COMING SOON!

1. right of admission, covid-19 management plan.

In line with Government protocol, Luxury Catamaran Charters have a comprehensive management plan in place. Keeping safe, of course, is up to every individual as well:  we encourage you to take extra precautions at all times to stop the spread of the virus and do your part to flatten the curve. This includes wearing your mask when out in public, keeping a 1.5m distance from others to practice safe social distancing, washing your hands regularly, and not touching your face. If you feel ill or unwell, please remain indoors, and should you experience any COVID-19 symptoms – please consult with your doctor immediately.

Our management plan is based on the standard approach to reducing the spread of Covid-19:

  • Company Policies and Procedures We have explored all the governmental and health sector recommendations, and have adjusted our policies and procedures accordingly.
  • Risk assessment and adjustment strategies We realise that Covid-19 management is a moving target; we continually update and adjust strategies when necessary.
  • Employee training methodologies We understand that staff training and buy-in to the Luxury Catamaran Charters protocols are an intrinsic part of the process and continually train and update staff members on the necessary requirements, functions, and legislation.
  • Security Protocols There can be no breach of the regulations; we have strict controls in place to monitor processes.

We have taken into account the V&A Waterfront recommendations and criteria when setting up the procedures: their plans are intrinsic to the safety of the Waterfront, and we work within their parameters. We are constantly monitoring governmental regulations and recommendations, and will immediately adjust our protocols to meet the demands.

Our staff and guests are our lifeblood; we will do everything in our power to keep them safe in this time of crisis. If we all work together in this regard we can beat this virus and Luxury Catamaran Charters can return to a full schedule of cruises in absolute safety.

Serenity is a 2022, Bali 4.8 luxury sailing charter catamaran. After sailing from the factory in France she underwent  extensive upgrades that were not available from the factory prior to commencing charter in The Virgin Islands.

Serenity is 48' 11" in overall length with a 28.7' Beam (Width).  She has a total of 5 cabins each with their own toilet, vanity, and shower plus one additional bedroom for a third crew member if required.  One bedroom is occupied by crew allowing for eight adult guests to comfortably charter this vessel.  Guest bedroom layout consists of one owners suite with queen and three large queen standard guest rooms.

Serenity has a large upper deck with plenty of space to hang with the captain, a large solid foredeck seating and lounging area that typically stays dry under sail unlike most catamarans, a convertible saloon area with garage door style rear allowing for 180 degree open air dining in good weather, and complete coverage from the elements during bad weather.  Location has a fully equipped galley that is an open concept kitchen area most notably offering a full size refrigerator unlike typical charter boats.

Under sail Serenity has an upgraded square top mainsail which increases sail surface area resulting in greater speed in any winds.  Additionally she has a secondary head sail (Code Zero) allowing for optimal sail area down wind.  When the winds are calm Serenity is equipped with twin diesel engines to help get you to your destination on time.  In summary, Serenity was built to outpace the other cruisers.

Meet The Crew! Captain Brooke Hey there, I´m Brooke, a water baby born and raised in the breathtaking oceans of South Africa. Growing up surrounded by the wild beauty of our seas, I stumbled upon a passion that would shape my life - sailing. At just 16, I snagged my Day Skippers, setting the course for my journey into the world of yachting. Fueled by an insatiable thirst for adventure, I sailed far beyond my familiar shores, eventually finding myself at the helm. In 2017, fresh out of high school, I set sail for the Mediterranean - the French Riviera, Amalfi Coast, Monaco, and Sicily became my playground, and every wave taught me something new. The Caribbean beckoned in 2019, where I worked as a deck/stew. But as fate would have it, the challenges of Covid brought me back to where it all began - South Africa. Turning adversity into an opportunity, I decided to seize the moment and pursue my Captain´s License. Since then, my journey has been nothing short of epic. I found love, crossed the vast Atlantic, became a certified Divemaster with hundreds of dives logged, and now, I´m living the dream as the captain of my own yacht. As a certified Yachtmaster with thousands of miles under my belt, my confidence comes from the wealth of experiences I´ve gained. Now, at the helm of Serenity, I´m inviting you to join me on this captivating journey. With beautiful beaches, sensational sailing, and dazzling diving all within reach, your experience on board Serenity is not just a trip - it´s a story waiting to be written. Get ready for an adventure led by a fearless captain, where every wave is a chapter in the tale of the sea.

My family of 4 adults just had an amazing week with Captain Brooke and Chef Kylie on Serenity. Due to winter weather, we had delays with two of our arrivals and Brooke and Kylie had it all worked out to accommodate late arrivals and alternate pickup locations. Adjustment were made in our itinerary to get us to our requested destinations as well as the locations that Captain Brooke knew would be good sailing for the weather that we had. The food was amazing at every meal and we had more than we could have possibly eaten. Cold drinks to satisfy a wide range of tastes were available and Kylie went out of her way to fulfill a few non-traditional tastes! Game nights with the crew, dinner together at Saba Rock, trips ashore…Brooke and Kaylie became our extended family for the week and we had so much fun. Serenity is a beautiful yacht with comfortable seating and sleeping. She is kept in top shape and is very comfortable to sail aboard. This was our first charter vacation, and our entire family felt like it was the best vacation that we had ever been on. I can’t give enough credit to Brooke and Kylie for a tremendous week in the BVI! Leave your options open on your preference sheet and you will not be disappointed with the trip that this crew puts together for you. Happy sailing!

Can´t go wrong with Brooke and Kylie

Wow, what a blast we had on the Catamaran charter with Captain Brooke and Chef Kylie! The Serenity was a beautiful vessel and Brooke handled it as true professional. When we had some tough weather or A/C technical issues, we never lost confidence and comfort with Brooke at the helm. Kylie created some truly beautiful and delicious meals. And the desserts were just phenomenal. It was unbelievable what she could do in that small galley kitchen. Brooke and Kylie were so attentive and helpful; organizing activities and flexing our schedule as needed based on weather; arranging water and land taxis when needed; showing us the coolest spots on the islands. They joined us for a quite rainy dinner at Saba Rock and entertained us onboard with custom cocktails and games. It was really hard to say goodbye to these two new family members.

Smooth sailing on stormy seas!

Pool’s open…. At the back of Serenity with Brooke and Kylie! What a treat to sail on with these amazing hard working young women! Captain Brooke is a steady, dedicated and capable breath of fresh air. Chef Kylie can whip up five star meals you can barely get in any restaurant. We asked for desserts… desserts we got and they were as innovative as they were beautiful and delicious! The yacht was gorgeous and pristine. Brooke runs a tight ship when it comes to maintaining our personal floating hotel. She is quick and efficient and manages everything as if with magic. Our sail week was unfortunately during some of the weirdest weather and Captain Brooke navigated us through it with aplomb! She was quick on her feet to find alternate sails and activities to keep us happy and busy! These young women handled several different personalities and needs with such grace and agility. So relaxing to be in the care of these two inspired and dedicated women. It was sad to say goodbye to my two new daughters! May we sail again soon!

The only way to tour the Virgin Islands!

This has by far been my favorite vacation ever! I don´t think I want to vacation any other way again! The Crew, Jake and Eddie were awesome!! The views are absolutely breath taking, the history we learned.. these guys really know some interesting facts! Did I mention the snorkeling??? It was out of this world!! Foxy´s is a must if you go to the BVI´s as well as The Baths. We had so much fun!! The next to last day the guys put together Serenity Olympics for us!! They really worked well with our group to make sure we had a great time!!

Awesome Virgin Island Trip

Best trip ever!!! Boat was awesome. All of the stops in the BVI and US VI were great. However, the highlight of the trip was Captain Jake and Chef Kylie! They were perfect. Felt like they were part of our family.

Perfection!

Kylie and Jake are the absolute best! Kylie’s food was above 5 star status. Everything tasted wonderful. Jake was the ultimate captain. From knowing what stop to get to at a specific time and keeping us comfortable while in open waters, everything was perfect. They both also make great bartenders. Would recommend this trip to anyone and everyone. Best vacation ever because of Kylie and Jake!

We Love Jake and Kylie!!!

This was the best trip ever because of Jake and Kylie!!! They are the best captain and chef. They are so thoughtful, selfless, joyful, and kind. They truly felt like our sister and brother. We can’t wait to do this trip again with them. They make the best food and drinks. They are so fun and showed us the best parts of the islands. I’m so thankful for them. The boat is also amazing. I wish I could live on Serenity!! This trip was so perfect and I never wanted to leave.

Kylie and Jake = THE BEST!

Wow. Wow. Wow. Best vacation EVER!! Kylie and Jake are the kindness, most fun, thoughtful, coolest, cutest, most beautiful on the inside and out captain and chef! Loveeeee them so much! Never wanted to leave. We will be back!

Thank you for the amazing trip! Kylie and Jake made this trip a real pleasure! From the stops and customized itinerary to what our group wanted to see to the presentation of breakfast and drinks! Boat was very comfortable, new and clear. Highly highly recommended!

Above and beyond any of our expectations

From the welcoming glasses of sparkling wine when we stepped aboard for the first time to the amazing water activities to the delicious food that was 5 star quality in variety, taste and presentation, to the expert guidance around the waters of the BVI and the USVI, we were continuously wowed by the crew of the Serenity. Kylie and Jake are husband and wife and the crew of the Serenity and they went above and beyond to make our week aboard the brand new sailing cat one of our most luxurious vacations ever. The boat is extremely comfortable and well maintained to the best standards. Jake is a very professional captain but as a conductor of all our water activities, he made sure the kids (2 12 year old boys and a 10 year old girl) had an amazing time. The grown ups sometimes joined in - once we were able to put down that cocktail that was always delicious and dangerously easy to appear. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were always a treat - each meal a truly top notch dining experience. It was hard to believe that they were prepared in that galley that´s smaller than most kitchens. The cabins were small as was expected but they very comfortable with queen sized beds - I had my best sleep in years during that week. Each of the 3 cabins had an attached bathroom and I cannot stress how important that was to our comfort levels. The boys decided to sleep in the bunk beds - those were tight but they didn´t mind it at all. They used a 4th bathroom that was just outside the bunk bed space. Kylie and Jake were able to effortlessly guide us through our time on board - from suggesting destinations to sail to, to suggesting an itinerary, to making sure that everything that was needed to sail a boat with 9 people on board was taken care of without us noticing or worrying about a thing. The Serenity is a lovely boat and Kylie and Jake are a wonderful people and a hardworking and extremely friendly crew. We are 2 families who have sailed bareboat (without a crew) together before so we can appreciate the work that goes into making it seem effortless and worry free. I cannot recommend this experience highly enough. I hope I get an opportunity to sail with them again.

Amazing Experience

I wish I were a more eloquent writer, as I know this will not properly communicate the amazing week we had onboard Serenity with Jake and Kylie. Serenity is a beautiful boat—clean, new, lovely cabins. The BVI is an amazing place with so much to see. That being said, what made this trip an incredible, unforgettable experience was being with Captain Jake and Kylie. Jake is an accomplished captain, who made us feel immediately comfortable. He answered (a ridiculous amount of) questions, shared his knowledge of sailing and took us on so many unique adventures. We snorkeled, swam, saw beautiful beaches, hit up such fun beach bars. Every day was something new. We had two teenage boys that Jake did everything to help make the trip more exciting for. Our oldest wanted to fish—-so lines were out at every opportunity (even when he was sleeping). He coordinated efoil lessons on Saba Rock—which was totally his idea after meeting our kids (must do if interested in something out of the ordinary). We had a guided tour (with both Jake and Kylie) through the Baths (OMG beautiful!) and saw the most breathtaking views in St John. The kids (and husband) rode tubes behind dingy, Jake and Kylie showed the kids how to get the sails up to sail—-we just did it all. At NO point, did Jake seem to tire of requests—-he was there to make sure every moment was safe, exciting and enjoyable. Kylie welcomed us from the first moment with her warm smile, amazing food and cocktails/mocktails. We had more food than we could ever eat—-and each presentation was beautiful. After being on a beach or a snorkel, we would board the boat with a beautiful snack/drink combination. (The boys quietly told me they felt like celebrities every time this happened). Kylie had her hands full with our family—a food allergy and picky teenagers forced her to vary her dishes at every given meal, and she did with ease. Her homemade desserts were absolutely incredible—we are all still discussing her caramel dessert that we can’t remember the name of—but hails from her native South Africa. She did all the little things that go unnoticed, but make you feel so well take care of. Filling drinks while playing cards with family, putting things away—making sure we had sunscreen and bug spray. All those mom things that I ordinarily do—she had already done. On top of these two being an amazing, TOP notch crew, they are two of the most lovely people we have ever had the pleasure to meet. Sharing a boat is a special, intimate experience and when we left, we all felt as if we were leaving family members behind. As a group, we laughed, played games at night, and enjoyed every bit of their company. We LOVED Serenity, we LOVED exploring the BVI, but our trip was MADE by this wonderful couple. We are already planning how we can sail with them again…and raving about them to anyone who asks. They are more than the ultimate professionals—they are two of the most special people we have had the privilege to spend time with. Anyone who is lucky enough to sail with them will be more than impressed.

5/5 Amazing Trip

The trip was absolutely amazing. It had all the amenities of a 5 star hotel but with the flexibility to go, do and see anything you wanted. The food and drinks were fantastic and plentiful and the captain and chef amazing. We cannot express how pleased we were by the entire experience from the initial booking with boats at Sea to the farewell goodbyes to Kylie and Jake! The yacht was beautiful and in great shape. It was her first paid charter, so the expectation was high and she exceeded our expectations in space and amenities and just how comfortable it was for a full week. We never felt crowded or ran out of things to do. We made everyone leave the electronics off for the week and with 12-, 16-, and 20-year-old sons, there wasn´t a whisper of complaining. Of course our Captain, or should I say DJ Jake was jamming great tunes the whole time for our entertainment and honored every request! Captain Jake took our 3 sons tubing from the tender and I asked him to beat them up a little as they were professional tubers having tubed many summers in Northern Michigan. I was pleased to see strawberries on all of their elbows the next day from the tube and they agreed it was one of their best tube rides ever. We used the fishing poles daily and hooked into several Tarpon and a Barracuda out trolling. There was also a water wing, paddle boards and inflatable Kayak that all got used as well. The snorkel gear was heavily used! The food was incredible. Chef Kylie is a rockstar! I am a retired restaurant manager/chef and was very impressed with the variety, quality, and freshness of the cuisine. From the yogurt parfaits to start our mornings before the main breakfast course to the filet and shrimp dinner and all the snacks in between, we couldn´t have asked for more! Everyone had their favorite meal prepared throughout the week and the cocktails to go along with the meals really hit the spot. Even our 12 and 16 year old boys had mocktails to match our cocktails and felt very included. Even at home they are asking for the ´Jake Killer´ our captain´s version of the famous ´Pain Killer´ We let Jake to the planning and had no hard-set itinerary. It was extremely relaxing that way and all the pressure was on our captain to make sure he took us to the spots that he thought we would like best. After-all he is the expert, not us! Captain Jake was extremely knowledgeable and helpful throughout the trip. He shared facts about the islands and personal experiences about each and every place we saw and stopped at. He was as excited as we were when we came across underwater delights. He made sure we saw Lobster, turtles, rays and even an Eagle Ray, sharks, and every fish that was on the fish chart. He was sure to guide everyone to snorkeling that matched their skill set and made sure nobody felt uncomfortable. He was with us every step of the way, or in this case every stroke. He guided us to on-shore excursions as well and educated us so well that we felt like we had been there before. We cannot say enough about both Captain Jake and Chef Kylie....The Best!!

Dream Vacation Come True

´Truly the trip of my dreams! Our family of five (mom, dad and three boys ages 12, 16, 19) had such an amazing week on this luxurious and comfortable catamaran. Our hosts, Jake and Kylie were the perfect pairing for us and we thoroughly enjoyed their company! Not knowing a lot about the USVI, and only that we knew we´d like to focus on St. John to snorkel, explore and relax, we asked Jake and Kylie to take us to the places they liked most. Jake sailed us to some of the most beautiful bays, swam with us to great snorkel locations, took the kids tubing behind the dingy, and took us out for a day sail. Every day was filled with perfect amount of activity and relaxing. Can´t list them all but a few favorites were snorkeling at Waterlemon Cay, a stop at Lime Out Taco Bar, Maho Beach and Salt Pond Bay when Kylie packed a wonderful beach bag for us with all the things we´d need for a few hours on the beach. They really are the most gracious hosts, eager to do everything to make your stay relaxing and feel completely taken care of. Kylie prepared wonderfully delicious and artful meals that I´m inspired to re-create. Snacks and fresh fruit were always on hand (necessary with 3 boys), and cocktails and mocktails were a very fun part of every day! The boys regularly requested the Jake Killer! Try it! Jake and Kylie are a great pair, they do it all from ensuring clean comfortable quarters to delicious and filling food and beverage, music requests, tours to any place you want to go, stories and history of the area, great directions for excursions, and just all around fun conversations. They made us feel like Serenity was our home for the week and we felt like family in a very short time! I can´t say enough about this amazing vacation! We miss Jake and Kylie and would be thrilled to sail with them again to other places in the USVI, BVI or even beyond. You will love your stay on Serenity with Jake and Kylie-beautiful souls!´

An amazing wonderful vacation

´Sailing though the BVI on Serenity was fabulous. The boat is new, was quite comfortable and had more pillows than we knew what to do with. Jake is a knowledgeable Captain who made the trip fun for all especially the kids. Ask him to make you his specialty drink - the Jake Killer - you won’t be disappointed. Kiley, the chef and all around awesome person has cooking skills that far exceeded our expectations. The food was abundant and absolutely delicious - every single meal! Her cocktails and mocktails rocked too! Jake and Kiley were a great team, very accommodating and they really took great care of us! We explored many different islands, snorkeled, hiked, fished, did some water sports, relaxed on the beach and much more. The sunsets were breathtaking. I would take this trip, with Jake and Kiley, again in a heartbeat.´

After my brother tragically died, I knew I wanted to pursue adventure. Now my family and I live on a catamaran.

  • Rob Hamill's brother was killed by the Khmer Rouge when his boat drifted into Cambodian waters.
  • Hamill now lives on a catamaran with his wife and sons and honors his brother's legacy.
  • He feels he is able to have adventures and time with his family that his brother never got.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Rob Hamill , a 60-year-old former rowing Olympian from New Zealand, about how the murder of his brother by the Khmer Rouge inspired his family's decision to live at sea.

The Khmer Rouge was a Communist political regime ruled by dictator Pol Pot in Cambodia between 1975 and 1979. They were responsible for the deaths of nearly 2 million people .

The essay has been edited for length and clarity.

I grew up in a local small town with a population of 15,000 in a beachside community in New Zealand on the east coast of the North Island called Whakatane.

It was a pretty normal Kiwi upbringing.

I was the last of five children. I was closest to my sister, who was four years older than me. My eldest brother, Kerry, was 12 years older than me. He was probably the one I knew the least. But we were very close, especially as I grew older.

My father loved sailing. He was in the merchant Navy during World War II. He had a real love of the sea.

That heavily influenced Kerry. He ended up going to Australia in his early 20s, looking for sailing opportunities. He went up to Darwin and bought a boat called Foxy Lady.

Kerry wrote really lovely letters. You became part of his story as he told it to us, and we lived vicariously through his adventures.

I was 14 in August 1978 when the letters stopped.

My brother was killed by the Khmer Rouge

The last letter he sent us was from Malaysia's east coast. He and his crew got blown off into Cambodian waters and took shelter on King Island, about 50 kilometers offshore.

Around August 20, his boat was attacked by a gunboat. Kerry was captured by the Khmer Rouge.

Kerry and his friend Stuart Glass, a Canadian, were on deck at the time of the attack. Stuart was shot. They both went overboard, and Stuart died in Kerry's arms. He buried him at sea.

Kerry and John Dewhirst, another survivor on the boat, were taken hostage. A few days later, they were taken to Phnom Penh to the Tuol Sleng prison and tortured for months. We're pretty sure Kerry was executed there exactly two months later, in October 1978.

It was 16 months between his last letter and hearing what happened.

My parents were beside themselves. They wrote letters to different ports all over Asia, trying to find the news.

I heard the news around January 1980. Timelines are vague, but I vividly remember that a neighbor rang us one day saying, "You need to get the paper."

My second-eldest brother John and I drove down to the local shop. There was this pile of papers with the headline: Hamill captured by the Khmer Rouge.

Hearing about my brother's demise — reading about it in the paper — was a real shock. That was the first time I grieved.

John took Kerry's death very hard. They were about a year apart. They did everything together as kids. He came home, and there was considerable unrest as we all struggled.

He messed with some drugs along the way that had an effect on him. He got very depressed. So we had a memorial for Kerry, and then a few months later, John took his life.

I feel almost certainly that if Kerry were here, John would be here today as well.

Two funerals in quick succession shaped our family

I became a bit of a loose cannon, a reasonably big drinker during my school years.

But sport was my savior.

After leaving school, I did this electrical apprenticeship but had no passion for electricity. I was so unhappy, so I took up rugby. Every Kiwi bloke has a go at rugby at some point in their lives.

I did that for a couple of years, and then when I was 19, one of my mates said, "I'm going to try out this rowing thing tomorrow morning at the local club. We're going to just have a go. Do you want to come down?"

I remember going to the first race we had. We won by the thinnest of margins. I was absolutely euphoric.

With racing, you can just hammer yourself so hard, push yourself to the near feeling of death, and then the next minute, you're OK.

I trained harder again, and pretty soon, I was going, "Well, I want to go to the top of this thing."

I rowed in the World Championships for many years, and then the Olympics in 1996. In 1997, I won the first Atlantic rowing race.

Related stories

It was a huge adventure, a big leap into the unknown. There had been several people who'd attempted to row oceans prior to this, but more people had walked Everest than rowed an ocean at that point.

We started in Tenerife, and six weeks later — 41 days later — Phil and I rowed into Barbados and won the race.

I discovered I wasn't at peace with the deaths in my family when I did the Atlantic race. When I was at sea, I grieved.

Every day, at some point, I wept like a baby — when I was on the oars, but usually in the cabin where you could take shelter.

It made me realize my grieving process was very stunted, and I knew there was something I was going to have to do about it.

In 2009, I got the opportunity to testify against Comrade Duch , a representative of the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot, the first person to be brought to any sort of justice for the loss of millions of lives.

This guy was arrested and revealed to be the commandant at the prison where my brother was incarcerated. He ruled with a very heavy hand in a very brutal and clinical way.

My mom had died earlier, and my dad had dementia, so I told the story from my perspective, where I saw the trauma and how it affected each of them.

I did the best I could for the memory of my brother, my parents, and the people of Cambodia.

I just hope I left a little legacy there for them.

When I started my own family, I decided to prioritize experiences together

I met my wife Rachel in 1991. During that time, Rachel and her sister competed as triathletes for Ireland.

We knew each other for about 10 years before we got together. We became friends over time, and then it happened when we were both single and she was visiting New Zealand.

She came out to help her sister, who had had twins. She ended up spending three or four months and went home, engaged to me. We got married about six months later, in 2001.

The boys came along very quickly after that. Finn in 2002, Declan in 2004, and Ivan in 2007.

My parents sent Kerry and John off to boarding school when they were 15 and 16.

My memories of Kerry and John would have been much stronger if we had time to grow up together as a close-knit family.

Rachel and I wanted to be with our kids, have experiences, and grow together. So then the question became, "How do we do that?"

Travel is a great way to do that. After the Atlantic race, I had a bit of a career in speaking. Through that, I managed to raise enough money to buy our boat, the Javelot, in 2014.

The following year, we did a seven-month South Pacific tour and took the boys out of school. In 2018, we went full-time.

The homeschooling pretty quickly took a bit of a backseat. Ivan, our youngest, now 16, has never been to school. The other two did do schooling until we started going away for longer periods of time.

We do learning by doing. We talk a lot about world politics, we talk about local community politics. We go offshore and try to interact with the locals as much as possible.

In 2022, we spent two or three months in Darwin, where Kerry had lived for quite some time.

Through his letters, we knew where he had been, generally speaking, and we followed his path. It was amazing.

We went to Cambodia for Christmas 2022. It was emotional and fantastic, especially for the kids who had listened to this whole story told through their father, mother, uncles, and aunts.

We chose a life of adventure

If you're going to do adventurous things, things are going to happen.

( Editor's Note: In September 2023, Hamill's son Finn experienced a deep water blackout while freediving near the family's catamaran in Thailand. He survived.)

Finn didn't have a clue what happened. He thought he had made it to the surface, and we were going, "No, mate, you were out. You were gone."

About half an hour later, the secondary drowning started kicking in with his breathing.

We called for help, and it took about three or four hours for the boat to come out from the mainland to take him in. He didn't need any intervention at the end other than a saline drip.

It was exceedingly scary. But in the moment, there was almost a serenity about it. Watching how the boys handled it and the way everyone did their job, I could not have hoped for a better response, that show of character under pressure.

What Rachel and I are doing is very much an experiment. We've got no Ph.D to say, "Oh yes, this is the way to raise children." It's real gut instinct stuff — but I believe it's working.

We've got kids who are worldly, beautiful, humble, thoughtful, kind, funny, and adventurous.

I feel privileged and lucky to have this life with Rachel and the boys.

I sometimes dwell on what might have been — that my parents, Kerry, and John could have been sharing this with us. I know they would have absolutely loved it.

All you can do is live the life they might have otherwise had. A life of adventure.

TOURS OF FORT SUMTER

Tours on Fort Sumter are very limited. Fort Sumter Tours , a local tour company, is the only authorized National Park Service concessioner of Fort Sumter.

They offer 1 - 3 tours per day, depending on the time of year.

The tours include a 30-minute ferry ride to and from the fort and 60 minutes self-guided tour of the island. The total length of the tour is just under 2.5 hours.

During the 30-minute boat ride out to the island, a pre-recorded voice discusses various points of interest, including the history of Fort Sumter and Charleston Harbor.

Since you won't be allowed to bring your own snacks with you there is a snack bar available onboard the ferry.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a National Park Service Rangers who provides a 10-minute overview of the island. Guests are then given 45-60 minutes to explore the fort and the museum on their own.

Save some time and listen to the  National Park ranger s talk here .

There is no guided tour around Fort Sumter. However, signs label different points of interest, and if interested, the Fort Sumter Tours can arrange a guided tour through the museum for an additional cost.

If you would like a more in-depth tour of the history and significance of Fort Sumter, consider taking our Charleston Civil War Tour .

The tour is a nice complement for those planning a trip out to the island. It details the historic Fort Sumter Battle, as well as many other sites around Charleston that were significant during the Civil War.

FERRY DEPARTURE LOCATIONS

Fort Sumter is on an island and is only accessible by boat. Tours have ferries that leave from Liberty Square and Patriots Point in Charleston.

It is suggested that guests book reservations in advance. Again, Fort Sumter Tours is the only authorized concessioner of Fort Sumter that actually docks at the Fort.

Fort Sumter Ferry

At Liberty Square, you can find the Fort Sumter Visitor Center. The building and exhibits inside are free to enjoy. Restrooms and a water bottle fill station are available for your convenience.

If you are coming from the city center to Liberty Square , head east on Calhoun Street, then turn right onto East Bay Street. Continue straight on East Bay Street until you reach Liberty Square at the intersection of Concord Street and Adger's Wharf.

And if you want to head to Patriots Point , head east on Calhoun Street, then turn left onto East Bay Street. Continue straight on East Bay Street until you reach the intersection with Morrison Drive. Turn right onto Morrison Drive and follow it until you reach Patriots Point on the right side.

History Comes to Life

Several reviews indicate that history buffs and beginners alike can find a lot to enjoy about Fort Sumter.

That being said, some tourists felt that their experience was made less enjoyable by guests who didn't know anything about the location and had no interest in learning about its historical significance.

Although this doesn't seem to be a common issue, it is worth noting that some audiences may not understand the importance of a site like this.

As long as you don't let that affect your enjoyment of the attraction, there shouldn't be a problem.

Original Artifacts

Several significant artifacts from Fort Sumter remain, including a cannon that was actually used during the war and the flag that was flown over the fort.

A majority of tourists appreciate the maintenance of these important items, allowing them to see an actual piece of history in the best possible quality.

Many tourists feel that these objects are monuments that remind us of the struggle that this country has undergone, providing a greater appreciation for the freedom we enjoy today.

Flag Raising

Many tourists have noted that if you take the first tour of the day, you can take part in the flag-raising ceremony at Fort Sumter.

Tourists describe the event as "wonderful and touching," paying honor to the fallen heroes of our past.

One could imagine that raising the flag over this historic site would easily put you in the right frame of mind to learn all about its past.

Great Views

Many visitors have also enjoyed the fantastic views of Charleston.

Guests who took the tour (which includes a boat ride) were quite impressed with the trip both to and from the site, indicating that there were a lot of wonderful photo opportunities along the way.

Some tourists even mentioned seeing dolphins during the boat ride, making the outing even more pleasurable.

Fort Sumter Museum

If just visiting the fort isn't enough, the museum located on-site should provide plenty of historical context for the landmark.

Guests recommend using the museum either to take a break from walking around the grounds or to learn more about Fort Sumter while you're there.

South Carolina Aquarium

This is an excellent option for families, allowing them to have a wonderful experience of both the history and the natural beauty of Charleston.

You'll start off with a visit to Fort Sumter and finish the day at the South Carolina Aquarium .

While most of these combo packages focus primarily on historical sites, this one also provides an opportunity to learn about a variety of marine life. If you're looking for fun activities that everyone in your family can enjoy, this is a pretty good deal.

  • Ticket Prices: $47 for Adults | $33 for Children
  • Duration: 3-4 hours, Daily

It might not come as a surprise, but this aquarium is very well rated on TripAdvisor. Guests tend to enjoy the opportunity to see some of the aquatic life that you'll find in the waters off the coast of South Carolina.

fort sumter boat tours

Fort Sumter holds a special significance in the course of US history. It was this relatively unassuming military post where the Civil War began in earnest. Today, it is a popular attraction and opens for visitors to explore. This article serves as your guide to making the most of your tour of the site.

Fort Sumter, along with nearby Fort Moultrie , forms a designated National Historical Park of South Carolina. Fort Sumter was indelibly etched into American history when, on the 12th of April 1861, Confederate forces open fired on the US garrison.

The park is open year round but closes for Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. The visitor center is open each day from 9 am to 5 pm.

In preparation for your visit and tour it is critical to check the boat schedule. Boats depart from two locations: Patriots Point (Mount Pleasant) and Liberty Square in downtown Charleston. Peak season runs from March 1 to November 30. During this time there are three daily departures from Liberty Square and two from Patriots Point.

From December 1 to February 28, there are two daily departures from Liberty Square and one from Patriots Point. The period from December 26 to December 31 reverts to the peak season timetable.

Liberty Square also hosts the Visitor Education Center - a free service and one that is critically important in learning about the fascinating history of the fort. Note that Fort Moultrie is also open from 9 am to 5 pm from Friday to Sunday.

Tours & Particpation

An iconic part of the daily ritual for park staff is the raising and lowering of the US flag. Visitors on the first ferry out to the site can assist rangers in raising the Stars and Stripes, while visitors on the final ferry out can assist in lowering and folding the flag.

Fort Moultrie

Fort Moultrie has lower visitation than Fort Sumter but still offers guided tours twice daily (11 am and 2 pm). However, it is open all year round for walking and exploring.

Current fees are $10 for adults and the site is free for children aged 15 and under. If you intend to visit in a group twice or more during a year, consider purchasing an annual pass for $35, which covers the card holder and up to three adults.

America the Beautiful Federal Lands Pass Holders enjoy free access, as do school tour groups. The latter require advance reservations and should reach out to the site staff at (843) 883-3123.

Strictly speaking, there is no entrance fee for Fort Sumter per se. However, the island is accessible only by ferry and private boats are not allowed.

To get the most out of your visit, we recommend booking an acclaimed tour aboard the Carolina Belle. You'll be engrossed in sightseeing and scenery suitable for the whole family, and local experts offer narrated insight into the history of the site.

Pets and alcoholic beverages are not permitted aboard the boat. Although every effort is made to make the tour accessible, ramps used for access are sometimes unavailable due to adverse weather conditions.

Visitors from outside the area should consider seeking accommodation in Charleston.

Fort Sumter

On April 12th, 1861, the first shots were fired on Fort Sumter, which led to the outbreak of America’s bloodiest war.  Fort Sumter is a fascinating place to visit, and only accessible by taking a 30 minute boat ride through the Charleston Harbor. After arriving at the fort, guests will learn about the major events that led to the outbreak of the American Civil War. Historians will provide detailed information about the fort and its pivotal role in the war between the states. The park also has a museum and small gift shop. After exploring the fort, cruise back to port, enjoying panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Charleston's bustling harbor. The fort is quite large and requires significant walking and climbing stairs, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes. You should allow a minimum of one hour travel time and another hour to tour the fort. Buying tickets in advance, either online or at the departure locations, is highly recommended. The Fort Sumter ferry departs from the Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center in Liberty Square, next to the South Carolina Aquarium, and also from Patriots Point Maritime Museum .

How To Visit Fort Sumter (Guided Tour Vs Self-Guided)

November 25, 2023 //  by  Southern Trippers

Planning on visiting Fort Sumter Charleston? Here you will find a first-hand experience of touring the grounds! Enjoy a visit during a weekend in Charleston , or maybe you want to explore the city for longer and plan for a whole week.

Fort Sumter is located in Charleston, South Carolina, and is best known as a significant structure of American history. It was the first battle of the Civil War and this sea fort has witnessed events that shaped America’s story.

Come along as I take you through what to expect when you are planning a visit to Fort Sumter!

History of Fort Sumter

The first thing to know before you go is the history! This post is divided into different headings, so if the history doesn’t interest you, you can skip ahead! To me, this is the best part about visiting.

The historical significance of Fort Sumter has become a name that will always remain in American history. This fort is located on a man-made island near Charleston Harbor in South Carolina. Exploring here is one of the best places to visit Charleston .

The construction of Fort Sumter started back in 1829, a time when the United States started investing heavily in fortifications after the War of 1812.

The fort was named after Thomas Sumter, a Revolutionary War hero and one of South Carolina’s famous sons. It was an engineering advancement of its time. It was built from thousands of tons of granite and bricks. With its five-sided layout and an interior large enough to house 650 defenders and 135 guns, it became a symbol of American military strength.

However, Fort Sumter is most famously known as the start of the American Civil War. On December 20, 1860, South Carolina became the first state to secede from the Union.

Five days later the federal troops stationed in Charleston moved into Fort Sumter. Which effectively turned it into a Union stronghold in Confederate territory and started the battle of Fort Sumter.

The tensions came to a head on April 12, 1861, when the Confederacy fired on the US garrison of Fort Sumter. These first shots marked the official beginning of the American Civil War. Which lasted four years and cost the lives of more than 620,000 Americans.

Planning Your Visit to Fort Sumter

When to Visit Fort Sumter in Charleston: The ideal time to explore Fort Sumter is from March to May or from September to November. This is when the weather is perfect to spend the day in the sun.

Duration of the Visit: A typical visit to Fort Sumter, including the ferry ride to and from the island, takes about 2-3 hours. The boat ride through the stunning Charleston Harbor is one of the things to do in Charleston!

Accessibility at Fort Sumter: Fort Sumter has accessibility for all visitors. There is a lift at the fort for those with mobility issues. However, it is still recommended to tell Fort Sumter Tours on the day of your visit for any specific accessibility needs.

Thinking is Fort Sumter worth a visit? The answer is always yes! The best times are during the spring and Fall in South Carolina !

Reservations and Tickets For Fort Sumter

Do you need a reservation for Fort Sumter? While it’s not mandatory to make a reservation for visiting Fort Sumter, it is highly advised. Buying your ferry tickets online in advance on the day of your visit will help ensure your place. Keep in mind that tour times vary depending on the season you are visiting.

Getting inside of Fort Sumter itself is free. But getting the ferry ride does have a small cost. Tickets for the ferry can be bought both at the departure locations as well as online.

But, due to the popularity of the Fort and the limited space of the ferry. It’s highly recommended to book your tickets in advance to ensure you get reservations for Fort Sumter on the right date.

In addition to the regular tours, you can also choose to add on extras like a sunset dinner cruise around Charleston Harbor.

Once you reach the fort, you’re free to explore the national monument and its museum at your own pace. If you plan to visit the nearby Fort Moultrie, keep in mind that there is a separate fee.

Tour Of Fort Sumter vs. Guided Tour

When planning your visit, one of the top questions is, can you go to Fort Sumter without a tour? And the answer is yes! You will have the choice between a Fort Sumter guided tour vs self-tour.

I have done both types of tours, and the best choice for you will depend on your personal preferences, how much time you have, and your interests.

Self-Guided Tour

A self-guided tour of Fort Sumter allows you to explore the fort at your own pace. You will receive a brochure when you arrive with a map of the site and information about the points of interest. This type of tour is great if you prefer a slower pace, want to stop for photos and enjoy the history without being rushed.

You can also learn more about the fort by visiting its museum, which has numerous exhibits about the Civil War and the fort’s history. There is plenty to learn and read while exploring Fort Sumter without a tour.

Guided Tour

On the other hand, booking tickets for Fort Sumter guided tour offers a more insider experience. You will be led by a knowledgeable guide, these tours provide very detailed information about Fort Sumter and its role in the Civil War.

The guides often share fascinating stories and lesser-known facts that will not be on the signs.

Also, guided tours typically follow a set route and schedule, which will help you see all the key points. However, they may not offer as much freedom to explore independently.

a great look at the fort from the inside. you can see the ocean full of boats in the back round and the green grass on the side.

Practical Tips For Touring Fort Sumter

When planning your visit there are several things to do at Fort Sumter to make the most of your trip.

Transportation

The only way to get to Fort Sumter is by boat. Ferries are operated by Fort Sumter Tours and actually depart from two locations. They are the Liberty Square in Charleston and Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant. It’s a good idea to secure your ferry tickets in advance as they do sell out fast.

Nearby Attractions

Your trip to Fort Sumter could be paired with other nearby attractions for a full day of exploration. For instance, Patriots Point, one of the ferry departure points, is also home to the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum. Here you can tour the USS Yorktown and other historic naval ships.

There are also plenty of beaches in Charleston nearby to explore!

Food Options

Unfortunately, there are no food services at Fort Sumter. But you are allowed to bring small coolers with snacks and drinks! There are water fountains available for refilling your reusable water bottles. You have to pack out all of your trash because there are no trash cans on the island.

You could always fill up at one of the best restaurants in Charleston before you head out on your tour of Fort Sumter.

Photography Tips

Fort Sumter offers so many great opportunities for amazing photography. If you have a wide-angle lens it would be the best lens to bring. It will help capture the entire fort and its surroundings! The lighting conditions are typically best in the early morning or late afternoon.

You will want to avoid the harsh mid-day sun if you can! If you head to the fort early in the morning you could always enjoy a good brunch in Charleston afterward!

Time Spent at Fort Sumter

When visiting Fort Sumter Charleston you may be wondering, how long should you spend at Fort Sumter? You will want to plan to carve out about 3 hours. This includes the ferry ride to and from the island. This gives you enough time for the 30-minute ferry ride each way and at least one hour on the island to explore.

Additional Tips for Visting Visiting Fort Sumter Charleston

  • Wear comfortable shoes! You will be doing a lot of walking around the fort.
  • Bring sun protection. This can be a hat, sunglasses, or sunscreen. This tip is crucial, especially during the summer months.
  • If you’re visiting with your children, consider picking up a Junior Ranger Packet at the Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center. It’s a great way for kids to learn about the site.

Navigating The History Of Fort Sumter

Setting Sail: Unraveling Fort Sumter’s Enigmatic Past

In the heart of Charleston Harbor, where the tides of history converge, a sentinel of time stands steadfast. As a dedicated explorer of the American South’s intricate narratives, I invite you to embark on an immersive journey through the ages, guided by the echoes of cannon fire and the resolute spirit of Fort Sumter. Join me as we traverse the path of remembrance and unveil the untold stories that lie within these hallowed walls.

A Lasting Echo: The Resonance of Fort Sumter’s Legacy

The saga of Fort Sumter begins with the ambition to secure the southern coastline against looming perils. Imposing brick and masonry took shape, standing tall against the backdrop of a burgeoning nation. Architectural ingenuity met strategic significance as the fort’s five-sided design ensured optimal coverage of Charleston Harbor. Yet, its formidable walls would witness an unfolding drama that would leave an indelible mark on the nation’s history.

In the early 1860s, the winds of change swept across the United States. South Carolina’s secession in December 1860, a culmination of years of mounting tensions, heralded the growing divide between the North and the South. Fort Sumter, positioned as a federal outpost within Charleston Harbor, became a focal point in the battle of ideologies. Confederate authorities, seeking to assert control over their territory, demanded the fort’s evacuation. But, the Union’s refusal to comply set the stage for a confrontation that would reverberate through time.

The Clash of Titans: The Siege of Fort Sumter

On the morning of April 12, 1861, Confederate batteries unleashed a torrent of cannon fire upon Fort Sumter, shattering the tranquility of Charleston Harbor and signaling the beginning of a bitter conflict. The federal garrison, under the command of Major Robert Anderson, found itself ensnared within the fort’s walls, its precarious position exacerbated by dwindling supplies.

The ensuing 34 hours witnessed a relentless barrage as Confederate forces, under the command of General Pierre G.T. Beauregard, subjected the fort to a withering bombardment. As the ramparts crumbled and fires raged within, Major Anderson made the agonizing decision to lower the United States flag. The echoes of his choice would ripple through history, heralding the start of the Civil War – a seismic upheaval that would forever reshape the American landscape.

A Chronicle of Renewal: Fort Sumter’s Enduring Spirit

Emerging from the crucible of war, Fort Sumter embarked on a remarkable journey of revival and reconciliation. The resilience of a nation found its reflection in the fort’s painstaking reconstruction – a testament to the power of unity in the face of adversity. In this rejuvenated form, Fort Sumter became more than a bastion of defense; it became a symbol of hope, a tangible reminder that even in the wake of strife, healing and unity are attainable.

Renowned engineer and architect Abbot H. Gillespie oversaw the fort’s reconstruction, incorporating advanced design elements that anticipated the evolving nature of warfare. The fortified walls, once scarred by battle, were reborn with a renewed purpose, standing as a testament to the nation’s commitment to its past and its future.

Purchased the TourPass online in advance of our trip. We selected a two day pass which included 3 premium selections and as many standard selections we could fit in.

Slick, slick, slick! The premium tours tell you how many spots are available which made it easy to know if you have time to choose or pick right away. Once selected you just go at the appointed time and tell the provider you are using tourpass. Your name is on their list! Worked flawlessly!

The Standard tours is just as simple. You go, tell them you have tourpass, you click a button, the provider gives you a code which you type in and click submitt. That's it! Enjoy!

This system works great and is a savings. Makes scheduling your vist EZPZ!

If you're on the fence, buy it!

Initially, I had some amount of distrust ordering on line. Worried that tickets would not come through, etc. Mathematically pre calculated if TourPass could offer savings compared to purchasing admission tickets individually. TourPass certainly did! To get the most out of our day, I planned an aggressive itinerary. We even brought sandwiches for lunch, so as not to waste a minute. We were able to get in 6 standard tours and one featured! Our second featured tour on Red Boat was cancelled. TourPass promptly refunded this amount on my credit card. No hassle, no worries! We did the1 day St Augustine pass. The featured Trolley Tour was outstanding, as were standard tours The Oldest Store and Jail. If I ever get to Savanah or Charleston will definitely go with TourPass. They did a great job of covering St Augustine’s highlights. Their app was user friendly and showed proximity of nearby attractions, saving steps and time. Everything was so easy. It’s not often one has such a positive experience. TourPass offers value and demonstrated integrity. You can trust them.

Our tour pass was worth the price. It's actually a money saver. We took the tour of St Augustine and got our bearings. It also helped us select the attractions. The drivers were pleasant, very helpful, and steeped in St Augustine history. Simply wonderful!

This made our Savannah trip so much easier to plan and to see all the attractions we wanted. It saved me over $100. In three days, we were able to visit all the places we wanted plus more! I would highly recommend buying this tour pass!

My husband and I went to St. Augustine for 2 days and wanted to see as much as possible. By using TourPass we were able to see the most popular attractions at a greatly reduced price. I would definitely use TourPass in other cities!

Purchasing a Tour Pass was the best decision for us! We saw many more attractions that we would have without it! So efficient too! Pay once and go, go, go! We would highly recommend it!

I purchased the Savannah tour pass for 3 days, I did not use them consecutively, as I was on town for 8 days. I chose to do the Hop on Hop off Tour on my first day to give me an overview of Savannah, I rode the trolleys for a total of two loops, guide offered a different perspective on the city. I took a walking tour, Brad was awesome, 1.5 hrs of wonderful history. I rode the Paddle boat, was a bit disappointed the wheel doesn't function. I also visited Fort Pulaski on my last day in Savannah, it was a wonderful experience. Those were the 4 featured options I used. I also used multiple options from the normal options, my 2 favorites were the Square Pops and the Jepsen Art Center. I cannot express how awesome it was to be able to enter a venue, have it paid for, and just enjoy. I will purchase the Savannah Pass when I return next year, it was well worth it's value. Now I am hopeful the Charleston, SC Pass, that it is just as terrific, as I am visiting in the Fall.

This was awesome value for the money, we were in both places the first week in March with another couple and it made planning things to do much easier and the value was outstanding. We figure we saved about $100 per couple.

We purchased the two day St. Augustine TourPass and found the pass well worth the money, providing us with access to museums and tours we might have passed on had we had to pay full price to see without the pass. Highly recommend purchasing, especially if in the area for several days.

So easy! Tour passed saved us over $200 dollars. Just scan your phone and enjoy. Great way to visit St. Augustine.

Tour Pass made our trip so easy to navigate. Easy check in at all our locations! Saved us a lot of time.

My contact at Tour Pass for both Savannah and Charleston was a gentleman named Keith. He went above and beyond to help me in setting up the events/days and was extremely patient with a non-technologically adept mature individual like me. He helped every time I called and was always charming while doing so which reduced my stress level. He also assisted when a day change was needed and on a refund for an event. It felt like my sister and I had a friend in the area!

The events were good selections and the information provided for each was appreciated. What would have added to the info for tourists would have been info about parking availability.

Loved it and saved money. St Augustine is such a fun city. Makes planning and visiting soooo much easier. I’ve purchased Tour Pass in all of their cities now (Charleston, Savannah and now St Augustine).

5 stars all the way! So many worthwhile attractions to choose from. Don’t even need to think twice or research more. Worth all the money for however many days of your visit. Plus so easy to use. Enough said! We will definitely be back and buy the Tour Pass all over again.

I got the tour pass for my family when we visited Charleston, SC in December. It was perfect since we weren't familiar with the city and this gave us ideas and suggestions of verified and validated things to do without having to do the research myself. We will definitely get the pass again.
