Handlung und Hintergrund

Drei junge Paare und ein Baby haben sich auf einer Yacht vor der Küste Mexikos eingefunden, um ihr Wiedersehen zu feiern. Die Stimmung sinkt beträchtlich, als alle sechs Freunde im Wasser treiben und die automatische Relingleiter leider wieder eingefahren ist. Unfähig, die zwei Meter hohe Bordwand zu erklimmen, sehen sechs Todeskandidaten einem mehr als ungewissen Schicksal entgegen. Und beginnen zu streiten.

Ursprünglich als eigenständiger Film („Adrift“) gedreht, musste Hans Horn seinen überzeugenden Hochseealbtraum als Fortsetzung des Kassenschlagers „ Open Water “ umbenennen.

Sechs Freunde haben sich verabredet, ihr Wiedersehen und einen 30. Geburtstag auf einer Luxusyacht zu feiern. Man badet weit draußen im offenen Meer. Nur Amy bleibt an Bord bei ihrem Säugling, bis Dan sie mit ins Wasser reißt. Sie erleidet einen Schock und soll wieder auf die Yacht gebracht werden. Doch die Treppe ist zusammengeklappt und unerreichbar in zwei Meter Höhe.

Sechs Freunde sehen sich nach Jahren der Trennung wieder und feiern auf offener See. Als die anderen die Yacht für ein kurzes Bad verlassen, nimmt die junge Mutter Amy nicht teil - sie hat Angst vor dem Meer und kümmert sich lieber an Bord um ihr Baby. Doch ihr Kumpel Dan wirft sich als Höhepunkt eines missgeglückten Scherzes gemeinsam mit ihr ins Wasser. Amy verliert das Bewusstsein - und nach kurzer Zeit gibt es ein böses Erwachen: Die Leiter der Yacht schwebt unerreichbar über den Köpfen der Schwimmer.

Die scheinbare Endlosigkeit des Ozeans, die sichere Endlichkeit des menschlichen Lebens, sie werden in diesem Film gegeneinander gestellt. Das ist vielleicht auch das Einzige, was gelingt. Das, was den Vorgängerfilm auszeichnete: niedriges Budget, Einfachheit des Settings, dafür umso mehr Kreativität bei der Umsetzung, davon hat Teil 2 noch Anleihen, allerdings setzt er besonders im ersten Drittel zu sehr auf eine wirklich ätzende Lockerheit, die über das kommende Unheil hinwegtäuschen soll. Es ist einem klar, was der Regisseur damit wollte (übrigens ein anderer als der von Teil 1). Er wollte Unbeschwertheit und Hedonismus zeigen, und gleichzeitig die Katastrophe ankündigen. Das tut er durch die Gegenüberstellung der lustigen Biertrinklaune und der latenten Aggression, die stets subtil zwischen den Figuren herrscht und natürlich auch durch die heimliche Hauptfigur Amy, die mit ihrer signalfarbenen Schwimmweste auf die Gefahr des Wassers nicht gerade sehr dezent hinweist. Aber dieses „Vorspiel“ zur Katastrophe ist einfach nur schlecht und es bleibt einem im Kopf kleben wie Hundescheiße am Schuh. Auch wenn von den Filmemachern vielleicht gedacht war, dass darüber dezent hinweggesehen wird mit den Attraktionen die folgen. Aber nein, dass ist ganz und gar nicht geglückt. Zwei morbid-schöne, ja fast poetische Momente sind allerdings dann doch gelungen: eine Unterwasseraufnahme der strampelnden Menschen und ein Flugzeug, dass weit über ihnen durch den Himmel zieht, voller nichts ahnender Passagiere, welcher existenzielle Kampf da unter ihnen vor sich geht; und wenn das Gewitter auf die Überlebenden herunterprasselt, so wird das für einen Augenblick zur Parabel auf das Leben. Mit unserem Filmwissen wird fast durchgehend gespielt, mit Genreerwartungen und Vergleichen zu anderen Filmen. Da schwimmt der weiße Hai unter der Titanic hindurch und noch einiges mehr. Die Figuren haben alle, wie in Hollywood Filmen gemeinhin üblich, eine feste Charakterisierung. Allerdings sind sie hier ein wenig zu hölzern und festgefahren in ihre Raster eingepasst. Besonders ärgerlich ist die Darstellung der Michelle. Sie ist die Gespielin von Dan und hat weder Hirn noch Herz. Sie bekommt keine Chance, sich auch als Mensch zu präsentieren. Während ihr männlicher Gegenpart, Buße tun darf und eine moralische Läuterung bekommt, indem er seine Schuld eingesteht, darf sie sich in ihrer triebhaften Unreflektiertheit nur steigern. Die Botschaft ist irgendwie, dass sie zu dumm ist, um überleben zu dürfen. Ihren Körper allerdings darf sie zeigen und die Männer, auch das männliche Publikum erfreuen, aber ein menschliches Gewissen oder gar Intelligenz wird ihr schlichtweg abgeschrieben. Sie versinkt in den Tiefen des Ozeans ohne dass jemand um sie trauern würde. Die Meinung des Publikums ist mit Sicherheit einstimmig, dass ihr Tod irgendwie verdient ist und mehr Sinn hat als ihr Leben. Und das ist es vor allem, was diesen Film zu einer schablonenhaften Charakterposse macht: besonders zu Beginn geht es nur um Spaß, um Bier und um die Brüste von Michelle. Auch, dass es Michelle ist, und nicht einer der Männer, die Zack eine Torte in Form von Brüsten überreicht, macht diese Geste nicht besser. Als später dann, wenn alles aussichtslos erscheint ebendiese Torte in Großaufnahme gezeigt wird, fragt man sich ernsthaft über die Haltung der Filmemacher. Was wollen sie uns damit wohl sagen? Das Baby, das bald aufwachen wird hat Hunger? Das letzte an das Du denken sollst vor Deinem Tod ist ein Kuchen- in Busenform? Wir wissen es nicht. Ewig könnte man darüber weiter philosophieren. Zum darüber philosophieren ist dieser Film aber auch nicht gedacht, unterhalten soll er. Tut er das? Der im Wasser spielende Teil, der „eigentliche“ Film, ist zwar teils spannend, aber so vorhersehbar wechseln An- und Entspannung, das man irgendwann nur noch genervt ist vom hin und her, der in Blöcke eingeteilten Emotionen (der eigenen und der, der Figuren). Eigentlich hält einen nur bei der Stange, wie der Film endet. Und das tut er dann auch irgendwie und irgendwann - zum Glück. Fazit: Streckenweise spannender Thriller über Menschen in einer Extremsituation, der allerdings ziemlich ungelenk und klischeehaft daherkommt.

Todesstille: Hans Horns als Sequel zum US-Sleeper von 2004 gelabelter Thriller variiert dessen Grundidee nur leicht, packt aber mit intensiver Spannung, wenn sechs Freunde auf offener See zu ertrinken drohen. Sie haben sich verabredet, ihr Wiedersehen und einen 30. Geburtstag auf einer Luxusyacht zu feiern. Viel hat sich verändert: Amy (Susan May Pratt) und ihr Mann James (Richard Speight, Jr.) haben mittlerweile ein Baby. Zach (Niklaus Lange) ist mit Lauren (Ali Hillis) zusammen und der vermeintlich vermögende Playboy Dan (Eric Dane) hat sich den Blondinenwitz Michelle (Cameron Richardson) als Bettgespielin zugelegt. Schon beim Vergnügungstrip in die Gewässer vor Mexikos Küste (Drehort: Malta) schlägt Videoclipper Hans Horn einen gedämpften Ton an, der sein Thema von Verlassenheit und Isolation anstimmt. Dazu ist Amy mit einer nur dem eigenen Partner bekannten Phobie vor Gewässern geschlagen und trägt eine Rettungsweste (wovon niemand Notiz zu nehmen scheint). Weit draußen im offenen Meer badet die Gruppe. Nur Amy bleibt an Bord bei ihrem Säugling, bis Dan sie in einem Anfall machohafter Umnachtung packt und mit ihr ins Wasser springt. Im Schock verliert sie das Bewusstsein und soll sofort wieder auf die Yacht gebracht werden - erst da wird allen klar, dass die Treppe zusammengeklappt und unerreichbar zwei Meter über ihren Köpfen schwebt. Wie die sechs allmählich realisieren, dass sie dem Tod geweiht sind, lässt dieses auf wahren Vorkommnissen fußende Realhorror-Szenario beklemmend miterleben und zieht mit allen Finessen die Spannungsschraube an. Gleich einer Replugged-Version des minimalistischen „ Open Water “ nutzt die deutsche, aber auf englisch gedrehte Produktion genrespezifische Stilmittel zur geschickten Dramatisierung und malt die Extremsituation in allen schrecklichen Farben aus: Durst, Auskühlung, Krämpfe, Erschöpfung, Verzweiflung - Horn bleibt immer dicht an den Figuren und verabreicht eine erschütternde Emotionspackung. Das Kammerspiel im Wasser kann sich auf sein überzeugendes Konzept, ein fabelhaftes Cinemascope-Format und die starken Darsteller verlassen, die so manche nicht ganz wasserdichte Wendung bravourös überspielen. tk.

Es schwimmen sechs Menschen auf hoher See und haben vergessen, an ihrer Yacht die Bootsleiter herunterzulassen - wie kommen sie wieder an Deck? Mit dieser Rätselaufgabe ist schon die ganze Handlung des Films "Open Water 2" von Hans Horn beschrieben. Die deutsche Produktion leiht sich den Titel von dem "Hai-frisst-Mensch"-Horrorfilm "Open Water" - doch haben beide Streifen nur das Wasser gemeinsam. Der an der Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film München ausgebildete Werbefilmer Horn spielt in diesem Low-Budget-Dreh nur mit der Angst vor einem möglichen Haiangriff.

Der Zuschauer wartet, aber der Hai kommt nicht, obschon zwischen den sechs Akteuren - Amy, James, Zach, Lauren, Michelle und Dan - auch viel Blut ins blaue Meer fließt. Die Leistung der amerikanischen Schauspieler, von denen bisher einige allenfalls aus US-Fernsehserien bekannt sind, ist nicht weiter der Rede Wert. Dennoch sollen die jungen Amerikaner helfen - wie der Titel -, das wohl als Thriller gedachte Wasserdrama international in die Kinos zu bringen. Die sechs Freunde um die 30 treffen sich zu einem Ausflug mit einer Luxusyacht.

Mit Kind und Kindheitstrauma

Laut Drehbuch (Adam Kreutner) spielt die Handlung vor der mexikanischen Küste, doch war das Set um Kameramann Bernhard Jasper, der in Ludwigsburg an der Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg studierte, in Malta im Einsatz. Hier steigen alle aufs Boot, Alkohol fließt. Nur Amy (Susan May Pratt) passt nicht so richtig in die lustige Runde, sie ist gerade Mutter geworden, der Säugling liegt in der Kajüte. Was aber viel schwerer wiegt, ist Amys Kindheitstrauma: Als Kind sah sie ihren Vater ertrinken und hat seither Angst vor dem Wasser.

Warum sich Amy dennoch auf die Tour einlässt, bleibt eine der vielen offenen Fragen dieses Kammerspiels. Während schon vier im Wasser sind, ist Amy nur noch mit ihrer kleinen Tochter und dem Lebemann und Schönling Dan an Bord. Dan will sie von ihrem Trauma heilen und springt mit ihr ins Wasser. Es folgt eine Aneinanderreihung des Vorhersehbaren: Die allesamt mit sportlichen Körpern, aber nicht mit viel Grips Gesegneten verzweifeln zunehmend zwischen ihren Versuchen, am glatten Schiffsrumpf wieder an Deck zu kommen.

Verzweifelte Suche nach Überraschungen

Dass der Zuschauer in den handlungsarmen 90 Minuten doch irgendwie dabei bleibt, mag wohl vor allem am Warten auf den Hai liegen und daran, dass die meisten Protagonisten sterben. Unfreiwillig komisch sind dabei immer wieder die Dialoge und die Ideen sich zu retten. Da fallen absurde Sätze wie: "Er muss ins Krankenhaus, aber schnell", und es werden Bikinis und Badehosen zu einem Seil geknüpft. Dem Drehbuch ist die verzweifelte Suche nach Überraschungen anzumerken, etwa wenn Sonnyboy Dan (Eric Dane) plötzlich gesteht, dass ihm die Yacht nicht gehört und er auch keinen Bootsführerschein hat.

Abwechslung bieten zuweilen Horns und Jaspers Einfälle bei Film- und Kameratechnik - aus finanziellen Gründen beschränken sie sich auf 16 Millimeter - statt des sonst im Kino üblichen 35-Millimeter- Filmmaterials. Eine Handkamera vermittelt hautnah das Gefühl des Ertrinkens, es gibt extreme Zeitlupen und Zeitraffer, die Szenen im Super-8-Stil ablaufen lassen, und es gibt Unschärfeeffekte. Damit hätte aus der Geschichte ein wunderbarer Kurzfilm werden können, doch so geht die Story mit Geld der Filmförderung Bayern fast selbst baden.

Captain Ron gehört unserer Meinung nach zu den besten Segelfilme. Captain Ron folgt den Missgeschicken des von Kurt Russell gespielten Hauptcharakters. Dieser wird von einem Vater der oberen Mittelklasse, dargestellt von Martin Harvey, dafür angestellt, seine Yacht durch die Karibik zu navigieren. Die Reise verläuft allerdings nicht so idyllisch wie die Familie erwartet, da Kapitän Ron keinen Schimmer von Navigation hat und nur weiß, wie er sie Schwierigkeiten bringen kann.

11. White Squall – Ein Segelfilm, der auf wahren Begebenheiten beruht

Der Film „White Squall“ von 1996 wird von vielen heiß geliebt (auch für uns einer der besten Segelfilme) und basiert auf einer wahren Begebenheit. Er begleitet eine Gruppe von Jungen im Schulalter, die Disziplin und eine gute Arbeitsmoral auf einem Schiff lernen sollen, das von einem willensstarken Kapitän gesteuert wird. Die Stimmung schlägt aber plötzlich um, als sie auf hoher See in eine Weiße Bö geraten. Nun muss die junge Crew alles zum Überleben nutzen, was ihnen der Skipper beigebracht hat.

10. Die Tiefseetaucher – Ein Wes Anderson-Klassiker, der nicht nur Segler für sich gewinnt

Dieser Wes Anderson-Klassiker zählt zu den Lieblingsfilmen von Zizoo und ist einer der besten Segelfilme aller Zeiten! Wussten Sie schon, dass unser Name eigentlich von Steve Zissou inspiriert ist? 9. Deep Water – Einer der besten Segelfilme, der die Geschichte eines tragischen Yacht-Rennens erzählt

Deep Water ist ein von Kritikern viel gelobter Dokumentarfilm, der die Geschichte des desaströsen Yacht-Rennens um die Welt von 1968 erzählt. Im Kampf mit dem Meer und der eigenen Psyche versucht der Amateursegler Donald Crowhurst in neun Monaten ohne Zwischenstopp um den Globus zu segeln. Und was dabei herauskommt, ist erschreckend.

8. African Queen – Ein Bootsabenteuer in Afrika mit einer Liebesgeschichte, die Ihr Herz höher schlagen lässt

African Queen ist ein Film über ein kleines Bootsabenteuer von 1951. Humpfrey Bogart hat für seine Rolle in diesem Segelfilm einen Oscar als bester Schauspieler gewonnen. Gemeinsam mit seiner Mitdarstellerin Katherine Hepburn führt er die Zuschauer durch den afrikanischen Dschungel und Scharmützel des ersten Weltkriegs. Dabei spielt Bogart einen groben, betrunkenen Flussbootskapitän, dessen ideales Gegenstück durch Hepburn als vornehme, ehrliche Missionarin verkörpert wird.

Dieser versucht sich darin an einer Solo-Seereise von Europa nach Australien. Der Fokus liegt vor allem auf seiner drei-jährigen Transformation vom unerfahrenen Segler hin zum erfahrenen Seebären. Durch die Szenen an Land und an Bord verfolgt ihn der Zuschauer bei seinem Kampf mit dem Meer, dem Wind und absoluter Isolation, während er versucht, seinen Traum in die Tat umzusetzen.

In Todesstille sieht man Nicole Kidman, Sam Neill, Billy Zane und eine wunderschöne 40m Ketsch. Der Film ist ein Thriller, der es wirklich versteht, Ihnen das Blut in den Adern gefrieren zu lassen. Gefilmt wurde fast ausschließlich auf dem Meer rund um die Whitsundays Islands vor Australien. Die Kombination aus gefährlichen Segelkonditionen, Isolation und der Bedrohung durch einen Bösewicht an Bord ist dabei eine Mischung, die nichts zu wünschen übrig lässt.

4. Kon-Tiki – Der Klassiker aus Norwegen

Kon-Tiki wurde auf der Insel Malta gefilmt und ist ein historisches Drama über die Geschichte von Thor Heyerdahl und dessen Kon-Tiki Entdeckungsreise von 1947. Es handelt sich um den ersten norwegischen Film, der sowohl für einen Oscar als auch für einen Golden Globe nominiert wurde. Und auch heute ist es noch immer der größte Kassenschlager des Landes. In dem Film bricht Thor Heyerdahl auf eine faszinierende Reise mit dem Ziel auf, den pazifischen Ozean zu durchqueren. Damit erhofft er sich, zu beweisen, dass sich die Südamerikaner noch vor Kolumbus in Polynesien ansiedeln konnten. Die dramatischen Ereignisse, die sich daraus ergeben, sind unheimlich fesselnd!

We discussed, because the world of cinema and TV (just think of Netflix) give us an almost infinite catalogue. We finally succeeded and we are happy to present you our favorite sailing movies. 1. 180° SOUTH (2010)

“180° South” is a 2010 adventure documentary film directed by Chris Malloy. The film follows the journey of Jeff Johnson as he retraces the steps of his heroes Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins to Patagonia, Chile. Along the way, Johnson encounters a variety of challenges, including navigating rugged terrain and dealing with extreme weather conditions. The film also explores themes of environmental conservation and the importance of protecting natural resources. 2. All is lost (2013)

“Chasing Bubbles” is a documentary about the journey and spirit of Alex Rust , a farm boy turned day trader from Indiana who, at 25, abandoned his life in Chicago, bought a modest sailboat (called Bubbles) and set out to sail around the world.

5. Dead calm (1989)

Dead Calm is a 1989 Australian psychological thriller film directed by Phillip Noyce and starring Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman and Billy Zane. The screenplay by Terry Hayes was based on the 1963 novel of the same name by Charles Williams; the film represents the first successful film adaptation of the novel after Orson Welles struggled for years to complete his own film based on it titled The Deep . Filmed around the Great Barrier Reef, the plot focuses on a married couple, who, after tragically losing their son, are spending some time isolated at sea, when they come across a stranger who has abandoned a sinking ship. A must see among sailing movies!

6. Deep Water (2006)

“Deep Water” is a 2006 documentary film directed by Jerry Rothwell and Louise Osmond about the history of the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race , a solo sailing race around the world that was held in 1968. The film follows the stories of the race’s participants, including Donald Crowhurst, a British sailor who became embroiled in a scandal when it was revealed that he had falsified his position in the race. The film also explores themes of adventure, ambition, and the human cost of pushing oneself to the limits. It was well-received by critics and audiences and won a number of awards.

7. Maidentrip (2013)

“Maidentrip” is a 2013 documentary film about the life of Laura Dekker , a Dutch sailor who, at the age of 14, became the youngest person to sail solo around the world. The film follows Dekker’s journey as she navigates the challenges and dangers of her voyage, including rough seas, equipment failures, and isolation. It also explores Dekker’s background and her motivations for embarking on such a risky and ambitious journey. “Maidentrip” was praised for its intimate and engaging portrayal of Dekker’s journey and for its powerful depiction of the human spirit and determination.

8. Master and commander (2003)

During the Napoleonic Wars, a brash British captain pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America. The naval action in the Mediterranean is  closely based on the real-life exploits of Lord Cochrane , including a battle modelled after Cochrane’s spectacular victory in the brig HMS Speedy over the vastly superior Spanish frigate El Gamo.

9. Morning light (2008)

Fifteen young sailors… six months of intense training… one chance at the brass ring. This documentary tells the story of a group of intrepid and determined young men and women, on the cusp of adulthood, as they embark on life’s first great adventure. Fifteen young men and women prepare for the adventure of their lives when they enter the TRANSPAC, one of the world’s most prestigious open-ocean sailing competitions. They begin their training in Hawaii with world-class teachers, but it is the race itself, a 2,300-mile ordeal featuring top professionals, that molds them into a cohesive whole.

10. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

“Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” is a 2003 adventure film directed by Gore Verbinski and based on the popular Disney theme park attraction of the same name. The film stars Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, a wily and unpredictable pirate who teams up with a blacksmith named Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and a Governor’s daughter named Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) to rescue Elizabeth’s father and defeat the cursed pirate captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). The film also features an ensemble cast of supporting characters and is known for its action, humor, and special effects. It was a commercial and critical success and spawned a successful film franchise.

11. The Mercy (2018)

The Mercy is a British biographical drama film , directed by James Marsh and written by Scott Z. Burns. It is based on the true story of the disastrous attempt by the amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst to complete the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race in 1968 and his subsequent attempts to cover up his failure.

12. The Odyssey (2016)

The Odyssey is a movie which chronicles the life of the great Jacques Cousteau. Jacques Cousteau is perhaps one of the most famous French persons in the world due to his pioneering work on scuba diving, underwater exploration and film-making which introduced a whole generation to the wonders of reef and marine life in the ocean.

13. Turning Tide – En solitaire (2013)

It tells the story of Yann Kermadec whose dreams suddenly come true when he has to replace the DCNS star skipper at the last minute before the start of the Vendée Globe (a round-the-world non-stop single-handed yacht race). After several days of racing, Yann, who is in the lead, has to stop to repair a damaged rudder. This will disrupt his round-the-world journey…

14. White squall (1996)

Teenage boys discover discipline and camaraderie on an ill-fated sailing voyage. It is a coming of age film in which a group of high school and college-aged teenagers sign up for several months of training aboard a sail ship, a brigantine, and travel around half the globe when suddenly they are challenged by a severe storm.

15. WIND (1992)

Will Parker, played by Matthew Modine, loses the Americas Cup, the worlds biggest sailing prize, to the Australians and decides to form his own syndicate to win it back. In 1983, yacht sailor Will Parker (Matthew Modine) leads an American crew financed by millionaire Morgan Weld (Cliff Robertson) to defeat during the America’s Cup race against an Australian crew. Determined to get the prize back, Will convinces Morgan to finance an experimental boat designed by his ex-girlfriend Kate’s (Jennifer Grey) new beau, Joe Heisler (Stellan Skarsgard). When the boat is completed, the Americans head to Australia to reclaim the cup.

25 sailing movies for when you’re knot shore what to watch

We share some of our favourite best sailing movies, from Hollywood blockbusters and indie films to illuminating documentaries

I still hang on to the rather fanciful notion of sailing in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race . Until I pluck up the courage (and the funds), I’ve been busying myself with more realistic nautical escapades.

From  tall ship sailing off the west coast of Scotland  to  sailing the Whitsunday Islands  in Australia , more and more of our travels have taken place on the water.

However, until I make the leap from weekend warrior to blue water sailor, I’ll have to make do with films, books and daydreams.

With that in mind, I’ve put together a list of the best sailing movies I’ve seen. What follows is a broad mix of modern and classic, indie and feature, drama and documentary film. Whatever their style, these flicks are thoroughly wet and wonderful.

And, I’m sorry about the pun, but you know, ship happens.

Listed in no particular order, these nautical movies include terrifying ordeals of tragedy, inconceivable stories of survival, turbulent tales of adventure and wild journeys of discovery – perfect for a night in on a dry and comfy sofa.

1. Kon-Tiki (1950) Let’s start with one of the best sailing movies ever made. In 1947, Heyerdahl and five others sailed from Peru on a balsa wood raft. This is the classic Academy Award winning documentary of their astonishing journey across 4,300 miles of the Pacific Ocean.

2. Red Dot on the Ocean (2014) Once labelled a ‘youth-at-risk’, 30-year old Matt Rutherford risked it all in an attempt to become the first person to sail solo non-stop around North and South America. Red Dot on the Ocean is the story of Matt’s death-defying voyage and the childhood odyssey that shaped him.

3. The Dove (1974) Produced by Gregory Peck, this coming-of-age adventure is based on the true story of Robin Lee Graham . At 16, he set sail in a 23ft sloop determined to be the youngest person to sail around the world.

4. Wind (1992) In over 140 years of competition, the US has lost the America’s Cup just once. This is a fictional story of the American challengers intent on winning back sailing’s top prize. A tale of money, power, love and ambition follows… oh, and some sailing.

5. Morning Light (2008) A riveting true-life adventure aboard the high-tech sloop Morning Light. Fifteen rookie sailors have one goal in mind: to be part of her crew, racing in one of the most revered sailing competitions in the world, the Transpac Yacht Race .

6. Between Home – Odyssey of an Unusual Sea Bandit (2012) An independent filmmaker’s account of his solo voyage from the UK to Australia, negotiating the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans en route. A trip that eventually takes over two years to complete.

7. Styx (2019) When a lone yachtswoman comes across a sinking ship of refugees, she is torn away from her idyllic trip and tasked with a momentous decision. Should she act when authorities tell her to sail away?

8. Captain Ron (1992) After inheriting a yacht, a Chicago businessman enlists long-haired, one-eyed low-life Captain Ron to pilot the yacht from the Caribbean to Miami. During the voyage, the sailor frequently loses his way while becoming a hit with the businessman’s family. Goofy comedy starring Kurt Russell and Martin Short widely recognised as one of the funniest sailing movies ever made.

9. Maidentrip (2013) This riveting documentary chronicles the life and adventures of 14-year-old Laura Dekker who set out on a two-year voyage in pursuit of her dream to be the youngest person ever to sail solo around the world.

10. Kon-Tiki (2012) A well-crafted retelling of the epic original and one of the best sailing movies ever made. This dramatised version is a throwback to old-school adventure filmmaking that’s exciting and entertaining in spite of its by-the-book plotting.

11. Abandoned (2015) Four men set sail on the trimaran yacht Rose Noelle . It capsizes in a storm, trapping the crew in a space the size of a double bed. After 119 days adrift, the yacht washes ashore. The crew’s story is extraordinary, but doubt is cast on their claims and they face hostility from the media and authorities.

12. Adrift (2019) There are far better films on this list, but Adrift is just about worth a watch. Based on true events, a young couple embark on an adventure of a lifetime that brings them face to face with one of the worst hurricanes in recorded history.

13. The Perfect Storm (2000) A skipper insists that his crew go out on a final fishing trip before winter sets in. Unknown to them, a brutal storm is on its way. While the special effects are excellent for the time, the film falls a little  short on characterisation.

14. Sea Gypsies: The Far Side of the World (2016) The vessel is Infinity, a 120ft hand-built sailboat, crewed by a band of miscreants. The journey, an 8,000-mile Pacific crossing from New Zealand to Patagonia with a stop in Antarctica .

15. Turning Tide / En Solitaire (2013) Franck Drevil is a star skipper, having won the latest Vendée Globe , the most prestigious round-the-world single-handed yacht race. However, with this year’s race approaching, a sudden accident forces Franck to withdraw.

16. Knife in the Water (1962) When a young hitchhiker joins a couple on a weekend yacht trip, psychological warfare breaks out as the two men compete for the woman’s attention. A storm forces the small crew below deck and tension builds to a violent climax.

17. Dead Calm (1989) This tense thriller tells the story of an Australian couple (Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill) whose yacht cruise is violently interrupted by the mysterious lone survivor (Billy Zane) of a ship whose crew has perished.

18. The Riddle of the Sands (1979) A classic British swashbuckling yarn based on the early English spy novel of the same name. In 1901, two British yachtsmen visit Germany’s Frisian Islands and accidentally discover a German plot to invade England.

19. Maiden (2019) The story of Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old cook on charter boats, who became the skipper of the first-ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989.

20. White Squall (1996) Based on a true incident from 1960, White Squall is the story of the tragic sinking of the Albatross , a prep school educational two-masted schooner, during a Caribbean storm. Starring Jeff Bridges.

21. The Mercy (2017) Starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz, this is certainly no heroic tale. Instead, it’s the dramatisation of the bizarre story of amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst and his attempt to pull off one of the greatest hoaxes of our time: pretending to be the first to sail singlehandedly around the world!

22. Deep Water (2006) Following on from the above, Deep Water is a British documentary about the remarkable story of the first Golden Globe round the world yacht race , focusing on the psychological toll it took on its competitors – particularly one Donald Crowhurst.

23. Captains Courageous (1937) A spoiled brat who falls overboard from a steamship gets picked up by a fishing boat, where he’s made to earn his keep by joining the crew in their work. Based on the 1897 novel by Rudyard Kipling.

24. Open Water 2: Adrift (2006) A silly premise, but entertaining nonetheless. Six friends jump off a yacht without lowering the ladder first. With no way to climb aboard, it’s only a matter of time before bickering turns to terror.

Flavio (Filippo Nigro) und Elena (Diana Fleri) laden ihre besten Freunde (Marco Bocci, Marina Rocco, Katsiaryna Shulha, Alessandro Tiberi) auf ihre vor der traumhaften Küste Süditaliens im Mittelmeer verankerte Yacht ein. Als das Sextett nach einer durchfeierten Nacht erwacht, muss es feststellen, dass das Boot scheinbar sabotiert wurde und jemand sie ausgeraubt hat. Nun treiben sie völlig hilflos auf offener See – ohne Trinkwasser, ohne Nahrung und vor allem ohne ihre Handys. Flavio versucht, die anderen mit Durchhalteparolen zu beruhigen, wird aber selbst langsam nervös. Da taucht am Horizont ein anderes Schiff auf und nähert sich zielstrebig ihrem Boot. Wie sich allerdings schon kurz darauf per Funkkontakt herausstellt, beabsichtigt dessen Kapitän wohl keineswegs, den Schiffbrüchigen zu helfen. Ganz im Gegenteil …

Tatsächlich stellt sich das Erbe als gigantisch heraus, viele Millionen US-Dollar kann sie mit dem Verkauf verdienen. Als sie dies nachts feiern möchte und die attraktive Zufallsbekanntschaft Michael ( Patrick Schwarzenegger ) mit auf die Yacht nimmt, um dort die Nacht mit ihm zu verbringen, erlebt sie jedoch einen absoluten Alptraum: Eine Gruppe Männer bringt das Boot in seine Gewalt und fährt damit aufs offene Meer hinaus …

Kostengünstige Enttäuschung

Eine Zeit lang sah es so aus, als könnte Ruby Rose eine richtig starke Karriere in Hollywood haben. Viel geblieben ist davon nicht. Aus der Prestigeserie Batgirl ist sie ausgestiegen. Stattdessen gab es die Actionthriller S.A.S.: Red Notice und Vanquish – Überleben hat seinen Preis , dazu not die Komödie 1UP . Gesehen haben muss man nichts davon. Während der erstgenannte Film zumindest noch irgendwie Durchschnitt war, sind die beiden anderen qualitativ deutlich darunter angesetzt. Und leider gilt das auch für The Yacht , eine weitere eher kostengünstige Direct-to-Video-Produktion, die kaum dazu geeignet ist, der vor sich hin dümpelnden Karriere der Australierin neuen Schwung zu verleihen.

Fans der durchaus actionaffinen Schauspielerin dürften zudem enttäuscht sein, wie wenig ihr Kampftalent genutzt wird. Die erste Irritation besteht darin, dass wir eine junge Bella ( Eden Harper ) sehen, die Probleme mit der Polizei hat. Für den weiteren Verlauf der Handlung ist die Szene völlig irrelevant. Das bisschen Familiengeschichte hätte man auch anderweitig im Film unterbringen können, zumal es nicht einmal so ist, dass dadurch etwas für den Inhalt gewonnen wäre. Das entfremdete Verhältnis zum Vater wird nicht wirklich deutlicher. Die kriminelle Vorvergangenheit hilft nichts bei dem Überlebenskampf auf dem Schiff. Der Schicksalsschlag, der in ihr eine Wasserphobie ausgelöst hat, ist auch nur ein billiger Kniff, um die Protagonistin vom Meer fernzuhalten und sie zu einer Gefangenen auf der Yacht zu machen.

Unsinnig und langweilig

Nicht dass die Serie ansonsten großen Wert darauf legen würde, irgendwie sinnvoll zu sein. Tatsächlich sind die Logiklöcher teils so enorm groß, dass selbst eine Luxusyacht wie in dem Film darin problemlos verschwinden könnte. Warum beispielsweise die Verbrecher nicht vorher schon zugeschlagen haben, als dies mit wenig Aufwand möglich gewesen wäre, wird nie klar. Auch eine späte Wendung ergibt nicht sonderlich viel Sinn. Zumal kaum jemand, abgesehen von der Protagonistin, hiervon überrascht sein dürfte. Ian Hayden , der hierfür sein erstes und bislang einziges Drehbuch vorgelegt hat, hat damit nicht unbedingt ein Empfehlungsschreiben verfasst. Von den Figuren brauchen wir erst gar nicht anzufangen.

Das wäre alles zu verschmerzen, wenn der Film dafür spannend wäre. Aber auch bei seiner Hauptaufgabe versagt der Thriller. Dabei sind Setting und Szenario eigentlich durchaus geeignet, um Spannung zu erzeugen. So eine Yacht ist weitläufig genug, um sich darin irgendwo verstecken zu können. Gleichzeitig handelt es sich um einen in sich geschlossenen Raum, aus dem es kein Entkommen gibt. Daraus hätte man also schon etwas machen können. Tatsächlich passiert die Hälfte des Films lang praktisch gar nichts, erst später kommt es zu einem tatsächlichen Kampf. Warum Bella so gut im Kämpfen ist, wird übrigens ebenfalls nicht verraten. Da wird dann einfach ein Schalter umgelegt. Das ist schade, weil so viel mehr möglich gewesen wäre, nur selten wird es tatsächlich mal etwas aufregender. Und so sind die besten Szenen dann auch die, als Bella und Michael miteinander flirten. Auch das ist letztendlich nicht wirklich relevant für die Handlung, für sich genommen sind das aber Momente, die funktionieren – was man vom Rest kaum behaupten kann.

Typischer Verriss der John Wick Generation. The Yacht bietet einen durchaus spannenden Thriller der, das ist tatsächlich für mich als Fan von Ruby Rose etwas unschön, sparsam mit Action umgeht. Aber gut. Das ist dem geringen Budget solch einen kleinen Film geschuldet. Der Film an sich ist nicht so schlecht, wie er auf diversen Seiten verrissen wird.

Übrigens glänzte Ruby Rose erst unlängst mit toller Action in dem Film „The Doorman“. Wird natürlich und wie erwartet im Artikel nicht erwähnt. Auch nicht erwähnt wird, das Ruby kleinere Produktionsunternehen, Independent Filme, unterstützt.

Ich hoffe noch viel mehr von Ruby zu sehen. Gerne auch in weniger spektakulären Filme wie The Yacht. Nehme ich gerne mit. Vanquish fand ich auch toll. Guter B-Movie.

Warum auch erwähnen.

Leider stört die Unlogik in dem Film, mehr als die unsinnigen Dialoge. Man merkt bereits am Anfang, dass dieser Film enttäuschen wird, denkt sich jedoch, egal, will die Story sehen. Man stellt sich so viele „warums“ und denkt sich „hä“s, dass es schon Mega langweilt, da man den Verstand wohl weglassen muss, dann bleibt auch kein Action. Also im großen und ganzen, eine 2 von 10.

The CIA Agent has been portrayed by 7 different actors across 10 feature films—why is the character’s casting so variable in the Bond franchise?

Felix Leiter has been a frequent presence in the  James Bond  films, but while other recurring characters like M, Q, or Miss Moneypenny (who should get a spin-off) have been relatively consistent in their on-screen representations, Leiter has been recast for nearly every film in the franchise. Indeed, seven different actors have played the CIA agent and friend to 007 in Eon Productions Bond films, while more still have lent the character their visage on television or in non-Eon productions. The question arises: why was this character so often recast while other actors became mainstays of their respective recurring roles? The answer, in large part, is found not in the narrative, but throughout the production history of the franchise.

Ian Fleming originally imagined Leiter as an ally to James Bond and something of an American counterpart to the debonair British operative. Possibly the most under-rated Bond character, Leiter was a former Marine who often came to the aid of 007, and in so doing represented the so-called "Special Relationship," as coined by Winston Churchill to describe the political cooperation between the United States and United Kingdom in the 20th and 21st centuries. First introduced in Fleming's novel  Casino Royale , Leiter repeatedly helped Bond until he lost an arm and a leg in a shark attack in the novel  Live and Let Die  and thereafter worked with the Pinkerton Detective Agency. This timeline is altered slightly in the Eon film series, but elements remain true to the original text.

As with other Bond  recurring characters Q , M, and Miss Moneypenny, Leiter first appeared in Dr No (1962). Jack Lord was chosen as the inaugural actor, though the producers added the Leiter character to the film despite his being absent from its novel counterpart. When Leiter was to be brought back for Goldfinger (1964), Lord's demand of co-star billing led the producers to recast the role with Cec Linder. Rik Van Nutter was offered the role without an audition in the next  Bond film  Thunderball (1965), leveraging a connection to Eon though his wife Anita Ekberg, who had recently appeared in another Eon production. At this point, a precedent for recasting Leiter for each movie had been set, and Norman Burton was selected for the 1971 film  Diamonds Are Forever .

When Roger Moore took up the Bond mantle in 1973's  Live and Let Die , David Hedison played Leiter and would be the first actor to ever reprise the role, in  License to Kill (1989)—a full 16 years later at the age of 61. License to Kill  featured Timothy Dalton as 007, whose earlier debut in the role in 1987's  The Living Daylights  was accompanied by John Terry's Leiter and was the first appearance of the character since 1973. Jeffrey Wright became the second actor to play Leiter in multiple films, appearing in  Casino Royale (2006) and  Quantum of Solace (2008). He's currently slated to appear a third time as Leiter in  No Time to Die (2021), where Wright will be breaking a  Bond franchise record .

The story of Felix Leiter's many faces is a journey through the production history of the  Bond  franchise. While the character made his screen debut in an episode of the anthology mystery series  Climax! in 1954, bringing the Leiter total to nine actors when combined also with the singular non-Eon film  Never Say Never Again (1983), his multifaceted journey goes from actor ambition to industry connections to aged reprisals and back again. No actor has yet to appear in three films as Felix Leiter, and with the newest  James Bond film set to finally come to audiences in 2021, it'll be making history.

Introduced as a former U.S. Marine working for the CIA, he has Texas roots and straw-colored hair. In his second appearance, he reveals a love for jazz music. As a sidekick, he rescues Bond after he loses to the villainous Le Chiffre at the poker tables.

In Live and Let Die , Leiter accompanies Bond around New York and Florida. It’s in Florida where he suffers a shark attack orchestrated by Mr. Big’s henchman, the Robber, losing an arm and a leg. After this incident, Leiter briefly reappears in Diamonds Are Forever , working for the Pinkerton Detective Agency after retiring from the CIA due to his severe injuries.

Leiter’s CIA background allows him to support Bond officially in several missions, such as Auric Goldfinger ‘s raid on Fort Knox, SPECTRE’s hijacking of atomic warheads in the Bahamas, and Francisco Scaramanga ‘s crime racket in Jamaica .

Felix Leiter returns in continuation novels, including John Gardner’s For Special Services , where he has a daughter named Cedar. Gardner also wrote the film novelization for Licence to Kill , explaining that Leiter’s encounter with sharks in the movie was his second time experiencing such an event.

In Raymond Benson’s novels, Leiter uses a wheelchair, but he’s depicted with fully functioning limbs in the 2011 reboot Carte Blanche . In William Boyd’s 2013 novel Solo , set within the Fleming continuity, Leiter has a nephew named Brigham, who follows in his uncle’s footsteps as a CIA agent.

Jack Lord portrayed the first on-screen Felix Leiter in Dr. No , despite the character not appearing in the original novel. As this was the inaugural film in the series, it made sense to include Leiter, setting the stage for his future appearances.

Initially, Leiter is depicted as a mysterious figure, lurking in the background and trailing Bond through the airport and by car, donning a stylish pair of cat-eye sunglasses to enhance the enigma.

On a tropical island of Afro Caribbeans all wearing island garb, Bond seems oblivious to a white man in a suit following him and only confronts him after defeating his lackeys. This marks their first meeting in the film series, as they join forces to investigate Dr. Julius No ‘s activities.

Among many Bond fans, Jack Lord is generally one of the best actors to have portrayed Felix Leiter. He possesses the right look and a fittingly reserved demeanor, although the friendship between Leiter and Bond feels somewhat shallow and underdeveloped.

Jack Lord was invited to return for Leiter’s second appearance, but the actor apparently wanted equal billing with Sean Connery and a massive pay raise, so the producers decided to go for a different actor.

Cec Linder: A One-Time Felix Leiter

Cec Linder made his sole appearance as Felix Leiter in Goldfinger (1964), taking over the role after Jack Lord declined to return, and instead went on to join the police force in Hawaii.

In Goldfinger , Leiter makes his presence and identity known right away when he approaches Bond in Miami for some “man talk”. His role in the latter part of the film is more prominent than in the novel, as he observes James Bond, who’s being held captive at Auric Goldfinger’s Kentucky ranch.

Cec Linder is visibly older than Jack Lord, but he brings a sense of warmth and camaraderie to the character, emphasizing a growing bond between Leiter and Bond. His performance was marked by subtle humor and a laid-back confidence.

That said, whether it’s because he was the first character to be played by a different actor, Linder isn’t generally liked by Bond fans.

Rik Van Nutter: A Closer Resemblance

Felix Leiter made a second consecutive appearance in the next film, Thunderball (1965), this time with Rik Van Nutter taking on the role. Though he bears little resemblance to his predecessors, he looks more like Jack Lord’s Leiter than Cec Linder’s. In fact, Van Nutter’s portrayal might be the closest to the literary version of the character.

Introduced in a similar fashion to Dr. No ‘s Leiter, he’s first seen lurking in the background, donning a suit and sunglasses. The confusion only heightens when Bond punches him upon their first face-to-face interaction, but Leiter’s true identity is quickly revealed, and he joins Bond in the search for stolen nuclear warheads.

A younger and more sophisticated Rik Van Nutter delivered a solid, if not particularly memorable, performance as Felix Leiter. The limited scope of his character prevented him from being more prominent, but Van Nutter’s portrayal was a big improvement on Linder’s.

Norman Burton: A Likeable but Unconvincing Leiter

In Diamonds Are Forever , Norman Burton took on the role of Felix Leiter, assisting Bond during his infiltration of the diamond smuggling pipeline in the United States. As it’s mostly based in the US, he plays a significant role in investigating Willard Whyte, although most of his work occurs behind the scenes.

Burton’s primary shortcoming, like Cec Linder’s, is his age and physical appearance, which make him less convincing as a CIA agent and friend of Connery’s Bond. He doesn’t seem like the type of person Bond would typically associate or form a close bond with, although he does have the odd moment.

David Hedison: Felix Leiter Twice Over

David Hedison holds the distinction of being the first actor to play Felix Leiter twice. He first appears alongside Roger Moore ‘s James Bond in Live and Let Die (1973), primarily working behind the scenes tracking Dr. Kananga ‘s activities and smoothing things over with the Louisiana police after Bond’s speedboat chase pile up. At the film’s conclusion, Leiter actively assists Bond and Quarrel Jr. in infiltrating and destroying Dr. Kananga’s poppy fields.

Hedison reprised the role a massive 16 years later in Licence to Kill (1989), alongside Timothy Dalton ‘s Bond. In this film, Leiter works as a DEA agent who arrests drug lord Franz Sanchez along with Bond, before they go to Leiter’s wedding.

Shortly after, Sanchez escapes and captures Leiter on his wedding night, feeding him to a pack of sharks. Upon learning of Sanchez’s escape, Bond rushes to Leiter’s home, only to find Della raped and murdered and Felix gravely injured. This tragedy sets the stage for the plot, with Bond going rogue to avenge his friend and ally.

David Hedison delivers two commendable performances, establishing himself as a solid and charismatic Felix Leiter. His charisma in both films elevates the emotional stakes, particularly after the tragic events of Licence to Kill , as he portrays a genuinely likable character.

John Terry: A Brief and Unmemorable Leiter

Between David Hedison’s two portrayals of Felix Leiter, the character made a fleeting appearance in The Living Daylights (1987), played by John Terry. With limited screen time and an unremarkable presence, it seems as though his inclusion in the film was an afterthought.

Terry’s Leiter and James Bond lack a strong bond, and it is easy to overlook his presence in the movie altogether. This is probably the reason, Hedison was invited back for a second time 16 years after his first appearance.

Jeffrey Wright: Felix Leiter Rebooted

After Felix Leiter’s dismemberment in Licence to Kill, the character was replaced with other allies, such as Jack Wade , during the Pierce Brosnan years. However, with the series reboot, Felix Leiter returned in Casino Royale (2005) after a 17-year absence, this time portrayed by Jeffrey Wright . Wright went on to become the second actor to play Felix Leiter more than once.

In Casino Royale , Leiter is introduced as a somewhat shady background character participating in the high-stakes poker game. It’s only when Bond is financially desperate that Leiter reveals his identity and helps Bond buy back into the game, in exchange for the rights to extradite Le Chiffre to the United States rather than Britain. This forms the foundation of their friendship.

In Quantum of Solace (2008), Leiter takes on a more prominent role as a subordinate to the corrupt CIA agent Gregg Beam in South America. He goes out of his way to warn Bond of impending danger, providing him with information on the villainous Dominic Greene . By the film’s end, M informs Bond that Leiter has been promoted to Beam’s old position.

Felix Leiter didn’t appear again until No Time To Die (2021), marking Jeffrey Wright’s third performance as Bond’s CIA ally. In the film, he works alongside State Department newcomer Logan Ash , and tracks down Bond to get him to help them locating a bioweapon in Cuba.

However, once they have the weapon aboard their vessel, Ash turns on them, shooting Felix and sabotaging the ship. As the boat starts to sink, Bond frantically attempts to save Felix’s life, but the devoted CIA agent urges him to leave, ensuring his sacrifice isn’t in vain.

This marks the first on-screen death of Felix Leiter in the James Bond franchise. But with No Time To Die being the end of the Daniel Craig era and Bond dying, too, we can assume that we will see both Bond and Felix Leiter again.

Jack Leiter’s Many Faces

Why James Bond Recast Felix Leiter In Goldfinger

Among James Bond movies , "Goldfinger" stands as the film that cemented 007's status as a global icon. Guy Hamilton's 1964 effort has since become known as the blueprint for all future Bond films, establishing longstanding tropes that still define the franchise today. A globe-spanning adventure, "Goldfinger" introduced that  gadget-filled Aston Martin DB5 alongside legendary Bond girl Pussy Galore, played by the late Honor Blackman . Then there was that famous laser beam scene , in which Sean Connery's Bond is strapped to a table and forced to await an inexplicably slow death.

But it wasn't just gadgets and Bond girls with dodgy names that "Goldfinger" brought to the table. Richard Maibaum and Paul Dehn's script also introduced more subtle staples to the 007 saga, including an opening sequence seemingly unrelated to the film's main plot and a testy relationship between the titular spy and Desmond Llewelyn's Q that established the pair's dynamic going forward. But one element of "Goldfinger" that's rarely talked about is the fact that it was the first time the character of CIA agent Felix Leiter was recast.

In 1962's "Dr. No," Jack Lord portrayed a young, suave version of Bond's CIA liaison who was almost an American counterpart to Connery's MI6 agent. That version of the character was nowhere to be seen in the follow-up, "From Russia With Love." But Leiter would return for "Goldfinger" in an entirely different form. This time, the character was portrayed by Polish-born Canadian actor Cec Linder, who was almost 10 years Connery's senior, and who played Leiter as more of a bureaucrat from another era. But why the change? Was it just that Guy Hamilton, who replaced "Dr. No" and "From Russia With Love" director Terrence Young, wanted to take the character in a new direction? Or was there more to it?

Modern audiences will be much more familiar with Jeffrey Wright's Felix Leiter, who by the end of Daniel Craig's run as Bond in "No Time To Die" had become about as close a friend as 007 has ever had. Appearing three times as Bond's CIA comrade — more than any other actor in Bond history — Wright has come to somewhat define a role that previously handed off to six different actors, starting with Guy Hamilton's recasting of Leiter in "Goldfinger."

So what started this lesser known Bond tradition? Well, it depends on who you ask. In the book "Some Kind of Hero: The Remarkable Story of the James Bond Films," Bond scholars Matthew Field and Ajay Chowdhury write:

"Jack Lord, who had played Felix Leiter in 'Dr. No,' was scheduled to reprise the role [in 'Goldfinger']. Lord had signed a two-picture deal with Broccoli and Saltzman in January 1963 but, according to his agent, wanted 'more money and co-star billing'." Lord did not reprise his role as Leiter."

But that wasn't the end of the whole debacle. As Field and Chowdhury recall, Austin Willis was initially cast to replace Lord as Leiter, while Cec Linder was brought in to portray Mr. Simmons, a Gin Rummy player who's being hustled by Gert Fröbe's Auric Goldfinger during the film's early Miami scenes. However, at the last minute Linder and Willis were told to swap roles, with Linder quoted in the book as stating, "[Willis] had a right to be upset. He got a few days on the picture, but I ended up with 12 weeks." Unfortunately for Linder he, too, would be replaced, with Rik Van Nutter appearing as Leiter the following year in 1965's "Thunderball."

The future of Felix

Sources are scant, but there are reports of Jack Lord providing a different take on why he wasn't brought back. The late actor, who went on to star in CBS's "Hawaii Five-O," from 1965 to 1980, claimed he was indeed approached to return as Felix Leiter in "Goldfinger" but that the contract he was offered was restrictive and wouldn't have allowed him to work on anything else while appearing in the Bond franchise. Whatever the reason for Lord being replaced, his recasting led to a Bond franchise tradition of changing the actor portraying Leiter. As it stands, only David Hedison and Jeffrey Wright have played the role more than once.

Arguably, we're yet to get the definitive Felix Leiter performance, despite Wright's memorable turn in the role across three movies. Even though his Leiter became closer to Bond than any previous version, he still wasn't quite as fleshed out a character as he could have been. At this stage, we still don't know who the next Bond is going to be following Daniel Craig's exit from the franchise — only that Taron Egerton won't be appearing as 007 . Until producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson confirm who'll be stepping into the lead role next, we're unlikely to hear much about whether Felix Leiter will return. But if he does, he will, by default, carry on a franchise tradition by being portrayed by a completely different actor following the death of Wright's version in "No Time To Die."

The Flying Saucer was a fictional luxury Superyacht owned by SPECTRE operative Maximillian Largo . The vessel was featured in the unofficial 1983 James Bond film Never Say Never Again and was based on the Disco Volante (from Italian meaning "Flying Saucer") hydrofoil from Ian Fleming 's 1962 novel Thunderball and its 1965 official film adaptation of the same name .

The Flying Saucer is a fictional luxury Superyacht owned by millionaire philanthropist and SPECTRE operative Maximillian Largo . The vessel is utilized as his mobile headquarters during the organization's scheme to steal two cruise missiles and their nuclear warheads; intending to extort billions of dollars from NATO governments. During the course of the operation, the Flying Saucer is first active in the Bahamas , before mooring in Nice , France . It is there that intelligence operatives James Bond and Felix Leiter attempt to board the motor yacht in search of the missing warheads. Treated as Largo's guest, Bond finds the millionaire's mistress, Domino and attempts to make Largo jealous by kissing her in front of a two way mirror. Largo becomes enraged, traps Bond and takes him and Domino to Palmyra , his base of operations in North Africa. He subsequently collects the second warhead from Palmyra and sets sail for the Ethiopian Coast, where he utilizes the vessel's underwater hatch to covertly deploy scuba divers from the ship - transporting the bomb to the Tears of Allah , a fragile location below a desert oasis.

The Kingdom 5KR.

For Never Say Never Again , the unofficial film adaptation of the novel Thunderball and its source material, the villains' hydrofoil yacht was re-imagined as a luxury superyacht and was renamed The Flying Saucer (the English translation of the Italian name Disco Volante used in the source novel). The 282-foot yacht that was used in long shots for the film was known as the Nabila and was built for Saudi billionaire Adnan Khashoggi . The yacht was later sold to Donald Trump , who renamed it Trump Princess . The boat, now owned by Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal , has subsequently been renamed the Kingdom 5KR . [2] These days Kingdom 5KR can usually be found in Antibes, France or cruising the French Riviera during the summer months.

Several persons are suspected and these are, precisely, the passengers of the "Yoshiwara".

Co-directed by Luise Fleck who, with her husband Jacob (who was sent to Dachau in 1938, and released two years later), started Austria's first film company, Yacht of the Seven Sins is a lurid affair, one that rests squarely upon the broad shoulder of Brigitte Helm.

Already very much over being forced into vamp roles by UFA — for the actress, Metropolis proved as much a curse as it was a blessing — Helm would, in 1929, unsuccessfully sue the studio to gain more power over the films she made. She plays one of those very familiar parts in the Fleck's film, here a conniving dancer named Marfa Petrovna. As overtly seductive as ever, Helm nevertheless has a few moments…

Felt like a good murder story with the enigmatic Brigitte Helm as it's main attraction, but I must say that Rina Marsa as the other lady helped keep the interest up in this one. Sadly the ending reel(s) - the final Act.6 - is considered lost and the movie ends with a description of the climax that was so needed at the cut-off point. Things had been establishing itself for a while and things were starting to bubble, but then.... no raid. Well, well.... it was good while it lasted.
