Got ripped off from one of the taxi drivers here! Had booked the fare previous day for Rocko to pick up from Radisson and transfer to airport however he passed the fare to another driver who charged us double the standard rate! Really not a good look when so many tourists using this service and we had good service from other drivers.

On Saturday the 16th of May 2015 the new Denarau Yacht Club and The Rhum-Ba were officially opened by His Excellency the President of Fiji, Sir Ratu Epeli Nailatikau. Officiating the proceedings in front of a packed house of government officials and distinguished guests, His Excellency commended the owners, Mr Mike Dennis and Mr Nigel Skeggs for their commitment to Fiji and the outstanding building that was a result of a lot of hard work and collaboration by various parties.

The Rhum-Ba and Denarau Yacht Club will be the premier Restaurant, Bar and social club not only in the Western Division of Fiji but in Fiji as a whole. The need and desire for the Yacht Club has been present since the inception of the working marina, and has been a topic of discussion for locals for several years. With the growing number of residents, visiting yachts and tourists to the area The Rhum-Ba and Yacht Club will be poised to cater for this growing market. The Rhum-Ba and Denarau Yacht Club has been designed and built to cater for locals and yachties with the expectation that this will create a great atmosphere to attract the general tourist market. Designed and built by Kyronn (Fiji) Limited with interior design by Furnz in New Zealand the end result is a spectacular building lifting the profile of Port Denarau Marina which only last week won the Marina Industries Association, “International Marina of the Year” award for 2015/16. The Rhum-Ba menu philosophy is based on using fresh quality ingredients prepared in a simple yet delicious manner. The kitchen under the guidance of Executive Chef, Mr Henry Selman, is committed to using local farm fresh flavours and ingredients throughout the menu with the goal of keeping imported products to a minimum.

The Rhum Ba Kitchen will be open from 11am – 10pm, seven days a week, serving late breakfast, lunch and dinner. Ala cart lunch service will be between 11am- 3pm, Ala cart Dinner service will be from 5:30pm – 10pm. Pizzas and Bar Snack menu options will be available from 12pm-10pm.

The Lunch and dinner menu options will offer “premium” dishes. The pizza and snack options will allow customers to eat during any time they arrive. In addition to a delicious food menu, The Rhum-Ba will feature a fine selection of wines and cocktails, and as a world first will be the only bar outside of New Zealand to have Lion Breweries premium beer, Steinlager Pure on tap. In addition through this partnership Speights’ Cider is also available on tap. This is another Fiji first. “We are very excited about our relationship with Lion and look forward to launching more new products for Fiji over the coming year” says Mr Michael Dennis. As the name implies, The Rhum-Ba will be renowned for its large selection of rums (rhum) from around the world. Currently there are 100 rums on offer with this set to grow over time. “Rum is an incredibly diverse spirit with a colourful and important maritime history. Our intention is not just to stock Rum but also to inspire our customers to explore the different varieties and gain more knowledge of rum. We intend to hold rum appreciation courses and rum also features heavily in our cooking which adds a fun and unique element to our cuisine” says Nigel Skeggs. The venue is ideal to be used for large groups such as weddings, meetings, incentives, conferences and events. Without being attached to a hotel this venue offers customers a more flexible and diverse location with unrivalled views over Port Denarau Marinas Super Yacht Jetty with the Sleeping Giant in the background. Taking it to the next level The Rhum-Ba have also released their own range of swimwear and merchandise designed by renowned Fiji fashion and fabric artist, Ms Sonam Sapra. The overall design and build concept is the result of a partnership with the Primary Shareholders and Directors Nigel Skeggs and Michael Dennis, each person having suitable and relevant experience in the industry and business locally.

Additional consultation with experts in their respective fields have resulted in a well planned Bar Restaurant and Club that will meet the needs of the market with high quality products and service through the use of sound business practices, technology and modern design. www.rhum-ba.com facebook.com/RhumBaFiji #RhumBaFiji

Port Denarau Fiji

In light of the global COVID pandemic, yachts are limited by where they can travel, how and when. Restrictions and regulations in the industry seem to change by the week.

Fortunately, Fiji took initiative and opened up their “Blue Lane”, which allows yachts and pleasure cruisers to enter the country through Port Denarau.

By following their guidelines, yachties can enter the country after their 14-day quarantine is completed (travel days included!) Fiji is an incredible place to be right now because it is COVID free and working hard to stay that way. Should your vessel decide to travel to Port Denarau, here is what you need to know before you arrive.

Port Denarau Fiji

Where to provision from Port Denarau

Because Fiji cannot reap the benefits of tourist season, times are trying for this little island. Consider the impact you could have on local businesses when deciding where to provision. The first places listed are locally owned and operated and will cater to your every need to the best of their ability. Fijians want your business and are therefore happy to make you happy.

Provisioners

Pacific provisions.

These guys are new on the scene, but it’s a great company to have on the go for guest provisions. They will provision to Fiji, and also most of the rest of the Pacific. Pacific Provisions are run by ex yachties, so you know you are in capable hands.

They can help with produce, meats and seafoods, dry goods- even guest toiletries!

Check their website out and contact them directly for more information.

There are a few fresh produce provisioners around the port, but a crowd favourite is Farmboy. Many of the produce provisioners import their products and therefore buy massive quantities. Often they push those products even though the quality is subpar. Farmboy sources almost 85% of its produce locally. They even grow much of it on their own family farm! The quality is great and they are willing to give you Fijian produce to play with and recipes to go along should you be interested.

Nadi and Namaka Markets

There are two fresh food markets near Port Denarau, Nadi and Namaka. The Nadi market is located at the heart of the town behind the main street. The Namaka market is located in between the airport and the port. Both offer fresh vegetables, fruit, fish, spices, and kava. The earlier you go the better, especially on Saturdays.

Get there as close to 7 AM as you can for an eye-opening shopping trip. This is a great way to discover native Fijian produce. Don’t hesitate to ask the locals how to cook certain things. They love giving out their family recipes. Make sure you take plenty of cash as most vendors do not accept cards.

Hours: Every day 7 AM-6 PM

South Pacific Butchers

Located a short drive away from Port Denarau, right before the city of Nadi, South Pacific Butchers is an excellent purveyor of fresh, high-quality meats. They have an excellent selection of beef, chicken, and pork. They can also assist in procuring higher quality meats for charters and boss trips as long as they are given advance notice of about two weeks.

They take orders through text and Instagram direct message & they’re happy to bake certain specialty items for all your provisioning needs.

Wine, chocolate, and coffee…what more could you want? While there is a liquor store at the Port, this spot is special because the wines are handpicked by the talented sommelier, Alex Weiss. The coffee is brewed locally and can be altered to meet your specific preferences.

They have also recently partnered with Vanua chocolate, a local chocolatier who makes bars with 100% Fijian cocoa beans. They’re also just begun selling Fiji made vodka and gin (and they swear they’re so pure you won’t get a hangover!) This is your one-stop-shop for all things indulgent.

Supermarkets

Located in Port Denarau, the XpressMart is a quick shop for bare essentials. You’ll find pasta, milk, chips, and canned goods here but their variety is limited. This is a great spot for grabbing an extra litre of milk when you run out and don’t have time to do a big store run. It gets the job done but it wouldn’t be the best place to rely on in terms of provisioning for more than a day or two.

Fresh Choice

Fresh Choice is a great little supermarket located on Denarau Island. It is small compared to the supermarket’s chefs might be used to in larger countries, but hey, it’s Fiji.

Because it is located on the island, you’ll find many New Zealand and Australian products with a few Fijian products sprinkled in. Of all of the supermarkets in Nadi, this one has the most diverse selection in terms of food from different cultures. You won’t find niche items, but you can snag some katsu curry or tamales.

Hours: Every day 7 AM-8 PM

New World is one of the best supermarkets nearby. If you go into the city of Nadi, chances are you will be disappointed by the selections in the stores like MaxValue. New World is about a 15-minute drive from the Port and has almost everything you need. Bread, produce, dairy products, cleaning products, you name it. If you want to limit your shopping to one store, this one will leave you satisfied.

Specialty Markets

If you’re looking for Italian, you’re looking for Flavio. An Italian-turned-Fijian, Flavio owns a small shop that can also be used as a private restaurant. He sells pasta, cheeses, select meats, homemade gelato, olive oils, and more. He also dabbles in his own cheesemaking. Flavio is a great contact for those who love authentic Italian cuisine.

Local Bars & Restaurants

It’s highly unlikely that anyone can visit Port Denarau and not go to Cardo’s. Owned by the beloved Cardo himself, this is a great place to grab a drink after work and maybe even a decent meal. Their fare is typical bar food with a few Fijian dishes thrown in for good measure. They offer karaoke on Thursdays, sports viewings, and live bands every weekend. They even offer breakfast! That best part? You’ll never leave the place without a smile.

Address: Port Denarau, Denarau Island, Fiji

For those looking for a bit more sophisticated, playful cuisine, head on over to Kanu. Owned by chef Lance Seeto, Kanu boasts modern Asian-Fijian fusion. They’re plant-based and vegan inspired, but they do offer meat as an addition on most dishes. They play with native Fijian vegetables and spices in ways that push the envelope and challenge the way most think of Fijian cuisine. Their drinks are more like health juices with a splash of alcohol mixed in. Between the Kama Sutra 69 and the Awake & Numb, the drink will leave you feeling a little healthier, sexier, and tipsier. Follow them on Instagram for happy hour and weekend specials.

Address: 333 Queens Road, Nadi, Fiji

This restaurant is a newer addition to the food scene nearby. Located on Wailoaloa beach, Eat Greek rests at the top of the Ramada. Get there right before sunset for a beautiful view of BAY and delicious Greek cuisine. Enjoy spanakopita, dolmades, gyros, and baklava as well as red & white wines that you can’t find anywhere else. They’ve partnered with Indulge and pride themselves on their unique wine selection. Head there on Friday or Sunday for an extra treat- live music!

Address: Ramada Rooftop Wailoaloa

If you’re looking for good, honest, delicious Fijian food, this is your place. You’ll get traditional soups, curries, rollups, and desserts. It’s a humble establishment located on Queens Road between Denarau and Namaka. It is a staple of the community and almost everyone you meet will tell you that Tu’s is the place you want to go for the real FIjian experience.

Getting around Nadi & beyond

Port Denarau is a 15 minute drive from the city of Nadi, the town of Latoka, and the airport. Feel free to walk around Denarau Island and to these destinations, but don’t doubt that a taxi driver will offer to pick you up frequently on your way.

You’ll get to know that taxi drivers by name the longer you spend at the Port. They will all give you their personal phone numbers and some might even invite you home for dinner.

Besides getting around by foot or by taxi, rental cars in Fiji are a great deal. There is a Budget rental center at the Port and at the time of writing, renting a small car for a day is about 60 bula, or 25 euro.

There is a final and very cheap option of catching the bus from the Port into the town of Nadi. It’s not super reliable because Fiji time means no rushing or scheduling. But it is cheap and it’s a good way to meet locals.

Crew Days Off in Fiji

There is so much to do in Fiji if you’re lucky enough to have some time off. Don’t be afraid to ask locals for their advice. They love to see people interested in taking advantage of all their island has to offer. If you’ve got weekends off, try:

  • Diving trips, courses and certifications through Deep Blue Fiji.
  • Drive down to Sigatoka and visit the waterfalls & sand dunes
  • Drive to Suva and explore Fiji’s capital city
  • Spend the weekend at Musket Cove enjoying the beachfront bungalows and Sand Bar
  • Rent a small boat and explore the islands. Don’t forget to take kava to the villages you visit as a sign of respect

For those who might not have as much time, never fear. There’s plenty to do in a day or less.

  • Visit the Garden of the Sleeping Giant and go soak in the natural mud baths and sulfur springs nearby
  • Relax at the Island Day Spa and spend the day getting pampered
  • Hike the Sleeping Giant Mountain
  • Go into Nadi town and see a Fijian rugby game
  • For the daredevil, see Fiji from above and go skydiving

Port Denarau itself

Port Denarau is slowly but surely coming back to life as more boats enter Fiji. Although it is a bit quiet these days, you’ll still be able to do some shopping, eating, drinking, and dancing. Stores in Denarau include Ripcurl, Jack’s, Harrison’s, and Cloudbreak. You can find Indian, Italian, Thai, Japanese, and of course, Fijian food. You can stock up on basic shopping items between XpressMart and the new Farmboy shop. And the night scene will always be waiting for you at Cardo’s.

Denarau Dining Guide: Five Star to Flamboyant

Tatyana Leonov and Tiffany Carroll taste test the best on offer in Fiji’s popular Denarau area. Seafood to steak, sophisticated to simple.

travel-big-img

Pacific Island Living

Tatyana Leonov and Tiffany Carroll taste test the best on offer in Fiji’s popular Denarau area. Seafood to steak, sophisticated to simple. Fiji’s gastronomy scene has matured as of late and visitors have an excess of local and international foods to choose from. Less than 10 kilometres from Nadi, Denarau Island is home to a cornucopia of resorts, most with fabulous restaurants that offer the ultimate in dining – lavish fine diners, elegant waterfront restaurants and casual poolside hangouts – it’s all there. Local chefs are getting creative with cooking styles, sometimes fusing modern techniques with traditional cooking methods, and international chefs are bringing their own experiences and adding it to the mix.

Flying Fish

At Sheraton Fiji Resort’s (sheratonfiji.com) al fresco waterfront Flying Fish restaurant (Peter Kurivita’s signature brand) Polish newcomer Pawel Klodowski is wowing customers with polished, tantalising dishes every night. Fijian seafood is prominently featured on the menu and à la carte dining is always popular, however now there’s a new concept for patrons wanting something a little bit different. Book for a Chef’s Table dinner and get up close and personal with the chefs. Private or communal, the idea is that guests watch the chefs do their meticulous work and indulge in both a degustation and show.

V Restaurant

Just a stone’s throw away French chef Jean-Marc Ruzzene presents diners with a sophisticated French-inspired menu at the suave V Restaurant at So tel Fiji Resort and Spa (so tel. com/Fiji-Denarau). Unlike the perennially busy Salt Restaurant which overlooks the gigantic family pool and the softly lapping waves of the calm see, step into V Restaurant and enter another realm, one where thatched roofs and palm fronds don’t exist, instead an elegant interior scheme of browns, crèmes and beiges dominates the elegant colour palette. Here everything is beautifully presented (think crisp table linen and beautiful menus), service always comes with a smile, and dishes whizz out looking like artworks. An out-of-this world experience … in the tourist centre of Fiji.

The Yacht Club at Port Denarau went through a major upgrade last year culminating in the opening of the Rhum Ba. Quality finishings, unmatched views from the top floor function room and the best part of all – over 150 rums on offer set a new standard for sophisticated eating and drinking at the Port. Even if you’re not a rum drinker (and what would-be sailor can claim not to be?) the cocktail list is sophisticated and interesting. It’s not all about rum at the Rhum Ba, with late breakfast, lunch and dinner on offer too, there’s plenty to enjoy. Choices include local and imported seafood (oysters are the house specialty), tender beef cuts, spiced chicken, lamb, pasta and salads. The menu is all about what is fresh and what is best and the function room upstairs caters for more than 200 people. Perfect for parties, launch functions, weddings, you name it. We spent a couple of afternoons at the Rhum Ba (which led to a couple of evenings too) – the marina is full of activity, the people and boat watching, plus the relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff at the Rhum Ba made it near impossible to leave.

The thing that’s great about Port Denarau is after the cruise ships have departed, the shops have shut and the sun begins to set, the locals come out to play. The best known local is Richard (Cardo) Slatter, owner of Cardo’s Steakhouse. This fun, fiesty and flamboyant (well, perhaps well dressed is a better description) Fijian is the life and love of Cardo’s. A sharp wit and just as sharp a tongue, Cardo has been doing what he does best – restaurants and bars for longer than he cares to admit or remember. Cardo’s is famous in Fiji for its steaks and sh served on a sizzling hot plate. Fresh seafood, wood- red pizzas, Chinese wok creations, cocktails, delicious desserts and daily specials. The Fijiian staff is fun and attentive, usually under the watchful eye of Cardo. The chefs select only the best prime New Zealand steaks, and have been doing it so well for so many years, the Kiwi meat exporters come to them daring to offer nothing but the very best. Cardo’s is laid back and casual; sometimes with a live band, sometimes sport on the big screen. It’s the sort of place you want to hang out with mates, or join a table of expats and locals. It is a favourite of Fiji Island Living’s and we highly recommend it.

Chantara at Radisson

You can smell it the moment you walk in to the Radisson Blu Resort. Thai spices and fresh herbs, coriander, chilli, sweet basil. I love Thai food, but authentic Thai – not the watered down version we tend to find outside of Asia – so was pleasantly surprised to find Chantara is exactly that – authentic. Chef Mickey had just returned from Thailand when we dined and he was excited to be back to share his new hand-picked spices, however he said many of his ingredients can be sourced at the local market. “They (the market sellers) don’t know what some of the stuff is used for, but I have been very surprised to find things such as lemongrass, galangal and small chillies here in Fiji,” he said. We had the Thod Mun Khaw Pood (corn cookies) followed by Kaeng khiew (green curry) and Massaman beef – all were delicious and bursting with flavour. Wines are well matched (and well priced for Fiji) and the service was possibly the best we have experienced in Denarau. Bookings essential for this popular restaurant.

Port Denarau Marina is a key location for superyachts in the South Seas. Boasting more than 50 berths for vessels measuring up to 85 meters, the marina plays an important role in hosting international visitors and supporting the local maritime community.

Through its involvement in the South Pacific Superyacht Rendezvous, Port Denarau strengthens its longstanding relationship with event host The Superyacht Gathering and demonstrates its commitment to promoting the charms of Fiji’s cruising grounds to the international superyacht industry.

CEO Cynthia Rasch commented, “Port Denarau Marina is committed to supporting the inaugural South Pacific Superyacht Rendezvous as Gold Sponsors. We are excited to be part of this prestigious event and to contribute to its success. As Gold Sponsors, we are dedicated to showcasing excellence in the superyacht industry and promoting the beauty of the South Pacific region. This event presents an invaluable opportunity to connect with industry leaders, enthusiasts, and stakeholders, and we are honored to play a significant role in it. In addition to being a Gold Sponsor, Port Denarau will serve as the starting point of the first regatta of the Rendezvous on August 28th, with a captains’ briefing at Cardo’s Restaurant beforehand.

The marina joins fellow sponsors Tourism Fiji, Yachting Fiji, Tahiti Tourism, and Southport Yacht Club, who have all contributed to bringing this exciting new event to life.

Taking place from August 27th to 30th, 2024, this event will be the first of its kind for the region. The Rendezvous invites superyacht owners of sailing and motor yachts measuring 22 meters and above to participate in three days of friendly racing around the stunning Malolo Islands, interspersed with relaxed, barefoot beach parties each afternoon.

An eclectic mix of venues around the Fijian islands will host the event, including the 5-star Six Senses Resort, The Sofitel on Denarau Island, and Vuda Marina.

The Rendezvous is hosted by The Superyacht Gathering, an organization founded in 2019 as a platform for building connections within the South Pacific superyacht community. Events orchestrated by Founder Linda Berry have included symposiums and gatherings held in Fiji and New Zealand, but 2024 will see the launch of her first official Rendezvous.

The second annual Australia Fiji Rendezvous sponsored by Benetti Yachts was held on August 12, 2022 at Port Denarau Marina, Fiji.  Fourteen superyachts were in attendance, with all enjoying a busy season in Fiji and eager to receive updates on the Australian superyacht industry.

Superyacht Australia members Rivergate Marina & Shipyard, Super Yacht Group Great Barrier Reef and Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard attended a full day’s program of activities commencing with the Morning Tea Expo; followed by the Captains’ VIP Lunch and culminating with the Crew Networking Party in the evening.

David Good, CEO of Superyacht Australia, said, “Fiji has been a haven for all yachts during Covid with its successful Blue Lane initiative allowing access for yachts, crew and guests during a time when the majority of the world was closed. It is great to once again host an event there for yachts and crew ensuring all have a great time.”

The activities were all held at the new Sails@Denarau, in the Denarau Yacht Club overlooking the superyacht marina.  The Rivergate Marina & Shipyard’s VIP Captains’ Lunch was well attended with 17 guests and was a great opportunity for the Australian and local Fijian key industry personnel to talk to visiting yachts about their upcoming plans and the charter opportunities now available in Australia.
