Sanlorenzo Fleet

There’s been a lot of chatter about hydrogen -powered superyachts, but Sanlorenzo now has a concrete plan to get one to sea.

The Italian yacht builder, which is no stranger to innovation, has announced that it will deliver a 164-footer equipped with hydrogen fuel cells as soon as 2024. Sanlorenzo’s CEO Massimo Perotti is so confident in the design, in fact, that he is backing it himself, as reported by the Superyacht Times .

Perotti has bought the very first hull in order to fund the development and test the new technology before making it available for Sanlorenzo’s clients. Think of him as a very lucky test pilot. The CEO also confirmed that this will be the world’s first 164-foot motor yacht to feature the emissions-free technology.

To help with the lofty endeavor, Sanlorenzo has signed an exclusive agreement with Siemens Energy. Together, the duo plan to more widely integrate fuel cells in the 79 to 262 foot (24–80 meter) yachting sector with a new generation hybrid (diesel-electric) propulsion system that will be showcased for the first time in the new superyacht.

So, how does it work? According to the yard, the hydrogen fuel cells will generate electricity from reformed methanol to power the vessel. This means that yachts fitted with this “Net-zero GHG emission” system will be able to produce clean, green energy even when the generators and engines are switched off. In turn, the vessels will rely less on diesel fuel while both at anchor and at sea to lower the overall environmental impact and increase efficiency.

It’s worth noting that the hydrogen setup will power the hotel load and not the propulsion system as that’s considered to be the most damaging when it comes to carbon emissions.

Sanlorenzo has not yet shared any details about the superyacht’s design, but the yard has been exploring asymmetrical designs more frequently with models like the SL120A . If this 164-footer is anything like the rest of the fleet, we should be in for a surprise.

Sanlorenzo 106 Hybrid yacht has been fitted with a hybrid technology-based power and propulsion system, delivered by Dutch power and propulsion specialist WhisperPower . The 32m Sanlorenzo 106 Hybrid superyacht represents the first vessel to feature WhisperPower’s latest technology. She has recently started cruising.

Sanlorenzo 106 Yacht

Sanlorenzo 106 Yacht

The hybrid power and propulsion system for motor yacht Sanlorenzo 106 Hybrid includes two 150 kW WhisperPower HyGen variable speed generators, which together deliver up to 300 kW, of which at least 60 kW is used for the “hotel load” and 240 kW is used for propulsion. More specifically, they provide electricity for two 130 kW electric motors, which are installed in the drivetrain between the two MTU 2000 kW main engines and the propeller and are used for electric sail. As soon as the MTUs are switched on, the electric engines take over the running of the hotel load from the generator.

The main objective of the super yacht Sanlorenzo 106 Hybrid project was to provide the vessel with a speed of 9 knots using the electric motors whereby the vessel can cover large distances quietly and above all economically as well as being able to enter bays. This can result in a saving of many tens of thousands to more than a hundred thousand Euros per season.

A second objective was to make luxury yacht Sanlorenzo 106 Hybrid  “quiet” overnight whilst still providing maximum comfort. As the onboard power supply was set up as three-phase 400 volt, WhisperPower developed a 10 kW three-phase inverter that enabled the air conditioning units, refrigerators, freezers etc to continue to run. In total, 40 kW can be loaded on to the inverter. As a backup, two 15 kW Genverters have been installed together with several DC PowerCube charge modules that quickly and completely charge the batteries either when shore power is available or via the Genverters. All components, including the non-WhisperPower products, are connected via a central CAN bus system.

“It was a wonderful experience during the sea trial with the San Lorenzo 106 to sail super silently on e-propulsion. You could only hear the water and still, we were going at nine knots. The boost function, so adding the e-motors to the MTUs also worked well. We achieved a speed of almost 50 knots. The semi-electric sailing was also a success: with the MTU on one propellor and electric motor on the other, the diesel consumption was 40 liters / hour at a fairly decent speed,” said Stijn de Wit Project Engineer WhisperPower.

WhisperPower will be attending this week’s METSTRADE , with various components of a 300 kW onboard power & propulsion system on display at their stand 09.410 in the SuperYacht Pavilion.

Sanlorenzo's new 73Steel moves to outfitting

Related articles, superyacht directory.

Italian shipyard Sanlorenzo has moved its hybrid 73Steel model to its La Spezia facility to begin outfitting. It comes after the keel was laid almost exactly a year ago. Delivery of the steel-and-aluminium new build is slated for 2025.

The 72-metre model started life as a 72Steel, but has since been reclassified as Sanlorenzo's new flagship 73Steel range . The design of the 1,900 GT vessel saw Sanlorenzo team up once again with Zuccon International Project and Francesco Paszkowski Design . The owner's cabin will have a dedicated deck above the bridge deck while the main deck will be the area reserved for guests with lounge areas and five spacious cabins. One of the model's major features will be an extensive wellness area to ensure relaxation for all guests on board, which will make full use of the yacht's 13.1-metre beam.

Speaking at the keel-laying, Antonio Santella, new product development director of Sanlorenzo’s Superyacht Division said: “[The yacht] is aiming to become one of the new protagonists of the Sanlorenzo range, thanks also to the hybrid diesel-electric engine system, which confirms again the company's increasing attention to the future, constantly studying concrete solutions to reduce the impact of its yachts on the marine ecosystem."

"The hybrid diesel-electric engine system represents a combination of innovative solutions which make it possible to significantly reduce emissions into the atmosphere and the sea, ensure high levels of comfort and rationalise the spaces dedicated to the engine area in favour of the internal volume available for owners and guests, thus presenting itself as a new paradigm for superyachts of this size,” he added.

The 72-metre project was sold in December 2021 by Edmiston and will dethrone the shipyard's current flagship, Attila , by an extra six metres.

Sanlorenzo to Launch the New E Motion Hybrid Yacht Model

Sanlorenzo continues its green investments applying Diesel/electric and hybrid propulsion systems to a complete range of models

Sanlorenzo 500Exp E Motion

Sanlorenzo in spotlight as the new “E Motion” with electric propulsion systems is announced

The E Motion will be the latest addition to the yachts line-up as Sanlorenzo is set to launch the “E Motion” to further its green investments applying Diesel/electric and hybrid propulsion systems to a complete range of models.

The E Motion range will consist of both displacement superyachts in metal with a diesel/electric propulsion, and high performance planing yachts in fiberglass, equipped with hybrid system. The first two fiberglass units will be launched in 2018, two SL86 E Motion models of 27 m in length.

“Always leading with innovation, it’s not surprising that Sanlorenzo is leading the way with the new E motion series of yachts. A great leap forward for the industry where clients are looking to enjoy their yachts whilst considering the environmental impacts,” comments Nick Stratton, Sanlorenzo APAC Sales Manager.

In recent years, auto giants have rolled-out their go-green vehicles with the launch of electric cars to combat pollutants that routinely raises the dangerous levels of carbon emissions. But if the automotive segment, after initial hesitation, reports remarkable results, the nautical industry sees a slower and more difficult diffusion of electric and hybrid propulsion systems.

Today, the segment is growing fast and Sanlorenzo wants to continue to be a part of this green transformation process, in which the shipyard started out in 2015 with its SL106 Hybrid model.

“Even in Asia where the market is still maturing, I am often asked about the possibility of a hybrid propulsion system in Sanlorenzo, so to have it as a readily available option knowing that its been tried and tested, is a great sales tool and a satisfying option to give our clients,” says Nick Stratton, Sanlorenzo APAC Sales Manager.

The propulsion systems that characterise these models are able to guarantee:

  • Greater safety at sea: the double electrical system is “redundant”, and therefore able to function even in case of a breakdown: the unavailable portion is left out while the second part keeps operating.
  • Greater efficiency: the fuel consumption of the variable speed generators is controlled electronically according to the required load, therefore it is much lower than the traditional consumption.
  • Greater comfort : the variable speed generators are smaller than conventional groups, and are mounted on shock and vibrations absorber structures.
  • Greater space on board: the variable speed groups are double, but they take much less volume than diesel engines of the same power and they are mounted overlapped, clearing the space usually taken by a traditional engine room, for the benefit of the owner and his guests.
  • Greater flexibility: the propulsion and the energy required onboard can be managed in different profiles according to the captain’s need and the owner’s desires.
  • Significant emission reduction: in Zero Emission Mode it is possible to sail – at low speed and for short range – using only the energy of the batteries: this allows spending an entire night at anchor without using the VSG, and reaching natural parks and restricted marine areas that are impossible to access with traditional systems.

san lorenzo hybrid yacht

By 2020, also the first three Sanlorenzo Superyachts with diesel/electric systems will be available: the 44Alloy E Motion , 500Exp E Emotion and 62Steel E Motion – respectively 44 m, 47 m and 62 m in length. The range will be complete in 2021 with the introduction of 50Alloy, 1000Exp and 58Steel.

The E Motion yachts and superyachts will be equipped with tenders, in which the shipyard is cooperating with strategic partners to develop full electric Jet tenders.

According to their characteristics, the E Motion models can be equipped with hybrid or diesel/electric propulsion systems:

Hybrid Propulsion System: A system where the main propulsion relies on Diesel engines, and electric motors operate on demand along with the main engine in order to increase its power.

The hybrid system is installed on Sanlorenzo’s fiberglass models and uses smaller and less powerful engines than the conventional ones, which means less consumption when the boat sails at cruising speed. Only when required, with the help of gen sets and batteries, this system generates the power to feed the electric motors which are paired with the main engines, making the yacht reach the top performances.

When sailing, the electric engines can be exploited as energy generators to manage the onboard consumption and/or to recharge the batteries.

Electric Propulsion System: A system where the motion to the propeller is given by an electric motor fed by variable speed generators, by Lithium ion batteries or by a combination of the two.

The diesel/electric system onboard the Sanlorenzo Superyachts consists of four or more generators (called VSG) according to the size of the yacht and the required performances, without the traditional power generators.

500Exp E Motion model – Art Gallery Engine Room

These generators take much less volume compared to the “classic” engines and can considerably reduce the space usually dedicated to the engine room, to the benefit of the onboard leisure areas. On the 500Exp E Motion model, it allowed the creation of an indoor hallway that links the main salon with the beach club, walking through a beautiful engine room in a glass corridor, called “Art Gallery Engine Room”.

Since the propeller rotation is managed by the electric motors positioned closed to the propellers, there is no need of any mechanical transmission connection. The electric system is therefore more silent, efficient and lasting than a traditional one, and more flexible to install, giving maximum freedom in the interior lay-out possibilities.

The generated energy can be stocked in Lithium ion battery banks of different sizes, according to the yacht dimension, so that it can be used also in “zero emission mode” when at anchor, or when exploring restricted marine parks otherwise not navigable.

Both the hybrid and the electric systems are able to provide energy not only for the propulsion but also for the hotel load.

Volvo Penta to install its propulsion platform in two dual-power Sanlorenzo yachts

Elizabeth Baker

Volvo Penta and Sanlorenzo will bring Volvo Penta’s IPS professional platform – the technology and propulsion platform for commercial marine vessels and superyachts – to two dual-power Sanlorenzo yachts, the SX120 and the SX132.

The two models are expected to launch in 2025 and 2027 respectively and will be the first superyachts installed with the IPS professional platform. The IPS platform has been designed to offer comfort, performance and sustainability for a new class of marine vessels and superyachts. Equipped with new intelligent technology features and designed for enhanced sustainability, the IPS professional platform delivers up to 30% reduction in fuel consumption and emissions.

“When adopting new solutions into superyachts, we must always consider the experience of owners and the captain. The IPS professional platform not only delivers new levels of efficiency and flexibility but also elevates the yachting experience through the fully integrated helm-to-propeller platform. Intelligent features combined with the platform’s unique design provide additional comfort and peace of mind,” said Johan Inden, president of Volvo Penta Marine. “Our collaboration with Sanlorenzo marks a new journey toward decarbonization in the yachting sector. We’re excited to see the launch of the first IPS professional platform-equipped superyacht in 2025.”

According to the two companies, the compact design of the IPS platform frees up onboard space and reduces perceived noise by up to 50%. Additionally, the forward-facing propeller design and efficient dual power input reduce vibration levels on board.

Highlights of the new platform include a flexible dual-power drive system and intelligent power management. The solution can be installed as a twin, triple, or quad, enabling a mix of power sources to meet the yacht’s needs. Each yacht can have between four and eight power sources from internal combustion engines running renewable fuels to fully electric or hybrid solutions. The flexibility to select the type of power source and engine enables unparalleled efficiency.

Additionally, Eco Mode is a new smart feature that will leverage onboard sensors to automatically start/stop engines based on the power needs of the captain. The platform will consider optimal fuel consumption and engine run time hours to engage the engine for the lowest time for a given scenario. This will improve efficiency and extend service/maintenance intervals.

san lorenzo hybrid yacht

The introduction of the IPS professional platform into Sanlorenzo’s yachts forms part of Volvo Penta’s efforts to integrate sustainability into its products. The two companies plan to explore multiple solutions and paths including renewable fuels, hybrid and electric technology, fuel cells and efficiency-driven solutions for yacht and propulsion design.

Sanlorenzo will launch the first 50 Steel yacht in 2024, equipped with a modular Reformer Fuel Cell system capable of transforming green methanol into hydrogen and then into electricity to power domestic loads, such as lighting, air conditioning and the kitchen. The system will lay the groundwork for the introduction of the first superyacht powered solely by green methanol by the end of the decade.

“The wishes of the customer have always been a fundamental part of Sanlorenzo’s philosophy. We begin at the intersection of technology and sustainability, combining the latest industry innovations with custom features and design that reflect the customer’s individual style. As the marine industry moves toward decarbonization, we continue to pursue a premier experience that adheres to our vision of a sustainable future,” said Massimo Perotti, chairman and CEO of Sanlorenzo. “As a committed project partner, Sanlorenzo is proud to produce the first custom yachts equipped with the all-new IPS professional platform and contribute to the journey of decarbonizing the marine industry.”

Sanlorenzo Announces Launch of Net-zero Superyacht in 2027

By Heather Collier

In a press conference at the Blue Innovation Dock at boot Düsseldorf, Sanlorenzo's CEO Massimo Perotti took the opportunity to highlight its three-step mission "Road to 2030" that will launch the first net-zero superyacht in 2027.

Major investment in research and development will begin over the course of the next five years, a significant time for the shipyard, which involves the construction of a 50Steel.

The 50-metre model will be the first of three remarkable launches, all of which will include the first practical use of methanol and fuel cell technology on board a superyacht.

Technological testing and advances are already being implemented by Siemens with the hope of an initial launch in 2025, with fuel cells powering the hotel load only. Perotti views this as the first imperative step in the direction towards net zero.

Working in collaboration with Lloyd's Register, Sanlorenzo will develop a carbon-neutral power generation system, with a major increase in the power developed by the reformer/fuel cell modules, allowing low-speed and wide-range navigation in carbon neutral conditions, all achieved through a hybrid propulsion system.

The framework of this system will overcome a number of the current limitations of systems today, many of which in zero emission mode have to lean on the modest energy capacity of the batteries.

This second step in Sanlorenzo's strategy will mean many technological advancements not only for the yacht's structure, but its plant configuration. Commencing in 2026, Sanlorenzo is set to launch a vessel that has combined fuel cell technology for the hotel mode and hybrid for use when on the move.

The final step in Sanlorenzo's "Road to 2030" strategy is the design and construction of a superyacht powered entirely by green methanol.

Diesel engines will no longer serve as a requirement to sail at maximum speed. Instead, the yacht will be powered by a combination of fuel cells and internal combustion engines, both powered by green methanol.

The project is on course to be launched in 2027, with very little information available at this time. However, the shipyard has revealed it is currently in discussion with the IMO regulatory board regarding the restrictions on the maximum GT of superyachts, particularly those below 499 GT.

Sanlorenzo, with support from the Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss), is arguing that in order for shipyards to make greener alternatives more desirable to superyacht owners, the board should overlook any additional space needed for this vital fuel cell technology.

Sanlorenzo’s Asymmetric SL106A Reviewed

  • By Diane M. Byrne
  • July 1, 2022

Sanlorenzo SL106A

Any time a company deviates from “the norm,” eyebrows raise. This is especially true in yachting, which remains a fairly conservative industry in terms of design. Traditional looks still sell, so many builders play it pretty safe, as is evident at any boat show where attendees are incredulous upon seeing a radically different yacht.

Massimo Perotti, the chairman and CEO of Sanlorenzo , knows the feeling. When the shipyard announced the addition of Asymmetric models to its SL series, the news was met with “a bit of skepticism,” he says. These Asymmetric models push usable interior space out to the full beam on one side—and only one side, where there’s no traditional side deck.

Sanlorenzo SL106A

Captains and crew accustomed to having two side decks to handle lines and get around the yacht were worried. Customers could have been too, but funny enough, the customers liked it. Then, the captains and crew came around.

“The market has been receiving the Asymmetric idea very well,” Perotti says, adding that acceptance came partly because the side deck isn’t actually removed; it’s just moved. When owners see and feel the difference in the interior, and how much it enhances their connection to the cruising environment, they’re sold.

Sanlorenzo SL106A

The idea behind the Asymmetric line dates back several years. Sanlorenzo was wrestling with how to provide owners with more usable interior space. An initial idea was a widebody design, in which the main-deck interior spans the yacht’s full beam. Sanlorenzo quickly decided that wasn’t practical for smaller to midsize superyachts. So, Perotti sought the input of designer Chris Bangle, with whom Sanlorenzo has been working since 2015. Bangle is known for shaking up the designs of Fiat and BMW. He came up with the notion of a widebody to one side to benefit owners along with a full side deck opposite, as well as an over-the-widebody passage from the flybridge to the bow to benefit the crew.

Sanlorenzo then tapped Zuccon International Project and its own design department to make the concept float. The first Asymmetric model, the SL102A, debuted in May 2018, with about a dozen contracts coming in less than a year. After that, customers began asking for a slightly longer aft deck and swim platform, which resulted in the creation of the SL106A.

If you’re still trying to wrap your brain around the asymmetry, rest assured that the SL106A doesn’t look lopsided. In fact, unless you know to look for the difference, you may not even notice it at first.

Sanlorenzo SL106A

There is still a side deck to starboard, and the twin stairways leading from the swim platform to the main deck aft are what you’re used to seeing. The same is true when you view the vessel bow-on or in aerial photos. Handrail-lined side decks—truly dedicated passageways outboard of the leisure areas—on the flybridge lend aesthetic balance.

For the remaining skeptics, consider that most flybridge yachts don’t provide a way for the crew to reach the foredeck from up top. The SL106A has a few stairs on the widebody side. Crew also can access the flybridge via an alfresco floating stairway aft and to port on the main deck, or by way of steps from the raised pilothouse (a configuration that’s hidden until you step aboard).

As for the extra interior space, the one-sided widebody adds nearly 108 square feet to the main deck. Much of it is used in the open-plan salon and dining area, where most owners and guests spend their time when they’re not swimming or otherwise enjoying the great outdoors. Additionally, a nearly sole-to-ceiling window is on the widebody side. Guests can practically stand right up against it, lending the sensation of hovering directly above the water. Sliding glass doors and a deploying balcony opposite, along with the 23-foot beam, add to the roomy feel.

Sanlorenzo SL106A

The main-deck master stateroom also feels airy because of a rectangular port forward, directly over the bed. (Where so many builders position the en suite head; Sanlorenzo situates it along the portside entry.) This stateroom has a door to the starboard-side deck. Push a button, and there’s access to the foredeck settee with a table for a private breakfast or snack. A few steps up on the port side are a sun pad and the stairs to the flybridge.

In challenging conventional notions of how a yacht has to look and function, Sanlorenzo actually includes new ways to get around. And the SL106A is still a 10-guest, 28-knot yacht. That is about as traditional as they come.

Sanlorenzo SL106A

Fueling the Future

Sanlorenzo is exploring alternatives to traditional diesel fuel. In partnership with Siemens Energy, it’s developing a superyacht with methanol fuel-cell systems to generate electricity—a proven technology that has never been used in yachting. Delivery of the 164-footer is expected in 2024.

Sanlorenzo Arts

Recognizing that its customers regularly attend major art fairs, Sanlorenzo has a global partnership agreement for the Art Basel events in Hong Kong, Switzerland and Miami through 2023. The shipyard created Sanlorenzo Arts to better connect its brand to the art world, collaborating with artists for special exhibitions.

Sanlorenzo created its High-End Services division in 2020 to enhance customer relationships. Services include leasing and financing, crew training at the Sanlorenzo Academy, as well as maintenance and refit through Sanlorenzo Timeless. The builder is augmenting the division this year to increase client loyalty and attract new buyers.

Rolls-Royce and Sanlorenzo team up for methanol propulsion in luxury yachts

  • Green methanol fuel to make shipping net zero
  • “Making for a radically different yacht-owning experience”
  • Trend reversal: “In many cases, engine power output will no longer be the sole yardstick”

Rolls-Royce and Italian yacht builder Sanlorenzo plan to develop and build a large motor yacht with a methanol engine propulsion system able to run carbon-neutrally on 'green' methanol. The two companies announced an exclusive memorandum of understanding to this effect for yachts between 40 and 70 meters on the eve of the opening of the 2022 Cannes Yachting Festival. Powered by two mtu methanol engines based on the Series 4000, the Sanlorenzo yacht is expected to undertake her maiden voyage in 2026.

“We're making shipping more environmentally friendly and easier on the climate, and this agreement is a big step forward in the right direction,” said Denise Kurtulus, Vice President of Global Marine at Rolls-Royce Power Systems: “Synthetic methanol, produced using electricity generated from renewable sources, is the obvious fuel of the future for many maritime applications – not least yacht propulsion.” This is because methanol is a liquid which is easy to manage, and people are already used to handling it because it is already available in ports today. “Sanlorenzo is one of the most innovative yacht builders, making it our partner of choice for this project,” she added.

Massimo Perotti, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sanlorenzo, said: “The introduction of innovations and technologies to reduce the environmental impact of yachts has long been the focus of the Group's research and development department. The subscription of the agreement with Rolls-Royce and its brand mtu for the integration of methanol propulsion systems   on our superyachts represents for our Group a memorable moment, because it gives an extraordinary acceleration to our responsible path and widens our horizons: thanks to the marine use of methanol as a fuel for combustion engines, which allows carbon-neutral powerful propulsion,   Sanlorenzo will be able to give the true answer to the demand for sustainability in the yachting sector. I thank Rolls-Royce for choosing Sanlorenzo as a partner for the joint development of a technology that is going to change the paradigm of the yachting industry.”

Green methanol is climate-friendly and carbon-neutral because it is produced using solar or wind power: The first stage is to take hydrogen and synthesize it into methanol (CH3HO) using carbon and oxygen from the air. Carbon in the form of CO2 is released into the air during combustion – but no more than was taken from it during production of the fuel. As a result, the cycle is carbon-neutral. “This sees us creating a radically different yacht-owning experience”, said Kurtulus. Emissions of particulate and nitrogen oxides are also much lower than from diesel engines, making it possible to stay within NOx limits without an SCR unit treating the exhaust gases.

The methanol engine, which is expected to be spark ignited, will be based on the winning mtu Series 4000. “Our many years of experience and our extensive expertise in mobile and stationary gas engines will give us a head start in development,” said Dr. Otto Preiss, COO and Chief Technology Officer at Rolls-Royce's Power Systems division. “We will have methanol-powered propulsion systems in our portfolio for other maritime applications as well as yachts, for example for commercial shipping. These will be part of our ecosystem with sustainable fuels, that we’re currently building. The ecosystem will also include fuel-cell-powered applications as well as electrolysis of green hydrogen, the basic ingredient for green methanol,” Preiss continued.

“We're pleased to see Italian yards, which figure prominently in the yacht market, showing a keen interest in sustainable technology. This collaboration with Sanlorenzo demonstrates that the Italian yacht building industry is taking a leading role in climate and environmental protection,” emphasizes Gianluca Bononi. He is deputy head of the Power Systems marine business unit and Managing Director of Rolls-Royce Solutions Italia based in La Spezia on the Ligurian coast, the heart of the Italian yacht building industry.

The plan is to build a large Sanlorenzo luxury yacht tailored to the new type of propulsion system and its requirements. The two partners regard the additional effort as challenging but feasible: because methanol's energy density is around 50% below that of diesel, the fuel tanks need to be about twice as big to give the vessel the same range as with diesel propulsion. Safety requirements happen to be potentially lower than with other fuels and technologies – because methanol is non-toxic. “From an engineering perspective, a methanol engine is technically the ideal compromise for the future,” said Denise Kurtulus with conviction.

As a rule of thumb, developers expect the power output of a methanol propulsion system to be about one-third less than that of a diesel system of the same size and mass. “In reality, that isn't terribly important,” said Kurtulus. “This is because larger, heavier engines are more likely to be installed in large yachts of 40 to 50 meters in length than in smaller vessels, and yacht owners who want to be climate-friendly and go easy on the environment aren't generally looking to wring out the last ounce of power. We're seeing a trend reversal in the market. In many cases, engine power output in and of itself will no longer be the yardstick. Instead, there will be more and more customers who want to do their bit to protect the climate and now we can also offer them a solution, too,” concluded Ms. Kurtulus.

In parallel with the Cannes Yachting Festival, Rolls-Royce will be presenting new mtu marine propulsion, automation and service solutions – including methanol engines and fuel cell systems – under the slogan 'Pioneering the journey to net zero' at SMM, the international maritime industry trade show, in Hamburg, Germany, from 6 to 9 September 2022.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

san lorenzo hybrid yacht

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

san lorenzo hybrid yacht

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

san lorenzo hybrid yacht

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

san lorenzo hybrid yacht

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

san lorenzo hybrid yacht

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

san lorenzo hybrid yacht

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

san lorenzo hybrid yacht

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
