Motor Yacht A: Everything You Want To Know

Ian Fortey

Motor Yacht A, sometimes just called MYA or simply “A”, is a superyacht that was designed by Philippe Starck, interior designer and architect, along with naval architect Martin Francis and built by the yacht makers Blohm Voss. The yacht was ordered back in 2004 and it took four years to come through with delivery of the massive vessel. It is famous today for being one of the biggest yachts on earth and also for the controversial look and design of the yacht.

What Did Motor Yacht A Cost?

a (motor yacht)

Although most owners of these massive superyachts play numbers close to the chest, the number most frequently circulated when discussing Motor Yacht A is $300 million. So not only would that make the boat one of the largest in the world , it’s also in the rankings for one of the most expensive as well.

The actual price has never been confirmed, however, so it’s worth noting that this might not be correct, it’s just that the owner never stated otherwise. There have sometimes been other figures tossed around that are a little higher or a little lower but no one seems to have a source for any of them. Even the widely accepted $300 million seems to mostly be speculation based on educated guesses and a bit of insight into how the ship was designed and what it features. In any event, it’s safe to say it was quite an expensive vessel.

Motor Yacht A Interior

According to Starck, he was not really given a brief for the design of the yacht. Instead, he was told how long it needed to be, more or less, and that the buyer wanted six cabins. Everything else was up to him. Some initial stories said Starck designed the entire vessel in just a couple of minutes. That sounds impossible but also that’s what Stark is known for – producing fully realized designs in just minutes, sort of like a freeform design process where he puts everything on the paper right away. However, he later admitted the entire process was about a month long, so take from that what you will.

The yacht is 394 feet long so clearly there’s a lot more than just six cabins on board.  The interior covers a massive 24,000 square feet of space. It takes a staff of 35 to keep it all running. The master suite alone is 2,500 square feet. To give that perspective, the average square footage of an apartment in New York City is 866 square feet, and it’s been that size since the year 2000.

a (motor yacht)

Starck designed a secret room for the suite as well, hidden behind a mirror. It’s meant for couples to have some privacy, if you follow our meaning. Mirrors and crystals are used everywhere on board, even in the furniture. There’s a hidden cabinet in the living room area that opens up to reveal a massive bar that is nearly all crystal, mirrors and glass.  There are seven guest cabins but there is a modular wall system that allows for them to be merged into four larger rooms.

Where mirrors aren’t being used you can find animal skins. One guest room has walls made entirely from white stingray leather.  There’s even a custom designed chair somewhere made from alligator hide and kudu horns.

a (motor yacht)

Electronics are included stealthily, like the 60 inch TV that can rise up into the ceiling to be hidden away when not in use.

Even simple features are more elaborate than you might expect. The walls lining a staircase are made of scalloped silver. The handrail is hand carved and cost $60,000. The shower faucets were custom designed to fit the silver trim and even patented. They cost $40,000.

Like many of the large superyachts, the deck is outfitted with a helipad for transport to and from the yacht at sea. There are also three swimming pools in total including one that has a glass bottom and was built above a disco so you can dance and watch people swim, or vice versa, though the glass bottom is only over a fairly small area so you’d most likely just be looking up at someone treading water. That pool is also a massage pool with his and hers massage chairs.

a (motor yacht)

The tender garage on Motor Yacht A features three launch boats and a lot of open space. So much space, in fact, that if the launch boats are cleared out, the space doubles as a party room with a large dance floor.

Most Russian billionaires opt for some serious yacht security and things were no different with Motor Yacht A. Though many of the details were kept under wraps it was rumored that the yacht had been outfitted with 44 mm bomb-proof glass on all the windows. There’s also supposedly an escape pod of some type that can be used to flee the yacht in case of emergencies but details on what that means are pretty hard to come by. In addition to that there are rumored to be dozens of security cameras, motion centers and fingerprint keypads to enter secure spaces.

How Fast is Motor Yacht A?

The ship runs on a pair of MAN RK280 diesel engines. These supply around 9,000 kW (12,000 hp). The top speed is around 23 knots with a cruising speed of 19 knots. With a 750,000 L/200,000 gallon fuel capacity, Super Yacht A has a range of 6,500 nautical miles.

Who Owns Motor Yacht A?

a (motor yacht)

At the time the yacht was commissioned back in 2004, no one knew who the buyer was. In fact, it took the entire four year construction process before it became public knowledge who owned the vessel, this after much incorrect speculation.

The true owner of the yacht was Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko. He made his fortune in coal and chemicals and was one of the richest people in Russia at the time.

Why is it Called Motor Yacht A?

Most boats have creative names. The naming of any vessel is part of the fun, after all. Even serious vessels like military ships and cargo vessels have names, so why would a billionaire give a luxurious superyacht such a plain, boring name? It’s actually a bit of a sneaky, vanity thing. It’s called “A” so that it always features at the top of boat registries. No matter where it’s listed, it’s going to be first.

What was the Controversy Over the Luxury Yacht A?

As mentioned in the intro, there was some controversy regarding the look of the yacht when it made its debut, at least in boating and yacht circles. Nothing serious, of course, just among traditionalists and more avant garde boat fans who disagreed about the design.

There were some boating journalists and yacht owners who thought A was the ugliest boat they had ever seen, in particular because of the axe bow. And it’s true that the exterior design is very unusual for a yacht. It has lines more reminiscent of a submarine that has surfaced as opposed to a traditional yacht. That, combined with the price tag, made critics feel like it was a massive waste or misuse of money. Other people, however, were excited by such an unusual design and innovative engineering shaking up what was otherwise kind of a stagnant design field. Plus, when the unique interior was factored in, it really makes A a standout vessel.

What is Sailing Yacht A?

a (motor yacht)

Launched in 2015, Sailing Yacht A is the sister yacht to Motor Yacht A. It is also owned by Andrey Melnichenko and it was also designed by Philippe Starck. At 469 feet, it is larger than Motor Yacht A and it’s also the largest sailing yacht in the world.

The Bottom Line

Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko commissioned the A back in 2004 and took possession in 2008. As far as anyone knows, it cost about $300 million. The vessel has an incredibly unique exterior design as well as many luxurious interior features that make it a standout mega yacht. At around 390 to 394 feet (sources differ on the exact length) it’s also one of the largest yachts in the world and currently ranks at about the 29th largest as of 2022.

A Closer Look at the $323 Million Motor Yacht A

One of the largest and most expensive yachts in the world has a very plain name. Motor Yacht A, often referred to as  Superyacht A and not to be confused with his other ship, Sailing yacht A, is very far from being plain or ordinary. It’s valued at $323 million and it stands out from the rest with a unique design that makes the vessel look much like a submarine at first glance. To fully appreciate the splendor of this craft, we need to take a closer look at its construction along with the multiple amenities that are built into this amazing floating luxury palace .

The commission of Motor Yacht A

Motor Yacht A was ordered by billionaire entrepreneur Andrey Melnichenko and his wife, in November of 2004. The vessel was built by the Blohm and Voss Shipyard in Kiel. It took four years for the design, construction, and testing and Motor Yacht A was delivered to its owners in 2008. This luxury motor yacht is the design of Philippe Starck with naval architect Martin Francis with a length of 390 feet of pure luxury. Upon completion, this yacht was listed as the sixth largest in its class in the world, but has since been replaced with larger vessels, but she does land within the top ten largest currently. The design team must be credited for the creation of one of the most unique looking craft on the seas as it has the appearance of a stealth warship and has frequently been compared to a submarine. Upon order and prior to the official naming of the ship, it was referred to as Project Sigma and given hull number 970 as this was the number of yachts built by Voss and Bloom at the time of starting. She is a wonder in naval architecture.

Specifications

Motor Yacht A was christened with this name so it would be the first to appear on ship registries . ItRK280 is powered with 2 MAN RK280 diesel engines which provides a top speed of 23 knots, which is the equivalent of 26 mph, with a cruising speed of 19 knots, with a displacement of 5,500 ton. The range of the ship when fully fueled is 6,500 nautical miles thanks to the fuel tanks which hold 750,000 liters of diesel. The design is original so there is not another superyacht quite like Motor Yacht A. The length is 390 feet and it was constructed as a luxury liner to afford the ultimate in spaciousness and luxury with more than 24,000 square feet of interior space with a master bedroom of 2,500 square feet. The interior features six guest suites aboard with moving walls for easy conversion into four larger staterooms so the space can be altered to suit the needs of the owners upon each trip. The ship is rated for a capacity of 14 guests along with cabins for up to 35 crew members for the daily maintenance and operation of the craft. It’s been reported that the standard crew for this ship is 35. A helicopter hangar and pad are also built in as well as 4 garages to house the tenders including a 20-foot speed boat which is maintained in the hull of the ship. There are 6 guest cabins in addition to the master suite and 27 cabins for the crew.

This yacht is one of the most unique and luxurious starting with its interesting exterior design. The stealthy appearance draws the eyes of onlookers as it stands out from most other ships with a one of a kind appearance, but when you get to the interior, it’s the ultimate in posh luxury . We learned that there are three swimming pools, one with a glass bottom, a disco for night entertainment and dancing, and many of the surfaces throughout the interior are mirrored. French crystal glassware and tableware and premium furnishings were used to enhance the opulence of the yachting experience. There is also a secret room built in behind mirrored panels. We also learned that Baccarat crystal has been used for not only the glassware but also in the furniture and the tableware. A special bomb-proof glass measuring 44mm in thickness is used for the window and the ship is wired with a CCTV camera system with motion sensors, 40 cameras, and restricted areas requiring a biometric fingerprint keypad entry with an escape pod should an emergency arise. There is also a submarine as well as one garage for 2 small tenders/boats.

Final thoughts

Motor Yacht A definitely comes in as the winner for a unique exterior design because there’s not another yacht like it on the seas. The owner who commissioned the ship wanted to ensure that it was in a class of its own and that it appeared first even in ship registries. This yacht is not available for charter so there are only two ways to gain access. The first is by invitation only and the second, to get hired on as a member of the 35 man crew who keeps the ship maintained and fully operational. Life aboard this ship is nothing short of pure luxury. We’ve even heard rumors that there are several Monet paintings adorning the walls of the interior. It is one of the most spacious and opulent vessels traversing the seas and it’s been known to appear in ports from San Francisco to Antigua and beyond. The Melnichenco family are certainly getting plenty of downtime aboard their prized superyacht and it’s a treat for onlookers to behold. This is how the very rich spend their off days, weeks or months and we applaud the self-made billionaire in his success and good fortune.

“Zephyr represents a harmonious balance of bold creativity and enduring style, making it a standout in any era,” Dörries Yachts CEO Henning Dörries told Robb Report via email.

“The final design is not only stunning but also boasts a timeless appeal with modern surfacing and meticulous detailing,” added H2 owner Jonny Horsfield. “Featuring expansive glass and spacious outdoor decks, Zephyr epitomizes the contemporary preferences of today’s discerning clientele.”

The interior is sure to be gargantuan, though Dörries has yet to specify the gross tonnage. The German shipyard also didn’t share any details regarding the layout of the living quarters, but pictures of the exterior show that Zephyr will certainly not be short on luxury amenities.

Zephyr Megayacht

Starting at the top, the sundeck is adorned with a plunge pool and sun pads forward and a large circular lounge aft. Alfresco dining areas big enough for 12 and more plush lounges grace the next two decks, while an inviting Jacuzzi occupies pride of place in the bow. The bow is so long it can also accommodate a helicopter that can be used for comings and goings. The owner’s suite will likely have private access to the bow area, as is customary with many high-end cruisers.

Dörries Yachts has unveiled some pretty extraordinary megayachts and explorers over the past few years, but Zephyr is perhaps one of the most divine designs. The best part? The megyacht is up for sale. More details will be announced at the Monaco Yacht Show in late September, with a full sales brochure also available to interested buyers.

Two people hurt, sailboat sunk after Hingham boat crash

By Tammy Mutasa

August 16, 2024 / 11:19 PM EDT / CBS Boston

HINGHAM - Two people were seriously hurt and rushed to hospitals, after a dramatic boat crash in Hingham Bay, Hingham, first responders said.

Sailboat sunk in crash

A sailboat sank into the water after, investigators said, a speedboat crashed into it, leaving two people hurt.

The crash rocked lifelong boaters like Bill Norton, who could see the mast of the sailboat ominously sticking up from his house across the bay.

"I was hoping nobody got hurt. You can replace a boat, but the people getting hurt - that's a different story," said Norton. "Sailboat has the right of way over a powerboat, every time."

'Not a common occurrence'

Water Taxi Captain Ray Suarez saw the aftermath as he went back and forth shuttling passengers all day. He's been on the water most of his life and said  the site was unusual.

"We saw the mast just sticking out of the water. There was a lot of state police and salvage boats trying to figure out what to do with it," said Captain Suarez. "Sailboats generally go very slow, and powerboats generally go very fast. So, somebody obviously wasn't paying attention because they hit the boat so hard that they sank it, and that's not a common occurrence."

Hingham and Weymouth first responders, and Massachusetts Environmental Police rushed to the rescue after the boat crash. First responders say a towboat will work to recover the submerged sailboat because it's a danger to other boats navigating the bay.

"Make sure you have life preservers for everyone on board, you go at a safe pace, so you stay safe and you keep the people around you safe as well," said Captain Suarez.

The Massachusetts Environmental Police are investigating the incident.
