We enjoyed lunch here. Our server, Heather, was so sweet and awesome. The view is beautiful. Would definitely recommend a visit. Both the Virginia and Maryland sides of the restaurant.

We came here n Saturday, didn't seem too busy but tables stated they were understaffed... we got crab cakes and flounder but had to wait for our food for an hour. The food was not the best BUT our server was amazing. She was friendly and had smile on her face the whole time.

Photo of Missy H.

The food was mediocre at best. Crab dip and hush puppies were good but the salads were from a bag and the shrimp was delayed due to not being thawed out enough for it to be served when other meals were served. The food was way over priced for the quality. The waitress was nice but I would not recommend eating here.

Good location, but wish we had gone somewhere else for many reasons.... We went in about brunch time to get a late breakfast. There was ONE PERSON in the whole place (which really should have been a sign...), at the bar drinking margaritas on a Tuesday morning. We ordered Bloody Mary's to start as we looked over the menu. It took 15+ minutes to get them. And they really were not worth the wait or $7. Saying they were mediocre would be over selling them. And I am really unsure if they had alcohol at all, or if it was just tomato juice with a garnish. So we finally get to order, I get Chesapeake Eggs Benedict. I ask if I could have hush puppies with mine instead of home fries, and if they could come out first. Waitress says no problem. 15+ minutes later we get the hush puppies, and the weren't awful. 5+ minutes after that we get our meals. And mine is DEFINITELY not right. There is no crab, no old bay, and the hollandaise sauce is the consistency of mustard. When the waitress finally comes back to check on us, I tell her I don't think mine is right. She then said crab was extra. When I asked how this was a "Chesapeake" eggs Benedict, she looked confused and walked away. She did bring back crab for my meal tho. When we finally get the bill, I am surprised to see there is a $5 charge for hush puppies in Addition to our meals and drinks. I asked the waitress if they came with our meal why were we being charged extra? She said they "would have been more added to the meal, so I saved you money". WTH??? There was no mention of it being an up charge. At this point I was honestly so irritated with the whole experience we just paid the bill and left. I do not recommend this place at all. It was an awful experience and expensive. I really wish we'd gone somewhere else.

Enter through the Boardwalk on Colonial Beach, sits over the Potomac River so technically in Maryland. Offers off track betting for horse races and a pretty strong drink at the bar. That's where the enchantment ends with me. All the employees are miserable and are quite vocal about it. Bathrooms were clean but oddly decorated.

Sits in the river, so off track betting and Maryland lottery available.

We're very disappointed to see your review, Dianne. This is certainly not the standard for Riverboat and we'll use your review to improve for the future with our staff. We pride ourselves on great service and food. We hope you will join us again in the future. We're glad you enjoy the drinks and betting. Best, Penny F., Owner

Great location right on the boardwalk with a great view. This is the gambling scene at Potomac Beach. We were there around 9 p.m. during the Potomac River Festival, and it was dead. Perhaps 9 p.m. is too early, but that's when the karaoke was supposed to start. We didn't see any karaoke. It might've been more fun with a group of friends who were drinking and gambling, but for just my sister and me, we weren't impressed. The exterior is really quite an eyesore, too.

Thanks for taking the time to provide us with your feedback, Lisa. We're disappointed to hear that the atmosphere wasn't what you were expecting during your visit. We pride ourselves on being a great place to grab a bite and enjoy some gambling. We don't currently offer karaoke and we're sorry about the miscommunication. We hope you will give us another chance to prove that to you. We're glad to hear you like the boardwalk. Best, Penny F., Owner

The view at the Riverboat is spectacular. I wish I could say the same about the rest of our experience. We visited on a beautiful Saturday afternoon when there was hardly anyone around. The outdoor seating area was great. The weather was gorgeous and the view was to die for. I could have sat there for hours talking in the sights. The food was okay. The seafood was good, as was my Reuben. However, the soup and vegetables tasted like they had come from a can, with the vegetable (green beans) looking pathetic and tasting 'funky.' My wife could not eat them. The price of the vegetables was removed from our bill, but only the waitress apologized. It would have been more appropriate if the manager had come and talked with us. What happened after dinner sealed the deal. My wife used the ladies room and recognized one of the other waitresses also using the facilities. This person left and returned to work without washing her hands. We also noticed this waitress smoking outside the main entrance of the building (less than 25 feet from the front door) upon our arrival. Needless to say, we will not be visiting the Riverboat again.

We spent good money to see a comedy performer here, and looked forward to a pleasant evening. The Riverboat had no security to control some drunken and obnoxious members of the audience who kept trying to make the show all about them. The performer repeatedly asked for assistance from the venue, including asking them not to serve the main guy causing problems more booze, and to not allow him to return from the bar to his seat, but they served him anyway. On his way back, he again disrupted the performer. This went on until the performer left the stage. Now the Riverboat wants to blame the entertainer for their lack of control of people acting like drunken jackasses. They are accepting no responsibility at all for their failure to handle this properly. NEVER again.

Very Disappointed with service and food today. Drove from Fredericksburg to come enjoy a nice meal only to be charged $20 for just a child to eat. Ordered hush puppies and a dozen chicken wings as our appetizer. The butter was rock hard. Asked for melted butter which never came as well as a refill that never came. The chicken wings where cold in the middle. When our food arrived the crab stuffed flounder wasn't even room temperature and the crab stuffed shrimp was lukewarm. When the chicken wings came out cold I initially thought it was the cook's fault. But as the evening went by our waitress mentioned our food was ready but it didn't bring our food out for several minutes. I also watched a cook bring food out and set it on the bar only for the waitress to take several minutes to take it to the table. Have to say not pleased about driving from Fredericksburg to Colonial Beach to spend $20 on 3 drinks, an order of hush puppies, Kraft Mac and cheese and a bun less hot dog.

Photo of Mariann H.

Unfortunately, the nice view of this water front restaurant did not match the quality of the food. I ordered the Crab Cake entree with a side is hush puppies. The hush puppies were tasty and the Crab Cake was OK but fell a little flat. I would say that it was too shredded; getting lump crab would have been nice. The canned green beans that I didn't know I was going to get on my plate ruined everything for me. For a white table cloth restaurant, anything canned is a no no. The server did not know the menu, did not taste the menu, did not offer us coffee, or dessert. Unfortunately, a meh experience.

Road near Lincoln Memorial to close for 6 years for river tunnel project

riverboat on the potomac

WASHINGTON - Ohio Drive in Southwest D.C. will close for the next six years as D.C. Water completes work related to the Potomac River Tunnel Project.

Ohio Drive SW between Independence Avenue SW and West Basic Drive SW is expected to close on June 17. The road is located near the Lincoln Memorial and the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C.

Drivers will use West Basin Drive to access Independence Avenue from Ohio Drive. To reach Ohio Drive from Independence Avenue, motorists will detour around the Tidal Basin to Maine Avenue, SW, and East Basin Drive, SW.

Drivers should expect delays in this area.

riverboat on the potomac

A relocated Ohio Drive is expected to open in October.

The Potomac River Tunnel is part of the D.C. Clean Rivers Project. The project aims to build a tunnel to keep sewer overflow from running into the Potomac River during heavy rain.

This stretch of road near the Lincoln Memorial will close for 6 years as part of project to keep sewer overflow out of Potomac River

Heads up, drivers: A small chunk of road along the Potomac River in D.C., near a key commuter route, is set to close for the next six years — and it could impact your drive into and out of the District.

The portion of Ohio Drive in Southwest D.C. that will close Monday, June 17, is from Independence Avenue to West Basin Drive. That’s south of the Lincoln Memorial, just off the Arlington Memorial Bridge. The road won’t fully reopen until 2030. It’s all part of a major project to build a massive tunnel to keep sewer overflow from gushing into the Potomac River during heavy rain.

D.C. Water issued a heads up about the traffic closures in a news release this week.

Listen to WTOP traffic on the 8s for the latest on roadway conditions

Starting Monday, drivers heading west on Ohio Drive will have to use West Basin Drive to access Independence Avenue. Drivers heading east from the Virginia side, looking to access Ohio Drive, will have to continue on Independence Avenue, circle around the Tidal Basin until Maine Avenue and use East Basin Drive.

The work will also close sidewalks and parking lanes.

riverboat on the potomac

There will be road signs and flaggers along the road directing vehicles through the closures but drivers should expect some delays.

By Oct. 15, crews expect to complete a temporary “relocated” Ohio Drive northwest of West Basin Drive that will intersect with Independence Avenue providing easier access. That temporary pass-through will remain open until the full project is completed in 2030.

riverboat on the potomac

The closure is necessary for crews to work on the Potomac River Tunnel , the next major phase of D.C. Water’s “DC Clean Rivers Project.”

The massive project entails building a huge sewer tunnel and other infrastructure to capture sewer overflow into the Potomac River and carry it to the Blue Plains wastewater treatment facility instead.

Officials with D.C. Water say the tunnel is needed to reduce sewer overflow into the Potomac and improve the water quality of the river and the Chesapeake Bay.

Sewer overflow into the river can happen during heavy rainfall that overloads the existing capacity of the water system. Overall, an estimated 654 million gallons of sewer overflow enter the Potomac through rainfall during an average year. The new tunnel aims to cut that by 93%.

Last fall, crews completed work on the Northeast Boundary tunnel, a 5-mile underground tunnel in Northeast that aims to reduce sewer overflow into the Anacostia River.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story misstated the total number of gallons of sewer overflow that enters the Potomac in an average year. The story has been corrected and updated.

What tree? Perfectly preserved 250-year-old cherries unearthed at Washington's Mt. Vernon

by MATTHEW BARAKAT | The Associated Press

Curator Lily Carhart holds up different samples of liquid they extracted from a few dozen 18th-century glass bottles that contained fruit after they were unearthed from the cellar of George Washington's residence in Mount Vernon, Va., Monday, June 17, 2024. (AP Photo/Nathan Ellgren)

MOUNT VERNON, Va. (AP) — George Washington never did cut down the cherry tree, despite the famous story to the contrary, but he did pack away quite a few bottles of the fruit at his Mount Vernon home.

Dozens of bottles of cherries and berries — impossibly preserved in storage pits uncovered from the cellar of his mansion on the banks of the Potomac River — were discovered during an archaeological dig connected to a restoration project.

Jason Boroughs, Mount Vernon's principal archaeologist, said the discovery of so much perfectly preserved food from more than 250 years ago is essentially unprecedented.

“Finding what is essentially fresh fruit, 250 years later, is pretty spectacular,” Boroughs said in an interview. “All the stars sort of have to align in the right manner for that to happen.”

Whole pieces of fruit, recognizable as cherries, were found in some of the bottles. Other bottles held what appear to be gooseberries or currants, though testing is underway to confirm that.

Mount Vernon is partnering with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which is conducting DNA testing on the fruit. They are also examining more than 50 cherry pits recovered from the bottles to see if any of them can be planted.

“It's kind of a longshot,” said Benjamin Gutierrez, a USDA plant geneticist, of the chances of using a cherry pit to grow a tree. Seeds preserve best when they are dry, and most of the samples found at Mount Vernon were waterlogged. A couple of pits tested initially were not viable as seeds.

Still, he said the bottles are a remarkable find. In addition to DNA testing, he said chemical testing may be able to show if particular spices were used to preserve the fruits.

Records at Mount Vernon show that George and Martha Washington were fond of cherries, at least when mixed with brandy. Martha Washington's recipe for a “cherry bounce” cocktail survives, and Washington wrote that he took a canteen of cherry bounce with him on a trip across the Alleghenies in 1784.

These cherries, though, were most likely bottled to be eaten simply as cherries, Boroughs said.

The quality of the preservation reflect a high caliber of work. Slaves ran the plantation's kitchen. The kitchen was overseen by an enslaved woman named Doll, who came to Mount Vernon in 1758 with Martha Washington, according to the estate.

“The enslaved folks who were taking care of the trees, picking the fruit, working in the kitchen, those would have been the folks that probably would have overseen and done this process,” Boroughs said. “It’s a highly skilled process. Otherwise they just wouldn’t have survived this way.”

The bottles were found only because Mount Vernon is doing a $40 million revitalization project of the mansion that they expect to be completed by the nation's 250th birthday in 2026.

“When we do archaeology, it’s destructive,” Boroughs said. “So unless we have a reason to disturb those resources, we tend not to.”
“In this case, because of these needed structural repairs to the mansion, the ground was going to be disturbed. So we looked there first,” he continued. “We didn’t expect to find all this.”

They know the bottles predate 1775 because that's when an expansion of the mansion led to the area being covered over with a brick floor.

Mount Vernon announced back in April, at the start of its archaeological work, that it had found two bottles. As the dig continued, the number increased to 35 in six distinct storage pits. Six of the bottles were broken, with the other 29 intact. Twelve held cherries, 16 held the other berries believed to be currants and gooseberries, and one larger bottle held both cherries and other berries.

Boroughs believes they have now uncovered all the cherries and berries that survived.

“There is a lot of information that we’re excited to get from these bottles,” he said.

Watch Megan Mullally warn Susan Sarandon about having sex with her cat in The Fabulous Four trailer

Bette Midler and Sheryl Lee Ralph also star in the upcoming ensemble comedy.

Baby boomer girls trip movies are all the rage — and now, Bette Midler , Susan Sarandon , Sheryl Lee Ralph , and Megan Mullally have booked a cinematic vacation together.

The actresses join forces in the first trailer for The Fabulous Four , which sees the quartet of multihyphenates embark on a getaway to Key West, Fla., together. "Look at us! The old gang back together again!" Marilyn (Midler) says as she greets her college buddies Lou (Sarandon), Kitty (Ralph), and Alice (Mullally). "Oh my God, so glad you're here."

Courtesy Bleecker Street

We immediately get a sense of each friend’s personality. Alice is the stoner goof of the group, repeatedly making jokes about and requests for weed, while Kitty seems more focused on sensual pleasures (when she finds a kegel ball, she asks if it vibrates).

Lou appears to be the squarest of the crew, as she’s mocked for FaceTiming her cats. "You're gonna be an old cat lady, and you're gonna be alone, and you're gonna have to have sex with your cats!" Alice warns. "People do it."

Marilyn loves attention — she's really into TikTok, and, more crucially, she surprises the group with the news that she's marrying someone new just two months following the death of her previous husband. "She got out there kinda quick," Kitty says after Marilyn asks the group to join her bridal party. "Takes longer to cancel a gym membership!" Lou retorts.

The strongest tension within the group is between Lou and Marilyn, who beefed about a boy decades ago. "Why was Lou so mad at you?" a young woman says at what appears to be a bachelorette party. "You stole her man?"

Marilyn rejects her hypothesis, but Kitty chimes in: "Yes, you did, back in the day!" Marilyn doesn't fight back. "I couldn’t make a bed, but I could break a bed," she says.

Later, we see Lou headshot a burglar on a bicycle using a kegel ball (don't ask), which goes viral on TikTok, much to Marilyn's chagrin. "TikTok was mine! You stole it from me," Midler's character yells. They tear each other’s clothing out of spite. "Is it just me, or do we need some champagne?" Alice suggests.

The Fabulous Four hits theaters July 26. Watch the full trailer above.

Ian McKellen hospitalized after falling from stage in London

The 85-year-old “Lord of the Rings” actor lost his footing during a fight scene in “Player Kings” at the Noel Coward Theatre. He is expected to recover.

Ian McKellen, whose six-decade career on screen and stage included roles such as the wizard Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings films, was hospitalized after falling from the stage during a performance in London on Monday.

Members of the audience were shocked as the 85-year-old actor lost his footing during a fight scene in “Player Kings” — an adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Henry IV” at the Noel Coward Theatre .

McKellen is expected to make a full recovery, the Associated Press reported, citing a theater spokesperson. Representatives for McKellen did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

McKellen was playing Sir John Falstaff — one of Shakespeare’s most famous comic characters, who appeared in four of his plays.

Shakespeare is thought to have drawn satirical inspiration for the character from Sir John Oldcastle, a powerful nobleman and soldier who was convicted of heresy. Early versions of the play bear his name, but it was changed, probably at the urging of his descendants, according to Shakespeare scholars.

In a statement shared on social media by staff of British theater publication the Stage, the producers of “Player Kings” thanked the audience and public for their well wishes after the actor’s fall.

Following a scan, doctors have said McKellen will “make a speedy and full recovery” and he is “in good spirits.”

Tuesday’s performance was canceled so the actor can rest.
