Playboy Playmate and “Ghostbusters” actress Kymberly Herrin has died at 65.

Herrin passed away peacefully in her home in Santa Barbara, California, Oct. 28, according to an obituary in the Santa Barbara News-Press .

Herrin’s niece, Theresa Ramirez, shared a photo on Facebook of her aunt with her two late sisters and the caption: “They are all together now. Aunt Kymberly Herrin. I love you.”

Herrin was a model and actress, appearing on several magazine covers as well as in movies, including her memorable part as the Dream Ghost in 1984’s “Ghostbusters” — notably in an infamous, sensual scene with Dan Aykroyd’s character Ray Stantz.

Kymberly Herrin

Herrin — who also appeared in that year’s “Romancing the Stone,” which starred Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito — is additionally remembered as one of a handful of models who strut their stuff in the music video for ZZ Top’s hit song “Legs.”

The model was featured on the cover of Playboy’s September 1982 and September 1983 issues. Herrin served as Playmate of the Month for Playboy’s March 1981 edition. She also played a Playmate in the 1987 film “Beverly Hills Cop II.”

A cause of death has not been revealed, but the family asked for donations to the American Cancer Society in Herrin’s honor “to further the research of the prevention and treatment of breast cancer.”

R.I.P. Kymberly Herrin, Ghostbuster's "Dream Ghost" and ZZ Top vixen

Kymberly herrin, a former playboy playmate, had roles in romancing the stone and road house.

Dan Aykroyd and Kymberly Herrin in Ghostbusters

Kymberly Herrin, the actor who starred as the sensual “Dream Ghost” in 1984's Ghostbusters , has died at the age of 65. Herrin passed away peacefully in her sleep, according to her niece, per   Consequence .

Herrin is likely best remembered for her onscreen roles as fleeting femme fatales, whether the ethereal ghost who gracefully seduces Dan Aykroyd in Ghostbusters or the latex-clad video vixen who dominates ZZ Top’s “Legs” music video. Also a former Playboy Playmate, Herrin won “Playmate Of The Month” in March 1981.

Recalling the “Dream Ghost” scene in a 2013 conversation with Polygon , Aykroyd shared he remembered Herrin well and wished production had “let that scene go a little longer.” As Herrin herself told Noblemania in 2013, she and Aykroyd had partied together on both coasts, leaving her with “great memories” of being shown around New York.

In her eyes, Herrin’s work for ZZ Top, which led to her work with Playboy, got her even more recognition than Ghostbusters . She also nabbed roles throughout her career in Road House , Romancing The Stone , and Beverly Hills Cop II .

“Once in Australia, a young boy, knowing I was an American model, flipped when he recognized me,” she recalled in the interview. “He said that ZZ Top just won MTV’s Best Group Video [1984]. The Aussies treated me like an American movie star. I was blown away.”

After “Legs,” Herrin also went on to star in another ZZ Top video, “Sleeping Bag,” and David Lee Roth’s “California Girls” clip. She also worked with KISS for the band’s long-form video Exposed — Herrin praised “one of a kind” frontman Billy Gibbons for having a “certain sweet, rare charm.”

“Billy Gibbons was my favorite [member of ZZ Top],” she shared. “We became good friends later. He gave me the video on tape.”

An obituary for Herrin, a native Californian, in The Santa Barbara News-Press   further elucidates some of the less-public aspects of her life, including a deep love for sailing and travel. For several years of her life, Herrin reportedly lived aboard a 75-foot yacht, which allowed her to travel along the California Coast, through the Panama Canal, in the Sea of Cortez, in Baja, and into the Caribbean.

Although her cause of death was not revealed,   The News-Press urged those hoping to honor Herrin’s memory to donate to the American Cancer Society to “further the research of the prevention and treatment of breast cancer.” Herrin is survived by her mother, brother, as well as multiple nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Kymberly Herrin, who played Ghostbusters’ seductive Dream Ghost, passes away at 65

kymberly herrin ghostbusters dream ghost

We’ve just received some unfortunate news as it’s been confirmed that Ghostbusters actress Kymberly Herrin passed away late last month at age 65 following a battle with breast cancer.

Herrin, who had an established career in modeling, even serving as the Playmate of the Month in the March 1981 issue of Playboy Magazine, will likely best be known for her role in Ghostbusters , playing the Dream Ghost, a seductive apparition that Dan Aykroyd’s character Ray Stantz encounters during the film’s montage.

Herrin’s character was initially set to play a more significant role within the film, serving as Stantz’s otherworldly love interest, with the scenes being filmed as a part of the eventual deleted Fort Detmerring sequence.

kymberly herrin ghostbusters dream ghost

As part of the book Ghostbusters: The Ultimate Visual History , Harold Ramis explained the concept behind the character, along with the sequence getting repurposed, saying:

“The idea behind the scene was to give Dan a love interest — a woman who’s been dead for a hundred years. But the scene was too long and it was in the wrong place in the film.”

Aykroyd also talks about the scene, referring to Herrin’s character as the seduction ghost .

“I don’t miss anything that we didn’t use. The ghost in the fort — the seduction ghost — in paranormal research that’s a common thing, ghosts doing sexual things to people. I have a friend who had three women visit him in a haunted house in Louisiana, and it was one of the greatest nights of his life. But in under two hours, you obviously can’t have everything.

Alongside Ghostbusters , Herrin’s other film roles include Romancing the Stone, Road House, and Beverly Hills Cop II.

We here at Ghostbusters News offer our condolences to Herrin’s family and friends, along with thanking longtime reader Matthew Ballard for providing us the heads on the passing.

Ghostbusters actress and Playboy model Kymberly Herrin dies aged 65

Credit: Theresa Ramirez/Facebook

Ghostbusters actress and former Playboy model Kymberly Herrin has died.

In an obituary published on Tuesday in the Santa Barbara News Press , it was confirmed Herrin had "passed away peacefully" on 28 October at the age of 65.

Herrin found fame as a model, including featuring on the cover of Playboy magazine, as well as starring in 1984's Ghostbusters and Romancing the Stone.

In Ghostbusters, Herrin played the Dream Ghost, featuring in an intimate scene with Ray.

Herrin played Angelina in Romancing the Stone, before starring as a Playboy Playmate in Beverly Hills Cop II,   and featuring in ZZ Top's music video for their song Legs.

The obituary did not give a cause of death, but asked readers to "make a donation in Kym’s memory to the American Cancer Society to further the research of the prevention and treatment of breast cancer."

It added she was a lifelong Santa Barbara resident and a "beautiful woman inside and out."

In a Facebook post on 28 October, Herrin's niece Theresa Ramirez posted that her aunt was now reunited with her two older sisters, pictured together on a beach.

“They are all together now. Aunt Kymberly Herrin. I love you,” the photo was captioned.

The obituary said Kymberly is survived by her mother and brother, as well as other relatives. It added she will be "sorely missed by all that knew and loved her."

Kymberly Herrin, Dan Aykroyd’s Ghostbusters Dream Ghost, Dies at 65

The Playboy model and actress known for her brief appearance in 1984’s Ghostbusters passed away peacefully at home.

Actress and model Kymberly Herrin has died at the age of 65, according to an obituary published by the Santa Barbara New-Press . While the name Kymberly Herrin may not instantly ring a bell for most people, fans of 1984’s Ghostbusters will know her as the alluring ghost that makes Dan Aykroyd’s Ray smile during a somewhat risky dream sequence in the middle of the movie. While her cause of death has not been revealed, the obituary states that she died peacefully at home on October 28, and family have asked for donations to the American Cancer Society to “further the research of the prevention and treatment of breast cancer.”

Although Herrin also gained fame as a Playboy Playmate, and starred in other movies such as Beverley Hills Cop II – coincidentally playing a Playboy Playmate – and Romancing the Stone , it was her very brief but memorable appearance in Ghostbusters that most movie lovers will remember her for. In a scene forming part of a montage in the movie, Dan Aykroyd’s Ray Stantz dreams of being in a medieval castle bedroom, where a ghost wearing an ethereal white dress , played by Herrin, hovers above him before vanishing. A moment later, the scene takes a turn as the ghostbuster’s trouser belt is unbuckled by unseen hands, and the camera cuts away to Ray’s face as his flies are undone. While the scene was a risky joke for a PG movie, it was subtle enough to go over the heads of younger audiences, but was cut from some TV broadcasts of the movie for many years.

Who Was Kymberly Herrin?

Like many models who have had fleeting movie careers, there are many people who simply won’t know who Kymberly Herrin was. Born in 1957 in Santa Barbara, Herrin was of mixed French-Swedish-Filipino descent. After graduating, Herrin’s appearance led her into modeling, and in 1981 she was March’s Playboy Playmate of the Month, and she graced the cover of the magazine again in September 1982 and 1983. She modeled for Ralph Lauren, as well for swimwear and fitness magazines before appearing as Angelina in the prologue of Romancing the Stone in 1984. Her appearances in Ghostbusters, Beverley Hills Cop II and a short role in Road House were her only movie appearances, but she did also make a big impact in ZZTop’s ‘ Legs ’ music video along with fellow models Daniele Arnaud and Jeana Keough.

Following the actress’ death, her niece shared an image on her Facebook account, showing her Aunt with her two late sisters, and commented, “They are all together now. Aunt Kymberly Herrin. I love you.” While Herrin may not be the biggest film star to have passed away this year, there are very few people who have watched the movie Ghostbusters and do not remember her several seconds on screen. For anyone to have a role that iconic that it is still well-remembered forty years later, then that is someone who has earned their place among the many gone but not forgotten stars of Hollywood. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time.

Kymberly Herrin, Playboy Model Known for ‘Ghostbusters’ and ZZ Top’s “Legs” Video, Dead at 65

Kymberly Herrin, a Playboy model who appeared in the original  Ghostbusters film, has died. She was 65.

Herrin died Oct. 28, according to an obituary published in the  Santa Barbara News-Press , which states that the actress “passed away peacefully” at home in Santa Barbara.

No additional details or cause of death were immediately available.

Herrin, who  grew up in Santa Barbara and graduated from the city’s Santa Barbara High School in 1975, began her career as a model and appeared in multiple film and television projects, most notably 1984’s  Ghostbusters , in which she played the movie’s Dream Ghost.

In one memorable scene, Herrin pays a visit to Ray Stantz ( Dan Aykroyd ) in his dreams, floating over him as he sleeps in the firehouse.

The same year that  Ghostbusters  premiered, Herrin also appeared in  Romancing the Stone ,  the Robert Zemeckis action-comedy starring Michael Douglas, Danny DeVito and Kathleen Turner. Herrin, who was credited in the film as Kym Herrin, played the character of Angelina.

Herrin’s other acting credits over the years include  St. Elsewhere , in which she played Hawkins’ Dream; Moving Violations,  in which she played Queen; Beverly Hills Cop II , which saw her play her real-life role of Playboy Playmate; and Road House , in which she played a Party Girl.

While she was featured in some of the biggest hits of the ’80s, Herrin was also a regular in music videos of the decade, working with big-name bands like ZZ Top. She appeared in three music videos for the band, working with them on “Gimme All Your Lovin,'” “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Legs.” Herrin also appeared in a music video for KISS, acting in the group’s video for “eXposed.”

Ghostbusters star and former Playboy model Kymberly Herrin has died at the age of 65, it has been confirmed.

The Santa Barbara News-Press announced in an obituary on Tuesday (15th November) that Herrin died "peacefully" on 28th October in Santa Barbara, California.

The obituary described her as a “beautiful woman inside and out”.

Herrin rose to fame as a model, featuring on the covers of dozens of magazines and modelling for Ralph Lauren.

She famously featured on the cover of Playboy’s September 1982 issue as well as the following year’s magazine.

She went on to star in several movies, including Romancing the Stone and the original 1984 Ghostbusters starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Harold Ramis and Sigourney Weaver, in which she played the Dream Ghost during a scene with Aykroyd’s character Ray Stantz.

In 1987, Herrin also starred as a Playboy Playmate in Beverly Hills Cop II alongside Eddie Murphy, and appeared in ZZ Top’s music video for Legs.

The obituary did not specify a cause of death, but asked readers to "make a donation in Kym’s memory to the American Cancer Society to further the research of the prevention and treatment of breast cancer".

The obituary said Herrin is survived by her mother Billie Dodson, her brother Mark Herrin, nieces Theresa Ramirez and Stephanie Ross, as well as other relatives, adding she will be "sorely missed by all that knew and loved her".

On Facebook , the star's niece, Theresa Ramirez, shared an emotional tribute following the tragic news of Herrin's passing, in which she said that her aunt is now reunited with her late sisters.

“They are all together now. Aunt Kymberly Herrin. I love you,” Ramirez wrote alongside the photo, in which Herrin could be seen sitting alongside her two older sisters.

The post has been met with many people sharing their condolences over Herrin's passing, with one person writing: “She was so special to so many people, I am not sure she knew how many people loved and adored her.

History [ ]

Primary canon [ ].

While the Ghostbusters had some downtime and slept in the Firehouse sleeping quarters, Ray Stantz dreamed about an encounter with the Dream Ghost.

Secondary Canon [ ]

Deleted scene [ ].

A couple weeks after getting the call from a park ranger stationed at Fort Detmerring , Ray Stantz and Winston Zeddemore arrived to investigate. The ghost was a problem for quite some time and was never talked about openly before the Ghostbusters was established. Ray and Winston split up to cover more ground. When Ray fell asleep in the Single Officers' Quarters dressed in period clothing, the Dream Ghost appeared to him and performed fellatio. [2]

Insight Editions [ ]

Fort Detmerring was infamous for being haunted by a Dream Ghost. She was rumored to be the ghost of an officer's girlfriend when the fort was a fully functioning military stronghold. [3] It was observed the ghost frequented certain rooms, including the officer's quarters. A sign of its presence in a room was the palpable feeling of exhaustion comparable to not sleeping for days and leaving the room immediately reversed the effect. [4] The ghost could only fully manifest on the physical plane in the presence of a sleeping person. [5] After the Ghostbusters conducted extensive research, it was concluded the Dream Ghost was benign and not of any danger to the general public. Despite that ruling, Ray decided to continue to monitor the fort regularly. [6]

Classification [ ]

The Dream Ghost is an anchored Class IV Noncorporeal. [7]

Primary Canon Powers [ ]

The Dream Ghost has displayed the standard abilities of a ghost, including flight and rendering itself invisible.

Secondary Canon (Expanded Universe) Powers [ ]

The Dream Ghost can take on the form of a pink cloud or mist. [8] [9]

  • The ghost was intended to be Ray's love interest in the movie, but it was deemed extraneous and cut to keep up the pace. [10]
  • In the 8/5/1983 script , Ray admits he's in love with the Dream Ghost, who's been dead for 150 years. [1]
  • Kym Herrin filmed her scenes at Entertainment Effects Group then the crew added optical effects and composited her into the Fort Deterring set. [11]
  • Due to the tight fitting gossamer gown, Kym Herrin was fitted for a mold. The crew had to put Vaseline all over her body but were being "delicate." Sensing that approach would take too long, Herrin grabbed one of the crewmen and placed his hand on one of her breasts and said, 'Let's get on with this!' [12]
  • The action of the Dream Ghost unzipping Ray's pants was originally intended to be a composite that entailed combining a live action shot with a pair of self-unzipping pants. Due to the production schedule, it ended up being shot as a straight 35mm insert. [13]
  • On page 182 of Ghostbusters: The Supernatural Spectacular , it is noted the Dream Ghost is fascinated with Ray, asleep in a Revolutionary War officer's uniform. [14]

Appearances [ ]

  • Chapter 14: Welcome Aboard
  • Deleted Scene: The Fort Detmerring Ghost
  • Alluded to on page 19 by Peter Venkman [15]
  • Alluded to on Dramatis Personae Page in Ray's biography [16]
