Cruising from Southampton with MSC Cruises (2022 Guide)

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Front

MSC Cruises’ growth in Southampton has been somewhat meteoric over the last few years.

From just offering a few summer cruises back in 2017-8, to now offering all-year-round voyages from their own new cruise terminal, there is something on offer for every cruiser on a variety of different MSC ships.

IMPORTANT: Please stick to your embarkation times – this helps the flow of passengers through the terminal and onto the ship. Ignoring embarkation times leads to large queues and increased wait times.

Introduction to MSC Cruises UK

MSC Cruises operates from the Port of Southampton for its voyages. During the ‘Return to Cruising’ in 2021, MSC offered multiple embarkation ports additional to Southampton – these included Liverpool and Greenock (Glasgow).

In 2022 MSC Cruises will again offer a packed cruise programme with their flagship, MSC Virtuosa .

All cruises will depart from Southampton and whilst open to other nationalities this time around, embarkation will only be at the Port of Southampton and specifically, at their brand new cruise terminal – the Horizon Cruise Terminal .

In this guide, we will cover how the cruise terminal works and the embarkation and disembarkation procedures for sailing with MSC Cruises from Southampton.

Horizon Terminal Southampton

Located at Dock Gate 10, Southern Road is the new Horizon Cruise Terminal – a joint partnership between MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line.

This is the main terminal for MSC Cruise departures – it is signposted as ‘Dock Gate 10’ or ‘Horizon Cruise Terminal’ on West Quay Road, Southampton. The postcode for your sat nav is SO15 1HG.

Horizon Cruise Terminal offers short stay and long stay parking. Drop-off facilities by car or taxi are also available at the port.

The short stay and long stay car park are both signposted and port staff are on hand to guide you to the correct car park or drop-off. You must book long-stay parking before arrival.

Taxis are available from just outside the front of the cruise terminal.

MSC Cruises Parking in Southampton

Horizon Cruise Terminal Car Parking

  • You take your keys with you after parking
  • The car park is locked after all passengers have arrived and the ship has set sail – it is monitored by CCTV and the port

MSC Cruises Embarkation in Southampton

Horizon Cruise Terminal Drop off - MSC Cruises Southampton

After arriving at Horizon Cruise Terminal (whether by car, taxi or other means) you will need to drop off your luggage – this is usually just your case(s) that you would usually check-in if you were flying. Hand luggage and suit carriers can be taken inside the terminal (or anything else, as long as you can carry it through the terminal, security and onboard the ship without help).

Baggage drop-off

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Baggage drop off

Make sure you print out the luggage labels that are on the PDF that MSC Cruises sends you when you have ‘checked in’ online (your travel agent may send them if you didn’t book direct) – you can print out as many labels as you wish. Just attach them to your case before you hand them over to baggage drop-off. If you lose a label, forget one or need an extra one – just ask – you can get one at the baggage drop-off area.

Make sure your check-in luggage doesn’t weigh more than 23KG per case/bag – this is for the health and safety of the baggage handlers and the crew on board who will deliver your luggage to outside your cabin door for you.

Note: Do not put your passport in your check-in luggage – you need it next!

Initial Check-in

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Entrance

( Important: Since April 2022 the rules have changed regarding face masks in the terminal – they are not mandatory anymore)

At check-in, you’ll be asked to show your passport, cruise ticket, MSC health form (which is in your cruise ticket), Covid-19 test result and vaccination/proof of recovery certificates (if applicable).

You can show digital insurance/vaccination proof if needed on your phone – however, some people have said that reception in the terminal isn’t great – so feel to print out them beforehand, or save screenshots on your phone (make sure they are clear!)

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Security area

Cruise ship security is much like airport security – apart from there is no limit on liquids (ie toiletries, etc) – MSC’s policy is not to bring drinks or food onboar d, but of course, you can bring some snacks/drinks for yourself or your children whilst you are boarding without issue.

Everything will go through the x-ray machine and you will walk through an x-ray scanner – belts, watches, etc will be placed in a tray via the machine.

Covid-19 Testing (no longer conducted at the port)

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Waiting Area

Important: Since late April 2022 – Covid-19 testing at the port is no longer conducted. However, you must still have a valid negative Covid-19 test that was taken within 48-hours of your embarkation time.

After security, you head up the escalator to the waiting area. A brief check of your paperwork follows (cruise ticket).

You will be assigned a group number (sticker or piece of paper) which you will need after the final check-in – this will be your waiting area number.

Final Check-in

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Check-in

After arriving in this area, you go to the long check-in desk at the rear of the cruise terminal. Here, a customer relations agent will take your cruise ticket and passport from you briefly, only to check. They may also ask to see your insurance details and take a copy of your vaccination history too.

They will ask to take a photo of you – this photo will be uploaded to the ship and used to confirm your purchases in shops on board and allow you entry to/from the ship.

You will then be handed your cruise card – this states which deck and cabin you are located on and also your dining time. Additionally, it will also be a different colour card based on the MSC Voyager Club status you have. Initial first-time passengers are blue cards.

Sometimes, you are given the option to register a credit or debit card here – but you can actually do this on board and have 48 hours from embarkation to do this at one of the many automated machines around the ship (more details about those in your cabin).

You then sit at the numbered waiting area until your group is announced to board the ship.

There are free refreshments (bottles of water) handed out by the MSC crew if you wish and also toilets available.

Boarding the ship

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Boarding the ship

When your group is called you head to the doors at the rear of the waiting area which is signposted – your cruise card will be checked and you follow the signs to the ship. The walk can be quite lengthy as the gangway is a series of ramps to allow wheelchair/mobility access. However, there is no rush and you can enjoy views of your ship as you walk along them.

As you approach the ship you’ll cross one final gangway onto the ship and you will need only your cruise card from here. A member of the ship’s security team will ask for your card which they will scan and they will check your photo (just taken) matches you – you are then free to enter the ship.

On arrival, you will find a number of MSC crew waiting to greet you – they can help direct you to lifts and/or your cabin if you need help. Generally, cabins are not ready until around 12:30-1pm PM on the day of embarkation.

You are free to use any of the bars, restaurants or other facilities on the ship from the moment you board!

Horizon Cruise Terminal (rear)

MSC Cruises Back to Back sailings from Southampton

If you are booked on a back to back cruise on the same ship with MSC Cruises you will need to visit the Guest Relations desk during your first cruise and confirm the procedure with them.

Generally, you will be required on the day of your second cruise to visit Guest Relations and settle your bill for your first cruise and they will re-check you in without you needing to leave the ship (this is only applicable in Southampton – other ports, such as Miami may differ) – this is usually done between 9-10am.

They will take a copy of your passport and vaccination record again and issue you a new cruise card for the second cruise duration (and take a new photo of you).

You will then need to visit the Medical Centre for a free Covid-19 LFT test which they will do for you – Guest Relations will phone ahead and confirm it is free and the result will be told to you and uploaded to the system so that the ship knows you are Covid-19 clear.

Other than that, everything else continues as normal – one thing to note is if you have an existing internet package is that it does not run out until midnight on your last day (your first day on your next cruise) – so you will need to use the same login information until midnight.

If you are parking at the Horizon Cruise Terminal for a Back to Back cruise – let them know when you arrive, you will be directed to park in a slightly different area (of the same car park) so that your car isn’t left in the way when everyone leaves from the first cruise!

MSC Cruises Disembarkation in Southampton

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Luggage collection

Disembarkation is very easy with the Horizon Cruise Terminal.

As standard practice on all cruises, the luggage that you do not wish to carry off will be collected from outside your cabin by around 1am on the last night of your voyage. You will be given labels to put on your luggage on the final day and you can visit Guest Relations if you need any more.

Depending on your MSC Voyager status or your MSC Cruise Experience (Bella, Fantastica, etc) you will be assigned a disembarkation time and a place to meet for this.

Simply follow the instructions on the letter in your cabin and make sure that your cruise balance is ZERO . If you are even in credit by 0.50 GBP/0.50 EUR you will be denied leaving the ship until you collect the balance from Guest Relations! Visit there before you leave the ship!

Seashore Embarkation for Yacht Club

By DeRon , December 10, 2021 in MSC Cruises

I’ve read horror stories about the Seashores embarkation.  Do they still meet yacht club guests separately, take them to the lounge, etc. for emabarkation, or is it different during for Covid reasons?

Yacht Club line privileges are in place at both Port Miami and Port Canaveral.  Go to the white tent.  At Port Canaveral the tent is directly at the bottom of the escalator into the terminal.  At both ports expect to be escorted from the tent through the terminal by pier agents, then to the Topsail lounge by butlers.  Remember to drop your bags at the YC tent so they can be priority routed.  The porters do have the Gold luggage tags to retag your bags.

Thanks

Southern latitudes

At Port Canaveral, are they enforcing boarding times for Yacht Club?  We currently have a boarding time of 3 pm. which seems awfully late.  I am hopeful this will change when we get our E tickets at 20 days out (next week), but if it doesn't change, do we have to wait until 2 pm, which would be the earliest time within the hour window.

In Miami the terminal Seashore is using (Terminal F) is under construction.  It is a mess.  Look for the white tent in front of the terminal.  You may have to push your way through the throngs of passengers waiting for the regular check-in (the line goes on and on and on).  And also fight the porters wanting to take your bags early.  At the tent they will retag your bags for priority, check your name off the list, then you will be escorted into the terminal building past the masses who arrived early for their check-in where you will finish the cruise paperwork and be given your keys.  Then a butler will lead you straight onboard up to Yacht Club.

I am on now, and taking next sailing in YC.

It was a mess with the terminal construction last week.

Not the usual greatness.

They took us in small groups and made us wait outside in the sun.

Once I side it was extra hassle due to vac requirements.

Part of issue is construction.

Last 7 days.

2000 passengers total. We had only 130 in Yacht club.

This coming week is supposed to be very light as well.

Spent almost all time in YC. It's very nice.

That’s perfect. Enough to make it feel lively but not crowded everywhere! Enjoy!

Cruise Embarkation

Your check-in process begins at the check-in time shown on your cruise ticket . A dedicated check-in slot is assigned to you by default by MSC Cruises, but it could be changed during the web check-in , choosing from those available.

Please note, if you arrive before your dedicated check-in slot opens you may be requested to wait outside of the terminal building. In the event you arrive after your dedicated check-in slot closes you may be denied embarkation. Check-in and boarding close 2 hours before the ship’s departure .

The ship’s departure and arrival times shown on your ticket or in the MSC for ME app are estimated and might differ from those indicated, which is why it is essential you adhere to your check-in slot.

Before arriving at the port, please ensure that all personal details shown on the embarkation form in your e-ticket are checked and correct. You will be required to show your embarkation form (on paper or digital version) or your personal QR code before boarding.

Don’t forget/leave your and your companions IDs and Visa (if required) in the hold luggage. Showing ID and Visa (if required) at the check in is mandatory.

We recommend to complete the MSC Web check-in  or via the MSC for Me app  (if available) to receive your digital boarding pass ( QR code) for a smoother embarkation.

MSC Yacht Club : As an MSC Yacht Club guest, we welcome you with a bespoke check-in experience . As part of your exclusive privileges, you have the flexibility to check in at your convenience, aligned with the ship’s operational schedule and at least 2 hours prior to the ship’s departure. You will also be personally escorted by a butler to the Top Sail Lounge, where you will be greeted by the Concierge and start a relaxing holiday.

At the terminal

1. Deliver your luggage to the designated staff, who will then have it sent directly to your cabin. All bags must be labelled beforehand with your name and surname, the name of the ship, the cabin number and the date and port of departure.

Luggage will be delivered directly to the cabin. The expected delivery timeframe is from late afternoon through early evening. We recommend keeping any items needed for embarkation day and evening in your carry-on bag including clothes for the evening and any medications. 2. Proceed to check-in area with all personal travel documents required for the cruise, show staff the embarkation form or your personal QR code either on your cruise ticket or via the MSC for Me app. Staff will check your personal documents and they will take your security picture, if you have not already done so via the MSC for Me app  or through the web check-in  (if available).

MSC Yacht Club: Upon arrival, as an MSC Yacht Club guest, you shall proceed to the MSC Yacht Club luggage drop off area (where available) identified with the MSC Yacht Club branded gazebo. While your luggage is processed, refreshments and snacks are available for you to enjoy in the designated MSC Yacht Club lounge . Following swift check-in procedures, our attentive butler team will ensure your seamless passage through security to the ship, where you will be escorted directly to the Top Sail Lounge. Your embarkation check-in time can be found on your cruise ticket. However, as an MSC Yacht Club guest, you have the flexibility to check in at your convenience, aligned with the ship’s operational schedule and at least 2 hours prior to the ship’s departure . Please note, actual ship timings may vary from the itinerary due to operational requirements such as adverse weather or local authorities' stipulations. 3. Proceed to the security control. Please note that staff may search you and/or your luggage and confiscate any articles that could represent a safety risk.

4. Board the ship where staff will scan your embarkation form or your personal QR code and then proceed to your cabin..

5. Go to your cabin. You will find your Cruise card hanging on your door - it will serve as your cabin key, can also be used to pay for products and services on board.

MSC Yacht Club: As an MSC Yacht Club guest, you are personally escorted on board to the Top Sail Lounge. Here, our Concierge greets you and provides a brief introduction and personalized recommendations to enhance their cruise experience. While awaiting your suite, you can begin enjoying the exclusive private venues : sipping cocktails in the Top Sail Lounge or at the MSC Yacht Club Grill & Bar outside, savoring your first gourmet lunch at the MSC Yacht Club restaurant, or relaxing by the One Pool, taking a refreshing dip, or sunbathing on one of our numerous sunbeds.

6. Activate your Cruise Card for onboard purchases. (See the Onboard Payment  section below for further information on how to do this.)

7. Take part in the obligatory safety drill.

Boarding time question

By mvh , April 27, 2023 in MSC Cruises

I don't sail for a while and it's been a few years (pre Covid) since I have sailed MSC. Do they send me a specific boarding time or do I request it at a certain point? If so, how strict are they about being there before your scheduled time? We will need to check out of the hotel by 11:00 and would like to head over by then. Also, do they give us the same time as our linked cabins?

MSC will assign you a time to check-in but that doesn't mean that you will board at that time. Honestly, I don't believe that anyone at the port enforced the assigned time.

You can check out of your hotel then head directly to the port.

Thanks, that's kinda what I thought. Pretty much just a suggestion.

I have an upcoming cruise on Seascape from PortMiami.  This is my first cruise with MSC.  Therefore, I'm not familiar with their boarding practices.  I noticed that my cruise documents state that check-in time is 15:00.  I've never received a boarding time so late before.  Will I have to wait to board the ship until 3:00 PM?  I was planning to arrive at the port by 10:00 AM or so and board shortly thereafter as I've done on all of my previous cruises with other lines.  Will this be possible on MSC?

You can arrive and check-in as early as you have planned but you probably won't board until after 11am. You will board way before 3pm if you arrive early. It is unlikely that anyone will pay attention to your assigned time.

People with priority boarding (Yacht Club, B2B, Voyagers Club Diamond, etc.) will board early then once general boarding begins, those who have checked-in earlier will board before those who have checked-in later.

Thanks for your reply Two Wheels Only!  Check-in as you describe above will certainly work for us!  Hey, since you're also in FL, perhaps you can answer another question I have regarding the Embarkation Form.  Although I typed and saved our complete address on the MSC website, I noticed that our state (FL) is not included on the Embarkation Form?  Is that normal?  Everything else (street address, city, zip code, etc) is listed on the form.  Thanks again for your feedback!

Mine are the same. It has never been a problem.

We're hoping to do the same, we are supposed to arrive at 13:00 but we check out at 11:00. Do you think they'll let us get on?

Just imagine your Dr's office opens at 8 AM and EVERYONE from the entire daya appointments  shows up at 8 AM-it's chaos... Same holds true here-they just didn't schedule a certain time for giggles....

Yes other people show up early-some are denied and told to go outside and wait, others are permitted to go up to the holding room and wait for your group number to be called... If you have to show up early try around 1 pm when most of the crowd that truly were scheduled at the earlier boarding time has processed....

You will board with Diamond members after Special Assistance guests. There should be a dedicated Aurea/Diamond checkin line as well. Ask, once you get through security.

I’ve never personally seen parties broken up. I trust this will not start another series of posts about abusing ‘privileges.’  You shouldn’t have a problem, particularly if you check in as a group. Depending on the terminal setup the Special Assistance checkin may be located away from the Aurea/Diamond checkin.

I have been on four MSC cruises post-covid and they beginning the assignment of boarding times. No one has ever asked to see my boarding time. You just get there when you get there and get in the queue.

Have they filled out the special needs at sea form? If not, please do that for them as it asks about wheelchair assistance and mention you need to help them settle....

IMAGINE you go to the Drs office and all of the patients scheduled throughout the day show up and demand they be seen now-its pure chaos.... MSC  didn't schedule you without reason-there is a reason for their madness and I hop they start enforcing embarkation times.... The line queues would not be so bad if everyone just showed up at the scheduled EMBARKATION TIMES!!!!

Sorry but that's not even close to the same thing. If my long ago booked flight arrives into Miami at 10AM and I get to the port at 11:30AM, I'm checking-in even if MSC randomly assigned me 2PM. I'm not standing around waiting, especially when no one is asking for my assigned time. Also, I've had situations where MSC had to email docs to me three times and I had three different assigned times! This question comes up numerous times and my answer is always the same: get there when you get there and ignore the assigned time because NO ONE IS LOOKING AT IT AND NO ONE CARES.

Agreed. I would be fine if they let you pick your boarding time when you book, which it sounds like they pick it for you. It's ridiculous to think people are not going to want to board as early as possible and take advantage of the first day. Cruise lines have been loading 5,000 passengers without times for years. There is more than one Doctor at this office.

Haha

Brighton Line

Advertised 3p Sail, 1:30p auto assigned time to check in, and then in the same document you are expected to be on board two hours before sailing. So I am supposed to arrive 30 minutes after I'm supposed to be checked in so reading their rules I won't be allowed to check in arriving at their assigned time which is past the 2 hour before sail time?

No wonder people go early.

FYI this is a computer glitch. Called MSC and they said that. You can't arrive at 1:30 and expect to get checked in and board for a 3pm departure. It is not allowed. All passengers must be onboard by 2pm. That is why people just go and show up. We have the 1:30 arrival also and will get there way before that time for sure!

A dedicated check-in slot is assigned to you by default by MSC Cruises, but it could be changed during the web check-in, choosing from those available. Showing ID and Visa (if require) at the check in is mandatory.

At the terminal

1. Deliver your luggage to the designated staff, who will then have it sent directly to your cabin. All bags must be labelled with the luggage tag you will find in the cruise ticket beforehand with your name and surname, the name of the ship, the cabin number and the date and port of departure. Luggage will be delivered directly to the cabin. The expected delivery timeframe is from late afternoon through the evening. We recommend that you bring any items you will need on embarkation day and evening in your carry-on bag, such as a change of clothes, swimwear and any medications.

While your luggage is processed, refreshments and snacks are available for you to enjoy in the designated MSC Yacht Club lounge. Following swift check-in procedures, our attentive butler team will ensure your seamless passage through security to the ship, where you will be escorted directly to the Top Sail Lounge. Your embarkation check-in time can be found on your cruise ticket. However, as an MSC Yacht Club guest, you have the flexibility to check in at your convenience, aligned with the ship’s operational schedule and at least 2 hours prior to the ship’s departure. Please note, actual ship timings may vary from the itinerary due to operational requirements such as adverse weather or local authorities' stipulations. 3. Proceed to the security control. Please note that staff may search you and/or your luggage and confiscate any articles that could represent a safety risk. 4. Board the ship where staff will scan your embarkation form or your personal QR code and then proceed to your cabin.

While awaiting your suite, you can begin enjoying the exclusive private venues: sipping cocktails in the Top Sail Lounge or at the MSC Yacht Club Grill & Bar outside, savoring your first gourmet lunch at the MSC Yacht Club restaurant, or relaxing by the One Pool, taking a refreshing dip, or sunbathing on one of our numerous sunbeds.

6. Activate your Cruise Card for onboard purchases. (See the Onboard Payment  section below for further information on how to do this.)

7. Take part in the obligatory safety drill.
