EXCLUSIVE: Ghost Rider's New, Cronenberg-Like Villain Is Part Man, Part Machine

CBR can exclusively reveal solicit information and Björn Barends' cover art for Ghost Rider #9, which provides a new look at a deadly Marvel villain.

CBR can exclusively reveal cover and solicit information for Ghost Rider #9, which will see Johnny Blaze go up against his new, truly terrifying creature named Exhaust.

Ghost Rider #9 comes from writer Benjamin Percy, artist Cory Smith and cover artist Björn Barends. The synopsis for the issue reads, "THE CREATURE KNOWN AS EXHAUST! Johnny Blaze has finally been exorcized of his demonic tumor, but it lives on as something new and sentient, a dark mirror of both him and his bike...a creature known as EXHAUST. As Johnny and Talia Warroad head toward Chicago — a city known for the blood of its slaughterhouses, a city they believe is central to the Shadow Country conspiracy — they’ll be pursued by Exhaust and the dark forces he manifests."

RELATED: Marvel's Ghost Rider Takes On An All-New Form

Exhaust will make his official debut in Ghost Rider #7, as revealed by Bloody Disgusting . The villain -- who looks as if he's come straight out of a David Cronenberg film -- is born out of a demonic parasite that previously lived within Johnny Blaze following the events of Ghost Rider #5 and 6. Releasing Oct. 7, the synopsis for Ghost Rider #7 reads, "SHADOW HUNTERS! There's a new splinter group within the F.B.I. that is charged with quelling the rise in supernatural activity in the country, and it's helmed by Agent Talia Warroad, who aims to enlist the dangerous power of the drifter named Johnny Blaze!"

Ghost Rider is Facing the Marvel Universe's Demons

Johnny Blaze has had to face a number of ungodly, horrific monsters throughout the course of the ongoing Ghost Rider thus far. Ghost Rider #3 paired him off against a Stephen King-like semi with no visible driver. In Ghost Rider #4, Johnny traveled to a circus run by undead, nightmarish creatures, while the series' fifth issue saw him engage in a road race with a number of recognizable Marvel characters. While Johnny was infected by a demonic parasite in Ghost Rider #5, Wolverine removed the entity through the use of his new Hellfire claws in Ghost Rider #6.

In a CBR exclusive interview , Percy spoke on the horror influence he wanted to incorporate into Ghost Rider . "Horror is my favorite genre," he explained. My brain is hard-wired for it. You can see that in my novels and short stories. You can see that in my work at AWA in Year Zero and Devil's Highway . That dark aesthetic and those nasty tendencies tend to creep into my other work at the big two (even on titles like Wolverine or X-Force) like black centipedes. This is the first time I've been assigned an actual horror series by Marvel or DC, so I'm unleashing my beastliness. I keep hearing from fans, writers, and even other editors, 'I can't believe they let you do that,' in response to some savage sequence I planted in a script. My response is monstrous laughter."

Ghost Rider #9 releases Dec. 7 from Marvel.

With Blackheart in the background, Exhaust as the new bad, and the femme fatale Talia Warroad sticking around front and center, it's no wonder that Percy has cornered a monopoly on the horror section of the Marvel Universe. Though it would be nice to see Man-Thing, Blade, and a host of others come back around for a dedicated one-shot or two for the Hallow's Eve season, "Shadowhunters comes a few weeks early for Devil's Night, but even though a good scare carries a somewhat orgasmic sensation, in no way does this premature release kill the momentum of Percy and Smith's sinisterly salacious run. As metal as this book as been through six issues, Ghost Rider #7 might be its grimiest yet, introducing one of the wildest villains the Spirit of Vengeance has ever seen. Read Full Review

Ghost Rider #7 is a serviceable issue that's more setup than story. Blaze and Warroad are simply moved into place as partners to face what's coming while Blackheart creates a new lieutenant that may or may not look cool, depending on your affinity for the Power Rangers. But for these two plot points, you could skip this issue and not miss anything. Read Full Review

This continues to be a great ghost rider run. It's really gruesome and brutal but I love how it takes time to develop the story and characters. Benjamin Percy is a fantastic writer

To me, it feels like this volume is finally kicking off the story it's always wanted to tell, and I really appreciate the clarity. Some of this issue's art is outstanding, too.

It could have used more action, but it kept my interest. This run has been good. It just needs to start taking that next step.

10 gruesome ghost rider villains way too r-rated for the mcu.

Ghost Rider is perhaps the darkest antihero in Marvel, and his villains certainly match. Here are 10 Ghost Rider villains too gruesome for the MCU!

  • Ghost Rider's villains are too intense for the average MCU audience, with disturbing imagery that only hardcore horror fans would be comfortable with.
  • The Demon Town, Demon Parasite, Motel Demon, and other gruesome villains are psychologically disturbing and visually horrific, making them unsuitable for the family-friendly MCU.
  • Talia Warroad's powers to see dead people and pure evil would have to be watered-down to appear in anything that's not an R-rated film, making her character unrecognizable in the MCU.

With the expansion of the MCU ’s supernatural side with projects like Moon Knight, Werewolf By Night, and the upcoming Blade, it won’t be long before Ghost Rider is thrown into the mix as well. While it’s true that the live-action versions of Ghost Rider fans have seen in previous films/shows do exist in the MCU multiverse, the character still needs to be brought into MCU-proper, and it seems like that will happen sooner than later.

The only issue with Ghost Rider is that, in some cases, the villains he faces are just a bit too intense for the average MCU audience. While the MCU is no stranger to topics involving death and violence, there’s a difference between a badass fight scene between a hero and a villain, and disturbing images of hellish terror only hardcore horror fans would feel comfortable casually viewing - and a lot of Ghost Rider villains fall into the latter category. Here are the 10 most gruesome Ghost Rider villains who are way too R-rated for the MCU!

All 25 Versions of Ghost Rider, Ranked From Weakest To Most Powerful

10 demon town.

The town of Hayden’s Falls is a picturesque community where everyone is happy, and nothing bad ever happens at all. At least, that’s what they want Johnny Blaze to believe. Debuting at the start of the current Ghost Rider run in Ghost Rider Vol. 10 #1 by Benjamin Percy and Cory Smith, Hayden’s Falls is a fake town created by a horde of demons led by Blackheart to keep Johnny Blaze trapped in a state of blissful stasis, thus neutralizing the Ghost Rider.

When the veil comes down, it’s revealed that every neighbor, friend, and pet in the town was a hideous demon, twisting normal, functional, and happy family life into a nightmarish hellscape of paranoia and murder. The Demon Town is psychologically disturbing and visually horrific, making it way too intense for the MCU.

9 Demon Parasite

An integral part of the ‘Demon Town’ plan working, the Demon Parasite is a resident of hell that burrowed itself deep inside Johnny’s brain. Not only does it cloud his judgment and make him question what’s real, but it also torments him by revealing itself in little ways before disappearing completely, adding to Johnny’s ever-growing torment and paranoia.

When the Demon Parasite fully reveals itself in Ghost Rider #6 by Benjamin Percy and Brent Peeples, it’s shown to basically be Marvel Comics’ version of John Carpenter’s The Thing , making both its form and function an utter horrorshow the likes of which would not be appropriate for a family-friendly MCU project.

8 Motel Demon

This entry is perhaps the most disturbing on this list. In Ghost Rider #2 by Benjamin Percy, Corey Smith, and Brent Peeples, Johnny has escaped the Demon Town and is staying at a motel called the Cave Inn. Built at the base of a mountain, the motel had hidden passageways that not only connected all the rooms through a secret tunnel, but led deep into the mountain’s cave systems as well. While staying there, Johnny quickly learned that the motel owner was abducting people, bringing them deep into the caves, and sacrificing them to a demonic ‘Old One’ whose name could not be translated into any human language.

This demon ate a father in front of his wife and young daughter, all after the motel owner watched them in their room through a two-way mirror until finally abducting them. This storyline is like a mix between The Ritual and Barbarian , meaning it’s not suitable for the MCU in the slightest.

7 Demon Circus

Actually, perhaps this one is a tad more disturbing than the last, as it takes a previously established villain (who was pretty goofy and harmless) and twisted him into absolute nightmare fuel. Ghost Rider #4 by Benjamin Percy and Cory Smith introduced readers to a disturbing new version of the classic Avengers villain Ringmaster. Ringmaster was arguably akin to a silver age Joker, meaning he was a creepy trickster, but never got up to anything too horrible. Here, however, the Ringmaster and his and his Circus of Crime are invading towns no one has ever heard of (especially not the Avengers) and hypnotizing people to do dangerous stunts one would normally see at a circus, though with none of the training required to do them safely.

With his demonic upgrade, the Ringmaster became a horrific parody of his former self with the added ability to take the corpses of his hypnotized victims and combine them into a sentient amalgamation of flesh and bone, one strong enough to fight Ghost Rider himself. Everything about this is terrifyingly gruesome, and none of it belongs in the MCU.

6 Highway Killer

This entry is a bit different from the others, as it’s not a demon or a supernatural entity of any kind, it’s a serial killer - one who operates in the shadow of a demon. In Ghost Rider #3 by Benjamin Percy, Corey Smith, and Brent Peeples, Ghost Rider finds himself on a forgotten highway that can’t be found on GPS, and for good reason. This stretch of road belongs to a demon-possessed truck that murders people by running their cars off the road. One man discovered this dark corner of the United States and decided to live in the shadow of this demon, becoming a serial killer who’d never be caught, as he frames every murder he commits as a grisly car accident that would likely never even be investigated.

This villain is a bit too real for the fantastical MCU, as it’s just someone who preys on the unsuspecting to fulfill their own murderous fantasies.

5 Animal Zombies

While these ‘villains’ are probably the most harmless on this list, this entry is easily one of the more upsetting. In Ghost Rider #8 by Benjamin Percy and Cory Smith, Ghost Rider is closing in on Blackheart and his villainous schemes to take over the world. While riding towards Blackheart’s presumed location, Ghost Rider is attacked by a horde of zombified animals. While he dispatches them fairly quickly and without much trouble, the sight of bears, wolves, and deer contorting and mutilating their own bodies to get at Ghost Rider and his allies is undeniably upsetting.

No younger audience member would want to see this in a normally family-friendly MCU film, as these villains would be shocking to see for anyone not prepared for an R-rated horror movie.

4 Dentist Demon, Church Demon, Toilet Demon

In Ghost Rider #10 by Benjamin Percy and Cory Smith, Blackheart’s plan to take over the world takes a major step forward, as three powerful and influential people are possessed simultaneously. One of them was possessed at the dentist’s office, another in a church, and the third in a bathroom stall. Each demon was more grotesque than the last, and all of them attacked in areas that are generally considered unsettling or scary, even though these are areas people are supposed to feel safe and secure.

Deep-seated fears experienced by practically everyone in modern society are taken to the extreme by these Ghost Rider villains, which means they’re probably not the best bad guys to include in an MCU film.

3 Church of the Flayed

The Church of the Flayed debuted in Ghost Rider #16 by Benjamin Percy and Chris Campana, and there is absolutely no way these guys will make it in the MCU. The story of this supernatural cult began with one member who wished to be the last. This mysterious person wore a jacket with a hood, and underneath that hood, they didn’t have a face. More accurately, there was no skin on their face. This person encountered three separate Ghost Riders, stole each of their faces, and temporarily used the power of the Spirit of Vengeance to kill every member of the Church of the Flayed until this person was the last one.

While this ‘villain’ returned the Ghost Riders’ powers after they used them, they’re still a horrifying entity that belonged to an even more horrifying religion. The Church of the Flayed worshiped an ancient ‘Skin God’, and practiced their worship by flaying themselves alive, only clinging to life by the cursed grace of their twisted deity.

This villain would be a cool one to bring to live action if the MCU allowed for an R-rated Ghost Rider movie, but would be far too grotesque to appear in anything that’s supposed to be suitable for all ages. Exhaust debuted in Ghost Rider #7, but technically made his first appearance in Ghost Rider #1, as Exhaust is the final form of the Demon Parasite. After the parasite was violently exercised from Johnny’s body by Wolverine, it scurried inside a corpse lying nearby and reshaped the dead human body into a horrifying form of flesh and machine with the ability to create demonic exhaust that had the power to transform its victims into skinless demon puppets.

A really cool villain and the perfect antithesis of Ghost Rider (indeed, it copied almost everything about him during its time as Johnny’s brain parasite), but a bit too intense for a non-R-rated MCU project.

1 Talia Warroad

A former member of the Cult of Mephisto, Talia Warroad is currently on a mission of redemption, using her inherently mystical abilities to fight alongside Ghost Rider against the forces of evil she once worshiped. Talia Warroad was born with a sixth sense , allowing her to not only see dead people, but also the physical manifestation of pure evil that’s metaphysically present across the entire world. She was born with this ability, which is why she used to be a ‘villain’ who committed heinous acts of violence in Mephisto’s name (as revealed in Ghost Rider #18-19).

What’s interesting about Talia is that she’s a character who could probably never be adapted in the MCU, even as an ally of Ghost Rider. Due to the very nature of her power, Talia would have to be watered-down to an unrecognizable degree to appear in anything that’s not an R-rated film, as the stuff she sees is psychologically horrific and unspeakably disturbing (which, as it happens, is why she’s the coolest addition to Ghost Rider lore to date).

While there are certainly other villains throughout Ghost Rider’s many decades of publication history that are undeniably terrifying, they don’t hold a candle to the ones featured in Ghost Rider ’s latest volume. These are not only the most recent bad guys the character has faced, but are also easily the most gruesome, making these 10 Ghost Rider villains way too R-rated for the MCU .

The Walking Dead Star Becomes The MCU's Ghost Rider In Red-Hot Fan Art

  • The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus has been fan-cast as Ghost Rider in the MCU for several years.
  • Fan art depicts Norman Reedus as Johnny Blaze's Ghost Rider, showing how powerful he would look in the role.
  • Norman Reedus has expressed interest in playing Ghost Rider, and this fan-cast has been endorsed by The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang.

A popular star of The Walking Dead has been imagined as Marvel Studios' Ghost Rider in some brilliant new MCU fan art. The Spirit of Vengeance has been a heavily rumored addition to the MCU for several years, particularly after Gabriel Luna's debut as Robbie Reyes' Ghost Rider in Marvel Television's Agents of SHIELD . Speculation has been rising for the antihero's introduction, as Marvel Studios has been focused more on supernatural storylines, grounded narratives and darker material, especially with the implementation of the Marvel Spotlight banner. With Ghost Rider's MCU debut expected to be imminent, fan-casts have named many strong actors for the role, including The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus.

Famous for roles in The Boondock Saints, 8MM and American Gangster , but perhaps best known for his role of Daryl Dixon in AMC's The Walking Dead and its spinoff Daryl Dixon , Norman Reedus has been one of the most convincing and popular fan-casts for Ghost Rider in the MCU . In December 2023, 21XFOUR shared fan art depicting Reedus as Johnny Blaze's Ghost Rider in the MCU.

The art depicts Norman Reedus with Johnny Blaze's trademark leather jacket and flaming chain weapon, looking to be astride his burning motorcycle. The art proves just how powerful Reedus would look as Ghost Rider , and the actor has expressed interest in assuming this role .

Marvel's Blade Could Finally Be Ghost Rider's Ticket To The MCU

What norman reedus has said about joining the mcu.

Norman Reedus has been fan-cast as Johnny Blaze's Ghost Rider for several years, prompting the actor himself to comment on the rumors of his casting. During a 2021 interview with Comicbook.com , Reedus stated, "I want to play Ghost Rider... I want a fire skull. I want my face to turn into a fire skull and whip a chain around. That would be great." Reedus expressed interest in reuniting with The Walking Dead co-star Jon Bernthal, who is set to return as Frank Castle's Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again , and Reedus could also cross paths with The Walking Dead's Danai Gurira, who has portrayed the MCU's Okoye since 2018's Black Panther .

Even as far back as 2018's Walker Stalker Con during the "An Evening with Norman & Jeffrey" event, referring to Norman Reedus and The Walking Dead co-star Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Reedus has noted his interest in playing the MCU's Ghost Rider . Reedus noted that "Ghost Rider would be fun, Silver Surfer would be fun," (via Comicbook.com ), and The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang even endorsed this casting in a 2021 exchange on X . Since Norman Reedus himself has a passion for motorcycles, there may be no MCU role better for him than stunt motorcyclist-turned-superhero Ghost Rider , though only time will tell if this fan-casting comes to fruition.

TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — A drone attacked a skyscraper in central Moscow early Tuesday for the second time in around 48 hours, damaging the building’s facade and further underscoring the Russian capital’s vulnerability. Russian authorities accused Ukraine of staging the assault.

An adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy tweeted that Moscow “is rapidly getting used to a full-fledged war,” without confirming or denying Kyiv’s involvement.

Russian officials have claimed that the repeated attacks on the capital region reflect failures in Ukraine’s counteroffensive to recapture Russian-occupied territory. Zelenskyy said over the weekend that “the war is gradually coming back to Russian territory,” but he stopped short of taking responsibility.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said it shot down two Ukrainian drones outside Moscow and jammed another, sending it crashing into a skyscraper and damaging the building’s facade. The attack happened in a business district of high-rise office buildings known as Moscow City, west of the Kremlin.

The Crimean Peninsula's balmy beaches have been vacation spots for Russian czars and has hosted history-shaking meetings of world leaders. And it has been the site of ethnic persecutions, forced deportations and political repression. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the drone crashed into the same building that was damaged Sunday in a similar attack. IQ-Quarter, located 7.2 kilometers (4.5 miles) from the Kremlin, houses multiple government agencies, including the headquarters of the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Digital Development and Communications, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The mayor said the attack on Tuesday did not result in any casualties.

It wasn’t clear why the same building was hit twice in a row. In both attacks, the Russian military said the drones that hit the skyscraper were jammed before crashing, which elicited questions from even the staunchest supporters of the Kremlin.

Margarita Simonyan, chief editor of the state-funded TV channel RT, said in a social media post that “a drone hitting the same tower for the second time in a row, where three federal ministries are located, at least requires explaining the comments that the electronic warfare downed them all.”

Asked about how protected the Russian capital is, given that supposedly jammed drones hit the same building, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov redirected the question to the Defense Ministry, saying only that “the threat exists and measures are being taken.”

Sobyanin said the drone that struck the building Tuesday hit the 21st floor, one of the floors housing the Economic Development ministry. Photos from the scene showed several panels of glass missing, exposing the charred insides of the building. According to the mayor, 150 square meters (about 1,600 square feet) of the building’s glass facade were damaged.

Russian news agency Interfax cited Darya Levchenko, an adviser to the economic development minister, as saying that the ministry’s staff worked from home Tuesday while damage to the office was assessed.

The Russian military also said Ukrainian forces tried to attack two of its warships in the Black Sea, using maritime drones. Three drones targeted two patrol vessels, Sergei Kotov and Vasily Bykov, 340 kilometers (210 miles) southwest of the Russian-controlled city of Sevastopol on the Crimean Peninsula , the Defense Ministry reported. All three drones were destroyed, the report said.

The governor of the Sevastopol region, Mikhail Razvozhaev, said a drone was shot down about 10 kilometers (6 miles) east of the city on Tuesday evening, causing a brush fire.

The attacks on Moscow and Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed from Ukraine in 2014, follow a deadly Russian missile strike on Kryvyi Rih , Zelenskyy’s hometown in central Ukraine.

Monday’s strike partially destroyed a residential building and killed seven people. Dozens more were wounded.

Russia’s land and sea border with Ukraine spans more than 2,200 kilometers (1,400 miles), meaning that much of the line separating the two countries is not covered by defense radar, which creates an opening for drones.

“Depending on where they are launched from, if there is a way to get through the initial line of defenses, then there will probably be a very poor ability to track them in real time,” said professor Justin Bronk, an expert in military air power and technology at the Royal United Services Institute, a defense think tank in London.

The most advanced defense systems around Moscow “are typically optimized for ballistic missile defense and are looking at targets and objects which are coming in at extremely high speeds and from very high angles,” Bronk said.

Unlike ballistic missiles, drones can fly low and slow. That presents a challenge for radar systems, which scan higher altitudes and filter out slow-moving objects such as birds.

In other developments Tuesday, Russian forces attacked Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, with Iranian-made Shahed drones , according to Kharkiv Gov. Oleh Syniehubov.

One drone struck a three-story building at an educational institution in the Saltivka district, partially destroying the top two floors of the building, as well as the roof. No one was inside at the time.

Three more drone strikes hit the area of a sports complex in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kharkiv. A two-story building in the complex was partially damaged, and a 63-year-old security guard was wounded, according to Syniehubov.

Russian forces shelled the city of Kherson and hit a medical facility, according to regional Gov. Roman Mrochko, killing a doctor and wounding one nurse.

“A young, talented doctor was killed, who was on his first day of work after internship. It was his first working day, which ended without even starting,” Tetiana Karchevych, Kherson region health department head, said at the site of the attack.

Ukraine’s presidential office reported Tuesday morning that at least 12 civilians had been killed in the country over the previous 24 hours, and 104 people injured.

The office reported that Monday’s attack on Kryvyi Rih killed seven people, including a 10-year-old girl, making it one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in recent weeks. Russian rockets struck a residential high-rise building and a university building in the attack, which also wounded 81 people, including seven children.

Hanna Arhirova in Kyiv, Ukraine, and Yuras Karmanau in Berlin, contributed to this report.
