Brand History

Resourceful, ingenious, and committed to time-honored traditions of excellence, the history of the Cheoy Lee is as varied and fascinating as the country from which we come. Cheoy Lee dates back to a humble beginning in 1870 at a building and repair yard for steam-powered craft at Po Tung Point in Shanghai. By the mid-1960’s, 90% of Cheoy Lee production was pleasure craft, primarily for the American market, although the commercial craft division of Cheoy Lee also continued to grow. Cheoy Lee continues to allow the balance of commercial and yacht production to follow market demand, adding considerable stability to the company as a whole.

Constantly improving product, Cheoy Lee advanced fiberglass technology to become a forerunner in the marine use of GRP/foam sandwich construction. In 1977 Cheoy Lee built the world's largest molded GRP yacht of its time, the 130' Motorsailer Shango II, and by 1979 the first all foam cored production motoryacht came on line; the Cheoy Lee 48’ Sport Yacht. This model went on to break through in the commercial sector as well, seeing service as a series of patrol boats in Australia, technologically superior and clearly outperforming rival builders at the time.

Cheoy Lee continues to be managed by members of the Lo family. The shipyard's new and sophisticated production facility on the Pearl River in Southern China is now the powerhouse of Cheoy Lee production. And as for almost a century, Cheoy Lee maintains a smaller yard and head office for operations on the Kowloon peninsula in Hong Kong.

When familiar with the yacht market, one would most definitely have heard of the fine build, Cheoy Lee, but there are many interesting facts that may not have come up when walking the docks at the many boat shows about this luxury builder. At present, Cheoy Lee, a world-renowned builder of luxury yachts and super yachts up to 60 meters, are based in Doumen in Southern China with a second shipyard in the Howloon Peninsula in Hong Kong.

How did it all begin and where? Travel back in time to the year 1870 and imagine stepping into the magical Shanghai and you’ll find Cheoy Lee’s first shipyard. A yacht wasn’t the focus here though… this yard was building and repairing steam-powered vessels. The founding family (still the same family today) came much later in 1936 and relocated the shipyard to Hong Kong where power cargo vessels were birthed with the purpose of out-running the Japanese blockade. It wasn’t until the mid-1950s, that anything that resembled a sailing or motor yacht was created there but what a welcome surprise was had by all when they showed their first teak sailing and motor yachts. They brought aboard top naval architects for this feat. And a successful one it was at that as it grew so that luxury yachts grew to be approximately 90 percent of the shipyard’s production.

The commercial sect didn’t suffer from a loss as Cheoy Lee continued to build large commercial vessels and to this day is still pumping them out too! The focus continued to remain on this trail-blazing manufacturer come the 1960s and 70s when Cheoy Lee won the applause of the yachting industry by pioneering the use of GRP construction technology. With that, in 1977, they launched the motorsailer Shango II – the largest composite yacht of it’s time measuring in at, then, a whopping 39.62 meters. Then came another surprise to the yachting corner of the world —the first all-foam-cored production yacht named the Cheoy Lee 48’ Sport Yacht!

The year 1999, Cheoy Lee continued to shine a bright light with a new facility that would allow them the fabulous ability to build luxury yachts and ships up to 60 meters in length. Their choice to base this revolutionary shipyard was on the Pearl River in Doumen.

Marco Polo won the attention of many In 2007 as Cheoy Lee’s 44.8-meter oceangoing Explorer Yacht worked up by Ron Holland and featuring completely new power – a single Caterpillar diesel engine combined with a Schottel vectoring bow thruster. Her maximum speed clocked in at 14.5 knots. With impressive fuel efficiency and a fabulous range of 6,000 nautical miles at 10.5 knots. Mazu, was born after Marco Polo and was all the rage with its custom interior.

Cheoy Lee became a true industry pioneer in the use of fibreglass for the construction of yachts, and the vessels that it produces today are among the most cutting edge, stylish and luxurious yachts launched anywhere in the world.

More About Cheoy Lee Yachts

The brainchild of the Lo family, Cheoy Lee was founded in Shanghai in 1870 to produce a range of boats and ships for local commercial operators. Some years later in 1936 the company relocated to British Hong Kong and began to manufacture sail powered cargo vessels, a line of work that continued all the way through World War II. Yet after the war had ended, and a new world of opportunity had opened up, Cheoy Lee decided to pivot towards the luxury yacht market, specialising in teak-framed sailing and motor yachts. Within a decade this line of work accounted for up to 90% of the firm’s revenue, and though the firm also constructs ferries and tugboats, to this day Cheoy Lee is first and foremost known as a builder of yachts.

It was in the late 1960s, however, that Cheoy Lee began to outstrip its competitors, becoming one of the first shipyards in the world to utilize GRP fiberglass and foam sandwich construction in its revolutionary yachts. By 1977, the company was building the world’s largest fiberglass vessels, such as the 130-foot motoryacht Shango II. A couple of years later and the world’s first all-foam-cored yacht, the Cheoy Lee 48’ Sport Yacht, was launched at the yard. Fast forward to the 1990s, and Cheoy Lee’s operations were so successful that an expansion was required. So the firm upped sticks from its old Penny Bay, Hong Kong yard and shifted their facility a few dozen miles away to Doumen, China, where today more than 800 professionals craft some of the world’s most advanced luxury yachts for the global market.

The consensus of industry insiders is that Cheoy Lee’s current Doumen shipyard is among the most impressive on the planet. The factory is one of the few in the world to specialize in steel, aluminum and composite construction, often combining these materials in their projects. Heavy duty equipment such as a 1,000 ton railway lift, 150-ton Travelift, dry docks and multiple fabrication halls complement precise engineering facilities such as 5-axis CNC cutters, NC water bath plasma cutters and Prop Scan systems to produce Cheoy Lee’s cutting edge semi-custom yachts.

Some of the company’s most celebrated yachts down the years have captured the hearts of owners and onlookers alike. Perhaps the most famous yacht to be completed by Cheoy Lee in recent years was the TransOcean Explorer Marco Polo, a 147-foot steel vessel that realized the firm’s ambition to combine Asian engineering standards with European style and luxury. Designed by Kasia Milewska and Ron Holland Design, and boasting KCA interiors, the yacht was crowned the winner of the 2008 ShowBoats International “Best New Series over 40 meters”. Cheoy Lee’s latest venture in yacht building is an exciting collaboration with American naval architect Jon Overing to produce a new line of Explorer yachts ranging from 107 to 132 feet in length. Built of composite steel and aluminum, these yachts are designed with a deeper draft, free flowing corridor space from bow to stern, a multi-tiered deck system with expansive leisure space and all-weather cruising.

Sleek and bold, this ergonomic 118-foot-long yacht is built to maximize interior space across its three deck spaces so that buyers can customize to their heart’s content. Boasting naval architecture from Overing Yacht Designs and interior finishes from Westhoff Interiors, the yacht’s impressive aerodynamic design is one of the most iconic that Cheoy Lee has on offer. Downstairs state rooms accommodate up to 10 guests, while separate sleeping quarters have space for a crew of 8. Powered by dual CAT C32 engines for a top speed of 26 knots and an extensive cruising range, the yacht also benefits from TRAC STAR of Seakeeper stabilization systems for a smooth ride.

Cheoy Lee 50 Sportfisherman

Along with Cheoy Lee’s contemporary range of luxury yachts, the firm has in the past produced smaller sporting yachts for fishing and leisure enthusiasts. The Cheoy Lee 50 Sportfisherman is one such example, produced from the late 1980s to the early 1990s. This yacht measures almost 51 feet in length and features a tournament style raised flybridge and spacious aft deck with plenty of storage and space to unspool those fishing lines. Three lower staterooms and all the necessary amenities for overnight trips make this yacht a great option for longer, multi-day trips to the world’s most well-stocked fishing grounds. A hull and superstructure built with Airex coring, and a total displacement weight of only 36,000 pounds means this yacht is superbly lightweight yet reassuringly durable. Zipping along at a top speeds of around 30 knots, dedicated fishers and anglers will be delighted with this practical and nimble vessel.

Cheoy Lee Unveils New Explorer and Tradition Yacht Series

Designed by an American naval architecture firm for American owners,  these expedition and cruising motor yachts from 107’ to 132’ combine up-to-date styling and technology with over 150 years of bluewater boat-building experience.

Cheoy Lee Yachts , the luxury yacht division of leading international ship builder Cheoy Lee Shipyards, is proud to announce its new Explorer and Tradition lines. Designed by U.S. naval architecture firm Overing Yacht Designs to suit the needs and desires of American clients, Cheoy Lee’s Tradition and Explorer series yachts are constructed using advanced technology combined with the more than 150 years of traditional artisanship. Cheoy Lee has collaborated with Sylvia Bolton Design of Seattle to create fresh and comfortable interior designs for many of these new motor yachts.

The new Cheoy Lee Explorer series yachts are rugged expedition vessels built with full-displacement, steel hulls with round bilges, bulbous bows, commercial-level equipment, and long-range fuel capacities. Unique features include a tank deck that crew can use to transit the vessel from bow to stern. Each Explorer model is designed to be the perfect platform for any oceangoing adventure its owners can imagine. Complementing its highly practical work areas are spacious and luxurious owner and guest accommodations featuring a large flybridge lounge and an aft beach club that sustains the connection between the owner and the sea.

“What really defines the Cheoy Lee Explorer series is what they are capable of doing. Built to full class standards – Lloyd’s, RMI Yacht Code or the equivalent – they are true world-cruising yachts,” said Jon Overing, owner, Overing Yacht Designs.

The Cheoy Lee Yachts Explorer line includes the following models:

• 107 Explorer . Cheoy Lee Hull No. 5200 currently in build with an estimated delivery date of late summer 2022. Accommodating 10 guests and 6 to 8 crew, this five-stateroom yacht features a master suite on the bridge deck for sweeping panoramic views, as well as a VIP suite on the main deck. Crew quarters are exceptionally large and well-laid-out for a yacht of this size.

• 126 Explorer. Blending contemporary styling with stellar seakeeping abilities, this expedition yacht has a 26-foot beam that makes her feel more spacious than other yachts of her class. Accommodating 10 guests and 6 to 8 crew, she features a bridge-deck master stateroom, VIP and captain’s cabins on the main deck, and three guest suites on the lower deck.

• 130 Explorer. Cheoy Lee Hull No. 5218 currently in build with an estimated delivery date of late summer 2022. With an operating draft of 7’ to 7.5’ and a fuel capacity of over 10,000 gallons, she is equally suited to global adventuring and island-hopping in The Bahamas. Accommodating 10 guests and 6 to 8 crew, she features a main-deck master and equivalent-sized guest suites that make her an ideal charter vessel.

• 132 Explorer. Designed for experienced owners who prefer the Aft House expedition yacht configuration, the 132 Explorer lets you store all your tenders and toys on the foredeck, out of the way. This four-deck yacht accommodates 10 guests and 6 to 8 crew. Her luxurious five-stateroom layout includes a comfortable full-beam master suite located amidships.

The Cheoy Lee Tradition series yachts deliver a fresh new look and feel for the tri-deck fiberglass megayacht. Combining semi-planing hull performance with luxury accommodations and Cheoy Lee’s outstanding seakeeping capabilities, these easy-to-maintain fiberglass yachts ensure that the journey is just as enjoyable as the destination. This is perfect vessel to start a new family tradition of comfortable and gracious cruising.

“Designed for the American yachtsman, the Cheoy Lee Tradition series brings luxury, style and functionality together,” Overing said. “Powered by twin CAT C32 ACERT diesel marine engines, rated at 1,600 hp each, the 6,000-gallon fuel capacity will offer excellent range, depending on the speed.”

The Cheoy Lee Tradition line currently includes the following model:

118 Tradition . Delivering a 21-knot cruising speed, this luxury megayacht is full of inviting social gathering spaces, including an enclosed skylounge, which is rare on a yacht of her class. The main deck encompasses a country kitchen and master suite with 180-degree panoramic views. Two VIP suites and two twin suites round out the accommodations for 10 guests, making the 118 Tradition an ideal yacht for charter operations. Her 6-foot draft also makes her a great boat for The Bahamas.
