The Burgess guide to Palma International Boat Show

Your guide to the Palma International Boat Show

The Palma show kicks off the Mediterranean yacht show calendar

Organised by the Business Innovation Institute of the Balearic Islands, the Palma International Boat Show draws the crowds for its location as much as the yachts. Palma de Mallorca is one of the most visited islands in Europe, prized for its delectable tapas, luxury lifestyle and blended culture. The boat show brings together boatbuilders, nautical equipment suppliers, toys and accessories manufacturers and a host of international brands from the yachting industry.

What is the Palma International Boat Show?

Hosted at Marina Moll Vell, the show is right next to Palma's picturesque old town

Widely considered to be the inaugural event of the Mediterranean nautical season, the Palma International Boat Show is a four-day event where motor yachts, sailing yachts, accessories suppliers and everything else in between gather. Over 600 mega yachts sized 24m+ from the international brokerage and charter market are on display in the Superyacht Village showcasing anything from the latest advancements in sail design to next-level marine electronics.

Where can I get tickets?

Our Brokerage team will be on hand for yacht tours and to answer any questions you may have

Tickets for the event can be bought online in advance at the official show website. Flexible in its arrangements, visitors can purchase day tickets or a four-day pass which offers a small discount. There is no minimum age for entry, but masks remain a requirement.

When is the Palma International Boat Show?

Blue skies and a warm ocean breeze, Palma is always a popular show

The 2023 Palma International Boat Show will take place between 27-30 April, from 10.00 until 20.00 each day. It’s held during the summertime and sailing regatta season, and there are often many siestas and celebrations that visitors can take part in that offer an authentic slice of Balearic life.

Where is the Palma International Boat Show?

The Cathedral of Santa Maria, or Le Seu for short, provides a picturesque background for the show

Palma, the island of Majorca’s capital city, is a major seaport forming part of the Balearic Islands archipelago. It’s famed for La Seu, a vast cathedral built on a previous mosque, which was built atop an original Christian church. Decorating Palma’s seaside promenade with a litany of superyachts, the Palma International Boat Show takes place in Marina Moll Vell, one of three superyacht marinas in the area. It’s strategically placed at the edge of Palma Old Town, virtually opposite the cathedral, and has 80 berths up to 45m in length and a draught of 5m.

What else can I do near the Palma International Boat Show?

Just to the west of Le Seu is the Royal Palace of La Almudaina

Yacht owners and visitors looking to enjoy Palma’s Balearic beats can drink in the many Gothic landmarks that hark back to the 13th century, as well as a plethora of blended architecture from the city’s Roman, Byzantine and Muslim periods. These include the Almudaina, a Moorish-style Arab fortress converted to a royal residence, and west of the city, hilltop Bellver Castle is a medieval fortress with a distinctive circular shape.

Visit Llotja de Palma

Twisted columns support a vaulted ceiling inside the Llotja de Palma

Situated on Carrier de la Llotja next to the waterfront and not far from the Plaça de la Drassana, the Llotja de Palma is a 15th-century guild building recognised by its twin octagonal towers and an angel over the door. The Gothic landmark appears half-castle, half-church, but was designed by architect Guillem Sagrera as the city's exchange at the height of Mallorca’s maritime history. It was later used for storage during the War of Independence and a fine art gallery. Today, it is a cultural centre, hosting temporary exhibitions.

Explore Catedral-Basílica de Santa María de Mallorca

The Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma, more commonly referred to as La Seu, is a Gothic Roman Catholic cathedral. Built from golden sandstone it’s perched high on Palma's old city walls. The picturesque town of Santa Maria del Cami, known by the locals as just Santa Maria, sits in Majorca's central flat plain, in one of the island's most prominent wine growing regions. La Seu is the most emblematic building in Palma, and a popular meeting point.

Take time out in Plaça Major

At the heart of the city, the Plaça Major bustles with markets, bars and eateries

As Palma’s main square (though rectangular in shape), the Plaça Major is a natural hub of socialising. The large, longitudinal square is built on the site of the San Felipe Nerí Convent and is surrounded by traditional yellow buildings with green shutters. It enjoys frequent outdoor craft markets, and its many shops and cafes make the ideal place to while away a few hours enjoying the local fare and quaffing chilled rose.

Palma International Boat Show sailing yachts 2023

Palma International Boat Show kicks off the Mediterranean season

The Mediterranean season is officially underway with the season-opening Palma International Boat Show (PIBS) all wrapped up in Mallorca.

Set in Marina Moll Vell against the backdrop of the Santa Maria cathedral, the exhibition took over the waterfront for four days on the last weekend of April, welcoming more than 600 boats of all sizes, 271 exhibitors and 32,000 visitors to the city.

Organised by IDI and BYBA, The Palma International Boat Show hosted the Palma Superyacht Village as part of its showcase for the second year running, following a successful merger between the Palma International Boat Show and Palma Superyacht Show. The result was a new super event with a fairground of more than 81,000 square metres, establishing the show as a vital event in the industry calendar, bringing together brokers, buyers, shipyards and suppliers from the superyacht segment and beyond.

Arne Ploch, managing director of the Palma Superyacht Village, said that the show presented a golden opportunity for prospective owners. ''Having PIBS in the springtime is a great opportunity for buyers, they can potentially sign a contract right after the show in May and a month later be out on the water fully enjoying the Mediterranean season aboard their new vessel, that's a unique and very alluring prospect."

The city itself, with its numerous regattas, is considered one of the sailing capitals of the world and this is reflected in the show’s in-water display, with a fleet of pedigree performance vessels, classic schooners and world cruisers for sale and charter. “The show remains one of the best opportunities in the spring season to display yachts for sale and offers an excellent window for the sailing yacht market,” says sales broker Mael Fiolet of Camper & Nicholsons. “This event is the only real yacht show that we have in the Mediterranean in the spring and offers clients the opportunity to come to this vibrant island for a few days where they can study their next purchase for the season but also enjoy some quality time in the island.”

But that’s not to say that there isn’t plenty to appeal to power purists too. The 49.9-metre Mangusta 165 AAA was the largest vessel on display this year, while the newly listed NQEA explorer Flying Manta and its Airbus H130 helicopter was the star of the show.

According to the organisers, 96 per cent of participants have expressed interest in exhibiting next year and more than 20 per cent ask for more space, reconfirming the show as a staple event on the yachting calendar. Elsewhere, brokers acknowledge greater footfall, but also more qualified visitors in the 39th edition of the show.

New for this year as part of the Palma Superyacht Village was the Innovation Corner, organised by Yachting Ventures with support from BYBA. Twelve yachting startups showcased their new products and services with many specialising in digitalisation tools such as Floatist, Crewdentials, LJ eLogbooks, Mariners Log, Wolfgang Pro, SEAZONE. Others focused on promoting green technologies including HY-Plug, RAD Propulsion, EPHYRA, Swiss Ocean Tech and BatteryCheck. Also within the dock-side exhibition was a separate area dedicated to refit and repair, which celebrated the Balearic Islands as a key Mediterranean refit hub.

On the penultimate day of the show, BOAT International’ s sister magazine Dockwalk hosted a Happy Hour at the Tast Out Bar on-site, offering captains and crew drinks and canapés, while some attending yachts such as M/Y Moonraker and S/Y Miss Silver welcomed guests aboard for sundowners of their own that continued long into the evening.

The show concluded with a ceremonial blast of the horns that could be heard all along the palm-lined Paseo Maritimo, and the floating bridge was opened with boats leaving to begin their summer seasons. Next year the show is expected to be bigger than ever as the show celebrates its 40th anniversary.

PIBS preview

Palma international boat show (pibs) and the superyacht village (psv) return to the centre of palma de mallorca 27th - 30th april….

Back for a bigger than ever year, the Palma International Boat Show (PIBS) and The Superyacht Village (PSV) herald the beginning of the 2023 summer season in style over four days at Moll Vell in the centre of Palma de Mallorca 27th - 30th April. The 2022 show attracted more than 32,000 people and brought together 276 companies, this year record numbers are expected to descend on the largest of the Balearic Islands, in celebration of all things nautical.

''The setting for PIBS is spectacular'' says Arne Ploch, Managing Director of the Palma Superyacht Village. ''In the heart of beautiful Palma, surrounded by amenities, luxury hotels and world-class restaurants, in the springtime sun, clients are flying in from all over Europe and further afield, it's a really enjoyable time and a great way to start the summer.''

Clients are not only flying in to enjoy the boat show atmosphere, but they are also coming ready to buy, Ploch explains. ''Having PIBS in the springtime is a great opportunity for buyers, they can potentially sign a contract right after the show in May and a month later be out on the water fully enjoying the Mediterranean season aboard their new vessel, that's a unique and very alluring prospect. Palma Superyacht Village, a show organized by the Balearic Yachts Brokers Association for the industry is the perfect platform to introduce newcomers to yachting as well as cover all services an experienced owner is looking for.”

Palma also has the distinction of being one of the sailing yacht capitals of the world. A strong pedigree of not only sailing yachts but also motor yachts from 24-55m+ will be found at PSV in-water display, for sale and charter. In 2023 there are more yachts available to charter at the Superyacht Village than ever before, as the brokerages respond to an ever-growing client base wishing to spend time on the water.

PSV is also an important date on the B2B calendar, as the professional yachting industry converges in Palma to meet, network, collaborate and exchange ideas. The ever-popular Re-fit & Repair area and the raft of shoreside exhibitors will feature both local and international companies and this year is sponsored by new brand partner Estrella Galicia.

Also new to the Superyacht Village is the Innovation Corner in collaboration with leisure marine entrepreneurial community hub Yachting Ventures. The Innovation Corner will provide a space for nautical startups to showcase new technologies, and to promote dialogue between young companies and the wider yachting industry.

"We are thrilled to announce that the Innovation Corner, a new initiative in collaboration with Yachting Ventures and the Palma Superyacht Village, featured at the 2023 edition of the Palma Boat Show," continues Ploch. "As an island, we understand the tremendous contribution of the yachting industry to our economy and acknowledge the significance of remaining innovative. We are eager to meet the selected start-ups participating in the Innovation Corner and offer them the opportunity to showcase their products and services to the attendees of PIBS this year."

Commenting further on the partnership, Gabbi Richardson, founder of Yachting Ventures adds, "We're delighted to offer startups the opportunity to showcase their solutions to the industry by participating in the inaugural Innovation Corner at PIBS. There's always a real buzz at this show, and I grew up in Mallorca so the event is personally one of my favourites on the yachting calendar. It signifies the start of summer in the Mediterranean, and it is especially important because it inclusively spans all sizes of yachts and watercraft.''

The yachts are not the only attraction at The Superyacht Village, food enthusiasts will be delighted by Mallorca resident and Michelin-starred chef Mark Fosh and his team who once again will bring the Fosh Lounge to the Superyacht Village for delectable bites and refreshments in a luxurious setting, this year brought to life in collaboration with Bentley Barcelona.

Gourmets will also love sampling the offerings from Tast Out catering, who will provide their take on local cuisine during the show via their first-class catering services to exhibitors and boats.

Whether you are coming to Palma to do a little yacht shopping, meet with industry colleagues and friends, discover new technologies and innovations or sit back glass of rosé in hand and soak up the atmosphere of all things nautical in one of the Mediterranean's most spectacular destinations the place is to be is Palma International Boat Show and The Superyacht Village, Moll Vell, Palma de Mallorca this month 27th - 30th April.

What a Day at Palma Boat Show 2021 Looks Like

' src=

Palma Boat Show 2021: We flew over to Palma de Mallorca to check out one of the first-ever yacht shows since lockdown.

The  Palma Superyacht Show  took place between 3rd – 6th June in Marina Moll Vell, in the heart of Palma de Mallorca. We can’t think of a better location to welcome in the 2021 Mediterranean yachting season than Spain’s sunny Balearic Islands.

It has been a long time between yacht shows on the continent – the last time a harmony of yacht horns rang out to celebrate the end of a successful show was at Monaco in September 2019!

Mallorca is a destination easily accessed from much of Europe making it an easy area for travel. The organisers and exhibitors are took the utmost care and necessary precautions to ensure this open-air event was both an enjoyable and safe experience for everyone in attendance.

The Palma Boat Show 2021 was organised by the Institute for Business Innovation (IDI), headed by the Vice-Presidency and Regional Ministry of Energy Transition, Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory, as well by the Balearic Yacht Brokers Association (BYBA).

With 270 exhibitors, over 600 yachts on display of which 300 were afloat and more than 80,000 square meters of exhibition ground. this year’s Palma Boat Show was bigger and better than ever.

All the world’s market leaders were represented in Palma, showing off new products and services. The Palms International Boat Show had direct presentations from many shipyards who chose this event as their return to international trading fairs after the pandemic and who were helping to consolidate Palma as the preferred destination for recreational boating and the professional nautical industry.

The opportunity to finally step back on board the finest selection of yachts for sale and charter, combined with Palma’s sunny days and mild nights, was guaranteed to create an electric atmosphere.
