Recent reviews in puerto rico.
José was very responsive to our specific needs, and he was very accommodating for our two younger kids. From having fruit, snacks, and drinks he also had beach toys, snorkel gear, and took pictures for us. Definitely recommend him!
I need more stars to rate this trip and Domingo a 10!!! Everything about this day was beyond amazing!!! The sailing, the amazing beach and swimming….THE LUNCH!!!! But most of all his kindness and hospitality are top notch!!!! Worth every penny and every second of the day!
Highly recommend. We booked a day trip with Jose to Culebra Island (Flamenco beach) and really enjoyed the amazing day. The captain and the mate made our day exciting and unforgettable. There are a lot of beach toys, chairs, snorkeling gears, drinks and snacks on the boat, so you don't need to care about it. For extras you may get a bbq and/or a Seabob, which is cool underwater scooter. Will definitely book again.
This is a must book experience!! Beautiful boat, with an even better captain! He drove the boat so smooth and made a point to try to avoid the huge waves and not get us soaking wet. They had several activities for us (volleyball, football, Sea Bob, shaded umbrella with chairs, etc.) They made us a beautiful light lunch consisting of a full charcuterie board, sandwiches, fruit board, and snacks. They had unlimited drinks ready for us which were DELICIOUS and made sure our drinks were full before we even realized they were low. We visited two stunning islands and had the best time. The water was crystal clear. These are great, friendly people that provide the best possible experience at an affordable boat. 10/10. We will be coming back here for our next trip!
Just an unforgettable experience that we are all still processing in our minds. Before anything, I would like to say how respectfully Jose and Alex treated my family from start to finish. They were kind, accommodating, and wanted us to get the most out of our experience. Everything had a personal touch, from the trip to the island, setting up at the beach, providing the food, teaching us how to use the equipment... everything. The scenery, location, and the trip to the different islands were a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Thank you for making this my wife's best birthday ever, Jose and Alex.
We had an amazing day on the water with Black Octopus Tours. From planning the trip to our time snorkeling and splashing around, everything was top notch for our family of four. No details were left out, including having all the food and drinks we needed, snorkeling gear, beach toys, and even picking our own playlist. I HIGHLY recommend!!

Sail Puerto Rico & Spanish Virgin Islands
- Location Guide
Sailing the Island of Enchantment, and Much More Besides
Puerto Rico is an understated destination, not just for what it has but for what it puts you in reach of: magical places inviting you to explore by sailboat, A yacht charter in Puerto Rico usually includes the archipelago known as the Spanish Virgin islands, the region's main sailing destination.
As an unincorporated territory of the United States, Puerto Rico is easy to access and get around. The currency is the US dollar and English is widely used along with Spanish. Puerto Rico and the islands to its east enjoy a Caribbean climate and are very welcoming of visitors. A number of operators supply bareboat and crewed charters from marinas at the eastern end of Puerto Rico island, about a one-hour drive from San Juan International Airport.
Fun and Adventure on a Puerto Rico Sailing Vacation
Easily accessible from the USA and with the full range of expected Caribbean attractions, Puerto Rico is another fine charter destination.
Your trip to Puerto Rico for a sailboat holiday may start in the capital city San Juan for some cultural experience and historical context. But as the sailing focus is squarely on the archipelago traditionally known as the Spanish Virgin Islands, your travels may well take you straight to Puerto Del Rey Marina adjacent to the town of Fajardo and Puerto Del Rey marina, one of the Caribbean's largest boat harbors.
From Fajardo the waters of the Caribbean open up, and a short sail east brings you to the first of a string of islands that stretch all the way to South America.
Visit the Spanish Virgin Islands
Your Puerto Rico charter boat vacation will likely concentrate around the Spanish Virgin Islands, all part of the US-administered territory. The largest island is Vieques, a short sail from the mainland where you may like to spend your first (or last) night aboard. A series of fine anchorages dot the southern side of the island, one of the most popular being Ensenada Honda at the eastern end. .
Anchor in the azure waters off a white sandy Vieques beach, and your presence in the Caribbean strikes home. The island is a wonderful setting, with a scattering of barrios and a large wildlife refuge where the US Navy's bomb testing range is consigned firmly to history. Mosquito Bay is a special place, the brightest bio-luminescent bay in the world where the conditions are just right for the trapped organisms to shine.
Enjoy the Caribbean's natural island beauty
Sailing northward a short distance brings you to the group of islands centered on Culebra. There are numerous places to explore around here, both in the water and out. Nature is at its finest in this relatively undeveloped place, and the waters teem with marine life. Of the world's seven turtle species, three make the Virgin islands home.
Among the most popular spots for a charter stopover in this corner of the Spanish Virgin Islands are Culebrita, Cayo Luis Pena and the fine anchorage at the town of Culebra itself. This is the place to indulge in some local shopping and take the opportunity to re-provision.
From Culabrita it should only take three to four hours to get back to base at Fajardo. But to extend your stay among the islands, spend a final night at Isla Palaminos. The island is highly developed with resorts, and day-trippers visit by ferry. But there's still a nice peaceful bay or two where you can tuck in for the night and watch the sun set, before returning to the marina for your 10.00am disembarkation. Perhaps to see more of what Puerto Rico has to offer.

What Choose
Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Puerto Rico
At Yachting.Rent, we offer you the choice of sailing on either a sailing boat or a catamaran in the captivating waters of Puerto Rico. But how to choose? Let’s delve into the specifics of each to help you make an informed decision.
Sailing boats, traditional monohulls, are a classic choice. Known for their deep hulls and single masts, sailing boats are perfect for those who want a true, dynamic sailing experience. They tilt with the wind, providing an exhilarating sense of adventure. With their streamlined design, sailing boats can cut through the water smoothly, making them ideal for exploring the crystal-clear Caribbean waters and hidden coves of Puerto Rico’s many islands.
On the other hand, catamarans are increasingly popular for their stability, spaciousness, and comfort. Their twin-hulled design ensures a smooth and steady journey, minimizing the tilt and making them a great choice for families or those who prefer a more laid-back sailing experience. Catamarans also offer larger deck spaces and interior cabins, allowing for more comfort and relaxation as you bask in the Puerto Rican sun. Their shallow draft also makes them perfect for anchoring in Puerto Rico’s shallow waters or near the beach.
At Yachting.Rent, we offer both options to ensure you can choose the vessel that suits your sailing style and preferences. Each of our boats is well-equipped and maintained to the highest standards, ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey.
Whether you prefer the classic feel of a sailing boat or the comfort and stability of a catamaran, Yachting.Rent can cater to your needs. Our dedicated team is always ready to assist you in selecting the perfect boat for your dream Puerto Rican sailing adventure. Choose Yachting.Rent and let the Caribbean charm of Puerto Rico captivate you.

Puerto Rico Prices: A Complete Guide
Updated September 11, 2023
Puerto Rico’s travel prices suit pretty much every budget due to the island’s relatively low cost of living. Take a look at this guide to Puerto Rico prices for travelers, organized by region and city, to help build your perfect Puerto Rico itinerary. Questions after reading? Send us a message!
Region #1: Northern Puerto Rico
Since most major airlines fly to the San Juan International Airport, odds are that your travels in Puerto Rico will begin on the island’s northern coast. These northern cities encompass many of Puerto Rico’s main tourist attractions, so travel prices are higher than average.
- Lodging: For most travelers, the best places to stay in San Juan are Old San Juan, Santurce, Condado, Miramar, and Rio Piedras. In these neighborhoods, nice hotels can range from $150–$300 per night. On the flipside, Airbnbs often run from $40–$95 per night.
- Transport: Uber is often the cheapest way to travel in Puerto Rico, with most trips within the city costing under $10. Taxis are less reliable and tend to be more expensive ($9+ per ride).
- Food: You can expect to pay $5–$10 for casual meals and street food; just be sure not to stray too close to cruise ships, where food prices rise sharply. San Juan’s 4- or 5-star restaurants can cost upwards of $40 per person.
- Activities: When on tours in San Juan (which are very flexible on price), a normal 20% tip is considered polite.
- Lodging: Upscale hotels (4–5 stars) in Fajardo run $130+ per night; locally-owned hotels (averaging 2–3 stars) go for $50+ per night. VRBO rentals with multiple bedrooms go for $130+ per night, and full Airbnb guesthouses range from $50–$90.
- Transport: Pick up a rental car in San Juan for $10–$14 per day, then drive an hour east to Fajardo.
- Food: Most of Fajardo’s restaurants are casual, averaging $11–$15 per meal. When dining in Puerto Rico, tipping 15–20% is the norm.
- Activities: Ferry rides to Vieques and Culebra (some of Puerto Rico’s most stunning beaches) cost $4.50 round-trip. Snorkeling and boating tours from Fajardo go for $80–$110 per group.
- Lodging: Dorado offers three major forms of accommodation—all-inclusive resorts ($500+), hotels ($200+), and ($70–$95).
- Transport: No public transit goes to or from Dorado. The nearest car rental hub is the San Juan International Airport (40 minutes west), where car rentals average $10–$14 per day.
- Food: Dorado’s restaurants tend to be upscale, costing around $30–$50 per meal. Dorado is also home to small pizzerias averaging $10 per person.
- Activities: Resort beaches are very well-kept and often open to the public, so your main beach-day costs will be chair or towel rentals ($15–$30) and snacks ($10–$20). Dorado’s famous boat tours go for $165+.
- Lodging: Apartments and houses with swimming pools go on Airbnb for around $50–$100 per night. The most highly-rated hotels in the area are family-owned and average $125 per night.
- Transport: Arecibo is a little over an hour west of San Juan, where car rentals average $10–$14/day.
- Food: Sit-down meals at Arecibo’s local restaurants and bakeries average $10 per person. Tipping culture is the same as in the U.S.
- Activities: Nearby popular sites (Rio Camuy Cave Park, Cueva del Indio, Arecibo Observatory) charge $5–$18 for admission. Tours are normally included with admission, and you aren’t expected to tip. Some attractions require daily parking passes to be purchased for $5–$10.
Central Puerto Rico
Most travelers stick to Puerto Rico’s coastlines and totally miss out on the sightseeing wonders of central Puerto Rico. Nestled in the Cordillera Central mountain range, these 3 must-visit towns are both affordable and full of some of the best things to do in Puerto Rico.
- Lodging: Utuado offers two main options for lodging. Airbnb offers condos, houses, apartments, and “glamping” tents for $60–$100 per night. Locally-owned inns, known as paradores, average $140 per night.
- Transport: The biggest nearby city is Ponce (1 hour south), where you can pick up rental cars ranging from $16–$20 per day.
- Food: Utuado’s restaurants serve local Puerto Rican cuisine for $7–$15 per meal, with lunch tending to be the most inexpensive meal.
- Activities: Nearby attractions like Lago Dos Bocas and Río Abajo State Forest are free to enter, but additional activities like camping and boat rides cost $3–$5 per person.
- Lodging: Haciendas, local coffee farms with accommodations, are tropical bed-and-breakfasts in Jayuya that average $125 per night. are usually private rooms for $39–$50 / night, but sometimes you can rent entire haciendas for $90–$200 / night.
- Transport: Much the same as Utuado, rental car and gas prices add to around $30 / day, found an hour south in Ponce.
- Food: Coffee and pastries at Jayuya’s local cafes go for $3–$7. Family-style restaurants offer meals for $10–$15 per person, while upscale restaurants average $15–$35 per meal.
- Activities: Mountain trails and local coffee farms (haciendas) are the main attractions in Jayuya. Entry to these sites is usually free. (you could do it yourself, but why it?)
Barranquitas
- Lodging: Barranquitas offers a variety of lodging options—haciendas ($60–$120), locally-owned hotels ($60–$100), paradores (another form of bed-and-breakfast, $125+), and Airbnb hotel rooms and apartments ($55–$150).
- Transport: Rental cars from Ponce (an hour southwest) and gas combined average $30 / day. Publicos, company-owned vans, and operate from Barranquitas to Bayamon (close to San Juan) and cost $15 max per ride—however, they’re much slower and less reliable than rental cars.
- Food: Restaurants in Barranquitas are casual, specializing in pizza and Puerto Rican cuisine and averaging $10–$15 per meal.
- Activities: Entry to nearby national parks is totally free, with some parks charging $3–$5 for parking passes. Ziplining and caving tours go for $185–$205 per person.
Eastern Puerto Rico
Home to Puerto Rican highlights like El Yunque and Isla de Monos (Monkey Island), eastern Puerto Rico’s travel costs tend toward the pricier side because of heavy tourism. However, seeing this area is totally doable even on a cheap trip to Puerto Rico.
- Lodging: Vieques accommodations are in high demand, even in off-peak season, as it’s one of Puerto Rico’s most popular vacation spots. Book at least 2 months in advance for best rates. Per night, hotels run for $80–$300; Airbnbs go for $80–$200, and VRBO rentals average $125–$300.
- Transport: Vieques is accessible by ferry from northeastern Ceiba for $4 round trip. Ferries go between Ceiba and Vieques from 6 AM to 8:15 PM. For less travel time but more expense, flights from San Juan to Vieques average $230 round trip.
- Food: At bars and cafes on Vieques, meals are $8–$15 per person. Upscale restaurants average $25–$50 per person. Some travelers save money by bringing coolers to the beach, but doing so is considered impolite by locals.
- Activities: Vieques National Wildlife Refuge is free and open to the public, as are most beaches. Spots like Bioluminescent Mosquito Bay are accessible by tours, which go for $50–$175 per person. Island-hopping and snorkeling tours from Vieques range from $75–$175 per person; these are some of the best activities in Puerto Rico, though, so they’re well worth the cash.
- Lodging: Hotels in Culebra go for $120–$350 per night. Airbnb apartments range from $90–$120 per night, while Airbnb houses and villas are $90–$220 (these higher lodging prices reflect the fact that Culebra is perhaps the best place to vacation in Puerto Rico).
- Transport: The ferry from Ceiba to Culebra is $5 round trip and operates from 4 AM to 8:15 AM. Flights from San Juan to Culebra (and vice-versa) only operate on weekends and average $210.
- Food: Locals bars and cafes offer cocktails and meals for $3–$15, with sit-down restaurants maxing out at $20.
- Activities: Culebra’s world-famous beaches (Zoni, Flamenco, Soldado, Brava) average a $6 entry fee. Chairs, umbrellas, and towels can be rented for $5–$10 each. Touring Culebra’s surrounding mini-islands by boat costs $50–$110 per person.
- Lodging: Hotels and resorts in Humacao range from $110–$160 per night. Airbnb and VRBO rentals go for $35–$125 a night.
- Transport: Rental cars from San Juan (55 minutes north of Humacao) cost $10–$12 per day. Plan on spending $12–$15 on gas per day, given its proximity to El Yunque and other highlights.
- Food: Traditional Puerto Rican and seafood restaurants in Humacao offer $5–$12 meals.
- Activities: El Yunque and the Humacao Nature Preserve are free to enter and hike, but spots like Cayo Santiago are only accessible by boat tours or kayak rentals, which average $55–$100 per person.
- Lodging: Hotels in Grande run for $130–$150 a night, and all-inclusive resorts begin at $500+ per night.
- Transport: Rental cars from San Juan (40 minutes north of Rio Grande) cost $10–$12 per day.
- Food: Cafes, bars, and barbeques serve meals for $5–$12. Upscale restaurants cost $30–$45 per meal.
- Activities: Entry to El Yunque is free, as is the entry to local beaches like Monserrate and Luquillo.

Explore historical Puerto Rico
The history of Puerto Rico starts around 430 BC, but takes a dramatic turn with the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1493 on the island. Diseases that were previously unknown spread like wildfire among the indigenous population - amongst the exploitation by the Spanish and the involvement in war, it led to many deaths on the island. Due to its geopolitically strategic position, it became a playground for various European powers until 1898 - the year it fell into the hands of the United States. The country is still under US control until today.
Parque Ceremonial Indígena de Caguana is a park where many remnants of the indigenous population have been found. Stones with interesting paintings can be admired here. The plazas that have been discovered here, are known to have been used for all kinds of ceremonies. Similar sites can be found in Centro Ceremonial Indígena de Tibes .
Castillo San Felipe del Morro , a UNESCO world heritage site, was built in the 16th to protect the island from invaders - after the Spanish had conquered the island. You should visit the fort to learn more about its history AND to enjoy the most stunning view over the ocean as well as the island.
Discover mystical Puerto Rico
Every country, tribe or people have their own explanations on how the world was once created. The story of the indigenous people of Puerto Rico, the Taino, revolves around Atabei who was said to be mother earth who had two sons. One of her sons, Yucajú, turned this earth into a more beautiful place than the one his mother created. He is also said to have created the sun and the moon. He even created his own son, a cross between g’d and animal - Locuo. His brother became increasingly jealous and tried to destroy everything Yucajú had created. Lucky for him he had his son Locuo, who created the first woman and the first man. The Taino believed that they all descended from these first people on Earth. Isn’t it interesting that the same stories were told in different ways in other parts of the world as well? People are often much more alike than they think they are.
Sailing conditions in Puerto Rico
The tropical climate in Puerto Rico ensures that it stays warm all year round. An average temperature of 26 degrees is dominating the island. But beware: Hurricane season in late summer is probably not the best time to go out on a sailing adventure. We would recommend you to rent a boat in Puerto Rico between January and April. The temperatures are ideal and it stays dry. If you want to visit the island between May and October, you should expect a little bit more rain.
Puerto Rico is the perfect spot for a yacht rental in the Caribbean . You will find perfect wind conditions that allow for an unforgettable sailing adventure without dangerously rough seas. However, if you prefer to have a bit more of an adventure, you might consider sailing out into the open ocean - we would only recommend this option with a promising weather forecast and to experienced sailors. You might want to consider a boat rental with a skipper who knows the waters in this part of the Caribbean very well.
How much does it cost to rent a boat in Puerto Rico?
How much it costs to rent a boat in Puerto Rico depends on many factors like the season, the boat type, the size of the boat and how many people will join you on the boat rental. A bareboat charter will mostly be used for anyone travelling on a boat.
Renting a boat in Puerto Rico is not the cheapest kind of holiday, you will pay 321 EUR on average per person per day for a motorboat.
What type of boat is best for sailing in Puerto Rico?
What kind of boat you should rent for a sailing holiday in Puerto Rico totally depends on the type of boat vacation you would like to experience. If you aim to see all the wonderful remote beaches Puerto Rico has to offer, you would go for a different type of water vehicle than when you want the wind on your skin to make you feel completely free.
Rent a catamaran in Puerto Rico
Pros of renting a catamaran in Puerto Rico
One of the advantages of renting a catamaran in Puerto Rico is the fact that the shallow draft allows you to sail closer to the shore. This makes this type of boat the perfect yacht to discover hidden beaches and to anchor closer to the shore without any worries about hitting something that is hidden underwater. Especially the islands of Vieques and Culebra to the east of Puerto Rico are popular sailing destinations in this part of the Caribbean due to its untouched and incredibly beautiful sandy beaches.
Catamarans are also more stable than other types of boats - a great advantage for anyone who tends to get seasick easily. Standing on two hulls makes it the perfect boat rental for a family vacation.
Equipped with both an engine and a sail, you are well prepared for your sailing vacation in Puerto Rico. Use the sail to make the most of the winds, but use the engine when the wind stops blowing so that you don’t get stuck anywhere in the middle of the ocean.
One of the most popular catamarans to rent in Puerto Rico is the brand new Catamaran Lagoon 42 . Up to six people can sleep on the boat. For some extra fun, rent a SUP or a kayak in addition to the bareboat charter.
Cons of renting a catamaran in Puerto Rico
One of the downsides of renting a catamaran is its size. In high season it might become difficult to find a spot for mooring in the marinas. Rather than trying to find a spot in a marina to spend the night, you should try and find a quiet bay where you can anchor for the night and wake up to a beautiful sunset. This beats any spot in any harbour!
Rent a sailboat in Puerto Rico
Pros of renting a sailboat in Puerto Rico
With ideal wind conditions, renting a boat in Puerto Rico is the perfect choice for anyone who loves sailing over turquoise waters along the most stunning coastlines. While you get to enjoy some beautiful views in the Caribbean, the sailing experience is the most important factor in choosing a sailboat rental in Puerto Rico. Ideal wind conditions make it the perfect water vehicle in this part of the world.
Sail to the nearby islands of Vieques and Culebra or even further to the British Virgin islands . Feel the breeze on your face and anchor in some of the most beautiful remote beaches.
One of the most popular sailboats in Puerto Rico is Sailboat Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440 , a 14 meter long boat that takes your breath away. Up to six people can sleep on the boat and you can rent the sailboat with or without a captain. If you don’t have a lot of experience sailing in the Caribbean, we would recommend you to hire a skipper or captain to navigate you through the sea.
Cons of renting a sailboat in Puerto Rico
Sailboats require more skills than driving a catamaran or motorboat. This might be one of the downsides if you lack the experience. However, practice makes perfect and with an experienced skipper by your side, you will become a professional in no time.
Another downside is the fact that sailboats are dependent on the wind. If the wind suddenly stops blowing, you might get stuck in the middle of the ocean without any option to move. This might be incredibly frustrating if you only booked your boat in Puerto Rico for a week.
Rent a motorboat in Puerto Rico
Pros of renting a motorboat in Puerto Rico
Renting a motorboat in Puerto Rico comes with many advantages. One of them is the speed. Motorboats are generally faster than other types of water vehicles, making them the perfect choice for anyone who wants to experience as much of Puerto Rico and the surrounding islands as possible.
Unlike sailboats, motorboats don’t have a keel. This makes them the perfect choice for anyone who wants to explore the hidden beaches and bays for a truly relaxed vacation. You can sail in shallow waters without worrying too much about hiding something underwater.
One of the most popular motorboats to rent in Puerto Rico is the Motorboat Hydra-Sports 3300 VX which includes a captain. Snorkeling equipment is already waiting for you on board for some extra fun on your sailing vacation in Puerto Rico. The 33 meter long yacht can host up to six guests, making it the perfect vehicle for an intimate vacation with your closest friends.
Cons of renting a motorboat in Puerto Rico
One of the downsides of renting a motorboat in Puerto Rico is the fact that their fuel is not the wind, but petrol. With the ever increasing prices, you might get a juicy bill for all the miles you sailed.
Unless you rent a luxurious motorboat, these types of boats are not necessarily known for their spacious cabins. You will definitely not spend your days hiding away under deck - you will definitely enjoy all the time you have on board with your friends sunbathing, snorkelling or swimming. After all, this is what a sailing vacation is all about, right?
Charter a luxury yacht in Puerto Rico
Charter a luxury yacht in Puerto Rico for a very special summer vacation. A luxury yacht offers all the amenities you could hope for while spending your holiday on a boat. Plenty of space, a sundeck to enjoy the sun and plenty of space to have dinner with all your friends who are joining you on this trip. Up to 12 guests can find space on this yacht, meaning that you can bring all your friends. After all, what good is a boat party without the right music?
What kind of boat license do you need when renting a boat in Puerto Rico?
When sailing in Puerto Rico you don’t need a boat licence to operate a boat - unless you are a resident of the island state. For non-residents it is enough to present their ID and to ensure that they receive sufficient instructions on how to operate the boat that they are renting.
Sailing routes in Puerto Rico

That is quite an agenda for 5 days, especially if that includes travel time to the island and back. You would need to rent a car.The island is much larger and more expansive than most people imagine with A LOT of traffic, especially in the San Juan Metro area that has about 2 million people. It would be best to pick one location and stick with it, its beaches, restaurants and points of interest.
