Biggest Trailerable Alloy Boats

trailer yacht nz

How big do you want to go? We look at some of the biggest trailerable alloy boats on the local market and offer some hints on what to look for when checking out the many brands and models.

trailer yacht nz

In recent years, there has been a real growth in big alloy trailer boats and if you are looking for a boat around 7m – 8m, there are plenty of chooses. The majority are hardtops and the choice of power is either twin outboards or diesel sterndrives. But what if even that isn’ t big enough and you want something the falls in that space between a big trailer boat and small launch. When you start to research what is available around 10m plus you have to consider a whole new set of criteria.

Firstly there is the question of towing, or perhaps not. While it’ s entirely possible to get a 10m x 2.5m beam hull, the fact is that’ s too narrow in the beam and most designers would opt for aminimum of 2.8m and above. This then brings up the question of towing regulations, which with a boat this size takes in overall length, beam and weight.

The rules are reasonably simple if you keep the beam below 3m, but start creeping over that and you have yourself a whole lot more things to consider when you’ re towing. But more on that later. So more often than not the majority of alloy boats over 10m are over 3m so need to be moored, or at least kept on a dry stack. This has the added benefit of not requiring a trailer and the $30,000 to $40,000 saved here goes a long way into the cost or a marina berth or dry stack rental.

Things to Consider

trailer yacht nz

Buying a trailer boat over 10m is not a lot different to buying one at 5m, it’s just things are compounded by volume and weight. In both cases, you have some things to consider, such as storage, towing, power, suitability and of course, cost. While cost is a consideration when buying a big trailer boat, it is perhaps not as important as someone buying a more entry level rig. Boats vary widely in price and to put a 10m plus alloy hardtop boat on the water can cost you $300,000 to more than $600,000.

It all depends on who’ s building it and just how far you want to go with the engineering, painting and electronics fit out. Your power options will have a significant impact on the final cost also. While a pair of 250-300hp outboards will set you back around $80,000, a 350-400hp diesel sterndrive is going to run to upwards of $90,000. Electronics in boats of this size are more than just a $400 fishfinders  and again 12’ -16” MFD screens and all the associated add-ons such as a 1000w transducer, radar, night vision, EPIRBS, etc. can run well over $20,000.

trailer yacht nz

If you do plan to tow you big rig, then you will require something seriously grunty to tow it. Diesel 4WDs are certainly the most popular and while most, such as the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max and Holden Colorado are rated to 3500 kgs, you are going to need something a lot bigger if you plan to put your 10m plus boat on the road. Big ’ trucks’ such as those offered by Ford, GM and Dodge are now readily available through dealers and provide the power and braking ability for big trailer boats. For example a Ford F150 has a tow rating of 5,500 kgs and a Dodge Ram 250/6.7 l Cummins diesel has a capacity of 8155 kgs.

Towing Regulations

trailer yacht nz

While on the subject of tow ability, it’s probably a good time to look at some of the things you need to know about towing. The New Zealand Land Transport Agency (www.nzta.govt.nz) is a good place to start. Big trailer boats require big trailers, mostly tandem but even triple axle with brakes and all the necessary security attachments. Today it is not uncommon to see trailer boats advertised with beams more than the legal maximum in New Zealand of 2.5m. However, getting a special permit to tow an over-width vehicle up to 3.0m is not an important issue.

All it means is you have to carry some extra signage at the rear of the trailer and you will have some restrictions on the hours you are allowed to tow. Simply plan your trips and the inconvenience will be quickly outweighed by the benefits of having your boat where you want it. If your rig is over 3.0m wide, you start getting into all sorts of complications with special permits, pilot vehicles, etc. No matter what size your rig, a speed limit of 90km/h applies.

Designed for a Purpose

trailer yacht nz

Every boat is different and not all are designed to do the same thing. While one offers vast accommodation and entertaining spaces, another may have a massive cockpit that lends itself to fishing. You may want a boat that offers more of the overnighting and extended stay aspects, as opposed to one that is designed for hardout fishing. In most cases, but not all, they are aluminium hardtops. The dividing line is usually between having a wheelhouse, often enclosed, with a small bunk area forward and a big workable cockpit.

New Zealand has certainly developed the enclosed hardtop trailer boat better than virtually anywhere else in the world. They are now an iconic part of our local boating culture. It’s not uncommon to see air conditioning and heating systems inside, so the boat becomes an all-year, all-weather experience.

Dinettes, galleys and enclosed heads are all the norm now, especially when you are looking boats over 10m. Anyone who boats in the Deep South will appreciate the benefits of an enclosed wheelhouse during the winter and the addition of a heating system. If you are not into serious fishing and want more of a compact cruiser, then there are a number of brands and models to look at, although when it comes to alloy, these are commonly custom built.

trailer yacht nz

That’ s the beauty of aluminium, you can change a basic layout to suit what you require, such as having an internal or external toilet, the size of the galley, the length of the wheelhouse and whether the table drops to make another berth. Firstly it should have accommodation for at least two and even better for four or even six. Generally, an average size cabin has twin berths of around 1.8m to 2m in length. Some have the bonus of an infill to transform that entire cabin area into one huge berth and something we are seeing a lot more now are retractable pipe berths.

It must have a galley or at least some reasonable cooking area to prepare a meal for all aboard and it must have a head/toilet. A true weekender that has been purpose designed for the job will also have a shower although this maybe just a hand-held in the cockpit. Hot water can be accessed via a califont or by plumbing into the engine (both inboard and outboard) and there’ s usually plenty of space somewhere in the construction to build in a reasonable large fresh water tankage system.

trailer yacht nz

If you have a clip-on backdrop from the canopy, then the whole cockpit can be transformed into one cosy cabin. If you are planning on doing a bit of overnighting, then a backdrop is well worth considering. So what about cooking? In most cases a boat over 10m will have a dedicated galley, with all the hot and cold water options on hand and a compact convection microwave oven with a couple of gas burners. If the boat doesn’t have a galley, then the simplest way is probably a barbeque, such as a small gas BBQ with a rod holder mount and wind deflectors.

There are some excellent brands available, such as Magna, specially designed for the purpose. Food storage is another important area to consider, especially if you’ re not a fisherman and don’ t plan to fill your culinary needs from the sea. Even then your best efforts may prove fruitless (should that be fishless?) – and a nice juicy steak might just save the day. Again if you don’ t have a built-in freezer/fridge, then one of the large portable ice  chests from brands such as Engel will do the job nicely. You can get ones that plug into the auxiliary plug and run a small compressor to chill everything down or simply toss in some ice.

trailer yacht nz

These come in a variety of sizes to suit the space you have available and depending on just how many times you open and close the lid they can keep things cold and fresh for a remarkably extended period. Of course, as the food and drink go, you can always fill the space with fresh seafood to take home. As for the toilet issues, if you want to do everything by the letter of the law then you need to install a fully plumbed head or have a portable loo. While the ‘ bucket and chuck it’ method always worked well in the past, it is, in fact, illegal to dump human waste into the bay unless you are well offshore.

Consider having your toilet compartment in the cockpit, as there is nothing worse than toilet odours eminating  throughout the wheelhouse. Lighting is another area that you need to consider if you want to keep a nice ambient feeling aboard the boat. Just be conscious of the power they are drawing, so you don’ t end up in the morning with flat batteries. This is where the low draw of an LED comes into its own and is great in this type of situation. Hella make a range of excellent LED cabin and cockpit lights which can both light up the fishing and interior space or just provide some ambient light.

trailer yacht nz

This is where the low draw of an LED comes into its own and is great in this type of situation. Hella make a range of excellent LED cabin and cockpit lights which can both light up the fishing and interior space or just provide some ambient light. Floodlights are great when fishing at night, as are underwater lights. Aqualuma is one of the world leaders in underwater lights and their new units are ideally suited to flush fitting into the hull or can be mounted onto the trim tabs.

They not only look good when you are parked in the bay at night but they also act as a fish attractor. Perfect for whitebait and also squid seem to be drawn to them. Then there is the question of having enough onboard power to run all those extras. Although modern engine alternators are supplying greater battery charging, those who tend to use more lighting and TVs and appliances should look into solar chargers, inverters, or even a small generator. Your battery bank should include at least two batteries, one to start the engine(s), the other to run the electronics.

trailer yacht nz

However, if you are planning to be away for extended periods, unless you constantly run the engine you will soon go short on power. Having a small compact genset might be worth considering or maybe talk to AA Solar about solar panels to keep the batteries topped up.

Plenty of Power

trailer yacht nz

We are fortunate today that the outboard manufacturers are producing seriously big outboards with the power needed to bolt onto the transom of big boats. 300hp-350hp outboards have been around for some time and now there are 400hp stickers on the side of some cowlings. The benefit of the big outboards is that you no longer need to rely on twin midrange engines to achieve the necessary horsepower to gain the best performance.

While a lot of boats are still sold with twin six-cylinder outboards, there is an increasing number being launched with diesel sterndrives. At the end of the day the boat you buy and the engine package you choose is your decision, but make certain that what you buy is suitable for your purpose. Also, if you like a particular brand and you can’ t find a 10m plus model in their brochure, then asked the manufacturer. There’ s a good chance they will oblige and build you exactly what you want.

Custom Made Trailers

We specialise in custom-made trailers for vessels that are not of a standard design or build.  We also have the capability to build to Certificate of Fitness (COF) specification on large boat trailers, and we accept commissions for specialist non-marine trailers.  Contact us directly to discuss your requirements.

All Boats Over 5M Or A Little Bit Special

Whilst getting a trailer custom made for your boat can be a bit daunting we can certainly help you navigate your way through the myriad of choices in order for you to get exactly what you want and need.

Things to consider:

  • Size and weight of the total towed package: boat, engine, trailer, fuel and gear
  • Your tow vehicle capability and braking requirements
  • Manoeuvrability (fewer axles) vs on road stability (multi-axle)
  • Towing surfaces and fixed vs load sharing suspension
  • Loading / unloading / ball height
  • Beach or ramp launch, wind/water conditions
  • Hull construction and vee profile
  • Galvanised vs alloy wheels
  • Any parking or storage constraints
  • Long term care and maintenance

The Process

For the majority of makes and models we will have a specific existing workshop drawing.  If not, or if you have specific requirements, then we have a well-practised process to take certain key measurements from your boat (ideally on site in our yard) from which we then design and build the trailer specifically to fit.   For especially tricky builds we can co-ordinate with you to load and unload your boat onto the fabricated frame before galvanising to ensure a complete fit. After assembly of the completed trailer, the final fitting and adjustment of the trailer to optimise your ease of use (what we call a “boat swap”) is part of our service.  For accuracy, guide poles and certain other accessories are measured as part of this fitting process.

Please contact us to discuss your requirements .

Multifit Trailers

Our multi fit trailers are suitable for most of the lighter/ smaller models of boat.

These trailers are still very much a ‘Hosking Trailer’ and of the exact same quality as our custom made trailers. They are built in our factory in Auckland by the same people and with all the same materials as our custom made trailers. We build them in larger production runs and this enables us to keep the cost down, whilst not compromising on quality.

Trailer sailers

Hi, I've been looking at yachts for years and think I'll get a trailer sailer soon, never sailed, keen to learn....are they a good starting point?

In the long run I would want one for cruising good overnight trips once at a confident level.

If I was to get one, what are some important things to look out for in a trailer sailer?

And what is a decent price range? I was looking at $5000-$10000

Also is there a tradeoff in size? I would want one big enough to sleep us for a night or two but are trailer sailers pushing it when it comes to a crusing size ?

:)

Yes many people had a TS as a first boat. We had a Tasman 20 when I was a kid, but both Dad and I new how to sail before we got it. If you've never sailed before I'd suggest you get some lessons before buying any boat.

That aside; the best boat to buy is one that has been in use and kept maintained, you will pay more for such a boat but it will be cheaper in the long run. Avoid orphan designs, 'projects' and boats that have been parked up unused or left on a mooring for years. Trailers and sails can cost a lot of money to replace, which you will be unlikely to get back on resale.

As an example only:  http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts/trailersailer/auction-1006838822.htm

Assuming it is as described; good sails, alloy trailer that's been kept reg and WOFed, new squabs, lots of extras, proven design from one of NZs best designers and builders etc. etc. If the outboard is good that's a plus but they can be replaced fairly cheaply. IMO you are better to pay 10k for a boat you can use straight away rather than a cheaper one that needs work or big $$ spent before you can sail it.

Whether a 20 footer is big enough is really up to you, how many people you expect to take, and what your comfort expectations are.

Does the size limit you to certain distances? Eg an 18 vs a 22 would the larger be more sea worthy? Like an excursion offshore to say gbi or mercury islands etc or does size not matter as much as build model/design?

Ask Andrew Fagan about that one, I think Swirly World is only 17ft?? It comes down to basically the sailor and then the boat.

From my personal experience we started off as young kids in the p class etc. I then had a break for a few years and started up again in my late 20's with sailing a sunburst and moved on from there.

Anyway to cut a long and rather boring story short I went with a 20 Jim young and sailed it everywhere for a few years until I decided I would like more comfort. While I was still in the trailer sailer mode I got a farr 7five00 ( sorry five key has stopped working) and towed that all around the country for five years. Then as it was a wanted model and easy to sell I sold it and went to a farr 40. That had to be sold after a divorce and now I have a 32ft liveaboard ferro hartley that owns me nothing.

So for my 2 cents worth I would recommend something around the 20ft range that is a known design with easy resale. If the bug bites then you can move it on quickly and buy something else that suits where you are heading. If you are happy with it then you have a good boat.

Distance out to GBI etc really depends on the sailor and knowing the limits of you and the boat. I happily sailed my 20ft across cook strait many times, it was a very wet boat and loved to get up and plane in 20 knots of breeze, never felt unsafe and only wiped out once when hit with 40 knot gust that I wasn't expecting.

Some people head down the path of going bigger as time passes by and they do more sailing and further away. And then some like me find us heading back in the other direction and back to a smaller design but just as seaworthy but easier and cheaper to run

Join or volunteer at a local kids sailing club or with Sailability NZ and you will learn to sail. Always good to get the basic's on board, when I started back into sailing I did a year with the local yacht club in Picton and sailed sunbursts every week. Go and talk to people who have the same boat designs that you are interested in. People love talking about their boats and you will soon enough learn the bad points and maybe get out on a few.

Thanks for that, great info! When you mention wiped out...how/why did that happen and how did you rectify it....I thought it was hard to capsize a yacht...well keelers at least.

I had 2 trailer sailors before I brought my current keeler.

I started with a Kestrel 18 but very quickly grew out of that. I learnt a lot in her but they are not very stable and quite small inside and I wanted something that I could cross cook strait in and cruise the sounds so I brought a 25 ft trailer sailer, which was much more seaworthy and comfortable. But when getting up to this size TS I had to buy a bigger towing vehicle. But I did cross Cook Strait several times in that TS, sailing as far as Abel Tasman park.

In general terms bigger does mean more seaworthy and faster more comfortable sailing, but there is much to it than size, Different designs have different strengths and weaknesses. Light and fast verses heavy and seaworthy.

Remember the trailer is about half of the value of a TS,so don't neglect to inspect the trailer. When looking I came across a TS that was on a steel trailer that had been bogged with builders bog and painted over.

No one can answer the question of what boat to get, It is all up to what you want, some people happily cruise in incredibly small yachts and never get anything larger.

Ummmm.... google chinese gybe.......

I have crewed on a sixty five foot yacht and that happened to us....

In my yacht we had 800l water ballast. Had it set up so we could drain the water when running downhill, so we had on this day. 30 knots behind us, keel half up, about 100l water left on board, hitting sixteen knots while surfing down waves, wind gust from 90 degrees, all over........ lol. Mast in the water, my crew mate overboard and one rather pissed off dog who was asleep in the cabin.

So not really the sort of situation you would put yourself in as a novice or not well aware of what you or you yacht can do.

How did I rectify it?? Gave the dog a pat and told her it was ok and gave her a biscuit, problem solved!! Just got things back together and did it all over again although did put one reef in the main.

But that was an example of knowing what the boat could do and pushing it all the time till you know it inside out and running on the edge of your ability.

Had I been sensible or had the wife on board we would of had three reefs in the main and sailing under that only doing about six knots and having a pleasant sail, even if a bit wet.

Wouldn't sail like that now but my yacht isn't designed to do that. If it ever started surfing down waves I would be pack my underpants with brown smelly stuff.

I personally think a 20ft fiberglass boat designed for cruising is the way to go, lots of choices so get out and start looking and learning to sail.

Agree with most of what has been written above.

In my humble opinion, it's hard to go past the Merlin 6.1 as a 20 foot trailer yacht. Reasonable speed, good stability, and quite roomy for their size. Also the Coronet 20, although they are quite a bit heavier.

On similar threads, people have referred to the NZTYA ratings numbers as gospel. They aren't. While the SRI shows ultimate righting ability from a knockdown, it doesn't really factor in the likes of hull form stability. Or at least it didn't, they may have changed the formula by now. The NZTYA rating, like any performance based system, shows that the boats with the biggest fleets and/or best sailors go faster, but this is often just because they are being sailed better.

An example of that is the Davidson M20. They look a bit tug-boat-esque, and are usually just cruised, joining in the occasional race where they finish near the back. There was one racing in Whangarei a few years back, and when the good guys got on it, they took line honours amongst the mixed 20 footers, beating the merlins, coronets, caribous, and tasmans.

I just saw this on Trademe, used to belong to a friend of mine, was well sorted out back then. Could be worth a look.

I would suggest you check out the NZ Trailer yacht site ( http://www.nztya.nz/trailer-yachts.html ) and read through the reviews. They are dated but contain good background info. Where are you based as that can have an influence. Also check out the near by yacht clubs that have fleets.

There are a few designs that have stood the test of time well.... With no preference ones like Farr 6000 or 7500, the Noelex's, Bonito 22, Merlin, Sabre 20 an 22, Tasman 20, Gazelle, Whiting 22, D20 etc.

As others have commented a looked after one is best.

I think there are some real advantages of choosing a trailer sailor as a cruising yacht rather then a keel boat.

The obvious; neither mooring fees nor anti-fouling (ok you might have trailer park costs but they’re significantly cheaper).

An outboard motor; so much simpler. You can take the motor to the repair shop. And an inboard motor adds so very many extra systems, (water, exhaust, fuel, electricity etc), through hulls etc. For that matter you can take the entire boat and trailer for maintenance/repair, even if it's only to your own home.

If you want to take your boat for a sail around say Lake Taupo, it’s very simple. Don’t know where you’re based but 2 or 3 posts above have mentioned they’ve sailed Cook Strait. But you could also take the boat on the Ferry, that’s a big advantage. Just this week I know of several boats that have had to be left at Picton/Waikawa because their owners had to get back to Welly for work last Monday. That can quickly become expensive, obviously mooring fees, but also now there will be added cost of getting self and crew back down to Picton to bring the boat back in a suitable weather window.

Actually on this I remember once being at D’Urville and boat developed a prop shaft problem. We decided safest to sail to Nelson, (rather than back to Wellington), where the boat could be repaired. But due to weather, and commitments etc it was six weeks before we could get back down to Nelson and sail her home. The mooring fees were pretty horrible, and of course it’s not like your home marina stops charging because the boat isn’t parked in her spot.

And of course in choosing your cruising destination you can drive there. You want to go and sail Fiordland or Bay of Islands or wherever, it’s easy. Whereas with a keel boat, whilst the sailing to/from the destination maybe lots of fun, (and I’m not knocking that), who has the time? Most of us have work responsibilities. I would so enjoy sailing my boat round the Coromandel, trouble is that it's the best part of weeks trip just to get there and a week to get home again (assuming the weather is playing ball). And as above, if something goes amiss much more difficult and expensive to correct away from your home base.

  • Sicily yacht capsize: Kiwi on board luxury boat that sank

This handout frame grab taken and released from a video footage provided by Italian Coastguard, shows a Coast Guard boat with Italian fireboats and an Italian fire brigade helicopter search for six others missing after recovering a victim due to a sailboat sank off the coast of Porticello, nosthwestern of Sicily Island, on August 19, 2024. One person was killed and rescuers were searching for six others missing after a luxury superyacht called "The Bayesian" with 22 people aboard majority of those were British, sank during a sudden storm off the coast of Italy's Sicily, officials said, on August 19, 2024. A New Zealander was on board a luxury yacht that has sunk off the Sicilian capital Palermo in Italy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says.

One person died and six people are missing.

Ayla Ronald, a New Zealander working in London as a lawyer survived the capsizing, her father Lin Ronald has confirmed.

The missing include UK tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his daughter.

Lin Ronald told RNZ his daughter was alive and well, but shaken.

His daughter has been working in London at one of the UK's top law firms, Clifford Chance.

He confirmed Wall Street Journal reports she had worked on Lynch's long-running fraud case in the US over the sale of his company to Hewlett Packard.

The yacht trip was to celebrate Lynch's legal win in the wake of serious charges, including fraud.

Regarding the yacht sinking, Lin Ronald said it was "a very unusual very rapid incident which is very sad for all involved".

The luxury yacht was struck by an unexpectedly violent storm and sank off Sicily early on Monday (local time).

The British-flagged Bayesian , a 56-metre-long sailboat, was carrying 22 people and was anchored just off shore near the port of Porticello when it was hit by ferocious weather, the Italian coast guard said in a statement.

Eyewitnesses said the yacht vanished quickly beneath the waves shortly before dawn. Fifteen people escaped before it went down, including Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who owned the boat, and a one-year-old girl.

The names of the dead and missing were not immediately released, but a person familiar with the rescue operation confirmed that Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, were not accounted for.

Italian media said the dead man was the yacht's onboard chef.

The Italian coast guard said the missing had British, American and Canadian nationalities. Survivors said the trip had been organised by Lynch for his work colleagues.

"The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude," a coast guard official in the Sicilian capital Palermo told Reuters.

The captain of a nearby boat told Reuters that when the winds surged, he had turned on the engine to keep control of his vessel and avoid a collision with the Bayesian , which had been anchored alongside him.

"We managed to keep the ship in position and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone," Karsten Borner told journalists. The other boat "went flat on the water, and then down," he added.

He said his crew then found some of the survivors on a life raft - including a baby girl and her mother - and took them on board before the coast guard picked them up.

Lynch defeated US fraud charges

Lynch spent more than a decade building Britain's biggest software company and then almost as long again fighting fraud charges related to its multi-billion pound sale.

Lynch founded Autonomy from his ground-breaking research at Cambridge University in 1996, and was lauded by shareholders, scientists and politicians when he sold it to Hewlett-Packard for $US11 billion ($NZ18b) 15 years later.

But in late 2012, HP stunned Wall Street and the City of London by alleging a massive accounting scandal at the business, and writing off $8.8b of its value.

Lynch, known for an abrasive intellectual charm, said HP did not know what it was doing with Autonomy, which searched and organised data using patented algorithms based on a mathematics developed in the 18th century by Reverend Thomas Bayes.

He spent the next 12 years in courts trying to clear his name, locked in some of the biggest legal battles in corporate history.

HP pursued Lynch in London's High Court for $5b. It won most of its case in 2022 and is still awaiting the award of damages.

The judge found that Lynch and another colleague had fraudulently concealed a "fire sale" of hardware and engaged in convoluted reselling schemes to mask a shortfall in sales of Autonomy's software, the business HP coveted.

US authorities filed criminal charges including wire fraud and conspiracy against Lynch and sought his extradition.

The British government came under pressure from Lynch's supporters to block the application. If found guilty, Lynch could have faced decades in jail.

But the appeals failed, and Lynch took the stand in San Francisco in his own defence, where he denied wrongdoing and told jurors that HP had botched the integration of Autonomy.

He was acquitted on all charges and freed after a year under house arrest. Lynch said he was "elated".

"I am looking forward to returning to the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field," he said.

A person familiar with the rescue effort said Lynch and his wife, Angela Bacares, were on the 56-metre long British-registered Bayesian sailboat when it was struck by an unexpectedly violent storm and sank off the Sicilian capital Palermo early on Monday.

The yacht was owned by Lynch's family and had 22 people on board when it sank just before sunrise.

Lynch was born in 1965 and was raised in Chelmsford near London where his mother was a nurse and his father a fireman. He said his parents instilled in him an appreciation of the value of education.

At Cambridge University, he studied physics, mathematics and biochemistry, and went on to research signal processing for his doctorate. His thesis is still one of the most widely consulted in the university's library, reports have said.

In 1996, Lynch founded Autonomy which searched and organised complex data such as emails, phones calls and video.

Lynch, who has a herd of rare breed cattle on his estate in Suffolk, East England, used some of the proceeds of the sale of Autonomy to set up venture capital firm Invoke.

It was a major backer of Darktrace, a British cyber security company that US firm Thoma Bravo agreed to buy for $5.32 billion in cash in April.
