Say what you will about the Ohio River, but we are pretty fortunate to have it as a border to the city we call home. If you're a boater and you want to get out and enjoy a nice summer day on the river, it's right there, and there are plenty of places along it where you can drop your boat in and go without having to drive a long distance. Plus, it makes a great backdrop for hosting events like the annual fireworks, Shrinersfest, or any of the other numerous events that take place along the Evansville riverfront over the course of the year. It also provides us opportunities to experience things we wouldn't have the chance to if it weren't there. For example, the recent announcement from Explore Evansville that the American Heritage riverboat will be returning to town to offer more cruises for the next couple of months.

American Heritage Riverboat Announces Return to Evansville

This isn't the first time the American Heritage has come through town. It made a few stops last August as well. As was the case with those stops, local residents will not be able to take a ride on the boat as it's stops in Evansville will be part of an ongoing cruise. But, the city's tourism bureau, Explore Evansville (formerly Visit Evansville), and American Cruises, who operates the riverboat, is inviting residents to stop by and see the boat when it docks at Marina Pointe on the following dates:

Passengers on the boat will visit area attractions, including the Evansville Wartime Museum, Audubon Museum & Nature Center, Wesselman Woods, and others while they're in town.

Inland Marina in Evansville, Ind., is the former home of LST-325. Tourism officials hope to renovate it so that Evansville can become a port of call for visiting river cruise ships. (Photo courtesy of Visit Evansville)

Evansville Officials Hope To Attract River Cruises With Former LST Dock

Evansville, Ind., tourism officials want to rehabilitate the former dock for a World War II amphibious vessel and use it to attract riverboat cruises.

Inland Marina was the home of LST-325 until the ship relocated alongside a new museum in a downtown area adjacent to a riverfront park in June 2020. That move was made possible when the Tropicana Casino moved from a riverboat to a land-based operation in October 2017. LST-325 is now located where the casino boat had been moored from 1995 to 2017.

On April 28, the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Convention and Visitors Commission board voted to request that the Vanderburgh County Council permit $60,000 of the money raised from hotel room taxes be used to cover maintenance work and other expenses at the former LST-325 dock at Inland Marina, as well as to create fresh promotional materials to show cruise lines.

While the meeting to discuss the proposal will be June 1, Alexis Berggren, president and CEO of Visit Evansville, mentioned the need during a quarterly budget update to the council on May 4.

‘We are working very hard to bring riverboats back to our shores,” she said. “We are actively engaged with the three riverboat companies that are currently sailing the Ohio, and all three are very, very interested in Evansville as a potential port of call.”

Those companies are American Queen Voyages, American Cruise Lines and BB Riverboats, although Berggren said discussions are furthest along with American Cruise Lines.

“We’re also going after Viking River Cruises,” she told the board. “They are not currently sailing the Ohio, but they are building 22 new boats, so we don’t see why they can’t.”

Berggren said Visit Evansville is working closely with the city of Evansville, which owns Inland Marina, and the marina managers to make the dock viable again.

“And like I said, there is a lot of interest,” she told the board.

She added, “We need to do not only some work to that area itself, but we’re also in the process of developing excursion ideas for these boats so that once the guests get off we can take them to our attractions, take them to our retailers and restaurants, things like that. There’s a lot of work to be done, but I think it’s very doable, and I think there is a lot of excitement surrounding that.”

While no cruise lines currently visit Evansville as a port of call, some do stop at Henderson, Ky., across the river.

Work on the dock is not expensive but includes several “deferred maintenance” items not attended to during the COVID-19 pandemic, she said.

That includes replacing ballasts, pumping out some tanks, greasing hinges and applying fresh paint, along with some minor electrical work, she said.

“It just needs a little TLC,” Berggren said. “It’s still a great asset.”

There will be a need for ongoing funds for maintenance once it is in use, however, she added.

Positive attributes of the site include that it has already been permitted by the Corps of Engineers as a docking space when LST-325 used it and that it already has adequate parking facilities, a gangway and a bar and restaurant on-site.

“It’s really just an untapped treasure, I feel, at this point,” she said.

Berggren stressed to the county board that the tourism industry is in an “intense time of evolution” due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The tastes and interests of travelers have changed dramatically, and destinations just like ours are fighting fiercely to attract them,” she said.

While cruise lines often determine their ports of call two to three years in advance, Berggren said some companies, including BB Riverboats, might have the ability to come in earlier than that to provide daytime or evening river cruises.

“We’re developing our packages, looking at what our marketing efforts are going to look like, looking at our excursion opportunities, talking to our downtown retailers,” Berggren said. “We’ve just been met with nothing but excitement and enthusiasm.”

Cruise ships in Evansville dock at Inland Marina. On the waterfront and to the north are two of the city's unique tourist attractions - the LST Dock (where is permanently moored USS LST-325 /a 1943-built landing ship tank, now serving as a WW2-themed museum) and Bally's Evansville (Hotel & Casino).

Indiana's first casino Bally's Evansville (1995-opened) was originally functioning on a riverboat (City of Evansville). The casino boat was an exact replica of the 1866-built Robert E. Lee (paddlewheel/sidewheel steamboat). In 2013, the casino boat (length 94 m / 310 ft, width 21 m / 70 ft, total public space 47863 ft2 / 4447 m2) was renamed Tropicana Evansville. Since 2018, Bally's Evansville is land-based (hotel and casino) property and owned by GLP-Gaming and Leisure Properties Inc.

Evansville Airport serves 30+ regularly scheduled domestic flights linking to Sanford/Orlando FL (by Allegiant Air), Charlotte NC and Dallas TX (by American Airlines/American Eagle), Atlanta GA (by Delta Air Lines and Delta Connection), and Chicago IL (American Airlines and Delta Air). Cargo flights (by FedEx Express) link to Memphis TN .

Four major railways serve Evansville's freight rail shipping - CSX, Evansville Western, Indiana Southwestern, and Norfolk Southern. The cargo trains are sorted at Howell Yard, which facilities have monthly capacity to handle ~3000 containers and trailers.

The current-day city's economy is largely based on trade, being Evansville Metro's principal city and serving a large tri-state (Illinois-Indiana-Kentucky) area that groups 30 counties (10x in Illinois, 11x in Indiana, 9x in Kentucky) and has combined population 0,9+ million. Evansville's major industries include healthcare/medical sciences (Deaconess Health System, Ascension St Vincent Evansville, hospitals), banking/finances, higher education (Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, Indiana Ivy Tech Community College, Evansville University, Southern Indiana University), manufacturing, logistics/transportation, energy-related businesses, retail shopping.

In Evansville are headquartered large corporations like Escalade Inc (sporting goods), Old National Bank, OneMain Holdings (finance), Berry Global (plastic packaging products), Shoe Carnival (footwear), AmeriQual Group (food processing/production-packaging-assembly-distribution), Accuride (commercial vehicle components), Atlas World Group (moving and storage), Anchor Industries (ship anchors and mooring equipment), Evana Tool & Engineering (industrial machinery), Traylor Bros Inc (heavy construction), Koch Enterprises (heavy equipment), Lewis Bakeries (bakery foods), MetroNet (internet, TV, voice services), Red Spot Paint & Varnish (coatings for plastics), Karges Furniture.

The tourism industry benefits from several large museums (Children's, African American, Wartime, Reitz Home, Arts, History & Science), Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden (1928-opened). Angel Mounds State Historic Park (located approx 8 mi / 13 km southeast of the city), Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve (200 acres / 81 hectares of virgin forest), Wesselman Park (golf course, outdoor sports courts, playground), large-capacity sports facilities (Ford Center, Bosse Field, Double Cola Soccer Complex, Goebel Soccer Complex, Swonder Ice Arena), annual festivals and street fairs (West Side Nut Club Fall, Germania Mannerchor Volksfest).

Riverboats might be a term that reminds you of the south, but Indiana actually has its fair share of historic riverboats that you can still climb aboard. One incredible riverboat you've likely never heard of is a true Indiana treasure - and you'll want to book a cruise this summer.

alt

The Dixie Sternwheeler is Indiana's oldest sternwheel riverboat. Located along Webster Lake, this classic riverboat still offers Hoosiers unforgettable rides around the lake.

alt

In fact, the Dixie is such an important piece of Indiana's history that is has been claimed as a National Historic Place.

alt

A sternwheel riverboat is a boat that is propelled by a single paddle wheel, located on the stern (hence the name).

alt

This incredible riverboat offers two levels of seating, so passengers can decide on the view they'd like. Sit up above for a wide landscape view of the water...

alt

...or down below for a slightly more enclosed view.

This Indiana Hotel Is Among The Most Haunted Places In The Nation

French Lick Springs Hotel in Indiana is renowned for its historic charm and paranormal activity.

Indiana is full of historical sites - and with history comes rumors and legends, particularly of paranormal activity. The Hoosier state has its fair share of believed haunted buildings and land, but there's an Indiana hotel that easily takes the cake as not only one of the most haunted places in Indiana but one of the most haunted places in the country. Is the French Lick Resort haunted ? Maybe... but we'll let you decide.

Nestled in the small resort town of French Lick sits the massive French Lick Springs Hotel. Constructed in 1845, this legendary hotel is the crown jewel of this southern Indiana town.

alt

The French Lick Springs Hotel manages to mix history with modern elegance, keeping the vision for this resort suite the same as it was when Thomas Taggart first opened the hotel's doors.

But there's more to this resort than meets the eye.

alt

Taggart was the hotel's original owner in the mid-1800s and according to local legend, he's never actually left the hotel.

alt

Taggart died in 1916, but that hasn't stopped rumors of sightings of this famous hotel owner. Guests and hotel employees frequently encounter strange and paranormal activity that they believe is caused by Taggart himself.

Stories range from person to person, but there are two main places where you can expect to see signs of Taggart. Many spot him near the service elevator where they pick up a strong scent of pipe tobacco or sometimes even encounter his ghost. He's also been rumored to use the service elevator when the hotel is particularly busy.

alt

Others claim they witnessed his spirit riding down the hallway on horseback and making noise (as if throwing a party) inside of the ballroom. Some hear noises and others encounter his ghost, though usually both don't occur at the same time.

In addition to the strong belief in Taggart's ghost, there are also rumors of a former bellhop lingering around the hotel. Many believed he was a current employee until they saw old photos of him hanging on the wall or were told no bell-hops were on duty when they encountered him.

alt

It's difficult not to encounter strange, haunted stories about buildings as historic as the French Lick Springs Hotel. The vast accounts of paranormal sightings are why it's often considered the most haunted place in Indiana and one of the most haunted places in the country.

alt

You can find the French Lick Springs Hotel at 8670 IN-56, French Lick, IN, 47432.

Have you ever stayed at the French Lick Springs Hotel? If so, did you experience any weird activity at this haunted Indiana icon? What do you think -- do you agree that it's the most haunted hotel in Indiana? Share your creepy stories in the comments section!

This Is The Single Strangest Thing You Never Knew Happened In Indiana

Indiana is known for its quirky unexplained phenomena, including the Kokomo hum and UFO sightings.

What do you picture when you think of Indiana? Notre Dame? The Indianapolis 500? Indiana is definitely a quirky state , but it's a state full of unexplained phenomena as well. From the Kokomo hum to alleged UFO sightings, there's a lot of weirdness floating around the Hoosier State. However, nothing quite compares to the strangest thing to happen in one of Indiana's small towns - an event that still has no clear explanation. Have you ever heard of the Odon fires? Unlike other ghost stories in Indiana , this one hits a little closer to home.

Note that some of the images used in this article are for representational purposes only.

Odon, Indiana is a small town of approximately 1,300 residents in Daviess County.

alt

It's a quiet, relatively peaceful town where not many strange or mysterious events occur.

alt

However, one April morning in 1941, an Odon farmhouse caught fire. When the owner rushed inside, he became baffled when he noticed the fire seemed to be gushing out from the wall.

alt

This farmhouse was built before electricity was standard and without wiring in the walls, the cause of this fire was quite confusing.

Firefighters and other emergency services rushed over and quickly put out the strange fire. Unfortunately, the strange events didn't end there.

alt

A little while later, a second mysterious fire erupted from a mattress within the house and the fire department had to be called back out.

alt

This strange pattern kept occurring throughout the day. By the day's close, the firemen had extinguished 28 mysterious fires.

alt

Proposed causes included gasses from a nearby well, pranks caused by children, or magnetic fields. None of these causes could be proven or even fully accounted for what happened on this day. This mystery known as the Odon Fires was never able to be explained, and never occurred again.

Theories range from paranormal activity and angry spirits to unintentional causes to arson. But nothing has been determined.

alt

We may never know the cause of the Odon fires, but we're sure many of you have heard of them. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

If you think this bizarre small-town event has a paranormal basis, you could be right! There are countless tales of hauntings in Indiana that feel equally eerie. If that's you, you might just like our list of similar inexplicable ghost stories in Indiana. Our state is full of haunted places - and taking a ghost tour is the best way to get the inside scoop!

For $16 million, indiana’s first riverboat casino can be yours.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Indiana’s first riverboat casino is up for sale again.

New Orleans Paddlewheels Inc. has announced it is pursuing a sale of the Riverboat Louis Armstrong . That riverboat initially served as Casino Aztar’s gambling riverboat on the Ohio River in Evansville.

The boat, originally named City of Evansville, opened as Indiana’s first riverboat casino in 1995. In 2017, the casino, then operating as Tropicana Evansville, moved to land-based gambling and closed the riverboat.

The riverboat was sold to the New Orleans-based group, where it underwent renovations and opened as the city’s “most luxurious, and most unique concert and events venue on the Mississippi River.”

“In light of the recent changes to the local tourism market and hospitality industry, especially the ones that have resulted in the cancelling of future conventions in New Orleans, New Orleans Paddlewheels, Inc., has decided to pursue the potential sale of the Riverboat Louis Armstong,” company president Walter Reuther Jr. said in a statement. “Although this is somewhat unexpected, the change in circumstances arising out of the significant post-COVID changes has necessitated this path, and the sale of the vessel will permit the company to redeploy assets and personnel in other areas.”

The company is reportedly seeking $16 million for the 3,000-passenger riverboat. A Facebook video released in January 2022 features a tour of the riverboat .

We visited Evansville for an overnight trip. We're from the south, but we live in the Midwest now. When we looked at this menu, it reminded us of home with the fried fish, hush puppies and salad bar. We tried the chili and loaded baked potato soup. As you see, we couldn't decide on which one we liked more as they were both delicious, so we just mixed them both! I had the catfish, hush puppies, green beans and salad bar. My husband had the pork steak, baked potato and salad bar with a sweet tea. Everything was seasoned well! Ryan was our server and he was absolutely phenomenal and welcoming with all the suggestions. They were out of the meatloaf and bourbon slushes we wanted to try, but that's all the more reason to come back when we're back in town. Such a great restaurant and we look forward to coming when we're back in town. After we dined, we took a stroll in the river across the street to work off some of the food. Such a beautiful scenery!

Located in the Hadi Shrine building overlooking the river. They have a bar, dining room, and outdoor seating. Could tell that everyone there knew each other. We were seated quickly but had to wait for our waitress for about 10 minutes. After that she was friendly and provided great service. After we ordered drinks we ordered dinner. I got the grilled pork steak. It was delicious and the first time I have seen it on menu. My wife got the fried catfish fillet, and others the chicken fried steak with white gravy. Everyone really enjoyed their main entree. The sides were quite good, especially the collard greens. We didn't have it but the salad bar looked well stocked and fresh. A nice dining experience.

The food tasted great and was reasonably priced. I had the chicken fried steak, baked potato and green beans. My wife had the chicken salad sandwich with chips. She said it was delicious. The place was fairly busy but the service was still excellent. The place is very clean and well maintained.

The food was really good! I had the catfish fillets, mashed potatoes and gravy and hush puppies. My husband had the pork chops and French fries. He did say the pork chops were very dry but the French fries were really good. I would definitely come here again

Service was great on a slow Saturday afternoon. Had the catfish filets, they were decent enough, the breading was applied and cooked well, but lacked spice, maybe older crowd eats here? Hush puppies were on the small side and could have been larger portion (somewhat bland as well). Salad bar seemed small for the added price, skipped that. Not particularly a bad visit, but won't warrant a return.

I took my sister and her husband on a Thursday night. It was crowded, but we had great service and the food was excellent.

I ordered the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy with country fried apples. The wife had chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy and buttered corn. My daughter ordered 5piece chicken strips, buttered corn and country fried apples. Everything was fantastic. The country fried steak was freshly made and tender. The chicken was tender and juicy. Everything was absolutely delicious.

Labor Day on the Ohio: Boaters enjoy end of summer on Ohio River

E VANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Many people are taking to the Ohio River to enjoy the long holiday weekend. Local experts say this caps off what’s been a busy summer boating season.

For Ollie Page, being the owner of the Inland Marina in Evansville isn’t all fun and games.

“I gotta tend to them, help them out, try to have fun with them too,” said Page. “It’s extremely hard.”

He keeps the marina open 365 days a year and 24 hours a day.

He says it’s perfect for a hobby that can be all-consuming.

“It’s extremely addictive, I go out probably 15 times a day, in and out on my boat here and there, check on things, do this do that,” said Page.

He says a lot of people have been on the water this year.

While that’s kept him busy with both new and seasoned boaters, he says he’s been happy to see everyone wearing life jackets and following safety procedures.

They say this is a time of year when people just can’t get enough of the water.

“This is the time of the year that the river is at its prettiest, when it’s lowest, so it’s fun,” said long-time boater Yonetta Sollman. “With the sandbar recently out there that brings a lot of people in you haven’t seen for a while, so it’s kind of a reunion get-together.”

For now, people are taking advantage of the river’s signature pump out.

Those out for Labor Day say it’s been busy all holiday weekend, at times busy enough there wasn’t space for additional people to land their boats.

As the seasons begin to change, some long-time boaters say fewer people will be out on the river soon, but some of them are just getting started.

“You’re near the end of the season,” said long-time boater David Horn. “Well we don’t look at it as near the end of the season. Fall is some beautiful boating.”

The seasons may be changing, but the advice remains the same. They say always remember to wear a life jacket when you’re on the river.
