Newport International Boat Show set for Sept. 12-15. What to know.

NEWPORT – The Newport International Boat Show will take place Sept. 12 to 15 at the Newport Yachting Center Marina.

The Newport International Boat Show spans over 15 acres with six connecting show sites within historic downtown Newport, according to a news release. Visitors can walk the docks and view a spectacular display of new sailboats and powerboats, some making their debut in the United States. This year there’s an acre of even more boats to see throughout show, including a brokerage basin, with both power and sail boats ranging up to 110 feet now on display for the first time. On the land side, visitors will find hundreds of marine products, services and accessories to enhance the boating lifestyle.

Educational presentations and tech talks

Also on deck are the Cruiser’s Classroom, located Below-Deck at the Hammetts entrance to the Show, an educational experience featuring interactive presentations covering an array of marine-related topics such as boating, fishing, safety, boat maintenance and financing 101. Tech Talks are hands-on technical training classes for boaters of all experience levels led by American Boat and Yacht Council expert and Boat of the Year judge Ed Sherman (registration in advance is required for this course as seating is limited).

New models on display

As the kickoff for boat show season, many exhibitors launch new models for the first time in the U.S. at this show. Keep an eye out for the red and blue Newport for New Products Awards Program decals and burgees indicating each boat or product entry. Industry experts will judge each entry on opening day and awards are given in several categories. All winners will be announced Friday, Sept. 13. This year the program is featuring more than 40 new product and boat debuts, both power and sail.

The Windward VIP Lounge

New for this year, the show is offering an exclusive experience with the Windward VIP Lounge, a private oasis with views of Narragansett Bay and the ocean sounds of an active waterfront. It includes a premium open bar, gourmet food served all day, private restrooms and a place to relax and lounge, indoors and outdoors, and daily must-see pop-up activations.

Craft cocktails, chowder, burgers and more

The Bohlin Tent, located at the end of Commercial Wharf, is a place to take a pause to enjoy music and a variety of offerings for sale like Dillon’s Small Batch Distillers, Fishers Island Lemonade, Francis Ford Coppola, Newport Craft Brewing, Springline Coffee, Tequila Ocho, Sobieski Vodka, or Via Corota offering craft cocktails. Showgoers can also grab a quick bite at Wally’s Wieners, Castle Hill Inn and Food Love Market offerings, Newport Chowder Company clam chowder, Smoke House burgers and pulled pork sandwiches, and more.

“Expanding on the successful momentum of the past few years, we have added a number of brand-new experiences and activities to delight and entertain our visitors,” said Jocelyn Emory, marketing director of Newport International Boat Show. “Every year, we try to build an incredible event for our attendees, and we are proud to debut many of these offerings this year. Opening Preview Day is Thursday, Sept. 12, sponsored by Discover Newport and Marsh McLennan Agency, and the ticket price is $40. A One-Day General Admission ticket if purchased now through Sept. 11 is $31 or day-of tickets are $33, valid any one day Friday-Sunday.

Windward VIP Lounge One-Day Tickets  are $275. It is recommended to purchase digital tickets in advance. Digital tickets will be scanned at entry of the Windward Lounge. This VIP ticket is admission to the Windward and is your admission to the show for any one day of the Show. Visitors must be 18 or older to enter the Windward VIP Lounge. Limited quantities available.

Parking and show hours

The best place to park in town is at Easton’s Beach in Newport.  A parking pass is $40  per vehicle and we recommend securing your spot by purchasing online. There will be continuous, complimentary shuttles to and from the show site (only 1.5 miles) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

George Hinterhoeller, an Austrian immigrant, brought with him a passion for sailing and a vision to create boats that would stand the test of time. His first design, the Y Flyer, was a testament to his craftsmanship and attention to detail. But it was the Shark 24, introduced in 1959, that truly put Hinterhoeller Yachts on the map. This vessel, initially built of wood and later transitioned to fiberglass, achieved significant racing success and became a beloved classic among sailors1.

The 1960s and 70s saw Hinterhoeller Yachts flourish as they produced a variety of designs, including the Redwing 30, Invader 36, Douglas 31/32, and the Frigate 36. The company’s ethos was grounded in creating boats that were not only beautiful but also functional and durable1.

In 1969, Hinterhoeller played a pivotal role in the formation of C&C Yachts, a partnership that would further cement his legacy in the boating world. However, by 1975, Hinterhoeller’s desire to return to a more hands-on approach led him to sell his shares in C&C and re-establish Hinterhoeller Yachts in 19771.

The rebirth of Hinterhoeller Yachts was marked by the introduction of the Niagara 35, designed by Mark Ellis, and the Nonsuch line, which became a commercial triumph with nearly 975 units built. These boats were celebrated for their distinctive hull shapes, spacious interiors, and the innovative unstayed catboat rig that set them apart from their contemporaries1.

George Hinterhoeller’s philosophy was simple: create sensible, timeless models that meet the needs of sailors. He believed in the power of innovation and the importance of customer input, which is why every Hinterhoeller yacht was custom-built. This approach allowed for a level of personalization that was rare in the industry1.

The company’s commitment to quality was evident in every aspect of their operation, from the selection of materials to the skilled craftsmanship that went into each vessel. They used marine-grade 316L Stainless Steel for its superior strength and corrosion resistance, ensuring that each yacht would endure the harsh marine environment1.

Despite the challenges faced by the marine industry, Hinterhoeller Yachts remained a steadfast presence until its closure in 1995. George Hinterhoeller’s passing in 1999 marked the end of an era, but his legacy lives on through the timeless designs and enduring spirit of the boats he created1.

Today, Hinterhoeller Yachts are sought after by enthusiasts who appreciate the blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern design. The Shark 24, Nonsuch, and Niagara models continue to be revered in the sailing community, and the company’s influence can still be felt in the design principles that guide modern sailboat construction.
