Koru is a 127-metre sailing yacht currently delivered from Oceanco in the Netherlands. Reportedly commissioned for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos , the superyacht is a three-masted schooner built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. The yacht is the world’s largest sailing yacht and the longest yacht built in the Netherlands. The yacht was constructed at Oceanco’s Alblasserdam facilities and later moved to Rotterdam where she waited to complete sea trials at a dock in Eemhaven.

The yacht was delivered to Mallorca in April 2023. The price of Koru has never been disclosed. She is expected to have a gross tonnage of 3300 GT. The yacht is powered by kinetic energy generated by the sails, but like most sailing yachts, she will have engine power as well.

She will join five other Oceanco yachts measuring over 100 metres and ten other superyachts built in the Netherlands measuring over 100 metres.

Koru main features

Koru has a navy hull, red bootstripe, and double-deck wooden coach house. Her profile is characterised by a long bowsprit and a classic canoe stern which will provide enhanced privacy while the yacht is in port. There is also a sizeable dip pool visible on the aft, as well as a crow’s nest on the mizzenmast.

Koru and the De Hef bridge

In 2021, the yacht was the subject of considerable controversy when it emerged that the historic Koningshaven Bridge, also known by the name De Hef, would need to be dismantled to allow the masts to pass under. However, in August 2022, one of the yacht’s masts was seen being transported along the Nieuwe Maas to be stepped elsewhere and the bridge remained untouched. The height of the mainmast is thought to be between 65 and 85 metres.

Koru's secondary yacht

Koru will be accompanied by a support vessel which is thought to be built by Damen Yachting, another Dutch yachtbuilder, which specialises in ocean-going shadow vessels and explorer yachts This yacht will be used to carry toys, tenders and additional crew.

In 2019, there were a number of rumours speculating that Lürrsen’s 136 metre Flying Fox was built for Jeff Bezos; however an Amazon spokesperson refuted the claims.

Her power comes from two MTU diesel engines. She can accommodate up to 18 guests in 9 staterooms, with 36 crew members. She has a gross tonnage of 3493.0 GT and a 16.95 m beam.

The naval architecture was developed by Lateral Naval Architects (6 other superyachts architected) and Dykstra Naval Architects (28 other superyachts architected), and the interior of the yacht was designed by Mlinaric, Henry & Zervudachi , who has 4 other superyacht interiors designed in the BOAT Pro database - she is built with a Teak deck, a Steel hull, and Aluminium superstructure.

KORU is in the top 5% by LOA in the world. She is one of 4 sailing yachts longer than 100m.

KORU is currently sailing under the Cayman Islands flag, the 2nd most popular flag state for superyachts with a total of 1413 yachts registered. The yacht has also been at the center of massive, worldwide controversy. Back in February 2022, Oceanco requested that a centuries-old bridge in the port city of Rotterdam be partially dismantled in order to get the behemoth out and onto the high seas. The masts, which are the same height as the Great Pyramid of Giza, simply exceeded the bridge’s 131-foot clearance and thus prevented Koru from passing under. Rotterdammers were none too pleased and threatened to pelt the yacht with rotten eggs . The request was subsequently denied, and the yacht was instead discreetly towed through Rotterdam without its mast.

The designers behind the yacht’s interior and exterior are yet to be named, but it’s clear that she’s a timeless and elegant cruiser. Koru , which is a Māori for “new beginnings,” features a sleek black hull and white superstructure. She also sports a large pool on the aft deck and a number of plush alfresco lounges.

The epic design isn’t able to accommodate a helicopter, however, as the soaring masts make it too unsafe to land. As a result, Bezos commissioned a second yacht to hold his toys and tenders. Christened Wingman, the custom 246-footer is Damen’s largest support vessel to date. It’s a good match for monumental Koru , then.

127m sailing yacht KORU successfully delivered by Oceanco

Commissioned by entrepreneur and Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos, the 3-masted 127m (416ft) schooner KORU , known throughout the build as Project Y721, has been successfully delivered by Oceanco . 

Boasting a striking black hull with a distinctive red stripe running along her waterline, sailing yacht KORU’s exterior styling mirrors a traditional schooner style with an elongated bowsprite and canoe stern. She reportedly takes her design cues from  Lürssen 's 93m (304ft) sailing yacht EOS , thought to be inspired by the entrepreneur’s visits to this yacht in previous years. 

Although much of her build has been shrouded in secrecy, Oceanco's newest yacht is understood to have an internal volume of 3,300 GT and will undoubtedly offer a wealth of luxurious accommodation and amenities.

KORU offers the last word in innovative design

While her design team has yet to be confirmed, we know the 127m yacht features an aft dip pool, a further Jacuzzi on her flybridge, and multiple areas for relaxing across her open decks. 

The sailing yacht will be supported by the 75m (247ft) Damen yacht ABEONA , which was delivered in February this year. Damen Yachting 's largest-ever support yacht ABEONA  holds the great responsibility of carrying KORU’s larger toys, including a submarine and a helicopter. 

Some say that superyacht KORU is now the world's largest sailing yacht, but this depends on whether you call Nobiskrug’s 143m (469ft) sailing yacht A a sailing yacht. Some would argue she is a sail-assisted motor yacht , yet others claim her to be the largest sailing yacht in the world, including her builder Nobiskrug who states Sailing Yacht A “is the largest of her kind.”

Whether you believe her to be the largest or second-largest sailing yacht in the world, KORU is guaranteed to head-turn wherever she goes. 

She departed Oceanco's facilities on April 6 and has now passed Gibraltar, cruising underway at a speed of 13 knots.

Koru, la barca a vela più grande del mondo, lunga 127 metri e larga 16 , da qualche giorno è comparsa a Rotterdam, dopo essere stata trasferita dalla sede di Oceanco ad Alblasserdam ( senza che fosse necessario smontare lo storico ponte Koningshaven ). La barca è stata appena immatricolata alle isole Cayman e, anche se dai registri risulta di proprietà di Trident Maple CI LTD, si dice appartenga a Jeff Bezos .

Koru : il megayacht del nuovo inizio di Jeff Bezos

Il nome Koru deriva dalla cultura māori  e si tratta di una forma a spirale ricavata dal profilo naturale della Felce d’Argento, una pianta che nella cultura Māori simboleggia nuova vita, crescita, forza e pace . Forse un riferimento alla nuova vita del suo presunto proprietario, che nel 2019 ha divorziato dalla ex moglie MacKenzie Scott, cedendole il 4% delle sue azioni di Amazon, rendendola così la terza donna più ricca d’america (35esima al mondo).

Tutti i segreti della barca a vela di Jeff Bezos

1. come un campo da calcio… + iva.

Con una lunghezza di 417 piedi (127 metri) , la barca a vela di Jeff Bezos non ha eguali. Per capire le proporzioni, è circa il 20% più lunga di un campo da calcio a 11 . O grande come 10 autobus di linea, se preferite. Surclassa, di molto, il Sea Cloud, che con i suoi 109,5 metri di lunghezza è diventata l’ex-barca a vela più lunga al mondo!

2. La barca dei record

Il megayacht di Bezos è anche un record per l’olandese Oceanco , specializzata nella costruzione di “giganti del mare” (uno degli ultimi lo splendido Black Pearl, 106,7 m di lunghezza, a cui il design di Koru si ispira): non aveva mai realizzato una barca così grande. Che, dati alla mano, è anche il più grande yacht da diporto costruito in Olanda .

3. Koru costa pochissimo (per Jeff Bezos) 

C’è sempre molta riservatezza intorno al costo di questi oggetti. Secondo le voci più informate Jeff Bezos avrebbe speso 500 milioni di dollari per Koru. Può sembrare tantissimo, ma sono “bruscolini” per un uomo che ha un patrimonio stimato di 144 miliardi di dollari ed è la terza persona più ricca al mondo (dopo Elon Musk e Bernard Arnault)!

4. Quanto costa mantenerla

Considerato che Koru  avrà un equipaggio di 40 persone e stimati i costi di ormeggio e manutenzione, il New York Post ha calcolato che il signor Amazon dovrà sborsare 25 milioni di dollari  all’anno.

5. Tender di 75 m (con elicottero)

La barca a vela di Jeff Bezos Bezos ha tre ponti, di cui uno con piscina. E fin qui, quasi tutto normale per una barca di tali dimensioni. Ma quello che stupisce è il tender, o meglio, la barca di supporto, costruita nel cantiere olandese Damen Yachts: lunga 75 metri è dotata di piattaforma di atterraggio per elicotteri . La fidanzata di Bezos, Lauren Sanchez (che pare abbia influiti molto sulla scelta del tycoon di farsi la barca a vela), ama volare.

6. Gli interni “copiati”?

Si dice che per gli interni Bezos si sia lasciato ispirare da quelli visti sul megayacht Eos del miliardario statunitense (e marito della stilista Diane von Fürstenberg) Barry Diller: varato nel 2006 e costruito dai cantieri Lurssen, Eos è lungo “solo” 93 metri: con scafo e sovrastruttura in alluminio, ha un baglio massimo di 13,50 metri, un pescaggio che arriva a 5,50 metri e un dislocamento di 1.500 tonnellate di stazza lorda.

7. Doppia prua

Della barca, di un colore nero scintillante, in acciaio e carbonio, colpiscono gli slanci pazzeschi di poppa e prua e le linee classiche, in un periodo in cui il design va sempre di più verso dritti di prua e poppa verticali. Strana la soluzione con una specie di “doppia prua”. 

Attenzione, una doppia prua ben diversa da quella che si è già vista su alcune navi e persino su una barca a motore di 12 metri – il Canelli 39 Revolutio -, ovvero una doppia prua sfalsata e giacente sullo stesso asse che permette di ridurre l’attrito e la resistenza al moto quando l’unità viaggia a basse velocità e che fuoriesce dall’acqua in assetto planante.  Nel caso della barca di Bezos, la scelta pare essere dettata dalla volontà di avere una grande “delfiniera” integrata nello scafo.

8. Fa 30 nodi!

La velocità massima della barca a vela di Jeff Bezos è di oltre 30 nodi  a vela e 18 nodi a motore. La barca disloca oltre 3.000 tonnellate. Sono 6 (o 7) le cabine con una suite armatoriale posizionata a prua che equivale ad un appartamento di almeno 250 metri quadrati. Altrettanto mostruosa la superficie velica stimata in 3.500 metri quadrati.

9. Ecopropulsione

La barca a vela di Jeff Bezos ha una motorizzazione elettrica allo stato dell’arte e le eliche funzioneranno come idrogeneratori per ricaricare le batterie mentre la barca naviga a vela (come accade già con i sistemi tipo Servoprop di OceanVolt).

C’è qualcosa che non torna nell’articolo, si fa riferimento al DynaRig ma in foto compare un tre alberi tradizionale, con sartie, crocette ed alberi “normali”. Un paio di anni fa si vociferava del DynaRig per la barca di Bezos, ma poi i fatti hanno smentito le voci ..tuttavia pare abbiate riciclato un vecchio articolo ribadendo quel concetto!

Sono d’accordo l’armo è tradizionale

Dall'Olanda sta per arrivare lo yacht più costoso del mondo ed entrerà prestissimo a far parte della già immensa collezione di Jeff Bezos, padrone di Amazon. L'imprenditore, con un patrimonio stimato di circa 121 miliardi di euro.

In realtà, qualcosa di più grande, folle e lussuoso della Koru , l'imbarcazione di proprietà del fondatore di Amazon, esiste. Pangeos, lo yacht a forma di immensa tartaruga della lunghezza di 550 metri però è tutt'ora solo un progetto non diventato realtà, per questo per ora il magnate statunitense deve accontentarsi di un "cucciolo" di 127 metri. "Koru" è un nome che deriva dalla lingua Maori e significa "nuovo inizio" . L'imbarcazione a vela somiglia molto ad un altro esemplare di nave appartenente a Bezos, la famosa "Perla Nera".

Grandissimo e lussuoso

Koru è uno yacht a vela di 127 metri di lunghezza. Il costruttore è l'olandese Oceanco , che ha terminato il suo capolavoro di ingegneria navale proprio in questi giorni. Al 31esimo posto degli yacht più grandi mai costruiti , si compone di tre alberi con scafo in acciaio e sovrastruttura in alluminio. Sarà alimentato dall'energia cinetica generata dalle vele , ma come la maggior parte delle imbarcazioni a vela, avrà anche un motore . 

Koru ha uno scafo marino, una striscia di bagagliaio rossa e una rimessa in legno a doppio ponte. Il suo profilo è caratterizzato da un lungo bompresso e da una classica poppa a canoa che garantisce una maggiore privacy quando lo yacht è in porto. A poppa è visibile anche una grande vasca per le immersioni e un nido di corvo sull'albero di mezzana. Non ci sono per ora dati ufficiali, ma si ritiene che l'altezza dell'albero maestro sia compresa tra 65 e 85 metri .

Lo yacht è stato costruito presso gli stabilimenti Oceanco di Alblasserdam e successivamente trasferito a Rotterdam, dove ha atteso di completare le prove in mare presso il bacino di Eemhaven. Sconosciuto per ora il prezzo, anche se secondo alcune stime dovrebbe aggirarsi intorno ai 500 milioni di euro .

Su alcuni dettagli, vista la segretezza del mezzo, non si hanno conferme, ma su altri invece abbiamo delle certezze. Il valore di Koru dovrebbe aggirarsi sui 500 milioni di dollari , è uno dei velieri più grandi al mondo e il fondatore di Amazon lo ha in un certo senso dedicato alla sua nuova compagna , Lauren Sanchez. Lo sappiamo perché la polena del veliero (che ha una superficie velica immensa) rappresenta proprio lei, il suo viso e il suo busto.

Le curiosità più assurde di Koru

Koru è stato visto più volte nel Mediterraneo, come per esempio a Maiorca o a largo della Sardegna . Per i paparazzi è un obiettivo ideale: a bordo salgono personaggi illustri della politica e del business, quindi ogni foto ai ponti può catturare un vip eccezionalmente importante .

La curiosità più incredibile di questo veliero lungo ben 127 metri (più di un campo da calcio)? Che non si muove mai come imbarcazione singola. Mai. Ad accompagnare Koru c'è sempre una nave di supporto , che funziona in simbiosi con il veliero di Bezos. Si chiama "Abeona" ed è anch'essa una mega imbarcazione da sogno: ha una pista di atterraggio per elicotteri (oltre a un elicottero, ovviamente), stanze da letto aggiuntive, equipaggio di supporto e grandi saloni di lusso. E di curiosità incredibili ce ne sono tante altre, come per esempio che Koru è l'unico yacht da miliardari di queste dimensioni che può navigare esclusivamente a vela .

E che vela. La tecnologia degli alberi scelta da Bezos è tra le più lussuose e costose: si tratta di alberi "furler in-boom" capaci cioè di immagazzinare le grandi vele nella parte inferiore dell'albero. Il peso è enorme circa 900 chilogrammi , ma questa soluzione rende possibile tenere il ponte libero da cime. Così da godere di uno spazio esterno immenso .

Chi è Jeff Bezos

Jeff Bezos ha 59 anni , e la sua compagna Lauren Sanchez ne ha 53 anni: passano le vacanze su questa meraviglia della nautica e lo fanno da protagonisti: tengono il timone , per esempio, o passano il tempo con il capitano (di cui non si conosce l'identità) nella cabina di comando. Lo mostrano diverse foto rubate da paparazzi dotati di obiettivi particolarmente performanti . E poi Bezos e la compagna fanno gite in elicottero, usano le moto d'acqua in dotazione dello yacht e si godono una grande piscina esterna.

Com'è noto il fondatore di Blue Origin e Amazon è tra le persone più ricche del mondo. Con un patrimonio di oltre 200 miliardi di dollari per anni è stato considerato il più ricco in assoluto, prima di essere scalzato dalla prima posizione dal fondatore di Tesla Elon Musk .

Secondo Forbes le spese che dovrà sostenere Bezos per la gestione di Koru e della nave di supporto sono di circa 25 milioni di dollari all'anno . Una vera fortuna, ma consona alle tasche del fondatore di Amazon.

Gli interni di Koru

Poche navi sono tanto lussuose come Koru. Ma nessun fotografo autorizzato è mai salito a bordo e per questo non sappiamo ogni dettagli degli interni. Ma sappiamo che il mega yacht di Jeff Bezos ha suite stupende , piscine con idromassaggio e spazi progettati per il relax all'aperto. A bordo lavorano 40 membri dell'equipaggio, ma il numero massimo di ospiti è 18 : il che significa che ci saranno almeno 2 membri dell'equipaggio a servire ogni ospite.
