The five Galati siblings, along with their children, are paving the way for Galati Yachts’ future

galati yacht basin

The matriarch of the Galati family, Anna Maria, was pregnant with the youngest of her five children. Michael Galati, the patriarch of the family, didn’t want to raise his children in New York and had always loved being near the water. Florida was the perfect destination.

Fitting, considering the family eventually ended up on Anna Maria Island, which is where the family’s business, Galati Yachts, is still based today.

With the passing of Michael Sr., in 1992, the business was passed down to his five children, Joseph, Carmine, Fran, Michael Jr. and Chris. Now, entering its third generation, the Galati children have their own children stepping into the business.

In 1992, when the second generation stepped in and took over running the business, it had one location.

Now, Galati Yachts has 15 locations, including two international locations, generating more than $200 million in revenue.

Father would be proud. But, as Fran says, the story of how it all started would probably surprise most people.

It started in a little storeroom that was the home of the Galati family, of seven people.

“We moved to Hollywood and mom was pregnant … maybe she wasn’t pregnant yet?” Fran says. “No, she was, she had Chris on the way to Hollywood …”

“Well, she didn’t have him in the car on the way down here,” Mike adds, jokingly, teasing his sister’s way of phrasing the story. “Chris was born after they had moved here.

“Anyway, the four of us were born [already],” Fran adds.

The back-and-forth, and loving, way the Galati siblings communicate with one another is a testament to their family bond. And the fun they have with each other.

Michael Sr. was a natural-born salesperson, Fran says. He was the dreamer, while Anna Maria provided the support. The backbone of the large family, if you will.

“My father had the vision, and the dream, and my mother was the support system behind him,” Fran says.

When the Galatis landed on Anna Maria Island, 53 years ago, there was nothing really there. But there was this small marina, devastated by a hurricane. That marina would go on to be Galati Yacht’s home.

Fran recalls her brothers standing guard by the bathroom, accessible from the outside, to protect her from raccoons.

“It was our home and our playground,” Fran says. “It was a family business from the get-go. We just never realized it.”

The Galati playground looked vastly different than the images of playgrounds most people would think of. Filling up boats with gas, fishing and cleaning docks.

“We didn’t know we were working,” Mike says.

Later, in the 1970s, the Galati family moved away from the storeroom and into a larger duplex apartment. After living in the duplex, the family built a home, which later would become Galati’s yacht basin building at its Anna Maria Island location. That building still stands today.

“It never felt like we didn’t have anything or that we were struggling,” Fran says.

The business began to grow, and evolve, after Galati Yachts got into selling new boats, in 1976.

It wasn’t Galati Yachts yet. The business had a few names during its time. It was known as Anna Maria Yacht Basin, for a while.

Adding Galati to the name offered a lesson in the value of attaching one’s family name to a family business.

“When you want your name on it, you have to deliver to a higher standard,” Mike says. “That has been a driving factor for all of us.”

In 1992, Michael Sr. passed away, and the business was passed down to the five Galati siblings. Over time, each Galati sibling was able to find their “place” in the business.

“There are people that want to know what time it is and there are people that build the watch,” Mike says.

Today, the Galati siblings all play a role in the business. Joe and Carmine, the eldest, have split the product lines and handled the sales of their respective lines. Mike is the service director for all of the Galati locations. They refer to this department as the customer support team, because that’s what the team is focused on, servicing the customer, not the boats. Fran is the human resources and information technology director. Chris, the youngest of the siblings, runs the yacht basin and partakes in fishing tournaments.

“We all have our niche that we’re really good at,” Fran says.

The same trend applies to the, up and coming, third generation.

“The next generation, most are college graduates and they’re all working here,” Mike says. All 12 of them.

But both Fran and Mike agree, the Galati family doesn’t believe in handouts to their own children.

“They all had to earn their way. Nothing was given,” Fran says. “Just like us, they had to work for it.”

And the fourth generation of the Galati family is now being born. Angela has a 2-year-old daughter, Charlotte, and is pregnant with her second child. And Jay Dee has three boys, Luke, 4 years old, Henry, 2 years old, and Wallace, 3 months old.

“They have the same passion that my dad had, that we have,” Fran says.

The large Galati family values closeness and sees the benefits that has for the future of the business.

“I feel the key to success with having multiple generations working together is you have to have them together, a lot. Our children are like siblings not like cousins,” Fran says.

While the third generation has opted to join the family business, it was always an option and not an expectation.

“Don’t force it. That would be my suggestion to others with generational leadership, don’t force it. Everybody will go to where their strengths are,” Mike says.

It sounds glamorous on paper, owning a yacht business. But it’s hard work.

“We work 24/7 for our customers. We work hard to give them a great boating experience,” Fran says. “We work hard and we play hard.”

For Fran, fishing is her “play hard” and a great passion of hers.

galati yacht basin

She’s been able to compete in tournaments and, for a while, even held a world record. She caught a gag grouper in June 2001, weighing 38 pounds and 13 ounces. It was, at that time, the world record for a catch of the heaviest fish of a species in its approved line class category.

She since has been beaten, but plans to reclaim it.

“In water,” Mike answers for her with a laugh.

It’s evident the Galati family is full of genuine adoration for each other, appreciation for their parents, and what they built, and a lot of laughter.

“We have a hard time distinguishing between work and family. We can’t because it’s just our life,” Fran says. “Our mission statement is to exceed the expectations of our customers. We’re all hands-on. It’s in all of us.”

It’s the Galati way. And it works. ♦

A Lifestyle Celebration - 16 Years

vie-magazine-galati-yachts

The galati yacht family, by sallie w. boyles.

As Joe Galati, president of Galati Yacht Sales, explains, certain people have a “boating gene.” For them, owning a boat, whether it’s a kayak or a luxury yacht, provides more than a playful diversion; it indulges a passion to venture out to sea. That yearning to be on the water is what launched the Galatis’ family business over forty years ago and continues to fuel its success.

T he dream began with Joe’s parents, Anna Maria and Michael Galati Sr. Although he worked in his father’s New York bakery, Mike (as everyone called him) most enjoyed helping out at a marina owned by a family friend. With a shared loved of boating and a sense that the lifestyle they desired could be found in Florida, the couple spent two years searching for business opportunities. They were visiting the state when they came across a marina for sale on (coincidentally) Anna Maria Island, a barrier island off the southwest coast of Florida between Tampa Bay and Sarasota. Although the marina had been destroyed by a tornado the previous year, the Galatis spotted potential in the debris. They bought the property and moved to Florida. Joe, the eldest of their five children, was just ten, so he and his siblings would grow up in the business of boating.

The marina demanded a full-on commitment of time and energy, but even the physical labor suited the Galatis. Without question, the children accepted their individual responsibilities—from pumping gas to servicing boats—when they were old enough to lend a hand. Learning from their parents, who openly discussed business decisions in the presence of the kids, the children gravitated to jobs that best suited their unique talents and interests. Today, Joe serves as president, a position he has held since his father passed away in 1992; Carmine manages sales for Galati Yacht Sales and runs PR; Fran heads human resources; Mike Jr. directs customer support; and Chris oversees activities in the Anna Maria yacht basin and spearheads the fishing side of the business.

Their ability to get along and flourish individually presented good reasons for each child to come aboard full-time.

Outsiders often marvel at the way the five siblings run a company so smoothly. “We are all extremely different with separate skill sets,” explains Joe, “so we defer to one another based on our expertise. We also share the same work ethic. As we learned about problems other family businesses faced, we realized how incredibly fortunate we were to get along as equal owners. In the early days, we didn’t know any better; we took it for granted that all families operated this way.”

Their ability to get along and flourish individually presented good reasons for each child to come aboard full-time. Joe and Carmine, in fact, were in their twenties and fully committed to the marina when their youngest brother, Chris, broke his neck in a diving accident. With Fran and Mike Jr. also helping part-time, Anna Maria and Mike Sr. knew the business would be in good hands while they focused on Chris and his recovery. In fact, they rented a house and stayed in Orlando while he was hospitalized there under the care of specialists. Although his injury left Chris a quadriplegic, he moved forward with his family’s can-do spirit. A sports fisherman who has captured world titles, the husband and father of twins appears on televised fishing shows, making him the celebrity of the group.

The Galatis, however, became known in the boating world for their star treatment of customers. By the mid-1990s, their excellence in servicing boats, including warranty work, caught the attention of Viking Yachts. Eager to establish a service-oriented dealership, Viking invited the family to take over sales for their region of Florida. Accepting the offer, Galati Yacht Sales was born.

Today, Galati is not only Viking’s number one dealership, but the company has also prospered in the luxury market as a preferred seller of numerous brands, including Tiara, Cruisers, Grand Banks, Maritimo, Princess, and Horizon. Galati also has a team of forty-four brokers, covering nine regions, who facilitate sales of pre-owned yachts. “We specialize in inboard powered yachts thirty feet and larger,” says Joe. Prices range from fifty thousand to nineteen million dollars, and Galati’s clientele is about evenly split between those who go out to fish and those who love to cruise.

Few dealers generate the kind of sales volume necessary to concentrate in the high-end market, but Galati’s reputation lures buyers from all over. Competing with five thousand North American dealers through Boating Industry magazine’s rigorous application process, Galati has earned a number one national ranking multiple times for best practices and, as a result, a place in the Hall of Fame among an elite class of winners. The distinction, therefore, has attracted an international clientele in addition to customers from across the country.

Dispelling the old saying about a yacht owner’s two happiest moments being when the boat is purchased and when it’s sold, the Galatis take proactive measures to prevent buyer’s remorse. “We are big proponents of actively involving our clients in learning about their boats and taking them on the water,” says Joe. All new owners, for instance, have access to a captain to teach them the ropes. “Some will require a week of training; others will need two hours,” says Joe. “We want to make sure the customer is comfortable, so we adapt to the individual.” Galati further hosts events like “Ladies at the Helm,” led by captains and technicians, to give spouses and significant others firsthand experience.

Another Galati initiative combines learning and pleasure through destination trips, or “Rendezvous,” an idea that Joe’s wife, Jennifer, conceived and has managed since the 1980s. “We realized early on that it was important to create interest, so we design trips that give owners a reason to use their boats. It’s something to look forward to on the calendar.” With a lead boat to follow, new owners gain confidence on the open water. Likewise, seasoned and novice boaters enjoy the camaraderie shared with other yacht owners. While some trips are short, such as an April weekend voyage to the Sandestin Wine Festival in Northwest Florida, other Rendezvous entail lengthier cruises to places like the Bahamas and Key West.

“We plan about twenty-six different events, including fishing tournaments, year-round,” says Joe. He also admits that Jennifer originated the Rendezvous concept with the intent to motivate the hardworking Galatis to take time for the lifestyle that they promote to so many others. “Jennifer knew that if she involved the business, we would take time off to participate,” Joe says.

Being active in the boating community has certainly been good for business, but the resulting friendships are most treasured. “The Galatis are personal friends,” says Al Binford, a loyal Galati customer who currently owns a forty-eight-foot Maritimo yacht. “They are probably the nicest people we have ever met; everyone likes dealing with them.”

Retired from the RV business, which, like luxury boats, involves significant levels of discretionary income, Al notes that the Galatis would not have attained such success if they had made profit their first priority. “My point is that I know about customer service, but I learned even more by seeing how the Galatis treat people. Everything they do is customer oriented.” The Galatis have helped him buy and sell a number of boats. “You start out small and keep going,” he adds, explaining that trading up is common among boat owners.

Galati Yacht Sales broker Tim Malambri with his client Chuck Mills

Galati Yacht Sales broker Tim Malambri with his client Chuck Mills

Al, however, met the Galatis when he contracted them to sell a fifty-eight-foot yacht that he and his wife decided was too large. “I then downsized to a thirty-two-foot fisherman, which I purchased from the Galatis, but I missed the bigger yacht.” He returned to the Galatis to sell the smaller boat and guide him to the Maritimo, which they also service.

“The bigger boats are a little more complicated and need care, so it’s important to find people like the Galatis who can do all the maintenance.” Although he confesses, “It’s not a cheap hobby,” Al says he and his wife cannot imagine a better lifestyle. “We live on the water. Weekend trips don’t require much planning, so we just take off.”

In addition to trading up in size, boat owners also upgrade for the technological advances offered on the latest models. “The electronics are incredible,” says Joe. A pod drive system, for instance, saves fuel while also providing a joystick that maneuvers a boat sideways, allowing a first-time handler to dock like a pro. Accordingly, GPS systems use radar and autopilots to chart waters. “If you’re reef fishing, your radar will locate the fish,” Joe says, “and your GPS will hold you in the spot, regardless of the current and wind.” Like new car shoppers, those in the market for a new boat are further attracted to the hottest innovations in design.

Chuck Mills, another customer and friend of the Galatis, has upgraded a number of times to accommodate his growing family of grandchildren on overnight voyages. “My grandkids call me Poppy,” he reveals, which is why his forty-eight-foot Maritimo is named Sea Poppy . Chuck and his wife both grew up in Northwest Florida, and when they retired, they realized their shared dream was to return to the Gulf of Mexico, where they would buy a house by the water and a boat. They first purchased a sixteen-foot bass boat, but cruising became more enticing than fishing.

“We bought our last three boats from the Galatis,” Chuck says. “We shopped around quite a bit but kept going back. You join their family when you buy a boat from them.”

Both the Mills family and the Binfords are on board for a Bahamas Rendezvous, which has grown to a convoy of about fourteen boats. “As a father, I am excited to get the entire family involved in boating,” Joe says. “On the water, out of cell phone range, you can relax or take part in activities that everyone enjoys.”

The “boating gene” has already begun to surface among the youngest Galatis, but whether they enter the family business will be a personal decision for each one to make. “Some of the kids, including mine, work events, like boat shows, and they help take care of boats,” says Joe. “Several have shown an interest. My niece Angela currently works part-time handling our social media.” Considering how the business has grown, he adds, “When my father passed away, my siblings and I took the ball and ran with it. We’re looking forward to seeing what the next generation will do.”

From where the Galati’s stand today, the horizon certainly looks bright! Visit galatiyachts.com to learn more.

The sweetest driver and the most amazing relaxing time. We didn't have to worry about anything. Really throughly enjoyed our time. We drove to San Francisco to a wedding, my aunts and uncles are older and it's hard for them to see in long drives outside of our city. This was a treat! It was around 30+ of us. Super friendly customer service, everything was easy and smooth. The bus was clean as a whistle and we were able to play our own music. Bluetooth connected, waters and a TV! We brought our own snacks and a little bit of wine, we had a blast.

We rented a party bus for my husband and I's 30th and it was incredible! Mark was awesome and made sure we all got there and back safely, and we got sooo many compliments from our friends that came. Plenty of space, super clean ride and overall just a great time! Definitely recommend!

Mark was a great help and made sure the day went smoothly for us. I would recommend him and his services. Thank you!

I had my senior ball on 5/5 and Mark was amazing! I found him on yelp and had messaged him starting from February because I knew how crazy prom season would be. I copied part of the message he sent me for the quote I asked for: "The following land yacht is available for your 6 hour (5:45p-11:45p) event on the date you've requested.  30-36 passenger - $1,695.00 Our prices INCLUDE ALL FEES AND CHAUFFEUR'S GRATUITY, as well as complimentary ice and bottled water." I had 32 people on my bus and we all had enough space! The water was definitely awesome for the end of the night but Mark was so responsible and got us to SF city hall on time and safely. He was so quick at replying to my messages and I have had looked into many other places and this was the most accommodating and reasonably priced. Highly recommend !!

Our group had an amazing time! Mark arrived on time to pick us up and the bus was clean and spacious. The bathroom on board was an added plus. The pricing is very favorable to other companies and the bus has everything you need. I wish I had taken pictures of the interior because the other photos on here don't do it justice. There's also a TV that you can stream to. We ended up extending our reservation an hour because we didn't want it to end. We will definitely be using Mark again in the future.

First class experience from pickup, journey, to drop off. Our chauffeur Kelvin provided us with a safe and wonderful experience to make for a good time. Will definitely be hiring this company for future corporate events and celebrations. Keep up your good work. Thank you.

I had my 40th birthday bash and Mark was amazing. Bus was very clean and roomy with a bathroom which was a plus. Hands down, book with Pacific Land Yachts if you are looking for a party bus. Would definitely do business again!

Mark is pretty darn awesome! We chartered his land yacht for a work event. Everyone had an amazing time, and everyone said that they would definitely want to work with Mark again for both future and personal events that require group transportation. FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY!

I rented a bus for my brothers 30th birthday and it was an unforgettable night! The bus was in great condition and so much bigger than I imagined. It even had a restroom which was helpful because we had it reserved for 5 hours. The driver was fantastic and let us blast our music and dance the whole time. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a good time!!

Great driver. Smooth sailing for a large group of 30+! Very nice clean bus (with a bathroom!!) We had such a great time. I can't wait to do it again.

U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 086-02

Probing the los angeles basin—insights into ground-water resources and earthquake hazards.

More than 10 million people live in the Greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. Much of this population depends on water pumped from beneath the surface of the Los Angeles Basin. For example, one-third of the water consumed by the 4 million residents in the central and west coast basins is ground water. Successful management of this ground-water resource requires knowing where and how fast the water moves in the various layers of sediment that fill the basin.

Since 1995, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has been working with the Water Replenishment District of Southern California in a cooperative ground-water and geologic study of the Los Angeles Basin. Now, with additional support from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, the USGS is expanding this program to study the distribution and geologic history of sediments as deep as 1,500 feet (450 meters) below city streets. This information is critical not only to ground-water management but also to earthquake hazard assessment in the densely populated region. During a strong earthquake, ground shaking may cause water-saturated sediment to “liquefy,” resulting in ground failure. Therefore, knowing the composition of near-surface sediment is important for assessing the vulnerability of buildings to liquefaction and other damaging effects of earthquakes.

The USGS has already drilled more than 30 monitoring wells throughout the Los Angeles Basin and has collected chemical, geologic, hydrologic, and geophysical data from these and other wells in the region. One critical issue being examined is seawater intrusion into freshwater aquifers along the coastal parts of the basin. Another such issue is the transport and fate of water diverted into spreading ponds in the Montebello Forebay, an area of the basin where the underlying sediment is relatively coarse and clay poor and so allows surface water to infiltrate into and recharge the ground-water system.

Ideally, when the monitoring wells are drilled in the Los Angeles Basin, attempts are made to recover intact sediment cores from the full length of a well. Because drilling is costly, large parts of the basin must be explored by other means. Geophysical techniques, such as seismic imaging and gravity surveys, are used to interpolate the character of sediments between wells. Geologic mapping of surface deposits in the basin provides clues to what lies beneath. In harbors and offshore areas, geologic structure below the water surface is revealed by using a ship-towed system that probes the sediments with acoustic pulses. The data obtained using this range of techniques help to characterize the three-dimensional geologic structure and ground-water flow system of the basin.

The present distribution of gravel, sand, and clay in the Los Angeles Basin reflects the interplay between the seashore processes and streams carrying sediment from the upland areas surrounding the basin. Similar processes operated in the past; therefore, knowing the geologic history of changes in sea-level, climate, and rivers allows prediction of the distribution of subsurface sediments in the basin and their possible effects on the regional ground-water flow and seismic hazards.

In the cores recovered in the Los Angeles Basin so far, several past cycles of advance and retreat of the sea have been identified. Each cycle leaves a signature in the sediments by producing distinctive layering or bedding, evidence of erosion, and telltale assemblages of fossils. Preliminary age determinations of core samples indicate a correlation of these cycles with the sea-level changes that occurred in the past as a result of the storing and release of vast quantities of water during alternating glacial periods (“ice ages”) and intervening warm periods.

An example of how sediments can be interpreted to reveal past conditions was provided during recent drilling of a USGS water-monitoring well in the City of Long Beach. Shells and thick pieces of wood were discovered in coarse sand at a depth of 400 feet (120 meters). This sediment layer, although found hundreds of feet below the surface and several miles inland from the present shoreline, is an ancient beach deposit and has been dated at about 300,000 years old. This date correlates to a high stand of sea level during a warm period between ice ages. The ancient beach is now well below the current ground surface because the Los Angeles Basin has subsided with time as it filled with sediment.

Much information has already been collected in the ongoing study of the Los Angeles Basin. To evaluate the potential effects of alternative strategies for water management, USGS scientists are using these data to develop a computer simulation of ground-water flow in the basin. In addition, to further evaluate the ground-water resource, as well as earthquake hazards, the scientists are using the data to develop a model of the three-dimensional geology of the basin. This model includes ages, thicknesses, grain sizes, and environments of deposition of sedimentary beds; locations and quality of water-bearing zones; and locations of major fractures and faults. This geologic model will incorporate the concept of “sequence stratigraphy,” which recognizes the influence of climate-driven depositional cycles on the distribution of sediment types.

During the next several years, the USGS will be drilling and coring more wells in the Los Angeles Basin and applying geologic and ground-water models to address a host of practical questions for the region: What are the main pathways for seawater intrusion? What are the best strategies for recharging the ground-water supply, such as pumping, injecting, and spreading water? Where are faults located underground and what earthquake hazards do they pose? Which areas face greater risks to life and property during earthquakes because they are more likely to experience intensified shaking or soil liquefaction?

The cooperative efforts of the USGS, the Water Replenishment District of Southern California, and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works are providing a better understanding of the ground-water system and geology of the Los Angeles Basin. This knowledge is essential to ensuring future adequate ground-water supplies for this populous urban region and to mitigating the threat posed by earthquakes.
