp (20 kW), which gives a max speed about 6.3 knots.

The transmission is a saildrive.

The fuel tank which is made of stainless steel has a capacity of 90 liters (23 US gallons, 19 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Prima 38 is 2.10, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

Prima 38 holds one CE certification:

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.9 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Prima 38 is about 267 kg/cm, alternatively 1496 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 267 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1496 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

2021 Reflex Reefrunner

  • By Jim Hendricks
  • Updated: February 16, 2021

Reflex Reefrunner out in the ocean

As boat prices climb, one brand is bending the curve downward. Reflex America imports components from Reflex, New Zealand, and then assembles its boats in Southern California. The 24-foot-10-inch Reflex Reefrunner starts at $84,900.

Reflex Reefrunner port-side door

The Reefrunner performed well with a single 200 hp Mercury V-6 FourStroke outboard. Top speed was 41.5 mph, and it posted outstanding fuel economy—3.73 mpg at 4,000 rpm and 27.6 mph. Hydraulic steering made handling easy as we carved turns at speed. The deep-V hull sliced smoothly through choppy waters.

Interior and Accessories

This model features a quasi-pilothouse with a full-height tempered-glass windshield and sliding side windows, plus a cuddy cabin with a pair of 7-foot-long berths, portlight hatch and portable marine toilet. The hardtop features a manually operated shade extension for the cockpit, an overhead hatch, and a row of six rod holders.

Reflex Reefrunner cockpit

The helm on the starboard-side features an adjustable pedestal-mounted bucket seat, and a 23-inch-wide helm panel with a pair of Simrad GO7 combo displays, Mercury VesselView 403 display, Fusion Apollo stereo control head (controlling a pair of Fusion marine speakers) and Icom M220 VHF radio—all as standard. A companion bucket seat resides to port, facing the pocket door to the cuddy cabin.

The cockpit features an aft-facing seat on the forward port side, plus a foldout transom bench seat, transom livewell, ski pylon, removable cutting board, and undergunwale rod racks. Hatches in the aft area allow inspection of bilge rigging, and snap-in cockpit carpeting is also standard.

Reflex Reefrunner deep-V hull

Step through the passage-way on the port side of the transom and deploy the telescoping stainless-steel boarding ladder to take a dip. To drop and retrieve the anchor, the Reefrunner uses a stainless-steel drum winch inside the anchor locker. The rode feeds over a roller on the integral pulpit. A stainless-steel rail wraps around the bow for safety when going forward.

How We Tested

  • Engine: Single Mercury 200 hp V-6 FourStroke
  • Drive/Prop: Outboard/Mercury Enertia 15″ x 15″ 3-blade stainless steel
  • Gear Ratio: 1.85:1 Fuel Load: 50 gal. Crew Weight: 590 lb.

High Points

  • Suggested retail price is not likely to deliver sticker shock.
  • Double 7-foot-long cabin berths are well-suited to overnighting.
  • Enclosed helm area will keep you dry and comfortable.
  • Walkways along the side to the bow are narrow, but handrails on the hardtop offer places to hold on.
  • Windshield wipers are an option you should order for a better forward view when taking spray.

Toughest Competitor

The Striper 230 Walkaround OB with the Alaska Package ($87,868 with a Mercury 200 Verado and similar electronics) offers comparable pilothouse helm protection and overnighting accommodations. Though about 2 feet shorter, it features a higher prow, greater fuel capacity, and easier access to the bow area.

Broker's Comments

£45,500 + vat and with only 10 of these ever made and this has to rank amongst the best of them, fully MCA Cat 2 coded with everything needed to race, she does cut extremely swiftly through the water and excellent use of the interior make her very spacious down below. She has just undergone an interior refurb as well as various upgrades etc including a new Pushpit. These boat details are subject to contract. Note: Offers on the asking price may be considered.

  1. Reflex 38 Any Opinions please

  2. Clipper Reflex 38

August 28, 2000. Conceived as a competitive One-Design Offshore Raceboat, the Clipper Reflex 38 is compliant with all the ISO regulations for sailing charter yachts. This makes the Clipper Reflex 38 unique in that compliance was fundamental to the design concept, and no other raceboat attains this as a one-design class.

  3. REFLEX 38

Design #25. Commissioned by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston Executive Chairman of Clipper Ventures LTD. Reported sail area includes main + 135% genoa. - Main: 45.51m² - 135% Genoa: 40.94m² - 110% Genoa: 29.16m² - Spinnaker: 114.10m² The Reflex was relaunched as the Pronavia 38 in 2004 with a completely new, more cruiser friendly interior.

  4. Pronavia 38 Review

Pronavia 38 Review: Verdict. With 10 boats sold already, the Pronavia concept is proving undeniably popular — with the marriage of the Reflex 38's race-winning heritage and the new interior arrangements, this is a genuine dual-role performance design with the potential to win races both round the cans and offshore.

  5. Reflex 38's

The main attraction of the Reflex is the price. The asking price is £42,000 + VAT. That includes two sets of sails and all the charter gear. At that price it seems to be a lot of boat for the money. Agree that other boats may be more preferable, but the budget is not limitless, which rules out the likes of the HOD plus the Elan 37.

  8. The Yacht

The Reflex 38 is a brilliant performer on the race circuit and was originally designed as a one-design offshore race boat. The Reflex 38 or 'clipper' is compliant with all the ISO regulations for sailing charter yachts and is unusual because it was designed specifically to meet these regulations. The Reflex 38 is a very stylish yacht which is ...
