Staff was friendly and nice and knowledgeable..

The girls were sweet and funny, making jokes with us. The guys were more reserved and focused on work, but they were more than willing to take pictures of us, and made sure we were comfortable getting on and off the kayak. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and would go here again.

Your employees are awesome!

I've never been at a launch ramp and have someone that was working actually show up and help trailer the boat! Long haired almost dread lock guy walked over helped out and gave a few nice pointers. The gentleman that inspects the boat was also very nice. Hopefully they get some rain though, because the water was getting a bit shallow where you launch your boat.

Will be back for sure!

Rented a 2 person kayak. Friendly and professional staff. Fair prices. Lovely people and a good vibe! Will be back for sure!

It was a snap.

Rented a small pontoon for four to boat around the lake. The pontoon was very reasonably priced for a two hour rental and the yelp discount helped too. The staff was friendly and boarding the boat and getting out on the water was a snap.

Local's Place.

This is my families go to place to rent pontoon boats jet skies and kayaks. The staff is always helpful and pleasant. Went out today on a two man kayak and highly recommend it. Great way to see the lake and exercise! Will definitely continue to use this marina and take my friends! Thanks everyone for always giving us a great experience!

Best Prices.

Cheapest rental prices on the lake, by far. We called around to a few and even if with discounts, none could beat Big Bear Marina's quote.

Wonderful experience.

I am on a family trip & we rented a pontoon boat for an hour! It was awesome! The lake is beautiful & John was amazing. I will for sure come back and do this again next time I visit Big Bear! Wonderful experience.

Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions (and their answers)

Can I swim off the boat?

No, there is no swimming possible from any rental boat on Big Bear Lake as per the lake law. All swimming activities must be conducted within 50 ft of shore, however rental boats must stay in the middle of the 5 mile per hour zone of the lake which is approximately 200-300 ft away from shore and marked with white cylindrical buoys. We will be happy to point out some swimming areas on your map once you have returned from your rental!

Can I beach the boat or dock it somewhere else?

No, all rental boats must stay in the middle of the 5 mile per hour zone of the lake which is approximately 200-300 ft away from shore and marked with white cylindrical buoys. The shoreline of Big Bear Lake is beautiful, but even in areas that look sandy or have docks, there are lots of boulders, weeds, and debris that hide just under the surface of the water. The lake level is regularly low, which may render certain docks unusable. To keep you having fun and to keep our boats afloat and running their best, we ask that you respect the distance rules and keep to deeper water. We’re happy to point out our favorite areas that you can enjoy safely - just ask at the dock!

Can I drink alcohol onboard the boat?

Yes! However, you must also bring a designated driver who will remain sober. Boaters must follow the same laws as cars, and you can and will get a DUI for driving a boat under the influence. We encourage you to enjoy yourselves responsibly!

Can I bring food and beverages onboard?

Yes, absolutely! This is one of our top-recommended activities. No restaurant will have better views than your own private boat on the water. Ask us about table rentals if you would like to add one to your rental for this purpose. Additionally, our staff is ready with a list of favorite local eateries if you want to pick up some take-out on your way.

Can I rent a boat and a Waverunner at the same time??

No. This is a matter of safety. The majority of collisions that happen on this lake occur between parties who know one another. For this reason, we don’t rent a boat and a waverunner, or more than one boat to parties that know one another, nor do we rent to customers who already have their own vessels on the water. We want all of our guests to have a great time while remaining safe and keeping our rentals in the best possible condition for all of our future guests as well. If we find out that you have violated this rental condition, our policy is to immediately revoke the rental and Lake Patrol will return you to the dock with no refund. We hate to be the bummer, so please be honest and respect this one.

Can I tow a tube or waterskier (etc) behind my rental vessel??

No, unfortunately on Big Bear Lake it is illegal to tow anything behind a rental vessel. However, we do offer this as a charter service with professional drivers and instructors if you want to brush up on your wakeboarding, waterskiing, wakesurfing and more. If you want to get out for some laughs on a tube, we’re plenty happy to book you a tubing charter as well!

I have a large party - can I rent 2 boats?

Instead, consider splitting your party and go out on the water in two shifts. We have a small beach area that you are more than welcome to use for the duration of your rental while you wait. Our dockhands will be happy to help you switch out your group at the dock one time during your rental period.

If you have a significantly larger group, consider chartering our Pirate Ship for a private tour. The Pirate Ship can accommodate up to 25 people, comes with a captain, and a guided tour if you so desire. Call either North Shore Landing or Holloway’s Marina and RV Park or go online at bigbearhollowaysmarina.com for a private charter booking.

What's the minimum age to rent? Who can drive?

You must be 18 or older with a valid driver’s license and credit card to rent or drive any vessels with us. Passengers can be any age as long as minors are approved and signed for by a parent or guardian.

What if I'm late?

We book your reservation as a time slot, not a duration of time, because we book rentals back to back throughout the day. For example, if you book a 2 hour rental from 2-4pm, then you have reserved the boat only from 2-4pm, and there is likely someone else at the dock ready to pick up the boat for their 4:15 pm reservation. In this case we cannot adjust your time without cutting into theirs. In short, if you are late, you will be cutting into your own rental time.

We advise that all guests plan to arrive at least an hour ahead of your scheduled rental time, and keep an eye on the traffic. If you are going to be late, give us a call to let us know. We will do everything in our power to accommodate you (short of taking time away from another customer).

What if I need to cancel?

Please refer to your booking for the cancelation policy. Our standard policy is to fully refund any cancelation made 48 hours or more in advance, however that may vary depending on what kind of reservation you have.

How long does it take to ger around the entire lake?

At full speed most of our pontoon rentals can get around the entire lake in about 90 minutes, however we recommend a longer rental to go at a leisurly pace and explore a bit. 2 hours is a sweet spot with young kids. If you're bringing a picnic lunch and chilling out, 3 hours can fly by.

How big is the lake? How deep is it?

When completely full, Big Bear Lake is 7 miles long and about a 1/2 mile wide. At the West end it can get up to 80 feet deep, but the East end averages about 20-30 feet deep. It's big enough to explore, but not so big that you get lost.

Don't expect refunds, regardless of what they state on their website. We were denied refunds on two separate occasions during a single weekend. Things happen, life brings unexpected events. Most good businesses understand this idea and work with their customers to resolve issues. North Shore does not care what the situation is. No refunds, period. The staff is under-trained and clearly shows lack of unity & comprehension. Business model & technology is in need of updating.

We booked a big pontoon boat with North Shore landing. Our experience was pleasant starting with the lot person giving us tips how to drive the boat and the best fishing spots. There was plenty of room for parking for all of us (party of 6). The check in was also quite pleasant and all the staff was enthusiastic and helpful. We had zero problems with deposit, filling out the waivers etc. I would rent a boat from this place again.

We had a lot of fun. More than I had expected. It's a good way to kill 90 minutes and enjoy the view and learn a bit about Big Bear. The captain was very knowledgeable about the history of Big abear... we learned so much. There wereinteresting stops but the last one was the best surprise! Can't tell you all what it is... don't wanna spoil it. But that's all, folks!

Had a great time on our pontoon boat this past Saturday. Our adult children said it was the highlight of our trip to my family's cabin in Big Bear. We rented a cruising pontoon about a week before we headed up and made the reservation for 10:30am for 6 people. Little did we know the current heat wave would also be up in the mountains. Saturday morning the power was out all across Big Bear and we arrived right at our reservation time instead of early due to it taking 4 twenty somethings waaaay to long to get ready without power. The parking lot was packed and we got the last 2 parking spots. The staff was helping many large groups inside and we had to wait a bit. No big deal as we knew with the heat everyone would like to be out on the lake on this gorgeous day, and the woman who checked us in was very nice and attentive. Once checked in we were told we had been upgraded to a luxury pontoon due to so many bookings that day and no cruising pontoons available at our check-in time! North Shore Landing for the win! We went down to the dock and met the sweetest young woman working there. She had dark hair and an accent, but I didn't catch her name. She was awesome and funny and the whole family got a kick out of her. She is a superstar and was working her tail off! The pontoon was very nice and clean. Had to use a towel to get some spiderwebs off that had shown up in some different parts on the pontoon, but we were first in the boat that day and I know it is the mountains and the spiders show up every night and make some webs. No big deal and easily rectified. We got underway all in all about 20 minutes after our scheduled time and had a great time for the almost 4 hours we were on the lake! Made many laps around the lake, ate lunch, and had some drinks on the boat. Bummer the stereo and speakers did not work, nor the onboard sink, but we brought our own speaker and still were able to jam out. Everyone loved it and when we came back and the staff were very helpful with my terrible first parking attempt (been many years since I drove a boat) and then helped us all off and our items and took a great picture of all of us. Thanks for the great weekend and memories NSL!

Photo of Luis S.

The rental process was fairly easy, I did it on line. Even though the website tells you to get there 45 before your scheduled time, it only took us about 15 minutes to complete the waivers and watch a short video on the boating instructions. So we were allowed to get started a little early. We had a great time and everyone was very helpful. We will definitely be returning.

Photo of Dalys T.

My family had the best time renting out a boat from North Shore Landing over the 4th of July weekend! Our boat was not available when it was our turn so they gave us a free upgrade to the luxury boat. The Bluetooth speaker was amazing on the Black Pearl luxury boat and our party of 6 had so much space to explore in the front and back of the boat. We rented a table for our food and it was well worth it. In my opinion, this company has the best dock location of the whole lake, close to the beautiful tall pine trees and the perfect location to watch the sunset. Ivan was very helpful at the dock and the ladies at the desk were also great. Some things to note: the bathroom at the office was a port-a-potee. Parking lot is an average size so definitely arrive early. Don't forget to take snacks! Thank you North Shore Landing for an amazing day, we will definitely be back!

Photo of Ashley M.

Great place for rentals! We rented a pontoon boat during the fourth of July weekend and had an awesome experience. I booked over the phone and the process was super easy. Plenty of parking on site. Lots of friendly staff in the office who explained the rules of the lake. This was my first time driving a boat so I was a little nervous, but the dock crew explained it all so clearly and made me feel more comfortable. My 2 pups were allowed to join which was another plus! Overall it was an amazing time, and I'll definitely be renting from them again in the future.

Photo of Manuel T.

Do not go to this place unless you like to get ripped off, me and my family wanted a nice boat ride, as we were out in the lake a wave hit our boat and got the deck wet, the crew and manager said there is no water allowed to touch the deck, they kept our security deposit of $250 plus the $270 for two hours, They accused us of jumping in the lake and breaking rules. (Complete accusation & unprofessional) Total fees = $530.00 for two hours If your boat accidentally gets wet it's considered damage to them. Absolutely ridiculous a boat should be able to get wet if it's on the lake.

Photo of Sydney T.

Do not recommend. We were given BROKEN wakeboards, assured that they were still safe, and that led to injury. We have followed up countless times, and have come to the realization that both the manager and the owner are not going to find the respect to call back re: our terrible experience and injury. We are shocked and beyond disappointed to be treated so poorly. Have had to get X-rays and an MRI. HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU DO NOT USE THEM.

Big Bear Marina Charter Service

Founded in 1907, we have served over 1.3 million guest nights over the last 113+ years.

Travelers from near and far are drawn to Big Bear Lake, California in the name of beautiful, rugged terrain, mountain trails, lush forests and of course, a gorgeous lake to get out and explore. You don’t have to be an expert on the water to enjoy a day on Big Bear Lake. When it comes to experiencing the water up close and in style, there’s no better way than through Big Bear Marina Charter Services.

A Convenient Way to Explore

Big Bear Marina Charter Services gives guests to Big Bear Lake a customized way to get out on the water and see what’s best about this outdoor destination. Located at 500 Paine Court, Big Bear Marina Charter Service is easy to access and even easier to work with. Guest parking is readily available on-site but if you happen to be staying near the village, the marina is in walking distance as well. Whether you’re in the mood to rent a pontoon boat or are looking for a fishing charter experience, Big Bear Marina has a little something for everyone.

Alternative Options for Big Bear Boat Rentals

The Big Bear Marina is well stocked with a collection of fishing vessels that are ready to rent upon request. Big Bear Boat Rentals times range from two hours to eight hours and boats can easily accommodate four passengers. Wave runners, kayaks and paddle boards are also available to enjoy at the marina. Those looking for a more guided marina experience will want to reserve a spot on the Big Bear Queen which has been fascinating guests with lake tours since 1965. Tours run May through October weather permitting. The cost of an adult ticket is $22 while children between the ages of 3 and 12 can ride for $15.

Taking A Charter

Vessels and charters are available on a rental basis between one and eight hours depending on the type of excursion you’re looking for. Small pontoons with enough room for six passengers cost anywhere from $80 to $290 depending on the rental timeframe while large pontoons that can accommodate up to 12 passengers range from $116 to $360. Those looking to upgrade their experience can request a luxury pontoon that comes with a radio as well. Just make sure to dress in layers during the cooler months (the temperature can drop fairly quickly out on the waters), and use plenty of sunscreen to ensure there are no sun burns to nurse and cast a cloud over the trip.

For a charter you’ll be hard pressed to find a better option as you’ll be heading out on the lake within a deluxe 22-foot pontoon boat with seating for up to 8 guests. You’ll find yourself riding in style with leather interior, fishing rod holders, deluxe fishing seats, and a Bimini top for shade. To make matters even better, all charters are private ensuring that you and your guests can enjoy some privacy as you have your own private adventure. Further, the only thing you’ll need to bring with you is a fishing license, which of course can be purchased at various shops throughout the area. You’ll find that your charter comes with the latest in fish finding and catching technology. The company even claims that their equipment is so advanced you might see the fish on the sonar before it even bites the line! Of course, you won’t just be getting a ride and equipment, but you’ll also get an experienced and knowledgeable captain who is more then happy to show you a thing or to in order to ensure you have the best chances at catching a prize-winning trout.

Upon catching your fish get right back to the chase as your captain happily prepares and ices your catch. However, should you so decide one can also do catch and release, it’s entirely up to you. However, no matter which one of these you go with you’ll still have an ice chest available for you to keep your cold drinks, and of course your catches, nice and cold. Further, upon finishing your exploration of the lake and your fishing adventure, before you leave make sure to check with your captain as they have several fish recipes for you to cook up your catch. Thus, allowing you to create a feast for your entire group and family to enjoy, and which is sure to be the perfect way for you to end your day!

Sailing Season Underway With Mayhem Regatta May 25-26.

After Saturday’s excitement under very windy conditions, it ended up a bit dull on the water Sunday. Very light wind made keeping the boat moving somehow the first priority. That included, at least for myself, very subtle movements and, if I would have had a crew, we would also be very quietly conversing so as not to scare the little wind away. Funny how that works.

Nice tactics by Tom Bain on the drag race to take line honors. Ended up a photo-finish with Tom’s nose just a bit ahead.

Delicious food at the social afterwards.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

big bear yacht club

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
