• Are children allowed on charters? Chartering a yacht can make for an excellent family vacation, with activities to entertain both children and adults. In general, the crew are not responsible for their safety. We recommend that you bring childcare if you want to truly relax and have a carefree time while ensuring your children are being looked after.
• Why is there a 3% credit card convenience charge? At Odyssey Yachts, we are hyper concerned about your privacy and the security of your payment details. We use one of the largest and most trusted credit card processing partners in the world to handle all credit card transactions. None of your sensitive payment details are stored on our servers, and we are compliant with the strictest PCI requirements. The 3% fee goes to cover the credit card processing fee.
• Do the crew need to be tipped? Although not mandatory, it is customary to leave a gratuity for the work of the crew and the captain at the end of a charter. Most brokers recommend a tip of 15% of the charter fee. Odyssey Yachts automatically includes a gratuity charge of 15% for charters and this fee is paid out to the captain and crew of each charter. If you would like to add an additional tip, you are more than welcome to pay the captain at the end of your charter. The captain will make sure any additional tips are split accordingly with the crew. If you are chartering outside of the North America, you are recommended to pay the captain a tip upon disembarkation for a job well done.
• Why do you charge a 2-day rate for a 24-hour charter? If you are looking to do an overnight, 24-hour charter, a 2-day rate is typically charged. The reason behind this 2-day charge is that the boat is being chartered by you as the client for the 24-hour period and we/the owner are not able to charter the boat for those 2 days.
• What is a charter agreement? A Charter Agreement is a legal document between the broker, customer, owner and crew that outlines the key terms of your yacht charter. It will specify among other things your yacht’s technical specifications, cruise date, intended destinations, yacht pickup and drop-off details, insurance and cancellation terms.
• Why is the 7-day rate for a term charter priced as a 6-day charter? This is known as the “rule of 6” and is industry standard. When a client is chartering a yacht for a 7-day term charter (or longer), it is customary to have every 7th day provided to the customer complimentary. So, if a customer is chartering for 7 days, they are only charged a 6-day rate. If a customer charters for 2 weeks, it is customary to only charge for a 12-day rate instead of 14 days, and so forth.
• What is this 30% APA, and why is it charged on multi-day charters? It is industry standard to collect a 30% APA (advance provisioning allowance) for any multi-day term charters. This APA is collected from the client and passed on to the captain and crew to provision the yacht per the client’s specifications and also used as an allowance to pay for any berthing fees and fuel fees incurred during the course of the charter. If there is are any funds remaining in the APA upon disembarkation, the broker can return the remaining amount back to the client, or the client can pay the remaining funds towards the crew gratuity
• When is my payment collected? Is it refundable? Once you confirm your reservation, your broker will process your payment. If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is confirmed more than 7 days in advance, a deposit of either $1,000 USD or 50% of the total cost of the reservation (whichever is greater) is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 7 days away, the remainder of the amount due is processed. If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is made 7 days or less in advance, the total price of your reservation is processed immediately. If you are booking for a multi-day charter and your reservation is confirmed more than 30 days in advance, a deposit of 50% of the cost of the yacht is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due. Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.
• Can I charter a boat for a period longer than just a half day or full day to sleep aboard and explore various islands and coastline? Chartering a yacht for a period longer than a single day and having guests sleep aboard is what is referred to as a "Term Charter". In order to book a term charter, you will simply select your embarkation and disembarkation dates and you’ll need to pay via bank transfer as opposed to credit card. You’ll also work with your broker to set an itinerary and have a meal preferences and activity sheet so the crew has a detailed provisioning list for your charter.
• How do I book a yacht with Odyssey Yachts? It's easy to charter a yacht on the Odyssey Yachts website! First, choose the location in which you want to charter. Once you find a yacht you like, you can request a reservation. Your reservation request will be sent to the broker that manages that particular yacht. Once your reservation is confirmed, we charge your credit card on file and the broker will follow up with a Charter Agreement for you to sign.
• Will arrangements be made for airport pick-up? Odyssey Yachts will be happy to arrange to have you and your party picked up and transported to your yacht when you and your guests arrive at the airport. If you would like to arrange airport pickup, simply coordinate with your Odyssey Yachts representative and they will be happy to assist.
• What if your servers get hacked? Is my payment information really safe? As stated in the previous two questions, customer payment information is not stored on our servers. If our servers were to get hacked into by a third party, no sensitive payment information would be found.
• Are pets allowed aboard? Typically, pets are not allowed aboard for health and safety reasons, and sea travel can be extremely uncomfortable for animals. If you need to be accompanied by your pet for any reason, we ask that you check with your broker for the yacht’s pet policy.
• Is smoking permitted aboard? In general, smoking is not permitted inside most yachts, and is strictly forbidden in any cabins or staterooms. Usually, yachts will have a designated smoking area on the aft deck or flybridge, but please ask your captain and crew before lighting up.
• Can I bring my own alcohol and food onto the boat? In almost all cases, you are allowed to bring your own food and beverages for your yacht charter. Or you can work with your broker and they can coordinate to have beverages delivered to your boat prior to embarkation. If you would like to have a chef onboard, you can work with your broker and they will be able to assist with this request.
• What is supplied aboard? All of our yachts are stocked with waters, soft drinks and ice along with yachting necessities aboard such as toilet paper, sunscreen, linens and towels. You are always welcome to bring your own supplies if you’d prefer.
• Are there set hours in which the yacht can cruise? In general, you can sail at most times of the day if weather and visibility conditions allow it, and providing it doesn’t conflict with the itinerary discussed with your broker and the captain. Always work with your Odyssey Yachts representative as they are familiar with the local laws and will be able to advise on what is possible and what is not advisable.
• What do I need to bring with me? All the essentials will be waiting for you once you step foot on your yacht. If you have something specific, you’d like to bring, feel free. However, we recommend packing light. Most people will want to pack bathing suits, sunglasses, boating shoes or athletic shoes. If you’re planning to visit any islands outside of your home country, please remember to bring your passport and visas (if required). If you are boating in American waters and not a Canadian national, please remember to bring your passport with you. It is required by law and in the event, you encounter the Canadian Coast Guard, they will ask you to show it immediately. If you are a Canadian resident, then you’ll need to have a valid driver's license or any other government issued ID. If anyone in your party is prone to seasickness, over the counter medications or prescriptions may be a good idea. Soft sided luggage is recommended as it usually fits in cabin compartments and is gentle on woodwork and paint.
• Can I choose the food and drink served aboard? Most yachts will be stocked with waters, soft drinks and ice for your charter. If you would like, you can always bring your own food and beverages for your charter, or you can have your broker arrange to have food and beverages delivered to your yacht prior to embarkation. Another option is to have a chef onboard for your charter that can prepare meals for you while on charter. For multi-day (term) charters, you will fill out a meal preferences sheet that will inform the crew of what meals you would like prepared for your charter and what food and beverage preferences you have, so that the boat will be provisioned exactly to your specifications, and the chef will be able to prepare a menu for you in advance of your charter for you to review and approve.
• How many extra guests are allowed aboard? You’ll notice that most yachts have a cruising capacity of no more than 12-15 guests. This is due to the fact that most local coast guards have a law in place that dictates that no more than 12-15 guests can be onboard a chartered yacht regardless of the size of the vessel. If you have more than 12 guests in your party, work with your yacht specialist, as they will be able to assist with finding a yacht that is certified to hold more than 12 guests, or they can help arrange a multi-boat charter so your party can remain compliant with local laws and tie up together once on anchor.

BOAT: It sure gives a tropical vibe. Spacious and it's great that there are 2 floors! They have 2 coolers for us ti keep our drinks, the bathroom was cute and nice, the decor was great and most importantly captain Ryan and Levi seemed to enjoy hosting us and were very helpful. We even stopped for a dip! I would recommend 10/10 for a fun tiki themed party!

It was such an amazing experience! The boat is actually bigger than I thought and the captain (Calvin) was so nice! He took us to all the best places and stopped at the perfect spots for photos! Such a great experience celebrating my friends bachelorette!!

Words don’t fully capture the experience, but we’ll try to do it justice. From the hot heat of the sauna to the shocking chill of the ocean, our captain gave us memories we are sure not to forget anytime soon. With roof top jumps and seal sightings we were overcome with the joy of living in that moment. Now our phones are full of photos and videos and a group chat that is already planning when to go back. Thank you for this amazing experience and look forward to seeing you soon.

We had such a great time on the sauna boat! Would 100% do it again. The captain, Nate, was knowledgeable and fun and even took some great videos for us jumping off the roof of the sauna. It was a beautiful sunny day and the route was scenic and calm too.

This is an amazing one of a kind experience. As someone who enjoys sauna very much, this sauna was on point! It got plenty hot and threw off some awesome bursts of loyly! We went on an overcast day but that probably made the experience even better for contrast therapy. We saw some jellyfish along the way and even had a pair of seals follow us for a bit. All of my friends who came couldn’t stop raving about it! Do yourself a favour, get a group of like minded people and enjoy the tranquility on the water! If you’re concerned about price, we only had 7 people but everyone thought the experience was well worth the money we paid!

One hour free of rental charge  with 4 or 5 hours trip departing before 10:00AM . (e.g. Start at 9:00AM and end at 14:00PM, charge 4 hours regular rental, the driver needs to come to our office half hour in advance for check-in and training). On the booking availability calendar, select the available Early Bird Hours time slot with discounted price. Limited supply.

Important Information:

– Person 21 years of age or older as the driver, fluent in English.

– At check-in time, present valid photo ID and the original credit card that was used for your online booking.  

– Hourly rates do not include fuel, one time $10 fee per driver, and applicable tax.

– On the rental date, a damage deposit of $1,000 (16/17/18ft boats) or $1,500 (19/21ft boats) of either a major credit card or cash. (If use Visa Debit or Master Debit card for fund holding and release, upon fund release, it may take up to one week for the client to receive refund depending on the client’s bank system.)        

– Boat drivers must arrive at our rental office 30 minutes before the rental start time to complete check-in and training process.  (Training Video is available on FAQ page)

– 24 hour cancellation or reschedule policy! (100% refund if client cancel or reschedule 24 hours in advance to boating time, 50% refund if client cancel or reschedule during the period of 1-24  hours before boating time. ) 

–  Predetermined rental slots availability online with a minimum rental duration of 2 hours.  If you need to rent multiple boats or want to rent one boat for more than 4 or 5 hours, please refer to the FAQs under Boat Rentals section  to make your reservations.

Boaters' safety concerns raised after Vancouver seaplane collision

After multiple people were injured following a collision between a seaplane and a pleasure boat on Saturday, boaters are sharing tips on how to stay safe on Vancouver's waters.

Two people were hospitalized after a Harbour Air seaplane taking off from the nearby Harbour Flight Centre hit a boat  near Stanley Park on Saturday afternoon.

Canada's Transportation Safety Board (TSB) is investigating the collision. The plane's five passengers and pilot were not hurt, but people on the pleasure boat suffered injuries.

The crash has sparked calls for more safety measures in and around Burrard Inlet where the collision occurred, which sees thousands of recreational boaters every summer but also serves as the route for commercial vessels, tugboats and cruise ships. 

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is responsible for monitoring ship traffic in the inlet. Its harbour master, Sean Baxter, said anyone going out on the water should check the port's website ahead of time to see what areas they're allowed to access.

"It's important that recreational vessels look and watch out for larger vessels, as well as seaplanes," he said. "These types of port users have limited visibility, so don't assume that they can see you.

"We encourage everyone to listen, including listening for aircraft ... planes landing and taking off need plenty of space."

Who has the right of way?

While the TSB is investigating the exact cause of Saturday's crash, it has led to questions over which vessel has the right of way on the water.

Ian Gilson, director of the Canadian Safe Boating Council, says it comes down to which vessel is more maneuverable.

"The vessel that is least maneuverable is the one that has the right of way," he told Michelle Eliot, host of CBC's  BC Today . "When a floatplane is either landing or taking off, it cannot change its course.

"So any other objects on the water have the responsibility to give way and to stay well clear."

Statistics Canada says almost 6.5 million boating trips were taken between July and September 2021, with Gilson estimating that more than 16 million recreational boating trips are taken each year.

He says that people looking to hit the waters this summer should be mindful of boating safety tips , including wearing a life jacket, as ship traffic increases in and around Vancouver.

Calls for more buoys

Daniel and Candice Hecjman said they had close encounters with two different seaplanes while sailing in Coal Harbour in February 2019.

The couple is calling for more buoys and lights in Burrard Inlet to warn boaters to avoid areas where seaplanes can land.

"If the planes knew exactly where they're supposed to take off and land, then boaters will never go in that zone," Daniel said.

In response to a question about adding more buoys, a spokesperson for the port authority said that it regularly publishes procedures in its port information guide to ensure safety on the waterways.

"Since an active investigation of the incident is currently underway by the [TSB], we will await to receive the outcomes of their findings to determine if any of our procedures need to be updated," the spokesperson wrote.

No licence needed for rentals

Bruce Hayne, the executive director of Boating B.C., says that anyone new to boating should stick to less-populated areas to ensure safety.

"It's just like when you first get your [driving] licence, you probably don't want to hop onto the highway and get into heavy traffic," he said. "You want to start slowly and get comfortable with your vessel."

Hayne pointed out that in B.C., residents do not require a pleasure craft operator card if they are simply renting a pleasure boat—although he says there are discussions about changing that.

However, he says boat rental companies must provide safety checklists and demonstrations when renting boats, which should help new boaters operate safely.
