KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 27): Genting Bhd chairman Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay's 28.49%-owned Grand Banks Yachts Ltd said on Thursday (Oct 27) the yacht manufacturer's business momentum is expected to accelerate after achieving an all-time high net order book value.

The manufacturer of luxury recreational motor yachts, whose manufacturing yard is located in Pasir Gudang, Johor, reported that its net order book swelled to a record high of S$191.8 million (about RM641.7 million) at the company’s first quarter ending Sept 30, 2022 (1QFY23).

Grand Bank Yachts had accomplished a net order book value of S$182.9 million for its financial year ending June 30, 2022 (FY22) compared with S$116.9 million a year earlier (FY21) and S$48.9 million in FY20.

"Barring unforeseen circumstances, business momentum is expected to accelerate, as the group plans to increase its headcount to accelerate the production schedule," the group said in its latest corporate presentation, which was filed with the Singapore Exchange on Thursday, in conjunction with the company's annual general meeting.

Based on its financial review, the group said there were 31 new boat orders recorded in FY22 and seven new boat orders recorded in 1QFY23.

The company added in its outlook that demand for luxury yachts will remain strong as the pandemic has raised the appeal of sailing.

“The group will continue to develop bigger, sleeker yachts with greater fuel efficiency,” it said.

Notably, Grand Banks Yachts debuted the Grand Banks 85 model in March 2022, its largest yacht to date.

Nonetheless, the group warned of possible higher operating costs in the near term amid increased costs of energy and raw materials as well as rising labour costs. It is also monitoring the impact of rising interest rates on customer sentiment.

According to Grand Banks Yachts’s 2022 annual report, Lim is the largest shareholder with 52,609,994 shares as on Sept 16, 2022. The second largest shareholder is Citibank Nominees Singapore Pte Ltd, which has a 21.56% stake in the group.

The company returned to the black in 1QFY23 with a net profit of S$1.1 million, from a net loss of S$4.2 million a year ago (1QFY22). The financial turnaround was supported by higher revenue of S$22.4 million in 1QFY23, which nearly doubled from the S$11.5 million in 1QFY22.

Grand Banks Yachts had struggled with lower revenue in FY22, amounting to S$75.2 million compared with S$96.1 million in FY21, as the group only had less than 10 months of production due to the movement control orders imposed by the Malaysian government to contain the spread of Covid-19.

Thankfully, the absence of lower-margin trade-in boat orders lifted the group’s gross profit margin to 26.6% in FY2022 from 21.5% a year ago, it said. Grand Banks Yachts recorded a net profit of S$4 million in FY22 compared with S$4.2 million in FY21.

A SYNERGY OF MAN AND MACHINE

At Grand Banks, we eschew third-party componentry wherever possible as we prefer to do most of our manufacturing in-house.

To achieve such total control over our product has required us to develop one of the largest production facilities in our region.

We’re based in Malaysia where over 650 full time staff are working in 51,000 square meters of covered shop floor. (We have another 12,000 square meters ready for expansion.)

This working environment has been carefully designed to allow cutting edge technology to operate hand-in-hand with traditional craftsmanship in partnership with a 24-man design team.

This close working relationship is essential given the ongoing role that innovation plays in the development of our yachts.

INDUSTRIAL ERGONOMICS

The efficiency of our workflow has proven to be a major factor in the success of our operation. Over the last five years, the factory has been modernized and its facilities re-arranged to ensure the most ergonomic passage of each Grand Banks through every stage of construction and testing. The boats snake through the factory as they visit one specialist area after another.

The beauty of this organizational model is that everything is in the right place at the right time and quality control inspections are being conducted throughout the entire process of the build.

Similarly, the benefit of making everything in-house is that we control both standards and availability. For example, we actually create the material that our CNC machines then cut to fabricate the interior panels of our boats as and when it is required. It’s a seamless process.

TIME SAVING TECHNOLOGY

As part of our modernization program, robotics is playing an increasingly significant roll. But not perhaps in the way you might imagine. The German-made robots at our factory operate at higher degrees of accuracy than you’d find in most automotive plants.

But we don’t employ them directly in the manufacture of our boats. We use them in new product development.

Their precise sculpting of complex shapes combined with their 24-hour working day makes them extremely effective in creating new moulds and plugs and dramatically shortens the time from concept to construction.

Testing is the key to perfection. That’s why we do it so many times.

TESTING 1, 2, 3. (AND 4 IF NECESSARY!)

The vast roof of our facility allows us to conduct all testing under cover. Every boat goes through multiple stages of this process.

Once the deck and superstructure have been fused to the hull with the engines and electrics installed, the boat is gently lowered into the pool and all systems given an extensive trial run.

The boat is then removed for completion of the fit and finish before being returned to the pool for exhaustive testing in preparation for being commissioned and transferred to open water.

Grand Banks Yachts is a luxury yacht manufacturing company based out of Malaysia, and listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange as Grand Banks Yachts Ltd. ( GBY:SP ) [1]

Grand Banks Yachts began as American Marine [2] , established by Robert J. Newton and his two sons John and Whit Newton. They are regarded as influential in making recreational trawler -style yachts iconic [3] . In 2014 Grand Banks Yachts acquired a 100% ownership stake in Australian luxury yacht builders Palm Beach Motor Yachts, acquiring its CEO Mark Richards , skipper of 8 times line honours Sydney to Hobart winning SuperMaxi Wild Oats XI , to run the enlarged company group [4] .

The original shipyard in 1956 was located on a small section of waterfront [5] in Kowloon, Hong Kong. Hong Kong was at that time a British Colony . Their first boat was launched in 1957 after 6 months of building, and Robert's other son Whit joined his brother and father, and they established American Marine Ltd building heavy sailboats and large motor-yachts for some of the world's top marine architects including Sparkman & Stephens , William Garden , Nat Herreshoff , Ray Hunt and others [6] [7] .  

In 1962, American Marine commissioned their own design through naval architect Ken Smith [8] , a 36 foot trawler named Spray that would lead into the future design of the Grand Banks 36 [9] . Within 1 year of launching Spray, American Marine ceased custom building to focus on their new 8-knot wooden cruiser, and over the next few years expanded the Grand Banks fleet to include the GB32, GB42, GB48, GB50, GB57 and GB62. The shipyard moved from Singapore in 1995 [10] and now trades out of a factory in Johor Bahru [11] , Malaysia with corporate offices in Singapore.

Upon its acquisition of Palm Beach and appointment of new CEO Mark Richards , the shipyard in Pasir Gudang, Johor Bahru , underwent substantial refitting and development and Grand Banks moved from its previous dealership sales distribution network to a factory direct sales model [12] . The company ceased production of its line of legacy models to focus on developing more efficient and modern designs using new technology and production methods utilising carbon fiber , resin infusion and multi-axis CNC . Grand Banks is due to unveil its new flagship Grand Banks 60 in 2017 to commemorate the company's 60th anniversary.
