Merlin’s Heritage

In the mid-1970s, Soquel yacht designer Bill Lee had a vision and threw conventional design and boat building to the wind. Bill wanted to build boats light enough to catch wind waves which would make sailing much faster and more fun. The slogan “Fast is Fun” was born for these Santa Cruz line of boats. The popular Santa Cruz 27 was the first of these wave-catching boats.

Offshore racing is deeply embedded in the sailing culture of California. The most sought after offshore race on the West coast is the Transpac. In 1977 Bill designed and built a narrow and extremely light 68-foot boat named Merlin . Bill, and his crew of seven, raced his 68-foot creation in the Transpac, riding down the faces of waves that previously would have escaped over the horizon.

Merlin and two competitors, Ragtime and Drifter, were revolutionary boats in 1977 with their long, narrow and lightweight design that could pierce through the small waves. Merlin slid down the large North Pacific swells with speed and grace and it earned Bill the nickname “Wizard.”

During the 1977 Transpac, the boats sailed through squalls in the evening where gusty winds would launch them through the backs of the waves. Surprisingly Bill states, “The boat was easy to sail and the good guys were always able to keep her going.” In eight days and 11 hours, Merlin and her crew arrived in Honolulu setting a new record that stood for 20 years, beating Drifter by 17 minutes.

Santa Cruz Yachts, founded by Bill Lee, has a 35-year history of designing and building sailing yachts. The emphasis has been on ultra-light high performance racing designs generally offering amenities for long distance voyages. Santa Cruz Yachts has produced award-winning designs and these boats have performed well in racing including long distance ocean racing.

In 1977 the 66-foot (20 m) Merlin was considered unseaworthy by critics, however, the boat proved to be capable of 28 knots (52 km/h) surfing, and won the 1977 Transpacific Yacht Race from California to Hawaii in record time with an average speed of 11 knots (20 km/h) over 2,250 miles. In 1981 Merlin again won the Transpac, but this time seven of the top ten finishes were the Santa Cruz 50, a scaled down production version of Merlin. A 50-foot (15 m) Santa Cruz yacht weighs about 16,000 pounds with half of that weight in the ballast of the keel; this is very light compared to the 30,000 pounds normally associated with a 50-foot (15 m) boat.

Memories of Merlin

Skip Allan , crewmember: “ Merlin has always been a ‘people boat’ and the more the merrier. A Wednesday night crew in Santa Cruz of 35 to 45 was not uncommon, and if Bill didn’t cast off promptly at 5:30 p.m., more would have climbed aboard. Bill would sip brandy in the cabin and watch the action through the windows. One of the favorite activities for guests was to climb into the narrow bow of the boat and position their backs on one side of the hull and their knees on the other. Going to weather, the bow would flex and pant, squeezing you gently in a fetal hug.”

“Before the 1977 TransPac, race safety inspector Hays McClellan wanted all the requirements meticulously adhered to by this new rogue boat. As he went down the list, he stopped at the motoring requirement. ‘OK, I want to see this boat motor at 8 knots,’ he boomed. Dave Wahle cast off the docklines and, with Hayes aboard, roared down Santa Cruz Harbor at 8 knots backwards. The winter sandbar blocked the entrance, so when Merlin reached the end of the harbor, Dave spun the wheel. Merlin turned on a dime, nearly throwing Hayes overboard. They then motored triumphantly in reverse, back to the slip. Hayes quickly checked off the rest of the safety items and bemusedly fled this craziness.”

Harvey Kilpatrick, crewmember in 1977 TransPac: “When we left Los Angeles after the start of the race, we still weren’t sure how fast we could go. At the finish, we were all wound pretty tight. We had a drink and the crew disappeared. Bill and I were just blown away by the whole thing. It didn’t hit us what we had done until the next morning.”

Dem Smith, charterer for 1983 TransPac: “ Merlin is the most incredible ride I’ve ever had. Sometimes I think of her as 67 feet of sheer terror. My job was jibing the pole and the first time I did it I found myself underwater with the wire guys dragging across the face. I immediately thought there had to be a better way to do it. I shortened the tether on my harness to three feet and fastened it to a deadbolt on the foredeck so I wouldn’t get swept away every time she dove. I literally did every jibe during that race underwater.”

Jim Antrim, yacht designer: “There’s a photo of Merlin at the Santa Cruz YC that shows her sailing under this huge kite. With her low freeboard and narrow hull, Merlin has always represented the minimal life support system needed for a spinnaker. She really started the West Coast downwind racing scene.”

George Olson, crew and fellow Santa Cruz boatbuilder/designer: “We were one of four couples who sailed Merlin back after the 1977 TransPac. It was during that trip that we had conversations about building a 30 footer that became Pacific High, which was the prototype for the Olson 20. Building a 70-footer was just beyond me or anyone else in Santa Cruz at the time. Merlin stands alone as an effort to see how fast we can really go.”

Review of Merlin

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all. Some boats has a hull made of Wood.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Merlin is about 39 kg/cm, alternatively 219 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 39 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 219 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

CLIPPER CITY

The original Clipper City was built as a cargo schooner in 1854, just prior to the Civil War. Rebuilt and refurbished from the original plans which were borrowed from the Smithsonian Institution, at 158 feet, the Clipper City is an epic venue to host up to 149 guests on a sailing adventure around New York Harbor. Parties and events on our historic tall ships are absolutely breathtaking.

This is an experience I highly recommend and I'll definitely do again with friends. I booked this for a corporate group outing. It was a great summer Friday excursion with the best view of the city and statue of liberty you won't get on land. Drinks, lite bites, and the Hudson. If you're visiting NYC - Add this to your Things to Do list. If you live in the city, do yourself a favor and experience it in a new way. You'll leave feeling happy to live in such a majestic city.

Absolutely brilliant. Booked the shearwater lady liberty cruise through my New York Explorer pass so wasn't sure what to expect. When we got there was greeted by informative staff and the boat is truly beautiful a restored 1920s schooner. When on board the staff are lovely, gave us blankets and ponchos as it was slightly chilly and the odd spot of rain. Pointed things of interest out to us while on board and kept the great selection of drinks flowing. Brilliant, would recommend.

If you’re going to do a boat trip to see the Statue of Liberty why wouldn’t you choose a historic sailing vessel rather than one of the uninspiring motor boats? Being on a sailing ship with the sails up really adds to the experience. The crew are friendly and engaging and will encourage you to get involved in raising the sails, if you want to.

What a perfect way to enjoy the Upper New York Bay. Great company and both my girlfriend and myself were amazed that all the other boats were so over crowded and ours was perfect. Best way to see the bay and Statue of Liberty. No horrid motor sounds nice music played and drinks on hand friendly staff. Trust us go with this company and you won’t regret it. All the other boats had a frantic experience but ours was heavenly.

Both the ship and the crew were awesome! We especially liked the freedom to move around the entire ship from start to finish. Also not having it narrated turned out to be a plus - it was much nicer to just have informal talks with any of the crew members - they were all very nice and very knowledgeable. They engage volunteers to help and my son really had a great time helping to hoist the sail!

This boat was recommended by some friends & they were spot-on. Loved every aspect of the cruise & enjoyed having a chat with one of the crew members. Had a few cold beers on board too. By far the best value of anything we did in New York, which we found a very expensive city.

Despite being in the nearby area for the past three years this was my first time doing a sail around NYC. I bought tickets on a whim to surprise my boyfriend on a romantic excursion and it was honestly so much fun. The day was really cloudy and cold, but they provide blankets, which is convenient for those who didn’t come prepared. We purchased tickets for the cider tasting/sail, the drinks were good and we were also provided food. The staff were friendly and accommodating and we got really amazing views of the city, I was very happy with our experience.

This has to be the best way to have an enjoyable sail past Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. You can take the incredibly cost-effective Staten Island ferry which zooms past or the organized and rammed tourist boats from Battery Park, which aren’t much slower. Only the clipper yacht passes closely in a duration which gives everyone plenty of time to stare in amazement and get all the photos you need. Our next visit will be with these guys on another one of their sailing tours. A must-do.

Excellent, relaxing cruise around the harbor including a great view of the Statue of Liberty! The weather was perfect and it was a fantastic way to end a hectic day of traveling. My daughter and I enjoyed wine as we sat on the deck and let the gentle breeze overtake us!

We've been on the Shearwater Brunch Cruise 3 times, & once on the Clipper City Beer/Lobster Roll Cruise. Excellent quality food & beverages, friendly & professional staff. I prefer sailing on the Shearwater since it's smaller & I like the more "intimate" experience. Can't say enough good things about Manhattan by Sail & I can't wait to go on another sail!

The Clipper City schooner cruise should be on every NYC visitor's list! We four travelers took a leisurely, exciting, and informative sail around the Statue of Liberty and can't wait to do it again. The captain and crew were personable, professional, and took excellent care of their passengers. It's also really easy to find. What a great experience and it was my 16 year old grandson's very favorite activity during our July trip! It's tops in customer service, communication, and it's TOPS on my to-do list for our next NYC trip!

A friend of ours suggested we try this and it did not disappoint! We had taken a ferry trip last time we were in New York and I have to say the sail boat is definitely the way to go! The staff were all so friendly and work SO hard. Views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan were incredible! A really super experience!

The Schooner Adirondack

This elegant, white-hulled, 80-foot, 1890s-style pilot schooner is a gem in New York Harbor. Schooner Adirondack has been sailing these waters since 1999.  She features seating for up to 49, teak decks and impressive mahogany trim.  An open salon below deck features a marine restroom, bar services, storage and functions as a space to escape the elements.

Schooner Adirondack has been the fastest resident sail vessel in the New York Harbor for the past decade. She held the record finish in the Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race for 12 consecutive years and continues to demonstrate speed and a thrilling ride for her guests in New York Harbor.

The Schooner Adirondack runs an 8-month season in NYC starting in April and ending in November.

JUSTINE YACHT

Justine is a 97 ft luxurious private charter yacht based in New York City. She hosts up to 12 guests for day and evening cruises, and can accommodate eight overnight in four staterooms. The yacht has an elegant and spacious main deck salon, full service bar, formal dining room, and fully equipped galley. There is an aft deck observation area and seating, upper deck outdoor area with lounge seating and 360 degree views, and spacious sun pad on the bow. Located throughout the yacht is a premier sound system, controllable by guests' Bluetooth device, as well as satellite HDTVs. The interior was completely rebuilt in 2010 and is continually and meticulously updated.

JULIETTE YACHT

Juliette is a unique yacht in New York Harbor - a boat that was built to be a private luxury yacht, then later upgraded to US Coast Guard Specifications to carry up to 40 passengers. This is the only boat in NYC with a Private Yacht feel and ambience that can legally take more than 12 passengers. Q What is different about your company?

Although everything that floats in New York City is marketed as a "luxury private yacht," Zenith actually owns and operates high-end, beautifully maintained yachts. Our photos, videos, and TV clips are accurate. For ten years, Zenith has served a global elite of CEOs, celebrities, and VIPs from the highest echelons of power. We are the top of the market. We encourage you to visit and see the yachts you are interested in yourselves, and compare. Please ask any local charter agent about our reputation.

Q Who will be on the yacht with us?

All cruises will have a minimum of three crewmembers aboard to assure your safe and enjoyable cruise. A Captain will helm the yacht at all times. All of our captains bring a lifetime of experience and are happy to answer questions and share stories. Two mates will assure safe docking and while aboard will assist guests with comfort, food, and beverages. Cruises booked with a private chef, bartender, or NYC tourguide will have these in addition.

Q Justine is a huge yacht! What is up with the 12 guest limit??

It's the law! The Justine is a private yacht. Under federal regulations any private boat taking paying passengers is only allowed SIX GUESTS, or TWELVE GUESTS for much larger boats – like the Justine - generally over 80 ft long. There are no exceptions; no passenger can be a "friend" or "crewmember" other than paid staff such as your event photographer, tourguide, or wedding officiant. Children do count as passengers. Our company is fully licensed and insured to take guests in a safe and compliant manner. We have been in business over 10 years. Charterers should be VERY wary of any operator telling you to put down excess passengers as "crew" or offering a "bareboat" contract in which the guests claim to be hiring the crew and taking liability for the cruise. None of that is legal nor insured. The Juliette is a unique vessel in NYC - an actual private luxury yacht which has been upgraded to meet Coast Guard commercial standards and legal for up to 40 guests. It still offers a private yacht look and feel.

Q I represent a client who has special security and privacy concerns.

We have broad experience in handling these concerns. All of our guests are entitled to 100% privacy and discretion. We never share any guest information. Crew do not carry phones or cameras. Private and diplomatic security personnel are welcome to travel with guests. Please contact us with any specific concerns or NDA's.

Q What can I bring?

Comfortable shoes and clothing and non-spray sunscreen. Cameras, phones, chargers. We will have towels, ice, and nonalcoholic beverages for every cruise. High heels and shoes with hard black soles are not allowed. Please do not bring any pollution hazards such as confetti, glitter, or streamers; fire hazards such as sparklers. hookahs, fireworks, or sternos; messy food items such as stews, soups, curries, chicken wings, ice cream cakes, bloody mary's, etc.

Q Can we bring children?

Yes, you are welcome to bring your children - HOWEVER they must be under constant adult supervision. We highly recommend bringing your nanny.

Q Can we bring pets?

We do not permit any pets aboard, other than authorized service animals assisting guests with a disability. We love furry guests but keep in mind they get scared, confused, and seasick on yachts.

Q Is there Wi-Fi?

Q What is the music situation?

Both yachts have speakers on all decks. Stereo systems play XM/Sirius radio or guests can Bluetooth their favorite music. You can bring a DJ with their own equipment as well.

Q Do I have to remove shoes aboard?

We do allow guests to wear their shoes aboard. We recommend comfortable options such as sandals or sneakers. High heels and mens' dress shoes with hard black soles are not permitted.

Q Are any parts of the yacht off-limits?

Guests are not allowed into the engine room or other clearly-marked restricted areas. However, anyone who wants an educational tour of the engines and machinery of the yacht is welcome to request this of the captain before or after a cruise. Staterooms with attached bathrooms are available on both yachts for private conversations, changing, hair/makeup, etc.

Q Where do you sail from? Where do you go?

Our home dock is Newport a private and upscale marina in the heart of the Jersey City Waterfront. It is located directly across the Holland Tunnel from Manhattan with PATH Train and garage parking onsite. We can pickup and dropoff guests at Chelsea Piers, North Cove (World Financial District), Dyckman Marina in uptown Manahttan, Liberty State Park (Jersey City), and One15 downtown Brooklyn Marina for varying fees. We can also serve the Hudson River Valley, Long Island, Connecticut and the Hamptons. Our typical 3 cruise covers all of Manhattan's iconic skyline, including the Empire State Building, Freedom Tower, Intrepid, Brooklyn Bridge, Ellis Island, and a close-up at the Statue of Liberty. Full day cruises can explore the Northern Hudson Valley, Sandy Hook, or Long Island Sound. The Hamptons, Montauk, Mystic, Newport RI, and Block Island require multiday bookings.

Q Which times/dates are available or recommended?

All of our cruises are custom and yachts are available any time, any day. Holidays and weekends are generally booked early. Some guests prefer spending all day under the sun, others prefer watching the city lights from the comfort of a private yacht at night. The most popular option is to book during sunset, 6-9pm or 7-10pm to experience daylight, sunset, and a bit of NYC after dark.

Q What if the weather is bad?

If the weather is unsafe to sail, we offer a no-fee rescheduling or if no mutually agreeable date is available, full refund. If the weather is not perfect but not unsafe (i.e. rain) we do our best to accommodate all guest requests. It is our goal to provide the best experience possible and in these situations we will try to work with you and see if better times/dates are available. The yacht interior is climate controlled and we do sail in rain. The contract does not provide for no-fee rescheduling or refund for inclement weather but we try to work with everyone to come up with mutually agreeable solutions.

Q I see the same boats listed everywhere? Where should I book this?

Our pricing is standardized and you should feel comfortable booking with any authorized agent or broker, or directly. Online "Airbnb"-style booking services may levy additional fees.

Q How do we pay for a cruise?

We take deposits on credit cards to reserve dates and expect the balance to be paid online via Zelle/ACH/"E-check". We also accept wires, bitcoin, cash, and company or bank checks.

Q What discounts do you offer?

Our pricing is based upon the substantial overhead costs of maintaining and professionally staffing multimillion dollar private yachts. We cut no corners and provide luxury service. Generally speaking, we do not offer discounts. We offer an experience which is often less expensive yet vastly superior to private service at exclusive Manhattan landside venues.

Q What is a customary tip?

Tips for hardworking crew are not included unless specifically added in advance. Tipping is appreciated and customary at the end of your cruise for an amazing experience. One tip for the entire crew, recommended at 18% of total charter fee, can be handed to the Captain and will be split evenly among the crew. Cash is preferred but credit cards, Zelle, and Venmo are also accepted.

Q Are we allowed to swim from the yacht?

New York Harbor and the Hudson River have fast currents and heavy boat traffic and are NOT safe for swimming. We do permit swimming from the Justine yacht only, as part of full-day or overnight cruises. We will take you to a more protected area such as Croton, Coney Island, Manhasset Bay, or Sandy Hook. There is no swimming from the Juliette yacht, or as part of any half-day cruise.

Q Can I fly my drone?

We allow guests who wish to take a drone photo or video to do so from a dock only, either before or after the cruise. Any aerial videography from a moving yacht MUST be discussed and cleared with management well in advance (not during boarding). We must discuss homepoint settings, EMF interference, and have insurance and a damage deposit on file.

Q Are there any kayaks, jetskis, etc?

We operate primarily in New York Harbor, which is not a safe place for kayaking, wakeboarding, etc. We can bring water toys upon request for overnight or fullday charters leaving the metro area. Any jetskis require coordination with a third party rental company, which requires advanced planning.

Q Can we film aboard?

You are welcome to photograph/film and share whatever you like. Commercial film and photo shoots should be aware that we do not require permits to film aboard but marinas and docks will require permits for dockside filming. Our crew can help with layouts, positioning, and recommend locations and angles. All commercial film and photoshoots are subject to a $1250/hr flat fee, 4 hour minimum, with a credit card on file for overtime. We can assist with chase boats. Staterooms are available for monitors, hair/makeup/wardrobe, etc.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Q What are your policies regarding masks and the Coronavirus?

We will fully comply with state and federal regulations which apply. Our guests are not currently required to mask and social distance aboard during the 2023 season.

Q Am I allowed to smoke on the yacht?

Smoking and Vaping is permitted on outside decks only. Ashtrays will be provided. Guests are not allowed to bring any smoking device with hot coals, such as hookahs, which present a fire hazard.

Q Are you Handicap-accessible?

No , these yachts are not ADA-compliant. All guests must ascend stairs to board and to access the top deck. However, we have hosted many guests with limited mobility, who board with the assistance of crew and family members. Please contact us with any specific concerns or requirements.

Q Will I be seasick?

New York Harbor generally is fairly calm although waves can be made by criss-crossing ferries. If you are prone to seasickness we recommend taking an over-the-counter medication such as Dramamine one hour in advance, not drinking alcohol, and spending time on outside decks. Crew cannot dispense medications.

2-Hour Day Sail to Statue of Liberty on America 2.0

This sailing tour is one of the most enjoyable boat tours I’ve ever done in New York! On board on this 105-foot schooner you sail from the Chelsea Piers to the Statue of Liberty and can always see the beautiful skyline of Manhattan and New Jersey. Included in the price is a drink and guaranteed a lot of fun. 

Classic Harbor Line: Champagne City Lights Cruise

We had an amazing time onboard the luxurious 1920s inspired motor yacht. Combine sightseeing with a romantic evening and step onboard the 1920s inspired boat at Pier 62 (Chelsea Piers – W. 22nd and Hudson River). During the 90-minutes long tour, you’ll get to see iconic NYC sights along the water and most importantly breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline. Especially in the summer, you can admire the most beautiful sunset during this special cruise. There is seating inside the yacht and outside seating as well.

Live Jazz City Lights Sail

This 90-minute live jazz sail is one of the best NYC sails I’ve ever done. You’ll sail from Chelsea Piers to New York Harbor, always with the beautiful skyline and Statue of Liberty in view. What you can expect on the Live Jazz City Lights Sail and why you should definitely do it, I’ll tell you in my report!

Sunset Sail Aboard a Schooner

This sailing tour is so beautiful – I’ve done it myself! Aboard the Schooner America 2.0 you sail towards the Statue of Liberty and experience one of the most romantic sunsets in New York. The atmosphere on board is really great and relaxed, while you can admire the Manhattan skyline the whole time. Even a drink is included! Be sure to check it out!

Skyline Brunch Cruise Around Manhattan

This brunch cruise is one of the most beautiful boat tours in New York. You sit aboard a 1920s-style ship with lots of wood and even more glass. The provider has several wonderful boat tours in the program, of which we have already tried four (and all were great!).

Start at Pier 62 at Chelsea Piers – this is where you board. First you start towards the George Washington Bridge, then turn south to the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor and the Brooklyn Bridge . You can enjoy the view of the New York skyline and have a delicious brunch with New York specialties. The first drink (even champagne!) is even included in the price.

Circle Line - Harbor Lights Night Cruise

The Harbor Lights Cruise by Cricle Line is an amazing way to see the NYC from the water. As the lights start to sparkle across the Hudson and East Rivers at dusk you see the beauty of the city at night from a whole different angle.

Classic Harbor Line: Architecture Yacht Cruise

The architecture boat tour takes you around Manhattan in 2.5 hours. On a 30 meter long wooden ship in the style of the 1920s you can relax and learn a lot of interesting facts about the many small and large buildings of the city. The tour is super-relaxing and the price includes a drink (vino, soft drinks) and small snacks.

Sunset Boat Cruise to Statue of Liberty

This sunset boat ride to the Statue of Liberty departs from Pier 36 on the East River. From here you will sail along the East River towards the southern tip of Manhattan, passing under the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge. 

Then you continue to the Statue of Liberty and a little bit up the Hudson River, so that you can see the skyline of New York from both sides of Manhattan.

Bateaux Lunch Cruise

This boat tour with lunch on board the Bateaux New York will take you from the Hudson River to the East River, which means you will see all the major buildings of the NYC skyline. And of course, the Statue of Liberty is included! Since the atmosphere on the Bateaux Lunch cruise is a bit more formal, guests are asked to wear long pants and no shorts or hot pants or flip flops.

Circle Line - New York Landmarks Cruise

This Circle Line cruise will take you past NYC’s most famous attractions and landmarks.
