Keppel Bay Sailing Club

Established in 1957, Keppel Bay Sailing Club began with a group of dedicated sailors and volunteers who had a passion for sailing and for the community in which they lived. In 1961, the members agreed it was time to establish a permanent clubhouse and were offered the old skate rink and dance hall, formally located on the existing Clubhouse site.

From as early as the 13th century, the waterway in Keppel Bay had been used as a passage for ships sailing from the Straits of Malacca to the South China Sea. The first English references to the waterway appeared in the 17th century although their small number suggests infrequent use of it.

In September 1819, William Farquhar, whom Sir Stamford Raffles appointed as the first Resident of Singapore, reported that he discovered a ‘new harbour’ to the west of the settlement.

In 1848, Captain Henry Keppel discovered the sheltered, deep water harbour onboard the vessel, Meander. Repairs on the Meander were the first carried out in the harbour, known as New Harbour, where the Tanjong Pagar wharves would later be built. That name remained until 1900, when Keppel, then the Admiral, visited Singapore again. To honour him, the acting Governor, Sir Alexander Swettenham, renamed the harbour Keppel.

The development of the harbour in mid-19th century in Singapore led to the prosperity of the island.

Within Keppel Bay are some of Singapore’s oldest docks.

The island’s first graving dock, Dock No 1, as it was known, was built in 1859. Eight years later, Dock No 2 was constructed, which is today one of the water channels purposefully incorporated into the architecture of Caribbean at Keppel Bay.

Under the modernisation programme for the port in the early 1900s, the 40,000 dwt. King’s Dock, then the second largest in the world, was opened on 26 August 1913.

The 30,000 dwt Queen’s Dock was opened in 1956 and is today the water channel which lies between Caribbean at Keppel Bay and Reflections at Keppel Bay.

The story of Keppel parallels that of Singapore.

With independence in 1963, the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) was formed. The Singapore Drydocks and Engineering Company was set up in 1968 to take over the Dockyard Department of the PSA. On 23 August 1968, the name of the company was changed to Keppel Shipyard (Private) Limited.

Keppel Shipyard’s first yard in Telok Blangah occupied what is now Caribbean at Keppel Bay, Reflections at Keppel Bay and the Keppel Island across the bridge. The shipyard operations have since relocated to Keppel’s facilities in Tuas, Jurong.

Keppel Shipyard is today part of Keppel Offshore & Marine, one of the world’s leading offshore and marine groups with a global network of 20 yards and offices.

Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank. Was it a 'black swan event'?

Portrait of Cybele Mayes-Osterman

The Bayesian set off on a leisurely cruise around Italy's southern coast on a sunny day in late July.

The luxurious super yacht − which boasted one of the largest masts in the world and carried a crew of business moguls, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his family and a chair of Morgan Stanley − set sail from the Amalfi Coast, bound for Sicily.

Less than a month later, the ship had sunk 160 feet under the water , leaving its cook dead and six of its passengers, including at least two Americans, missing and prompting a massive search that has drawn international attention.

Now, experts are trying to piece together why in the early hours Monday the Bayesian was quickly pulled under the waves amid a storm that saw at least one tornado spin up over the water.

Breaking news to start your day smart. Sign up for USA TODAY's Daily Briefing newsletter.

A perfect storm led to Bayesian sinking, experts say

The combination of unlikely factors that could have contributed to the ship's fate constituted a "black swan event," Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told USA TODAY.

The Bayesian was well-built: A 2008 product of Italian ship maker Perini, it was constructed in accordance with international maritime standards and commercially certified by the U.K.'s Maritime and Coastguard Agency, according to Schanck.

The bout of bad weather that swept the area when the ship went down was also out of the ordinary in the northern Mediterranean, "which isn't renowned for prolonged, significant stormy weather," he said.

"The fact that those two elements have then resulted in the foundering of a super yacht is pretty extraordinary," Schanck said. "These things don't happen every day."

After the ship sank just before 5 a.m. local time, 15 people, including a 1-year-old, were pulled from the water. Some were rescued from a life raft by the crew of a ship docked nearby.

Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook and a native of Antigua, was found dead, according to authorities.

As of Tuesday, six people were missing, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Several missing passengers were involved in Lynch's trial on fraud charges, including Jonathan Bloomer, a Morgan Stanley chair who served as his character witness, and one of Lynch's attorneys. Lynch, accused of fraud after he sold his company to electronics giant Hewlett-Packard, was acquitted of all charges weeks ago.

Who is Mike Lynch? UK entrepreneur among those missing after superyacht sinks off Sicily

Tornado formed over unusually hot water

Storms in the area that night may have whipped up a water spout, a tornado over the water , according to local meteorologists.

It was likely triggered by the water's unusual warmth, said Rick Shema, a certified consulting meteorologist who served in the Navy.

"The water spout was an uncommon occurrence," he said. "But again, these things happen, especially in warmer water."

At 83.7 degrees, water in the area was more than 3 degrees hotter than average on the day the Bayesian sank, likely the result of climate change, Shema said.

"Hurricanes can form at 80 degrees. This was almost four degrees higher than that," he said.

The water spout may have spun up when cooler air dropped from mountainous places nearby onto the hot water, he said. "A water spout is a vortex, basically like a tornado, spinning real fast, sucking up water and moisture as the column rises," he said.

Although water spouts only reach around 120 mph, as compared with tornadoes on land, which can reach up to 300 mph, "you don't need 200 mph to sink a ship," he said.

"Even an average tornado, 120 miles an hour, that's a lot of wind," he said, "which would heel the boat over for sure."

Water spouts spring up suddenly, Shema said. Before they strike, winds can be slow, but "once the water spout comes over, bam, it's on," he said.

Before sunrise, the ship's crew may not have seen the water spout coming. "The visibility was probably a big factor," he said.

With the windows of the yacht opened, as they likely were in the hot weather, the water spout could have triggered water that flooded through the portholes, Shema said, causing the ship to sink.

Tragedy strikes: Scramble to find survivors after Bayesian yacht sinks off Sicily coast

Search continues, but shift to recovery phase approaches

Italian authorities said the Bayesian was probably at anchor when the storm struck, meaning it couldn't maneuver and ride the waves, according to Mitchell Stoller, a captain and maritime expert witness. Other ships in the area that turned on their engines rode out the storm, he said.

"When you're at anchor and you see weather, you start your engine and you put the wind on the bow. You don't let it get on the side," he said.

Schanck said another key question concerns the position of the keel, a heavy weight underneath the boat that acts as a counterbalance to keep it upright, when the ship sank. When lifted, "that's going to affect the stability of the vessel, because, obviously, you've now raised the center of gravity of that vessel," he said.

The Bayesian was floating over 160 feet of water at the time, deep enough that the keel would likely be deployed. But the fact that "the vessel heeled over so heavily makes me question that," Schanck said.

The cause of the disaster may not be known until the ship can be examined in more detail, experts say. Prosecutors in a nearby town have already opened an investigation.

Schanck said investigators will have plenty to work with once the operation moves into a recovery phase.

"The vessel is intact and in good condition on the seabed," he said. "There's a lot of eyewitness accounts from other vessels in the area and the shore."

As the search entered its second day on Tuesday, the rescue effort may shift in that direction soon. "I suspect, later on, today or tomorrow, we'll probably see some mention of a recovery operation being stated," Schanck said.

The decision to would depend on whether rescuers find signs of life in the ship and air pockets or survivable spaces, Schanck said. At this point, survivors on the water's surface looks unlikely. "My professional opinion is that the casualties will be located within the vessel," he said.

"There is a risk versus benefit in all maritime search and rescue incidents," he said. "Where we start transitioning to a recovery phase, that line shifts."

Rookies aim for Resolute Cup title

Published on August 21st, 2024 by Editor -->

The biennial Resolute Cup, which has serves as a Corinthian Championship for U.S. Yacht Clubs, was won in 2022 by Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead, MA . Would it be the trifecta of Corinthianism if Corinthian Yacht Club of San Francisco (Tiburon, CA) took the 2024 title?

That’s the plan by San Francisco sailor Daniel Thielman who will be competing in the event hosted by New York Yacht Club on September 11-14 in Newport, RI.

Thielman has been on fire this year on the national racing circuit, winning multiple championships in the Melges 20 class where he’s also the defending world champion. He also claimed the 2024 IC37 National Championship title, but this will mark the first time his club has fielded a team in the Resolute Cup.

With up to 28 teams competing, the bonus for winning the Resolute Cup is to gain entry into the prestigious Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, which uses the IC37 and will next take place in September 2025.

keppel bay cruising yacht club

“Members of our Corinthian Yacht Club purchased an IC37 back in 2023 to prepare for the Invitational Cup,” says Thielman. “After a year of preparation, we’ve assembled a team that is ready to make a qualifying bid.”

Thielman will be sailing with trimmers Jen Canestra and Auric Horneman, who have been his constant and trusted teammates for over 10 years of racing Melges boats together, and Nick Voss.

“We currently race in the Melges 20, Melges 14, and IC37 one-design fleets around the country, and PHRF race our Melges 32 on San Francisco Bay,” Thielman says. “We hope that adding Nick as a tactician for the Resolute Cup, with his many years of junior, college, and adult team racing experience, will give us the edge we need to be competitive.”

While Thielman has the resume, the Resolute Cup uses the Sonar, a displacement boat with a symmetric spinnaker, which is a bit of a departure from what he and his team normally sail.

“Every boat we own, and every fleet we compete in, has asymmetric kites,” he says. “We have gotten in limited practices on J/22s to prepare, but with our aggressive championship race schedule in other fleets, we are mostly going to be winging it with a symmetric kite. I would not be surprised if we have a slow start, with results that steadily improve.”

Other first-time competitors in the Resolute Cup in 2024 include Edgewater Yacht Club (Cleveland, Ohio), Bay Waveland Yacht Club (Bay St. Louis, Miss.), and Charleston Yacht Club (Charleston, S.C.).

A passion for small-to-medium boat one-design sailing is the driving force behind Lee Sacket’s long-standing interest in the Resolute Cup. As the skipper representing Edgewater, he’s excited about the diverse and skilled team his club has put together.

“We’re very lucky to have Jeff Eiber; he is extremely accomplished winning in almost every fleet and can make any boat go fast,” says Sackett. “My first priority was securing him for the event. Lance Polen is also an accomplished sailor, winning the Highlander fleet several times, while Abby Probst has tons of time sailing in several classes, mostly the Lightning. I’m excited about the different assets each individual brings to the team.”

Representing Bay Waveland Yacht Club is skipper Zak Fanberg, who grew up sailing on Minnesota’s Lake Minnetonka, He met his wife Sarah Taylor at the College of Charleston where he was on the sailing team and they still race together.

The couple will be racing with friends Eugene Schmitt and David Blouin; Taylor crewed for Schmitt as far back as high school, so the sailing connection between the Bay Waveland team is tight.

“David and Eugene are both fantastic sailors in their own right, Eugene was a two-time All-American at the Naval Academy, he’s one of the nation’s top Sunfish sailors, and we race Vipers together a lot,” says Fanberg.

“Being in Newport this time of year is phenomenal given it’s so hot down south, so that’s a really good reason for our team to compete in the Resolute Cup! We’re really looking forward to fantastic competition; a lot of old friends from college will be sailing the event so it will be like a reunion of sorts—it brings back memories of racing in college sailing these type of short races.”

Details: https://nyyc.org/2024-resolute-cup

Hosted by New York Yacht Club on September 11-14, racing in Sonars will take place on Narragansett Bay, with the fleet halved on the last day for three final double-point races.

After the fire: St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club focused on revitalizing this coming summer

P ANAMA CITY — In November, the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club building on Bunkers Cove Road was destroyed in a fire. Ever since then, questions have circulated around the community: How did the fire start? Would the Yacht Club rebuild?

The Yacht Club was up and operational for business within weeks of the fire. The Yacht Club is still taking in new members, as well. Members have joined the club even after the fire.

”The Yacht Club is in better shape than people would have imagined,” said Michael Wynn, 2024 commodore. “The staff members that we have are family to us. We believe and give to them and they give back to us.”

Wynn explained that one club member had this to say after the fire: “The clubhouse was just a building; the Yacht Club is about the people.”

The Yacht Club has discussed expanding its sailing center to provide greater resources for the community. The club expects the plans and renderings for the new club facility will be unveiled this summer.

Some of the staff members have left the club since the incident and others have stayed.

“Our staff is smaller now since the fire,” said Wynn. “We have less services being offered at the moment, but many staffers who left the club for other jobs have offered to come back once the club becomes (fully) operational again.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown. There have been different ideas and theories on how the fire started, but there has not been a definitive answer. But there was no foul play, Wynn emphasized.

”Right now, we don’t have a final number on what it’s going to cost to rebuild,” said Wynn. “We have architects and plans on rebuilding. We have members of the community who are donating services to help cut the cost (of our rebuild).”

More information about the club will be released closer to the clubhouse reopening. Wynn said the rebuild will both honor the club's history and heritage and also add modern touches.

Previous coverage: More details released as Panama City monitors St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club fire site

Wynn said the club's experience dealing with insurance after the fire has been good and the matter soon will be resolved. The experience was much better than the ones many people had after Hurricane Michael, he noted.

Wynn also is humbled and gratified by the outpouring of support and dedication from his fellow club leaders and all club members. He knew his one-year term as commodore, which began in January, would be full of challenges. But the club has rallied because the tradition and legacy mean so much.

"People care so deeply," he said.

General Manager - Queensland Monthly Update August 2024

General Update

What an i ncredible Olympics Australia has had with Matt Wearn winning Gold in the ILCA7’s and Grae Morris winning Silver in the IQ Foil. The new format for the IQ foil has certainly had an impact and is a hot topic of conversation. Brei Whitehead from Townsville Yacht Club finished her Olympic debut in 9 th position which is an incredible achievement. Bring on LA 2028.

Nominations have now closed for the Queensland Sailing Awards .  While the judges deliberate on our finalists, why n ot book your tickets to the gala event held at Southport Yacht Club on Thursday 26 th September from 6:30 pm.  It’s always a fun night celebrating our sailing community. https://www.sailing.org.au/events/242739

During June, I attended the Sport Integrity roadshow that went through National Integrity Framework and Safeguarding Children and Young People Policy. They have some great resources for you club that include e-learning courses , fact sheets and a handy book that you can use for the Do’s and Don’ts for safe practices. https://www.sportintegrity.gov.au/

Grant has been supporting Queensland events over the past two months .  The Clermont Outback Regatta, the Frostbite regatta, Youth Week and North Sail in Townsville .  He loves being around our sailing community and helping the clubs get the most out of their regatta’s .  T he brand new Townsville Sailing Club ' s youth regatta and coaching clinic in the June/July school holidays was a great event and I hope that all the NQ junior and youth sailors will make sure they put this annual event into their sailing calendar for 2025. Dates are still to be confirmed but we will be sending some excellent coaches for the clinic!

Zhik Youth Sail 2024 is now only 5 weeks away and t hank you to all the Queensland Clubs for your support of this event , and I ' m sure you can ' t wait to see the new Keppel Bay Sailing Club building !  Yes, the bottom floor will be open! As I write this , we have over 100 entries already, and with it being an Olympic year, we might have a few surprises for our participants. Please encourage all your juniors and youth to attend this event regardless of their experience. Can your club consider how it can support the ir families /members in attending? Youth Sail Queensland is THE youth event on the calendar and not to be missed. You can read all about it here: https://www.sailingyouth.org.au/statechamps/queensland

Both the Sailing Summit and Training in Focus Live events were well attended and i f you didn’t have a representative of your club at either event, you missed a great opportunity to network with your community and to learn something new .  Make sure you allocate some budget to attend next year .  All four of our presenters at the Summit told stories of success and the workshop on how to increase female membership created some wonderful conversations . You can see all of the presentations here:  https://www.sailingresources.org.au/2024-summit-archive/

The training in Focus Live event was centered around what good and bad looks like and how each has an im pact on the experiences of a participant.   A big thank you to our Senior Instructors who played the difficult role of being bad instructors !   This twist of thinking from a different perspective caused a bit of chaos at the beginning, but the learnings were well worth it and everyone had a great day .

If you are thinking of making a career change or looking for a way to be part of the sporting industry, t here are two amazing jobs in sailing open at the moment at Keppel Bay Sailing Club and Whitsunday Sailing Club .  Check out the details here: https://www.sailing.org.au/about/careeropportunities

Vale Roger Searl

Tragically Yachting Queensland Board Member and Capricornia Cruising Yacht Club Vice Commodore, Roger Searl passed away in June. Roger was very passionate about sailing, about his position on the Yachting Queensland board, and was always inquisitive about all that Australian Sailing does for our clubs and class associations .  It is a tragic loss for our sailing community and our thoughts are with his family who will still be dealing with the loss of their father and husband .   Our thoughts are also with Capricornia Cruising Yacht Club, their flag officers and members during this tough time. You can read more about Roger here https://www.sailing.org.au/news/vale-roger-searl

Participation Workshops

The Participation workshop is a great opportunity to look at what you are doing well or not so well and make a plan for next season .  It’s a fun interactive workshop and we encourage you to have a good cross section of your membership and management committee in attendance.

This workshop is not just about Discover Sailing Centre programs, we can tailor it to whatever programs you are running at your club .  And yes, that includes WAGS, SAGS, Social activities and coaching programs.

You will not regret having Grant or Alison go through this workshop with you. If your club or class association haven’t done the Participation Workshop with Grant or Alison, make sure you book in a time .

Game Plan

Over the next 12 months the Queensland team will be reaching out to our clubs who have already completed the Participation Workshop , to book in a time to go through Game Plan together in person . You will need all your committee to attend , and the process will take approximately 2-3 hours. Game Plan is self-assessment for clubs and class associations to review all aspects of your organisation and provide an improvement plan with links to resources and templates. It is provided in partnership with the Australian Sports Commission and is a key tool for Government .

Action Item/s for Club:

Register your club for an account with Sport Connect  https://www.sportaus.gov.au/club-development/for-clubs and fill in the basic account information.

If you are interested in the Learn to Wing Program you can find all the information here https://www.sailingresources.org.au/our-programs/wing-program/

Government of Canada investment supports tourism and local businesses

August 21, 2024 · Lunenburg, Nova Scotia · Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

Atlantic Canada’s small towns and rural areas are vibrant places bustling with economic, social and cultural activity. The Government of Canada is investing to help communities in the Lunenburg area thrive, building long-term prosperity.

Improving visitor experiences, and business opportunities  Today, the Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA, announced total contributions of nearly $2.2 million for three community organizations, a municipality and a local food producer in Nova Scotia’s South Shore.

The funding will help the Lunenburg Yacht Club (LYC), the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Society, the Town of Mahone Bay, South Shore Opportunities Incorporated and Terra Beata Farms to host sporting and cultural events, upgrade tourism infrastructure, purchase new automated equipment and deliver programming to support entrepreneurs and growing businesses, thus increasing visitation to the Lunenburg area and setting the stage for growth.

For more information on the companies and projects, please see the related backgrounder.

Today’s announcement further demonstrates the Government of Canada’s commitment to ensuring Atlantic Canadian residents and businesses have what they need to accelerate the region’s economic momentum and build sustainable communities.

“Nova Scotia’s small towns and communities are its magic. Through ACOA, your federal government is investing in the people, places and businesses that make them more attractive to all people. This investment will bring in more visitors, boost small businesses and strengthen communities to make this area an even better place to call home.” -  The Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA
“The Lunenburg Yacht Club’s collaboration with ACOA will ensure barrier-free access to sailing for all abilities and provide the opportunity for more residents of Lunenburg County to experience the treasure that is Mahone Bay for generations to come.” - Erinn McCarty, Commodore, Lunenburg Yacht Club and Chair Mobility Cup, 2024
"This ACOA support will be hugely valuable for the research, design and construction planning needed to restore the 116 year-old Opera House as a vibrant performing arts centre in the heart of Lunenburg's UNESCO district.” -  Tom McFall, Vice-President of Lunenburg Folk Harbour Society and Chair of Lunenburg Opera House Team
“Mahone Bay’s waterfront has graced the cover of numerous tourism publications over the decades. This project, with crucial support from Federal and Provincial governments, continues the Town’s commitment to maintain and improve our waterfront infrastructure, to the benefit of future generations of residents and visitors.” - David Devenne, Mayor, Town of Mahone Bay
“The volunteer driven Board of Directors of the non-profit organization, South Shore Opportunities CBDC, is pleased to work with ACOA to provide free business counselling and technical assistance in Queens and Lunenburg counties.  The ACOA funding allows the CBDC to provide hands on business help at no charge so every small business can be prepared for a start-up, expansion or recovery. Preparation is a key to business success.” - Krista Harding, Executive Director, South Shore Opportunities Incorporated
“The support from ACOA enables Terra Beata Farms Ltd. to acquire automated processing equipment to increase our capacity to efficiently take cranberries, rhubarb, and haskaps from the farm gate and prepare it to meet the exacting standards of domestic and international markets. Farms get access to more of the world markets and employees get better year round jobs, all of which adds to the Atlantic Canadian economy.” - David Ernst, President, Terra Beata Farms Ltd

Quick facts

In the tenth year of its Sail Able program, Lunenburg Yacht Club will host this year's Mobility Cup for the first time. Previously hosted in Nova Scotia by Halifax and North Sydney Clubs, The Mobility Cup is an annual sailing regatta for differently abled sailors, attracting athletes this year from across Canada and the U.S. as far away as California and Hawaii. All participants compete in the Martin 16, a specially modified keel boat designed in Canada for sailors living with disabilities.

The Lunenburg Folk Harbour Society , incorporated in 1986, produces the annual Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival and stages 20 to 25 concerts a year, as well as a film series and other events. Five years ago, it purchased by the Lunenburg Opera House , which was built in 1908 by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF). Over the years it was used for vaudeville, as a cinema, and a recording studio, but has fallen into disrepair and is in need of upgrades and modernization.

Mahone Bay is a small coastal community about a one-hour drive from Halifax. It offers a rich mix of heritage, culture and natural beauty and is famed for three churches casting their reflection on the water. The Town comprises 3.12 square kilometers and has a population of 1,016 residents (2021 Census).

South Shore Opportunities Incorporated is one of 41 Community Business Development Corporations (CBDCs) delivering the national Community Futures (CF) program in rural Atlantic Canada. Each CBDC plays an important role in strengthening the ability of rural communities to diversify their economic base to foster long-term prosperity and sustainability.

Founded in 1998 by David and Evelyn Ernst, Terra Beata has a 12-acre cranberry farm on Heckmans Island which produces juice, dried fruit and cooked products sold at grocery stores across Canada. It also has a 50-acre farm in Aylesford, and a 12 acre farm in Tremont, NS.

In 2018, Terra Beata opened a facility in Sackville, NB to receive, clean and freeze fresh cranberries from its farms plus about 15 other farms in Atlantic Canada, for a total of over 5 million pounds of fruit per year. Frozen berries packed in Sackville travel to industrial customers around the world.

The funding announced today is provided through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund , Community Futures program and Regional Economic Growth through Innovation program.
