AVATAR is the first of a series of FPB64 passagemaker motor yachts designed by Dashew Offshore in the United States and built in New Zealand by Circa Marine. AVATAR was launched in Spring of 2010 and, as of her upcoming sixth anniversary, has completed 38,000 nautical miles of bluewater cruising and has cleared in to 22 different countries including (in chronological order) New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Indonesia, Philippines, the west coast of the U.S. from Hawaii to San Diego to Seattle, Canada, Mexico, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama, Jamaica, Bahamas, the east coast of the U.S., Turks and Caicos Islands, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands – and she is still on the move. Another FPB64, Grey Wolf, completed an epic maiden voyage In 2014 by sailing virtually nonstop 12,000 NM from New Zealand to Great Britain by way of the Panama Canal.

The first FPB (Functional Power Boat) was the 83′ prototype Wind Horse, followed by the 64 series of which there are now eleven. Iceberg, a 97 foot model, launched in 2014. Three 78s are under construction with the first launch scheduled for March 2016. All are designed based on principles originally applied to the iconic Dashew designed circumnavigation sailing yachts, which include Deerfoot, Sundeer, and Beowulf. All are ideally suited for short-handed cruising comfortably over long distances, efficiently and safely. The newest model, just announced in early 2016, is a 70 footer.

At a cruising speed of between 9 to 9.5 knots an FPB64 has a range of 5,500 to 6,400 NM. Diesel fuel capacity is 3,400 gallons and freshwater storage is 1,800 gallons with an on board watermaker to make more. The fuel and water are stored low in the hull for ballast, contributing to stability and self-righting capability. Power is provided by one 235 HP John Deere engine but a second ‘get home’ engine is included for an added measure of security. Hydraulic Naiad stabilizers contribute to the smooth ride, even in rough seas. Waterline length before adding the stern extension is 64′. Beam is 17′ and depth is 5′.

The rugged aluminum exterior belies an elegant, comfortable interior that contains a master suite, a guest (or crew) cabin, and a single bunk cabin (affectionately known aboard AVATAR as ‘the closet’). There are two heads with showers, an office, a galley which features full-sized washer and dryer units in addition to sink, induction cooktop, combination convection/microwave oven, refrigerator, two freezers, dishwasher, and trash compactor. The roomy salon features a lift-up flat screen TV and has a panoramic view of the sea through continuous wrap around windows on three sides, as well as a navigation station with a full complement of electronics. The huge walk-in engine room is a mechanic’s dream. Generous storage is provided both in the forepeak and also in the ‘basement’ below the salon and galley, as well as lift-up cupboards, drawers, and hanging closets throughout the yacht interior.

The exterior features a flying bridge with comfortable seating, a great view, and additional electronics. The aft deck has room for on board storage of a dinghy (on AVATAR we have two) which can be launched by the lifting booms on either side, also a barbeque, fish cleaning station with sink, stern extension platform, and warm water shower.

3 thoughts on “ About AVATAR ”

I’ve been following your blog and the work being done at Circa Marine. I have a question regarding generator use and power management aboard the FPB 64. It seems that you have spent quite a bit of time in the tropics and wonder how it is to operate/live on the FPB in tropical climates. I know the FPB’s are designed with efficient systems in order to reduce generator run time, but how does this work in reality? I know with other trawler brands, power management often necessitates running the generator 24/7….thus frequent genset oil changes. How do you operate the boat while at anchor, in both hot/humid conditions and when in cooler climates that don’t require AC use? Did you find it necessary to use AC frequently while at anchor? How often were you required to change genset oil?

I have other questions regarding the FPB and your experience, but don’t want to go on and on. I appreciate any info. Thank you!

Hi Chip, I’m forwarding your question on to our captain for his input. Thanks for following along.

Hi Chip – Here’s our captain’s input. Hope that helps!

“When we are in the high tropics at anchor, we run the generator all day with the Air Con units on. At night Genset off. At night we use fans and no Air Con. It is possible to run 1 Air Con in the master cabin off the batteries if required. Its very easy to change Genset oil, so not an issue. The Genset oil is changed every 200 hours.

In cooler climes at anchor, we only run the Genset in the morning when making breakfast and in the evening when cooking dinner or at times we might use heavy power eg washing machine/dryer

The Genset noise is unobtrusive, so no issue having it on.”

avatar the way of water

“ Avatar: The Way of Water ” not only expands the scope of Pandora’s ecological systems, it also depicts a renewed, vengeful human military with a bounty of deadly, new tools at its disposal. Between devising the culture of two warring civilizations, production designers Ben Procter and Dylan Cole had their work cut out for them on James Cameron’s science-fiction sequel. The pair worked as concept art directors on the first “Avatar” before moving into their new roles for the film’s follow-ups — all the way back in the fall of 2013.

Related Stories

Regulators shouldn’t blow the whistle on venu sports just yet, ‘deadpool & wolverine’ to incur only ‘minimal cuts’ ahead of confirmed china theatrical release, popular on variety.

“It is about creating a legit ecosystem that he happens to go shoot his movie in,” Cole says. “We need to design way more than you ever see. We have to design the world for Jim to go on a location scout to find parts to explore.”

While most of the objects on-screen in “The Way of Water” were created digitally, the production designers strived to center the wild visuals with a consistent tactility. It’s a large reason why the machinery appears so intensely optimized — because every nook and cranny has been made by Procter and Cole.

“I love to use full chunks of things from the real world,” Procter says. “There may be things that people don’t know about as much visually, so it still feels fresh. It’s a principle of looking to reality as closely as you can so that the fantasy doesn’t run wild.”

With Variety , the production designers broke down the various vehicles seen in the film.

S-76 SeaDragon

“Anybody who’s ever seen a pelican seemingly hover forever over the ocean — there’s an extra lift just by being close to the ocean, a perfect flat boundary,” Procter shares. “That idea has been explored in real-world aircraft; very exotic ones that most people don’t know, but it’s out there.”

The SeaDragon combines the Lun-class ekranoplan elements with a hydrofoil effect, meaning the hull lifts higher above the surface as the ship gains speed.

“One of our illustrators did an image of it, sending the entire ocean’s worth of water up into the air, coming onto the camera,” Procter says. “That was such an evocative thing that Jim was like, ‘Alright, fuck it! It’s also a hydrofoil.'”

After the team figured out the engineering it would pull from, more fantastical elements were incorporated into the designs. The launch and recovery processes for diving vehicles were accelerated from real-world analogues for “cinematic speed requirements,” while the final build of the ship purposefully evokes some marine animals, such as the swift movement of a manta ray and the “big ‘ol ugly mouth” of a cat fish.

The final hour of “The Way of Water” is essentially composed of a series of extended action set pieces aboard and surrounding the SeaDragon. For that reason, production designers had to take various combat and narrative beats into account. As an example, chains and winches were added onto the main deck of the ship so that characters could use them as whips in a fight sequence.

“There are so many geographic requirements, sight lines and fight scenes. The good thing is we were able to approach it in a piecemeal way. The subtleties of staircases and raised catwalks were all rejiggered 100 times to allow the story to function,” Procter says.

The Matador is the high-speed boat captained by Mick Scoresby (Brendan Cowell), the chief behind the hunting operation in the film. Procter and Cole took elements from whaling vehicles, reworking them to the reduced scale of a contemporary, high-performance military boat.

“There are parts of it that are based off real whaling vehicles. The look of the harpoon gun itself is certainly inspired by that: the fact that the rope from it goes down to a coil,” Procter says. “Incidentally, we took a page from today’s whaling boats. They put ‘research vessel’ on the side, which is just this completely disingenuous thing to justify it. The SeaDragon says ‘research vessel’ inside, too.”

SMP-2 Crab Suit

“The pilots have figured out how to use a monkey bar to launch themselves into the water,” Procter shares. “With many of our vehicles, what we built were cockpits. We effectively built the cockpit itself, including the finished exterior, and then we build a piece of body and one leg. There are so many digital visual effects work that go on top. You have to be really crafty with what you build…Without the body and the leg, it’s placed on the motion base for when we want to shoot a pilot doing stuff while the crab suit is active.”

Although this locomotive takes an early exit in “The Way of Water,” the film’s production designers still thoroughly addressed the vehicle’s movement and its purpose within the human settlement on Pandora.

“We illustrated it because it’s cool,” Procter shares. “The train is there as a long-distance logistic to both carry material and vehicles that are needed at a mining site. A lot of what you see flying through the air are the replacement parts for our bulldozers. It’s pieces of the track, it’s the wheels. It’s all legit parts of all the equipment. It goes up with empty ore cars from Bridgehead. When it comes back, all those four cars are refilled with raw, unrefined unobtainium extraction.”

The lightweight Skel Suits are more athletic than the massive, lumbering mechs seen in the first “Avatar.” The production designers share that humans’ increased familiarity with the abilities of Na’vi and the environmental obstacles of Pandora have led the military to develop this more practical build. But the Skels’ basis in performance-capture technology also provided a more ergonomic tool for the film production.

“Having something that is a Na’vi size, an even match in terms of combat, becomes really useful for the soldiers,” Procters shares. “In terms of how we do capture, it’s also super useful. Every day we solve this problem of how to build proxy sets for Na’vi-sized people. There were cases where we had a capture that was done for the military’s Avatars that we later decided against. We can literally map that performance onto a Skel. So some of the Skel kills that Jake does on the SeaDragon were originally meant to be Avatars.”

The first FPB (Functional Power Boat) was the 83' prototype Wind Horse, followed by the 64 series of which there are now eleven. Iceberg, a 97 foot model, launched in 2014. Three 78s are under construction with the first, Cochise, just launched in June 2016. The current wait list for a build slot for a new FPB is four years. All are designed based on principles originally applied to the iconic Dashew designed circumnavigation sailing yachts, which include Deerfoot, Sundeer, and Beowulf. All are ideally suited for short-handed cruising comfortably over long distances, efficiently and safely.

At a cruising speed of between 9 to 9.5 knots an FPB64 averages 235 miles a day on passage and has a range of 5,500 to 6,400 nm. Diesel fuel capacity is 3,400 gallons and freshwater storage is 1,800 gallons with an on board watermaker to make more. The fuel and water are stored low in the hull for ballast, contributing to stability and self-righting capability. Power is provided by one 235 hp John Deere engine but a second 'get home' engine is included for an added measure of security. Hydraulic Naiad stabilizers contribute to the smooth ride, even in rough seas. Waterline length before adding the stern extension is 64' 9", Beam is 17.04' and draft is 5.25".

The rugged aluminum exterior belies an elegant, comfortable interior that contains a master suite, a guest (or crew) cabin, and a single bunk cabin. There are two heads with showers, an office, a galley which features full-sized washer and dryer units in addition to sink, induction cooktop, combination convection/microwave oven, refrigerator, and two freezers. The roomy salon features a lift up flat screen TV and has a panoramic view of the sea through continuous wrap around windows on three sides, as well as a navigation station with a full complement of electronics. The huge walk-in engine room is a mechanic's dream. Generous storage is provided both in the forepeak and also in the 'basement' below the salon and galley, as well as lift-up cupboards, drawers, and hanging closets throughout the yacht interior.

Varrick's yacht

  • Edit source

Water Tribe emblem

Varrick 's yacht was docked at the Southern Water Tribe for a meeting.

Varrick's yacht is a luxurious boat used by the shipping magnate to travel around the world , flaunting his flamboyant lifestyle, [1] though Varrick has also claimed that he built it to escape clingy women. [2]

  • 4 References

History [ ]

In 171 AG , Varrick's yacht was docked in the Southern Water Tribe harbor, and Varrick entertained a number of guests, including Asami and Bolin , on the ship prior to the Glacier Spirits Festival banquet. He demonstrated his supposed levitation abilities to his audience, though Bolin was quick to point out that he did not actually appear to have been levitating. Bolin's ignorance was mistaken as frankness and Varrick decided he liked the two foreigners, opposed to how he felt about his swami , whom he held responsible for his failed levitation attempt and fired thereafter. Varrick later introduced Asami and Bolin to his newest venture, motion pictures. Asami attempted to steer the conversation back toward her goal of a Future Industries shipping deal, to which Varrick quickly agreed, intending to sort out the details of the agreement later that day during the royal feast. With their business concluded, Varrick excitedly invited everyone on a rocket-boat ride. [3]

Varrick's biplane

Varrick 's yacht is spacious enough to conceal a biplane .

After the winter solstice , Varrick's yacht was one of the many ships that were left unable to leave due to the harbor lock-down by Northern naval forces. [4] A few days later, Varrick and Team Avatar managed to get on board the yacht for the purpose of breaking the blockade and rescuing Tonraq and the other rebel prisoners. After Avatar Korra stated that she needed to get into the air to waterbend the Northern ships out of the way, Varrick revealed he had a biplane on board kept under a hatch beneath deck, but Asami pointed out that there was no runway on the vessel; Varrick subsequently told his assistant, Zhu Li , to make a note to build a runway on the yacht for later. Despite this, Korra and Mako were able to firebend to give the biplane enough thrust to take off as Asami piloted. Korra subsequently went into the Avatar State to waterbend the battleships out of the way as Varrick drove his yacht past them, and they successfully managed to free the prisoners. However, after dropping the rebels back at the Southern Water Tribe so they could continue the fight against the north, Varrick spotted Eska traveling right at them, a look of intense fury on her face, and at Bolin's encouragement, drove the ship away at full speed. [2]

Korra later used Varrick's yacht to return to the South Pole in order to confront Hundun and his followers. [5]

Varrick's yacht interior

The interior of Varrick 's yacht is able to accommodate several guests.

The yacht is predominantly white, with blue accents and a blue insignia. It has at least three floors, and the room Asami and Bolin met Varrick in was quite spacious, comfortably accommodating several guests on floor cushions. [3] At the front of the vessel is a hatch containing a biplane, though there is a lack of a runway long enough to allow the plane to take off. [2]

In terms of mobility, the vehicle was able to outpace even a high-class waterbender in the water. [2]

  • The blue ship logo on the yacht appears on a number of other items associated with Varrick, including the snowsuit he provided for Bolin, [6] the biplane he had on his yacht, [2] and speedboats from his ships. [7]
