Best Cruising Catamarans

  • By Cruising World Editors
  • Updated: July 1, 2021

multihulls

Cruising catamarans have been around for decades, but early models—often plywood and fiberglass vessels built by their owners from plans and kits, kept the boats on the fringes of mainstream sailing. That all changed, though, as big roomy cats were discovered by sailors who went off to charter in the Caribbean, where the multihulls proved their worth as comfortable liveaboard and party boats.

Today’s bluewater catamarans roam the globe, carrying families to exotic destinations across the Pacific and beyond. Just as with their monohull cousins, there is no best catamaran. Instead there is a wide variety of designs, ranging from small catamarans that offer the ease of maintenance a couple might enjoy to performance catamarans capable of easily knocking off 250-mile days. Today, the best catamaran brands offer a range of size models and layouts that can be optimized for an owner sailing with family and friends, or for the charter market, where there’s a demand for four, five and even six cabins worth of accommodations.

The most prolific catamaran manufacturers are in France and South Africa where yards include both large-run production builders and niche companies building fewer than 10 boats a year.

The best cruising catamarans offer good load-carrying ability and respectable performance. As with any sailboat , a modern catamaran’s design is a result of compromises. Daggerboards or keels? Galley up or galley down? Spacious owner’s cabin or extra bunks? There are lots of options to choose from—and that’s what makes looking at these sailboats fun!

Here, then is an eclectic A to Z list of some of the best catamarans that have helped shaped the evolution of how we live and sail on two hulls.

Antares 44i

Antares 44i catamaran

Now built in Argentina as a full-fledged, bluewater catamaran and cruiser that can be safely operated by a shorthanded couple or family crew, the Antares 44i features a fully covered cockpit with a quartet of big, standard solar panels recessed within the hardtop, one example of a yacht capable of long-range passagemaking.

Atlantic 42

Atlantic 42 Catamaran

Almost 30 years ago, yacht designer Chris White revolutionized catamaran design with the first in his series of Atlantic cats, the primary feature of which was the innovative mid-ship sailing cockpit forward of the main cabin. The smallest in the Atlantic line, the 42 remains White’s most popular design ever.

Bahia 46 catamaran

Fountaine-Pajot has built so many outstanding cruising catamarans that it’s difficult to narrow down any single boat, but we’ve always been fans of the good-looking, well-thought-out Bahia 46. At 46 feet, the boat is large enough for offshore forays and has plenty of volume; with its simple but powerful sail plan, it’s also an excellent performer.

Catana 471 catamarans

Beginning around 1996, the French builder Catana was one of the first companies to manufacture fully found cruising cats for private ownership, and this Christophe Barreau design, which enjoyed a nearly 10-year production run from 1997-2006, was emblematic of this first generation of safe, fun, long-legged offshore voyagers.

Click here to see more cats from Catana.

Catana 50 catamaran

When it comes to speed, light boats are fast ones. And if you wish to save weight, that means exotic modern materials like carbon. Catana now infuses the laminates of their entire production line with carbon fiber, and for this list, we’ve chosen the Catana 50 Carbon, one of the zippiest cats now crossing oceans.

Gemini 105M

Gemini 105M catamaran

Pioneering catamaran sailor, builder and designer Tony Smith launched the first of his 33-foot Gemini 105M’s (10.5 meters = 33′) in 1993, and soon after found a ready and willing stream of sailors enamored of the boat’s compact size, affordable price tag, and such innovations as the nifty lifting rudder and transom steps.

Click here to read about the Gemini Legacy 35.

Gunboat 62 catamaran

Built between 2000-2005, the Gunboat 62 firmly established the Gunboat brand: go-anywhere cats that applied race-boat technology to a world-cruising platform. Hull no. 1, Tribe, was built for company founder Peter Johnstone, who then spent a year-and-a-half cruising with his family, smiling all the way.

Kronos 45 catamaran

French builder Henri Wauquiez is best known for his long career building monohulls, but the Kronos 45 cat, which he launched in 1992, was ahead of her time. Classic lines, the aft “targa bar” over the cockpit, the louvered coach roof windows, even the distinctive stripes on her hull: the Kronos 45 remains timeless.

Lagoon 380 catamaran

No roundup of cruising cats would be complete without several Lagoon entries, and the best of that impressive bunch might well be the Lagoon 380. Originally launched in 1999, and revered for its combination of quality, volume and performance, with over 740 boats built the 380 is still going strong.

Lagoon 440 catamaran

Launched five years after the breakthrough 380, the Lagoon 440 was an evolutionary design that featured a raised flybridge helm station, a unique “gullwing” configuration below the bridge deck, expanded windows in the hull and much more. With 400 boats built in a 6-year production run, the 440 was an unqualified success.

Lagoon 620 catamaran

How big can a production cat, still operable by a short-handed crew, really be? The builders at Lagoon discovered that 62-feet hit a sweet spot in the marketplace, and have sold over 70 boats since its introduction in 2010. The centerpiece of this design is the sensational steering station atop the flybridge, with expansive views of the sea and sky.

Leopard 40 catamaran

With an unmatched pedigree – designed by premier multihull naval architects Gino Morelli and Pete Melvin, built by the prestigious Robertson & Caine boatyard in South Africa, and commissioned by chartering giant The Moorings – the Leopard 40 was, perhaps unsurprisingly, Cruising World ’s Import Boat of the Year in 2005.

Louisiane 37

Louisiane 37 catamaran

Based on the famous French racing cat Charente-Maritime, the Louisiane 37, designed by Joubert/Nivelt and launched by builder Fountaine-Pajot in 1983, was a light, fast liveaboard cruiser with full accommodations that represented a radical departure from the hefty British cats that preceded it.

Maine Cat 30

Maine Cat 30 catamaran

One of the more versatile and clever cats ever created, the central feature of the cool Maine Cat 30 is the open bridge deck/living room sandwiched between the hulls and canopied by a rigid, permanent hard top (the comfortable accommodations/ staterooms are stationed in the hulls). Ideal for a winter in the Bahamas but with the ability to sail offshore, it’s a boat for all seasons and reasons.

Manta 42 catamaran

Built in Florida and beloved by the owners of the over 120 boats built during the company’s existence from 1993 to 2009, the Manta Catamarans range included 38-, 40- and 44-foot cats. For this exercise, however, we’re heralding the original Manta 42, which won the Best Value Overall prize in CW’s 2001 Boat of the Year contest.

Moorings 4800/Leopard 48

Leopard 48 catamaran

Another Leopard/Moorings collaboration built by the wizards at Robertson & Caine (though this boat was designed by fellow South African Alex Simonis), the Leopard 48 was another CW Boat of the Year winner with all the contemporary bells and whistles: forward cockpit, flybridge helm station and solid hardtop dodger, just to name a few.

Click here to read more about the Leopard 48, and click here to see more images.

Nautitech 441

Nautitech 441 catmaran

The Best Multihull Under 45 Feet: So said the CW judging panel in the 2013 Boat of the Year competition, regarding the Nautitech 441. But what makes this versatile platform so intriguing are the different helm set-ups. The 441 employs a single wheel, to starboard, ideal for solo sailors, while the 442 has a pair of helm stations aft.

Click here to see more Nautitech Catamarans.

Outremer 5X

Catamaran

A state-of-the-art all-oceans cat that exemplifies how far multihull design has come, the 59-foot Outremer 5X was a winner on both sides of the Atlantic, taking top honors in the European Boat of the Year competition in 2013, and following up as the Best Full-Size Multihull in CW ’s contest a year later.

Click here to see more cats from Outremer.

St. Francis 50

St. Francis 50

The flagship of the proud St. Francis line – built in South Africa since 1990 to designs by local legends Lavranos Marine Design – the St. Francis 50 is another “luxury cat” that shares much in common with an earlier 48-foot sister-ship, but packs even more payload into its roomier lines.

Click here to read more about the St. Francis 50

Seawind 1000

Seawind 1000 catamaran

Founded by Aussie surfer and sailor Richard Ward in 1982, the 33-foot Seawind 1000 is easily the most popular cruising cat ever built in Australia (the company has since moved its manufacturing and management operations to Vietnam). Roomy and airy, these cats dot the coastline of eastern Oz.

Seawind 1160

1160 catamaran

If the Seawind 1000 was a minimalist approach to cruising cats, the 38-foot Seawind 1160 is the flip side of the coin, a full-fledged long-range voyager. Among the reasons it was named CW ’s Most Innovative boat for 2007 is the unique “tri-folding” door that stashes overhead to open up the saloon and cockpit into a spacious living area.

Click here to read more about the Seawind 1160.

Sunsail 384

Sunsail 384 catamaran

Every sailboat is a compromise, and in the case of the Sunsail 384 (also sold privately as the Leopard 38) that’s a good thing, because designers Morrelli & Melvin and builder Robertson and Caine got the balance just right with this relatively small catamaran. With four cabins, the 384 can carry the same size bareboat charter crowd as her larger siblings, but does so with a decided bounce in her step. Named CW’s Import Boat of the Year in 2010, you can gauge the success of the design by the grins on the crew as they barrel down Sir Francis Drake channel in the British Virgin Islands.

Victoria 67

Victoria 67 catamaran

The French design office of Berret Racoupeau drafted the lines of Fountaine-Pajot’s new flagship, introduced in 2013, a magnificent world-girdling voyaging catamaran. Like other giant cats launched in recent years, the boat features a sensational upper deck with all sail controls, helm and lounging stations.

Click here to see more images of the Victoria 67.

Wharram Tanaroa

Wharram catamaran

No list of influential multihulls would be complete without the work of James Wharram, and while Tangaroa wasn’t a production cat by any means, it showcases the British designer’s respect for ancient Polynesian craft. Wharram sailed this 23-foot-6-inch “double-hulled canoe” across the Atlantic in the 1950s, and sold countless plans for similar boats for decades afterwards.

2022 Invincible 33 Catamaran

  • By Boating Tech Team
  • December 6, 2021

Invincible’s 33 catamaran is one of the most stable and comfortable to run on the water, thanks to the exclusive, patented Morrelli & Melvin hull design.

Invincible 33 Catamaran running in the ocean

The Invincible’s hybrid semi-asymmetrical hull applies the best characteristics of an asymmetrical catamaran with the soft-riding symmetrical cats. The result is a boat that makes sharp turns without awkward outboard heeling. Even in quartering seas, the sponsons stand firm in the slop. Double steps increase efficiency.

The helm station offers three-wide seating with a centered wheel. The leaning-post seat is comfortable for sitting or leaning. A step below the helm adds comfort while standing or seated. The station itself offers massive room for dual 20-inch (or larger) screens and, in our case, a 9-inch VesselView display, an Icom VHF radio and a Fusion stereo controller. The hardtop stretches wide and aft of the leaning post, keeping the helm glare-free and shaded.

Invincible 33 Catamaran helm

The fighting cockpit is impressively spacious, taking full advantage of the 10-foot-3-inch beam. An oval livewell with a clear acrylic lid in the transom is 65 gallons, pressurized, and fed from a sea chest with three pumps in the starboard sponson. To port of this livewell is a pair of drawers ideal for tackle, rope, or wash and wax supplies. There’s also a larger 65-gallon livewell below the sole.

Invincible 33 Catamaran forward lounge

The mezzanine seat (back of the leaning post) is triple-wide, and the seating angle is designed to lean back even when the boat is on plane. Tackle storage is conveniently accessed behind the drop-down seatback and in the sides of the leaning post.

Four fish boxes and a coffin box ahead of the center console offer plenty of fish storage, and they pump out with durable gulper pumps instead of temperamental macerators.

Invincible 33 Catamaran cockpit

A dual lounge forward of the helm features thick cushions, deep bolsters, armrests and handy cup holders. Invincible’s great ride and spacious deck make it a formidable fishing machine, but one that can deliver comfort during casual cruises or long rides to the angling grounds.

High Points

  • Forty-seven rod holders arrayed in gunwales, the transom, and the leaning post and center console.
  • Mezzanine seating converts to a tackle station, with spacious tackle storage in the leaning post.

Invincible 33 Catamaran Boat Review

  • By Randy Vance
  • January 19, 2022

Invincible 33 Cat on the ocean

Invincible, one of the top boatbuilders leading the charge in high-performance fishing catamarans, recently added another model to its cat lineup, a 33-footer that tucks easily into private moorings and offers many of the same fishing features and comforts of its heralded larger siblings.

How the Invincible 33 Cat Fishes

With a 10-foot-3-inch beam and designed a clean layout around a single-level deck, fishing room abounds. Generous rod storage includes 47 holders strategically located on the gunwales, transom, leaning post and center console. The 33-footer also features dual 65-gallon livewells: one in-deck in the starboard sponson, and an oval well with a clear acrylic lid on the transom, pressurized and fed from a sea chest with four pumps.

To port of the transom livewell rests a pair of forward-facing drawers ideal for stowing extra tackle, lines and other gear, while four large fish boxes (two forward and two amidships) offer plenty of fish storage, and the pump-out incorporates durable gulper pumps instead of the often-temperamental macerators. To starboard, a transom door provides direct access to the dual integrated swim platforms doubling as outboard brackets.

The foredeck affords nearly 40 square feet of standing room, an elevated perch ideal for netting bait.

Invincible 33 Cat helm

Invincible 33 Cat Amenities

The console seats three at the helm and mezzanine while preserving wide walkways to transit fore and aft. There is ample room inside for a plumbed head, storage, and ready access to systems. A forward-console lounge sits atop a storage box, insulated to keep food or the catch chilled.

The triple helm and mezzanine seating module sits over a sizable, with a tackle center behind the backrest. Drawers, utility-box slots, and tool and leader holders stash a considerable arsenal, organized for access and efficiency.

Invincible 33 Cat bow seating

Handling and Running the Invincible 33

The 33-foot catamaran boat rides smoothly in rough water, is stable at trolling speeds and at anchor, and resists rolling in beam seas thanks to the Morrelli and Melvin “hybrid semi-asymmetrical” hull design that combines the characteristics of symmetrical and asymmetrical sponsons.

Invincible 33 Cat mezzanine seating

On the water, the 33-foot catamaran displayed superb maneuverability and response. With twin Mercury Verado 400s, the Invincible posted a 6.5-second hole shot, took just 11 seconds to reach 30 mph, and hit nearly 62 mph at WOT.

With a maximum power rating of 900 horses, a pair of Mercury Racing 450Rs or Yamaha 425 XTOs make an appealing option for anglers looking for more speed and acceleration.

Invincible 33 Cat Performance

Invincible 33 Cat livewell

With the hybrid hull styles, the Invincible boasts turn-hugging inboard sponson sidewalls and wave-deflecting outboard sidewalls, so it makes sharp turns without heeling. Even in quartering seas, its sponsons hold firm in the slop. The hybrid hull runs great in a chop and with the addition of double steps to break surface tension and release the hull from the water as bubble streams are introduced under the hull, the 33 Cat offers superb performance in a wide range of sea conditions.

Invincible 33 Catamaran First Glance

  • By Chris Woodward
  • Updated: October 29, 2020

2020 Invincible 33 Catamaran left

Invincible Boats has added to its stable of catamaran vessels with the new 33. The company also just unveiled a new 46 at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show on Oct. 28. The two new models join already popular 35-, 37- and 40-footers.

“Our brand is focused on the serious saltwater sport fisherman, and as such, we believe that the most effective size range to chase trophy fish is 33 to 49 feet,” CEO John Dorton says. “With the launch of our new 33-foot catamaran, we officially have the largest model offering in this segment. No matter how or where you fish, we have a model for you.”

RELATED: Invincible 35 Catamaran First Glance

All of Invincible’s catamarans use the same patented hybrid semi-asymmetrical multihull, which was created by Morrelli & Melvin — designers of America’s Cup and Olympic competition cats.

The Invincible 33 Catamaran features two livewells and four fish boxes.

The 33 is technically just an inch shy of 34 feet in length overall. Its beam measures 10 feet 3 inches — on multihulls, the boat’s beam essentially carries from transom to bow. The new cat features two livewells, one on the centerline in the transom and one belowdecks to starboard of the mezzanine seating, four fish boxes, and additional storage in the bow.

The twin-outboard platform carries up to 900 hp and 400 gallons of fuel.

Specifications:

  • Beam: 10 ft. 3 in.
  • Weight: 9,800 lb. (w/ power)

Catamarans are quickly outstripping single-hull boats for long-distance journeys. They are more stable and comfortable , and some can travel more than 200 miles in a day. In today’s article, I have put together a complete (well almost) list of some of the best catamarans for circumnavigating the planet; the question is, which one is best for you?

The best catamarans for sailing around the world include:

  • The Fountaine Pajot Ipanema 58

These cats focus on speed, safety, and comfort for longer journeys.

This article will show you the seventeen best catamarans for long journeys, and why they’re the best. You’ll also learn some great tips on what to look for in a Catamaran and how to save money by buying a used catamaran. Let this list be a jumping-off point for your future research!

Pro-tip; here are the actual costs of maintaining a cat and here are considerations on how to circumnavigate .

Table of Contents

The Best Catamarans for Sailing Around the World

A catamaran is a double-hulled boat with a deck or cabin area in between (bluewater cat definition in this article ). The double hull design means that the boat rocks less, sits higher on the water, uses less fuel to sail, and can be sailed in shallower waters than a single-hulled boat without worrying about grounding.

Catamarans come in a variety of sizes and can be sail-powered or motor-powered and range from single-person sailing boats to family-sized yachts. Every catamaran design is different, and the twin-hull shape offers many ways to customize the layout of a ship.

Each boat on this list is a larger catamaran (+40ft, more on size here ), so if you’re going to sail around the world, you want lots of space for provisions and rest.

Of course, there are tons of technical specs for each of these boats, but I’m going to focus on the overall features of each of these catamarans, what makes them stand out, and why they would each be an excellent choice for a transatlantic journey.

Antares 44i

The Antares 44i is an excellent option for sailing around the world and was explicitly designed for long-distance cruising. It performs well in any weather conditions, can be sailed easily by two people, and you’ll be able to sail long distances and live in comfort.

Although it can be easily sailed by a crew of two I believe that a true bluewater cat should be set up for single-handed sailing, more on that in another article .

This catamaran features a stateroom on each hull and a forward cabin with plenty of storage space. The living and entertainment features include a flatscreen tv and a high-end deck speaker system.

With this model, Antares dedicates itself to high-quality boats with optimal rigging and engine configurations.

Atlantic 42

Atlantic is no longer building this catamaran, but there are usually a few pre-owned boats on the market. You can also get it made custom if you love the design, but be prepared to spend more money on a custom boat (custom boat also gets custom problems ;)).

The Atlantic 42 is slightly smaller than some of the other catamarans on this list but is a seaworthy vessel. 42 ft is what most sailors I interview ( in this article ) said was the smallest cat to safely cross big oceans. It is also a decent size to counter the risk of capsizing (more on that here ).

It has a forward cockpit and pilothouse, which gives the owner a better use of space and makes the boat easier to navigate. With single-handed capability, one person can sail it easily and let the rest of the crew relax.

One of the best-praised aspects of the Atlantic 42 is its galley, more extensive than most 42-footers (12.8-meter) can offer.

One of the few 50 footers (15.24 meters) that can be sailed by just one person (many would of course disagree on this).

The Catana 50 is a catamaran worthy of an overseas journey. Its size adds to its stability on the open waters and its ability to sail straight through the choppy ocean and windy conditions.

The Catana is also incredibly spacious on the inside, with substantial cabins and showers. The biggest downside to the Catana 50 is its price, as it’s much more expensive than most of its competitors.

Catana also holds up well against some of the fastest cruising cats out there, here’s a list of the fastest cruisers if you are interested in that.

However, if you can find a gently-used Catana 50, you can rest assured that this boat will last!

The Dolphin 42 is unique because of the use of daggerboards instead of fixed keels. This upgrade means that the boat has some pretty decent upwind performance while at the same time being faster downwind.

Centerboards and daggerboards offer some interesting downsides compared to mini keels. This is an interesting discussion and I suggest you read another one of my articles if you want to deepen your knowledge a little.

These catamarans are some of the lightest on the market. Not many Dolphins were made, so they are relatively hard to find. However, if you want a small, lightweight boat capable of going great distances, the Dolphin 42 is an excellent choice.

Fountaine Pajot Belize 43

The Fountaine Pajot Belize is another well-built cruising yacht. Its core is made of foam instead of balsa, which reduces the risk of structural damage due to a rotten core in case of water intrusion.

The design of Belize offers many options for customizability, with large open spaces and a combined saloon, navigation, and dinette area.

There are two styles of Belize catamarans for sleeping quarters. You can either purchase a boat with an entire primary suite on one hull or one with two cabins in each hull. The first option is great if you are sailing the world alone and not expecting many guests, as it increases the storage capacity.

Understanding what factors to consider when getting a cat can be hard, there are just so many of them (such as the daggerboard discussion above), I have tried to compile some of the most important in this article .

The boat also has wraparound windows to increase the sense of space in the galley.

Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40

Fountaine Pajot is one of the best sailboat manufacturers existing today, as their boats are well made and highly versatile. The Lucia 40 is no exception – it’s a smaller boat but has a lot of room for moving around and on-board living.

The living area is remarkably spacious on this catamaran for its size.

The galley and lounge easily accommodate 6+people. The Lucia 40 doesn’t disappoint when it comes to sailing either, as the narrow hulls slice through choppy waters with ease.

Most catamarans today are built to withstand rough weather but that doesn’t matter as much if the crew isn’t up for the task, I firmly believe that the most important thing a boat should consist of, is knowledge. Therefore taking online courses ( two free here ) or reading books ( my favorites here ) is imperative.

Gemini 105M

Gemini’s boats have been on the market for years and are solidly built for cruising. This boat is one of the most popular ever made, I personally would consider something different for offshore cruising, but since it has such a good reputation, I felt I had to add it to the list.

If you want to understand why I am hesitant to take this boat around the world, I recommend you read my article: What are trampolines on a catamaran?

The Gunboat 62 is a great catamaran and set the standards for the rest of the impressive Gunboat lineup. It’s sleek and spacious while being robust and capable of transatlantic journeys. You can easily travel the world in a Gunboat 62 with several people and not feel cramped.

The yacht was made for speed and power and remains one of the fastest catamarans on the market, even rivaling the newer Gunboat models.  GABO

Although the earlier models of the Gunboat 62 weren’t designed for a lot of cargo, you can still find space for everything you need without compromise.

Lagoon catamarans are known for their reliability and ease of use. If you are considering a catamaran for the first time and are unsure about the technicalities of sailing, a Lagoon boat is a great option.

The Lagoon 380 is probably the smallest cruiser on this list, which makes it better suited for solo or couple sailing.

When I go looking to buy something, whether it be a boat, campervan, or whatever, I create a checklist and classify all the things I want either by NEED or NICE to have.

I believe the Lagoon 380 to be sub-optimal for my NEEDS, even though it does check a lot of NICE boxes, there’s a step-by-step article on the NEED and NICE method here .

There are several cabin options available on the Lagoon 380, but if you’re sailing by yourself, you can settle for three cabins and a larger galley and living space. With a smaller cockpit and broader side decks, the Lagoon 380 packs a lot of practicality and ease of sailing into a more compact catamaran.

If you like the idea of a Lagoon boat but want a little more space, the Lagoon 42 is the upgraded version of the Lagoon 380. With all of the same benefits, it comes with more space for cabins or storage, making it one of the best-selling Lagoons of all time.

The Lagoon 42 is also a faster cruiser built for strength. While it’s not the fastest on the market, it works well in choppy waters and windy conditions, making it great for the beginning sailor to go on a more extended trip.

Many people have completed an around-the-world sail with this ship.

Although there is a flybridge version, I would recommend the “open” version due to several factors, some including increased windage and a higher boom. More on flybridges pros and cons here .

For stability, safety, and durability, you can’t beat the Lagoon 42.

The Leopard 45 performs better with less storage weight because of the relatively low bridge deck clearance. If the boat is fully loaded, you could experience some wave pounding. However, the cockpit is open and airy, with devices that block the sun and provide maximum comfort while sailing.

The Leopard 45 is an incredibly beautiful boat,   and has a strong reputation for excellent build quality!

Leopard catamarans are one of my personal favorites, as such I have written an entire article about the brand, so if you want to understand its pros and cons then here is the link . Gabo

Designed in South Africa, it features a high rear arch for extra support and very smoothly connected decks. The galley is large and open, and most Leopards offer a four-cabin plan. If you are traveling with another person, this boat is an excellent option for you!

The Manta 42 is another classic catamaran that you can buy used (at a decent price), as it is an incredibly seaworthy vessel. While still in production, the Manta was one of the most popular catamarans on the market.

It is still in high demand amongst circumnavigators. Buying a used Manta 42 usually means that you inherit some of the previous owner’s boat upgrades!

The Manta 42 also made it to my list of the 9 safest catamarans on the market ( link ).

This blue water cat can be sailed by one or two people, making it ideal for liveaboard couples or long-distance shorthanded sailing. The galley is in the saloon ( instead of in one of the hulls ), making the cabins below more spacious and better equipped.

Overall, the Manta is well equipped for sailing around the world.

Nautitech 44

Nautitech is an excellent brand of the catamaran, with several different designs per boat. The Nautitech 44 has a unique feature, you can have it with two options for steering: twin wheels or a single wheel.

The Nautitech 44 also features a cockpit on the same level as the saloon. The door between the two is more convenient than a hatch and dramatically reduces the risk of water damage during rain pour.

This is also the same boat that aeroyacht president Gregor owns, he has offered some great insights into Nautitech in the book Catamarans (amazon link )

Outremer 45

Outremer is famous for being one of the fastest brands of catamarans on the market. If you need speed, the Outremer 45 might be the perfect choice for you. It has a top speed of 16 knots, which is higher than almost every other catamaran of its class.

While the Outremer 45 is known for speed, it doesn’t compromise on the quality of living.

You can settle into life on this boat with complete peace of mind. Even as a beginning sailor, the steering is simple and easy to use, and the autopilot is top of the line, so you’ll be able to sail across the ocean in an Outremer without issue.

Privilege Serie 5

A French-designed catamaran, the Privilege Serie 5 is one of the most comfortable 50-foot (15 m) yachts available. The unique cabin layout includes the master cabin in the boat’s center instead of in one of the hulls.

The Privilege Serie 5 is also incredibly easy to sail, despite its larger size.

The sails and controls lead to the helm, where the raised deck makes it easy to see all around the deck. If you want to cross the ocean with a full crew then the Privilege Serie 5 might be perfect for you!

Seawind 1000

The Seawind 1000 is the smallest boat on this list, measuring 33 feet (10 meters) long altogether. However, this doesn’t mean that it’s not livable. If you are sailing on your own or with a partner, there is more than enough space to live in the Seawind 1000, which includes the option of a centered cabin or two hull cabins.

Because it’s small, the Seawind 1000 is easy to handle. The mast and sails are all manufactured for extra stability and ease of use.

Overall, the Seawind 1000 is an excellent example of a simple, safe, and seaworthy catamaran.

Note: since this is a small catamaran it will also be more sensitive to heavy weather so trip-planning becomes even more important.

The Voyage 44 is one of the oldest cats on this list, having had its hay-day in the mid-1990s. However, this also means that a used Voyage 44 will be cheaper than a newer boat. If you can find a Voyage with previous responsible owners, you will inherit any upgrades and fixes that they’ve made on top of a very seaworthy boat.

The Voyage 44 has more storage and space than most cruisers of its size and is known for behaving very well in choppy waters.

This catamaran does its job well while providing adequate space for cooking, sleeping, and living aboard.

What To Look For in a Long-Distance Cruising Catamaran

If you are planning to sail around the world, you need to be very careful about which kind of catamaran you decide to use. Many of the things you want in a boat really comes down to personal preference, so be sure you know what design preferences you want before you start shopping!

Size and Payload

The most important thing to consider when buying a catamaran is how much space and cargo you need because the larger the boats are, the bigger the payload it can handle. Decide how long you want the ship to be and how much you’re taking with you.

It’s vital not to overload a catamaran, this will reduce performance and increase risk of unwanted behavior in heavy seas.

Cabin Placement

Most catamarans have options for a “Maestro” cabin placement, where one entire hull is the master suite, and the other cabins are located on the opposite hull.

Cockpit and Protection From The Weather

Is the cockpit on the boat you’re looking at covered or open? This can make a difference on the high seas, especially during rainy weather.

The size of the ship also can affect how many people you need as a crew. If you’re traveling by yourself or with one other person, you don’t want to buy a boat that needs a larger crew.

Buying Used?

If you don’t want to spend the money on a brand new catamaran, I don’t blame you. Several of the ships on this list are out of production and can only be found used. However, for circumnavigation, you do want a boat of high quality to keep you safe and dry until you make it to your destination.

When buying a suitably used catamaran, it’s essential to look at the refit history of the boat more than the year it was made. Catamarans are sturdy, and the general design has been the same for at least the past decade.

If you find a newer, larger, cheaper boat, you should look into its history.

Your best bet to save money while buying a catamaran will be to buy an older, probably smaller boat with an excellent refit history and no serious issues. It will still be an investment, and a sturdy used catamaran will serve you well.

Final Thoughts

No matter which catamaran you decide to buy for your journey, you’ll be able to sail safely and comfortably. Catamarans are great yachts for long-distance sailing, and the ships on this list are the best of the best. These brands are time-tested and ready to accompany you on an adventure around the world!

Key Takeaways

  • Speed up a slow MacBook Air by optimizing its background processes or upgrading to the latest hardware.
  • Keep Wi-Fi connectivity issues at bay by resetting your connection and reviewing your system settings.
  • Troubleshooting hardware/system files, or booting into safe mode can keep your MacBook Air's startup running smoothly.

Apple's MacBook Air is one of the most versatile laptops on Earth. From its aluminum unibody construction to its ultra-efficient macOS operating system and solid-state drive (SSD) with no moving parts, the laptop was built with durability in mind.

Keep reading to learn how to troubleshoot three common issues with MacBook Airs: sluggish startup speed, poor WiFi connectivity, and slow performance.

Slow MacBook Air performance

Why your macbook air slows down.

15 inch MacBook Air M3-2

The MacBook Air can occasionally become sluggish due to various factors, including the number of background processes launched, outdated hardware, excess cached data, and multiple applications running simultaneously.

A tablet in the foreground and a house in the background.

How to repurpose your old tablet into a home display hub

Have an old tablet sitting around? You can give it a new life by making it the control hub of your smart home. Here's how.

How to fix slow MacBook Air performance

Manage background processes and memory leaks.

15 inch MacBook Air M3-6

One of the best ways to speed up a sluggish MacBook Air is to eliminate as many background processes as possible via Activity Monitor . This built-in macOS utility lets you see how much of your computer's resources (e.g., memory and disk usage) are being taken up by running applications.

To access Activity Monitor, click the Finder icon, go to Applications , double-click on the Utility folder, launch the Activity Monitor. You can also press Command + Spacebar , type Activity Monitor , and press Enter .

Once you access Activity Monitor, navigate to the CPU tab and look for processes consuming a high percentage of CPU resources. To close them, double-click on the process and quit it.

To turn off apps with high memory usage, visit Activity Monitor > Memory . From there, sort columns by memory usage and quit/restart or delete unnecessary apps that consume too much memory relative to the others.

Update macOS and applications

One often overlooked reason for sluggish MacBook Air performance is running an outdated macOS version that doesn't include the latest security updates at the operating system and application levels.

To update your macOS to the latest version, go to the Apple menu > System Preferences > Software Update .

To update all applications to the latest version on your macOS, visit the App Store > Updates tab and update all apps.

Outdated hardware

Another reason for the MacBook Air's sluggish performance is an outdated hard drive or limited RAM. Your RAM (Random Access Memory) allows for optimized temporary data storage. The more RAM you have, the faster your MacBook Air is.

At a minimum, you should be running 16GB RAM, which is capable of handling the most demanding applications and tasks.

Note: RAM upgrades are possible for older MacBook Airs (before 2013). Versions post-2013 have soldered RAM modules, so you'll need to purchase a new MacBook Air if you want to add RAM.

Removing unnecessary startup programs and freeing up disk space

Sometimes, your MacBook Air can be bogged down by programs that automatically start upon booting.

To manage startup programs, visit Spotlight > type in ' Login Items ' and scroll down to Allow in the Background which displays a list of all applications that run tasks even when the application is not open, e.g., syncing data, which can bog down your system over time. To turn off each application, drag its slider to the Off position.

MacBook Air Wi-Fi connectivity issues

Keep your signal strong at all times.

15 inch MacBook Air M3-4

Sometimes, your MacBook Air may have trouble getting online. Various factors, such as outdated drivers, router issues, software glitches, or even network congestion in your neighborhood, could cause Wi-Fi connectivity problems.

Reset network settings

Reestablishing your MacBook Air's network settings is one of the quickest fixes for sluggish Wi-Fi performance.

To reset your MacBook Air's network settings, go to System Settings > Network > Wi-Fi . From there, navigate to the Details tab beside your network's name and click Forget This Network .

After that, restart your MacBook Air and reconnect to your preferred Wi-Fi network by typing in your password.

Checking router configuration

Incorrect router configuration can wreak havoc on your MacBook Air's Wi-Fi performance. Issues include signal interference (e.g., incorrect setting to a crowded 2.4 GHz channel), outdated WEP instead of WPA3 security settings, IP address conflicts, bandwidth limitations, firmware issues, and more.

Restart your router by unplugging it, waiting a minute, and plugging it back in for the quickest fix.

Changing your Wi-Fi channel

To change your Wi-Fi channel, visit Spotlight , type in Airport Utility,' select the base station you want to change, and click Edit .

From there, click Wireless > Wireless Options and choose from either the 2.4 GHz Channel or 5 GHz Channel pop-up menus.

Click Save > Update to save all changes.

Running wireless diagnostics

One of the best features of macOS is its wireless diagnostic tools, which help you identify issues quickly.

To access it, hold down the Option key, click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar, and click Open Wireless Diagnostics . Follow the prompts to identify and fix the problem.

Optimizing router location

Another reason your Wi-Fi can become sluggish is the suboptimal router location.

As a best practice, place it far away from other electronic devices that can interfere with signal quality. Also, opt for the 5GHz band instead of the 2.4GHz band for faster performance.

Which is best for you: The Google Pixel Tablet or Apple iPad?

If you’re trying to decide between the Google Pixel Tablet or the 10th Generation Apple iPad, here’s how they differ and what they both offer.

MacBook Air startup issues

The need for speed.

chatgpt mac app on macbook air in front of colored background

A third common issue with Apple's MacBook Air is startup problems. Stalled or sluggish startup can be due to various problems, such as defective hard drives, limited RAM, or malfunctioning hardware that can reduce speed.

Turn on Safe Mode

Setting your MacBook Air to safe mode allows it to diagnose software-related issues. You can quickly identify the system files and drivers that need work.

To enter Safe Mode, restart your MacBook Air and hold the Shift key until the login window appears. When you see the login window, release the shift key.

macOS performs a series of checks during Safe Mode to help diagnose and treat issues. System checks include repairing your directory structure, deleting system caches to remove corrupted cache files, and allowing you to identify defective third-party software and drivers.

By following the steps in Safe Mode, you'll be able to identify which third-party software or drivers are causing the issue and take steps to resolve it accordingly.

Run Disk Utility

To diagnose and troubleshoot issues with your startup disk, you need to run Disk Utility . This utility can repair system files and errors on your startup disk, which can cause your MacBook Air to act up during startup.

To open Disk Utility, restart your MacBook Air > Hold Command (⌘) + R immediately upon restart to enter Recovery Mode > Select Disk Utility > Choose your startup disk from the list > Click First Aid and follow the on-screen steps.

Reinstall macOS

If you feel your MacBook Air needs a fresh start due to persistent issues, you can reinstall macOS.

Once you have backed up all of your data using external storage or Apple's Time Machine, follow the steps below:

  • Shut down your Mac by clicking on the Apple Menu > Shut Down .
  • Turn on your Mac and hold Command (⌘) + R to reinstall the macOS last installed version on your Mac, Option/Alt + Command (⌘) + R to upgrade to the latest version, and Shift + Option/Alt + Command (⌘) + R to reinstall to your Mac's default version.
  • Select Reinstall macOS > click Continue within the macOS Utilities window before following all the on-screen instructions.

Additional tips for maintaining your MacBook Air

Use antivirus software.

Antivirus software is one of the best ways to keep problems at bay.

I highly recommend using Bitdefender Antivirus or Intego Mac Internet Security X9 , which offers excellent malware detection, privacy protection, webcam security, and even remote management on several devices.

Although macOS is more secure than Microsoft Windows, keeping antivirus software handy is always a good idea.

Maintain backups

I highly recommend backing up all of your data regularly.

Two ways to maintain backups on your MacBook Air include Time Machine and iCloud .

Time Machine is a built-in backup system for macOS that offers backups of all your files and operating system settings. It also offers versioned backups, automatic backups, and system recovery in case your laptop crashes. However, note that Time Machine requires external storage.

The second option is iCloud, Apple's cloud-based storage solution. With iCloud, you can access your files from anywhere as long as you have an internet connection. The benefits of using iCloud include automatic syncing, selective backups, and data security with full encryption to help prevent unauthorized access. However, keep in mind that it comes with storage limits. With tiered versions, the more storage space you buy, the more expensive it is.

Overall, we highly recommend using either method to keep your most important data safe at all times.

Clean your MacBook Air

One of the best ways to preserve your MacBook Air is by regularly cleaning it. Try to avoid dust and debris buildup on your keys and trackpad, which can degrade surfaces over time. An ideal cleaning kit should include an air compressor and a microfiber cloth, a soft brush, and safe electronics cleaning solution.

common macbook air issues

Are you a proud MacBook Air user? While this sleek and lightweight laptop is a joy to use, it’s not immune to occasional hiccups. In this blog post, we’ll explore 19 common MacBook Air problems and provide practical solutions to keep your device running smoothly. Whether you’re dealing with charging issues, app glitches, display glitches, or other common problems, we’ve got you covered. Let’s dive in!

Apple MacBook Air charging problems

1 – my macbook air won’t turn on, check power and battery.

Before diving into complex solutions, let’s cover the basics. Ensure that your MacBook has sufficient power.

Charge the battery: Connect your MacBook to a power source using the original charger. Wait a few minutes and check if any lights indicate charging. If not, try a different power outlet or charger.

Hard Restart: Sometimes, the system gets stuck. Press and hold the Power button for at least 10 seconds. Release it and then, press the Power button again to turn on your MacBook device.

Look for screen issues

A black screen can make it seem like the laptop won’t turn on, even if it’s functional.

Check the screen: Look closely at the screen. Does it appear completely black, or is there a faint glow? If the latter is true, it might be a backlight issue.

Backlight Problems: If the screen is dimly lit, adjust the brightness using the keyboard shortcuts (usually F1 and F2). If that doesn’t work, consider contacting Apple Support.

Check the hardware and peripherals

Sometimes external factors interfere with startup. Try doing this:

Disconnect Peripherals: Unplug all external devices (mouse, USB drives, etc.) and try turning on your MacBook device.

Check RAM and Storage: If you’ve recently upgraded RAM or storage, remove those upgrades temporarily. Faulty hardware can cause startup issues.

Troubleshooting: How to fix common Mac problems

Macbook Pro With M1 Chip typing

  • Mac doesn't start
  • Crashes after startup
  • Freezing display
  • Login issues

App problems

Your day begins just like any other. But, unfortunately, when trying to turn on your iMac or MacBook, something isn't right. Either it doesn't start, or, if it does, there's something not right. Perhaps it's running slow, or it suddenly crashes or locks up. Whatever the case, you can't read the tech news from your favorite website, iMore.com, and start your day.

The best Macs are made to provide you with years of enjoyment. Unfortunately, it's not perfect. Problems do sometimes happen. Luckily, you can fix common Mac problems fairly easily, even on the all-new 24-inch iMac . We have a list of the best keyboard shortcuts you can use when starting up your Mac , but if you want more specific help, here are some of the best fixes to the most common Mac problems.

Your Mac doesn't start

There could be multiple reasons your computer won't start. Luckily, there are many troubleshooting steps you can take to (hopefully) resolve the issue in just a few moments.

Check the power:

  • First, hold in the power button on your keyboard for 10 seconds and then let go.
  • Try to start it again by pushing the power button .

You should also make sure the power cord is connected, regardless of the Mac version. Is there power in the rest of your home? If you're using a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, does the machine start with a power cord but not on the battery? Then you've discovered the problem.

Reset the NVRAM (and PRAM):

To fix common Mac problems on Intel-based Macs only, you can reset the NVRAM to see if this resolves the problem. The following steps don't work on Apple silicon-based machines since the machine's NVRAM is automatically reset during the start process when needed.

  • When starting up your Mac, immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys on your keyboard. You'll probably need to use both hands to perform this task.
  • Release the keys after 20 seconds.

If this resolves your issue, you might have to go back into System Preferences to adjust volume and display resolution settings.

Again, this is only a possible solution on Intel-based Macs since Apple silicon versions don't have SMC. To get started, shut down your Mac, then following the directions based on the type of machine you have:

  • On desktop Macs, disconnect the power cord and wait 15 seconds before plugging it back in. Turn your Mac back on after five seconds.
  • On laptops that include the T2 chip, after shutting down the computer, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds before releasing it. Wait a few seconds, then press the power button to start your computer.

If that doesn't work:

  • Click the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen.
  • Click Shut Down... .

Shutting down a Mac: Click the Apple Menu and then Click Shut Down

  • Press and Hold Control-Option-Shift for 7 seconds . Your Mac may turn on doing this process — don't stop holding down the keys.
  • Press and hold the power button as well as the other keys. If your Mac is on, this will turn it off.

2020 Macbook Air Keyboard Diagram SMC

  • Hold all four keys for another seven seconds .
  • Wait a few seconds .
  • Press the power button to turn on your Mac.

Your Mac crashes after startup

If your Mac starts normally but crashes soon after startup, it probably has a software problem. You can try different solutions that depend on the type of Mac.

On Intel-based machines:

  • Restart your Mac by pushing the power button while also holding down the Up Arrow key . Wait until you see the login window.
  • Log back into your computer in Safe Mode.
  • To leave the Safe Mode, restart your Mac without pressing any keys during startup.

On Apple silicon-based computers

  • Restart your Mac by holding down the power button . Wait until you see Startup Options.
  • Select your Start Up disk .
  • Press and hold the Up Arrow key .
  • Choose Continue in Safe Mode .

The Mac's display randomly freezes

If your computer screen suddenly freezes, there are a few things you can try to resolve the issue. A lot depends on whether Finder is frozen or the entire computer.

If Finder only is frozen:

  • Choose Force Quit .
  • Select Finder .
  • Click Relaunch .

To unfreeze Finder, choose the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen. Choose Force Quit, then select Finder. Click Relaunch.

Entire computer

If your entire computer is frozen, you should:

  • Unplug all externals , including hard drives, monitors, everything.
  • Reboot your computer.

If the problem goes away, try shutting the computer down again, plug back in one of your externals, and then reboot. Continue following this process for each external accessories. If your Mac freezes again after plugging back in a certain accessory, you know what the problem was. Contact the accessory maker on ways to resolve this issue.

My login doesn't work anymore

If for whatever reason, your Mac login doesn't work, you can reset it. To do so:

  • On the login screen, click on the ? to the right of the password field.
  • Click Reset it using your Apple ID or Restart and show password reset options .
  • Follow the on-screen directions.

When your login doesn't work, click on the ? to the right of the password field on the login screen. Click Reset it using your Apple ID or Restart and show password reset options, then follow the on-screen directions.

You might also run into issues that are exclusive to a specific app. While errors might differ, one of the following three solutions should help resolve the issue — or at least give you a better idea of what's going on.

Non-App Store apps

A setting in macOS makes it impossible to run non-App Store apps because of security reasons. Luckily, this is easy to change if you need to run apps that aren't available in the official App Store.

  • Go into System Preferences .
  • Choose Security & Privacy .

To allow non-App Store apps to run on macOS, go into System Preferences, then choose Security & Privacy.

  • Click on the lock icon at the bottom left of the General tab.
  • Log into your account .
  • Click the radio button next to App Store and Identified developers under Allow apps downloaded from.
  • Click the lock icon again, this time to lock it.

To allow non-App Store apps to run on macOS, click on the lock icon at the bottom left of the General tab, then log into your account. Click the radio button next to App Store and identified developed under Allow apps downloaded from. Click the lock icon again to lock it.

My app no longer works

If there's an app on your Mac that recently stopped working, there could be something wrong with the later software release. To troubleshoot, you should first reboot your computer and see if that resolves the issue. If not, try and reinstall the app. If possible, reinstall the previous . Otherwise, contact technical support for the app with problems.

What if none of these solutions work?

If you've done everything listed above in this troubleshooting guide, and are still trying to fix common Mac problems, then it's time to contact Apple support .

If you have AppleCare+ on your device, any hardware issue should be covered by the insurance.

10 Common Mac Hardware Problems and How to Fix Them

4

Instagram's Latest Bug Is Why I'm Backing Up All My Stories From Now On

I've covered apple watches for 9 years: here are my all-time favorites, notebook vs. ultrabook vs. laptop: what should you buy.

Some of the early signs of faulty Mac hardware range from misbehaving keyboards and jittery trackpads to power problems, garbled audio, booting issues, and beyond. But worry not, our tips will help you troubleshoot common Mac hardware issues yourself without having to make an appointment with the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store.

10. Mac Won’t Charge or Turn On

The System Information app on macOS Monterey showing battery cycle count for a MacBook Pro laptop

If macOS won’t boot, hold the power button until the screen goes blank, then let go and press the button again. Resetting the NVRAM, PRAM, and SMC could also easily fix your charging problems. To see if you perhaps need a new battery, check your Mac’s battery’s cycle count .

Verify whether your power adapter and cable work on another Mac. Then rule out any power problems in your home by resetting a power breaker or GFI outlet. Your Mac’s power button might be broken instead, so double-check it. If the problem you’re having is rooted in a failing logic board, you’ll need to pay for a physical Mac repair .

9. Flashing Power LED or Audio Warnings

A flashing power or MagSafe LED means dodgy internal hardware—use Apple’s built-in hardware diagnostics to identify the culprit. Hold down D while turning on the machine to access and use Apple’s diagnostics tests . With a diagnostics check finished, you’ll see whether the battery, processor, or something else is malfunctioning.

If you hear loud tones during startup, the RAM has failed to pass an integrity check. Resetting individual RAM modules could fix this, provided you’re able to freely access the RAM modules, which isn’t easy on newer machines.

8. Mac Starts Up to a Question Mark

A woman sitting at her desk, troubleshooting a MacBook Air laptop which shows a question mark on the screen to warn about a startup disk error

If you spot a folder with a flashing question mark displayed on the screen when your Mac is booting, there could be something wrong with the startup disk. Either the disk is physically damaged or your Mac is having trouble locating its macOS operating system software.

To fix this problem, enter the macOS Recovery system by holding Cmd + R at boot time on an Intel-based Mac. If you have an Apple silicon Mac, press and hold the power button, then choose Options and click Continue . Choose Disk Utility from your Recovery options and click the First Aid option to check your startup disk for errors. If Disk Utility found or repaired no errors, you may need to reinstall macOS in Recovery Mode .

7. Mac Doesn’t Start Up All the Way

A black or gray screen or macOS not booting all the way indicates an issue with the operating system or apps that load automatically at startup. In that case, enter Safe Mode to see if a startup item is preventing macOS from loading properly.

On Intel Macs, press the Shift key at boot time to invoke Safe Mode. On Apple silicon Macs, press and hold the power button and select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key and chose the Continue in Safe Mode option.

Use Disk Utility in Safe Mode to fix disk permissions or try to repair a corrupt file system . If you still can’t get to the desktop, learn how to recover critical files from a Mac that won’t boot .

6. No Display Backlight, Screen Flickering, or Other Screen Issues

Display preferences in macOS Monterey with the Default for Display option selected

Start by perusing our guide covering how to troubleshoot common macOS problems with multiple monitors . You’ll barely see any images if the display has a broken backlight, but first check if this might be something as simple as the screen brightness being turned down. If the screen is flickering, boot into Safe Mode and then revert to factory display settings by going to System Preferences > Display and clicking the Default for Display option next to Resolution .

If your external display supports variable refresh rates, try selecting one of the fixed ones in the Refresh Rate menu. Changing your screen mirroring options or unplugging external displays could also help alleviate the problem.

5. Erratic Trackpad or Mouse Movement

Be sure to check out our troubleshooting tips for fixing jittery trackpads and other tips to fix common mouse problems on macOS . It’s always a good idea to try turning off your trackpad customization settings in System Preferences > Trackpad one by one, in order to isolate a potentially problematic setting. It could be something as simple as turning on dragging!

4. Physical or Liquid Damage

You’re recommended to take a few precautionary steps to physically protect your Mac . In case of liquid damage, turn off the computer immediately, disconnect it from power, and unplug any accessories. If possible, flip your Mac over to disconnect the battery.

If you’re tech savvy, and you have the right tools, you can remove the back cover to remove as much liquid as possible from the internal components. Be sure to give the machine 24 to 48 hours to dry before closing it again.

Still no dice? It’s time to reach out to Apple Support ! Apple’s one-year warranty covers manufacturing defects and malfunctioning hardware. However, you’ll need to pay out of pocket to fix any physical damage caused by spilled liquids.

Macbook with screen damage

Optional AppleCare+ coverage includes protection against accidental physical damage at a much lower fee. To buy an AppleCare plan on your device, click the Apple logo and go to About This Mac > Support , then choose AppleCare+ Coverage Available (you won’t see the option if your Mac is not eligible). Or, buy an AppleCare plan online by logging in to Apple’s My Support page .

AppleCare+ doesn’t cover excessive physical damage, defined as “catastrophic damage due to liquid contact or submersion or damage caused by the presence of hazardous materials.”

3. Keyboard Not Working, Stuck Keys, or Keys Auto-Repeating

If your keyboard is wireless, check that Bluetooth is enabled in System Preferences > Bluetooth , then proceed with our troubleshooting tips to get the Mac keyboard working again . Resetting the Bluetooth module in your Mac is usually a good way to fix intermittent typing issues. To do so, run the following command in a Terminal window:

Press Enter and type your Mac’s password if asked. With the command executed, reboot the computer to re-initialize the Bluetooth hardware.

Has the Touch ID key stopped working? If so, follow our steps to fix Touch ID not recognizing saved fingerprints .

Do keys feel sticky? Are some characters repeating? Adjust the Key Repeat speed in System Preferences > Keyboard . If you still rock a Mac equipped with Apple’s infamous butterfly keyboard, a free replacement might be available via Apple’s Keyboard Service Program . While a replacement keyboard won’t permanently fix usability problems with the butterfly mechanism, it doesn’t hurt trying to remove dust from the keyboard to fix jammed keys . Also, consider a cover to protect your keyboard from dust when not in use.

The free Unshaky Mac app showcasing its macOS menu bar options and preferences

The best band-aid solution to these faulty butterfly keyboards is the Unshaky tool, which effectively dismisses multiple key presses. You can download Unshaky from GitHub for free. The app is no longer actively maintained, but still works as advertised on macOS Monterey.

2. Peripherals Not Working

Yes, even peripherals may confuse your Mac. Some of the external devices you can plug into those USB-C or Thunderbolt ports include printers, cameras, storage drives, network appliances, and so on. Start the troubleshooting process by unplugging accessories one by one.

Restart the computer after disconnecting each accessory until you identify which one’s interfering with your Mac’s functions. Try to change the settings on your peripheral device or switch to the defaults to see if doing so addresses the problem you’re experiencing.

You should also test any malfunctioning peripherals in different ports with different cables, to rule those out as well.

1. Mac Restarts After a Kernel Panic Message

If your Mac suddenly displays a kernel panic screen, write down the time this occurred and restart the computer. Kernel panics are one of several signs there is a problem with your Mac .

After macOS reboots, there should be a log file on the desktop. If not, find it manually by holding the Option key while clicking the Finder’s Go menu, then choose Library . In the Finder window that opens, navigate to the Logs/DiagnosticReports subfolder and identify the most recent file with a .panic extension.

Apple’s support agent might request this file to troubleshoot the panic. To review it yourself, open the file in TextEdit and scroll through it to locate the correct time stamp and learn why the kernel panicked.

Your Mac Issues Could Be Related to Software

Does your Mac crash unexpectedly or restart on a whim? Are apps freezing? Those symptoms suggest complications on the software front. For those scenarios, follow the troubleshooting steps to fix common macOS software problems .

If none of the above tips prove helpful, contact Apple’s support department instead. To speed up the process, tell your support agent you’ve already performed all these troubleshooting steps.

Common MacBook problems and how to fix them

If you love your MacBook, it probably kills you when you run into problems with it. Is there something wrong with your hardware, or is MacOS experiencing some problems? What tools can help you find the source of the issue and fix it? Should you take your MacBook to a professional, or should you even consider replacing it?

Don’t worry — we can help! Let’s go over the most common problems for the MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro and what you can do about them. Back up your data if you can, and check out the list to find the right solution.

The MacBook keeps suddenly dying

First, check to see if the battery is charging properly. If it’s not, head down to where we talk about MacBooks that can’t charge. But if your Mac is shutting off randomly even with a healthy battery percentage, that indicates a different kind of problem.

If this shutdown happens, restart your Mac with the power button and wait for it to power back on and load MacOS. Once MacOS loads, choose to restart your Mac again . This allows your MacBook to perform a healthy, full shutdown procedure. Now try resetting your System Management Controller (SMC) . This controls many of the important hardware processes of your Mac, like battery charging, sleep modes, and more. If something has gone wrong, resetting the SMC is a quick way to fix it.

If the SMC step doesn’t work and your Mac keeps on shutting down, it’s probably time to take it into an Apple Store. Depending on your warranty, you may be able to get a replacement.

The startup only shows a blank screen

A failed MacBook startup can show a few different colored screens, and each means something difference. If you see a black or blue screen that won’t go away, that’s a sign that your Mac probably froze trying to load a problematic app or login function. Restart your Mac by pressing the power button for around 6 seconds (if this doesn’t work, try booting in Safe mode). Then try removing any troublesome apps or login items that may not be compatible. A program like CleanMyMac can be of great help when doing this.

A gray screen, meanwhile — which may have the Apple logo in the center — is a sign that important software is failing to work correctly. Try manually restarting and opening in Safe mode if possible. If there are any updates that can be applied to MacOS, try updating and see if this fixes the problem. If not, stay in Safe mode and try using the Disk Utility tool to locate and fix any disk problems that are keeping your Mac from working.

The FaceTime camera image is very poor quality

This is a recent problem noticed chiefly among MacBook Air models. The FaceTime camera image shows a very poor, grain representation of your face, and sometimes its so bad FaceTime isn’t even worth using.

This particular problem probably isn’t related to hardware, which means that your MacBook camera is probably functioning normally and can complete other camera-related tasks. But that’s worth testing. If you can get other video communication apps to work properly, the problem is with FaceTime software. There’s not much you can do here except apply any waiting MacOS updates to see if they fix the problem.

If your video isn’t working on any apps at all, the problem could be something else. Try taking your Mac into an Apple Store when you have time and asking them to take a look.

External devices won’t connect properly

First check to see if the device works properly on other computers so you can narrow the problem down to your Mac. Next, check to make sure that the device is properly plugged into the correct port on your Mac, and that the port and the cable are not damaged or blocked in any way. Finally, restart your MacBook and, if necessary, the device.

If these steps don’t fix the problem, then look up your device and check to make sure it’s compatible with your Mac, and plugged into the right version of the port. This can be an issue with older USB ports and newer devices. If everything seems okay, try resetting the PRAM/NVRAM and SMC to see if maybe a settings glitch is interfering in device connections.

Still not working? You should also take the time to plug in another compatible device into the same port to make sure there’s nothing internally wrong with the port. If there’s a hardware issue inside your Mac that’s keeping the port from working entirely, then it’s time to take your Mac into the store.

The Mac screen keeps flickering

These flicker problems often look intermittent dimming, or even a complete loss of resolution that seems to rapidly repeat. There are a few different things that can cause this issue. First, check for any physical screen damage, which is always a good idea when this problem begins. If the screen appears fine, you can try these steps to see if the help resolve the issue.

  • Reset PRAM/NVRAM . This is often effective at fixing minor flickering issues.
  • Check for any MacOS updates that you haven’t applied yet and update if you can.
  • Are you using Chromium or Firefox? Both these programs have been known to cause flickering issues in Macs. Trying disabling or removing these programs if you have them, and see if this fixes the issue.
  • Enter in safe mode and see if you can isolate another app that may be causing the problem

The MacBook sound suddenly cuts out

First, make sure that it’s not a particular app that’s causing the problem. Do you still get reliable sound from other sources, like iTunes? If so, then the app may need to be updated or debugged to restore its sound.

If the problem happens to all sound on your MacBook, you have a widespread issue. First, try resetting PRAM/NVRAM and SMC to see if this fixes the problem. A settings issue may be preventing your audio from playing properly, and resetting these functions can clear it up.

We go into a bit more detail about fixing Mac sound here , but if these solutions aren’t working, it’s likely a hardware issue. Did you recently bump your Mac or spill something on it? It’s time to take it into an Apple store for a more in-depth inspection.

The MacBook is running very slowly

Many slowdowns are caused by doing too much at the same time and eating away at your RAM , or filling your hard drive so full your MacBook is struggling to read and write data efficiently. If this is your problem, the best fix is a Mac upgrade, although clearing hard drive space and opening fewer tabs at once can also help. If your Mac is suspiciously slow and it really seems like something has gone wrong, there are a few things you can try:

  • Restart your Mac. Sometimes it’s just that simple!
  • Apply any updates, especially if it’s been a while since you’ve updated.
  • Open up Activity Monitor and see if there’s an unexplained app running and taking up way too many resources. This could be a sign of malware or another issue. Removing the offending program should help matters
  • Clear your desktop of files. All those icons are actually a pretty big drain on Mac resources!
  • Run your virus scanner and Apple Diagnostics , and see if they pick up any problems.
  • If the slowdown is accompanied by unusual noises, take your Mac into the Apple store to see if it’s a hardware or overheating issue.

The MacBook can’t charge when plugged in

Start with the basics. Is the outlet working? Is everything plugged in? Does your charger and cable show any signs of damage, or are there blockages that are preventing the charger from properly connecting? Keep in mind, chargers and Macs can overheat and may need to cool down before charging properly.

If checking on these things doesn’t help, apply any software updates, restart your Mac, and reset the PRAM and SMC settings to see if this helps.

If there’s still no luck, press down the Option key on your keyboard and click the battery icon on your menu at the same time. This allows you to choose advanced options in your battery menu, and check up on your battery helps. If the menu says to replace or service your battery, it’s time to take your Mac into the store for a closer look.

The MacBook Bluetooth won’t turn on (or off)

If you are having trouble turning your Bluetooth on, visit System Preferences and choose Bluetooth to make sure all your settings are working, and that you can keep an eye on devices that you have paired in the past. Sometimes it’s as simple as selecting Turn Bluetooth On in this menu.

If you can’t connect a fully power Bluetooth device, make sure your Mac is updated, and restart the MacBook and the Bluetooth device to see if this fixes the issue. If not, we suggest also moving to a more open area away from appliances and trying again: Sometimes bad interference can keep Bluetooth devices from working properly.

Finally, you can try to open the Terminal and manually force a reboot of your Bluetooth. Type the command

“sudo rm -R /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist”

and hit Enter . Enter your password if required, and hit Enter again. Now restart your MacBook, turn on your Bluetooth, and see if it works.

Some MacBook keys stopped working

This is a problem with some MacBooks, particularly the 2016 versions . The keys would stop working, start making weird noises, or just feel off (this may be especially noticeable when the MacBook has heated up).

This is a widely recognized problem, and we recommend that you take your MacBook into an Apple Store and see if they will replace it. However, if you really want to try dealing with the problem yourself, then grab a can of air. Hold your MacBook carefully so the keyboard is vertical, and blow air between the keys. This can dislodge dust and may help fix some of your keyboard problems.

The Mac won’t shut down

It isn’t uncommon that Macbooks fail to shut down because they freeze during the process. After realizing that your Mac is indeed frozen and cannot complete the shutdown process, you will have to check your Mac to see if open apps are causing the freeze. Open apps that refuse to close down will inhibit your MacBook from shutting down, so you will have to choose the force quit option for all frozen apps. If this happens regularly, try updating all your apps and see if this does the trick.

If shutdown problems continue, try resetting the NVRAM and SMC to see if this helps. You have the additional course of action to employ a more profound troubleshooting endeavor by running Apple Diagnostics . If Apple Diagnostics doesn’t resolve your shutdown impediments, you can switch to Safe Mode , then try reinitiating your Mac.

Finally, try heading to System Preferences , go to Security & Privacy , and head to FileVault . Make sure you have switched FileVault off. It’s a common occurrence for shutting down to encounter stalls due to FileVault.

As spotted by the folks at iMore, the macOS Sonoma 14.6 update released on July 29 has added support for two external displays on the M3 MacBook Pro. People have been waiting for this since the M3 MacBook Air launched in March with this feature, and now it's finally here.

Apple confirmed its intentions to bring this update to the M3 MacBook Pro around the time the M3 Air launched, but it's unknown why it took so long. The feature shares the same limitation as the M3 Air -- you can only use two external displays while the laptop is closed. This is different from models using the M1 Pro, M2 Pro, or M3 Pro level chips that can handle two external monitors and the native display all at once.

NotchNook is a new app that takes your useless old MacBook notch and transforms it into an expanding utility tab -- a Dynamic Island, if you will. The notches on iPhone and MacBook screens always have and always will be controversial, but until Apple gives us a better option, we might as well make the most of it.

And that is clearly the aim of this app -- after all, why should the iPhones be the only one with a Dynamic Island? You can even make use of this app if you don't have a notch on your MacBook, in which case you can make the "notch" tab much smaller if you want to.

The M5 MacBook Pro isn't due out until 2025, but we're already hearing more about what new features might be coming to it. According to the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will be using a new supplier for its camera starting in 2025.

As reported on by MacRumors, Kuo states in a Medium post that the Chinese manufacturer Sunny Optical will be taking the place of both LG Innotek and Sharp, the current suppliers used for MacBook Pro webcams.

Sudden and frequent restarts, freezes and app crashes, declining battery life, your mac won't boot, erratic fans, strange led behavior, and power issues, your mac forgets settings, your mac is overheating, your mac doesn't shut down properly, get help from apple.

Does your Mac crash a lot? Have you noticed constant fan noise or battery issues? Your Mac could have a problem, but the solution might be easy! Let's look at some common Mac issues and how you can fix them.

Your Computer Restarted Because of a Problem Error

Sudden and frequent restarts, particularly those accompanied by an onscreen warning, are known as kernel panics. This is the Apple equivalent of Microsoft's Blue Screen of Death , and you often see the "Your computer was restarted because of a problem" error when your machine reboots.

Many things can cause a kernel panic. It could indicate a problem with hardware, such as RAM or CPU. An unreliable peripheral you have connected to your Mac can also cause a kernel panic, or it could simply be a case of low disk space. Kernel panics happen occasionally, but if you aren't experiencing them frequently (multiple times per week), you shouldn't worry too much about it.

If your Mac has regular kernel panics, try these possible fixes:

  • Remove any peripherals that might be causing the issue.  For example, if the panics only happen when your webcam is plugged in, run your machine without it for a week, and see how things go.
  • Check whether you have enough free space.  If you need more space, you can delete files to create more .
  • Run  memtest86  to test your Mac's memory.  You'll need to  create a bootable USB flash drive and test your computer's memory outside the macOS environment. If you find any issues with RAM, you can try replacing it where possible.
  • Run Apple Diagnostics.  To do this, press and hold the D key while you boot your Mac, and then see if any hardware issues are detected.
  • Boot into Safe Mode .  Press and hold the Shift key while your system starts to boot into Safe Mode. See if the problem persists. Safe Mode excludes any third-party kernel extensions, which could be causing the issue. It will also scan your volume for errors and fix anything it finds.
  • Reinstall macOS from scratch . This is the nuclear option, but it will likely clear any software that's causing the issue.

Apple's Spinning Pinwheel of Death

Do you regularly see the spinning pinwheel of death? Are apps unresponsive, sluggish, or crashing altogether? Does your Mac suddenly freeze for no reason?

Many things could cause these issues, but some are more common than others. Low disk space often causes performance issues, particularly when you wake your Mac from Sleep Mode. Issues with memory and storage, or simply a machine that bites off more than it can chew, could also be to blame.

If you're experiencing these issues, try these possible fixes:

  • Create more disk space.  You might just need to give macOS some room to breathe. Try to keep around 10 GB of free space on your drive for macOS housekeeping duties. You can delete and move files to free up more space on your Mac.
  • Run memtest86 to check your Mac's memory for issues. You can also press and hold the D key while your Mac boots to run Apple Diagnostics and scan for other hardware issues.
  • Run Disk Utility. If your machine has a hard drive, launch Disk Utility, select the drive, and then click "Verify Disk." If you see any errors, click "Repair Disk." This can isolate bad sectors, so macOS knows not to store data in those sections of the drive (a common cause for the pinwheel of death).
  • Reinstall macOS.  This will remove any software-related issues and free up a ton of space. Your Mac should then perform at the fastest speeds it can manage.
  • Delete resource-intensive apps.  If you suspect the issues are caused by aging hardware, ditch apps like Chrome for lighter-weight options, like Safari. Try using SimpleNote and GIMP instead of Evernote and Photoshop.

Service Battery Warning on MacBook Pro

Batteries don't last forever . Over time, they all exhibit signs of aging. For example, your device won't run as long on a single charge, and, sometimes, it will barely hold a charge at all. There's one very clear course of action in this case, but it's not the only thing you can try.

Power issues can also point to problems with the System Management Controller (SMC). This chip in Intel-based Macs is responsible for low-level operations, including charging LED behavior and fan control.

If you've noticed battery issues, try these possible fixes:

  • Check the health of the battery. The most common cause of poor battery life is that it's in poor condition. Fortunately,  macOS can tell you exactly what condition your battery is in , how many charge and discharge cycles it's gone through, and whether it's time to replace it .
  • Reset the System Management Controller (SMC). If the battery's in good condition, resetting the SMC might resolve some power-related issues, like a Mac that won't charge.
  • Extend your Mac's battery.  This is a good idea if you regularly use your Mac for long periods without a main power source.
  • Adjust your habits when you use battery power. Start Activity Monitor and click the "Energy" tab to see which apps use your battery. Perform tasks like video and photo editing only when your Mac is plugged into a power source. Use Safari for web browsing---it's much more efficient than Chrome or Firefox.

A power cable connected to a MacBook.

Many of us panic when our computers don't boot correctly. You might see a plain black or gray screen, a black screen with a question mark, or an error message about an issue your machine is having.

Like system crashes, there are many reasons why a Mac might appear to be DOA. It could be an issue with a cable, the SMC, a software update, or a botched OS upgrade.

If your Mac isn't booting properly, try these possible fixes:

  • Check the cables.  Make sure everything is plugged in and that the socket is switched on at the wall (if applicable). It's always worth it to check this first.
  • Boot into Safe Mode.  To do this, press and hold the Shift key while your Mac boots. Safe Mode will verify your disk, and then start your machine with the bare minimum it needs to function. You can then try to restart normally.
  • Run through our checklist.   We've covered this particular problem in-depth before . If the basic troubleshooting steps in this article don't work, move on to others you can try.
  • Reinstall macOS. When all else fails, you can boot into Recovery Mode and reinstall the OS from scratch.

Related: What to Do When Your Mac Won't Turn on

The System Management Controller (SMC) is responsible for low-level operations that can't necessarily rely on the main operating system. These operations occur before the OS even boots, and, on Intel-based Macs, the SMC chip controls them.

If the SMC has a problem, you might encounter fans that constantly run, battery and indicator LEDs that misbehave, or keyboard backlights that don't respond to controls. You might also experience power issues, like sudden shutdowns and a refusal to power on.

The SMC can also cause issues with battery charging, external peripherals not being detected, and poor performance, even under a low CPU load. These issues are mostly just irritating, but some can seriously impact how you use your machine.

Fortunately, the fix for this relatively straight-forward; just follow these instructions to reset your Mac's SMC.

Keyboard Shortcut for Resetting PRAM/NVRAM on a Mac

When your Mac is shut down, many settings, like the current resolution, which startup disk the machine uses, your local time zone, and the volume are all stored in the Nonvolatile Random Access Memory (NVRAM) or Parameter RAM (PRAM).

Occasionally, things go wrong, and these settings are lost. Your Mac might boot from a different startup disk than normal, or you might constantly have to reset the time and resolution after the system boots.

To fix these issues, you need to reset the NVRAM/PRAM on your Mac .

If your Mac is overheating, it's pretty obvious because it will feel hot. Further signs include thermal throttling (when macOS limits the speed of your CPU to generate less heat) and random restarts. To check the internal temperature, you can install an app like smcFanControl .

Aside from using your Mac in very hot conditions, overheating might signal a more serious problem you shouldn't ignore. If there's a problem with the internal cooling or temperature sensors, and you continue to use your Mac, you could damage it. Hardware and heat don't mix.

If your Mac is overheating, try these possible fixes:

  • Reset the SMC.  Because it controls the fans, this could potentially solve your problem.
  • Take it in for repairs . If you don't hear any fan noise, it's possible there's a problem with the cooling system or temperature sensor in your Mac. If this is the case, take your computer to a technician, as continued use could damage your machine.

Restart Your Mac

A Mac that won't shut down is not as common or panic-inducing as one that won't boot. However, if this happens frequently, it's likely third-party software is running in the background and blocking the shutdown procedure.

If your Mac doesn't shut down, try these possible fixes:

  • Quit any open apps. You might need to force quit some apps that have crashed. You might also want to use Activity Monitor to check for processes that aren't responding . After you close everything, try to shut down your Mac again.
  • Unplug any peripherals.  Remember to safely eject any external drives before you unplug them.
  • Force your Mac to shut down. Press and hold the Power button (or the Touch ID fingerprint reader) until the screen goes black.
  • Try the suggestions on our checklist.  If the suggestions above don't fix the problem, try the troubleshooting steps outlined in our previous article on this topic.

Even if your Mac is outside of its warranty period and not covered by AppleCare, you can still take your Mac to Apple store and get some help. A technician can run model-specific diagnostics on your device to detect any hardware issues. Outside of downloading leaked copies of these diagnostic tools, there's not much else you can do.

Apple will let you know if any repairs need to be done, and you can decide if it's worth it. Depending on the cost, it might be better to upgrade to a new model. Apple won't charge you anything unless you agree to the repair or hardware replacement.

How to fix a Mac that won’t boot or gets stuck on the loading bar

By Mike Peterson 16 comments Last updated August 10, 2019

A Mac that won’t boot is a pretty useless Mac. But the situation gets worse if you have tons of data that hasn’t been backed up yet. So what do you do in these situations?

  • Mac Running Slow? Selling? How-To Reset MacBook Pro
  • My Mac Won’t Start or Boot: How To Fix White Screen
  • Fix a MacBook that keeps powering off or restarting randomly

It’s tough to say. There could be a variety of problems causing a Mac’s boot process to fail or for the boot process to get “stuck” on the loading bar. The issue is likely fixable, but it may not be the simplest fix in all cases. Either way, here are the troubleshooting steps you should take to fix a Mac that won’t boot.

My Mac won’t turn on — now what?

Try safe mode, reset nvram and pram, use disk utility in recovery mode, reset system management controller, restore from time machine, reinstall macos, if all else fails…, a few things to try in the future.

This may sound obvious, but check to see if your Mac has power or if its battery needs charging.

For desktop Macs, a cable may have come unplugged. For older MacBook models, a degraded battery could cause problems that make it appear like it won’t boot.

One of the first things to try when a Mac won’t load into macOS is to simply boot into Safe Mode.

  • Shutdown your computer. If it’s off, skip to the next step.
  • Press and hold the Shift key.
  • Power up your computer.
  • Once you see the Apple logo, release the Shift key.

If you Mac successfully boots into Safe Mode, it may have resolved whatever boot issue it was experience. Try restarting your Mac at this point.

The next thing is try is to reset your NVRAM or PRAM . This is a basic troubleshooting techniques that can fix a slew of issues on your Mac.

macOS Could Not Be Installed, How-To Fix

  • Shut down your Mac.
  • Power your Mac back up.
  • Immediately press and hold these four keys: Option + Command + P + R.
  • Make sure to hold the keys for at least 20 seconds. On some Macs, you may hear a startup sound play twice or the Apple logo appear and reappear twice.

If this successfully fixed your problem, make sure to go back into System Preferences and readjust anything that was reset. That could include time zone, resolution and sound volume.

  • MacBook Will Not Start Up After macOS Update, How-To Fix

macOS Recovery

If your Mac is booting up but is stalling on the progress bar or just won’t load into macOS, then there’s likely a software issue.

One of the first things you should do is boot into Recovery Mode and try to repair your primary drive using Disk Utility. Here’s how.

  • Make sure your Mac is shut down.
  • Hold down the Command + R keys.
  • Power up your MAc.
  • At this point, the Apple logo should pop up on your display.
  • Once you see the Recovery Mode pop up, select Disk Utility from the OS X Utilities menu.
  • Select the disk or partition that you have macOS installed on. (If you haven’t messed with this at all, there should only be one.)
  • Click on First Aid in the top menu bar.

Once the repair process completes, you’ll want to restart your Mac to see if it fixed the issue.

Another more in-depth troubleshooting method involves resetting your Mac’s System Management Controller. If none of the methods above worked, then this may be a good option to try next.

It is a fairly lengthy lengthy process, and may removing your MacBook’s battery or unplugging your desktop Mac’s power cable.

In fact, because it varies depending on what Mac model you have, it’s a bit too of a process to fit here. We recommend going to Apple’s support document on the subject.

  • How to reset the System Management Controller on your Mac (Apple.com site)

You can also try restoring form a previous Time Machine backup to see if that deals with the issue.

  • Plug your Time Machine drive into your Mac
  • Power up your Mac.
  • Once you see the Recovery Mode pop up, select Restore From Time Machine Backup.

If worst comes to worst, you may need to reinstall macOS . This doesn’t necessarily have to involve wiping your disk, however.

  • Once you see the Recovery Mode pop up, select Reinstall from the OS X Utilities menu.
  • Recovery Mode will then guide you through the rest of the process.

macOS Recovery 2

It’s worth noting that you’ll be given the choice to erase your disk or not. While erasing will delete all of your data, it may also be more effective in dealing with software-based problems.

If you have a recent Time Machine backup, we recommend wiping your disk. If you just need to recover some data off your drive, then reinstalling macOS without wiping your disk may be the better option.

If none of the above methods work, then there is likely a deeper issue that isn’t necessarily user-fixable.

In these cases, we recommend taking your Mac or MacBook to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. The staff there will be able to help diagnose — and hopefully — fix any more serious software or hardware issues.

You can set up a Genius Bar appointment using this link .

There are a number of things that may cause boot problems. Here are a few common culprits that we’ve noticed.

  • Avoid bloatware. Items like Mac disk cleaners and other system maintenance tools are generally not necessary on macOS. Worse still, some of these tools can damage your MacBook’s software.
  • Be careful with dual-booting. The boot loader in macOS is fairly finicky. If you try to install any other operating systems in dual-boot mode, you can damage the boot loader. If you have to run another OS on your Mac, try using a virtual machine or booting from a USB device.
  • Restart your Mac periodically. According to a couple of user reports, this issue popped up when a Mac that hasn’t been restarted for a while is rebooted. While we can’t verify whether this causes the issue, it’s probably smart to restart your Mac every now and then.

Were you able to use the tips to fix the issues on your Mac? Let us know using the comments below.

Ok, it was first stuck on black screen with apple logo and sometimes would only progress slowly to halfway or not at all. Used the ctrl+option+P+R and got it to login screen. Input my password and now nothing. It won’t do anything after that. What do I do now?

UNSUCCESSFUL. I was prompted to install new OS — not sure which one. Apple logo and loading bar appeared and began loading.

I returned to my computer hours later to find the loading bar stopped 1/4 inch before the end. I went to “How to fix a Mac that won’t boot up or gets stuck.”

Tried all options and nothing worked.

I have a 25″ desktop that about 3 years old.

Essential Information on Replacing the Logic Board in Your Apple Ultralight Laptop

Essential guide to smooth macbook air logic board replacement.

The Apple MacBook Air is a popular ultraportable laptop known for its thin and lightweight design. The logic board is a crucial component responsible for the laptop’s functionality. If this component fails, replacement may be the only solution to restore the device’s operability. Here is everything you need to know to ensure a smooth MacBook Air logic board replacement process.

Signs of Logic Board Failure

Several indicators suggest that your MacBook Air’s logic board may be malfunctioning:

  • The laptop does not power on, even when the battery is charged and connected to power.
  • Screen artifacts appear, such as lines, pixels, or image distortions.
  • Random system reboots and freezes occur without apparent cause.
  • No response to peripheral device connections, such as a mouse or keyboard.
  • Power and battery charging issues arise.

If you encounter one or more of these signs, there is a high probability that your MacBook Air’s logic board is faulty and requires replacement.

Preparing for Logic Board Replacement

Before replacing the logic board, gather all the necessary tools and equipment. You will need:

  • A set of screwdrivers (Phillips and flathead) for disassembling the laptop.
  • Plastic spudgers or guitar picks for separating clips and connectors.
  • An anti-static wrist strap to protect components from static electricity.
  • An organized and clean workspace with adequate lighting.

Selecting a compatible logic board for your MacBook Air model is also crucial. Ensure the chosen board has the same size, connectors, and specifications as the original. Purchase parts only from reputable suppliers to avoid compatibility and quality issues.

Before beginning the work, all essential data must be backed up to an external storage device. This will help prevent data loss in the event of complications during the logic board replacement.

Logic Board Replacement Process

Follow these steps to install the new board:

  • To avoid component damage during replacement, disconnect the laptop battery by detaching the battery connector from the logic board.
  • Remove the bottom cover of the MacBook Air by unscrewing all screws around the perimeter. Carefully lift the cover, taking care not to damage internal components.
  • Gently disconnect all cables and connectors attached to the logic board. These may include cables for the display, keyboard, touchpad, speakers, etc. Remember or photograph the location of all cables for reassembly.
  • Remove the old logic board from the laptop chassis. Unscrew the screws holding the board in place and carefully extract it from the connectors.
  • Install the new logic board, aligning all mounting holes and connectors. Ensure the board sits evenly in its place without any misalignment.
  • Reconnect all cables and connectors, observing their correct orientation. Be attentive, and do not apply excessive force to avoid damaging the contacts.
  • Replace the bottom cover of the laptop and secure the screws. Verify that the cover fits tightly against the chassis without any gaps.

Testing and Configuration After Replacement

After replacing the logic board, conduct testing and configuration to ensure proper functionality.

First, verify the operation of the main components:

  • Power on the laptop and check if the operating system boots.
  • Test the display for artifacts, dead pixels, or incorrect color reproduction.
  • Verify keyboard and touchpad functionality by pressing keys and performing gestures.
  • Ensure speakers produce sound without distortion and at sufficient volume.

Next, check the functionality of all ports and connectors:

  • Connect external devices such as a mouse, keyboard, or flash drive to USB ports and ensure the system recognizes them.
  • Test the Thunderbolt port by connecting a compatible device or external monitor.
  • Check the headphone jack by connecting headphones and playing audio.

After verifying hardware components, proceed with software configuration:

  • Update the macOS to the latest version to obtain all necessary drivers and bug fixes.
  • If available separately, install the latest drivers for the graphics chip, sound card, and other components.
  • Before replacing the logic board, restore data from the backup created. This may include documents, photos, videos, and other important files.

Potential Issues and Solutions

When replacing the logic board, some issues may arise that require additional attention:

  • Incompatibility of the new logic board with your MacBook Air model. If the laptop does not turn on or functions incorrectly after replacement, ensure you purchased the correct board corresponding to your model and year of manufacture.
  • Component damage due to careless replacement. Be cautious when disassembling and reassembling the laptop to avoid damaging cables, connectors, or other fragile elements. Follow instructions and use appropriate tools.
  • Post-replacement issues include no sound, non-functioning ports, or incorrect display operation. Carefully check that all cables and connectors are correctly connected. If the problem persists, additional diagnostics or a repeat logic board replacement may be necessary.

If you are unsure of your skills or encounter difficulties during replacement, it is best to consult professionals at a service center. Specialists can perform quality diagnostics, replacement, and configuration of your MacBook Air, ensuring its reliable operation in the future.

Remember that prevention and timely problem-solving are key to the long and trouble-free operation of your Apple MacBook Air laptop.

No, throttling and overheating isn’t a problem on M2 MacBook Air

Roman Loyola

Apple’s release of the new MacBook Air was highly anticipated, mostly for two reasons: its highly anticipated redesign and the introduction of the M2 processor, the next generation of Apple’s M-series of chips. As expected, the reviews for the M2 MacBook Air have been favorable, with Macworld’s Jason Cross calling it “a success” and “delightful everyday computer for most users.”

But the praise for the MacBook Air has been overshadowed by reports of throttled performance. Article after article warns of a performance “ shortcoming ,” “ severe ” throttling, and how it “ can’t handle the heat ,” and video after video demonstrates what’s supposedly wrong with the new laptop. It might lead some people to question whether it’s worth their money and wonder what Apple was thinking.

Here’s the thing: we’ve been here before, people. Back in 2020 when the new M1 MacBook Air was introduced, it made splashy headlines with its jaw-dropping speed improvement over the Intel chips as well as the throttling it needed to maintain a proper temperature under more strenuous workloads. In fact, heat has always been an issue with the MacBook Air even before Apple silicon.

It’s the same story, different year. Why is it news all over again? Why didn’t Apple fix the problem? The answer is simple and lies in what the MacBook Air’s intended user.

Apple 13-inch MacBook Air (M2, 2022)

Apple 13-inch MacBook Air (M2, 2022)

Using the proper tool for the job

The MacBook Air doesn’t have any fans built into it. It’s a passively-cooled machine, meaning that it doesn’t use any special hardware to actively cool it. This is done purposefully by design so that the MacBook Air can be thinner than the MacBook Pro. If the MacBook Air starts to heat up, it will throttle performance to maintain a proper running temperature. This is another aspect of the MacBook Air that is by design.

The MacBook Air is also Apple’s most popular laptop because it’s the company’s most affordable one. Its price attracts what we’ll call “casual” users, those who spend most of their time on the web, use productivity apps like iWork or Microsoft Office, stream audio and video either for entertainment or for online meetings, and other productivity tasks that everyone does with a computer. The most stressful work likely involves apps like Photos, iMovie, GarageBand, or some other consumer-level creative software for short stints.

If you’re using a MacBook Air and you’re taxing the CPU all the time and you get frustrated by it, you know what? You’re using the wrong tool for the job.

The MacBook Air handles these task without any problems–it’s as fast as the 13-inch MacBook Pro with the same M2 processor. It’s the one most people should buy—add the Air’s redesign and feature set, and we think it’s a better value than the 13-inch Pro. If I’ve just described what you do on a daily basis, the MacBook Air is a better value for you. (There is a separate performance issue with the MacBook Air or 13-inch MacBook Pro with a 256GB SSD that is a head-scratching design decision, but it’s not related to the throttling concerns.)

That’s not to say the MacBook Air doesn’t throttle. It does. But what makes it throttle? Tasks that “casual” users don’t regularly do. For example, one report of the Air’s severe throttling involved an export of 8K Canon RAW video . You know what produces 8K Canon RAW video? Cameras that are priced over $4,000. You know who works in 8K Canon RAW video? Video professionals. You know what Macs they buy? MacBook Pros.

M2 vs M1 MacBook Air display size

The MacBook Air isn’t a high-end work machine, even if it does have an speedy processor.

 alt=

The MacBook Air throttles when doing CPU-intensive tasks that are often done by users doing “serious” work, often in a professional setting. This is by design. If you’re using a MacBook Air and you are often rendering 8K RAW video, or producing lengthy high-resolution videos in Final Cut Pro, or professionally making music, or doing whatever it is that you do that taxes the CPU all the time and you get frustrated by it, you know what? You’re using the wrong tool for the job. You should be using a MacBook Pro.

If you insist that Apple fix the MacBook Air instead, ask yourself, if you’re willing to spend on equipment to produce the content you want, why are you skimping on the MacBook to do the finish the job?

Headlines that grab you

A lot of these reports that use screaming headlines about the issue do actually point out that you have to be doing something atypical of a casual user to get the MacBook Air to throttle. But there are also a lot of reports that gloss over the fact that you’re probably not going to render a 60-minute 4K video in Final Cut Pro while you have 20 tabs open in Safari and you’re sorting your FileMaker Pro collection database of 10,000 gemstones. And when they gloss over this, it makes it seem like it’s an issue that affects everyone.

As someone who works in media, I admit, we’re in a battle for your attention, and some outlets are more willing to exaggerate in their headlines than others. (And yes, Macworld is guilty of this too. I hear about it in your emails and tweets.) But most outlets do clarify in its content who the intended user is for the MacBook Air.

The fanless MacBook Air is by design–Apple isn’t overlooking anything. Its target user is “the rest of us,” everyday users with productivity tasks to get done. The MacBook Pro is for users who are demanding of processing power. Get the right Mac for what you want to do.

I’ve spent a year using AI and it’s solving all of the wrong problems

“I want AI to do my laundry and dishes so that I can do art and writing, not for AI to do my art and writing so that I can do my laundry and dishes.” — Joanna Maciejewska

Small robot in front of code in background

I’m old enough to remember when AI was an 80’s Sci-Fi trope. That’s not to brag, but it does afford me some small mental vestibule to hide in as I escape the overwhelming onslaught of actualized AI we face on a day-to-day basis.

From your word processors to your web browsers and even the digital assistants on your favorite devices, AI is taking over. There are no AI orphanages because almost every company is falling over itself to adopt some sort of generative tool or chatbot into its products and services at an alarming rate.

I should know, I’ve spent the last year and change knee-deep in most of it. I’ve encountered everything from image generators and artificial girlfriends to voice clones and LLMs that mimic lost loved ones . Needless to say, I’m no stranger to this super-software, and nor am I some tin-foil-hat-wearing luddite who’s claiming it’ll all end in tears. Just that much of it is… Bleh. Well, a lot of it is anyway.

Once you’ve gotten that new car scent out of certain services, it’s hard not to feel like this rich in potential tech is going to waste on all the wrong applications. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that most of the things we’re offered as consumers are counterintuitive at best, and pointless at worst.

It’s not all bad

We’re living in the age of AI, and we should be embracing this new technology at every opportunity. It’s here to simplify our lives, make work easier, and revolutionize the human-computer interface forevermore.

And to be fair, none of that is out of the question. I use generative AI daily, be it through interacting with Meta AI through my Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses or linking up with ChatGPT for recipe ideas, watchlist suggestions, and the random answering of any of those previous “I should Google that” questions I have throughout the day.

Virtual assistants have been handed their most invaluable update ever by generative AI — being catapulted to Hollywood levels of performance in a matter of a few short years. It’s also poised to change everything about how we interact with our devices, even if the full realization of that is yet to come.

Stay in the know with Laptop Mag

Get our in-depth reviews, helpful tips, great deals, and the biggest news stories delivered to your inbox.

We tend to think of computers as boxes with screens attached. Sometimes they're small enough to fit in a pocket or on a wrist, but they all mostly follow the same visual format. However, with the progression of virtual assistants through AI, we could be looking at a seismic shift in how we view and use our devices at a scale not seen since the invention of the mouse.

That's pretty exciting to me, and I'd want it to be for others too. However, after spending more than my fair share of time with various AI models, tools, and services, I think I’m done with AI. Because a lot of everything else attached to it is total bunk.

But there’s plenty of bad

The upgrade to virtual assistants is only a fraction of the wider generative AI pool — and one of the least divisive elements of it at that. As the AI toolset expands it begins to cover all sorts of creative works that result in highly divisive outcomes.

Thanks to generative AI you can create just about anything. And that’s kind of a problem, creating things is a very human characteristic, and it’s not one we should so freely give up. Especially as concern over disinformation, defamation, and the use of deepfake tech to harass others grows.

Can you trust that an article wasn’t written by ChatGPT ? That an incriminating image you saw online was real? Or that the recording of a familiar and prominent voice wasn’t AI-generated? As models become increasingly sophisticated, you’d be hard-pressed to know for sure.

Even the best can struggle to spot a fake, and even those who know it's a fake can't deny some of the results. The Sony World Photography Awards judges were so impressed with one AI-generated entry that they were willing to grant it an award in the Creative category .

When AI isn’t busy being used to confuse and confound our confidence in reality, it’s crowbarring you away from all manner of human connections. I’m not entirely sure who comes up with the ideas behind what a company’s AI will offer, but who thought “We’ll let the AI handle talking to other humans for us” was a good idea?

From summarizing emails and articles so you don’t have to engage with human ideas directly to replying to texts from loved ones on your behalf, there’s nothing more bleak and depressing than realizing a large portion of generative AI exists as a roadblock between actually engaging with the world around you.

Google + Team USA — Dear Sydney - YouTube

If you want a brief glimpse into the generative AI dystopia, look no further than Google’s recent “Dear Sydney” ad , in which a father harps on about his daughter’s love of running and her idol, American track and field star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.

She wants to write a letter to Sydney, telling her how inspiring she is. Instead, potentially because she’s not actually all that inspired, she outsources that task to her dad. Who then seemingly can’t spare ten minutes to sit with his daughter and work it out, and instead outsources it to Google Gemini, which only knows inspiration through its dictionary definition.

That was meant to be an uplifting commercial. Aspirational even. If that doesn’t highlight the glaring disconnect between the people making these features and the audience they’re trying to pedal them to, I don’t know what will.

We never got to see Sydney receive her AI-generated email. But in a perfect world, it ended up in the spam folder, along with the dozens of other AI-generated spam emails sent to inboxes like mine daily.

I recently saw a post to X by Joanna Maciejewska that hits the nail squarely on the head: “I want AI to do my laundry and dishes so that I can do art and writing, not for AI to do my art and writing so that I can do my laundry and dishes.”

You know what the biggest problem with pushing all-things-AI is? Wrong direction.I want AI to do my laundry and dishes so that I can do art and writing, not for AI to do my art and writing so that I can do my laundry and dishes. March 29, 2024

We’re building AI tools for everyone to use. Just don’t use them.

Making matters even more confusing is the fact that the people developing these tools don’t seem committed to their use either. Simultaneously tempting users to use them for generating writing, images, video, or music, only to develop other tools that can detect when you’ve used them and scold you for taking them up on their initial offer.

A recent analysis by The Washington Post of a 200K-strong dataset of English-language conversations captured from two ChatGPT-like AI chatbots saw homework help and creative writing at the top of the list of use cases. No wonder OpenAI is hesitant to release its own AI identifier for text . That could cause quite a bit of trouble for ChatGPT subscribers.

These companies know all too well that creating text or media that would be deemed cheating or plagiarism is one of the key selling points of their large language models. There’s a reason you can’t ask ChatGPT to write anything saucy, but it’ll have no issue writing an entire dissertation on the breeding habits of the Red-eyed tree frog.

Beyond a few exceptions, I just do not see the net benefit of generative AI (at least in how it’s presently marketed to us as consumers) as I once did. While it can make our virtual personal assistants more personal, it’s equally impressive at making actual people’s communications and contributions impersonal.

As it stands, we could all do with a little less generative AI in our devices, systems, and platforms. I’ll keep hold of the digital assistants if you don’t mind me imbibing in my share of hypocrisy, but you can take back the rest.

On the one hand, we’re supposed to fully embrace everything arriving with this new wave of generative AI tools. On the other, we’re almost forbidden from using them. The purveyors of AI are speaking to us from both sides of their mouths as we’re told about the benefits of this tech while being scolded for their application — getting ChatGPT to help with your homework? Plagiarism. Creating AI-generated images? Welcome to the wonderful world of fabricating and facilitating disinformation.

At this point, the only thing I truly know for certain is that with every passing month, I’m left looking at my ChatGPT subscription and wondering if this is really the foundation for the next big thing in tech or just a house of cards.

However, after several interventions with close friends and family members, you’re now much more likely to see his name attached to the bylines of tech articles. While not maintaining a double life as an aspiring writer by day and indie game dev by night, you’ll find him sat in a corner somewhere muttering to himself about microtransactions or hunting down promising indie games on Twitter.
