Royal Yacht Britannia Questions & Answers

royal yacht britannia to waverley station

Thank you for your question. The closest bus option would be Lothian Bus number 22, which departs from Princes Street to Ocean Terminal, where our Visitor Centre is located, regularly, for £1.70 each way (correct change needed). Alternatively, if you are planning to take an Edinburgh Bus Tour while visiting, you could take the hop-on, hop-off Majestic Bus Tour from Waverley Bridge, which also makes a stop at Britannia. We look forward to welcoming you on board soon!

Sorry not sure

royal yacht britannia to waverley station

Hi! You'll be delighted to visit the Royal Yacht. It's like a step back in Royal time.

As to which bus to be caught, I can't advise, as my husband and I, not being locals, caught an Uber.

This option was very reasonable. My suggestion is if you are arriving by train, is to ask for a bus connection when you are at the train station.

The Northern Belle - Flying Scotsman Steam Journey

Flying Scotsman Steam Special to The Royal Yacht Britannia

A luxury train journey to the Royal Yacht Britannia to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Flying Scotsman

Join the Northern Belle in a celebratory luxury train journey to Edinburgh & Royal Yacht Britannia hauled by the Flying Scotsman to mark 100 years of service!

This highly anticipated journey hauled by a legend of the railway sets off with a sparkling Mimosa cocktail as you take to your comfortable armchair seat. As The Flying Scotsman takes you towards the Scottish capital from York station (from Darlington to York the journey is diesel hauled). You will be served a delightful three-course brunch by the liveried stewards, your surroundings take you back to the era of the Golden Age of Travel.

On arrival at Waverley Station, you will be met by a coach to transfer you to Ocean Terminal, Leith, where the Royal Yacht Britannia is berthed. Having been berthed at Leith ever since it was decommissioned in 1997, the Royal Family’s beloved yacht was a place where they enjoyed many happy holidays. Today the Royal Yacht is one of Scotland’s most popular visitor attractions. Start the tour at the Visitor Centre, learning about the yacht’s rich history. Then tour the five main decks with the help of an audio guide. Highlights include the luxurious State Apartments, royal sleeping quarters and personal photographs of the monarch and her family. Also, make sure to visit the Bridge and the gleaming Engine Room. After touring the magnificent ship if time permits you may have some free time to explore Edinburgh.

It's then time to rejoin the train (which will be hauled by a vintage diesel locomotive) where you will be welcomed back aboard with a Champagne drinks reception accompanied by canapés and Caviar blinis followed by a delicious six-course dinner and sommelier-selected wine. ‍

‍ THE FLYING SCOTSMAN Built in Doncaster back in 1923 the Flying Scotsman was at the time the most powerful locomotive used by the London and North Eastern Railway. It was also the first locomotive to run a non-stop journey from London to Edinburgh.

Included in this Northern Belle Flying Scotsman Luxury Train Journey

  • Spectacular journey steam hauled by Flying Scotsman
  • Welcome sparkling Mimosa cocktail reception onboard
  • Delicious three-course brunch on the outward journey
  • Transfer to the Royal Yacht
  • Champagne drinks reception back on board with canapés and Caviar blinis
  • Sumptuous six-course dinner including: Award-winning Great British cheese board with Port to accompany, delicious dessert and a selection of petits fours
  • Sommelier’s specially selected bottle of wine per couple

What is the best way to get from our hotel near Waverly Station to the yacht? If a taxi, what is the best app to use?

On the return my husband will need to get to Johnny Walker for a tour and may be pressed for time. What is the fastest way to return? Thanks for any advice.

11 replies to this topic

Bus or Tram in around 20 minutes.

royal yacht britannia to waverley station

Tram or there is a direct bus from right opposite the Waverley Steps. Service is frequent and reliable.

royal yacht britannia to waverley station

The bus, double decker so you get wonderful views from the top.

If you find you are longer than expected at the Brittania then get a taxi back

royal yacht britannia to waverley station

Getting to Brittania from the E end of pPrinces Street.

The 16 bus will take you near, leaving you a couple of blocks to Ocean Terminal where the yacht is parked.

The 34 bus stops outside Marks&Spencers, a little further west, opposite the Scott monument, and stops at OT

The tram stops on St Andrew Square and stops at OT

On retutn, to JW

The 36 bus goes from OT, and your nearest stop to JW in at the end of Queensferry Street. Ask the driver.

You can take thev tram but the nearest stops will leave you 2 or 3 blocks to walk.

Or, to answer the question as asked. Take a taxi. About £20 each way, I'd guess.

Thank you for the advice. Can we pay via credit card if we use the bus? And if we need a taxi, what is the best app to use? Thanks so much.

Pay the bus driver by tapping a xard when boarding. Pay for a tram likewise by tapping a card on the machine on the platform. Most taxis take a card. check when boarding.

Taxi Web and apps

https://www.citycabs.co.uk/book-a-taxi/

https://www.taxis-edinburgh.co.uk/

Uber or private hire are other possibilities. But I just phone City Cabs to make a booking. I'm old-fashioned.

Yes you can pay by card. On the bus, just tap the pad by the driver, you won't get a ticket.

For tram, you use your card to obtain a paper ticket before you board and you need to keep that ticket as it will probably be checked on board the tram.

How much time are you giving the the Britannia? As there is so much to see. I think the audio guide gives you 35 different locations. We spent a whole morning looking around and then had lunch in the restaurant. Best, no to rush this really fabulous venue.

We got a taxi there and after we finished, we went to the taxi rank and got a taxi back.

Regarding taxi apps, why make it complicated? Just hail a cab in the street, just like in every other major city in the world. Or look for one parked at one of the many taxi ranks around the city (including at the Ocean Terminal).

But, really, a taxi is not necessary for going to and from the Ocean Terminal. The tram stops right outside, and will take you to and from Princes Street quickly and reliably.

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

Treasures of the Moscow Metro: Orange Line stations that honor the Arctic and Baltic

Medvdedkovo.

The interior decoration of Medvedkovo station is devoted to the severe and unforgiving nature of the Russian North. On the walls one sees eight metallic bas-reliefs with a polar bear on an ice floe, the hunt for snow gooses, reindeer sledding and more.

This is one of the most lavishly decorated stations on the Orange Line. The walls have 48 mosaics devoted to Russian cities that surround Moscow, including their coats of arms. Near each mosaic stands the name of the city.

There’s a large colorful mosaic of girls in traditional Russian dresses above the entrance to the platform. The image on the opposite side depicts medieval Russian horsemen and a chronicler. This image is devoted to the ancient epic Slavic poem,   The Tale of Igor's Campaign .

Botanichesky Sad

This station brings one to the largest botanical garden in Europe, and the station’s interior decoration is devoted to the topic of natural beauty. On the walls, one sees metallic bas-reliefs with simple images of flowers, apples and grapes.

Rizhskiy Railway Station is located at this metro stop. From here, trains travel to the Latvian capital. No surprise that the station, which was designed by the Soviet Latvian architects, was dedicated to that Baltic country and its capital, Riga.

The yellow and brown colors epitomize different kinds of amber that is plentiful in the Baltic Sea region. On the columns one sees images related to Latvia: Riga’s port, the Latvian Academy of Science, the Central Market (one of the largest in Europe), Old Riga and more.

Tretyakovskaya

This station leads to the famous State Tretyakov Gallery, the foremost repository of Russian fine art anywhere in the world. The station walls are decorated with the bronze bas-reliefs of Russian artists, sculptors and icon painters. Above the portal on the way to the escalators one sees a large image of the Tretyakov Gallery.

This station brings you to the famous Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy (VDNKH) – one of the world’s largest exhibition centers. During the Soviet period it represented the best industrial achievements of all Soviet Republics. Today, it offers visitors a wide range of activities, from shopping to shows and skating, and other sport activities.

Despite its name, the station is modestly decorated. At the exit one sees a huge modern (1997) ceramic image. Made according to traditions of the Old Russian style of Gzhel, the image depicts the 19 th   century market, as well as several Russian monasteries.

Besides Moscow and St. Petersburg, several other Russian cities have metro systems, and most stations are masterpieces of art and architecture. Find out more about them.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
