“Snarks are so simple and fun to sail, but teach us worlds about working boat and wind together.  I will admit, however, my favorite thing about the Snark is that I can decide to go for a sail on a lake 10 minutes from my door, and 15 minutes later I'm on the water.  It is not a big event to go- so I go often.”  John B. (Nov. 2010)

Practical Sailor Tracks Down the Best LED Tri-color Light

Testers take a look at six bulbs and lanterns from the marine led navigation light market..

buy light sailboat

When it comes to navigation lights aboard sailboats, brighter is definitely better. And our latest tests of LED nav lights proved that more light can be made with less energy. In fact, we found that replacing a conventional incandescent bulb with a light-emitting diode (LED) of similar luminosity can result in up to a 90-percent savings in energy consumed over a given period of time.

Practical Sailor’ s previous evaluations of navigation lights (September 2005 and Jan. 15, 2002) were tests of tri-color

masthead lights, sidelights, sternlights, and all-around white lights.

For this review, we narrowed the test field and focused solely on LED tri-color navigation lights (sidelights and a stern light combined in a single fixture) because of the under-sail connotation. They are most often used when the engine is off and the alternator(s) is providing no energy boost to the battery bank. This is when miserly current consumption is most appreciated.

LED lights come in all sizes and shapes, and it has been their monumental improvement in efficiency that has made the technology so appealing to energy-constrained sailors.

In the past, the most popular means of meeting the U.S. Coast Guard’s navigation light requirements for boats under 65 feet (see “Nav Light Requirements,” below) was to use an Aqua Signal Series 40 tri-color lamp housing with its long-filament incandescent bulb. Its 25-watt energy appetite not only puts a significant load on the house battery bank, but it requires a heavier-gauge wire be run up the spar in order to avoid an energy-robbing voltage drop. Swapping out the incandescent bulb for an LED drops power consumption significantly and yields just as bright of a light. During a 10-hour night sail, this results in reducing current consumption from about 20 amp-hours down to a scan’t 2 amp-hours. This savings adds up, and the extra cost of the LED bulb or light will pay for itself in longevity and energy savings.

LED Evolution

Since the late 1960s, LEDs have followed a trend that amounts to almost a doubling of light output every 36 months. (If Wall Street had done the same, a $100 investment made in 1969 would today be worth over $500,000.)

Skipping all the esoteric physics and getting down to basics leaves us with one important concept to grasp: By passing a current through certain semiconductors (materials with only a few electron holes), the electron flow instigates photon release—or more simply put, light energy is emitted. Modern LEDs comprise an anode (+) and cathode (-) that meet in a tiny cup-like reflector that contains an “n” and a “p” layer of semiconductor material.

In order to achieve white or colored light, phosphor coatings are used. Another significant breakthrough was the prism-like lens and epoxy-sealed cavity that bundles up many of these semiconductors. The resulting “bulb” reflects and refracts the light energy produced, delivering a color-controlled beam. The plasma-like brilliance of a single-source light creates lens and reflector challenges that each light manufacturer has to deal

Lopolight 200-005

with. Some makers shape a single beam with lens elements while others use an array of multiple smaller LEDs.

What We Tested

Each of the six LED tri-color masthead lights we tested for this report took a different approach to implementing the LED technology. The test field included three LED lanterns and three LED bulbs.

From Orca Green Marine (OGM), maker of the top choice among tri-colors in the 2005 Practical Sailor test, we reviewed the latest USCG 2-nautical-mile approved tri-color. The other tested lanterns were self-contained tri-color/anchor light combos from Signal Mate and Lopolight.

Among the bulbs we tested was the Lunasea, a sealed, waterproof LED lamp comprising four green, six red, and six white LEDs. From the LED Shop in Queensland, Australia, we tested the Bay15D white LED bulb with 15 diodes. The supplier recommends its use as a low-consumption (2 watts vs. 25 watts) replacement bulb for the Aqua Signal 40 incandescent. The second sealed bulb we tested was from Dr. LED, and it is third-party certified to U.S. Coast Guard standards.

LED LANTERNS

Boat owners who don’t already have a masthead tri-color light, or who plan to replace an old one—hardware and all—would do well to consider an LED lantern.

Orca Green Marine

OGM Inc.’s USCG-approved (third-party tested) tri-color/anchor light (LXTA-12v) squeezes an amazing amount of light from a minimal amount of current (0.3 amps @ 12 volts-DC).

The well-sealed, nicely machined housing and large lenses keep the LEDs in direct line of sight, regardless of heel or the viewer’s proximity. Hard, anodized endcaps and Lexan outer lens elements form a tough, water-tight seal. Its internal

OGM LXTA-12v

electronic components are potted in a dielectric sealant, and the lantern comes with a well-sealed pigtail connector.

The manufacturer claims a 50,000-hour full brightness LED life and offers a two-year warranty on the $340 lantern.

Testers’ main concern that arose during testing was that the OGM lantern produced the most RFI of all the gear we tested. Moving the handheld VHF radio to within 14 inches of the light obliterated radio reception.

Bottom line: The OGM lantern is the least expensive in its category, and it proved to be a well-made light. However, its RFI test results held it back.

This expensive, well-designed, and carefully manufactured LED tri-color/anchor light offers a multiple diode approach to illuminating each sector of coverage. The lamp’s geometry focuses individual LEDs in narrower beams and uses 36 to cover each colored zone and 44 in the white zone. In addition to adding redundancy with circuitry that allows individual diodes to fail without taking out the entire cluster, the design eliminated the hotspot inherent in tri-color lights that use single-point light sources for each sector.

This light offers a green that’s really green (see “Shades of Green,” page 14), a dead-ahead aspect with minimal overlap, and a crisp transition to the red zone. The Lopolight also sports a rugged, well-sealed housing that’s fully submersible.

Its current consumption is a tiny bit more than the most energy efficient in this group, but the value of having the light continue to work even if one or more diodes give up the ghost is a big plus.

At $689, the Lopolight was the most expensive product of all those we tested, but it also had the least RFI. It comes with a five-year warranty.

Bottom line: If quality construction and superior performance are your priorities—and cost isn’t a concern—the Lopolight will fit the bill. It gets the nod as Practical Sailor’s Best Choice.

Signal Mate

Signal Mate products are designed and manufactured by Maryland-based Kimberlite Assemblers Inc. The company sent us a pre-production version of its 2-nautical-mile tri-color lantern for testing.

The searing bright lantern scored high marks for energy efficiency. Its 0.3 amp draw at 12 volts DC compared to some of the more expensive lanterns.

The Signal Mate incorporates a finned alloy base that functions

Aqua Signal Series 40

as a heat sink and houses the driver and diodes within a polycarbonate cylindrical tube. Its endcaps and electronics are sealed and bedded in Dow Tough Gel.

Its cylindrical shape makes it well suited for masthead mounting. The light output did not appear hampered at all by the unit’s comparably small lenses, even at varying angles of heel.

The design, with a single light source per sector, created a white hotspot, but from 50 to 100 yards away, it was undetectable. Hotspots, a bright white spot that occurs when a single-point white light source illuminates a colored faceted lens, are common to this design.

Just before going to press with this review, Signal Mate sent us its new production version of this lamp. Like the pre-production unit, the LED circuitry is enclosed in a polycarbonate cylinder, but it now incorporates O-ring seals and 3M 5200 adhesive to better cope with thermal expansion and contraction. Heat dissipation and RFI suppression have been improved, and the overall fit and finish have been raised a notch. The light is certified to USCG and American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC)-16 standards.

Bottom line: The $359 Signal Mate tri-color is a cost-effective option with a good five-year warranty, and the new version boasts some necessary improvements.

The new breed of LED bulbs can add efficiency to those old Aqua Signal, Hella, and Perko incandescent nav lights that have been serving boats for decades. These plug-and-play conversions from incandescent to much more efficient LED technology are capturing market share, and the degree of this success has inspired Aqua Signal to come out with its own single-diode LED light and a new line of LED products. For those with older lamps such as the venerable Aqua Signal 40 tri-color, the following three bulb options represent good examples of what’s available in the realm of LED conversions.

The Dr. LED Polar Star 40 replacement bulb for the Aqua Signal 40 lantern comes with an interesting note. According to the Seattle firm, “a white LED should not be used behind colored lenses.” And to that end, its LED replacement bulb has three distinct color-enhanced sectors indigenous to the bulb itself. These are not stand-alone red, green, and white sectors, but instead are color-enhancing segments that ensure that red is red and green is a bright and deep shade of green. This reduced the bulb’s hotspot.

The bulb is designed in the U.S., made in China, and meets the 2-nautical-mile visibility, chromaticity, and other demands of the ABYC/USCG standards. It was the lowest current-consuming light in our test (0.1 amps), and though not the

Lunasea

brightest, it was visible and color recognizable at the 2-mile range.

Bottom line: Middle of the pack price-wise, this $50 current miser gets a Practical Sailor Budget Buy among LED bulbs for conversions.

Lunasea Lights

This well-sealed, wedge shaped, waterproof bulb uses separate LEDs for each color zone. The red sector held six LEDs, and the green four. Light-meter readings indicated that the red sector was a bit brighter than the green sector during tests. At distances beyond 100 yards, the discrepancy was not noticeable visually. Both segments could be seen at the 2-nautical-mile range.

This bulb seemed to only need a clear housing because of the excellent chromaticity match, but without being placed in a tri-lens housing, it had a rather large overlap of red and green. We noted that the red and green (bow-on aspect) covered an arc of more than 20 degrees. But by placing the tri-color lens over the bulb, the overlap was brought into an acceptable 10-degree range, creating a bright, very distinguishable tri-color light.

The Lunasea bulb was the only one in its group with the ability to keep shining even if one of the multiple diodes failed.

Bottom line: One of the brightest LEDs tested, the Lunasea light gets the Practical Sailor Recommended pick among bulbs for its top performance and lifetime warranty, the only test product to offer one.

Distributed by the Australia-based LED Shop, the white BAY-15D bulb we tested was a cluster of 15 diodes in pentagonal array of three vertical diodes per segment. This bright-white light makes a superb anchor light, and the LED Shop also recommends it as a replacement bulb for the Aqua Signal Series 40 tri-color light.

In our testing, it provided a bright red and green sector, but its colors were not as saturated as the color-specific bulbs by Dr. LED and Lunasea.

Testers’ biggest concern was the fact the bulb isn’t properly sealed. This does afford better heat dissipation, a key factor in LED longevity, but we prefer sealed bulbs.

However, the BAY-15D’s $27 price tag, its brightness and

LED Shop

minimal RFI make it a bargain as an anchor light bulb.

Bottom line: Although inexpensive and a good performer, the BAY-15D was held back by its lack of a good seal.

It would be helpful if you added the part numbers of the specific product that you’re testing. For example, when I went to the Lopolight website, I couldn’t find the product you tested. I’m a little disappointed that you didn’t test any trilights with the strobe or flash function. Perhaps I’ll keep my 20-year old Hella.

Best Small Sailboats for Beginners

sailboats for beginners

There are a number of classic trainers used by yacht club youth programs as well as techie new designs. Without mentioning specific models and brands, it’s difficult to outline which small boats are best but here are things to look for in good teaching boats.

Some of the best small sailboats for beginners include:

  • Boats with tillers steering
  • Boats with no winches
  • Sailing dinghies
  • Small sloops
  • Small catamarans
  • Rotomolded boats
  • Trailerable sailboats

Explore All Sailboat Types

Boats with Tiller Steering

Steering by tiller (rather than a wheel) can make a difference when learning. Tillers are directly connected to the rudder that manages the boat’s direction. Tillers provide quick feedback about the strength and direction of the wind as well as the boat’s turning agility at various speeds.

Boats with No Winches

Boats that require no winches to manage the sheets and halyards are best for youngsters and new sailors. These boats usually don’t experience the same forces on the sails and rigging as larger boats, which can be a handful when the wind starts to blow. Winches are usually replaced with cam or jam cleats, which are easy to use.

Sailing Dinghies

Sailing dinghies are usually rigged with one mast and one sail and offer kids and new sailors simplicity so it’s easy to learn the ropes. Less overwhelming than boats with two sails, dinghies are light and responsive. They also have a shallow draft due to side or centerboards so they can be sailed just about anywhere. In some cases (whether from a wind gust or sudden crew weight shift) sailing dinghies can capsize so students should wear lifejackets and know how to swim. Sailing dinghies are usually sailed by one or two people.

Small Sloops

Small sloops with a mast that carries head and mainsails are the next step so students learn how sails work together. Headsails can be hanked on or attached to a small roller furler. These boats may have some or no winches, which also makes them easier to maintain. These boats can usually be sailed with one to four people.

Some sloops can scale up, providing a more challenging experience for sailors as they develop skills. Certain models can carry spinnakers and larger headsails to teach sail combinations and new sail trim techniques. Others offer the ability to hike out (shift crew weight well outboard to balance the boat against the wind pressure in the sails). This kind of sailing is more advanced.

Small Catamarans

Small catamarans provide extra stability for those who may be nervous about capsizing or aren’t fond of heeling (tipping while sailing). With two hulls providing a wide and stable base, catamarans area ideal for beginners, which may be why they’re often used by resorts as their beach sailing tourist boats. Rigged with one or two sails, small cats are tiller steered and usually have a trampoline that the students sit on and sail.

Rotomolded Boats

Small rotomolded boats are very forgiving due to their durable construction. Unlike fiberglass or wooden boats, rotomolded (a type of plastic construction technique) trainers can bounce off docks or other boats and cause or sustain little damage. Dinghies and catamarans can both be made via rotomolding.

Trailerable Sailboats

Finally, small sailboats that can be trailered to different locations add variety and that makes learning fun. Students can learn to sail in different wind and water conditions and enjoy their boats differently on vacation or with new friends.

Learning to sail involves all the senses and requires a level head and lots of practice and although it can be learned in many ways, the best way is to start with a boat that’s small, simple, safe and durable.

Before & After

Multi-layer design.

Our multi-layer designs feature a contrasting center layer or “accent color” layer to help the letters have a visual pop even during the day when the lights are off. These layers are held together with marine-grade 5200 adhesive, and mechanically with hardware. Stainless studs which are attached to the back of the stainless steel beauty plate are used to sandwich the layers together in specific locations of each letter to ensure maximum structural integrity.

Quality Components

Our vessel signage is designed to be completely waterproof up to IP67 standards, meaning that the sign can be completely submerged underwater and continue to operate without failure. The proprietary sealing method includes redundancies for water intrusion prevention while still providing adequate heat dissipation for the LED's standard operating requirements. By reducing the thermal load, the LED chips perform flawlessly with a lifespan of over 60,000 hours.

Marine Boat Lights How-tos

Marine boat lights - types and their uses.

Any mariner or boater knows the importance of installing marine boat lights. The lighting makes the boat, yacht or any other watercraft more functional. Here we are talking about being able to maneuver the boat in the darkness, as well as seeing where you are stepping while on deck. Lights also improve the aesthetic appeal of the boat thus making it more comfy and conducive. The number and nature of lighting depend on the size of boat, nature of use, and also cost.

Notable lights are as follows:

Navigation Lights

These lights are used to indicate the vessel's position and also the direction it is heading in. This helps the boaters give way to each other hence minimizing the likelihood of a collision or accident. The lights are supposed to be put on view from sunset until sunrise. They are illuminated during periods of poor visibility for example fog. The navigation light is made up of different colored lights. These are stern light (white), combination/sidelights (green & red), and masthead (white).

Anchor Light

In many cases, the law requires sailors and mariners to install an anchor light on the watercraft. The light indicates the location of a vessel at the dock. It also alerts other boat owners that it has simply docked, and there is no problem. As part of safe boating procedures, the light is required to be bright white. This makes it easy to see the boat in the dark as well as in poor visibility.

All-Round White Light

This light is mandatory in any water vessel that is power-driven. It is visible from all direction thus indicates the position of the boat. An all-round white light may also double up as an anchor light in case the sidelights aren't functioning or have been switched off. It may also serve as a masthead light and stern light in vessels measuring less than 39.4 feet lengthwise.

Deck lights

Deck lights are used to illuminate the deck. Besides the deck, they are also installed in the cabin. The lights come in a wide assortment to cater for the varied locations they are usually mounted. They can be installed along the sides of the boat, under the roof, on the surface of the deck, and many other areas. Fixing deck lights should be done carefully so as not to degrade the overall appearance of the deck. Usually, many boaters try to match the lighting fixture with the deck.

Spreader Lights

Spreader lights are among the most popular marine boat lights. They provide illumination in various areas of the boat and also serve different purposes. Boaters use the lights to carryout general boat maintenance and service. Others use them to illuminate the water during a fishing expedition at night while others use them to provide lighting to nearby vessels. Spreader lights can also be used to provide illumination when docking. Since they are considered work lights, they are used quite often hence the need to install durable, energy efficient and effective lights.

Docking Lights

Dock or docking lights are used when approaching or leaving the dock or marina. The lights are designed to offer maximum light so as to allow a boater or mariner dock the boat in the stipulated space. They are fixed on the front part of the boat and usually come as white lights. Besides being fixed to the boat, the lights are also placed along the harbor or dock. They may be mounted on high posts and also on the surface.

Underwater Lights

As the name suggests, underwater lights are placed at the lower surface of the boat. They will therefore be near the water surface or submerged in it. The lights are used to attract water creatures especially in the night. This makes it easy to observe marine life and also when fishing. Some people install the lights to make the boat standout. Since the lights are placed near water, they come in a waterproof enclosure. Due to being more waterproof, LED lights are most popular.

Search Lights

Searchlights are used for locating something on the deck or in the water. The lights are, therefore, not used as frequently as other lights. Considering that the location has to be well lit, the lights provide a lot of illumination over a wide area. In addition, the lights can be rotated or turned to face any angle easily. Searchlights are normally placed at a central position so as to cover any part of the vessel when the need arises.

Utility/Courtesy Lights

Courtesy lights are more decorative as opposed to being functional. They will only provide a minimal amount of lighting. Furthermore, they are placed in hidden or slightly hidden places thus the brightness is seen without necessarily seeing the fixture. Common areas where the marine boat lights are fixed include under the counter, table, or on the edge of the boat. Due to their small size a number of lights will be placed within an area. LED strips and ribbons make good courtesy lights .

Flood Lights

Marine floodlights work in a similar manner to the ordinary ones. The goal is to provide high intensity light over a wide area. The lights will normally be seen in large vessels since they produce a lot of light. One floodlight is capable of lighting a large area hence no need to install other lights. However, these lights are known to consume more energy and may easily drain a small battery. The lights may also double up as docking or search lights.

Although lighting a water vessel may seem pretty simple, the impact it will have on the boating experience is huge. Proper lighting helps a person maneuver a boat in water, dock the vessel and also alert other boaters. Good lighting also comes handy when you decide to host a party in the boat or at the dock. In order to come up with a good lighting strategy, it is essential to purchase quality Marine boat lights. Iboats offers a wide variety of boat lights at an affordable price.

Navigation Lights for Sailboats (And How To Read Them)

Navigation Lights for Sailboats (And How To Read Them) | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Capt Chris German

June 15, 2022

Navigation lights on a sailboat can be confusing. If you understand the reason behind why they are the way they are however, they can make a lot more sense.

At their heart, sailboats are really just a power boat and as such must adhere to all power boat rules such as navigation lights. Other times however, a sailboat is classified in a special category. They have a set of additional lights they CAN show as an option, but are not always required to do so.

That’s about as clear as mud if you ask me and I contend that that is where the confusion about lighting a sailboat begins.

Just because you can show a light to identify yourself in times of low visibility, does not mean you have to and then we add in a little sibling rivalry between power and sail and things get downright adversarial when it comes to navigation and the night.

Table of contents

The USCG says You’re a Power Boat Whether You Like It or Not

Much to the consternation of many a sailor who has earned a commercial license to drive their sailboat, when you received your credential from the USCG it says you are a master of steam and power across the top with no mention of wind as a source of propulsion.

It is not until you read the back pages of your little red book that feels like a passport and looks like a US Sailing credential, that you will see the term “sail auxiliary”. That is because most of the time the U.S. Coast Guard knows that you are primarily reliant on your mechanical power to propel your vessel.

It's a sad thing, but the days of commercially viable sail boats are done and all but the most select few even have sails let alone use them as their primary power source. All sail boats by law are powerboats, but not all powerboats are sailboats.

Navigation Lights for a Power Boat

As a power boat, you are required to show certain lights and have been required to do so before power was even invented.

In the days of man powered vessels like the viking ships who relied on oars while in close quarters to power their vessels, they needed to show other boats, friend or foe, where they were by showing lanterns in the dark to identify themselves. As you know, it is a time honored rule among all the nations of the world both past and present, that you must avoid a collision at all costs while at sea and even the viking knew that you should not run into things.

By lighting the front and back of your boat, you could warn other boats of your presence as well as identify which way you were heading. As such there is a very specific rule in the Code of Federal Regulations Number 46 (CFR46 by common name) that spells out with detail how many, the color, the luminosity or brightness, the angle of visibility and the location of all of the lights required for navigation on every single boat, seaplane, submarine and other nondescript vessel conceived by man to date that they must show while underway in reduced visibility.

And there is no flexibility in the rules.

As such a power boat, and by extension all sailboats, MUST, without question show one green light on the starboard bow and one red light on the port bow and one all around white light or lights while operating in reduced visibility. These lights should shine at all 360 degrees of visibility with the bow lights shining at an angle of dead ahead to 22.5 degrees abaft the beam and the stern lights shining 225 degrees dead aft. A forward facing masthead light that is white in color shall shine forward to comply with the directive that all vessels must carry an all around white light. For more read here .

As you can see, there isn’t much wiggle room when it comes to lights that must be shown.

Sailboats get a little flexibility with lights

Sailboats however, are a little different when they are in fact sailboats, which is only when you are entirely reliant on the wind for power and in no way reliant on any mechanical or manual means of propulsion. And for good reason.

Back in the day when men were men and sailboats were wooden, fire was a major concern. Sails were coated with wax and other flammable substances and the wood on boats was saturated with oils and grease. Even the ropes were plant materials saturated with oils to keep them pliable and strong.

Add those highly flammable substances to a parching environment like the sea and you had what was essentially a giant floating tinderbox.

Then tell that giant floating tinderbox that they need to identify themselves to the world at large at night using oil lamps with flames because batteries and lights were not invented yet. It didn't take very long or very many ships burning to the water line for the Governments to say to the sailboats, you get to do things a little different.

As such, sailboats are given special dispensation when it comes to lights aloft. They don't have to show an all around white light in their rigging because no one wanted to set their rig on fire with oil lamps 60 feet up in their rig.

However, when a sailboat takes their sails down such as when they are powered or at anchor, they must resume the display of an all around white light or lights aloft. That became a real challenge with aluminum masts and the disappearance of rat lines on the shrouds because there was no easy way to climb the rig and check the bulbs up the mast on a regular basis.

Red over Green Sailing Machine

I have no idea where the history of this particular light comes from, but if you ever take a deck exam with the USCG, you better remember this mnemonic. An all around red light over an all around green may be displayed on a vessel during times of reduced visibility to indicate that a vessel is operating under sail power alone.

I won’t even speculate on how or why they came up with this particular light configuration, but if you want to use these lights as a sailing vessel, you can do so, but that means that you will need three all round lights at the top of your mast, an all around white, an all around red and an all around green, just in that order.

The red over green is to be displayed in addition to the running lights or the red and green bow lights with the 225 degree stern light. As always, when the motor comes on, so does the steaming light or the forward facing white light that is also usually about ¾ of the way up on your mast to complete the requirement of an all around white light that indicates a power vessel.

What is a “steaming light” and why are you mentioning it now?

Most sailboat electrical panels will have a switch that is labelled “steaming light” and it will only come on when your anchor light is off. This is probably the most confusing part of sailboat navigation lights so if you are confused about this, you're in good company as most people are.

A “steaming” light is named thusly, going back to the days of steam powered sailboats where when they fired up their boilers and doused the sails, they became a power boat once again. There aren’t too many steam powered boats, let alone steam powered sailboats, but the name stuck and it is a vestige of a bygone era.

Either way, when you fire up your motor, you turn on your “steaming light” and that locks out the all around white light which is used for anchoring to minimize the number of switches on your panel and reduce the number of wires in your mast. The fewer wires, the less chance of something not working or becoming disconnected.

The steaming light and the anchor light both go up the mast, but you can’t use an all around white light while using the 225 degree stern light at the deck level because to other boaters you would look like you have two white lights from the stern and that would be confusing.

The anchor light is used exclusively for anchoring while the steaming light is used to indicate you are a power vessel while underway.

As to why I am mentioning it now in the article, is because this would have blown your mind if I started with this subject cause it can be really confusing stuff.

Aspect Recognition with Lights

Remember when I said earlier that lights can help you tell others which way you are heading as well as tell you which way other boats are heading? That is called the aspect of the vessel and the USCG tests you on this for your deck exam as well.

Knowing that the bow lights go 22.5 degrees abaft the beam on both sides or 112.5 degrees on each side, and the stern light faces 225 degrees aft for a total of 360 degrees of visibility, you can tell a lot about where a boat is heading and who has the right of way.

One thing that's easy to remember is red means stop and if you see a vessel's red light, it means stop as you are the give way vessel and approaching the other vessel from his port side. Conversely it works with green as well as that means you are approaching from the other vessel's starboard side and you are the standon vessel.

If you see a red and green light equally low on the horizon, that means your heading dead on into another vessel's path and conversely if all you see is a white light low on the horizon, it means you are overtaking another vessel power or sail, we don’t care because it is an overtaking situation. However, any time you do see a white light aloft in addition to the red and green bow lights, you know you are encountering a power boat.

Then there are angular approaches as well, where you see white and red or white and green light low on the horizon. You know in that case you are seeing a portion of the bow lights and stern lights from the side approaches of a vessel. Based on which direction those lights are heading, you can deduce which way that boat is going in relation to your boat.

So put it all together and you see a green light and a white light low on the horizon with a red over green light aloft, you know that you are approaching a sailboat that is traveling to your port and that might make you the standon vessel. That is of course, if we didn’t concern ourselves with windward and leeward and port tacks and starboard tacks, but that is a discussion for another article. So stay tuned when we talk about sailing rules and the right of way. But for now, do good, have fun and sail far.

Disappointed

Stefanie581347515 - Jun 12, 2024

My son loved this hoodie. Unfortunately, he wore it about 10 times before the zipper broke. Then he hid it from me because he knew I'd be upset. No way something this expensive should have a zipper break like that. He has $20 hoodies with zippers that have never broken. I expected more from Nike. ...

  • Sailboat Reviews

Be sure to check out those boats built between 1978 and 1981—owners think they're the best.

By the mid ’80s, after only ten years in business, Hunter Marine had become one of the two leaders (with Catalina Yachts) in the volume of auxiliary-sized sailboats on the US market. And, like Catalina, the corporate philosophy at Hunter was to mass produce low priced boats with as few changes in tooling, hence design, as possible.

Hunter 25

As a result, Hunter until 1978 had a line basically consisting of three boats: the Hunters 25, 27 and 30, added to thereafter by smaller (20′ and 22′) and larger ( 31, 34′, 36′, 37′ and 54′) while the original three remained in production. Only after nine years production was the 25 replaced in the line (with the 25.5) and, after 10 years, the 27 (by the 28.5).

The basic marketing program of Hunter has remained remarkably consistent since it produced its first boats in 1974. That policy has made price the single most important factor in selling its boats. With the cost savings from mass production and minimum changes in tooling, Hunter has sold by far the highest volume of the lowest priced boats of their size and type on the market for the last 10 years.

Hunter Yachts came into being amid the energy crunch in the early 1970s. Silverton, a large manufacturer of smaller powerboats, expanded to build “energy-conscious” sailboats. It started with three boats, two John Cherubini-designed performance cruisers, the Hunters 27 and 30, and a Robert Seidelmann/J. Cherubini-designed small (MORC) racer, the Hunter 25.

The original Hunter 25 was a racy boat with a wedge-shaped cabin trunk that limited interior space. That space was further restricted by a design parameter for trailering, an 8′ beam.

From the outset Hunter has maintained a policy of selling its boats “fully equipped” so the original boats came with sails, dock lines and fenders, required safety gear, etc. and no factory supplied options except a shoal draft keel (in the fall of 1978 this sales policy got a name, CruisePac). Price of the 25 in 1974 was quoted at less than $8,000 with the boats reportedly being offered to dealers at closer to $6,000 in order to encourage a high sales volume.

By 1975, the desired sales being apparently unattainable with a boat as performance-oriented as the 25, the boat was offered in a so-called “pop-top” version with a more box-like cabin trunk at a price just $150 above the $8,500 tag on the standard version. The hull, rig and interior layout remained essentially the same. The following year the original model was discontinued and a box cabin trunk model without a pop-top became the standard Hunter 25.

At the same time, in keeping with the cruising image and purpose, a Yanmar single-cylinder diesel engine became an option and much was made of the increased headroom (from 5′ 2″ to 5′ 8″). Later still the transom was made more vertical (cockpit space having been at a premium and helping to cure the problem of mounting a outboard motor) and the headroom further increased.

In all over 2,000 25s were built, the exact number an oddly unavailable figure from Hunter Marine. Today they are probably the most universally recognized boat of their size and one of the most ubiquitous both in anchorages and on the used boat market, in brokers’ listings and classified advertising.

A Look at the Boat

Looking critically at a boat with the sales success of the Hunter 25 invites contention, but it does have notable deficiencies as well as notable virtues. Its virtues start with price just as Hunter Marine intends they should. When low price is a chief priority, it buys a lot of boat in a Hunter 25. This axiom applies just as much to the used 25 as it did to the new. For the entry-level sailor or one moving up into a first boat suitable for cruising, the 25 offers good livability (space, berths, enclosed head, and cookable galley), at least average performance and stability, a functional decor and styling, easily maintained (or neglected) cosmetics, and adequate structural strength for semi-protected waters. And all of this is obtainable at a price that competes with typical prices for the smaller, more cramped 23 footers of similar vintage.

On a negative side, the 25 suffers from the original narrowish beam, an unfortunate parameter since the boat never proved practical for trailering. Worse still, the shoal draft version, otherwise a desirable feature in boats of this size and purpose, does not have top-notch performance or stability. The cockpit is short and cramped for daysailing with a crew of more than three or four, and the coaming is too low for back support.

In general the Hunter 25 performs adequately. Under PHRF a fin-keel 25 rates about 222 (shoal draft, 230 or so), letting it sail boat-for-boat with the Catalina 25 and the O’Day 25, two slightly higher priced but otherwise comparable boats in size and type. Windward performance is hurt by shrouds attached at the rail and by the heavy weather helm created as the 25 heels. The shoal version further suffers from excessive leeway.

Perhaps the most serious fault of the Hunter 25 (as well as a lot of other boats of her size) is the inadequacy of an outboard motor as auxiliary power. For a “transition cruiser” auxiliary power is a highly desirable feature. At 4500 pounds with considerable windage the 25 needs engine power unavailable with outboard motors of reasonable horsepower. Add to this problem the tendency of a transom-mounted engine to lift free of the water in pitching conditions as well as the awkwardness of operating engine controls from the end of a tiller in a tight cockpit and you have persuasive arguments in favor of inboard engines in boats of this size even at the considerable additional cost.

Since, with the exception of the short-lived Yanmar option and owner-retrofitted engines (usually Saildrives), Hunter 25s are not available with inboard power, they are probably not a good choice for a buyer wanting a small auxiliary cruising boat.

What To Look For

Anyone in the market for a lower priced boat has to be more aware of possible problems than those prepared to spend more. The reasons are two-fold. In the first place, quality in boats is to a large degree a function of price. Secondly, for the less expensive boat the cost of repairs or replacement becomes a greater proportion of the value of the boat. With this in mind, we suggest looking at the following:

• A number of owners report problems with gelcoat. Crazing, voids, and porosity (pinholes that trap dirt) are commonly cited faults, especially in the deck and cabinhouse. Also, Hunter used a stippled gelcoat non-skid deck surface that deteriorates over the years. This pattern can be restored but it is not an easy task for the average owner unfamiliar with working with gelcoat.

• About half of the Hunter owners (25s and 27s) whose PS Boat Owner’s Questionnaires are in our files report at least “some” bottom blistering. Even if owner-refinished, the cost of ridding the boat of the pox could amount to 10% or more of the resale value of the boat and is unlikely to be more than tokenly recoverable in the sale price.

• Another oft-cited problem with the 25 is deck and cockpit-sole flexing. This flexing, while not a severe structural problem unless delamination has occurred, is unnerving and offends our sense of what a boat should feel like underfoot. To check for delamination (separation of the outer fiberglass laminate from the core material) tap the whole deck lightly with a hard plastic object such as the handle of a screw driver. Voids produce a dull sound.

• Play in the rudder post seems common on the 25s. Of the three we specifically looked at, 1977-1980 vintage, all had a noticeable degree of “slop” between the rudder post and the rudder tube. There is no simple or easy way to cure the ill that is more annoying than dangerous.

• Several readers report—and our findings support-the impression that 25 built between 1978 and 1981 are generally of at least a bit better quality than those built before or since. Note, however, there there can be no similar assurance that boats of that era were better maintained.

In our opinion the Hunter 25 does not recommend itself for any substantive restoration project except as it may help make the boat more enjoyable to own. With the number on the market, the basic functionality of the boat inside and out, and the low cost versus quality, expensive improvements do not produce commensurately higher value for the boat. At the same time, a polyurethane refinishing, bottom fairing (especially the iron keel), some dressing up of the decor (e.g., new berth upholstery), and a good choice of sails can do much to both the appearance and the pleasure of owning a 25.

One owner questionnaire voices the wonder of why Hunter-built boats tend to depreciate in contrast to other less popular boats. The reason is simple: the supply exceeds the demand. With the numbers built there are a lot on the used boat market. Many are also available because they were traded in on new boats, a source on the used boat market that tends to further depress selling price.

Conclusions

Frankly the Hunter 25 is best as a used boat when the most boat for the dollars is the overriding concern and, on a buyer’s market, when a good deal presents itself. Yet even then there are roomier, faster, better finished, and more distinctive boats readily available at comparable prices. One example is the Catalina 25. More importantly we think buyers should think smaller if budget constraints are crucial because they will want better performance with outboard power or they should think inboard at 10-15% higher price if needing 25′ and/or 4000+ pounds of boat.

If still otherwise sold on a Hunter 25, we would opt for a deep draft 25 for her performance and greater stability, and look for one that has had better-than-average maintenance to reduce the chances of serious problems. Whether valid or not, we’d also look for one built between 1978 and 1981—they have impressed owners as better boats.

2007 Hunter 25

The Hunter 25 offers a surprising amount of comfort and convenience in a 25-foot trailerable. The specially-designed sail plan and fiberglass hull is simple to sail, and its fixed shoal keel draws only two feet of water for excellent shallow-water launching and sailing capability. The pocket cruiser sleeps four adults, features a super convenient compact galley and an enclosed head with hard privacy doors. A true trailerable, the 25 comes with an easy mast-raising system that gives sailors the freedom to take it almost anywhere. The 1,300-pound lead keel is encased in fiberglass while in the mold, which allows unencumbered, easy trailering and outstanding directional stability. A galvanized dual-axle trailer is standard equipment. The towing weight for the package is 4,650 pounds. The 25 replaces the popular Hunter 240 and 260, long a mainstay in the company's small boat line. While the 25 may look similar to them from the waterline up, it incorporates 100% new tooling and features numerous improvements. The extended forward V-berth sleeps two, with room for two more to sleep laterally in the berth aft of the companionway ladder. A screened aft bunk hatch, along with six other portholes, provides an exceptionally bright interior, while teak trim adds warmth and richness. A teak dining table, galley sink with 10 gallon-capacity manual water system, portable single-burner stove and portable ice chest are standard equipment.

The cockpit features an open, roomy design and an open transom. An outboard engine bracket will accommodate up to a 10 HP motor. Teak stern chairs and wheel steering should be popular options. A new lever-action rudder system takes only eight pounds of force to lift and lower. The design team built in as much performance as possible into the 25, while maintaining stability and smooth sailing under varying wind conditions.

This one owner,  late model Hunter 25 has been very well maintained.  She is very clean and well equipped.  Hunter has done a fantastic job evolving their trailerable sailboat designs over the years, and the 25 really strikes a great balance of performance and comfort.  The wheel steering and large cockpit make her very comfortable and easy to sail. No need to worry about hurricane season with this boat, just put her back on the trailer and out of harms way. This boat is ready to go!

Boat Review: Hunt 25 Surfhunter CC

  • By Dean Travis Clarke

09surfhunter

Hunt Yachts in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, builds boats that fit its marquee – each one is a yacht. Every hull produced by this company turns heads (both male and female) as it passes by, attracting those with a taste for elegance as well as function. The Hunt 25 Surfhunter CC offers the same seaworthiness, classic good looks and ability to raise and catch fish found on boats much larger in size.

Performance Our test day couldn’t have been more beautiful: Sunny and calm with a gentle northerly breeze that didn’t generate any wave action even remotely challenging for the Surfhunter to negotiate. The best I could find was a large jet-powered motor-yacht, creating a 5-foot wake as it cruised past Brenton Reef Light on its way into historic Newport Harbor. Hitting that wake at cruising speed in both directions proved to be a non-event. Aligning the hull broadside to the wake to test its beam sea roll-moment, I found a short roll with very gentle transitions. Overall, the 25 Surfhunter cuts into head seas beautifully with no pounding and an extremely dry ride. I found it equally dry heading down-sea with nary a swerve at the back of the next wave.

The Surfhunter’s propulsion – an 8.1 liter, 375-hp Volvo Penta Ocean Series gas I/O – pushed her up on plane in just under 3 seconds. Wide-open throttle touched 42.2 knots at 4,850 rpm and the most economical cruising speed turned out to be a sweet spot right around 30 knots sipping a mere 13 gph.

Optional engine packages include the smaller 260-hp Volvo Diesel I/O or IB, 375-hp Volvo Ocean Series IB or a single 315-hp Yanmar diesel jet drive. I can tell you that maneuvering with the latter will amaze you. And before you say, “I have no interest in a sterndrive boat,” consider this: With the Ocean Series gas inboard coupled via a jackshaft to Volvo Penta’s nearly indestructible composite outdrive, you don’t need to worry about corrosion or hitting debris.

At dead-bait trolling speeds the boat produces an absolutely clear wake.

Our test boat reversed course in two boat lengths by leaning hard into the turn, smoothly bleeding off speed and never once pushing my passengers toward the outboard rail. When docking, you’ll surely appreciate that the Surfhunter backs up with exquisite control, again due to the counter-rotating propellers. About the only factor I didn’t like was the minor “wandering” the 25 exhibits at idle speed. Before the end of our sea trial, I had gotten used to it. And as soon as you boost the rpm slightly, it tracks straight and true.

Hunt makes its own adjustable helm and companion seats in-house and offers both seating and leaning-post configurations.

Around the cockpit, Hunt provides storage for three rods under the covering boards and two in each gunwale, with an option for more across the back of the hardtop. The transom holds a sink, freshwater washdown on a hose and a livewell.

For anyone with an appreciation for the fine yachting tradition, this little yacht overcomes the limitations of its size to epitomize the art of boatbuilding at its finest.

Is Hunter Biden going to prison? What to know about the possible sentence after his conviction

By Kaia Hubbard

Updated on: June 11, 2024 / 7:25 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — Hunter Biden was convicted Tuesday in the federal gun trial , and now a judge will have to determine whether the president's son should be imprisoned for the felony conviction .

Hunter Biden was convicted by the 12-person jury of two felony counts for making false statements on a federal gun form about his drug use, and one count for owning a gun unlawfully during an 11-day period.

The three felony counts carry up to 25 years in prison and a fine of up to $750,000. But whether the president's son is sentenced to prison — an outcome that could have been avoided with a plea deal that fell apart last year — remains to be seen.

When Biden will be sentenced and what to expect

Judge Maryellen Noreika estimated that sentencing would occur 120 days after the conviction, when she will determine whether Hunter Biden will face jail time, though she has yet to set a firm date.

The judge will likely consider a number of factors, including that Hunter Biden is a first-time offender.

Jury Finds Hunter Biden Guilty Of Three Felony Gun Charges

Tom Dupree, a former principal deputy assistant attorney general in the Justice Department, told CBS News that he does think Biden will be sentenced to prison, but more likely for a year or two, rather than a longer sentence.

Some legal experts have argued that the charges brought against Biden are rare, making the sentencing in the case difficult to predict.

Jessica Levinson, a law professor at Loyola Law School, told CBS News that it's rare for the charge to be brought as a standalone charge. And she added that she doesn't expect that the president's son will face the maximum sentence, or that the prosecution would ask for the maximum sentence. Levinson noted that "nobody should expect" to see the president's son "behind bars for a quarter century," though she made clear that some prison time is likely.

Ankush Khardori, a former federal prosecutor, wrote in Politico Magazine that gun charges are the "bread and butter" of federal prosecutors, but he explained that "these cases almost always result in convictions, but they usually end in plea deals, not jury verdicts."

Hunter Biden was set to plead guilty to misdemeanor tax charges under the plea deal , along with a pretrial diversion program on the gun charges.

Special counsel David Weiss, who brought the case against the president's son after a plea deal fell apart, said after the verdict on Tuesday that "no one in the country is above the law," adding that "everyone must be accountable for their actions, even this defendant." But he made clear that the principle applies both ways.

"Hunter Biden should be no more accountable than any other citizen convicted of this same conduct," Weiss said. "The prosecution has been and will continue to be committed to this principle."

Could President Biden pardon his son?

Though Mr. Biden could theoretically pardon his son, the president said last week  that he wouldn't do so. In an interview with ABC News, Mr. Biden said "yes" when asked whether he had ruled out a pardon for his son. He also said he would accept the verdict in the trial regardless of the outcome.

But the legal proceedings will likely continue, since Biden can appeal, likely raising a defense on Second Amendment grounds.

After the verdict, the president said in a statement that he "will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal."

Scott MacFarlane contributed reporting.

Hunter Biden convicted of all 3 felony charges in federal gun trial

Hunter Biden has been convicted of all three felony charges related to the purchase of a revolver in 2018 when, prosecutors argued, he lied on a mandatory gun-purchase form by saying he was not illegally using or addicted to drugs.

Hunter Biden has been convicted of all three felony charges related to the purchase of a revolver in 2018 when , prosecutors argued, the president’s son lied on a mandatory gun-purchase form by saying he was not illegally using or addicted to drugs.

Here’s what to know:

  • What happens next: Hunter Biden faces up to 25 years in prison , but no sentencing date has been set.
  • Reaction: Hunter Biden said he is grateful for support from family and friends but “disappointed by the outcome.” The president says he’ll accept the outcome and continue to respect the judicial process as his son considers an appeal.
  • What was the trial about? Jurors found Hunter Biden guilty of lying to a federally licensed gun dealer, making a false claim on the application by saying he was not a drug user and illegally having the gun for 11 days.

After the verdict was announced, the White House canceled press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s scheduled briefing and announced that Biden would spend the evening in Delaware to be with Hunter and other family members.

He was scheduled to give a speech on his administration’s efforts to limit gun violence and toughen enforcement of gun laws at a conference hosted by the Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund in Washington. From there, he’s traveling to Wilmington before he leaves Wednesday for the Group of Seven leaders conference in Italy.

The special counsel appointed to investigate Hunter Biden says his conviction on federal gun crimes is a reminder that no one is above the law.

David Weiss, U.S. Attorney for Delaware, spoke after a Delaware jury convicted Hunter of three felonies Tuesday related to his purchase of a handgun in October 2018.

“No one in this country is above the law,” Weiss said. “Everyone must be accountable for their actions.”

Justice Department special counsel David Weiss, whose office prosecuted the case against Hunter Biden, is expected to deliver a statement in a few minutes.

Defense attorney Abbe Lowell says they are “naturally disappointed” by Hunter Biden’s guilty verdict. Lowell said in a statement that they respect the jury process and will vigorously pursue all legal challenges that are available as they have throughout the case.

“Through all he has been through in his recovery, including this trial, Hunter has felt grateful for and blessed by the love and support of his family,” Lowell said.

“I am more grateful today for the love and support I experienced this last week from Melissa, my family, my friends, and my community than I am disappointed by the outcome,” Hunter Biden wrote in a statement following his guilty verdict. “Recovery is possible by the grace of God, and I am blessed to experience that gift one day at a time.”

Republican reaction to Hunter Biden’s verdict Tuesday was swift and varied as some called the guilty outcome overdue accountability for the Biden family while others said it represented a “veil of fairness.”

Rep. James Comer, the Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee, who has been investigating the president’s family for the last two years, said that while the verdict marked “a step toward accountability,” there won’t be justice “until the Department of Justice investigates everyone involved in the Bidens’ corrupt influence peddling schemes.”

Comer and other House Republicans have pursued an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden for the last 17 months that has failed to directly connect the commander-in-chief to his family’s overseas business dealings. Comer has taken a special interest in Hunter Biden and his various legal woes, bringing in the president’s son last year to conduct an hourslong deposition.

After Hunter Biden’s conviction, President Joe Biden said in a statement that he and the first lady will always be there for their son “with our love and support.”

The president says he’ll accept the outcome and continue to respect the judicial process as his son considers an appeal.

President Biden says he and Jill love their son and they’re proud of the man he is today.

“So many families who have had loved ones battle addiction understand the feeling of pride seeing someone you love come out the other side and be so strong and resilient in recovery,” Biden said.

Hunter Biden faces up to 10 years in prison on the first count, five years on the second count and another 10 years on the third count when he is sentenced. It’s not clear how long a sentence he could receive. The sentence is up to the judge and Hunter Biden is a first-time offender.

Judge Maryellen Noreika noted that sentencing typically is 120 days out, but no sentencing date was set.

Hunter Biden left the courthouse holding hands with the first lady and his wife, Melissa. They did not speak to reporters, got into waiting SUVs and drove off.

Hunter Biden patted defense attorney Abbe Lowell on the left shoulder after the judge’s courtroom deputy read aloud the verdict.

Biden hugged both of his attorneys and said thank you after the jurors left the courtroom. He smiled wanly at his relatives in the gallery and then hugged and kissed his wife before leaving the courtroom.

The judge has dismissed jurors.

Hunter Biden leaves the courthouse with his wife as jurors begin a second day of deliberations.

He isn’t required to stay at the courthouse while the jury deliberates, but is expected to return if the jury comes back with a note or verdict.

Jurors have convened to resume deliberations in Hunter Biden’s federal gun trial in Delaware.

The jury deliberated for about one hour on Monday after attorneys gave their closing arguments.

The judge presiding over Hunter Biden’s federal gun trial in Delaware is a former corporate civil lawyer with a background in biology who was nominated to the bench by the Biden family’s chief political antagonist: former President Donald Trump.

But even while that might raise partisan eyebrows and questions of political pressure in the highly watched case, District Judge Maryellen Noreika was recommended for the bench by the two Democratic senators.

She has a brief history of political donations to both parties — mostly Republicans — and had not worked on criminal cases or presided over a courtroom before getting the nod as a federal judge. The New York Times reported she was registered to vote as a Democrat from 2000-2020 until changing her registration to no party affiliation.

President Joe Biden’s son is charged with falsely denying on a federal firearms form that he was a drug addict when he bought a handgun in October 2018. He is charged with two felony counts of making a false statement related to the purchase of a firearm, and a third felony count of illegally possessing a gun while being an unlawful user of drugs.

If convicted in the gun case, he faces up to 25 years in prison, though first-time offenders do not get anywhere near the maximum.

Hunter Biden’s lawyers have sought to show he was trying to turn his life around at the time of the gun purchase, having completed a rehabilitation program at the end of August 2018. The defense called three witnesses, including Hunter’s daughter Naomi , who told jurors that her father seemed be improving in the weeks before he bought the gun.

And the defense told jurors that no one actually witnessed Hunter Biden using drugs during the 11 days he had the gun before Beau’s widow, Hallie, found it in Hunter’s truck and threw it in a trash can.

Prosecutors spent last week using testimony from his ex-wife and former girlfriends , photos of Hunter Biden with drug paraphernalia and other tawdry evidence to make the case that he lied when he checked “no” on the form at the gun shop that asked whether he was “an unlawful user of, or addicted to” drugs.

“He knew he was using drugs. That’s what the evidence shows. And he knew he was addicted to drugs. That’s what the evidence shows,” prosecutor Leo Wise told jurors in his closing argument Monday.

The trial began last week in Delaware’s federal court, with prosecutors seeking to show that Hunter Biden was addicted and regularly using drugs during the 11-day period when he bought and owned the gun. Hunter Biden’s defense team sought to show that he did not consider himself an “addict” when he filled out the form, and said he was trying to turn his life around at the time.

Family Turns Out to Support Hunter Biden as Jury Is Selected in Gun Trial

The president’s son is on trial in Wilmington, Del., on three charges that he lied about his drug use on a federal firearms application in 2018. The unusual prosecution carries stiff penalties: up to 25 years in prison and a $750,000 fine.

Follow our live updates of Hunter Biden’s trial in a gun case.

Jill Biden, wearing a purple blazer and scribbling on a white legal pad, sat in the first row of a drab fourth-floor courtroom on Monday in a show of support for Hunter Biden, whom she raised as her son, on the first day of his trial on federal firearms charges.

The first lady, who followed hours of mundane interviews with dozens of prospective jurors before the panel was selected on Monday afternoon, rose to her feet when the judge called a short break about halfway through. She walked slowly over to him, offered a long hug, then stroked Mr. Biden’s cheek.

The opening hours of jury selection in Mr. Biden’s trial on charges that he lied about his drug use in applying to buy a handgun in 2018 were, as expected, a high-stakes political spectacle — with a throng of reporters crowding the courthouse while TV crews did live shots, nearly nonstop, after sunrise.

But the presence of Mr. Biden’s family and friends, including his wife, Melissa Cohen Biden, his half sister, Ashley Biden, and his close friend Kevin Morris, served as a reminder that the trial was also a profound personal crisis for a family that has had more than its share of travails — in the middle of the most unforgiving presidential campaign in recent memory.

“Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today,” President Biden said in a statement issued after the proceeding began.

“Hunter’s resilience in the face of adversity and the strength he has brought to his recovery are inspiring to us,” added Mr. Biden, who spent Sunday night with his son at the family house in Wilmington. “Our family has been through a lot together, and Jill and I are going to continue to be there for Hunter and our family with our love and support.”

But the trial is also expected to air less flattering details of Hunter Biden’s family life.

The special counsel overseeing the prosecution, David C. Weiss, has signaled that he will call Hunter Biden’s former wife, Kathleen Buhle, who is locked in a long legal battle with him over unpaid alimony, according to prosecutors.

A top deputy to Mr. Weiss, Leo J. Wise, has filed court papers indicating that he also plans to call Hallie Biden, the widow of Hunter Biden’s brother, Beau. Ms. Biden was dating Hunter Biden when he bought the handgun at issue in the case.

By late afternoon, Judge Maryellen Noreika had seated the jury: four Black men, three Black women, three white women and two white men.

The selection process also provided an unexpected glimpse into the insular cultural and political microclimate of Delaware, one of the country’s smallest states, where encounters with the first family were so commonplace as to be almost unremarkable.

One potential juror, a former police officer, matter-of-factly told the judge that he had once worked with Dr. Biden at a local college. Just when it seemed he had passed muster, he let slip that he had supported Ferris Wharton, who unsuccessfully challenged Beau Biden for Delaware attorney general in 2006.

“Next juror, please,” Judge Noreika said, with a slight grin.

Last September, a federal grand jury charged Hunter Biden with three felonies: lying to a federally licensed gun dealer, making a false claim on the federal firearms application used to screen applicants and possessing an illegally obtained gun for 11 days, from Oct. 12 to Oct. 23, 2018.

If convicted, Mr. Biden could face up to 25 years in prison and $750,000 in fines. But nonviolent first-time offenders who have not been accused of using the weapon in another crime rarely get serious prison time for the charges.

Legal experts say it is more likely a sentence could include a central element of the original plea deal — mandatory enrollment in a firearms diversion program intended to reduce incarceration rates for the least serious gun crimes.

Mr. Biden, his legal team and his family are hoping to turn the court’s attention away from his actions during a long period of out-of-control drug and alcohol use to the more universal experiences of families affected by relatives with substance abuse problems, and Mr. Biden’s recent success in staying sober.

Many of the would-be jurors spoke emotionally about their own families’ struggles, with one man breaking down in tears when he talked about a brother-in-law who had been addicted to drugs.

Another juror candidate shared a relative’s history with substance abuse and how it had made her more sympathetic with other people experiencing similar problems.

“It’s a disease, and I don’t look down on that,” she said as Hunter and Jill Biden craned forward in their seats to listen intently. “People have problems.”

Mr. Biden has been sober for years and has written about his difficulty with crack addiction and alcohol dependency in his memoir, which is likely to be used as evidence. Over the past year, the president’s son has submitted to drug testing and passed, according to his lawyer Abbe Lowell.

The gun charges are related to whether Mr. Biden had lied on a standard form issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives when he bought a .38-caliber pistol. Prosecutors said he falsely claimed he was not taking drugs at the time. Mr. Biden had the gun for under two weeks, he has said, before Hallie Biden tossed it in a dumpster, fearful that he would use it to harm himself.

It is relatively rare for such gun charges to be brought against a first-time, nonviolent offender like Mr. Biden, unless it is being used as leverage for a confession on other crimes, such as drug trafficking, current and former prosecutors have said.

The gun trial is only the first of two Mr. Biden is facing.

Last month, the federal judge in Los Angeles who is presiding over his tax case agreed to push the start of that trial from later this month to Sept. 5, giving Mr. Biden’s lawyers time to prepare.

While the move came as a relief to the president’s son, it thrusts into the homestretch of the campaign season a trial that is likely to highlight Hunter’s Biden’s efforts to leverage his family’s name into profit.

Mr. Biden has pleaded not guilty to charges of evading a tax assessment , failing to file and pay taxes, and filing a false or fraudulent tax return.

Judge Noreika, an appointee of President Donald J. Trump, tightly controlled her courtroom on Monday, much as she did during the hearing that ended Mr. Biden’s plea agreement last July, and showed every indication of wanting to move things along as quickly as possible.

She swatted down Mr. Lowell’s attempt to disqualify two potential jurors — hours after delivering two small but significant setbacks to Mr. Biden’s defense.

She has also ruled that Mr. Biden’s lawyers cannot refer to the fact that the local authorities declined to prosecute him when the gun was recovered. She also blocked Mr. Weiss from making any reference to the tax case when presenting evidence in Delaware.

For his part, Mr. Biden sat through the jury selection sternly, wearing reading glasses and taking notes.

But when the judge called for the midday break, he sprang from his seat like a student hearing the end-of-day bell, flashed a grin and began fist-bumping and hugging the people who had shown up to support him.

What to know about hunter biden's criminal trial.

  • Hunter Biden , President Joe Biden's only surviving son, was found guilty on all three charges tied to the possession of a gun while using narcotics. The jury reached the verdict after only three hours of deliberation yesterday afternoon and this morning.
  • Two of the counts carry maximum prison sentences of 10 years, while the third has a maximum of five years. Each count also carries a maximum fine of $250,000. U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika said she will set the sentencing date at a later time.
  • The list of those who were called to testify last week includes Hallie Biden, the wife of Hunter Biden's late brother, Beau Biden; Gordon Cleveland , the man who sold Hunter Biden the gun at the heart of the case; and Hunter Biden's daughter Naomi Biden. Hunter Biden did not take the stand.

NBC News reporters covering Hunter Biden’s federal gun trial in Delaware share how they used signs and binoculars to relay news of the guilty verdict from the courtroom, where no electronics were allowed, to their team outside.

Source describes 'extraordinary moment' as Hunter Biden thanked family and attorneys after verdict

Sarah Fitzpatrick

In the defense room after the verdict, Hunter Biden made some remarks, thanking each person in the room by name, according to multiple people who were in the room.

“It was an incredible human moment,” one person said, “it was an extraordinary moment that everyone around him in those minutes after the verdict will always remember.”

Hunter Biden expressed that he was incredibly grateful for and proud of everyone involved — and that no one could have done a better job than Abbe Lowell and his team of attorneys and that he will be forever grateful to them.

The most emotional moment was when Hunter talked about how much he loves his mother and father, and his wife, Melissa Cohen-Biden — his voice almost cracked.

One source said: “I think the most important thing this prosecution has shown is that we need to reconsider how we enforce the laws around drugs and alcohol in this country. This prosecution is a really stark example of how antiquated the justice system is with regard to these issues and the exercise of fair prosecutorial discretion is a vital part of our judicial system. You have to treat like cases alike or it does not work, and unfortunately this applies not just to Hunter but to millions of Americans who have faced the scourge of addiction.”

The sources expressed how proud they were of Hunter Biden and his continued sobriety.

Juror tells Fox News that Jill Biden's presence in the courtroom didn't affect proceedings

Juror #10 told Fox News in an interview that he was "nervous" when it came to time to deliberate, but that in the end, it helped to focus on "just why" the president's son "was on trial."

"I think he’s just like anybody else," the juror said. "Nobody’s above the law, no matter who you are."

"So that did not play a factor in my decision," the juror said, adding that the decision to convict "was not politically motivated."

"Politics played no part in this whatsoever," the juror said. "We just went by the rules."

The juror added that it was not a factor that first lady Jill Biden, and other members of the Biden family, were present for the trial.

"I was aware of it," the juror said. "But no. Once we went into the jury room, we didn’t. We didn’t discuss anything. We didn’t discuss the family."

House Speaker Mike Johnson say verdict was 'appropriate'

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., says he thinks Hunter Biden being found guilty is “appropriate."

Johnson has been very critical of the guilty verdict against Trump in the former president's New York case. But when asked if his take on the Biden case undercuts his argument that there is a two-tiered justice system, Johnson replied, “It doesn’t."

"Every case is different, and clearly the evidence was overwhelming here. I don’t think that’s the case in the Trump trial, and all the charges that have been brought against them have been obviously brought for political purposes," Johnson said. "Hunter Biden is a separate instance.”

Former President Donald Trump’s argument about the “weaponization” of the justice system just ran smack into a Delaware jury’s conviction of President Joe Biden’s son Hunter.

The result, according to some Republicans, is a major blow to one of Trump’s favorite talking points — and a boost to Biden’s case that he respects the rule of law.

“Hunter Biden’s conviction definitely weakens the argument,” said Dan Eberhart, a major Republican donor who backs Trump and thinks he should be focused on the economy rather than court cases. “To me, the justice system is working.”

Special counsel David Weiss says Hunter Biden gun case was about his 'dangerous' conduct amid his battle with addiction

hunter 25 yacht

Summer Concepcion

In brief remarks to the media after the verdict, special counsel David Weiss said the gun case against Hunter Biden was about the “dangerous” decisions he made as he battled addiction, including lying on the government form that he used to buy a gun.

“Ultimately, this case was not just about addiction, a disease that haunts families across the United States, including Hunter Biden’s family,” he said.

“This case was about the illegal choices defendant made while in the throes of addiction, his choice to lie on a government form when he bought a gun and the choice to then possess that gun. It was these choices and the combination of guns and drugs that made his conduct dangerous.”

Weiss then stressed that no one in the country is above the law, including the president’s son.

“Hunter Biden should be no more accountable than any other citizens convicted of this same conduct,” he said. “The prosecution has been and will continue to be committed to this principle and to the principles of federal prosecution and carrying out its responsibilities.”

Weiss thanked the jury, prosecutors Derek Hines and Leo Wise, and Attorney General Merrick Garland for “providing the support necessary” to carry out the prosecution’s investigation.

Weiss did not take questions at the end of his statement, saying that his office has additional trials and investigative work ahead.

Juror says president 'never came into play' during deliberations

Juror #10 spoke to CNN after the verdict and suggested it was hard for Naomi Biden to testify about her father.

“No daughter should ever have to testify against her dad," the juror said, although Naomi Biden was, in fact, a witness for the defense.

“President Biden never really came into play for me because his name was only brought up once during the trial, and that’s when it kinda sunk in a little bit, like, oh, wow, this is the sitting president’s son who’s on trial," the juror added. "So, yeah, that was kind of hard, to know what the trial’s about now. But you kind of put that out of your mind."

Trump campaign says trial was a distraction

The Trump presidential campaign said in a statement, without evidence, that the Hunter Biden trial has been nothing more than a distraction from other wrongdoings.

"Crooked Joe Biden’s reign over the Biden Family Criminal Empire is all coming to an end on November 5th," said national press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

The GOP impeachment inquiry in the House has not found any evidence tying the president to his son's business dealings.

Hunter Biden gives a slight smile after exiting the defense room with his wife and first lady Jill Biden

Prosecutors Derek Hines and Leo Wise exited the courtroom with slight smiles and declined to comment to NBC News.

As they waited for the rest of the Biden family to leave the defense room, a few family friends that had been there throughout trial sat outside the courtroom on a bench with their arms folded. One appeared to have tears in their eyes.

“Prepare for departure for all parties” was heard over a U.S. Marshal's radio.

Outside the defense room, a group of about eight Secret Service agents and U.S. Marshals conferred with one another before the defense room door opened.

Hunter Biden could be heard saying, “Ready? OK. Hey guys, come on,” and then he exited the defense room holding hands with his wife, Melissa Biden-Cohen. First lady Jill Biden followed a few steps behind with her sunglasses on, looking at the floor. Hunter Biden addressed her as “mom” as he helped escort the first lady into the elevator, and gave a slight smile as the elevator doors closed in front of him.

Shortly after, U.S. Marshals called out to “secure this hallway,” and a moment later we saw each juror walk past as they were escorted to a stairway.

Hunter Biden and lawyer Abbe Lowell release statements on verdict

In a statement reacting to the verdict, Hunter Biden said, “I am more grateful today for the love and support I experienced this last week from Melissa, my family, my friends, and my community than I am disappointed by the outcome. Recovery is possible by the grace of God, and I am blessed to experience that gift one day at a time.”

His lawyer Abbe Lowell said the defense team is "naturally disappointed."

"We respect the jury process, and as we have done throughout this case, we will continue to vigorously pursue all the legal challenges available to Hunter," he said. "Through all he has been through in his recovery, including this trial, Hunter has felt grateful for and blessed by the love and support of his family.”

Trump ally says verdict undercuts arguments of a two-tiered justice system

Another Trump ally told NBC News about the verdict, “I think this won’t matter a ton, but it undercuts the argument of a two-tiered system of justice.”

“That said, the more that argument exists and is pushed, the worse it is for Trump,” the Trump ally said. “It’s too close to threats to democracy and drives that issue — the only issue where Biden enjoys a lead.”

An NBC News poll from April found that 28 percent of registered voters said they would vote for or against a candidate based on how they are protecting democracy or constitutional rights.

President Biden to speak at previously scheduled gun safety event hours after son is found guilty on gun charges

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden is set to address gun safety and his administration’s steps to reduce gun violence in a speech Tuesday at an annual conference on the issue —  hours after his son was found guilty  on gun-related charges by a federal jury in Delaware.

He’s scheduled to headline Everytown for Gun Safety’s annual training conference, Gun Sense University, in Washington at 1:30 p.m. ET. The group said that the conference brings together volunteers and survivors of gun violence from across the country “to share best practices, participate in training sessions about effective organizing and prepare for the crucial work ahead.”

The Biden-Harris 2024 presidential campaign released a memo ahead of the president’s speech touting the administration’s accomplishments to decrease gun violence.

“Fighting for a safer America — an America that does its part to save more lives from gun violence — is on the ballot this November,” said the memo from campaign senior spokesperson Kevin Munoz.

Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., the chair of the House Oversight Committee, praised the jury’s verdict finding Hunter Biden guilty on three charges tied to possession of a gun while using narcotics.

President says he ‘will always be there for’ his son and accepts the outcome of the case

President Joe Biden again expressed his support for his son and maintained that he accepts the outcome of the case.

“As I said last week, I am the President, but I am also a Dad," the president said in a statement after the verdict was delivered. "Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today.”

“So many families who have had loved ones battle addiction understand the feeling of pride seeing someone you love come out the other side and be so strong and resilient in recovery.”

“As I also said last week, I will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal,” he added. “Jill and I will always be there for Hunter and the rest of our family with our love and support. Nothing will ever change that.”

Republican strategist says verdict undercuts Trump's claim that Biden controls the DOJ

A Republican strategist said the Hunter Biden verdict undercuts some of Trump's talking points that President Biden controls the Department of Justice.

“It at a minimum slows the momentum and the clear-cut argument that the Trump campaign previously had about Biden’s weaponization of the justice system," the strategist said. “It’s less of a bumper-sticker than it was before.”

Trump posted on Truth Social over the weekend, "I truly wish people would remember that all of these 'trials' are concocted and run by the Crooked Joe Biden White House, and DOJ, for the purpose of Election Interference and damaging Crooked’s Political Opponent, ME, as much as possible. These are not legitimate trials, they are merely part of an illegal POLITICAL WITCH HUNT the likes of which our Country has never seen before! MAGA2024."

Hunter Biden nodded slightly as the verdict was delivered

As the courtroom awaited the verdict, the alternate jurors came in and were seated by the defense. U.S. Secret Service agents and the U.S. Marshals were huddled in the center aisle and were seen conversing.

Hunter Biden sat down and drank water after entering the courtroom, and he looked down and appeared to be taking notes as he waited for the foreman to deliver the verdict.

Biden looked straight ahead at the jury and nodded slightly as the guilty verdict was read.

Afterward, he shook hands with some of the associates seated behind him, hugging one of them. He then smiled and hugged his lawyers Abbe Lowell and David Kolansky.

When Hunter got up, he kissed his wife, Melissa Cohen-Biden.

Summary of defense's case in the Hunter Biden gun trial

Hunter Biden’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, has argued that prosecutors had fallen short of proving that his client had deliberately lied about his drug use in October 2018 when he submitted a federal form to pass a background check to purchase a gun.

During the trial, Lowell sought to poke holes in prosecutors’ arguments that Biden was an active drug user around the time that he obtained the gun in question, suggesting that his client did not consider himself a drug user or addict at the time. He argued that the wording in some of the questions on the form left room for his client’s denial of being a habitual drug user.

In his closing argument, Lowell pushed back against the prosecution’s citations of Biden’s book, which was published in 2021 and detailed his experience in being an addict, to bolster their argument that Biden knowingly lied about his drug use. Lowell told jurors that it was “unfair” of prosecutors to use quotes from the book about being an addict without context.

Verdict reached in Hunter Biden's trial

A verdict has been reached in Hunter Biden's trial.

Here's what the prosecution has said about Hunter Biden

Prosecutors have accused Hunter Biden of using or being addicted to crack and that he knew it when he bought the gun from the Wilmington, Delaware, gun shop in October 2018.

They also argued that the false statement on the ATF form, in which Hunter Biden didn't check the box asking whether he was addicted to or using controlled substances, was intended to or likely to deceive the gun sellers.

“The central issue in this case, and that is the evidence has established beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant was an unlawful user of and addicted to a controlled substance when he bought the gun on Oct. 12, 2018, during the period when he possessed it from Oct. 12 to Oct. 23, and for more than six months after," prosecutor Leo Wise said in his closing arguments yesterday.

He continued: “He knew he was using drugs. That’s what the evidence shows. And he knew he was addicted to drugs, that’s what the evidence shows.”

Wise argued that maybe if Hunter Biden hadn't been to rehab or hadn't been using crack for a long period of time, then maybe he wouldn't have been aware that he was addicted to drugs. But, Wise said, evidence shows Biden was using drugs in Malibu at the end of September, two weeks before he bought the gun.

The prosecutors argued that the law doesn’t require that he used the controlled substance or controlled substances at the precise time he possessed the firearm.

Prosecutors relied on testimony from Hunter Biden's ex-wife, Kathleen Buhle, Beau Biden's widow, Hallie Biden, with whom he had a romantic relationship, another ex-girlfriend Zoe Kestan, as well as an FBI agent, among others.

Hunter Biden's wife is the only family member with him this morning

Melissa Cohen-Biden is the only Biden family member sitting in the front row — the first time there has been no other family since the trial started.

Here's the language on the jury verdict form

The language on the jury verdict form says:

  • As to Count One, charging the defendant with making a false statement in connection with the acquisition of a firearm, we the jury find the defendant:
  • As to Count Two, charging the defendant with making a false statement with respect to information required to be kept in records, we the jury find the defendant:
  • As to Count Three, charging the defendant with possession of a firearm by a person who is an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance, we the jury find the defendant:

The foregoing constitutes the unanimous verdict of the jury.

Here's what the president has said about his son and the case

As we await the verdict in Hunter Biden’s gun trial, President Joe Biden has repeatedly expressed support for his son while declining to comment on the case.

  • The president has said he will accept the verdict regardless of the outcome

Asked whether he will accept the jury’s verdict in the case during an interview with ABC News last week, the president replied, “Yes.”

“And have you ruled out a pardon for your son?” ABC News’ David Muir asked. “Yes,” Biden said.

  • Biden expressed support and confidence in his son at the beginning of the trial

On the first day of the trial, Biden said in a statement that he and first lady Jill Biden are “proud of the man” Hunter Biden is, noting his “resilience in the face of adversity and the strength he has brought to his recovery” from his past struggles with substance abuse.

The president also declined to comment on the case, but stressed that he has “boundless love” and confidence in his son.

“Our family has been through a lot together, and Jill and I are going to continue to be there for Hunter and our family with our love and support,” the president said.

  • The president has maintained that his son did not commit wrongdoing in the case

“Your son, while there’s no ties to you, could be charged by your Department of Justice. How will that impact your presidency?” MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle asked Biden last year.

The president said, “First of all, my son has done nothing wrong.”

“I trust him. I have faith in him,” he said. “It impacts my presidency by making me feel proud of him.”

Jury resumes deliberations

Jurors entered the courtroom at 9:05 a.m. and began deliberating shortly after.

Jury deliberations will enter a second day at Hunter Biden’s federal gun trial where they will decide if he was lying on a federal background check before purchasing a gun. It comes after grueling testimony with close members of his family in the court room. NBC’s Ryan Nobles reports and Laura Jarrett provides analysis on "TODAY."

Here's what to expect at trial today

Matt Korade

The jury will continue deliberations today when the court comes back into session at 9 a.m.

Jurors were handed the case yesterday afternoon after prosecutors and the defense finished their closing arguments. The jury deliberated for about an hour before being sent home for the day.

Many of Biden's family members and friends have attended the trial to show their support, including first lady Jill Biden; James Biden and Valerie Biden Owens, President Joe Biden's brother and sister; Hunter's sister Ashley Biden; and his wife, Melissa Cohen-Biden.

Here's what you missed on Day 6 of Hunter Biden's criminal trial

Jurors in Hunter Biden’s gun trial began deliberating Monday after they heard new evidence from a witness about his drug use in October 2018, around the time he is alleged to have illegally purchased a firearm.

Prosecutors rested their case after they told jurors that Biden was a “habitual” user of drugs from 2015 to 2019, a period that overlaps with his gun possession, and that he knew he was an addict and even wrote extensively about it in his memoir.

His lead defense attorney, Abbe Lowell, said that while Biden may be an addict, prosecutors had not proven that he knowingly lied beyond reasonable doubt on the form he used to buy the gun.

“With this very high burden, it’s time to end this case,” Lowell said.

Jury deliberations began in Hunter Biden’s federal criminal trial after prosecutors laid out what they called “overwhelming” evidence against the president’s son as he faces gun charges. NBC News’ Ryan Nobles has the latest.

Some La Jolla residents are growing frustrated with the state of the former site of a Jack in the Box at 564 Pearl St. But the lot’s status won’t be changing anytime soon. The property, which contains the vacant former fast-food restaurant, has been unoccupied since being purchased by the adjacent Bishop’s School in September 2021. The school’s plan has been to lease out the site in the short term and later convert it for student use. It is currently fenced off and used for school bus parking. Area resident Mary Montgomery, a former manager of the La Jolla Maintenance […]

Demi Moore on Full Frontal Nudity With Margaret Qualley in ‘The Substance’: ‘A Very Vulnerable Experience’ but I Had a ‘Great Partner Who I Felt Very Safe With’

CANNES, FRANCE - MAY 19: Demi Moore and her dog Pilaf attend a photocall at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival at the Carlton Cannes Hotel on May 19, 2024 in Cannes, France. (Photo by Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images)

Demi Moore ‘s new film, the feminist body horror “ The Substance ,” sees her bare it all, with several scenes featuring full nudity. At the Cannes Film Festival press conference for the film on Monday, the 61-year-old actor discussed the “vulnerable experience.”

“Going into it, it was really spelled out — the level of vulnerability and rawness that was really required to tell the story,” Moore said. “And it was a very vulnerable experience and just required a lot of sensitivity and a lot of conversation about what we were trying to accomplish.”

“I had someone who was a great partner who I felt very safe with. We obviously were quite close  — naked — and we also got a lot of levity in those moments at how absurd those certain situations were,” she said. “But ultimately. it’s just about really directing your communication and mutual trust.”

As the film progresses, Moore becomes horribly disfigured thanks to the abuse her other half Qualley is inflicting on her. By the film’s last act, she quite resembles Anjelica Huston from the 1990 film “The Witches,” after she transforms into a humpback abomination.

Dennis Quaid also stars in the film as an “asshole,” as he described his character during the presser. The late Ray Liotta was meant to have the role before his passing in May 2022, and Quaid dedicated his performance to him.

“In my heart, I dedicated this role to Ray Liotta, who was set to play it,” Quaid said. “It was this week, two years ago that he passed, so I’d like to remember him. He was such an incredible actor.”

Cannes went wild for “The Substance” at its premiere on Sunday night, giving the film an 11-minute standing ovation , the longest of the fest so far.

In an interview with Variety , the French director discussed the film’s feminist themes, saying that body horror is “the perfect vehicle to express the violence all these women’s issues are about.”

With an undercurrent of #MeToo at this year’s festival as the movement grows in France, Fargeat hopes the film will shine even more light on the issue. “It’s a little stone in the huge wall we still have to build regarding this issue, and to be honest, I hope my film will also be one of the stones of that wall. That’s really what I intended to do with it.”
