Two words " Presidential Suite" that's the way to go here. This suite has two floors 4 bedrooms and 7 and bathrooms, and each room having there own living room. Yup we were spoil for two days. Subic Bay Yacht Club is located on Rizal Highway Corner Burgos St. It's the first of many hotels you will see. At the time when we there (12/27/17) the hotel was being renovated. They were adding a casino on the second floor of the lobby. Cambusa Resturant on the lower level offer good breakfast buffet and the pool area is great for all ages. SERVICE: Excellent and very friendly. If you're looking for a place to stay in Subic Bay i do recommend staying here. The hotel is walking distance to many good restaurants and 5 to 10 minutes drive to Subic Bay Beach where you and rent jet skis.

I say 5 star because of the excellent service of the kitchen staff and buffet service , crew, chef and waiters. To start with, we came for breakfast when there's an ongoing wedding at the veranda. The breakfast buffet is prepared for the wedding guests and not for some ramdom , unexpected guests like us. The headwaiter accomodated us still with merely a 3 minute wait and the lady headwaitress profusely apologized for a very short wait. I perfectly understand the situation . I highly commend the crew for stepping up to the plate of unexpected guests on a very short notice. That is a world class Filipino hospitality for you. Very gracious, polite and extremely accomodating. There's a wide array of Filipino and American foods. The food is thoughtfully cooked, tasty and I will say it again world class. Desserts are awesomely delicious! They are giving us our money's worth. This place is a tourists hidden secret hideaway , a virtual treasure trove of deliciously made Filipino breakfast buffet. The hotel is nicely located in a yacht club ... It has a vantage view of the mountains with some foggy skyline, so pretty and picture perfect. The plank where the yacht docks have a mini esplanade feel to it, great for strolling around and reminiscing... This hotel is certainly worth your buck!

Cascade27

Hello all! I'm relatively new to the forum and a relatively new sailor/cruiser although I've driven ski boats all my life. It wasn't until later that I fell in love with sailing. It's a life changing experience and having the love of water already apart of me sailing has made me feel that much more connected to the sea. Last August 2019 I bought a 1980 27' Cascade and have spent many days sailing my local waters in the South Puget Sound ever since. Of course I will be sailing as much of the Puget Sound as possible and then this summer venturing up to the San Juan Islands. Eventually I would like to explore Victoria B.C. and the surrounding islands and inlets, then one day sail to Alaska and explore. I would love to share some pics and get any feedback on the boat. I know Cascade Yachts were built in Portland, OR and were the product of lead designer Robert Smith who took hull #1 and won his division in the Swiftsure Race. She handles well although has a rather narrow beam at 8.83ft. She's a Masthead Sloop. Fin w/spade rudder and displacement of 6,400 lbs. Any thoughts, feedback or anyone else with a Cascade would love to hear from you. Cheers!

Welcome. Nice looking boat.

Looks good to me. But that doesn’t matter. What counts is how you feel on her. The cabin looks like two max for a meal. I’m curious about how many you can sleep. We spend most of our time on our h27 in the cockpit. But it’s good to be able to retreat to the cabin in cold or foul weather. We’ve sailed twice in the San Juans, and a cozy cabin is a plus there. Good luck on her this summer!

cascade 27 sailboat review

Cascade Yachts were originally built in Portland, Oregon, and were the product of lead designer Robert Smith (former Sparkman’s and Stephens Yachts’ designer) and a team of local sailors. The company roots go back to 1954, and Cascade Yacht Works is still in business, now out of Warrenton, Oregon. They may have been the first to use the term bulletproof literally when describing their builds, for they actually shot their boats with firearms back in the day to prove their strength.

Cascade 27 specs

An example of a Cascade 27 boat is Skylark, a 1983 model currently for sale. It is decked out with a slightly wider than standard cabin house and a Universal M2-12, 11-horsepower diesel engine. The owners allegedly took Skylark to Hawaii and back, and a custom trailer makes the Sea of Cortez and inland waters all that more accessible.

If you’re on the market for a reliable sailboat that won’t break the bank, the Cascade 27 is a statement of Cascadian pride. Skylark is currently for sale with the Port Townsend Boat Company and listed at $16,500.

Privacy Overview

Review of cascade 27.

Basic specs..

The Cascade 27 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated. As the surface of a fin type keel is just a fraction of the total wet surface, the difference between an iron keel and a lead keel can in reality be ignored for cruising yachts.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.37 - 1.47 meter (4.49 - 4.79 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Cascade 27 is 1.90, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.2 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Cascade 27 is about 118 kg/cm, alternatively 661 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 118 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 661 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 20m 2 (215 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

1980 Cascade 27

  • Description

Seller's Description

The Classic 1980 Cascade 27 was originally built in Portland, Oregon and encompasses a piece of Northwest History. Cascade Yachts was founded in 1954 by a group of sailors that were experimenting with fiberglass hull construction.

The 27 foot Cascade has a lot of upgrades that include all new rigging along with a new custom fitted Pineapple Main Sail. You’ll enjoy the large aft cockpit while you take control of the beautiful pilot wheel that includes ample seating for family and friends.

Set up for single-handled sailing, the winches, lines, main sheet and halyards are easily accessed from the cockpit.

The cabin has room to relax with comfortable seating and a small galley and head. The Cascade is the perfect size for daily cruising or those long bucket list adventures.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Cascade 29 - Good deal/Bad deal?

cascade 27 sailboat review

  • Add to quote

Alright, I'm going to go and look at a boat this weekend: A Cascade 29. I'll link to the craigslist ad (which has a link to some photos), and I'll post the e-mail I got from the owner. What do you folks think? Is it a fair price? Is it a fair boat? My main concerns are construction quality and engine - what would yours be? My story is on another post, but here's the summary. I need a boat I can live on, take my SO out for the weekend with, and sail single-handed (in roughly that order). It doesn't need to be fancy, but it will be my home and I don't want to live in a hovel. I'm on a tight budget and have limited free time, but am a skilled carpenter. I won't buy a full project, but expect to do a certain amount of start-up work. I live in Victoria, BC, and will be cruising mostly around the Salish Sea, but would like to be able to circumnavigate Vancouver Island. For the price he's asking I would have a reasonable amount of slosh for upgrades, but obviously never enough (ain't that always the way of it ...). Ad: 29' cruising sloop photo album (password is "spring"): Shaw Photo Share E-mail the owner sent me: "Hi Joel, Its a Cascade 29, built in bullet proof glass in a hand layup process in 1964. (It really is bullet proof. The Cascade Yacht Constructors team fired a 45 calibre round into one of their hulls at point blank range back in the day. Nothing happened!) Deck and cabin were redone in 2005 in my backyard with the help of a Crescent Beach ship builder at $25 an hour. Cabin is all 3/4 inch mahogany. Deck is 1/2 inch mahogany plywood with glass over. Poured $25 thou in, got 8 years of cruising out, averaging 3 weeks a year. I took the original Palmer gas engine out, put in a diesel, took that out 3 years ago and hung the outboard on the back. Gained a ton of space, the cabin smells sweet, boat handles well under power in calmer conditions. Not meant to be used as a motor sailer. Maintenance records are just one big file. Come on over this weekend. Its not in Sidney. Its on my mooring buoy at Horton Bay. I'll take you out and about with my friends who arrive tomorrow. You might have to help dress her up. All her cushions and gear have been in dry storage all winter. If you're thinking this through, at what place would you consider joining us and taking the boat away? We REALLY want to get to the Broughtons this year. I taught up there for 10 years, and have never gotten back on my own sailboat. Family emergencies always pulled us back before we got past Quadra. Have you looked at the pictures? I was on her today. Rebedded a couple of lifeline stanchions, cleaned the bilge. Tomorrow, I'm glassing over some more of the mahogany at the roof line. Kept her dry in a tent all year so I could do this. That'll nail a couple of leaks from the bow end of the cabin. Unfortunately, the beauty of the mahogany wood cabin will become just another glass job. Check out Cascade Yachts Cheers, Al"

cascade 27 sailboat review

Cascades are well known in this region and many have done serious offshore passages. A caution, though, as many were kit boats and so the fit and finish will vary (a good craftsman might produce something better than 'factory', but unfortunately a poor one will take shortcuts with parts, materials, etc. some of which will not be immediately apparent) She won't be the spriteliest performer in our summer light airs, I reckon, but might be a decent inexpensive boat for your needs. Looks a bit cramped, too, but liveable. The windlass is a bonus, though I wonder how the O/B keeps up with the batteries. A good survey should let you know if this is a 'good one'....

To each their own...but I think you can get into a more modern 30' like a Tartan 30 for this type of money, and have a lot more room, better sailing, and a proper auxhiliary inboard that would serve all your needs better, 'cepting perhaps rounding Cape Horn should that be a need.

I went across and looked at her today. I will not be making an offer. This one was completely rebuilt by the current owner, to an acceptable but not exceptional degree of care. The entire boat would require a thorough scrubbing and re-painting, and most of the interior would require re-finishing (including the building over covers and cabinets and such). The wiring and plumbing were both functional but not impressive or particularly fail-safe, and since I'm least competent at fixing those, they rank highest (along with the engine) on my priorities list. I'd rather have stuff that I trust will work for a while, rather than stuff that I'll have to tinker with every other week. However, it was a very pleasant trip out to the island where it's moored, and the owners fed me a delicious lunch of crab trapped that morning. Hard to complain about that! As SailingFool states, I can probably get a much better (possibly more modern) boat for that money. Live and learn.

Bought a 27' Cascade about a month ago and have been out nearly every night. I sail the South Puget Sound in Washington State and was wondering anyone's thoughts and opinions on these Cascades. It takes into consideration "reported" sail area, displacement and length at waterline. The higher the number the faster speed prediction for the boat. In most Cascade 29s the keel is flanged just like my Cascade 42. That means that a haul out is necessary to replace the bolts. The bolts are more than likely steel to match the keel but you can take a magnet to them to see. They are not hard to change and if the yard you are in will allow you to grind the glass covering the heads then shouldn't be hard to remove.

Subic Bay Yacht Club + the Taste of the North

I actually didn’t expect I’d have a luxurious stay here, but thanks Subic Bay Yacht Club and What To Eat PH for inviting me to a restful and tasty weekend!  Subic Bay Yacht Club is one of those vacay places I never imagined I’d stay at because they used to accept only their guest members (who are more fortunate than us, by the way), but hey, they just opened their gates to the public and I’m super thankful I got to experience not only the comfy stay but their little yet grand feast they call The Taste of the North, but that’s a story for later, so in let’s talk first about the hotel and what I really loved about it.

Hey there! My name’s May and you can view more about me  here .  I travel a lot for both work and leisure. Thanks to being an auditor and a content creator and, of course, to my love for travel, I barely feel I’m actually at work when traveling. And if  I’m actually off work, I usually am with friends or family, discovering places and trying out new food. I’m juggling three jobs – the two mentioned + being a single mom. You think it’s easy? Of course not! But what glues me together is my passion and love for these three. More about my story  here .

I love sharing what I know and how I do things, so if you haven’t read these yet, visit the following pages to view:

subic bay yacht club presidential suite

Subic Bay is well known as a natural harbor usually enjoyed by recreation and bay adventures such as yacht sailing. Not everyone are aware Subic Bay Yacht Club is open to the public as we think the same is members-exclusive spot until now. Well, just a few years back, SBYC opened its doors to anyone who wishes to have a luxurious getaway and experience its beauty, members or not.

SBYC is located at Subic (obviously), Zambales which is known as one of the former US military facilities outside of the US mainland a.k.a. Subic Bay Naval Base. Also, Subic is known as a docking station of luxurious yachts and hang out to yacht owners from different parts of the world.

August 2020 update: Due to the ongoing outbreak of COVID19, Subic Bay Yacht Club is temporarily closing its doors from all guests for now, to keep us safe and comply with ECQ/GCQ guidelines. For more timely updates, visit their Facebook page, Subic Bay Yacht Club Inc. .

About Subic Bay Yacht Club

Located north west of Manila, the Club is set with Zambales Mountain range on the eastern part and the tranquil Subic Bay that opens to the South China Sea on the west.  Subic Bay Yacht Club safely sits along Rizal Highway inside Subic Bay Freeport. They offer not only a place to stay, but also yacht and boat rental, and yacht cruise packages. They also boast their home restaurant, Cambusa Bistro, which hosts the Taste of the North Feast as I mentioned earlier.

Established in 1997, SBYC is well-known for its top-of-the-line berths and facilities that allow for a secure and environmentally friendly sailing. The club has around 300 berths that can accommodate 25-ft to 178-ft long watercraft.

◘   Beautiful location . It’s located along Subic Bay so how else would you expect the beauty it offers? Except during the rainy season when the waters look a little bit darker, the bay looks very stunning while it features the colors of the sky at any time.  ◘  Elegant hotel.  I personally felt I was a sailor stay inside a Titanic-like hotel. From the big and pretty staircase, to the narrow halls, it really seemed like I was inside a huge ship. ◘ Fabulous staff. To be honest we were there as partners to feature Taste of the North, but as we observed how the staff treated other guests, and note it’s open to members and non-members, they treat everyone as is they’re all very important guests and I say that’s very important when you do hospitality. ◘ Luxurious ambiance. Since SBYC is known with its premium offers, expect a classy ambiance. I mean, again, obvs.

Our Subic Bay Yacht Club Experience

We came on a rainy day so I wasn’t expecting to enjoy the pool or just touring around the area. But despite wanting to just lie down and chill, we also liked walking in the rain and take wonderful pictures.

My favorite part of the club (aside from our room and the balcony) was the pool side where I can write on my laptop while enjoying the view of this side of the bay. What made it even more perfect was I can actually order myself a cup of hot coffee and just relax and do my job there.

We were a group of five and SBYC was sooo generous to check us in to two beautiful and cozy rooms. Both are really spacious we could really fit in one room with extra mattresses. Our first room was a nice corner suite where we loved hanging out in and talk about our day. There is a sofa bed as well in the living/welcome area so someone in the group can chill there. It also has a mini kitchen which is very convenient for a small family getaway. The other room is a classy executive room with twin beds where Aina and I stayed. Both rooms have their own pretty comfort rooms and Jacuzzi tub.

Rooms are equipped with keycard system and your stuff could be protected by a safety deposit box. There also is a minibar and coffee and tea set up. Wifi connection is good, in case you’re wondering. We were able to work within the vicinity and network signals are also great.

◘  Pool. Situated on 2,500sqm space are 5 large swimming pool sections: Waterslides, Children’s pool, Lap pool, Pool bar, and the Main pool. Swimmers and sunbathers may enjoy the good view of the harbor and edge covered with a white sandy beach. ◘   Gym. There is a gym are where you can practice your body strength and stamina, while the spa was on the works to serve the guests. ◘   Boathouse. The boathouse, as far as I can remember is exclusive for members only. OMG correct me if I’m wrong. Here they can conduct meetings, rent a larger function room, or just hang out with their co-members. ◘ Basketball, Tennis Courts, and Beach Volleyball  are also present for the sporty guests. ◘ Children’s Playground is there as well for the kids to enjoy.

Dining: Taste of the North

We arrived later than expected, but thankfully, we still had few hours to enjoy the Mongolian Lunch Buffet in the Cambusa Bistro. It’s technically served as a make-your-own Mongolian dish where we can choose from variants of  veggies, meat, and sauces. I like mine hot and spicy, so I just followed the recipe for the same but tweaked to a little bit more spicy and I super loooooved it. One of the things I really, really loved about SBYC.

In the same restaurant, Taste of the North happened the next day. It;s a food fest hosted by Subic Bay Yacht Club highlighting our favorite dishes from the Northern region. All thanks to Chef Topher Dumo , who definitely made the feast super tasty and worth it!

img_20190825_111226

My favortie, of course, is the famous Ilocos empanada which most of the guests really loved as well I had to wait for minutes for the refill. Kudos to Chef and team for not letting us wait longer for the favorites!

The dishes were arranged in stations sitting around the Cambusa Bistro so it’s perfectly convenient to all guests to roam around and choose their picks. The first station were varieties of appetizers, the second features variants of soup and Pinoy fried rice. The next one of course offers the main dish and different kinds of North faves such as daing, kare kare, pinakbet, calderata, bagnet  and more.

In one corner are the desserts were unique ice cream flavors are served. Fruits and sweet delicacies were also there to satisfy our cravings for more sweets.

img_20190825_120450

i’m honestly not sure I will get the chance to be invited again as part of the media next time, but if I hear about the same feast again, I sure will go with my family as regular guests! Not only the hotel and the club, I also loooooved the food Chef Topher and his team worked really hard for. I mean, just imaging how much effort they gave to serve huge number of guests for an afternoon feast without ruining the quality of Northern cuisine! Salute to all Chef who really do their best to make our tummies and hearts soooo full!
