Embark on a Marine Wildlife Adventure

Shearwater II the Marine Discovery Penzance sailing catamaran

Join us on our sailing catamaran, Shearwater II, for a unique marine wildlife watching adventure. The diversity of the wildlife found in West Cornwall is what makes it special. Trips could encounter grey seals, various seabirds, or different species of dolphins and porpoises, enigmatic ocean sunfish or even giants such as minke whales, humpback whales, basking sharks and leatherback turtles!

Sailing gives you the most special encounter possible, the quiet meaning you can hear the splashes of the gannets as they dive and the whistles of the dolphins as they bowride alongside us check out our videos to see for yourself. Be assured also that you have chosen the most environmentally responsible option.

Part of what makes Marine Discovery exceptional is that we use our trips to collect scientific data. No other tour company in the country does this to the same extent and it is an incredibly important part of our job. Duncan, Hannah and their small team are completely dedicated to giving the best experience possible and are looking forward to welcoming you to Marine Discovery – In 2013 Marine Discovery won the Responsible Whale and Dolphin Watch Operator of the year.

Before you sail on your adventure

Our sailing catamaran, ocean classroom, different wildlife, what people are saying about marine discovery ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.

A fantastic 4 hour trip we both massively enjoyed. We went on the Ocean Discovery trip and saw a great amount of Dolphins, Sea Birds and Seals, as well as the incredible sight of the Cornish coast. If you care about wildlife and the environment, this is most certainly the trip for you as they let the wildlife come to you (which the Dolphins did in abundance for us), instead of motoring into the feeding grounds, disrupting the wildlife, like some other operators. The boat itself is really comfy, with plenty of places to sit and enjoy whats going on around you!

Definitely recommend the 3 hour tour (we would opt for 4 hours next). Hannah and Duncan were very knowledgeable, not only of the local sea-life (above and below) but also coastal landmarks. They were extremely careful to not disturb feeding cetaceans, remaining at a distance for them to break away and visit us. This was in stark contrast to a tourist tripper boat that ploughed straight into their feeding area. Would definitely recommend a tour with these guys.

This afternoon we had a 4 hour trip on Marine Discovery, and were so lucky to see firstly , common dolphin, at a small distance, and then a little later a big pod of Bottle nosed Dolphins. Duncan said it was unusual to see both of these at this time of year. He is very knowledgable and gave us facts and figures of dolphin swim speeds, and bird flight speeds as well as much more interesting information. Such a lovely trip, and all done according to marine conservation code. A really lovely afternoon. Thank you Duncan & Rebecca

Had the most brilliant 3 hour trip with Marine Discovery Penzance - been coming to Cornwall for years but only just stumbled upon the company. Cannot recommend the experience enough - the weather was perfect, the boat is lovely, Duncan and Sara couldn’t have made us feel more welcome (and had so much knowledge to share) AND we got to see seals and dolphins. We felt very lucky to have seen them. We went on board knowing that animal sightings can’t be guaranteed so this was a real highlight. Even if we hadn’t seen much wildlife, the boat ride and the sights would have still been great. Thanks again to Duncan and Sara

We took the 3hr trip in the morning and it was absolutely wonderful! The catamaran was very comfortable with room to move around if need be. It was quiet and peaceful, making it all the more enjoyable for everyone (including the wildlife). We were lucky enough to spot some Risso’s dolphin and grey seals. The guides were super knowledgeable about the area and animals and were constantly on the look out for signs of interesting wildlife. Couldn’t recommend this trip enough and we can’t wait to come back, I just wish I could give more than 5 stars!

Set on the very south-western tip of Britain, Cornwall is an iconic destination, luring visitors from across the globe year on year. Completely surrounded by water, her coastline is intrinsically linked with her rich history, tales of piracy, trade and smuggling intertwining themselves with the breathatkingly beautiful cliffs, hidden coves and sweeping golden sandy bays. She is a land of rugged moorlands and quaint harbours, where tourist towns perch above dramatic cliffs and abandoned engine houses dot the landscape. This beautiful coastline offers plentiful sailing opportunities so take to the water and uncover Cornwall from a whole new perspective!

VentureSail is based in Cornwall and many of our ships call these waters home, touring the stunning coastline and making trips across to the incredible Isles of Scilly during the summer months. Set sail from Fowey and explore some of Poldark’s filming locations, explore picturesque harbour Charlestown, head to Falmouth to sail across the third deepest natural harbour in the world and hunker down in the secluded Helford for the night, you might even have dolphins for company! Wherever your venture takes you, sailing holidays in Cornwall are a firm favourite for many of our guests and skippers, it is easy to see why.

Learning the ropes is a great challenge for sea-dogs and novice sailors alike and sailing in Cornwall provides the perfect opportunity to get to grips with some of the basics or hone existing skills. With a constant breeze and variety of sailing waters at their fingertips, our skippers and crew are able to impart their knowledge, encouraging guests to even take the helm and lead the way.

The exact itinerary for every sailing holiday in Cornwall is subject to wind and tides however it is likely that we will visit one of the many picturesque Cornish harbours where you can step ashore to sample freshly baked pasties and delicious clotted cream ice cream whilst soaking up the hustle and the bustle of a busy Cornish summer. Away from the crowds, your skipper will endeavour to take you off the beaten track, allowing guests to walk some of the South West Coast Path and discover some hidden gems far from prying eyes, where wildlife abounds.

Sheltered Cornish coves and Starlit Nights

Perhaps one of the best parts of staying on a classic ship in Cornwall are the still evenings, where peaceful little coves and rivers become an astronomer’s dream – Cornwall is home to several dark skies sites and the star-gazing here is beautiful. Lying back on the gently rocking deck, away from light pollution, the star-studded sky seems infinite and those patient viewers may observe comets, shooting stars, and the silvery moon. You’ll be swept away by the romance of Cornwall, which has long inspired authors, and its stark contrast to modern life.

Home Comforts

In recent years Cornwall has made its mark on the food and drink scene with the county now boasting some of the best produce in the country and after a busy day at sea, food forms an important part of life! With fresh-off-the-boat seafood, fantastic fruit and veg, a range of local meats plus the fabulous variety of Cornish spirits and wines to accompany, there’s plenty to whet the appetite. Explore quirky cafes, popular restaurants and local bakeries whilst ashore before returning to your vessel for a superlative Cornish dining experience made using the finest local produce.

Hop over to the Isles of Scilly

Many of our Cornish boats make the crossing over to the Isles of Scilly from Cornwall, departing from either Falmouth or Penzance. This is by far one of the best ways to visit these island gems just 28miles off the coast of Cornwall.  Read more about sailing in the Isles of Scilly here

Sailing Holidays Cornwall

Classic Sailing offers hands on sailing adventures on traditional boats and tall ships all over the world, but our heart is in Cornwall.  Our office is in Portscatho and our home port is the sailors paradise of St Mawes.

Pilot cutter ‘Eve of St Mawes’ was our first charter boat and for 20 years she explored every cove and creek in Cornwall and the Scillies. She has been replaced by her bigger sister ‘Tallulah’ who carries on the company ethos of adventure afloat and exploring ashore by rowing boat. In addition to our St Mawes based pilot cutter we now have a growing fleet of beautiful boats that are based in Cornwall for you to enjoy. Cornwall has many picturesque anchorages, fishing villages and tree lined creeks to visit and plenty of sea room in deep waters without strong tides.

sailing in Cornwall.

Why is Cornwall Great for Sailing?

North Cornwall offers you the crashing waves, old mine chimneys and rugged scenery straight out of the Poldark TV series. Ideal for surfers but an unfriendly shore for sailing ships. In contrast South Cornwall is just about perfect for sailors.  The Isles of Scilly are a granite archipelago off Lands End are a more advanced sailing playground to navigate but a holiday destination that is out of this world.

The granite cliffs of West Penwith protect Mounts Bay from the North West and the Lizard Peninsula cuts down some of the ocean swell and creates a varied sailing ground to explore around Falmouth Bay. Small fishing villages nestle in every sheltered bay or river from Cadgwith to Cawsand and there are plenty of anchorages where you can be the only boat.

Cornwall is windy, one of the sunniest regions of Britain, un polluted, the seas are unbelievably blue. There are plenty of headlands to aim for, creeks to navigate, picturesque ports small stone quaysides to discover.

There is a long tradition of boat building, seafaring, fishing and world exploration from Cornish shores. World renowned chefs have made their home here and we can row to some great waterside pubs without a streetlight in sight.

Isles of Scilly – Wildlife and Sub Tropical Flora

Located 35 miles from Lands End are the Isles of Scilly. Part of Cornwall but totally unique, this archipelago of granite reefs, white sand beaches offers a challenging but rewarding sailing ground. The islands of Tresco, St Agnes, Bryher, St Marys and St Martin all have their charm and there are awesome anchorages off uninhabited islands too. The seas are crystal clear as there are no rivers in the Scillies so it is great for snorkelling. The wide range of habitats from moorland, woodland, dunes, inaccessible rocks and mud and sand flats make a great home for wildlife and staging post for migrating birds.

We have been taking guest crew to this amazing archipelago 35 miles off Lands End  since 1997. If you want to connect with the islands history then sail on a pilot cutter like Tallulah. For 100 years the pilot trade was the islands main economy, before flowers and then tourism took over. Built in oak and larch 44ft Tallulah is an authentic replica of the Scillionian pilot cutters that were based in the islands around 1870-1890’s, so the islanders love to see her visit. Bristol channel Pilot cutter Mascotte also visits The Isles of Scilly regularly.

Also setting sail to the Scillies on a regular basis are larger wooden sailing ships like ‘Grayhound’, ‘Pilgrim’, Anny and Johanna Lucretia. They might not be able to tuck into the smaller anchorages but they can drop their hook in deeper places. All know the isles well and offer a great social atmosphere on board. The islands sit in the Gulf Stream so ashore sub tropical plants flourish and the seas are rich in wildlife with good opportunities to spot dolphins, basking sharks and seals.

The Isles of Scilly have their own destination pages describing what to do on each island, the routes you might sail amongst the islands and some of our favourite anchorages.

the isles of scilly

A Mecca for Wooden Boats, gaffers, luggers and tall ships

Cornwall has a lot of wooden boats and boatyards. Down here in the SW of England we race Falmouth Oyster Boats and in winter similar half decked gaffers dredge for oysters under sail. In Fowey the iconic Troy keel boats race amongst the moorings and there are numerous boats with bowsprits in all the South Coast ports.

Artists and photographers love us because we help bring historic ships and authentic wooden replicas to Cornish shores. By sailing our vessels you can play a part in creating a maritime spectacle that enhances the small ports and quaysides of Cornwall and brings a timeless quality to a remote anchorage or creek.

Based in St Mawes, Tallulah is a replica of 19th Century pilot cutters that were once a vital part of the economy of Falmouth and the Isles of Scilly. Three-masted lugger ‘Grayhound’ is a replica of a 1776 Cornish revenue lugger that began chasing smugglers and then became a privateer. Pilgrim, is an original deep-sea trawler that would have ranged the whole West Country Coast.

Anny and Johanna Lucretia are wooden tall ships under 100ft that were similar to the working trading ships that unloaded cargoes in tiny harbours all round the coast of Europe.

Sailing Guide: Cornwall to Isles of Scilly (Falmouth & Plymouth)

The Isles of Scilly make an ideal summer destination for sailors, with sandy beaches, clear waters and a host of wildlife, and they can also be reached from Cornwall! Whether you’re sailing from Falmouth or Plymouth the Isles of Scilly are within easy reach, offering a fairly challenging route with big rewards at the end.

How to Sail From Cornwall to the Isles of Scilly?

To sail from Cornwall to the Isles of Scilly, you will need to do an open sea passage in the Atlantic Ocean. Leaving from Falmouth, sail westerly via The Lizard Peninsula and Land's End before heading southerly. It is approximately 50 nautical miles and the total sailing time is around 12 hours. From Plymouth, the distance is approximately 94 nm.

Read on to find out more about sailing from Cornwall to Isles of Scilly, via Falmouth and Plymouth, including travel conditions to watch out for and the best anchorages once you reach the Isles of Scilly.

Falmouth is a convenient starting point for sailing to the Isles of Scilly. Leaving from Falmouth, the journey to the Isles of Scilly and the island of St Mary’s in particular, is approximately 50 nm . It’s about a 12-hour trip from Falmouth to St Mary’s in good conditions and most recommendations state that you should set your arrival time for the daytime, so you have plenty of light to make pilotage easier.

These recommendations are to ensure that you can see the numerous unlit rocks which lurk offshore during your approach. Other hazards to look out for when sailing from Falmouth to the Isles of Scilly include the cluster of rocks known as the Manacles, mid-way between Falmouth and The Lizard Peninsula.

The sea around the Lizard itself is also known for its overfalls. Tidal streams increase significantly in this area so you will need to plan carefully for this section of the crossing. Make sure you check the tide times and avoid foul tide at all costs.

The other option is to go from Falmouth to Newlyn, rounding the Lizard Peninsula and then from Newlyn to St Mary’s . This gives you more flexibility with timings and from Newlyn to the Isles of Scilly it is only 6 hours.

Thanks to its location at the center of the West Country, Plymouth is an ideal starting point for sailors looking to explore this region of the British Isles. With numerous marinas and good road and rail connections, it is well suited to making cruising plans.

The Isles of Scilly are located 94 n.m. from Plymouth and in good weather, they can present a nice destination for sailors looking for a longer, more challenging journey. It is usually best to break up the journey though you can also attempt it all in one go. You might like to stop at the Helford River, approximately 42 nm from Plymouth, or Penzance, around 65 nm.

Helford River

Helford River is a large estuary located between the western edge of Falmouth and the eastern side of the Lizard Peninsula. It is a beautiful and unspoilt location that is a worthy destination in its own right. The shoreline is roughly 50 km in total and offers plenty of beaches and coves to shelter in. From Helford River, it’s another 55 nm to the Isles of Scilly.

Westerlies means slowing down

If you are unlucky and come up against more challenging conditions, including strong winds and persistent westerlies that can be common, you might prefer to cut your journey down into even smaller chunks. You could choose to stop in picturesque Fowey, for instance, and wait for the weather to change. Though it’s not great if you’re on a deadline, taking the journey slower allows you to appreciate the Cornish coastline at least!

Open sea crossing needed

Despite being only 50 nm between the UK mainland and the Isles of Scilly, the islands can be a challenge to reach as an open sea passage is needed. Thanks to their location at the southwestern-most point of the UK, the Isles of Scilly are located in an area with Atlantic swell and prevailing southwest/westerly winds. As a result, you should not attempt the crossing if the sea is rough.

On the other hand, there are deep channels in any wind direction for the majority of the crossing. The most important thing to look out for is underwater rocks and shallows, as well as offshore reefs. You should take care that you are equipped with an up-to-date map, a chart plotter, reliable GPS and some backup navigation before attempting the crossing.

Our recommended navigation gear Reliable navigation equipment doesn't have to break the bank. Be sure to check out our compass and chartplotter recommendation here.

The waters in the Isles of Scilly are very clear so you can usually see dangers lying under water if you are travelling in good light. Transits and rocks can be harder to identify so it is a good idea to take a pair of binoculars with you.

Travelling from Plymouth and Falmouth to the Isles of Scilly can either be easy or really challenging. The weather can be unpredictable and change rapidly so keep up with the forecasts. Similarly, the tides will also impact your crossing as Spring tides have a rise and fall of as much as 20 feet in the Isles of Scilly.

Of the 140 islands that make up the Isles of Scilly, only five are inhabited. Among these islands, you can find anchorages that are suitable for all wind directions so be prepared to move for better comfort if the winds shift.

The most populated island is St Mary’s, home to roughly 75 percent of the population, and this is one of the most popular anchorage spots for first time visiting sailors. St Mary’s offers berthing in two harbors and swinging moorings. The harbors are the bay of Porth Cressa, in the southeast corner, and St Mary’s Pool, on the north side. St Mary’s Pool is largely protected apart from west/north-westerlies. Porth Cressa is protected from all but south/south-westerlies.

As well as St Mary’s, you can also find moorings on the neighboring island of Tresco. Tresco is just two miles long. There are deep water mornings at New Grimsby Sound, which tends to be well protected, and Old Grimsby Harbor. A narrow isthmus separates the islands from one another.

Outside harbor limits, there are no restrictions on where you can drop anchor , provided you keep clear of the main channels. You should also take care not to block the turning area for the Penzance to St Mary’s ferry.

St. Helen's Pool is the most settled anchorage

It is worth bearing in mind that the ground swell can be significant around the Isles of Scilly and even in sheltered areas you might struggle with rolling. One of the best recommendations for such conditions is St Helen’s Pool, nestled between Tresco and the island of St Martin’s. Even in strong winds, St Helen’s tends to be more settled than other locations.

The tides on the Isles of Scilly can be large which makes navigation trickier. You will need to keep an eye on weather changes and may have to move your anchorage to a more sheltered area. Travel with a reliable anchor and ground tackle as you cannot rely on finding a mooring buoy. Local fishermen also recommend taking a fisherman’s anchor as well as your main anchor to combat the amount of seaweed covered rocks around the islands.

For your first trip to the Isles of Scilly, you will probably prefer to go to one of the well-documented anchorage spots. However, once you become more familiar with the waters around the islands, you can begin to explore and seek out your personal favorites.

If you are up to the challenge and you choose the right conditions, sailing from Cornwall to the Isles of Scilly can be a hugely rewarding experience. You might find yourself sailing with a pod of dolphins or even basking sharks.

That being said, the crossing is weather and tide dependent so you will need to be flexible with the timings of your voyage. From Falmouth, if the weather is good, you can expect to reach the Isles of Scilly in 12 hours. It will take longer from Plymouth but can be combined with stops along the way.

Once you make it to the Isles of Scilly, you will find an enchanting island that is a sailor’s paradise, with hidden inlets and coves to explore and the sweet, slow pace of island life. Make sure to keep an eye on the weather patterns and be prepared to change anchor if need be. It’s all part of the adventure.

Karen Taylor

Hi Elizabeth. Thank you for your advice on sailing around Cornwall. I have a place in Penzance and am an author, writing a sequel to my debut thriller Fairest Creatures. The sea, as you can imagine, plays a large part in the book. I have sailed myself — I did a sailing course last year in Penzance — but I was wondering if you could sail to the Lizard by boat? I can’t get any specific details online. It would seem to be nearer than the Scilly Isles, which is quite a distance. Do you have any ideas about timings and moorings and whether the trip would be feasible for a seasoned sailor?

Many thanks,

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing Between a Sailboat or Catamaran for Your Sailing Adventures

C hoosing between a sailboat and a catamaran for your sailing adventures is a significant decision that depends on various factors, including your sailing preferences, experience level, budget, and intended use. Here's an ultimate guide to help you make an informed decision:

1. Sailing Experience:

  • Sailboats: Typically require more skill and experience to handle, especially in adverse weather conditions. Ideal for sailors who enjoy the traditional feel of sailing and are willing to invest time in learning and mastering the art.
  • Catamarans: Easier to handle, making them suitable for beginners. The dual-hull design provides stability, reducing the learning curve for those new to sailing.

2. Space and Comfort:

  • Sailboats: Generally have a narrower beam and less living space. However, some sailboats may offer comfortable cabins and amenities.
  • Catamarans: Wider beam creates more living space. Catamarans often have multiple cabins, spacious saloons, and expansive deck areas, providing a more comfortable living experience.

3. Stability:

  • Sailboats: Monohulls can heel (lean) while sailing, which some sailors enjoy for the thrill but can be discomforting for others.
  • Catamarans: Greater stability due to the dual hulls, providing a more level sailing experience. Reduced heeling makes catamarans suitable for those prone to seasickness.

4. Performance:

  • Sailboats: Known for their upwind performance and ability to sail close to the wind. Some sailors appreciate the challenge of optimizing sail trim for efficiency.
  • Catamarans: Faster on a reach and downwind due to their wide beam. However, they may not point as high into the wind as monohulls.
  • Sailboats: Typically have a deeper draft, limiting access to shallow anchorages and requiring deeper marina berths.
  • Catamarans: Shallow draft allows access to shallower waters and secluded anchorages, providing more flexibility in cruising destinations.
  • Sailboats: Generally more affordable upfront, with a wide range of options available to fit different budgets.
  • Catamarans: Often more expensive upfront due to their size and design. However, maintenance costs may be comparable or even lower in some cases.

7. Mooring and Docking:

  • Sailboats: Easier to find slips and moorings in marinas designed for monohulls.
  • Catamarans: Require wider slips and may have limited availability in certain marinas, especially in crowded anchorages.

8. Intended Use:

  • Sailboats: Ideal for traditional sailors who enjoy the art of sailing, racing enthusiasts, or those on a tighter budget.
  • Catamarans: Suited for those prioritizing comfort, stability, and spacious living areas, especially for long-term cruising and chartering.

9. Resale Value:

  • Sailboats: Generally have a more established resale market, with a wider range of buyers.
  • Catamarans: Growing in popularity, and well-maintained catamarans often retain their value.

10. Personal Preference:

  • Consider your personal preferences, the type of sailing you plan to do, and the kind of lifestyle you want aboard your vessel.

In conclusion, both sailboats and catamarans have their advantages and disadvantages. Your decision should be based on your individual preferences, experience level, budget, and intended use. If possible, charter both types of vessels to experience firsthand how they handle and to help make a more informed decision based on your own preferences and needs.
