Platform: PC PS4 Xbox One PS5 XSX|S Switch  Release Date: March 30, 2023

Steam  |  Playstation  |  Xbox  |  Nintendo

For ages, sailors would tell tales of the high seas and the dangers that lurked beneath the waves. But many of these tales were far-fetched, exaggerated, or simply not true. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t monsters of the deep, and in  Dredge,  you will get up close and personal with many of them.

Your journey will start as a simple fisherman trying to make their way and learn the truth about the islands they fish within. But once you dare to brave the darkened waters at night, you’ll see just how many “bigger fish” there are out there and how small your boat feels in comparison.

So you best start believing in monster fish stories. You’re in one.

  • Developer: Supermassive Games
  • Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment

Supermassive Games has already a nice track record when it comes to horror titles as the development studio brought out an iconic hit for the PlayStation 4 in the form of Until Dawn. The video game series has received a couple of spinoff titles of its own though now the developers are looking at a new trilogy of titles set to also be horror titles.

The developers are calling it The Dark Anthology with the first title being Man of Medan. Much like the Until Dawn IP, players will be controlling a cast of characters that may or may not make it through the story depending on your actions. This time around players will be diving into the sea with a group of friends in search of sunken treasure but it turns out that there’s something else lurking in the depths below.

Outlast 2, by development team Red Barrels, follows similar game mechanics of the first installment of the survival-horror franchise. Players this time around will take on the role of Blake Langermann, an investigative journalist alongside his wife as they uncover clues to a murder of a pregnant woman.

In their journey, Blake and his wife become separated after their helicopter crashes. Much like the last installment, gamers are not suited with the ability to combat the enemies that lurk about. Instead, our protagonist will mostly have to hide and run away from any nearby danger.

However, since Blake is already a cameraman, he is equipped with a more advanced camera that will offer clearer footage, zoom, an audio detection system, and of course night vision. Gamers will still have to hunt down new batteries for the camera when it drains from night vision use just as they did before making it tough to know just when you should put down your camera and when to pick it back up again.

  • Developer: Techland
  • Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment

Dying Light was created under Techland, who was also the developers behind Dead Island and as such there are some clear similarities between the two. However, between the two video game titles, Dying Light certainly carries a more mature tone and bleak world.

The video game follows an agent named Kyle Crane who is tasked with infiltrating a quarantine zone city of Harran which has become infested with a virus turning civilians into ruthless zombies. Interestingly enough, there’s a twist on the day and night cycle in Dying Light. During the day, the zombies are more lethargic and easier to deal with, though once the sun set’s they become more aggressive and harder to escape from.

Developers have also tossed in some parkour elements within the game allowing players to easily traverse the city and its obstacles when fleeing the undead hordes. Combat as well has been changed from the melee focus from what we seen within Dead Island to gunplay, giving players an action-adventure experience.

  • Developer: The Farm 51

Get Even, developed by The Farm 51 and launched in June of 2017, is a survival horror FPS. The video game follows a man named Cole Black who wakes up in an old asylum with no memory other than a fading image of himself attempting to save a young girl from a bomb strapped to her chest.

Through the use of a mysterious device attached to our protagonist’s head, Cole is able to think back and jump into his memory. Players must go through the various memories to solve puzzles and fight his way through hostile enemies as he attempts to uncover just how he ended up in his current situation.

Layers of Fear is a psychological horror video game by developers Bloober Team. The video game follows a painter who is attempting to finish his masterpiece though as you roam the mansion, disturbing secret information begins to bleed out.

This is more of an exploration and puzzle-solving video game with a variety of jump scares littered throughout.

Likewise a DLC campaign was released shortly after called Layers of Fear: Inheritance where gamers take on the role of the painter’s daughter who returns to the old house.

The Evil Within was directed by Resident Evil series creator, Shinji Mikami as the game focuses on Sebastian Castellanos a detective that gets pulled into a distorted world during an investigation. Staying true to the survival horror genre, The Evil Within will have players struggling against a fight with nightmarish creatures while avoiding traps, sneaking around the world and solving complex puzzles.

haunted house games ps4

It did not come as a shock when it was announced that a new installment in The Evil Within franchise would be coming to market. The title takes place three years after the events of the first video game, where Sebastian once again, takes on a new investigation filled with horrifying creatures to face against. However, this investigation touches close to home for Sebastian as he will get the chance to tie up loose ends to his past.

Released in 2017, developers Bloober Team crafted a psychological horror title based around a detective. Within the game, players take on the role of Daniel Lazarski who is a detective with an unique tool. During interrogations, Daniel is able to hack into peoples minds and investigate surroundings memorized by the person.

This is one of those games that is best to go in with as little knowledge as possible due to the length of the game. Players who take the day off to enjoy a game can easily beat this in one sitting in just over five hours, especially if they are going for just the main narrative story.

Dying Light 2: Stay Human will place you in The City, where zombies run wild, and you are trying to figure out your memory problems as you make it by them.

You’ll take missions for various people all over The City to get the answers you seek. Be warned, how you handle them and who you do them for will affect The City in many ways.

As if that wasn’t enough, you’ll need to ward off the zombie infection that is slowly growing within you.

Dying Light 2: Stay Human doesn’t require you to fight all the time, use your parkour skills to bound around the city as you please so you can get to where you want to go.

Outlast is a first-person survival psychological horror title by development team Red Barrels. The game follows a freelance investigative journalist named Miles Upshur who is searching out a remote psychiatric hospital.

However, what Miles finds is not only disturbing but dangerous leaving him to fight for his life. Being more of a survival horror title, players are encouraged to use stealth to their advantage while maneuvering over various obstacles. Likewise, a big portion of the game is based on the use of a night vision camera to see what is around the area. However, limited batteries are required to run the camera forcing players to seek out replacements as they progress through the narrative campaign.

In Little Nightmares, players will be taking on the role of a young girl named Six who had been kidnapped from her home and forced to work at a place known as The Maw, an underwater resort.

The resort caters to the powerful elite, forcing Six to serve their needs. If you desire to feel like you’re in a horror movie, one where your choices will determine your fate, then you must check out The Quarry.

In the game, you’ll play as a group of camp counselors who stay longer than they should have and face the consequences of their actions. Every choice you make, no matter how big or small, will affect one character or another. There are so many ways for the game to end that you’ll want to go back and redo everything to try to get everyone to live.

Look for cards so that you can rewind time and undo some of your paths, and do what it takes to make it through the day.

Until Dawn is a PlayStation 4 exclusive and a horror adventure title. Developed by Supermassive Games, Until Dawn follows a group of eight characters who decide to hold a holiday retreat at a cabin within a fictional mountain resort in western Canada.

However, their holiday retreat quickly turns sour as they learn a psycho killer is on the loose forcing our group of eight to survive until sunrise. If you enjoy choice-based video games then this title will be a must play.

Gamers will be able to control the characters at various points in the narrative while making critical choices along the way. Depending on the choices made will alter the narrative and even result in potential characters not making it through the night.

The Last of Us was such a massively popular video game that it really came to no surprise a sequel would be released into the market. This sequel follows Ellie years after her voyage with Joel and life was seemingly a bit more normal behind protected walls. Everyone had their jobs and roles to keep society going although an event occurs that shakes Ellie to her core. Years after risking her precious life in hopes of doing some good in the world, she is back into action against all odds. We won’t spoil anything here but we will say that this is a different kind of scary game. While there are plenty of creatures, the focus is mainly around hostile factions.

You never know just what is behind each corner and the development team at Naughty Dog did an incredible job at making people feel more human. The fear of having to end someone’s life can weigh on you at times. Hearing their screams, panic, and friends cry out over their sudden loss could really make the game a terrifying adventure of losing grip with humanity. It seems that with each game Naughty Dog really tries to set the bar even higher.

For fans of the horror film franchise Aliens, owning a copy of Alien: Isolation is automatically a must-have. However, if you’re unfamiliar with the film, you can still find some enjoyment from this video game title. Launched back in 2014, developers Creative Assembly has released this survival horror title for a variety of platforms over the years.

In terms of the film franchise, Alien: Isolation is set fifteen years after the events of Alien, where players will take on the role of Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Ellen Ripley who is on an investigation of tracking down the mysterious disappearance of her mother.

Much like the old school survival horror titles, Alien: Isolation has an emphasis on players avoiding the hostile alien enemy. Instead, gamers must rely on some stealth mechanics to maneuver around the game.

Alien: Isolation is a singleplayer journey and while there is a following, it’s unsure if we’ll see a sequel launch. Publishers to the video game, Sega, has stated that they are still considering putting out another title, but it’s unconfirmed if one is actually in the process.

Frictional Games are fantastic developers who know how to create terrifying video games as they previously released Penumbra and Amnesia. Their latest release falls right in line with the past two IP launches. Soma is a survival horror title that puts players into an underwater remote research facility.

Within the game, players take on the role of Simon Jarrett who must uncover the truth behind the facility that’s gone rogue with machines taking on more human characteristics.

If you’re familiar Amnesia, Soma takes on the similar gameplay style in that players will be keen to take a stealthy approach when dealing with the enemy. It’s best to avoid danger when possible while searching for clues and solving puzzles.

  • Developer: Arkane Studios

The 2017 release of Prey from developers Arkane Studios is stated to be an FPS with survival horror elements. This is a futuristic title where players are set on a space station that has been tainted by a hostile alien species. During this exploration journey, gamers will be stepping into the shoes of Morgan Yu who must find a means to get rid of the alien species and escape the station.

You may recall the Prey franchise from when it first launched back in 2006 and it’s worth mentioning that this is not a reboot or remaster. Instead, the developers identify Prey as a reimagining of the IP with a new narrative.

Much of the gameplay will involve exploring the station and solving a few puzzles as you progress.

Indie survival horror title Lone Survivor by developers Superflat games first launched on PC in 2012 though it has since launched on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and the Wii U. This is a very odd and unusual horror title as players control a nameless man stuck within a building after the post-apocalypse has turned most of the world into mindless mutants.

Players embark on the adventure within the 2D world attempting to gather supplies and complete puzzles. However, it becomes clear in the game that the protagonist is having a mental breakdown where the real and hallucinate worlds become a blur. Lone Survivor has a total of five different endings with the Director’s Cut giving players an incentive to go back to replay the game.

Resident Evil is an iconic video game title and one that helped pave the road for future survival horror titles. Currently, the original title of the franchise does not hold up well today though luckily, the development team over at Capcom has released remastered editions over the years.

The latest release was in 2015 where the game received a 1080p resolution along with 5.1 surround sound. Likewise, if you’re not familiar with the days of the original Resident Evil then chances are you won’t like the control scheme. Often considered as “tank controls” Capcom has changed the controls to make movement a bit more fluid with the analog stick.

If you have yet to play Resident Evil then you’re missing out on not only a classic title but one that spawned an entire franchise.

  • Developer: Telltale Games
  • Publisher: Telltale Games

Okay while this may not be looked upon as the standout title when it comes to the horror genre, the narrative journey Telltale Games takes players in The Walking Dead is rather grim. The video game is part of a series of titles that are somewhat linked together. Of course the game is connected to The Walking Dead television and comic book series, though prior knowledge about The Walking Dead content is not required before jumping into the dark journey.

Overall, players step into the role of Lee Everett who ends up becoming a fatherly figure to a small girl named Clementine when the world ending zombie apocalypse suddenly breaks out. There is a series of episodes to play through in this point-and-click style adventure filled with morale ambiguity choices and puzzles.

Resident Evil 7 takes place four years after the events of Resident Evil 6, in a fictional city of Dulvey, Louisiana. Players will be taking on the role of Ethan, a man who is searching for his missing wife where his investigation leads him to a derelict plantation mansion that houses the oddity Baker family.

It seems that Ethan will have to escape from the cannibalistic Baker family while also searching for clues as to why his journey took him to the Baker family. The overall game does see some changes from the norm in the franchise such as putting players in a first-person perspective. Furthermore, the game takes a step back to the early years of Resident Evil with a focus on survival horror elements rather than action based horror. After players complete the main campaign of Resident Evil 7 they can move on and enjoy the narrative DLC which does help flesh out the story along with tying up some of the loose ends from the narrative ending.

The Last of Us saw countless awards once the studio unleashed this video game into the market.

This is an action-adventure survival horror type video game set in a world where a disease that turns people into mindless creatures similar to zombies has started to spread globally. Players take on the role of Joe who must deliver a young girl named Ellie to a group safely across the United States.

With bandits, thieves, military, and lastly infected between Joel and his objective, players will have to carefully maneuver around the levels strategically. However, the narrative journey will tug on your heartstrings leaving you begging for more.

haunted house games ps4

Resident Evil has been an iconic video game franchise for years and while the series has had its share of adjustments in terms of gameplay mechanics, Capcom offered gamers an old school survival horror experience with the remake of Resident Evil 3. Overall, the game follows Jill Valentine who is being hunted down by a BOW all while trying to escape an under overrun Raccoon City. Now the game is not necessarily long especially in comparison to Resident Evil 2 and it’s rather linear as well. However, what may make this game a bit uncomfortable for some players is the fact that at any moment, a massive undead enemy creature known as the Nemesis can pop out, leaving you on the run. It’s the uneasy feeling that may leave you on the edge of your seat, uncertain on whether the next area you head into is filled with some type of undead creature or the seemingly unstoppable Nemesis. If we can offer a tip, we suggest making sure you save often.

Resident Evil Village

Resident Evil has been on a bit of a renaissance as of late. It started with the seventh main title in Biohazard, and then, it continued with Resident Evil Village. This game brought back Ethan Winters and had him go on a mission to a strange village where his daughter was being held captive.

The game was beloved by fans and critics for its looks, monsters, and Lady Dimitrescu.

If you get the game soon, you’ll have access to the DLC content. This includes an extra story starring Rose Winters, Ethan’s daughter. She’ll return to the village to learn more about who she is, and it’ll close the book on the Winters story.

Capcom has been an iconic video game development studio over the years and its brought out some incredible IPs. One of which was Resident Evil, a title we definitely feature heavily here on this list and as iconic as this series is, there was no surprise when the development team decided to handle remakes. Unfortunately for gamers, most of the remakes were spent on the original title and while that’s not a bad thing, for fans of the series, there have been plenty of vocal pleas for developers to bring out a remake of its sequel, Resident Evil 2. Well, it took a few years but Capcom did just that and delivered gamers a remake of Resident Evil 2 for current generation platforms. This remake does exactly what Capcom did with the original installment.

Resident Evil 2 the remake brought in an overhaul to the visuals which made the game look fresh and defined. However, there were some changes to the game overall such as the game mechanics such as removing the tank controls that were standard years ago to a more acceptable third-person mechanics found in today’s latest releases. Likewise, there was a change to the camera system as players won’t be dealing with a fixed camera perspective. Instead, the development team decided to bring in the camera and feature it over-the-shoulder, bringing the player closer into the action. Luckily, the game wasn’t altered in terms of the story. Players will still take control of both Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield as they attempt to escape the undead filled Raccoon City.

The Inpatient is a psychological horror video game developed by Supermassive Games, the developers behind the hit horror title Until Dawn. This is a PlayStation VR title which means you’ll be required to use the virtual reality headset in order to progress through the game.

We won’t spoil you with too many details regarding the narrative, but The Inpatient takes place sixty years prior to the events of Until Dawn. Players step into the shoes of an amnesiac who trying to recall lost events while at a sanatorium institute.

There won’t be too many jumps scares to go through in The Inpatient as developers rely on setting a more horrific and terrifying atmosphere.

Normally video game adaptations of movies are a bit sub-par, but there’s an exception for Friday the 13th: The Game. This is a video game title that heavily focuses on multiplayer gameplay.

Friday the 13th: The Game can support up to eight players, seven of which are camp counselors while the remaining one will take on the role of Jason Voorhees. There are two end goals of the game, the players will work together in order to defeat Jason while the main enemy player will search and slaughter the hidden camp counselors.

Remothered: Tormented Fathers has another installment for fans this year. The video game is known as Remothered: Broken Porcelain and for those of you who were hoping for a sequel to top the first installment, you may be a bit letdown. Still, this game offers the same style of gameplay as the first title. However, there is more combat put in place. Within the game, players take the role of a young girl who gets kicked out of a boarding school and is forced into working as a maid at Ashmann Inn.

It doesn’t take our protagonist very long to discover that there are some dark secrets within the Inn and it’s up to you to uncover what’s really going on. However, the more you dig the dangerous the place becomes. As mentioned, while the gameplay is similar to the first installment where there is plenty of exploration and the focus of fleeing from enemies, players will also get the chance to attack if they carefully sneak behind the enemy. It’s a bit clunky especially at release, but we’re hopeful the development team is able to clean up the game a bit through patches.

Maid of Sker is an adventure horror title that comes from Wales Interactive. Based on Welsh folklore, players step into the year 1898 where you assume the role of Thomas. Early into the game, you learn that Thomas is on his way to rescue his lover after she writes a letter alerting him of being imprisoned at her family hotel. Of course, upon arrival, you learn that there are more sinister actions going on in the derelict building. This game is all based around exploration and solving puzzles as you wander the gloomy area. One of the big plays in this game is based around sound as masked villains that wander the area can really only notice your presence if you get too close or happen to be too loud with your interactions. With jump scares, a chilling audio mix, and an atmospheric level design, players are likely to always be tensed through the five-hour campaign.

The 13 Best PS4 Horror Games, Ranked

haunted house games ps4

If you buy something using our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!

Like being scared out of your mind? Horror books are pretty good, and horror movies are even better, but horror video games provide a unique kind of thrilling terror because they're interactive.

Horror games put you at the center of the action and force you to live out the frightening sequences waiting in the shadows—and the PlayStation 4 is jam-packed with quality horror games.

Looking for the most dreadful, terrifying, and heart-pounding gaming experiences? Here are my picks for the best PlayStation 4 horror games you need to check out.

13. The Evil Within

haunted house games ps4

The Evil Within (and its sequel) is a survival horror played in third-person, where you use guns and other weapons to fight your way through nightmarish locations full of terrifying creatures.

While the survival gameplay is solid—a fun mixture of stealth and action—the characters are a bit flat and the story isn't the most engaging. It came out at a time when Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 moved away from their roots, and filled the void they left behind.

12. Amnesia: Collection

haunted house games ps4

Amnesia: Collection is a bundle of three titles: the original Amnesia: The Dark Descent and its Amnesia: Justine DLC, plus the Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs sequel game.

If you're in the mood for atmospheric horror that focuses on running away and avoiding monsters rather than going up against them in head-to-head combat, this is a must-play series.

While the original game is still the best of the bunch, the entire collection offers enough horror thrills to be worth grabbing—certainly enough value for the cost, even at retail price.

11. Outlast: Trinity

haunted house games ps4

Outlast: Trinity is a bundle of three titles: the original Outlast and the Outlast: Whistleblower DLC, as well as the Outlast 2 sequel.

The game is played in first-person and puts you in the role of a freelancer journalist who goes to investigate Mount Massive Asylum, a psychiatic hospital deep in the mountains of Colorado.

The first Outlast is the best, but they're all worth playing if you want a horror game that'll mess with your mind and truly freak you out. The setting, the story, and the encounters come together well.

10. Until Dawn

haunted house games ps4

If you've always wanted to "play" as a character in a horror movie, then Until Dawn is the perfect game for you. It's basically a choose-your-own-adventure game with all the horror and murder you could want.

Your choices will decide which characters live and die, and that gives every scene a real sense of weight and meaning. Add in the fantastic visuals that make the action look real? You have a recipe for terror.

9. Resident Evil 3

haunted house games ps4

There will be a few Resident Evil games mentioned in this article—how could we look over the most iconic horror video game series?—and Resident Evil 3 is the first of the bunch.

Resident Evil 3 for the PlayStation 4 is a remake of the classic Resident Evil 3: Nemesis that was released in 1999 for the original PlayStation. It stays true to the core essence, while updating the visuals and controls for a more modern gaming experience.

With entries as solid as this one, it's no wonder how the Resident Evil franchise has stood the test of time so well.

haunted house games ps4

SOMA may bring all kinds of sci-fi elements to the table, but make no mistake: SOMA is first and foremost a horror video game.

It comes from the same folks who gave us the aforementioned Amnesia Collection —and while the Amnesia games were great, SOMA kicks the horror elements up even further for a truly scary experience.

There's some serious horror pedigree behind SOMA , and its dripping with so much terrifying content that you'll be on the edge of your seat, ready to bolt at a moment's notice.

7. Alien: Isolation

haunted house games ps4

Alien: Isolation isn't just the best video game in the Alien franchise—yes, the iconic sci-fi movie series—but one of the best horror video games on the PlayStation 4. Its combination of sci-fi elements with first-person stealth-survival horror is inspired.

You play as Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Ellen Ripley, who investigates the disappearance of her mother 15 years after the events of the original Alien movie.

Much of the game involves avoiding a single monster—the titular xenomorph that's hunting you down—as you try to figure out what happened. The game is relatively short with a playtime around 18 hours, but every moment is intense.

6. Darkwood

haunted house games ps4

Darkwood is unique on our list of best PS4 horror games because it uses a top-down perspective rather than the more commonly used third-person or first-person perspectives. That said, if you don't think top-down games can be scary, this one will change your mind.

You play as a character who's trapped in an Eastern European forest and needs to find a way out, all while surviving through nights and interacting with NPCs. Your choices lead you to various endings.

Between the game's semi-open world, supply scavenging, crafting system, stealthy combat, night survival bonuses, and hauntingly creepy music, you'll be hooked on trying to make it out alive while being scared out of your wits.

haunted house games ps4

Visage is one of the best indie horror games ever made. It features a mysterious house that's constantly changing and full of supernatural beings and paranormal activity.

You play as Dwayne Anderson, a character who's stuck in the house and trying to figure out why these weird events are happening—as well as searching for a way to escape the psychological torment.

It has a few flaws as far as controls and puzzle design, but the overall atmosphere and experience is so good that Visage is a must-play for any fan of horror games.

4. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

haunted house games ps4

After the disappointingly action-heavy Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 , Capcom returned the franchise to its survival horror roots with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard —with a few innovations.

You play as Ethan Winters and you're trying to find your missing wife on an abandoned plantation. Sounds creepy already, doesn't it? And it's the first game in the mainline Resident Evil series to use a first-person viewpoint, which ramps up the thrills.

And if you have a PS VR headset, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is actually quite good in virtual reality. Try it out if you get the chance.

3. DOOM Eternal

haunted house games ps4

DOOM Eternal is technically a horror game, but more towards the action-thriller horror end of the spectrum than survival horror. Still, it's a horror game at heart—and a damn good one.

DOOM Eternal is the sequel to 2016's DOOM and has you playing as Doomguy in an effort to stop Hell's invasion of Earth once again. Unlike previous entries in the series, DOOM Eternal places more emphasis on narrative and lore, which adds to the horror aspects.

The gameplay is solid, the shooting feels incredible, the monsters look fantastic, and the story is interesting.

2. Resident Evil 2

haunted house games ps4

Resident Evil 2 for the PlayStation 4 is a remake of the 1998 game Resident Evil 2 for the original PlayStation.

The classic Resident Evil 2 was always my favorite entry in the long-running horror game franchise, but this remake took the already-amazing game and elevated it to a level I didn't think was possible.

It takes all of the best elements from the original game, strips away the outdated graphics and clunky movement, throws in revamped visuals and controls, resulting in one of the best horror games ever made.

1. The Last of Us Remastered

haunted house games ps4

Was there any question about which PS4 horror game would sit at the top of this list? The Last of Us: Remastered isn't only the best horror game on the PlayStation 4—it might be the best PS4 game, period.

The remastered version takes the original The Last of Us for the PlayStation 3 and enhances it with better controls, more intuitive interface elements, improved graphics, and other goodies.

It's an absolute masterpiece that'll do more than just scare you to your core—it'll make you feel all sorts of emotions as it ties you up in its story, world, and characters. This is what horror gaming should be.

The story is told from the point of view of Clementine, a young survivor of the horror and now has to go through multiple caregivers and situations that she grows through.

The story has many of the same challenges you saw on the same name's popular television series. Most of the enemies aren't just the zombies but rather other survivors who are doing whatever they want in a world devoid of law. Basically, Until Dawn is a horror movie turned video game. You will follow along with a horrific storyline that will take you to places that you would not expect. You can play singularly, or you can play in a group. This game will have incredible graphics that will make it seem more realistic while you play. Another great feature of this game is that your choices decide the game's outcome by determining who lives and who dies.

Overall, Until Dawn is among the best horror games for PS4 because it is horror-based. One thing you may not like about the game is that it is more story and less gameplay. 7. Outlast Trinity

Outlast 1

If you were anywhere near YouTube in the 2010s and followed anything about gaming, chances are, one of your favorite streamers played Outlast. This survival horror game launched a thousand copycat games featuring jump scares and cut scenes featuring you in terrifyingly powerless situations.

You play as journalist Miles Upshur. In later games, you play as other journalists and camera crew members. As Upshur, you’re investigating a psychiatric facility, Mount Massive Asylum, for a story. The Asylum is located deep in the Rockies in Colorado and is full of elevators, caverns, flooded rooms, medical equipment, and patients. Why are you there? You received a tip about inhumane experiments being performed and want to expose the story to the world. What could possibly go wrong?

In first-person mode, you have to rely on your wits and stealth tactics to survive. You don’t have a health bar, so you don’t know whether a homicidal patient or a psychopathic doctor will kill you with each encounter. Therefore, the survival horror game is perfect if you like playing stealth games or feeling like you’re in a terrifying situation with no backup and no idea how you’re faring. You’ll have to hide in lockers, walk, run, jump, and crouch to make it out of the asylum alive.

This pack comes with Outlast, Outlast: Whistleblower, and Outlast II so you can play the entire trilogy. As of this writing, a closed beta was released for another Outlast game, and fans are anxiously waiting for a release date in 2023, so if you’re hopeful about another game in the franchise, this will keep you caught up until it drops.

  • Combines stealth mechanics with a memorable horror game
  • Comes with all 3 games released in the franchise
  • Run, hide, or die as you try to outlast the horrors in the asylum
  • Delve into a dark story of corruption and psychopathy
  • Publisher: Red Barrels
  • Genre: Survival Horror
  • Mode: First-person single player
  • Seminal horror game of the 2010s
  • Jump scares and terrifying situations
  • Receive all 3 games in 1 package
  • Characters are underpowered

8. The Quarry

Quarry 1

You’re a teenage camp counselor. It’s the last night of summer camp. Tomorrow, you and the campers you’ve watched for eight weeks go home to face another school year, but you’ll never forget the friendships and memories you made at Hackett’s Quarry for years, especially after the wildest, most frightening night of your life.

You know where this is going. From Friday the 13th to other classic slashers, the teenage camp counselors stuck in the woods with killers, monsters, and crazy locals is such a mainstay in horror that Supermassive games turned it into an original videogame. For extra fun, they created a “choose your own adventure” story where your decisions determine the gameplay. Are you going to investigate the screams from the woods? Do you want to know what’s under the trap door? Will you run, hide or fight? Even if you think you’re just going to have a cozy night in your cabin and let someone else handle the screams and frights, danger will come to you, and every little decision you make affects the outcome for you and your friends.

Although this was a later release for PS4, it will be remembered as a staple in the summer camp subgenre of horror games for years to come. Every new gameplay is a unique experience and you’ll love coming back again and again to see how things turn out differently each time.

  • Visually stunning graphics that make this game terrifying
  • Play as one of 9 camp counselors
  • Outwit different enemies based on your choices
  • Choose-Your-Own Adventure style story
  • Storyline varies based on your actions.
  • Face different scenarios so there’s never a dull moment in the game
  • No upgrade to PS5 enhanced version

9. The Sinking City

The Sinking City

The Sinking City is among the best horror games for PS4 because it provides you a storyline like no other. This game has a high replay value that is thanks to an open investigation that you will be taken on. There are a number of cases that need to be solved, which can provide a different ending depending on what your choices are.

This world inside this game is vastly open to any type of situation. You can be diving or on foot or even on a boat. No matter where you go, you will encounter some horrific creatures that you can only kill with 1920s era style weapons, which is fantastic. You have to manage your mental health as you untangle a truth filled with madness.

Overall, the Sinking City is a fantastic horror game that provides both adventure and action along the way. The story can get dry after a while, but it really depends on what you choose to do. The only other thing that you may find frustrating is the load times are lagging.

  • This game provides you a story of the life of a private investigator
  • The arsenal of weapons you get in this game are from teh 1920s
  • You will face a nightmarish creature that will prove to be a formidable opponent
  • Publisher: Bigben
  • Genre: Action RPG
  • Mode: Third-person perspective
  • Excellent weapons
  • Load times are lagging

10. The Inpatient

The Inpatient

The Inpatient is a great game when looking for the best horror games for PS4. This game is a virtual reality game that requires you have them set up for VR. You will love how immersive this game is and how it gives you a series of choices instead of a simple right or wrong motion. This game is truly incredible, and it will frighten you, so be prepared.

If you are a haunted house lover, this game is the one for you. The graphics being a VR are incredible, and it will have you hesitating around each corner. The story is about more than just scares; there is a rich backstory that you will uncover as you proceed through the game. You are in the main character's shoes, and it will take you on a scenic ride as you understand the bridge between choices and consequences.

Overall, Inpatient is an excellent horror game that you will love. The drawback is that the story can feel dry if you are more into fast-paced games, but if you love a story, you will love this game's dimensions. The gameplay is more concise and organized than in some other games you will find—a great choice looking for an excellent horror game.

  • A game that leads you to discover who you are
  • Integral gameplay that has you branching between choices and consequences
  • The story goes above and beyond fright to discovery and conspiracy
  • Mode: VR - Single-Player
  • Detailed storyline
  • Feels more like a haunted house

Choosing a horror game isn’t always easy because you need to know what constitutes “horror” to do that. There are many different ways you can tell that you are on the right track to what's scary.

It’s not a secret that the game's quality is going to play a huge factor in what makes a good horror game. However, many other vital elements go into a horror game you want to play.

Elements Of A Good Horror Game

haunted house games ps4

Here are some vital pointers to help you choose the best horror game by going through the elements of what will make it the best game you’ve ever played.

Disempowerment: All video games are based on a type of interaction. You want to engage characters, villains, and whatever environment you are playing in. Since empowerment is a huge reason many play games, you would think the same applies to horror.

It does not. A good horror game is going to disempower you. In this type of game, you want the removal of the possibility of combat. The flight is your only option. The only thing you can do in a horror game is run and hide.

Isolation: As human beings, you strive to connect with others. Either you need guidance or help or just like to socialize, as a human being, you want connection, and horror games are not about that. Isolation makes a horror game scary. By capitalizing on the characters being alone or feeling isolated, horror games are more ominous and creepy. The music helps too.

Tension: Tension is derived from either mental or emotional types of strain in a video game. A horror game needs to have some sort of tension so that it is successful. There are many different ways you can achieve tension. It was already stated that tension could come from disempowerment and isolation. However, it is more than that.

Having to look for a way to defend yourself in unfamiliar territory is tension inducing. Determining where to go and what to do is also a way of inducing tension. In a horror game, you are forced to manage with what you can scrounge up. There are all kinds of ways to induce tension in a video game.

Uncertainty: Any horror movie, story, or game is going to have uncertainty. You want that thrill of the unknown, and it is what pushes you to either fight or run away. A great horror game will not be predictable but rather keep you guessing what's around each corner.

Fear: Not only is fear necessary in a horror game, but it also needs to linger. A fear that is in the pit of your stomach but does not go away is the right kind of fear for horror. A great horror game is psychologically trying. It is about encountering the deepest fears in humanity and facing them. Fear is going to make or break the game.

You never really know what you are getting into when you play the best horror games for PS4 on the market. However, you do know that it is going to be a thrill. What you want is to feel that fear, feel powerless, and know that survival is vital. That is why you play.

Now that you've gotten this far, you can revisit our list for the best PS4 horror games and find which is perfect for you!

Q: Which horror game franchise is the best?

Resident Evil is widely regarded as the best horror franchise of all time. It’s no surprise that the franchise is responsible for generating the most interest in the genre. Over the years there have been wonderful innovations that have truly pushed the genre forward. However, as is the case with most video game genres, the ones responsible for popularizing the genre oftentimes create the best video game experiences. In this case, Resident Evil put horror games on the map as of 1996 and has continued to do so ever since. The franchise’s longevity speaks to both the popularity and high quality of Resident Evil games.

Q: Are horror games in Virtual Reality scarier?

The answer to this question is a resounding yes. It makes sense that the most immersive experience possible would elicit the most potent amount of fear. When popular horror games switched from third-person perspectives to first-person perspectives, the fright factor increased. Players would feel closer to the action and more susceptible to jump scares. Virtual Reality takes the first-person perspective to a whole new level by fully integrating the gamer’s point of view into the action. Due to the relative freshness of this technology the catalog of horror games is not all that extensive. However, with each passing year, video game studios get a better understanding of how to utilize Virtual Reality. This will lead to the production of additional finely tuned VR horror games.

Q: Are horror games popular?

Understandably so, horror games are not extremely popular. They occupy a niche within the gaming community. Not all players all looking for a frightening experience. This is a shame because there are some truly magnificent horror games out there. The misconception that most people have toward horror games is that they mimic the traditionally poor quality of horror movies. This is not the case whatsoever. The most popular video game genres include action, adventure, role-playing, and sports. Horror games rank well below the percentage of the aforementioned game genres. At best we can consider horror games to occupy a minute portion of the action genre. However, we must accept its status as a niche genre.

Q: What are survival horror games?

Survival horror games are a subgenre of horror games. Horror games can take on various forms. Thus, it is noteworthy to divide certain games into sub-categories. In these games, the focus shifts to the survival of the main character. Like most horror games, a survival horror game will attempt to frighten you, all while forcing you to make decisions that impact the survival odds of your character. The limited amount of weapons, tools, or ammunition is a common inclusion of survival horror games. The aim is to put the player in a tough spot where they have to decide how to use their limited resources. Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil are the two most successful examples of survival horror games.

Q: Are there multiplayer horror games?

Sometimes it feels better to share the frightening atmosphere with a friend or two. In such cases, there are several excellent multiplayer horror games. Traditional horror games indeed aimed to present the solo player with as many scares as possible. However, in recent times, multiplayer horror games have risen in popularity. Left 4 Dead is just one of these games. It is a zombie-infested survival horror game that was developed for multiplayer gaming. Up to four friends are encouraged to get together to survive hordes of zombies. Dead by Daylight is another extremely popular multiplayer horror game. This game pits online players against each other as a killer is on the loose. Players must work together to find a way to escape the killer’s grounds.

The Scariest PS4 and PS VR Horror Games of 2017

The Scariest PS4 and PS VR Horror Games of 2017

The best gaming horror of the year, all in one place.

haunted house games ps4

Boo! Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you. But we’re feeling the Halloween spirit and there’s a big reason why: all of the great new horror games that have come to PS4 and PS VR this year!

It’s always good to have backup when facing horror, so let us shine a flashlight on some of the biggest and best new horror games that have hit PlayStation platforms in 2017. Got a spooky recommendation to add? Leave it in the comments below!

Resident Evil 7

If you missed Capcom’s masterful return to form for the pre-eminent survival horror when it released earlier this year on PS4, the upcoming Gold Edition (December 12) grants you access to all of the creep-intensifying DLC alongside the award-winning first-person horror campaign. Resident Evil 7’s story can be experienced as a full-blown PS VR experience, and it remains one of the most impactful VR adventures you can undertake. If you dare!

The Evil Within 2

Compared to its gore-drenched predecessor, The Evil Within 2 veers closer to skin-crawling psychological horror. As tortured detective Sebastian Castellano, you’ll seek the truth about your daughter’s fate inside a world set entirely inside the human mind. Despite the evolution in style, there are still plenty of grisly shocks: a boss fight against a lumbering flesh golem wielding an oversized buzzsaw is notable in that it takes more brains than firepower.

Friday the 13th The Game

As an expression of 1980s horror movies in videogame form, Friday the 13th works perfectly. This asynchronous multiplayer game allows you to step into the role of one of up to seven counselors, or the nigh-unstoppable Jason Voorhees in a battle of wits. As one of the teenaged cannon fodder, you can work towards multiple objectives like restarting a car, calling the police, or (if the stars align) actually killing the masked murder. As Jason, your mission is simple; use your supernatural powers to cleanse the map of those irresponsible brats.

Dead By Daylight

A faster-paced asynchronous multiplayer horror-fest, Dead By Daylight pits a team of four survivors against a horror villain prowling a nightmare landscape. As the heroes attempt to stay out of the fiend’s clutches, they’ll repair generators in a bid to open up doors that lead to safety. If you need more context for the brutality, be sure to pick up DLC packs that let you play as Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s Leatherface and Halloween’s Michael Myers.

2017 may be a banner year for PlayStation horror games, but you shouldn’t overlook these horror classics:

Bloodborne : Not only is Bloodborne one of the best PlayStation-exclusive adventures ever created, it’s also frightening and atmospheric.

Until Dawn : It’s like a horror movie you can direct! A group of teens discover a haunted mansion, and you’re their only savior. That is, as long as you make the right choices…

Resident Evil 4 : Capcom’s classic merged action and horror, setting a standard for modern third-person shooters. And it’s now available for PS4!

Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess : Tecmo Koei has been delivering this gem of a franchise for over two decades. The pitch: play as the villain and set up sinister traps to spring on invaders!

If you want to truly experience the helplessness of a horror-movie victim, Outlast 2 is your game. After a crash leaves you stranded near the outpost of a mysterious cult, you’ll record the horrific events that unfold using your handheld camera. The documentary-style visuals make the horror come home, but the game’s real genius lies in stripping you of the defensive measures you’ve come to rely on in other survival-horror games. Aside from batteries and first-aid kits, you’ll have to rely on your wits to survive to see dayrise — a scary thought.

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier

While the undead are common game fodder, few games captured the human element of a zombie apocalypse like Telltale’s award-winning The Walking Dead series. After two seasons rife with heartbreaking choices, A New Frontier features an older, wiser Clementine facing a new set of tough decisions. If you haven’t experienced gaming’s unique take on The Walking Dead, start from the beginning and work your way to the series’ end.

If you’re looking for a bit more action with your moody first-person horror, Get Even is worth getting. While it does include combat to go alongside the atmospheric exploration, killing in Get Even will negatively affect protagonist Cole Black’s psyche (and the ending you’ll receive). You’ll have a tough choice every time you encounter enemies, especially since folks who hang around an abandoned insane asylum aren’t known for their manners.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

The nerve-wracking Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice represents a new level of storytelling ambition for the seasoned developer of DmC: Devil May Cry and Heavenly Sword. As heroine Senua, you’ll solve environmental puzzles while battling savage enemies and your increasingly fraying psyche. Few games show the psychological side of horror quite like Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, and few look as good doing it. It’s a visual knockout on PS4 Pro, too. Protip: Make sure to play this one with headphones on!

Darkest Dungeon: Crimson Edition

This one may not register as a traditional horror title, but it’s still one of the most anxiety-inducing games this side of Resident Evil 7. As you guide your pitiful little band of mercenaries through increasingly challenging dungeons, you’ll need to make tough decisions — abandon your doomed mission, or press on for greater rewards? — as Lovecraftian terrors and ever-increasing stress levels threaten to derail it all. The new Crimson Court expansion adds new horrors and a wasting disease that threatens to consume your entire roster. Not for the faint of heart!

The Best PS4 Games To Play At Halloween

haunted house games ps4

With Halloween just around the corner, everyone is getting in the mood for spooky stories and adrenaline-pumping scary experiences. If you own a PS4, you have access to a slew of terrifying games that are best played in the middle of the night with all the lights turned off, perhaps with a pumpkin glowing in the background. Gone are such times when movies were the only digital outlet for Halloween enjoyment. After all, we now live in the virtual reality age – perfect for engaging in some thrilling experiences.

The following list of games is a great place to start if you’re looking to get your heart pumping and skin crawling, and if you’re still in the mood for a frightfully good time even after the holiday is over, then we present you with the perfect list of games to enjoy come October the 31st. Let’s begin.

Until Dawn Rush of Blood

At first glance, you may see Until Dawn as a stereotypical “group of teens stranded in a cabin in the woods” story, but you’d be very wrong. This game certainly hits on a few of the cliché horror story notes that we’ve grown used to over time, but when it really gets going, it introduces elements that take the fear factor up a whole ‘nother level. Until Dawn’s primary draw is its “butterfly effect” feature, which changes the outcome of the game based on little, seemingly-meaningless decisions that you make throughout. The consequences are real, too- characters can die because of careless choices, and it’s possible to either whittle the cast away over the course of the game or hit the end credits with the majority of your group still intact- it’s all up to you.

The atmosphere is excellent and the voice acting is phenomenal, and even the gameplay doesn’t feel as limiting as you might imagine considering this follows the Heavy Rain style of leaving action to QTEs, restricting camera movement and limiting your control over characters to just traversing the environment. Until Dawn Rush of Blood was released for PlayStation VR, and is also worth expericing.

Friday the 13th: The Game

haunted house games ps4

This title has its flaws and didn’t live up to the bloated expectations from many fans. With that said, it does a number of things really well. It’s a unique game that pulls you into the movie script allowing you to play as Jason or one of the characters. Jason’s super-powers certainly make it difficult to escape or survive the round, which is the goal of gameplay. What’s more, the action takes place online – it’s a multiplayer only game. With a variety of escape routes, a tense mix of chasing, hiding and teamwork play a key roll in the overall outcome. As mentioned, the game does contain bugs, which are very annoying and detract from what stands – a decent game. Be sure to consider playing this one over the Halloween period – don’t forget to watch the movie too.

Alien: Isolation

After the godawful release of Aliens: Colonial Marines, many gamers were worried that they’d never get to play a really good title based on a franchise practically made for video game spinoffs. Those fears can be put to rest thanks to Alien: Isolation, which is hands-down one of the scariest and most tense gaming experiences we’ve seen in a very long time. Unlike the badass action of the movie Aliens, Isolation draws on what made the first Alien so good- primal fear. You are being hunted by a single xenomorph who will rip you to shreds within seconds of spotting you, and you can’t kill it. Instead, you have to rely on stealth and a few rudimentary gadgets to survive as you try to escape a creepy space station.

In addition to the xenomorph, you’ll end up fighting human enemies and androids, but you never know when the alien will show up- instead of following a predetermined path, it will actively search the environment based on sights and sounds that capture its attention, meaning it can pop out at any time to start wreaking havoc.

The Last of Us Remastered

If you still haven’t played The Last of Us: Remastered, you’re running out of excuses. While not as overly scary, it definitely has its fair share of terrifying moments, and the gameplay can absolutely be described as edge-of-your-seat. It’s a survival horror game after all, and many people tend to forget that simply because everyone’s favorite memory is the story and the relationship between the game’s two main characters. When you find yourself up against a group of zombies and you only have two bullets left in your revolver and no med-kits to save you, though… yeah, you’re going to be scared. Just wait until you have to start a deafening generator in a room full of one-shotting enemies who hunt based on sound.

The less said about this series the better, because it’s best to go into the experience with no idea what you’re going to encounter. All you need to know is that you’re an investigative journalist exploring an abandoned psychiatric hospital in the Colorado Rockies, and you will be terrified the entire way through. Seriously, if you only play one game on this list, make it Outlast. And don’t read anything else about it first. Outlast 2 was released April 2017, and progresses onwards from the found footage characteristics from the first game. Containting plenty of gore, these are two games that you should delve into this October.

Grand Theft Auto V

The world of Las Santos is already fairly hectic, with daily murders and car-jackings. However, come Halloween, Rockstar delivers a host of exciting new features, outfits, masks, themes and other goodies – just as they do at Christmas. Ultimately, it creates the perfect atmosphere for fans come Halloween. Thus, Grand Theft Auto V is on our list of games to play at Halloween.

Paranormal Activity: The Lost Soul

If this game doesn’t make it and release before Halloween, then the developers have certainly made a mistake. Virtual reality was practically made for horror games, and the PSVR already has a plethora of them coming its way. With that being said, though, Paranormal Activity: The Lost Soul looks to be one of the spookiest… and any fan of horror should definitely consider picking up a copy once the game itself finally drops. The first-person experience will offer ten hours of gameplay, but we imagine it’ll take a lot longer to actually finish, as a number of breaks will no doubt be needed to clean the sweat from your palms and let your heart rate get back to normal. The story is not tied to any one specific PA movie, but it fits right in with the poltergeist theme of the films. In one gameplay demo, players are tasked with moving through a possessed house, and as things start getting weird, people start freaking out- tears have been shed over how scary this game is!

The Evil Within 2

If you are a fan of the Resident Evil series, then you be pleased to note that The Evil Within was directed and inspired by that very series creator. In other words, you are assured of some great horror gameplay and a spooky-driven atmosphere. The sequel was released October 13 th 2017 and continues on three years after the events at Beacon Mental Hospital – but you’ll have to play the first game before delving into the second, that’s if you want a full understanding of how the story unfolds. Both games deliver a solid horror experience.

haunted house games ps4

You might be wondering what P.T even means, since it’s a rather strange name for a game. Well, it translates to Playable Teaser. Sadly, that’s all it ever was, after the developer decided to cancel progressing onwards with a direct game release, which was set to be called Silent Hills.  It was released as a free download on the PlayStation Network on 12 August 2014. The game’s theme is set in a haunted corridor from where the player is encouraged to investigate devilish events and solve cryptic puzzles. Since this game isn’t available, you’ll struggle to garner the opportunity to play it – it’s so rare that some gamers are willing to pay big money to purchase older consoles with it installed on the HDD. This is a must play if you are one of the lucky few.

In Praise of Bloodborne - 3

It’s not just award-winning, but an exclusive too. Bloodborne covers many of the ingredients needed when it comes to a horror title, hence its gothic style. Whilst not a flat-out horror experience, you are always aware that the environment is spooky and perfect for Halloween. You will need a PS4 to play this game, but you won’t find another RPG title anywhere else that captives just as Bloodborne achieves.  As for the visuals, they’re simply stunning, yet the gameplay is where the real entertainment value excels.

Simply put, the PS4 has an amazing collection of titles available within the horror genre, better than the alternatives, and this Halloween is specifically special for anyone who owns a PlayStation 4.

A good scare once in a while won’t hurt. With the right game and console, you can have just the right amount of fright, enough to keep you awake at night but not so much to give you a heart attack – or who knows?

If you enjoy the feeling of tense atmospheres or stories of monsters lurking in the shadows, what better way to experience similar situations than through video games?

Thanks to the PS5, you get to witness terrifying events in an intensely immersive way.

So, I’ve compiled a list of the best scary and horror games for PS5 that will spook the bejabbers out of you, unless you have a heart of stone and feel nothing.

From action-filled masterpieces to carefully narrated adventures and jump-scare-packed titles, these games are likely to give you nightmares for days. If you think you’re up for it, let’s dig in!

In Sound Mind

in sound mind

  • Genre:  Horror, Adventure, Shooter
  • Developers:  We Create Stuff
  • PlayStation Release Date:  2021
  • Buy from: PlayStation , Amazon
  • Multiplayer:  No
  • Average Playtime (Main Story/Objectives):  10 hours

In Sound Mind is a psychological horror game published by Modus Games .

As a player, you assume the role of Desmond Wales, a psychologist who wakes up to discover that he’s trapped in his apartment building amid a suddenly flooded town.

The game consists of various levels, each having cassette tapes that share details on Wales’ mentally ill patients.

The recordings have the power of transporting Wales into the minds of his patients, where their fears become a reality in the form of monstrous beings, which he must overcome.

Unlike most horror games, this one features unique, unconventional mechanics. For instance, Virginia, one of the patients, has a phobia of being stared at, so to conquer her monster manifestation, you must make use of a broken mirror.

Evil apparitions and lamp-for-a-head shadow monsters patrol the building, hunting you at every turn.

Luckily, the game will teach you how to stealthily get around these creatures but expect a few jump scares from time to time.

Once in a while, you’ll engage in combat, but some monsters can’t be killed, so stealth is the best option.

In Sound Mind uses dark and psychedelic visual styles to enhance the feeling of horror. The sound design is also very effective, featuring a creepy and ambient soundtrack and exceptional voice acting.

All these elements, presented in 4K resolution with a 60fps framerate, make this game one of the best scary games for PS5.

the medium

  • Genre:  Psychological horror, Adventure
  • Developers:  Bloober Team
  • PlayStation Release Date:  September 3, 2021
  • Average Playtime (Main Story/Objectives):  8 hours, 30 minutes

Have you ever wondered about another reality other than the one we live in? Maybe there’s another realm filled with spirits and beings we can’t see nor touch.

This imaginative world of spirits is what Bloober Team explores in The Medium .

Marianne is a medium that can inhabit the real world and the spirit realm. She is suddenly summoned by Thomas, a man who knows of her abilities, to an abandoned hotel, Niwa Resort, where a massacre took place.

In this hotel, Marianne encounters lost souls and the malevolent and powerful spirit responsible for the Niwa massacre. This hostile creature hunts her down in hopes of escaping the resort.

The game lacks combat mechanics – an element that I believe amplifies the scares and turns up tension – leaving Marianne with stealth tactics as her only hope of survival.

However, the psychological pressure can still get pretty horrific. At some point, you’ll coexist in both realms simultaneously to find a way forward. For instance, a door closed in the real world may be opened in the spirit world.

If you’re a fan of Resident Evil and Silent Hill , you’ll love The Medium since it draws inspiration from both games to form its own fairly unique, frightening experience.

Bar a couple of technical issues, this is one of the overall best horror games for PS5.

  • Genre:  Psychological horror
  • Developers:  SadSquare Studio
  • PlayStation Release Date:  November 11, 2021
  • Buy from: PlayStation
  • Average Playtime (Main Story/Objectives):  9 hours

If you’ve never been to a haunted house but would love to know what it’s like, here’s the perfect opportunity. SadSquare Studio published the game in 2020 for the PS4 and in 2021 for the PS5.

The game takes place in a house filled with years of disastrous events ranging from demonic possessions to unwarranted killings.

It consists of four chapters through which protagonist Dwayne experiences a series of perturbations and spectral visions while solving puzzles and following clues in an attempt to escape the house.

With doors slamming, clocks chiming, lights flickering, and electronics turning on and off, Dwayne is forced to take pills to maintain his sanity. You can never tell who or what is beside you with the dim surroundings.

You’re bound to see a ghost or two wandering about or just standing and staring at you from a distance.

As you explore the house, traversing each chapter, you’ll encounter different environments ranging from psychiatric institutions to ghastly cemeteries.

The effective utilization of flickering lights, rainfall, unforgivable shocks, surging anxiety, and disturbing sounds puts this game in a league of its own.

If you love scary games, Visage is a nightmare you don’t want to overlook.

Dead by Daylight

dead by daylight

  • Genre:  Survival horror
  • Developers:  Behaviour Interactive
  • PlayStation Release Date:  November 2020
  • Multiplayer:  Online co-op/multiplayer
  • Average Playtime (Main Story/Objectives):  N/A

Dead by Daylight was initially released in 2016 for PC before it became available on PS4 in 2017 and PS5 in 2020.

It is a one-versus-four multiplayer game where you’re either a killer or one of four survivors trying to escape from a killer.

The killer’s goal is to capture the survivors and sacrifice them to an ominous and malicious dark force known as The Entity. Meanwhile, as a survivor, your objective is to escape through exit gates that can only be opened by fixing five generators.

If you prefer to be a killer, you have six ruthless prospects to choose from. Each killer has its own unique ability and can also level up through the Bloodweb, becoming even more vicious than before.

As a survivor, being hung on a hook isn’t game over. You can escape or be rescued, but you must be careful because the killer might be using you as a lure for other survivors.

However, you must make a tough decision when you’re on the safe end and a fellow survivor is hanging on a hook.

Do you save your friend, knowing it might be a trap? Or do you use the opportunity to find and fix a generator while the killer is busy?

Dead by Daylight is filled with enough tension and terror for survivors and, at the same time, relief for those playing the role of the killer. Overall, it is a great game with exciting gameplay.

Resident Evil Village

resident evil village

  • Genre:  Survival horror
  • Developers:  Capcom
  • PlayStation Release Date:  May 7, 2021
  • Buy from:  PlayStation ,  Amazon
  • Multiplayer:  No
  • Average Playtime (Main Story/Objectives):  9 hours, 30 minutes

Resident Evil Village is an action horror game developed and published by Japanese studio Capcom .

It is the sequel to Resident Evil 7 and is the eighth major installment in the popular Resident Evil series.

You take on the role of Ethan, who, after years of the tragic events that took place in Resident Evil 7 , is finally living in peace with his wife, Mia.

Unfortunately, Mia is murdered, and Ethan sees himself fighting to rescue his daughter from unearthly creatures inhabiting a medieval mansion and its neighboring village.

Unlike the games reviewed so far, Resident Evil Village features much combat engagement.

Ethan has an arsenal of grenade launchers, pistols, and shotguns to help him eliminate the lurking monsters. You can also scan rooms for equipment like healing items and ammo with help from the game’s map.

Ethan’s journey to save his daughter forces you to explore bloody wine cellars and a terrifying house filled with creepy ceramic dolls who, at some point, will chase you, making you run for your life.

There’s also Lady Dumitrescu, who pesters the protagonist throughout the game, popping up unexpectedly and creating tension.

Resident Evil Village uses the PS5-specific features to make the game even more immersive.

With ray tracing, adaptive triggers, super-fast load times – Capcom doesn’t hold back in incorporating all these elements to create a truly spectacular horror game.

Alan Wake Remastered

alan wake

  • Genre:  Action-adventure, Shooter
  • Developers:  Remedy Entertainment
  • PlayStation Release Date:  October 5, 2021

Whenever a remastered version of a game comes out, there’s usually a high level of expectation, especially in terms of the improvements made in comparison to the original.

Well, Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment certainly delivered in this improved action-adventure horror game.

The narrative elements and gameplay remain the same as the original, but this time they’re supported with improved visuals viewed in 4K resolution.

Alan Wake is a writer who, along with his wife, travels to the small mysterious town of Bright Falls to find inspiration for his work. After his beloved mysteriously disappears, Alan finds himself going through a series of paranormal events.

One moment he dives into a lake for a quick swim; another moment, he wakes up in his car with blood all over his head.

To find his wife, Alan must face various enemies, including chainsaw-wielding psychos and a paranormal entity called The Dark Presence, who possesses the townspeople and uses them as soldiers.

These soldiers, known as The Taken, can be defeated with torch lights. Unfortunately, the batteries used for the torches die very quickly – what then do you do?

Be careful where you walk because, in this perplexing world, inanimate objects can also come after you. I’m talking barrels, tractors, and other farm tools – nowhere is safe!

With its unending mystery, chilling atmosphere, top commentary tracks and soundtracks, Alan Wake Remastered presents veterans and newcomers with the opportunity to experience one of the best PS5 horror games in its most superb form.

DARQ: Complete Edition

  • Genre:  Puzzle, Stealth
  • Developers:  Unfold Games
  • PlayStation Release Date:  March 25, 2021
  • Average Playtime (Main Story/Objectives):  2 hours

We’ve all had our fair share of nightmares. Luckily, we’re able to wake up and continue our daily lives.

But what happens if you never wake up? What happens if this horror becomes a reality that you can never escape?

DARQ: Complete Edition is an adventure horror side-scroller published by Feardemic .

The original game, DARQ , was initially released in 2019 before this updated version was published for the PS4 in 2020 and PS5 in 2021.

The protagonist, Lloyd, is a lanky young boy who, one night, becomes aware that he is in a dream.

This dream soon becomes a nightmare, leaving the teenager with no choice but to explore a reality of strange phenomena while escaping dangers and solving puzzles in a desperate attempt to return to the real world.

Blessed by this lucid dream world with the ability to manipulate the laws of physics, Lloyd walks on walls while completing puzzles and fleeing enemies such as The Bad Guys and The Enemy.

Such foes will utterly destroy Lloyd in combat, so his only choice is to use stealth and sneak around their backs.

The complete edition consists of the original game and two DLCs, so there’s enough spooky content to keep you busy.

The atmosphere here is harrowing, and a minimalist soundtrack intensifies this tension. Navigating through Lloyd’s nightmares is definitely something to look forward to.

mundaun 1

  • Genre:  First-person shooter, Horror
  • Developers:  Hidden Fields
  • PlayStation Release Date:  March 16, 2021
  • Average Playtime (Main Story/Objectives):  6 hours, 30 minutes

Mundaun is a indie horror game published by American studio MWM Interactive .

The game is set in Mundaun, a real-life town located in Switzerland. However, in this game, you traverse the cursed version of this village through frozen mountain tops and concealed valleys.

As a player, you control Curdin, who travels to Mundaun for the burial of his grandfather. In an attempt to uncover the cause of his grandfather’s death, he encounters a sinister evil.

The game involves solving lots of puzzles, some of which are super uncanny, like when you have to hit hanging pieces of meat to form a musical sequence.

Most of your journey entails climbing up a mountain, and bit by bit, the game unfolds through solid storytelling, haunting picturesque scenes, and a foreboding atmosphere.

Mundaun is a beautiful and stylish pencil-drawn horror that descends into madness, providing disturbing and intriguing moments through dreamlike visions.

Its attractive visuals, tense atmosphere, and fitting soundtrack make for a memorable and hair-raising experience.

Observer: System Redux

  • Average Playtime (Main Story/Objectives):  7 hours

Bloober Team present us with another fine contender for the best horror games for PS5.

Observer: System Redux was released in 2020 as a refreshed version of the 2017 psychological horror game, Observer .

Although this is a horror game at its core, it is also fairly flexible in terms of where it fits in the spectrum of video game genres.

Much like Alan Wake Remastered , System Redux remains true to the original gameplay and storyline with a few improvements here and there.

The game takes place in Krakow, Poland in 2084, where you control detective Daniel Lazarski, a member of the Observers, a police force whose members have the ability to investigate people’s minds .

The game is set in a locked-down tenement building where drug addicts reside. After receiving a distress call from his son, Daniel makes his way to an apartment where he finds a decapitated body.

From there, he sets out on a journey through a labyrinth of horrors, hoping to find his son and uncover whatever enigmatic mystery is taking place.

Unlike the original game, which was less scary, this upgraded release dives deeper into an immense environment filled with unnerving intricacies, cavernous surroundings, and menacing enemies.

Other unique features include 3D audio and three extra side-quests that brilliantly fit into the tense atmosphere.

The PS5 has given the developers at Bloober Team the opportunity to reveal their true intentions with the game, and they gladly took it. 4K HDR running at 60fps looks and feels absolutely fantastic.

the quarry

  • Genre:  Interactive drama, Survival horror
  • Developers:  Supermassive Games
  • PlayStation Release Date:  June 10, 2022
  • Buy from:  PlayStation , Amazon
  • Multiplayer:  Local/Online multiplayer

British studio Supermassive Games has staked its claim as a dominant figure in the horror game genre.

Famous for creating the drama horror game Until Dawn , the studio once again delivered a delightfully horrifying experience in 2022’s The Quarry , published by 2K Games .

You assume the role of nine teenage camp counselors who have to spend their final night of summer camp stuck in Hackett’s Quarry.

However, they soon discover that this locale is haunted and filled with degenerate locals, monsters, and a mysterious creature, the same place they camped for two months, watching over younger kid campers.

You are left to make some difficult choices that may affect elements of the game, such as the plot, the character development, or even the finale.

What’s more is that by the time you discover you’ve made the wrong decision, it’s a bit too late.

If a monster lurks near you, holding your breath might be your only hope of survival. If you fail to execute this flawlessly, the next breath you take might be your last.

The game also features various modes like the Movie mode and Movie-only mode.

The Quarry is an excellent game whose key elements include the impact your decisions have on the gameplay.

It’s also pretty cool how the characters are played by popular actors like Brenda Song, Ted Raimi, Lance Henriksen, and several others who do an excellent job of enhancing the game’s appeal and delivering a fantastic performance.

Little Nightmares 2: Enhanced Edition

little nightmares 1

  • Genre:  Side-scroller, Puzzle, Platformer
  • PlayStation Release Date:  August 25, 2021
  • Average Playtime (Main Story/Objectives):  5 hours, 30 minutes

Little Nightmares II: Enhanced Edition is a side-scrolling horror game published by Bandai Namco Entertainment in 2021.

It is the prequel to the 2017 horror platformer, Little Nightmares .

This game introduces a whole new atmosphere filled with new characters and adventures while maintaining the unique game premise of its predecessor.

It involves two main characters – Six, the hero from the previous Little Nightmares game, and Mono, the protagonist who must embark on a journey to save Six’s life.

Mono must travel to a mysterious nightmare tower known as The Signal Tower, discover its secrets and prevent the source of evil from spreading further into the lands.

As he traverses a dangerous world, he conquers enemies, overcomes obstacles, and solves tricky puzzles.

At some point in the game, Mono meets up with Six, and together they flee from the creepy shotgun-wielding hunter who held Six prisoner.

Eventually, the two arrive in a horrifying city filled with hypnotizing television sets, ghostly children, rabid students, a long-necked teacher, and all sorts of creeps and oddballs.

The game’s graphics do a good job of giving off ominous vibes with grotesque aesthetics and dense visuals. Meanwhile, the sinister music and sound effects blend perfectly with the eerie surroundings.

If you’re looking for a horror-themed platformer, you’ve found it.

House of Ashes

house of ashes

  • PlayStation Release Date:  October 22, 2021
  • Multiplayer:  Local/Online co-op
  • Average Playtime (Main Story/Objectives):  6 hours

House of Ashes is an interactive and survival horror video game published by Bandai Namco Entertainment . It is the third main entry in The Dark Pictures Anthology series.

House of Ashes takes place in 2003 Iraq and uses the controversial war between the United States and Iraq as the perfect platform to build the game’s foundation.

In an attempt to discover Saddam Hussein’s nuclear weapons, a dysfunctional unit of the U.S army encounters some Iraqi fighters. Soon, both groups of soldiers are trapped in an underground temple.

The two teams have no choice but to cooperate if they want to successfully evade the sinister creatures lurking within this belowground facility.

Since the characters are soldiers, you can expect some combat along the way. The game also comes with cutscenes and four game modes, offering enough content to keep you occupied.

Just like in The Quarry – the other Supermassive Games production on this list – the decisions you make in House of Ashes determine the fate of the protagonists.

Another similarity between the two games is the use of famous actors – we hear the voices of superstars like Ashley Tisdale and Pip Torrens, among others, in Ashes. It seems the British studio has a thing for celebrities – To be fair, who doesn’t?

Overall, House of Ashes is a really good game. Its high-quality graphics and interesting albeit predictable storyline is worth experiencing.

Subnautica: Below Zero

  • Genre:  Action-adventure, Surrvival
  • Developers:  Unknown Worlds Entertainment
  • PlayStation Release Date:  May 14, 2021
  • Average Playtime (Main Story/Objectives):  20 hours

Interestingly, Subnautica: Below Zero initially served as just a DLC for the 2018 original Subnautica before it became a standalone product and served as a direct sequel to the original.

Now, I don’t think that this was intended to be an outright horror or scary game, but if you’re the kind of person that has a phobia for large bodies of water, or the fear of being underwater, then Subnautica: Below Zero will scare the living daylights out of you.

The game builds upon its predecessor cleverly, making the content unique and exciting. It is set in a vast alien ocean filled with weird-looking aquatic creatures.

As a player, your goal is to explore this strange open world , collect resources and tools for survival, engage in combat, and interact, if possible, with the creatures of the sea.

During your exploration, you have no idea what creatures are hiding in the deep, blackened waters, but as you dive deeper, you hear their dreadful sounds grow louder as though they are approaching you. However, each dive is accompanied by a sense of accomplishment and discovery.

Although most of the gameplay occurs underwater, you can also explore land-based frozen regions and structures to your heart’s content – an experience the game’s predecessor couldn’t offer players. Regulating your character’s temperature is of utmost importance.

The game utilizes stunning visuals and vibrant colors to highlight the beauty of the vast, immersive ocean world of unusual life forms.

The steady supply of new gadgets and vehicles is also something to look forward to. This is one game that won’t disappoint you provided you keep yourself warm.

Tormented Souls

tormented souls

  • Genre:  Adventure, Puzzle
  • Developers:  Dual Effect, Abstract Digital
  • PlayStation Release Date:  August 27, 2021
  • Buy from:  PlayStation ,  Third-Party
  • Multiplayer:  No
  • Average Playtime (Main Story/Objectives):  8 hours, 30 minutes

Tormented Souls is a survival horror video game published by PQube .

You assume the role of Caroline Walker, who heads down to a mysterious deserted building turned hospital after receiving a letter with a picture of two sisters.

Almost immediately after she arrives, she is knocked unconscious, and when she wakes up, she finds herself in a bathtub, with a tube down her throat and one of her eyes missing.

She has no choice but to explore this strange place and find out what the heck is going on while solving environmental puzzles and facing enemies.

The halls are dark and filled with dancing shadows, and the writings on the wall (literally) that say “do not let shadows embrace you” are enough to convince you that these beings should be avoided.

Much like The Medium , you get to explore two worlds, with mirrors serving as your portals between two dimensions.

Monsters hide in the dark, waiting for the perfect opportunity to pounce on you. Luckily, you have weapons and a dodge mechanic that can aid in battles.

Tormented Souls exhibits highly detailed locations using dynamic camera angles and modernized control schemes. It acknowledges survival horror games like Silent Hill and Resident Evil and draws elements from these classics to create a truly “tormenting” experience.

Martha is Dead

martha is dead

  • Genre:  Survival horror, Mystery
  • Developers:  LKA

The psychological horror game Martha is Dead comes from the stables of Italian developer LKA . Wired Productions published it in 2022.

The game is set in 1944 Tuscany during the war between the Axis Army and the Allied Forces.

Martha is a German soldier’s daughter whose desecrated body was found in the lake by her photographer sister Giulia.

Still struggling with the death of her beloved twin, Giulia sets out on a mission, determined to get to the bottom of this awful crime.

In a cutscene, we see Giulia in a dream sequence where she uses her dead sister’s necklace to peel off Martha’s face and wear it – a true identity thief.

Giulia’s camera is a vital part of the game. During her journey, she might have to take a picture or two and develop the film in the darkroom – it’s much more satisfying than it sounds.

You can participate in various activities – from solving morse codes to exploring dark forest regions and attending creepy long puppet shows.

There are also scenes where you ride a motorboat, wander through graveyards and interact with creatures like The White Lady.

War, suicide, torture, miscarriage, child abuse, Nazis – all these elements create an incredibly dark experience with surprising twists and heavily themed scenes.

This game contains some pretty disturbing content, but that’s part of what makes it one of the best horror games for PS5.

If you enjoy games like this one, then you should have a look at some nice mystery games as well. They’re more thought-provoking than spooky, but they share similar elements with some of the game in this guide.

Prepare to be entranced by the spectral allure of Orbit Studio and Atari’s Haunted House , a ghostly homage to the Atari classic that sends chills down your spine as you delve into a supernatural realm of Halloween-themed horror.

As Lyn Graves, the tenacious niece of the renowned treasure hunter Zachary Graves, you’ll find yourself within the ominous confines of her uncle’s mansion. But this is no ordinary visit. It’s a nightmarish journey to rescue your friends and uncle from a realm filled with ghouls, specters, and enigmatic entities that have spirited your companions away faster than a witch’s broomstick. The solution? Assemble the fragments of a shattered, sinister urn to unlock the secrets that dwell within.

haunted house games ps4

The game’s procedurally generated room layouts, elusive shifting walls, and ghostly ambushes guarantee that each descent into this haunted mansion is a unique horror show. You’ll find yourself creeping, sneaking, and dashing through frightful confrontations with supernatural foes, all while searching for your missing friends and uncle. Each urn shard is guarded by a bone-chilling boss, and the 3D isometric stealth gameplay will have you tiptoeing on the edge of your gaming seat. And when, inevitably, you fall victim to a shadowy apparition, you’ll awaken at the mansion’s entrance, facing a completely reconfigured layout and new eerie entities. Atari’s trick-or-treat twist on the classic gameplay is enough to raise the dead.

Haunted House also unleashes roguelike elements, adding layers of terror and unpredictability to the classic formula. So, if you think you can outsmart the spirits and ghouls, be prepared for a frightful surprise with every playthrough. The art style, eerily whimsical and cartoonish, may deceive at first glance, but don’t be fooled – this game knows how to serve up genuine terror. With its predominantly stealth-based gameplay and spine-tingling combat sequences, it strikes the perfect balance between playful and spine-chilling.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a true Atari adventure without an eerie surprise. Haunted House is teeming with collectibles and lore inspired by the original Haunted House and other classic Atari classics. It’s a delightful nod to the spectral spirits of gaming’s bygone days, ensuring that even the most seasoned ghost hunters will find something to bewitch their spirits.

haunted house games ps4

In Haunted House, combat takes a backseat, putting the emphasis on stealthy maneuvering, enigmatic puzzle-solving in the darkest corners, and the cunning use of traps and items to evade the ghoulies. Collecting gems to bolster your spectral abilities and unearth hidden perks is your ticket to becoming a more formidable ghost hunter during your next venture into the haunted labyrinth.

Review – Haunted House

haunted house games ps4

A lot of you may have never even heard of this game, but I was actually looking forward to replaying Haunted House , a reboot of an Atari 2600 classic, widely considered to be the first (ish) survival horror game of all time. I had the chance of previewing the game a while back, at BIG Festival 2023 , as well as interviewing one of its developers . All that was missing was getting my hands on the final product, touted to be a brand new take on the series after a disastrous reboot attempt in the mid-2010s, and see if it was worth the wait.

Haunted House lamp

Your lamp is your most trustworthy weapon… and it’s still weak as hell.

As previously mentioned, Haunted House is indeed a roguelite, but one with a lesser emphasis on combat. In this game, you control one of many kids trapped inside a haunted mansion, a place cursed with a spell that makes its rooms constantly change layouts with each new run. Each room contains a puzzle. Solve that puzzle, and the door to the next room is unlocked, and all enemies inside of the current room are destroyed, becoming currency which can be exchanged for in-run upgrades. You can also collect rare gems which can be exchanged for permanent upgrades for your character in the mansion’s lobby.

The emphasis on combat might be lessened, but it’s not nonexistent. It’s just that you only have access to a few traps and a magical lamp that can defeat enemies like a Ghostbusters proton pack, but there are two issues: traps are finite items located at random (and at small quantities), and your lamp is stupidly slow, whilst enemies are fast and bulky. If possible, sneak past enemies. Their lines of sight are always visible, and you also have access to a few stealth-based buffs. Health and ammo are scarce during runs, so be careful. Haunted House is not a hard roguelite by any means, but it’s not a cake walk, either.

Haunted House disguise

Don’t mind me, I’m clearly a very dead ghost, just coming through.

Furthermore, the combat could have received a little more polish. It’s not bad, but given how Haunted House is presented in an isometric perspective, aiming and throwing your traps can be tricky at times, especially when there’s more than one enemy near you. The game tends to automatically direct you towards the nearest foe, even when that’s not exactly who you want to get rid of first.

So you know the drill: keep exploring the mansion, obtain items, get defeated, cash in on your permanent upgrade currency, start another run with improved stats, and try to make to the end of the section, where you might be able to unlock a new character after beating a boss. There is also the possibility of looking for classic Atari cartridges scattered throughout the mansion (don’t ask why, maybe the ghosts are really into Combat or Yars’ Revenge ), which can be handed over to a nerdy kid who also inexplicably lives in one of the rooms in the titular haunted house.

Haunted House butler

A butler? Well then, we now know who’s the murderer in this mansion.

This isn’t a mind-blowing gameplay loop, but Haunted House isn’t trying to be Hades or anything like that. Its appeal is the fact it’s mostly centered around stealth and slight puzzle solving. It is a bit annoying at first, given how utterly frail your protagonist is, but it doesn’t take long until you’re able to upgrade your health and the power of your lamp. In fact, I was able to cash in on both after a mere run. This is when the game becomes more interesting and more replayable. There’s enough room variety to ensure multiple playthroughs, and the progression system is fair enough to motivate you to play “just one more round”.

It’s a good thing that Haunted House features a somewhat appealing gameplay loop, because it’s not going to win anyone over with its presentation. Again, it doesn’t look bad, with cute, hand-drawn visuals, but it’s a bit cheap and repetitive to look at. I assume the game didn’t have a big developmental budget to begin with, as all of its cutscenes were completely static, and there’s no voice acting, or even voice clips, to begin with. Thankfully, whilst the theme song is played ad nauseum, it’s good enough to never get on your nerves. It sounded a bit Scooby-Doo -ish, and that’s never a bad thing.

Haunted House Tobias

I have so many questions I don’t even know where to begin…

Haunted House overcomes its low budget aesthetics and occasional lack of polish with a simple, but unique gameplay loop featuring elements from roguelikes, stealth games, puzzlers, and survival horrors (well, the PG kind of survival horror). It just features enough room and puzzle variety, as well as decent progression system, to keep you wanting to play just one more round, just to see if you can finally beat that one annoying boss, or if you can find another Atari cartridge to hand over to that nerdy kid at the lobby. By no means the most impressive roguelite title out there, but a decent return to form to a franchise so heavily mistreated in the past.

Haunted House is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Atari VCS.
