BPBA: Still Time To Enter The Annual Round The Island Powerboat Race This Sunday, August 7

Sports    |    August 4, 2022

bermuda powerboat race

BPBA News Release: BERMUDA – On Sunday, August 7th, the Bermuda Power Boat Association (BPBA) will host the round the island powerboat race .

The day commences with junior races at Ferry Reach at 10:30am.

Next there will be a Jet ski race commencing at 12:30pm. We have five (5) jet skis registered so far but hope this number will increase as we get closer.

Finally powerboat racing commences at 2pm. A, B, C, D and S class boats have entered. So far there are 18 boats registered but this number is expected to grow after the final sign up meeting this evening.

We have a number of crash boats that will be scattered around the island. The Coast Guard will be on hand to support crash boats. We advise it is an offence to disobey instructions given by any crash boat or Coast Guard.

bermuda powerboat race

Pompano is an area many congregate to spectate. In previous years our racers have found it difficult to navigate through spectator boats anchored in the area and find it difficult to maintain their own race line. This years buoys will be placed along the Pompano Beach stretch. We ask for those intending to anchor to do so on the outside of these buoys. The teams will be racing between the shore line and the buoys.

bermuda powerboat race

We ask for exceptional care and caution when moving around near the race course. Any wake thrown can have a disastrous effect on the racing boats. Care should be taken to not traverse over any of the race lines once the race has started. The race boats will be traveling at full speed – in excess of 100kph.

Team Bermuda secures first powerboat podium finish

bermuda powerboat race

Steven Bridges and David Selley made a major breakthrough against some of the world’s best during the American Powerboat Association Offshore National Series season opener in Key West, Florida, last weekend.

The dynamic duo powered their way to a first podium finish among the professional ranks in their 32-foot twin-engined catamaran, S 25 Team Bermuda/GL Construction, after claiming the silver medal in the Super Stock class on their debut in the 7 Mile Offshore Grand Prix in Florida with a time of 39min 02.2sec.

Bridges and driver Selley intended to use the event, held from April 26 to 28 and hosted by Race World Offshore, as a warm up but got more than they bargained for after several rival S Class boats showed up on the start line.

“This race is not on the S Class schedule for series point racing, so we were just running the race as a shake-down and to get some seat time, not expecting a fleet of ten S Class boats to show up for the race,” boat owner and throttle man Bridges told The Royal Gazette .

“This was the first race for us in Marathon as last year’s race was cancelled due to bad weather.”

The local team did not enjoy the best of starts but quickly shrugged off the early setback to thrust themselves into the hunt for honours.

“We drew No 7 for the line up and even though we had a slow start, we quickly made our way to second position,” Bridges added.

“We then went into guardian mode and got passed by S1 for second place but held third for the majority of the race until again we went into guardian mode, which put us in fourth.

“Unfortunately for the boat in third place, they had issues as well and we passed them to take back third place.

“Even though we made mistakes and had issues, we were still happy with the overall race and ended up second on the podium as the first-place boat was penalised.

“The conditions were windy, which moved the boat around a lot, but there were no swells, just a chop.”

As one might expect, the podium display has done the local team’s confidence the world of good.

“It was our first podium racing at this level and we hope to carry on the results throughout the season,” Bridges said.

“The top five boats were run by guys who have been racing for many years, so to know that we can run alongside, and even in front of them, is encouraging for the team.

“Thanks to all our sponsors, our team and supporters as this would not be possible without them.”

Nevada based team S 2 Power Boats claimed top honours with team S 43 Celsius third, and Bridges and Selley are both thrilled to have realised their dream of racing professionally in the United States.

“I have been racing in Bermuda for 25 years and it has always been a dream of ours to race out here in the United States, and we were able to make it happen,” Bridges said.

“We put it together pretty quickly so it was a big learning curve for us.”

Selley added: “It has always been a dream of ours to compete overseas and we are just so happy and proud to be a part of it.

“We are going up against major corporations and against the best of the best out here.”

The local team achieved an impressive fourth place on their debut competing in the United States at the Baystar Clearwater Offshore Nationals in Clearwater, Florida, in September 2022 and also did the island proud with a sixth-place finish in the Race World Offshore Key West World Championships in Florida last November.

How US Sailing’s Offshore Office is Gearing Up to Support the 2024 Newport to Bermuda Race

The Newport to Bermuda Race is a prestigious biennial event that spans 636 nautical miles and is set to take place starting June 21, 2024, attracting a diverse fleet of 164 boats. For boats competing in this challenging offshore race, US Sailing’s Offshore Office plays a crucial role in ensuring fair competition. The Office is charged with acquiring, processing, and archiving all data to issue certificates to boats based in the United States. These certificates are used for various regattas, including the Newport to Bermuda Race.

“The rating system is crucial because it allows sailboats of different designs and sizes to compete fairly in races,” says Jim Teeters, US Sailing Head of Offshore Ratings Office

The Newport to Bermuda Race uses the Offshore Racing Rule (ORR) for its handicapping system, as it is believed by the race organizers to fairly handicap different boats in a diverse fleet without favoring any type of boat in any particular type of boat under varying conditions. Handicapping systems of this nature have been in place for this regatta since 1978.

The ORR grew out of a desire among North American sailors who felt that the International Measurement System (IMS) no longer met their needs. The ORA was founded in 2004 by the Cruising Club of America (CCA), Chicago Yacht Club (CYC), and the Transpacific Yacht Club (TPYC).

How US Sailing Determines Ratings

ORR is one of several handicapping systems used by US Sailing to rate and categorize boats for offshore racing competitions.

They consider a wide range of factors influencing a boat’s performance, such as hull shape, sail area, displacement, and righting moment.

To rate boats for the ORR system, US Sailing conducts detailed measurements and assessments of each vessel, including the boat’s hull and appendages, and its rig and sails.

Using this data, a sophisticated computer modeling system then analyzes the boat’s performance across a variety of wind speeds and sea conditions. Velocity Prediction Programs (VPPs) simulate how the boat would perform in different scenarios and generate a performance profile that forms the basis of the boat’s ORR rating.

The ORR rating is expressed as a time correction factor (TCF), which is used to adjust the boat’s elapsed time during a race to produce a corrected time. This corrected time determines the boat’s placement in the race, allowing for fair competition among boats of different sizes and designs.

The TCF is dynamic, meaning it can be adjusted over time as more data about the boat’s performance becomes available or as modifications are made to the boat.

Both US Sailing and the Offshore Racing Association (ORA) have, over the last decade plus, been working with various race organizers on improving the handicap ratings used for their races.  The Newport Bermuda and Marion Bermuda races frequently experience the weather phenomenon called the Bermuda High.  This is essentially a zone of light wind that drifts across the racecourse and wreaks havoc with some, but not all, the boats.

Working with all these races we have developed weather-based handicap models.  More recently, working with US Sailing board member, Stan Honey, US Sailing has explored the use of weather forecasts, coupled with boat speed polar files, evaluated for best performance with routing software Expedition to develop ratings the day of the races.  F-TCF is that approach.

Rating systems are designed to be transparent and equitable, with an emphasis on promoting fair racing.

“ORA continuously reviews and updates the rule to reflect advances in boat design and to address any discrepancies that might arise. This iterative process involves input from naval architects, sailors, and race organizers, ensuring that the ORR remains a reliable and respected standard in the sailing community,” says Teeters

The ultimate goal of the ORR system is to reward skillful sailing and tactical decision-making, rather than purely design advantages, thereby enhancing the overall competitiveness and enjoyment of offshore racing.

US Sailing is in the process of developing a universal measurement database for all offshore sailboats in the US. Assigning each boat a unique ID allows the US Sailing ratings office to track each boat through its life span in an efficient manner, allowing the office to provide more accurate and timely service to members.

ORR in Racing

ORR is preferred by the Newport to Bermuda Race event organizers because it does not favor old designs, new designs, classics, or high-tech downwind flyers, nor does it reward owners that partake in expensive boat reconfigurations.

“What it does do is encourage well-prepared and capable crews,” says Teeters

According to Teeters, there aren’t many boats in existence that ORR cannot rate. ORR has two categories of certificates: Full Measurement and Partial Measurement. The Newport to Bermuda Race requires Full Measurement, with very few exceptions listed in the Notice of Race. Full Measurement requires that all the boat’s rating information comes from a US Sailing certified measurer.

Full Measurement is an added protection for fair competition by ensuring that the rating data for each boat is accurate, but also giving every boat a fair assessment of her characteristics.

The ORR is a popular measurement rule used in North America and is the rule of choice for such events as: Newport-Bermuda Race, Puerto Vallarta Race, Transpacific Yacht Race, and many more.

Including the ORR, US Sailing administers several rating and handicapping systems that allow equitable racing for diverse fleets. They are:

  • International Rating Certificate (IRC)
  • Offshore Racing Congress (ORC)
  • Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF)
  • Portsmouth Yardstick (D-PN)
  • Offshore Racing Rule (ORR)

The 2024 Newport to Bermuda Race

As the 2024 Newport to Bermuda Race approaches, US Sailing’s meticulous process of determining ratings ensures that every boat has a fair chance to compete. This commitment to fairness and accuracy upholds the spirit of the race, allowing sailors to test their skills and endurance on the open ocean. Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or a first-time participant, the rating system is a crucial component of what makes the Newport to Bermuda Race a thrilling and equitable event.

Sports | Second Storm team enjoys successful debut in Annapolis-to-Bermuda Race

Allegiant and stormy weather are the other class winners.

Second Storm, a Hallberg Rassy 53-footer owned by Adam Davis, was the PHRF class winner for the Annapolis-to-Bermuda Race. (Courtesy of Willy Keyworth/Keyworth Photography)

Last December, they worked together to enter Baca’s 65-foot powerboat named LookingGlass in the Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade. Their theme was “A Pitbull Pirate Parade” and the display won the Tom Stalder Award for Best Illumination.

Flush from that success, the friends asked each other out loud what they should do for an encore.

“Someone said let’s do the Bermuda race and everyone agreed that would be something fun,” said Davis, who proceeded to put together a crew.

Baca came aboard as a watch captain, while Domaniewicz served as tactician. They found five other sailors willing to make the 753-nautical mile passage from Annapolis to Hamilton. Davis and crew enjoyed a successful debut in the Mustang Survival Annapolis to Bermuda Race, winning PHRF class in an extremely tight battle.

“We are thrilled with the result because this team of sailors had never even raised a sail together before this race,” Davis said. “We absolutely loved everything about the whole experience. I personally learned a lot and feel much more confident in my sailing ability.”

Remarkably, Second Storm was the first of three boats in PHRF class that finished within nine minutes of each other after more than 100 hours of racing. The Hallberg-Rassy 53 posted an elapsed time of 4 days, 4 hours, 48 minutes and 57 seconds.

Granuaile, a Jeanneau 440 skippered by Matthew Kiely, crossed the finish line just four-and-a-half. Bare Bones, a Sunfast 3600 skippered by John Tis, was less than four minutes behind Granuaile.

“It was a very exciting ending and really amazing that three boats could be that close together after sailing nearly 800 miles,” said Davis, who credited 16-year-old Jamie Taub with spearheading the decisive final push. “Jamie steered for the last two hours, which is when we won the race. He did a tremendous job driving the boat during that crucial closing stretch.”

Second Storm finished atop PHRF on corrected time by almost five hours over FuhGedAboutIt, an Outbound 44 owned by Annapolis resident Stephen Weinstock.

While Davis has plenty of offshore miles under his belt as a cruising sailor, he acknowledges there was a learning curve when it came to preparing for a point-to-point distance race. He and other members of the crew were attracted by the challenge of Annapolis-to-Bermuda as it combines the Chesapeake Bay passage of 130 nautical miles with the Atlantic Ocean crossing that involves traversing the Gulf Stream.

“The various elements of this legendary race are what made it so appealing,” Davis said. “You win by pushing to get the most out of the boat at all times and understanding how the current is going to help or hurt you. I think we were pretty spot-on in terms of understanding what the wind and current were going to do.”

Davis considers the Hallberg-Rassy 53 “an underrated” offshore platform even though it is fully equipped for cruising and carries no racing sails. Davis laughed when he looked around the marina in Hamilton and realized Second Storm was the only Annapolis-to-Bermuda Race participant with a dinghy.

“We had perfect conditions for the boat with beam and broad reaches the whole way. We were pushing 10 knots of boat speed quite often,” said Davis, noting that the Code Zero spinnaker blew out in 16 knots of wind. “I also think we pulled together an incredibly well-rounded team. There was not a problem that arose that we did not have the skill set to address.”

A total of 18 boats in four classes competed in the 23rd edition of the Mustang Survival Annapolis-to-Bermuda Race, which started June 7 on the Chesapeake Bay. Verissimo, a J/160 skippered by John Haiges, captured line honors with an elapsed time of 3 days, 22 hours, 30 minutes and 50 seconds.

Allegiant, a J/42 co-skippered by Albert Bossar and fiancee Maryline O’Shea, was the corrected time winner of ORC 1 class. Allegiant crossed the line fourth on elapsed time but corrected to 5:09:22:24 — almost three hours ahead of Aurora, an X 482 owned by Brett Mastropieri.

Bossar, an Annapolis resident, has owned the J/42 for eight years and enjoyed mixed results in offshore racing. Allegiant captured class honors in the 2019 Annapolis-to-Newport Race and was runner-up in the 2022 Annapolis-to-Bermuda Race. However, Bossar has also been forced to retire from each of those races due to breakdowns or other issues.

“I’ve always learned from the failures and rebounded stronger,” said Bossar, who works in international economic development for the federal government. “It always feels amazing to win. I feel like we maximized the opportunities the sail gods gave us in this race.”

Allegiant got out of the Chesapeake Bay in 18 hours and 34 minutes, setting the spinnaker just past Cove Point and staying on starboard gybe in 20-25 knots of wind.

“We absolutely flew down the bay. That is the fastest this boat has ever done the bay portion of a distance race,” Bossar said.

Navigator James Branson took a somewhat conservative approach in the Atlantic Ocean, plotting a course just south of the rhumb line. “We had a specific approach on how we wanted to sail through the Gulf Stream and we executed,” Bossar said. “We were dialed in the whole way with our drivers and trimmers working really hard.

Bossar and O’Shea are getting married in October and have decided to take time off from work for a honeymoon prior to the nuptials. Allegiant spent just a few hours in Hamilton before departing port for a delivery to Newport, Rhode Island, where it will begin the Newport-to-Bermuda race on June 21.

“We didn’t want to choose between the Annapolis-Bermuda and Newport-Bermuda,” Bossar said. “I wouldn’t recommend it for everyone. You have to be a little crazy to attempt that double.”

Mike Maholchic has skippered an entry in the Annapolis-to-Bermuda Race seven previous times without capturing class honors. His best result came in 1998 when Nirvana, a Tartan 415, placed second.

Maholchic, president of Reisterstown-based Facility Engineering Services, had not raced in five years and had to put together a brand new crew for 2024 Annapolis-to-Bermuda. John Groskoph and Frank Cirii served as watch captains while Bob Cantwell was aboard as navigator

Groskoph has two sons — Jake and Sean — who are varsity sailors at the College of Charleston. They joined the crew and brought teammates Evan Chenard, Hadley Walsh and Miles Wolff along for the ride.

Stormy Weather had a similar passage as Allegiant, exiting the Chesapeake Bay in 16 hours, 44 minutes and 40 seconds thanks to running-reaching conditions in 15 to 18 knots of wind.

“We had a fantastic run down the bay, which was probably the key because that got us really pumped up and gave us great energy,” Maholchic said. “That is easily the fastest I’ve ever gotten out of the bay and it got the whole crew fired up.”

Stormy Weather topped ORC Cruising class on both elapsed and corrected time, crossing the finish line more than six hours ahead of Leopolis, a 42-foot Performance Cruiser skippered by Askold Sandursky. That gap grew to more than 16 hours once handicaps were factored in.

“It was really like a dream race. Everything just fell into place perfectly,” said Maholchic, an Eastport Yacht Club member who primarily resides in Bedford, Wyoming.

This afternoon, 162 boats set sail from Newport, racing towards the Gulf Stream and kicking off the 53rd  Newport Bermuda Race . They were joined by 4,000 race fans along the shoreline, spectating the first time off Fort Adams.

The first night is expected to be slow as storms affecting southern New England have dampened the wind. It’s a race to get away from land and into the next prevailing ocean breeze and Gulf Stream current.

For those not able to catch the action live, a recording of the Race’s Starting Line Live Show Powered by Ørsted can be found on the Bermuda Race  YouTube channel . Sailing fans can also follow the progress of the race using  Palm Beach Motor Yachts online tracker  or the YB Races App.
