Full Details

Built-in boarding steps on port and starboard sides make entering the large cockpit easy. Two steps lead up to port side hinged door salon entrance. A large L-shaped leather couch is on the starboard side, opposite cabinetry with entertainment system on port side. The dinette is forward on port side and across from the galley. Port side companionway is between the dinette and salon and five steps lead down to the belowdecks accommodations. Master stateroom is amidships on starboard side with a large head and shower forward. VIP guest stateroom is in the forepeak. To port is the guest head and shower and crew quarters (or second guest cabin) on port aft side.

The salon is entered from the cockpit on the port side. Directly on the port side is the breaker panel set in cabinet undercounter. Flatscreen TV stands on cabinet countertop with entertainment electronics in cabinet below. Cabinetry has additional drawer and cabinet storage. Forward on port side is the dinette with seating for four and storage underneath the leather settee. Table is mounted on double adjustable pedestals. On salon starboard aft side is a large L-shaped leather couch with built-in end table. White Formica walls and cabinetry are trimmed with satin-finished teak in the salon and throughout the interior for an elegant touch. Sole is cherrywood with black accent grooves. There are two AC/Heat units in the salon.

The U-shaped galley is forward on starboard side and features a large sink, electric stove, microwave, two Subzero refrigerator units under peninsula countertop, and an abundance of drawer and cabinet storage. The cabinets and drawers are white Formica with beautiful satin-finished teak trim. Galley sole is cherrywood with black accent grooves.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The master cabin is on the starboard side from companionway stairs. Master features over/under bunks with a bottom double bunk, top single bunk, and plenty of storage in drawers and closets. The walls are white Formica with satin-finished teak trim. Sole is cherry with black accent grooves. Master has a standalone AC/ Heat unit.

The VIP cabin is in the forepeak and features a large V-berth. There are several drawers for storage. The walls and drawers are white Formica with satin-finished teak trim. VIP cabin has its own AC/Heat unit.

Crew/Guest cabin is on the port side down from companionway stairs and features over/under bunks and ample drawers for storage. Walls and drawers are white Formica with satin-finished teak trim. The floor is cherry with black accent grooves. Climate controlled with stand-alone AC/Heat unit.

Missing tech tycoon mike lynch’s co-defendant in $11b fraud trial fatally struck by car just days before billionaire’s yacht tragedy.

Missing UK tech billionaire Mike Lynch’s associate Stephen Chamberlain, who stood trial for fraud alongside him after the sale of software company Autonomy, died just days before the entrepreneur vanished in a shipwreck off the coast of Sicily.

Chamberlain was out for a run in Cambridgeshire, England, on Saturday when he was struck by a vehicle and died after being rushed to a nearby hospital.

Chamberlain and Lynch, who remains missing after a yacht he was on with his wife and 18-year-old daughter sank Monday, were co-defendants in the decade-long fraud case that arose after the $11 billion sale to Hewlett-Packard.

Both men were acquitted last June.

Lynch’s wife, Angela Baceres, was rescued soon after the vessel went down after a major storm, but the British tech magnate — sometimes referred to as “the Bill Gates of the UK” — and his daughter, Hannah, are among six missing passengers who have yet to be found. The missing include four British nationals and two Americans.

What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily, leaving one dead and six missing:

• A superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily after a tornado hit the area early Monday, killing one passenger and leaving five others missing — including Michael Lynch, a tech tycoon known as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” officials said.
• Lynch had invited guests from the legal firm that represented him, Clifford Chance, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage,  according to the Telegraph . 
• Captain James Catfield, who piloted the 184-foot, British-flagged craft, was among the 15 crew members and passengers to survive after the tornado struck Monday before sunrise.
• Security camera footage shot from 650 feet from where the  Bayesian sank Monday  shows it slowly disappearing.
• Italian authorities have said the chances of the passengers surviving the disaster was very small, but “never say never.”

In a statement, Chamberlain’s family described him as, “an amazing individual whose only goal in life was to help others in any way possible.”

His lawyer, Gary Licenberg, who defended him in the long-running San Francisco fraud case, called his client a “courageous man” who “fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year.”

Chamberlain, 52, had been the vice president of finance at Autonomy, the sale of which prompted HP to sue Lynch and his colleagues, claiming they overstated the value of the company by billions.

HP wound up taking an $8.8 billion writedown a year after the purchase, later blaming “accounting irregularities” for overpaying for the purchase.

Bayesian: "Very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" says captain of sistership

The captain of the sistership to the sunken 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian has said it is "very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" and called the 56-metre Perini Navi series "bulletproof".

David Hutchinson, captain of Rosehearty , said he had taken the yacht around the world multiple times and he had "total faith in the boat".  "We've been to Antarctica and Chile, and we've had her in 70 knots of wind," he recounts, and the vessel had never put them in a situation that felt unmanageable.

However, Hutchinson noted there were differences between Bayesian and Rosehearty ; notably, Bayesian's  74-metre mast, which would have been heavier and added increased windage. The yacht's layout was also different, with guest accommodation on Bayesian located further forward.

Who's currently missing in the Bayesian disaster?

The yacht's sinking in Italy has resulted in one confirmed death, which is understood to be the chef, and six additional people missing.

The six missing individuals are:

• British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, once dubbed 'Britain's Bill Gates'
• Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah
•  Morgan Stanley's chairman, Jonathan Bloomer
• Judy Bloomer, wife of Morgan Stanley chairman
• Chris Morvillo, a lawyer working for London-based law firm Clifford Chance
• Neda Morvillo, an American jewellery designer and Chris' wife

It is understood that the yacht was being used to celebrate Lynch's recent victory in a 13-year £8 billion fraud acquittal.

Live updates

• A search and rescue is currently underway for six people missing in the waters off Palermo on the Italian island of Sicily.
• Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur who co-founded Autonomy Corporation and founded Invoke Capital, is among the missing.
• Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and a one-year-old are among the fifteen people rescued along with Bayesian' s captain, James Catfield.
• The BBC has reported that the Palermo Coastguard has confirmed the body that has been recovered is that of the yacht's chef.
• Another sailing vessel in the area, the 42-metre Sir Robert Baden Powell ,  is understood to have stepped in to offer assistance in the initial rescue.
• Divers have been able to reach Bayesian' s sunken hull, which lies at 45 metres of depth about half a mile from the coast. The yacht had the largest aluminium masts of any sailing yacht on the water.
• Eyewitnesses in the area reported "hurricane" conditions off the coast but local weather websites did not indicate any severe squall, which suggests that the weather event was not forecast.
• At around 5am local time on 19 August, Bayesian was hit by bad weather and sunk.  The sailing yacht was anchored or idle at the time of the incident.

Built in Italy by renowned builder Perini Navi and delivered in 2008, the yacht's naval architecture was developed by Ron Holland Design while the interior design is by Rémi Tessier . She was formerly known as Salute and was last refitted in 2016. She was listed for sale earlier this year, according to BOATPro . The yacht had accommodation for nine guests and 12 crew.

Mike Lynch, a British tech entrepreneur who once ranked on the Forbes billionaire list and founded software company Autonomy that over the past decade has been mired in legal problems, is reportedly missing alongside five others after a yacht sank off the coast of Sicily Monday morning.

Lynch founded Autonomy, a company that developed software that could analyze large batches of data, in 1996 with David Tabizel and Richard Gaunt, a company that grew to serve clients including the U.K. and U.S. governments, Shell and BMW.

Autonomy sold to HP in 2011 for $11 billion—but HP announced an $8.8 billion writedown the following year after discovering “serious accounting improprieties” that artificially inflated the value of Autonomy, leading to civil and criminal charges filed against Lynch, who has consistently denied wrongdoing.

The U.K.’s Serious Fraud Office launched an investigation into HP’s allegations in 2013, but closed the investigation in 2015 after finding insufficient evidence.

Lynch was cleared on 15 charges by a San Francisco jury in June 2024, including one count of conspiracy and 14 counts of wire fraud, concluding a three-month trial in which Lynch, who had been extradited to the United States, argued he did not inflate Autonomy’s value.

HP won a fraud case against Lynch in the U.K. in 2022 after a judge found that HP had “substantially” argued Autonomy had artificially inflated its value, with the company set to receive damages, though the payment is expected to be less than the $5 billion claimed by HP.

At the height of his tech career, British media referred to Lynch as “Britain’s Bill Gates.”

A luxury yacht carrying 22 people sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday morning. Fifteen people were rescued from the ship, while one was found dead and six more remain missing—including both Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, multiple news outlets reported . Two Americans are among those missing, according to multiple reports . Eight of those rescued from the vessel are receiving treatment at a nearby hospital. The yacht sank after being hit by a tornado , according to the Italian coast guard.

Key Background

Lynch, an Irish-born entrepreneur raised in England, founded Autonomy using technology he had developed while a student at Cambridge University. Autonomy grew out of Cambridge Neurodynamics , a fingerprint recognition business Lynch had founded in 1991. Before Lynch became the CEO of Autonomy, he completed a Ph.D. in signal processing and connectionist models at Cambridge. Lynch’s doctoral thesis is reportedly one of the most widely read research works in Cambridge’s library. Lynch garnered a reputation as an uncompromising boss—which prosecutors used as an argument against him in his U.S. trial, with witnesses describing a piranha tank in the Autonomy office and office rooms named after James Bond villains, a film franchise Lynch was known to be a fan of. Lynch was given an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), a civilian honor for making significant contributions in a field of work, in 2006. In 2011, he was elected to former U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron’s council for science and technology.

Outside of Autonomy, Lynch is the founder of venture capital firm Invoke Capital, which he launched after the sale of Autonomy. With Invoke, Lynch invested the cybersecurity company Darktrace and the legal software startup Luminance.

Surprising Fact

Lynch made the Forbes billionaires list in 2014 and 2015 with an estimated net worth of $1 billion, but he fell off the list in 2016.

Who was onboard tech mogul Mike Lynch's Bayesian yacht?

Six people are missing, including a man dubbed the British Bill Gates, after a luxury yacht sank off the Sicilian coast.

British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch — freshly acquitted from a decade-long trial — had invited his work colleagues aboard a trip through the Mediterranean coast when a freak storm saw the yacht sink within moments.

Fifteen people escaped from the sinking vessel. The search for the missing continues.

Here's what we know so far: 

What happened?

The Italian coastguard said the yacht — the Bayesian — was anchored off the shore of port city Porticello, near the Sicilian capital Palermo, when it was hit by bad weather sometime after 4am on Monday, local time. 

Eyewitnesses said it vanished quickly beneath the waves shortly before dawn.

Managers of the sailing vessel Bayesian, Camper & Nicholsons, confirmed to the ABC that the Bayesian encountered severe weather and subsequently sank. 

"Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew," they said. 

"The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude," a coastguard official told Reuters.

Sicily's civil protection agency head, Salvo Cocina, said a waterspout — a tornado over the water — could have struck the yacht.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," Mr Cocina added. 

Storms and heavy rainfall had swept down Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat, lifting the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea to record levels and raising the risk of extreme weather conditions, experts told Reuters.

"The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius, which is almost 3 degrees more than normal. This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," meteorologist Luca Mercalli said.

Captain Karsten Borner of the Sir Robert Baden Powell vessel told journalists he noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm, but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realised the ship had simply disappeared.

Mr Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Search crews, including helicopters and divers, are continuing to search the wreckage, lying at a depth of 49 metres.

Specialist divers reached the ship on Monday but access was limited due to objects in the way, the fire brigade said.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment.

The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was "providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families".

Sicilian prosecutors have also opened an investigation into the event. 

Who is missing?

There were 12 passengers and 10 crew members aboard the yacht. 

Mr Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries, including Britain, the United States, Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain.

Of the 22, one man is confirmed dead and another six people are still missing. 

They are believed to be inside the hull, fire rescue spokesperson Luca Cari said.

Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman who said he responded to a flare from the vessel but found it sunk, said he stayed at the site for three hours without finding anyone.

"I think they are inside, all the missing people," he said.

Rescue teams recovered the body of the yacht's onboard chef on Monday, identified as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas.

The still missing people include: 

• Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah 
• Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of global financial services company Morgan Stanley International
• Chris Morvillo , a lawyer at the British multinational law firm Clifford Chance. He worked on Mr Lynch's lawsuit against Hewlett-Packard
• The identities of the remaining two missing are still unconfirmed

Who was rescued? 

Fifteen people escaped from the sinking ship. 

Eight have been hospitalised and others were taken to a nearby hotel.

Among those rescued were:

• Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who was the owner of the yacht
• Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter, Sofia. Ms Golunski is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm, Invoke Capital. She says she momentarily lost hold of Sofia in the water but managed to hold her up above the waves until the lifeboat was inflated
• Ms Golunski's husband James Emslie
• New Zealand captain of the yacht James Catfield. He told Italian newspaper La Repubblica the crew didn't see the storm coming
• A lone Dutch citizen was identified by the Dutch foreign ministry as being rescued, but was not identified

Who is Mike Lynch?

Mr Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was recently freed from a Silicon Valley lawsuit that tarnished his legacy. 

The 59-year-old Cambridge-educated mathematician created Autonomy , a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly. 

He received the OBE for his innovation in 2006. 

He then sold the software to Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $US11 billion ($16 billion) in 2011, with Mr Lynch personally netting $US800 million. 

HP valued Autonomy at $US46 billion ($68 billion) in the months leading up to the deal.

But the deal quickly turned sour after he was accused of forging the software's financial records to make the sale.

As part of a decades-long legal battle against HP, Mr Lynch was extradited to the UK on criminal fraud charges. 

He steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he was being made a scapegoat for HP's own bungling. 

He was eventually cleared of all charges in June this year. 

Although he avoided a possible prison sentence, Lynch still faced a bill from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven't been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $US4 billion. 

Following the San Francisco trial, Mr Lynch said he would return to the UK and do what he loved most: "[being with] my family and innovating in my field."

The holiday appeared to be something of a celebration after Mr Lynch's acquittal, with guests including some of the people who had stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal.

In a separate act of tragedy, Mr Lynch's co-defendant in the trial, Stephen Chamberlain, died on Monday, after a road accident left him critically injured.

Mr Chamberlain — Autonomy's former vice-president of finance alongside Mr Lynch — was hit by a car in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning and had been placed on life support. 

What is the Bayesian?

The luxury yacht is 56m long sailboat, with a 75m mast labelled as the tallest aluminium mast in the world.

It was previously named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites and a crew of 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. It was last refitted in 2020.

Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $AU 321,000) a week.

The ship also won a string of awards for its design. 

Ms Golunski said the yacht had travelled through the Aeolian Islands, Milazzo and Cefalù before sinking. 

It is likely the yacht's name would resonate with Mr Lynch because his PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on Bayesian theory.

Built-in boarding steps on port and starboard sides make entering the large cockpit easy. Two steps lead up to port side hinged door salon entrance. A large L-shaped leather couch is on the starboard side, opposite cabinetry with entertainment system on port side. The dinette is forward on port side and across from the galley. Port side companionway is between the dinette and salon and five steps lead down to the belowdecks accommodations. May be an option for my first cheap "unsinkable" yacht before upgrading at a later date. How much longer is the Red Eagle? Can't find any info about them. There's a yellow one for sale online for $1500 but hasn't been sailed for a long time by the looks of it...

The Red Witch was designed to fit under the Fremantle bridge without dropping the mast, hence they can carry their jib to 20-25 knots before reefing. A Red Eagle is a longer version of a Red Jacket, which is a bit different to the Red Witch smaller cabin and sail area. Hi mate I have a red jacket I am in the middle of fixing up to sell. But if you wanted to put in the TLC instead we could negotiate on price. Just upgraded the trailer for it, mechanically everything works well. I had it in the ocean for 2 months and it didn't leak a drop. In the last few years it's had a new keel fibreglassed in, the mast refurbished, marine carpet inside, etc It needs a coat of paint on the top deck, the sails are okay but if you want to go out in a big blow I would look to upgrade. A weekends work. Send me a PM if interested.
