Blue Water Sailing School

Catamaran Sailing Courses - Blue Water Sailing School

A catamaran at anchor

Our Cruising Catamaran sailing course (Course A Plus Catamaran) is a weeklong live-aboard catamaran cruising course, offered at the Fort Lauderdale base and the U.S. Virgin Islands base. The sailing course combines the Basic Sailing (ASA 101), Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA103), Bareboat Chartering (ASA 104), and Cruising Catamaran (ASA 114) levels of the ASA curriculum.

We are also one of the only sailing schools to offer a course in advanced catamaran sailing (Course C+ Cat: Advanced Catamaran Skipper) . During this weeklong live-aboard catamaran cruising course you’ll sail from Fort Lauderdale, across the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas, and back again. Along the way, you’ll gain the hands-on experience you need to pass the Coastal Navigation (ASA 105), Advanced Coastal Cruising (ASA 106), and Cruising Catamaran (ASA 114) ASA certification levels.

Please see ASA Course Descriptions for details on each certification standard.

You can find information about all Blue Water Sailing School courses in our course catalog . For course availability and dates, please see our schedule .

Catamaran Sales

Catamaran Company - Catamaran Sales and Service

Well Suited , The Catamaran Company's new team concept in brokerage design, is made up of three Yacht Brokers, a Charter Broker, a Yacht Administrator and a Service Manager who all work together to insure that our Buyers, Sellers and Renters have the best possible experience. Our top priority is to insure that the catamaran you bring home with you is well suited for your lifestyle, not only for today but one that strategically fits into your long term goals.

The concept truly is cutting edge in that it focuses on the strength of the team, customer service and long term repeat business. We typically find that a yacht owner buys a new boat every three to five years. Well Suited takes the necessary time and devotes the human resources to assist in your long term plans. What you need/want today ... what you are looking to grow into or downsize after realizing a dream ... proper market placement ... resale value, etc.

We actually went somewhere (Key Largo), rather than returning to the dock each evening. The course was made to be an adventure, as well as simply instructional. The weather was “made to order” — sun and gentle breeze Saturday through Wednesday, then Force 8 for our ‘foul weather instruction’ on Thursday.

I thought it was an excellent, challenging course. It definitely wasn’t a “cruise.” The instructor expected a lot from the students. I like that.

I have nothing but the utmost praise for your entire operation and the quality of the instruction that I received. Al Hatch is a consummate instructor and brings to this activity a love and a passion that is genuine and expansive. I hope to be able to return to Blue Water to experience some of the higher-level courses of instruction, and I certainly would have no trouble at all recommending your company to anyone.

Sample Week-Long Sail Itinerary

This is a sample itinerary for our week-long Fort Lauderdale course. Your particular week may differ and be adjusted depending on weather and captain’s discretion. This itinerary is not guaranteed.  Read about some of our own adventures exploring the Florida Keys and Bimini Island, Hemingway’s islands in the stream .

SATURDAY, you will board your boat at 3pm and get started with orientation, provisioning, boat systems, and safety. You will stay at the marina Saturday evening, dinner is not included Saturday.

SUNDAY morning, you will have a couple hours of academic instruction before starting sailing. Heading out from the marina you travel down the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) to Port Everglades and then on to the Atlantic Ocean. Traveling on the ICW will give you a practical demonstration and practice with Rules of the Road, Lights and Shapes, draw bridge procedures, and proper VHF radio operation. From Port Everglades the boat will head south, with this day’s destination of Miami/northern Biscayne Bay, typically somewhere in the Key Biscayne area. Anchor is down in the late afternoon and you are free to swim, study, read, or otherwise relax. One of the students will have chef’s duty with another on galley duty. This will change each day.

MONDAY , while having coffee and breakfast, you will check the weather, look at the chart, and plot the course for the day, noting any hazards to be aware of. After an engine check and some class time sailing will commence. Lots of sailing drills: tacking, jibbing, Crew Overboard maneuvers . Lunch will be either underway or dropped anchor for a short break.

This day’s destination is the Elliott Key area. Anchor down in mid to late afternoon, furl the sails and coil the lines, then swim before dinner.

TUESDAY  morning, after breakfast and morning routine, more sailing and drills, ending up in the southern Biscayne Bay/Card Sound/Barnes Sound area for the evening.

WEDNESDAY you will start to retrace your route, heading back to Noname Harbor and practice docking then on to northern Biscayne Bay anchoring off Key Biscayne Bay or Virginia Key.

THURSDAY  morning, you will head back onto the Atlantic Ocean for the sail back to Ft Lauderdale. Depending on the weather (as always) you may be able to get out into the Gulf Stream, picking up a couple knots of boat speed and making a quick sail up the coast. But if the wind is from the north the sail will stay close to shore as you make your way to windward. Pull back into our marina in Hollywood in the mid to late afternoon.

FRIDAY morning will be the final review and test, if applicable. The instructor will review your tests and sign your logbooks. Boat clean-up, showers, and you will be done in the early afternoon, usually noon – 1pm but no later than 3pm.

Common Questions

Sail Monterey offers the following

  • Sailing Cruises
  • Sailing Lessons and Classes
  • Sailboat Rentals

Sailing Cruises are mainly hosted on our 37ft Catamaran. However, you can also choose a keelboat to sail on. Keelboats are what most people picture in their mind when they think of a sailboat. You also have the option to host a special event on one of these boats! Sail Monterey has hosted weddings, birthday parties, corporate events, memorials, engagements and more!

Sailing Lessons  and classes are really fun! Start by signing up for the 2 hour introduction to sailing class. After that, you can get information on joining an ASA 101 class to continue your education. Checkout the “Sailing Classes” Tab above for more information.

Sailboat Rentals  are available for anyone who already knows how to sail or operate a boat. Most of our renters are our students who have taken at least the introductory and ASA 101 classes.

Sailing is an eco-friendly way to see the bay. Our sail boats use the power of the wind on 90% of each trip, burning diesel only to exit and enter the harbor. Meanwhile, other boating trips consume huge amounts of fossil fuels. Also, sailing is quiet and does not disturb marine life communication.

Professional and Safe

Our captains are well trained, professional, and passionate about sailing. Most importantly, they put safety first and make sure that you are are comfortable.

Never crowded

Although our catamaran can carry 24 passengers, we limit our capacity to ensure everyone onboard enjoys space and comfort.

With 267 days of sunshine on average in Monterey California, any time is a good time. During Fall and Winter there is less traffic but in the Spring and Summer it is slightly warmer. If you visit Monterey for a few days, it is almost certain that you will experience some nice weather and some epic scenery.

At Sail Monterey, we subscribe to the notion that our destination is the journey itself. After we exit the harbor, we will set sail and go wherever the wind blows. We will likely sail upwind for half the time, and downwind for half the time. We will ply our way a few miles out upon the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary whiles enjoying the view of Monterey Penninsula and the famous sand dunes surrounding the bay.  If you’d like to know more, read this article written by our very own captain, Dan Porter. Where Do We Sail?

We see different sights and animals on each cruise. Although this is not a whale watching trip or animal sighting tour, we have seen many different kinds of animals during our cruises. We have seen whales, dolphins, sea lions, seals, sea otters, mola mola, jellyfish, sharks, birds and much more. In general, we encourage our guest to focus on enjoying the ride because we cannot guarantee the appearance of wildlife.

Check out our blog for other ideas of what you can do in Monterey while on your visit. We have compiled bucket list experiences to cross off on your travels as well as our favorite activities and restaurants in the local area.  Sail Monterey Blog

If your are interested in relaxing with a beverage and enjoying the views, then book a public or private sailing cruise with us. These can both be found on our home page and you can choose which boat you’d like to sail on.

If you’re interested in a hands on experience to learn how to sail or to have some fun and help the captain, then book a sailing lesson or a private 6 passenger cruise.

Of course, If you are not sure, then give us a call and we can help you decide which adventure to choose!

Yes! From a short explanation of how sailboats work to a full range of sailing lessons and classes, we can help you accomplish your dreams of learning to sail. Your captain would be thrilled to explain the mechanics of sailing and give you a trick at the wheel. Don’t forget, we always have instructors ready to start you on your first sailing lesson. We teach a full curriculum of American Sailing Association courses along with casual sailing lessons and refresher courses. Our licensed instructors have taught and certified boat loads of happy students.  ASA certifications are valid for life and recognized internationally. Once certified, you can qualify to rent our boats.

Yes! Here are the requirements for those looking to rent a sail boat.

1. If you are one of our sailing students, you can rent the boat you are qualified for.

2. If you have an ASA certification from another school, you must preform and pass our rental check out process.

3. If you can provide us with your sailing resume and you can preform and pass our rental checkout process.

If you have little to no sailing experience, you may not be able to rent from us, so give us a call and find out.

Capt. Paul provided an outstanding tour of the bay! Experience was as if a friend took us out on his boat. Excellent directions to the landing point and perfect recommendations for local lunch restaurants. Definitely recommend this tour! - Laura
I had a really nice time sailing with captain Paul Bowker at Sail Monterey. Booking the reservation was a breeze on the easy to use website. I enjoyed spectacular views of the bay while sailing on a nice catamaran. Paul is very friendly and professional. I will book this again the next time I'm in Monterey. - Brian
Captain Paul and Captain Vince are so knowledgeable, helpful, and fun people to be around! Simply a great place to learn to sail! - Aaron
Paul was an excellent captain. We saw whales, and dolphins and had a great time! I highly recommend this experience when visiting Monterey. - Nikki

This is the most important sailing class you will take.  The ASA 101 Basic Keelboat class will be the foundation for all your future sails.  At Windward SeaVenture we use 28’-31’ boats with a steering wheel for our ASA 101 class.  This is important because the reality is many of you want to learn to sail larger boats to take out your family and friends.  Windward SeaVenture gets you started there.  In addition to steering wheels, the boats we teach on have inboard engines, “heads” (bathrooms) and shade from the hot summer sun.  Watch the video to see what learning to sail with Windward SeaVenture is all about. Included in the completion of the ASA 101 class is a special online code for a FREE 3 hour Group Sail where you can practice your new skills.

Course Description: This is a beginners course for first time sailors, or those who want to revisit the basics. After completing this two-day introductory course, you will understand basic sailing terminology and know how to skipper a 30 foot keelboat in light to moderate winds. Learn to Take Command of a 40-50′ Yacht

This is the next step after completing Offshore Sailing School’s Basic Keelboat 101 sailing lessons on a 26′ Colgate 26 keelboat. On a cruising monohull or catamaran you spend 5 days gaining skills and knowledge to competently and confidently handle large monohulls and catamarans under sail and power – returning to the host resort each evening to sleep in an air-conditioned room and dine at local fun eateries, or living, cooking, and sleeping aboard during the 5-day period with one or two evenings at a restaurant as you cruise and learn. In those five days, you earn US Sailing Basic Cruising Certification and US Sailing Bareboat Cruising Certification, ready to skipper a yacht up to 50′.

OSS 101/103/104 and OSS 114 – Fast Track to Cruising® Courses

Stay Ashore or Live Aboard Schedule Options

While most students opt for the immersive Fast Track to Cruising® live-aboard experience, a stay-ashore version of the cruising course is available in certain locations. Some students prefer the stay-ashore version in late summer when the water and air can be very warm, and an air-conditioned room is the perfect end to each day of the course. If you are traveling with family or friends who just want to enjoy the resort and not participate in sailing lessons, the stay-ashore schedule works well for all in your party.  Call 888-454-7015 for stay-ashore date and location availability.

If  You Have Basic Sailing Experience Equivalent to OSS 101 Certification

The final step in the Fast Track program is OSS 107/108 Fast Track to Offshore Passage Making  – a 10-day program that starts with four days of Celestial Navigation while staying ashore, then six days heading off shore and out of sight of land.

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing Between a Sailboat or Catamaran for Your Sailing Adventures

C hoosing between a sailboat and a catamaran for your sailing adventures is a significant decision that depends on various factors, including your sailing preferences, experience level, budget, and intended use. Here's an ultimate guide to help you make an informed decision:

1. Sailing Experience:

  • Sailboats: Typically require more skill and experience to handle, especially in adverse weather conditions. Ideal for sailors who enjoy the traditional feel of sailing and are willing to invest time in learning and mastering the art.
  • Catamarans: Easier to handle, making them suitable for beginners. The dual-hull design provides stability, reducing the learning curve for those new to sailing.

2. Space and Comfort:

  • Sailboats: Generally have a narrower beam and less living space. However, some sailboats may offer comfortable cabins and amenities.
  • Catamarans: Wider beam creates more living space. Catamarans often have multiple cabins, spacious saloons, and expansive deck areas, providing a more comfortable living experience.

3. Stability:

  • Sailboats: Monohulls can heel (lean) while sailing, which some sailors enjoy for the thrill but can be discomforting for others.
  • Catamarans: Greater stability due to the dual hulls, providing a more level sailing experience. Reduced heeling makes catamarans suitable for those prone to seasickness.

4. Performance:

  • Sailboats: Known for their upwind performance and ability to sail close to the wind. Some sailors appreciate the challenge of optimizing sail trim for efficiency.
  • Catamarans: Faster on a reach and downwind due to their wide beam. However, they may not point as high into the wind as monohulls.
  • Sailboats: Typically have a deeper draft, limiting access to shallow anchorages and requiring deeper marina berths.
  • Catamarans: Shallow draft allows access to shallower waters and secluded anchorages, providing more flexibility in cruising destinations.
  • Sailboats: Generally more affordable upfront, with a wide range of options available to fit different budgets.
  • Catamarans: Often more expensive upfront due to their size and design. However, maintenance costs may be comparable or even lower in some cases.

7. Mooring and Docking:

  • Sailboats: Easier to find slips and moorings in marinas designed for monohulls.
  • Catamarans: Require wider slips and may have limited availability in certain marinas, especially in crowded anchorages.

8. Intended Use:

  • Sailboats: Ideal for traditional sailors who enjoy the art of sailing, racing enthusiasts, or those on a tighter budget.
  • Catamarans: Suited for those prioritizing comfort, stability, and spacious living areas, especially for long-term cruising and chartering.

9. Resale Value:

  • Sailboats: Generally have a more established resale market, with a wider range of buyers.
  • Catamarans: Growing in popularity, and well-maintained catamarans often retain their value.

10. Personal Preference:

  • Consider your personal preferences, the type of sailing you plan to do, and the kind of lifestyle you want aboard your vessel.

In conclusion, both sailboats and catamarans have their advantages and disadvantages. Your decision should be based on your individual preferences, experience level, budget, and intended use. If possible, charter both types of vessels to experience firsthand how they handle and to help make a more informed decision based on your own preferences and needs.

2024 A-Class Catamaran World Championships in Tuscany

Less than a month to go for the 2024 A-Class Catamaran World Champs in Tuscany

Less than a month to go for the 2024 A-Class Catamaran World Championships in Tuscany, and the Centro Velico Punta Ala is once again setting a new record for the number of participants!

From  September 7th to 14th , Tuscany will once again take center stage in the world of sailing. The world’s top A-Class skippers will compete in the Gulf of Follonica for the World Championship title in one of the oldest and most active single-handed catamaran classes. The  A-Class World Championships  returns to the  Centro Velico Punta Ala  after nine years, at the  PuntAla Camp & Resort .

With a total of  184 boats registered from 20 different nations , this event is shaping up to be the largest single-handed multihull event in the world this year, featuring one of the biggest fleets of catamarans ever assembled, even surpassing those at the Olympics. The fleet is evenly divided between the Classic and Open categories, with Italy representing the largest contingent with about 41 boats, followed by Germany with 26 entries. This marks  a new record for the Centro Velico Punta Ala , which, after the success of EurILCA and the Finn World Masters, is hosting the final and most spectacular sailing event of the season. The event will feature not only ultralight and incredibly fast boats, but also the presence of  world-renowned sailors , some of whom are part of America’s Cup teams, while others are Olympic athletes.

From young talents under 25 to the more experienced Great Grand Masters over 56, participants will compete for the title in  two categories : the A Classics, which represent the tradition and pure essence of sailing, and the Foil, modern flying catamarans that defy the laws of physics with their ability to “fly” over the water. This distinction between the two categories was established right here in Punta Ala, where in 2015, a historic vote was held during the IACA general assembly. The decision to retain Rule 8, which limited the use of daggerboards, was passed by a narrow margin, stabilizing the future of the class and leading to the creation of the two current categories, now officially designated by World Sailing:  Open (Foiling) and Classic (Non Foiling) .

In both the Open and Classic categories, there are several high-profile athletes to watch.

In the Open category , the reigning champion, Kuba Surowiec (POL 41), is ready to defend his hard-won title. Among the top contenders is Mischa Heemskerk (NED 007 ), a dominant force in the fleet and multiple world champion contenders. He’s expected to bring some secret weapon as he aims for his 4th World title, leveraging his blend of technical skill and innovative strategies. Darren Bundock (AUS 88), a multiple Olympic medalist and America’s Cup veteran, is another key competitor. Despite his illustrious career, the world title has always eluded him, making him even more determined this year. Among the Italians, Lamberto Cesare (ITA 13), who placed 10th in Toulon, stands out, as does newcomer Marco Anessi (ITA 7), who has already claimed the gold medal at the Italian Championships in his debut year in the A-Class.

In the Classic category , Olympic veteran and reigning champion Scott Anderson (AUS 31) will defend the title he reclaimed in Toulon after an incredible 37-year hiatus. Key challengers include European champion Gustavo Doreste (ESP 72) and three-time world champion Andrew Landenberger (AUS 308), who will be competing on a new boat. Notable Italians include Marco Radman (ITA 55), who finished fifth in Toulon, and Alberto Farnesi (SWE 59), who excels in strong wind conditions.

With such a prestigious lineup of participants, the competition promises to be intense and closely contested, with many contenders ready to battle for the world title. Unlike recent sailing events where everything hinges on a single final race, here the champion will be the sailor who accumulates the fewest points overall, setting the stage for what could be an epic race.

To make the event even more legendary is the  enchanting location of  PuntAla Camp & Resort , with the island of Elba on the horizon and a sandy beach free of obstacles or rocks. While there may be some swell, the sea is deep enough to avoid short, choppy waves, and there will be numerous assistants on hand to ensure safety.

This delightful resort, nestled in a fragrant pine forest on the Tuscan coast, will transform into a sort of “Olympic village,” offering a welcoming and safe environment for participants and companions, with the opportunity to gather the fleets on the beach, which will serve as a parking area for the boats. The resort boasts restaurants offering delicious local food and wine, as well as a special program for companions and a fantastic post-regatta program, ensuring fun for everyone.

It promises to be a truly unforgettable event.
