The Yacht Week Greece Day 3 – Our Poros Thirst

After more than 24 hours on sea, we returned to land and docked on the island of Poros at 9am in the morning.

We then enjoyed a free morning including walks along Poros’ scenic waterfront eating pita gyros and spanakopita, refreshing ourselves with an ice cold frappés and freddos, and riding on our choice of ATVs, scooters, or electric bikes.

With an ATV costing €45 per ATV fitting up to 2 folks each, we were given two and a half hours to explore the island of Poros (it only takes an hour to see the whole island).

We saw a monastery from the outside that wouldn’t let us in because of what we were (not) wearing…

… and the archaeological remains of the Poseidon Sanctuary:

…and recalled that 4 of us also had rode ATVs and buggies together 15 months ago in Bora Bora !

With plenty of time left after a full roundtrip around the island, we drove back to fit in a small hike down to a secret cove for a swim:

At 11:30am we returned to our yachts and relaxed for the afternoon before a water taxi ride to Love Bay .

There we got a few bottles and played beer pong for an afternoon beach party, where our very own Lyla won the Yacht Week’s limbo contest!

I dare say I held my own and didn’t sit out limbo this time.

We then continued the day party for a few more hours.

…before returning to change for our night activities, which included this sunset as our backdrop

Instead of joining the others at Oasis, we instead got our own family home cooked meal at Apagio :

Partying late into the night while still on land, the group then moved on to Malibu for late night dancing on top of their infamous dance barrels. This is us looking a little more presentable beforehand.

You can choose from 10 available weeks from the end of May until the first week of September. This route begins and ends in Athens, where you will get to visit the Acropolis overlooking the city below.

There is a good dose of partying thrown in with the infamous Yacht Week circle raft (think boutique floating festival), day parties at Cavo Bianco, and beach parties on sandy beaches, complete with cocktail-sipping DJs.

In addition, there are wellness elements to enjoy in the form of sunset hikes and water volleyball to keep the hangover at bay.

The emerald waters of the Greek islands are famed for their marine wildlife, so dolphin spotting is almost certainly something you can bank on.

To keep it as balanced as possible, I’ve further compared each of their package tiers, and prices are per person (p.p)

With Athens about an hour away, Poros is an ideal base from which to explore the city’s ancient offerings – and the pace of life here is much less hectic. Sailing down the narrow straits between Poros and the Peloponessos feels like sailing down a river or one of Venice’s canals. Boats are anchored in forested coves, swimmers splash about in the clear water and people sip drinks and tuck into food at the tavernas lining the shore. Poros town and Galati bustle with life and have some great artisanal shops and restaurants. And when you want some tranquillity, all you have to is wander down to your yacht and recline in luxury.

Russian Bay, five kilometres from Poros town, is a spectacular place to drop anchor and explore the ruins of a 17th-century Russian dockyard, set right on the beach. Small and secluded Love Bay beach, set among trees and with clear emerald water, is another stunning place in which to drop anchor. For a larger, more organised beach, Askeli is a swimmer’s paradise.

Wonderful, well-organised flotilla sailing in Greece

We booked the Argolic Gulf & Eastern Peloponnese flotilla for a week in September, through SunScape. The Sunscape and Greek Sails teams were excellent throughout. Arrangements went smoothly. Greek Sails have a good network of local contacts and arranged transfers between Athens and Poros without a hitch. The boats are all owned by Greek Sails, and kept in good condition and order, and there's a very responsive team available to deal with any problems. One boat tore a sail and the team worked through the night to get a new sail to the harbour 4 hours away, first thing in the morning, and fit it so the crew could continue sailing. Panos and Terence, our flotilla skippers, were great; careful with the boats, attentive to people's needs and experience. They would consider the prevailing conditions from day to day and plan the route accordingly; the wind was often light in the morning, but we generally had a strong afternoon's sailing each day. Having taken flotilla holidays before, I'm well aware of the sharp practices that operators can employ. Hidden expenses, nightly group meals at overpriced restaurants... there was none of that! Every port we stopped at had several very reasonably-priced local tavernas, and we had a lovely week with local food and jugs of wine! Without question, I would book Greek Sails again.

Thoroughly enjoyable one week family (half term) flotilla from Poros, on a Sun Odyssy 469. Two adults and 3 children (15, 13, 11) at the end of October 2022. We booked through Jeremy of Sailing Choices who was very knowledgable and provided invaluable advice throughout. Our yacht, a four cabin four heads Sun Odyssy 469, was excellent, immaculately clean and very well maintained, the attention to detail is impressive. Greek Sails were very helpful throughout, suggesting an hotel in Piraeus, collecting us from the ferry stop and even taking my wife by car to a larger supermarket for provisioning on Sunday morning. They also organised our return transfer to the airport, via a sightseeing stop at the Corinth canal (which had all the children impressed) - everything went without a hitch. The sailing area was good and many thanks go to Isis (the owner's daughter) who, as flotilla skipper was friendly, chatty and happy; she and her sister made everyone feel welcome and made the week very enjoyable. It was a great holiday and we are all looking forward to our next one.

Fabulous holiday on a bareboat charter from Poros. Greek Sails were very helpful and we chartered a 44 ft yacht from them for a week. We had a great week thank you all at Greek Sails.

A bit of a mixed bag compared to other companies we’ve been with. We’ve done about 15 trips all over the world, about half of which were flotillas First the good - Communication when booking was good, they held 2 bookings for a few days while we were finalising flights around exams finishing, etc - Yachts were very well maintained, clean, no issues Now the not so good - If you want to pay by credit card there is a surcharge, we opted for bank transfer with no surcharge but you need to transfer to an account in Belgium (and when we paid the balance we couldn’t get hold of Greeksails for a week to confirm it had been received, not ideal) - We booked a paddleboard a few months before, but when we arrived our booking had been lost and there were no paddleboards left. I told them to check our emails and made it clear they needed to come up with a plan, which they did eventually did - When arriving in port the lead skipper shouted instructions which must have really annoyed other boats, on other trips we’ve done they use the radio, low volume, far more peaceful and relaxed, esp for others - We had a ‘beach party’, but had very little instruction as to what was expected, it started after sunset, not ideal - We had no other informal activities , on other flotillas we’ve had regattas, dingy races, egg drop competitions , group dinners, etc, etc, none of that was organised - By far the biggest issue for us was at checkout, boat was checked by Greeksails on the Friday when we were off the boat and only the kids were onboard (we were a few hundred meters away, easily contactable on whatsapp, and should really have been there), then on the morning of departure we went to the office to get our credit card slip and were told we needed the boat papers. Back to the boat we went and couldn’t find the boat papers even tho we were sure we saw them the previous evening. Greeksails made it clear this was a big problem (understandable), so we searched our luggage , searched very nook and crannie on the yacht, etc (at their request), nothing. About an hour later it turned out while we were at the office one of their staff went onto our boat and removed the papers and didn’t tell anyone. I may have been less annoyed if they had apologised , but they continued to blame us, and only apologised after I sent 2 follow up emails after the trip suggesting they apologise. I’ve used Sunsail many times with mostly good experiences, a few other companies with varied experiences, and recently used sailinghoilidays who were excellent. Clearly Greeksails have excellent reviews, but unfortunately my experience was not as positive.

Great week sailing from Poros on our first flotilla. Isus and Panos made tricky boat handling easy and provided helpful advice on each stop. Sea turtles and dolphins added to the fun. Beach party topped off the week with superb cooking by Panos. Panos - larger than life personality- dedicated to making sure everyone had a good time including those new to sailing on our yacht. Mixed sailing weather but great breeze on final day. Boat as described and well equipped for a weeks cruising.

We booked through Jeremy at Sailing choices for a flotilla holiday as a couple in June 2022. As I have never sailed the med before, Jeremy, offered sound advise and some valuable tips, including sailing areas, transfers and accommodation as we decided to stay in Poros for a few days after our charter. Definitely worth using his skills and knowledge as a booking agent. We decided to charter a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 349 (2014) through Jeremy using Greek Sails on a flotilla holiday sailing the Argolic Gulf. I found this more reassuring as I had never tried ‘med mooring’ before. We arrived in Poros and made our way to Greek Sails base. We were met by Kalean who was one of the guys who looked after the yachts, shore side. He was very friendly knowledgeable and was able to answered all my questions. He gave a very good boat brief too. The organisation before and during our trip was smooth and very well done. All staff were friendly, honest and accommodated requests; making sure everyone was comfortable. The yacht itself was well equipped, clean and in very good condition. We had a meet and greet on the first night meeting the other ‘yachties’ on the flotilla (9 boats). Our lead boat was crewed by Isis and Paros who both had a great knowledge of the area we were to sail and were friendly, very good natured and always approachable. The following morning, we were giving a brief on our destination for that day (Erminos). Hazards along the way were identified, along with good anchorage locations if we wanted to stop for lunch. Procedures for med mooring were explained to us too. Upon arrival the lead boat crew were on the quay side waiting for us. Instruction was given as to how far out we should be before dropping anchor, all went nice and smoothly, what was my concerns for! This same procedure would be adopted over the following days; visiting Leonidiou, Navplion and Astros. Our favourite probably being Asatros. On our last night out, we formed a raft in a sheltered bay on Dokos and had a yacht party. All in all, we covered 152 miles over the week. A good proportion was under sail along with some ‘motor sailing too. I was warned by a friend that 'on flotillas' the lead crew try to get you to meet up each night at a certain restaurant. Apart from the first night and the last night we were left to our own devices. Reflecting back, I would have preferred the option of a suggested meet every other night so there would be more mixing with the other boat crews. However, all in all we had a fantastic week. If we sail this area again, I will definitely be using Greek Sails (through Sailing Choices) as they are a top draw family outfit. Dave & Sharon UK

Directy opposite the Peloponnese, separated only by a small channel of sea, lies Poros, one of the most interesting islands of the Saronic gulf .  Poros was formed after the eruption of Methana resulting in two main areas, Spheria and Calabria. Today the main town of Poros occupies Spheria while Calabria is filled with hundreds of pine trees surrounding the famous clock tower of the island. This island is immensely green due to the color of the trees, which from the distance create an exquisite image of its hill connecting with the sea.

Considered by many to be the friendliest yacht destination in Greece as well as having a very rich naval history, dating back to the 18th and 19th century. In the past, Russia had created a shipyard to horde their fleet in order to support Greece during their wars against Turkey. The remains of this dockyard are still present today for visitors to see as well as a very pleasant beach available to enjoy.

Poros is a very hospitable island and has a reputation for treating guests exceptionally well with respect and politeness. Top class fish, affordable prices and extraordinary service are all things you will experience upon your visit. A highly efficient road network allows you to drive around easily and access most locations.

Not to mention all the fun to be had while on a  sailing yacht in nice calm weather, unique scenerary and incredible array of little bays available for mooring.  Poros is an island which will have you in absolute bliss!

3 TOP THINGS TO DO IN POROS

Built in 1922, the clock tower is one of the islands most iconic structures which can be seen from almost anywhere on the island. Standing tall in the center of the island, dominating the surrounding view. A walk from the waterfront to the tower might be more draining than you think, however once you arrive at the top surely the reward will be well worth it. The view is spectacular and an incredible breeze revitalizes and enchants you. This being the reason it is such a popular location for well-known photographers trying to capture the atmosphere and incredible views experienced here.

Don’t forget to take a photo of your sailing yacht while you are at the top! The best time to visit would be during the late afternoon or close to sunset, due to the high temperatures present during the day.

Being close to Athens, one can imagine everything is a little more sophisticated here. This has no effect whatsoever on the relaxed atmosphere and vibe of the island which welcomes you with its colorful gardens and neoclassical buildings. Walk in the main street and watch the yachts mooring along the way, stop and dine in one of the many restraunts available on the seafront (ask your skipper for the best option according to your preferences) and finally return back to town for a fun night out!

Poros is quite lively at night and provides all types of alternatives to enjoy in the evening. For those not interested in fancy party nights, we encourage you to sample a cocktail at one of the many sea view bars or cafes. Taking full advantage of your yacht sailing vacation!

Our general and friendly advice for all our yacht sailing guests is to experience the essence of each location. Meaning that the true spirit and beauty of the islands can be found in the people, food, history and sights which is a much richer experience onboard a yacht. 

Poros has nice flat surfaced roads which allow you to visit most places and take in the aromas of all the natural suroundings. Also, granting accessibility to amazing views and hidden gems scattered around the island.

There are many car and quad rentals available in order to spend half the day driving around getting acquainted with the locals, testing out less mainstream restraunts and possibly discovering some hidden surprises or beaches.

In my opinion, Poros is a wonderful island! It might not be the most traditional of the Saronic islands, however surely the most ideal when visiting by sailing yacht or catamaran. It is truly worth dropping anchor in "Love bay" and spending a night away from the harbor. Offering you the luxury to wake up in a protected bay, surrounded by beauty and taking a morning dive in crystal clear waters!

“Great family sailing experience in the Saronic gulf”

For our first week-long, family sailing-experience in Greece, we had rented a smaller boat ( Oceanic 37 ) from Yachtsailing.gr. with a skipper. As beginners, we were advised to sail in the Saronic gulf instead of the Cyclades, (which can be very windy), which turned out to be an excellent advice. We had a wonderful experience with the boat, the skipper, Panos, who was an excellent skipper and a very good person for us, and with everything concerning booking and arranging the trip. We would highly recommend this company and this trip for families, and we will surely go again.

Beaches worth visiting

Askeli beach.

Considered one of the most popular beaches but better to be visited if you are anchored in the bay. The reason being the large crowds and cars trying to access the beach. So the best way to enjoy the exceptional waters is privately on your yacht, not having to deal with the crowded seashore.

Russian bay

An excellent option to anchor, sit back and relax. Very well protected from the northern winds with exceptional scenary, loads of beautiful pine trees and beautiful serene waters. A truly picturesque bay with historical significance and interest.

As the name depicts this is a very romantic area with emerald waters sitting below hundreds of pine trees! Definitely one of the best beaches while sailing and looking for a revitalizing dive or swim.

Sites worth visiting

Visit the monastery of zoodochos pigi.

Situated near a small canyon surrounded by trees, only 4km from town is a lovely monestary, which was built in 1720. Probably the most significant religious sights on the island. During the Greek Libereation War of 1821 it was of substantial importance. Providing spiritual assistance to the freedom fighters, as well as social and financial aid. All this is said to have provided the support needed to win the war.

Visit the islet ‘Daskaleio’

There is no way you will miss “Daskaleio” as you sail towards the island of Poros. The small islet located in the center of the sea will mesmerize you with its presence. A small white church is located here and covers almost all the surrounding land which is not touching the sea.

Castle of Bourtzi

Built in a stragetic location, covering most of the land on a small islet, this area was used by the locals to supervise the vessels invading Poros from Hydra. Currently, it is only accessible by swimming or boat. So if you are interested, take a quick stop to visit the region.

Local tastes of Poros

Every morning the fishermen of Poros gather in the port to sell their catches from the previous evening. If one of our cooks is present onboard, we encourage asking them to select the type of fish you desire and have it prepared with our own unique recipes. Proving to be a perfect lunch alternative, away from the harbor and relaxing privately in beautiful surroundings.

Citrus fruits

With so many trees and natural scenery everywhere its hard to imagine Poros having a lack of fresh fruit available. Citrous fruits are indigenous to the island and present in juices served by many cafes and restaurants in town. There is also a wide selection of other delicious fruits available to pick from.

For 2 consecutive years we’ve proudly partnered with the world's biggest techno label Drumcode. We ventured into the unknown with Adam Beyer and his team, successfully bringing techno from underground clubs, to the seas of Croatia. This enabled both brands to tap into completely new audiences, positively altering brand reputation on both sides.

We partnered with the Swedish fashion brand for 2 consecutive years hosting a group of creators from all over Europe in Croatia and in Greece. The collaboration enabled NA-KD to shoot their summer collection in gorgeous settings in the Mediterranean, whilst both brands benefited from the exposure of the creators/influencer and owned channels.

We had GoPro out on the seas with us hosting a creator/influencer yacht as well as giving them branded exposure on our yachts and yacht flags. We created endless amounts of content together that were used on both channels during the year, as well as exposure from the influencers/creators we collaborated with.

Environment / Activism

Aegean Rebreath

Funded by local divers in Greece, this grassroots non-profit have made it their mission to clean up the sea beds of the Aegean Sea. Last year, they pulled over one tonne’s worth of marine litter off the Poros Marina alone, helping to preserve the natural habitat of marine wildlife.

Your first journey will be a short and laid back; enjoy the breeze as you head out into open waters and catch your first glimpse of the fragrant pine forests of Poros. As two separate islands joined together by a bridge, these islands boast incredibly lush, green backdrops and a selection of pretty beaches. Strolling around the streets, you can get your first impression of the small family-run businesses which appear at every corner and the attractive neoclassical architecture.

Relax and savor the tranquility

Making your way to Hydra through the morning, there will be ample time for you to enjoy the warmth of the Greek sun as you take in the scenery drifting past you. The island of Hydra is still within the boundaries of the Saronic Islands and is a very popular stop off for luxury charter yachts .

Away from cruise ships and mainstream tourists, the island of Hydra is noticeably quieter than many other islands you will visit because there are no cars allowed here. The only vehicles you will see are rubbish disposal related. Walking through the streets you can once again enjoy the charm of the local people and their businesses, which highly depend on the visitors to the island. 

Cruising around the coast on your motor yacht  you will see many natural harbors to anchor down in to enjoy the small beaches and quiet walks through the vegetation. An added bonus to the beauty of Hydra is that there are also some natural springs on the island. Ideal if you feel the need for some revitalisation. Finish off your afternoon of exploration by dining at one of the local tavernas and trying some of the exquisite local cuisine, before then retiring to your luxury charter yacht to move on to your next destination.

An archeologist's dream

Moving over into the borders of the Cyclades , the island of Delos is one like no other you have seen before. Despite being largely vacant and barren in places, this Greek island is believed to be the mythological birthplace of Apollo. Highly important to the Greek people, Delos is treated with every respect of a religious monument and is often the destination of pilgrimages.

Archaeological sites are easy to find on Delos with a wide range of ruins for you to explore. One of the most popular historical sites to visit on the island is The Terrace Of Lions. Dedicated to Apollo himself, 7 lions still stand today as they guard the Sacred Way. The importance of these lions is comparable to the Sphinx found in Egypt. Another popular site to visit is the House of Dionysus. A picture-perfect appearance, the House of Dionysus features a selection of standing pillars and some partially intact mosaics.

After an interesting morning of meeting various historical monuments from the Greek past, have a break for lunch on board your luxury charter yacht. The delicious combination of olives, feta cheese, sun-dried tomatoes and raki will prepare you for an afternoon on the waves. Try some windsurfing or break out the jet skis to burn off some steam and slowly make your way across the waters to your next destination of Mykonos.

Prepared for some serious fun

Start off your day in Mykonos with a big hearty breakfast to keep you going. This destination is well known for having an incredible night scene so pace yourself throughout the day to prepare for the evening's festivities.

On arrival at the island, you can take some time to relax on the popular sandy beaches or jump straight into exploring the terrain by moving up into the hills to see the 16th-century windmills. Most of the windmills were built by the Venetians but some construction work was not completed until the early 20th century. 

As the afternoon draws to a close, indulge in a delicious and fulfilling meal at M-eating or Bill and Goo Gastronomy Project before heading into the heart of Mykonos for a night to remember. Being completely spoiled for choice on the nightlife scene, you can dance the night away in one of the local clubs with resident DJs and tribute acts or head to a chic and classy cocktail bar to work your way through the list of alcoholic concoctions. We recommend that you visit Principote Panormos or Nammos if you really want a night to remember.

As you rest up from your exciting night in Mykonos, you can have a well-deserved lay-in before a refreshing swim in the waters of the picture-postcard island of Santorini . 

As you disembark onto the island itself, you will notice that the beaches on Santorini are a shade of grey, rather than luscious golden colours found on other islands nearby. However, white beach provides recognisable bays where you and your guests can go snorkelling or use your waters toys.

After feasting on some local cuisine at Bellonias Villas, you and your guests will visit the archaeological site of Akrotiri for a history lesson on Greece's Bronze age. Following this, you will venture towards the town to see the famed blue-domed churches and whitewashed buildings along the steep streets.

Stop off in some of the family-run businesses along the way to pick up some Greek specialities including locally produced wine, which you can also find by visiting Santo winery. 

Experience Greek hospitality at its finest

After two exciting days on some of the most popular islands of Greece, your day in Symi offers some time to recuperate and enjoy the more traditional side of Greek culture and lifestyle. 

To make the most of the island, make your way to the town of Yialos to witness some of the exciting summer festivals. Held every year from July to September, the Symi Festival consists of a series of free open-air concerts, dances and many other social events, all held in the town square. Enjoy at your leisure and take a quick tour of some of the beautiful churches before returning to your luxury charter yacht.

Despite not having a huge amount of activities available, the island of Symi has some charming communities around the island who are warm and welcoming to all who visit. Anchor down at the quaint town of Galios to enjoy a long evening of indulgent hospitality and a setting which shows what traditional Greece is really like. From the pastel-hued buildings to the buzzy tavernas lining the harbor, this is one stop you won't forget in a hurry.

As the largest of the Dodecanese Islands in Greece, Rhodes is undoubtedly one of the highest sought after escapes in the area. Even before anchoring down in the medieval harbor you can see what it is that attracts thousands of visitors every week of the year.

After your time of unwinding in Symi, the bustling activity on Rhodes plunges you back into holiday mode as you venture through the winding streets and find some souvenir bargains, en route to your chosen restaurant for lunch. Indulge in a freshly prepared meal of local cuisine and wine before adventuring to some of the incredible historical sites on the island.

A great place to start is the castle of Monolithos. Perched up above the settlements on the island, the ruins here sport some incredible views of the island as well as a magical insight into medieval times. The Old Town is another historical sight not to be missed. Walk along the wall to see some of the fortifications which once housed armed patrols before visiting a harbourside restaurant for a delightful meal and pretty views of the sunset.

Explore the beautiful surrounds before you say your final farewells

On your final day, you will have cruised through the night and anchored down at Fethiye in Turkey . Well known for having multiple rock tombs and natural blue waters, Fethiye is yours to explore at your leisure before making your way homewards.

If your time is short at this last location, indulge in a hearty breakfast before disembarking your luxury charter yacht and then head towards the theater of Telmessos. This ancient city of Telmessos was the foundations of the modern city you see today but it is precious places like by the harbor where you can see and truly appreciate the historical remnants of the past. The Hellenistic theater was excavated in the 1990s and proves to be a popular tourist site for those interested in history and culture.

Before ending your tour of the Greek islands, be sure to visit Hillside Beach club for one final meal overlooking the Mediterranean where you will recount the previous days' adventures and contemplate your next luxury charter yacht adventure.
