COMMUNITIES; Paradise Redefined At a Poor Man's Yacht Club

STEPHEN GRZESZCZAK, a retired airline pilot from Bayonne, spends most of his days not far from home, drinking beer here in a leaky one-room shack that he named the Oar House. On the door to his nonfunctioning bathroom he has posted a fake boat registration number that reads ''NJ 4U2P'' and, for him, is a source of glee.

His shack and more than 50 others, almost invisible from sea or land, sit between a field of dingy white petroleum tanks and a chemical refinery. The shacks are jammed together and spill out over the carcass of a long-abandoned coal dock into the Kill Van Kull, the slip of water that separates New Jersey from Staten Island. Some boats are moored at the dock. The Bayonne Bridge rises in the distance.

This is the Atlas Yacht Club, but that is a term of irony. There are no yachts here, just pleasure boats and modest fishing vessels. And in place of wealthy yachtsmen are a cast of factory laborers, plumbers, retired phone company workers and old longshoremen who come to their hideaways here to linger, drink and fish.

Indeed, if yacht clubs are the domain of blue bloods, then Atlas is a haven for the blue collar. ''It's a poor man's yacht club,'' Mr. Grzeszczak (pronounced GRESH-eck) said. ''It serves its purpose.''

The Atlas Yacht Club is one of the last of a dying breed -- barely organized groups that started out as squatters on abandoned piers or rail property in Bayonne and Jersey City and eventually began paying rent for the use of the land. Many such clubs died out as developers came in with condominiums and other projects. Indeed, in Bayonne a golf course is being built on a long-ago squatter club. In 1984, the state ordered a group of squatter shacks in Jersey City called the Greene Street Boat Club demolished.

The property that Atlas occupies is assessed at $4.2 million, according to city tax records. Yet Atlas certainly looks poor, like a waterfront slum, with many of the shacks sided with only tar paper and in various stages of tired decline. Ancient wooden ships like the 19th-century Occidental lie half-sunk in waters just beyond the club. A nearby refinery wheezes and spits. A faint smell of gas usually hangs in the air. Hulking container ships slide by. Seagulls cry and an egret picks its way through the muck on the pilings of a rotted pier.

Mr. Grzeszczak, 62, who looks a little like Uncle Junior from ''The Sopranos,'' summed up the ambiguity of his setting succinctly. ''It's nice,'' he said, ''but it's not nice.''

''Nice'' was hardly a word for the place in earlier years, when packs of wild dogs roamed the shoreline and street toughs would set fire to the abandoned boats in the water. But that has not kept the members here from being highly protective of what they have: most are wary of publicity, lest outsiders learn about the place.

Stephen Cylek, 44, a blacksmith from Bayonne who is now a member of Atlas, says that recently he had to leave the Elco, a boat club in Bayonne where he was commodore, and the site where John F. Kennedy's PT-109 was built. Elco was razed, and residents have begun moving into new town houses on the site.

Mr. Cylek's father had a shack just south of the former Military Ocean Terminal, not far from a perpetual burning pile of trash, and in the 1960's the family would often take junk down to burn. ''He'd bring the TV down there and throw it in the fire,'' Mr. Cylek recalled. Then they would salvage the copper and titanium for beer money.

The tenuous nature of the Atlas club's existence is a constant source of concern for the members. Though the city of Bayonne owns the land, the club pays rent on it as well as taxes of $16,000 a year.

''We're always in danger,'' said Joseph Pica, a former longshoreman who at 91 is the oldest member of the club and has been around the longest, since 1938. ''We do not have a long-term lease. We have a monthly lease. They could end it in a month, and say, 'Get out.'''

Still, city officials say they have no such intentions. ''I'm not aware of any plans to do anything new with that property,'' said Joe Ryan, a spokesman for the city.

Many members simply couldn't afford the prices of a more affluent yacht club. At Atlas, $3,500 buys an initial membership, and fees, based on boat size, run to $650 a year for access to a shack like Mr. Grzeszczak's and a slip for his 24-foot boat. The wait list is long, and many fathers pass membership down to their sons.

Just to the east of the club lie hulks of abandoned wooden vessels that still contain coal. Club members must navigate their boats through the sliver of water that cuts between the wreckage and the rocky shoreline like a post-industrial Scylla and Charybdis. The coal boats, towed decades ago and left to die, have been hacked apart and burned.

It was here in 1941 that the artist John A. Noble constructed a floating houseboat on a barge and, through the early 1980's, painted scenes of the vessels in all their rotting glory. Members of the Atlas club recall the heavy-drinking artist sharing a beer at the shacks and bumming cigarettes. His work and former barge lie just across the Kill Van Kull, on Staten Island in the Noble Maritime Collection.

A good deal of alcohol is consumed at the shacks. ''Instead of hanging out in bars, I hang out here,'' Mr. Grzeszczak said. ''It's cheaper.''

On one of those beer-soaked nights, Adam Czuba, 63, a box factory worker who is a member of the club, told of a fateful voyage with Mr. Grzeszczak.

''One night, we took a ride on the boat,'' he said. ''We had enough gas for a five-mile ride. We went on a 10-mile ride.'' When they finally ran out of gas, they were stuck in the water north of the Military Ocean Terminal. ''We paddled like hell,'' said Mr. Czuba, who had to persuade a startled guard to take him to a local gas station. The ordeal lasted three hours.

Of late, Mr. Grzeszczak's Oar House has suffered many blows to its 50-year-old engineering. Over the winter, the entire patio collapsed after a storm and a mysterious flood ruined the floor. A brood of buckets cluster under an unexamined roof leak. The sink no longer produces water in the aftermath of a ruptured pipe, and Mr. Grzeszczak uses a garden hose instead. Appraising all this, and his lack of interest in repairs, Mr. Grzeszczak concluded: ''I'm getting lazy in my old age.'' In September, he plans to swap houses with a younger member.

Not once this year has he gone out on his motorboat. He forgot to put antifreeze in it over the winter and it now sits tied to the slip, full of empty beer cans. He has stopped fishing, because it ''just got boring -- if you like fish, go to the fish market.''

Members hold out hope that the Atlas will survive. Mr. Pica, the former longshoreman, first built his shack here in 1938. ''We've been here so long,'' he said. ''Hopefully, after I'm gone, they'll still be here.''

What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Some of them have made it to the list of Top 15 golf clubs in the world, a source of great prestige for the country.

The first 18-hole golf course built in Russia, Moscow Country Club, hosts the exclusive PGA European Tour. Located just eight miles from the city center, this luxurious facility was created by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr . The design takes advantage of a typical Russian birch and spruce forest to provide a natural environment of extraordinary beauty.

The Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is 18 miles from the heart of Moscow, close to historical monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed by famed architects Paul and Dave Thomas , this 18-hole course is part of a complex that includes a yacht club, an equestrian center, and a health and wellness facility. Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is Russia’s version of a classic country club with multiple attractions.

Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club

This park is among the best in Eastern Europe and was awarded the 2014 World Golf Award as the best golf course in Russia. Located 25 miles from Moscow, it is part of a vast complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus , a polo club and a mountain ski club with four tracks. The design combines classic Scottish, Alpine, and English features in a dreamy landscape.

Less than 60 miles from Moscow, this golf course with a definite Scottish design is the only one in Russia recognized as a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) from Britain and Ireland. Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. “Breakfast & Lunch among friends”

The Breakfast Club has been a locally-owned Moscow breakfast staple for 12 years. The food is delicious, and the portions are appropriate (not gigantic). They have stuffed biscuits and gravy which is biscuits cut in half with eggs and bacon in the middle, covered in in-house made sausage gravy. If you are ever in Moscow in the wee hours of the morning, this is the place to stop!!!
