Catamaran test (by a monohull sailor): Dufour 48

dufour 48 catamaran test

I have a confession to make. I never thought I’d say this, but as a dyed-in-the-wool monohull sailor who has spent many years both privately and professionally railing against the rise of catamarans, I think I’ve been converted – and it’s all thanks to the new Dufour 48.

With global yacht cruising demand shifting in favour of catamarans, helped by technical leaps and vastly improved designs, it was only a matter of time before traditional monohull builders branched out and took the plunge into the murky world of twin hulls. Perhaps, inevitably, after its takeover by Fountaine Pajot last year, Dufour is at the vanguard of this group with the 48 .

On first impressions, the Dufour 48 is certainly striking. Her clean, sweeping lines are as attractive as any you’ll find on a modern cruising monohull, and the dreadnought bow stands out against a backdrop of boxy catamarans from the traditional yards. There have also been hints at a greater performance level than we’re used to seeing in many cats of this size. In short, she looked both beautiful and fast.

dufour 48 catamaran test

Sailing performance

And so it proved. The Umberto Felci-designed hull is slick and very quick – we weren’t always blessed by the wind gods on this test, but did manage to get her doing 6.2kt in 9kt of breeze at 60 degrees, and she was very responsive to helm. This fast hull has the added benefit of fuel efficiency – we easily reached 8.8kt at 2,000 RPM, which is promising for long windless days.

dufour 48 catamaran test

The hull also handles chop surprisingly well for a cat, with none of the seesawing motion usually associated with two hulls.

dufour 48 catamaran test

The version I tested was in a four-cabin layout, with a utility room in the starboard hull, complete with washing machine, worktop and ample storage space. While this was a welcome innovation, it did reduce the size of the forward heads significantly.

The cabins were, on the whole, nice and spacious, with plenty of storage space – which is exactly what a yacht this size needs, whether on charter or privately owned. The forward cabins had island beds – a real boon and something that makes them far more spacious than similarly-sized rivals.

Perhaps the biggest leap forward is the simplification of the electrical systems – everything was centralised to a main control panel. The galley has an island layout, with ample storage and surface space for meal prep, and an appealing openness about it.

The Dufour 48 is predominantly aimed at the charter market, and so concessions have been made to amplify comfort over performance, but she still maintains a real seaworthiness.

The flybridge is aesthetically pleasing and creates a huge open space ideal for socialising and enjoying a sundowner. That said, the helm station could use an extra winch, and would be much improved with better storage for the various halyards and lines that can easily clog it up. The forward day beds are excellent and large. The large ultra anchor our test yacht was equipped with was a real boon, and inspired absolute confidence that it would hold wherever we dropped and whatever the conditions.

dufour 48 catamaran test

I tested one of the first 48s off the production line, hull number 9, and it was clear there were some minor teething issues that need ironing out. In the words of a classic school report, Dufour have made a great start, but could try harder, with room for improvement in the details. The concept is excellent, it just feels a little rushed in the execution. Not bad for a first attempt. Probably an A+ for effort, B+ for achievement.

Dufour’s sailing pedigree shines through in many aspects of their new catamaran. The sleek lines and fast hull position her at the sailing end of the production cat spectrum, while the accommodation is comfortable enough to seriously rival the competition. It appears Dufour has identified a gap in the market between the ever-popular Lagoon 450 and the Bali 5.4 that needed filling, and has filled it well with a concept that stays true to its reputation for superb build quality and seaworthiness while adding a touch of comfort and style.

dufour 48 catamaran test

With its lovely lines and good performance, the Dufour 48 may actually be the ideal catamaran to convert inveterate monohull sailors – well, it certainly worked its charms on me.

Multihull of the year

Initially designed as a charter boat, the takeover of Dufour by catamaran specialist Fountaine Pajot in May 2018 changed the fate of this 48-footer. Instead of becoming the unwanted orphan of the mighty Fountaine cat empire, its molds and yard space in northern Italy, run by JJL Catamarans in Forli in northern Italy, was bought by Croatian charter company Under the Heavens. We got the chance to test hull #29, the first unit to arrive in Australian waters.

Sailing around the world can have a profound effect on sailors, as it did for monohull dealer Matt Hayes. The former Olympic sailor and successful Sydney boat dealer came to a few conclusions during that 30-month circumnavigation, done on a 56- foot Dufour monohull. “ Everywhere we went there were cruising catamarans! ”  This fact reflected the strong market for them, both in power and sail varieties. “So when the opportunity came to get this Dufour catamaran dealership, we jumped at the chance,” explained Matt as we talked aboard the first example to arrive in Australia. As a former Dufour monohull dealer, he knows well the flair of designer Umberto Felci, so had confidence in taking on this catamaran, despite the Italian being relatively new to the concept. For this initial model Felci collaborated with his company co-founder Lorenzo Giovannozzi.

Dufour 48 Catamaran Review

Exactly one year ago, during the Parisian boat show Nautic Paris 2017, the French shipyard Dufour announced the launch of the new brand Dufour Catamarans and the first model of the Dufour 48 Catamaran catamaran. The scale model, 3D video and virtual tour, specially created for the event, attracted a large audience, surprised and enthusiastic about Dufour's new project. It is worth noting that this is not entirely new territory for the shipyard, for some time they owned the Nautitech shipyard. And shortly after the launch of the project, the shipyard became part of the Fountaine Pajot empire.

The architects of the project were  Umberto Felci and Lorenzo Giovannozzi,  who have been cooperating with the shipyard since 2002. Known for their technical skills and foresight, they were able to develop a modern, elegant and innovative design in line with the philosophy  Dufour yachts ... Work on the project has continued over the past few years, while the demand for catamarans has increased more and more every season.

To ensure maximum safety and ease of handling, the mast has been moved back along the centerline of the boat to balance the weight and limit the tension on the mainsail. Headsails are larger and offer new possibilities, especially the use of an automatic staysail, with a sail area comparable to that of a genoa.

Total sail area of the catamaran Dufour 48  is 124 m2, the mainsail area - 72 m2 and the staysail area - 48 m2 - a combination that makes it easy to steer the boat in any situation.

Specifications:

Besides,  tilt boom which scores well on monohulls  Dufour , facilitates the lowering of the mainsail and ensures the safety of the crew on the flybridge.  Fixed bowsprit offered as an option will support zero or gennaker code.

During the development of the project, the model of the catamaran passed performance tests and various studies, in particular,  CFD analysis , which was carried out at the earliest stages. This critical analysis showed the excellent hydrodynamic qualities of the catamaran. The entire boat structure has been analyzed and every detail checked in detail  finite element method (FEM) .

Dufour 48 catamaran  represents a balanced ratio of space with the deck plan, cockpit space, roof and bow, divided by 1/3 of the total length. The proportion of the roof differs from the models in this category and provides a very wide living space. Really,  Dufour 48  Is a testament to a balanced design in terms of external and internal space, designed to provide maximum comfort at any time of the year.

In the bow  there are two zones with sunpads, separated by large lockers. The side decks are spacious and protected by hulls along their entire length. There are two steps at cockpit level, one on the port side and one on the starboard side, allowing easy access to the flybridge.  Flybridge   Dufour 48  is a key element of this project. Designed as a second cockpit, it greatly expands the outside space. It is equipped with a low table and is surrounded by large seating and a wide area with sunpads.

Also installed on flybridge  control post like a superyacht that provides an absolute advantage in terms of visibility. Large console, integrates all equipment into a very ergonomic configuration. Three winches for mainsail, staysail and gennaker are within arm's reach. The helmsman's seat is adjustable and the bimini is available in both soft and hard material.

Functional cockpit  works as an extension of the living area of the catamaran. Cockpit space  Dufour 48  can be compared to the cockpit of a 50ft boat or larger. The catamaran's width of 8 meters ensures excellent distribution of space and free movement on board. The cockpit has a large table for 8 people, several areas for swimming and relaxation, as well as the famous integrated barbecue, first introduced by the shipyard  Dufour yachts ... A solution that was subsequently adopted by almost every shipyard producing cruise yachts.

Various portholes provide incredible natural light in the aft cabins. The large glass door opens completely into the interior. Two options are available for dinghy operations, davit and hydraulic platform. Fully integrated into the hull and deck design, both systems guarantee weights of up to 450 kg.

Dufour 48  has been designed to meet the needs of both owners planning to live on board all year round and charter companies. The idea of a large living room was a necessity and the result was achieved to perfection.  Galley connected to the cockpit, fully functional and ergonomic, equipped with numerous storage lockers. Ahead is the navigation post, chartplotter, and autopilot with joystick to control the boat from the inside.

Dining area with sofa in salon  can be modulated in 3 positions - low table, dining table, double bed - full transformer. The 360 ° panoramic window facing the sea provides plenty of natural light. The storage modules are varied and well designed, as the large console with drawers shows, ready to accommodate whatever you need.

Occupying the entire hull on the port side, the owner's suite will seduce at first sight the most persistent. The cabin is equipped with a bed measuring 2 x 1.7 m, very light and well ventilated thanks to the numerous opening windows. It also includes a large study with sea views and comfortable wardrobes and drawers. Ladies will be delighted with a huge dressing room and a large sofa. The bow of the cabin, where the bathroom is located, meets the highest standards: sink on the countertops  Corian , light lockers and a large separate shower.

Dufour 48  introduced an unusual configuration for accessing guest cabins. To guarantee maximum privacy for each living space, the main solution was to make different access to the floats - two stairs on the port side and a third staircase on the starboard side. Thus, all cabins have completely separate access and remain accessible from the saloon. Each cabin includes its own bathroom with separate shower, as well as a variety of cabinets and storage lockers. Ventilation and lighting are also perfectly thought out.

Test drive of the catamaran Saona 47

According to the functional needs of the large yacht, the technical room of the catamaran  Dufour 48  has tremendous added value. This space can be used as an additional galley, pantry, laundry room and many other functional spaces according to your needs and operating plans.

3 and 4 cabins versions  - both are equally functional and comfortable. The skipper's cabin is equipped with a 1.90 x 1.15 m bed with its own bathroom and shower. The main access is through a hatch on the bow deck, but if necessary, the float entry remains accessible.

If you are looking for more space on board, a large-sized monohull might be the right option for you. The Dufour Catamarans 48 (14.70 x 7.96 m) in particular. Despite its French name, the boat was developed by an all-Italian design team and built in Forlì

Dufour Catamarans 48 – Test

Certainly an excellent debut in the world of catamarans for Dufour (and a longseller, considering that the boat has been in production for over five years). The shipyard entrusted the design to Umberto Felci who, together with Lorenzo Giovannozzi, has created an elegant, innovative boat with great is attention to detail. Designed as a cruising catamaran, Dufour Catamarans is however a highly versatile boat.

In fact, this catamaran is designed to serve a dual purpose: to satisfy both the charter market, which is the primary destination, but also the private market by giving it the possibility of being configured in several interior layouts.

I think the operation has been a great success for Felci Yachts. We tested it in Tuscany, at Cala de Medici, at Marina Yacht Sales , a Dufour Catamarans dealer for Italy and France.

Video – On board the Dufour Catamarans 48

Hull and Deck

The first thing that stands out from the dock is the clean, elegant line of the hull. The inverted bows also stand out, seeming only to tell the wave to come forward without fear. The fenestration on the side is well defined and beautiful to look at, not intrusive even though it breaks up the line of the hull.

Dufour Catamarans 48 lines

Volumes are decisive on a catamaran but they must be harmoniously integrated into the naval architecture or else lose seaworthiness. Thus the considerable but not exaggerated dimensions of the two stern platforms say a lot about the Cat’s seaworthiness as a favourite place for bathing and relaxing with one’s feet in the water. The system for lowering and hoisting the tender is designed to be manoeuvred by one person. Comfortable although perhaps a little too massive, it ensures weights of up to 450 kg, just like the version with the hydraulic stern platform. The cockpit gives the idea, as is more and more often the case, of being an extension of the Cat’s dinette. Comfortable seating and ample space promise the owner and his guests wonderful days at sea spent in comfort while sailing and relaxing at anchor. The fixed barbecue in the stern is a solution that has more or less been adopted by all shipyards since then! The outdoor table seats up to eight people comfortably. The seats are also lockers and run on three sides of the table, leaving the area towards the stern free to facilitate manoeuvring. Despite the numerous accessories, freedom of movement is always ensured thanks to the eight-metre width of the 48. You almost want to run… but don’t! The hull and deck are made of fibreglass. Structural bulkheads make staying inside the cabins pleasant to the ear. Exploration continues towards the bow along wide walkways well protected by the bulwark to the first step in which a light porthole for the hull below is well shaped.

Dufour Catamarans 48

At the bow are two double sunbathing areas integrated into the hull and the trampolines, a characteristic and emotional trait of the Cat. Felci Yachts has decided to lower and bring forward the deckhouse so as to have more space for the Fly but also in the interior and have a more attractive line. Returning to the stern there are two beautiful access ladders on both sides that lead to the Flybridge, which is very spacious and is the jewel in the crown of this design that makes the roofs an important living area. The Fly is the ideal place to enjoy a nice evening with friends thanks to the seating that runs around the perimeter and the adjustable table, but above all thanks to the presence of a fridge. The bimini is appropriate for the space underneath and can be ordered in either fabric or rigid. Just beyond what is to all intents and purposes a second cockpit is a large sunbathing area.

Dufour Catamarans 48 – Rigging

The helm station is on the Fly and this certainly offers an advantage, as it allows the entire boat to be kept under control; very important when the skipper brings an inexperienced crew. The helm station offers all the instruments one could wish for. The engine throttles are very comfortable and you can manoeuvre the boat with complete peace of mind. Track located outside the rear seats of the fly. Two winches behind the helmsman and two electric ones beside the console. Stoppers block the lines but when sailing you have to be organised as with open sails it gets a bit messy and you feel the lack of a pocket for the lines. Shaft set back to optimally balance the weight. The mainsail is about 72 square metres and the boom can be tilted for safety reasons with guests on board. The jib on a self-tacking trolley increases ease of steering. The boom can be requested and used to hoist Gennaker or Code Zero.

CFD analysis or rather, numerical fluid dynamic analysis. This test simulates water flowing along the hull; we can thus understand what the hydrodynamic qualities are and how they can be improved. The main effort that Studio Felci and Dufour Yacht had to cope with was certainly the high level of product engineering in order to be able to mass produce it. Saildrive for the two inboards and hull lines give this Cat good performance both under sail and motor.

Dufour Catamarans 48 Sea Trial

This catamaran is primarily aimed at the charter market and the design is heavily influenced by elegance and comfort. Despite this, the Cat maintains a good performance range compared to similar catamarans. Our test day began with… unmooring, a delicate operation that is often carried out by two people on charters, if not just one. In this case, if you want to do it alone, you have to be really adept at manoeuvring to let go of the rear moorings and the topsails. Better in two, one at the unmooring and the other at the helm. We leave the Cala De’ Medici Marina and immediately find the conditions typical of the Mediterranean Sea in summer… zero wind and flat sea. Not too bad. We test the engines! The hull is well-designed and fast, which gets us up to a speed of around 8.5 knots at about 2000 rpm. Consumption is average. Excellent considering the cost of fuel at the time of writing. Finally, after a couple of hours, we find about ten knots waiting for us. We open the mainsail and jib and go to the edge of the wide windward mark and almost to the side to test both speed and hull on the waves. The Cat does not slam and passes with ease over the wave, reaching the not inconsiderable speed of 6.5 knots. For a cat designed for cruising, the performance is good and the boat is responsive to the controls. We tack and set off to the side but the wind drops suddenly even though the results in very light winds remain above average. Our test for today ends here.

Flexible and customizable, the Dufour Catamarans 48 can be requested in 3 layouts: 3 cabins and 3 toilets in which one hull is completely dedicated to the owner, 4 cabins and 5 cabins with a crew cabin with bathroom and external access. Our test is on the 5-cabin. The idea I got on board was of a boat with several spaces interconnected in an intelligent and functional way. The feeling is that despite the twelve people on board, privacy is also guaranteed by the staggered hull access stairs, one to port and two to starboard. The dinette is illuminated thanks to an elegant blacked-out window that allows natural light to do its work.

dinette

The C-shaped kitchen with peninsula is comparable to that of a house, equipped with oven, microwave, stove, lots of storage space and a dishwasher. Also in the dinette and in a position in front of the glass entrance doors we find the chart table to which some instruments can be returned. To the side is the control panel where we can control utilities and gather information about the boat. In the cabins we find windows in the broadside that, like those in the dinette, allow light to enter naturally.

Dufour Catamarans 48 cabin

The cabins are air-conditioned and have an enviable double bed. Well-designed spaces allow you to unpack and never think about it again. Private bathroom with shower and lockers for stowing necessities. Crew cabin finally not so small and cramped! Last but not least, a sail locker in the port hull accessible from the outside.

Dufour Catamarans 48 – Our impressions

The Dufour Cat 48 is an unusual cruiser in terms of both customisation possibilities and living space. You sail in a cosy environment, designed to be home for a week or all year round. I really appreciated the space and the technical solutions. Felci and Dufour have done a lot and for a pathfinder I would say that the experiment is more than successful.

Dufour 48 Catamaran Vs. Lagoon 50

Catamaran comparison, in this article, we compare the lagoon 50 and the dufour shipyard’s first catamaran dufour 48., multihulls have been growing in popularity for the past years, and there is no sign of catamarans stopping their conquest anytime soon.

Major brands known for their monohull production have now a dedicated line for multihulls. In this article, we compare the Lagoon 50 and the Dufour shipyard’s first catamaran Dufour 48.

The popularity of catamarans can be explained by their stability, maneuverability and comfortable and spacious living areas. They are great for chartering . In case you are unfamiliar with the two brands or the catamaran models in question, here’s a brief introduction.

Dufour Yachts & the Dufour 48 Catamaran

Dufour is known for following new technologies and using innovative materials. A model of the Dufour Catamaran was revealed at Paris Boat Show 2017, the global launch at the Cannes 2019 in-water boat show. It is designed by Umberto Felci and Lorenzo Giovannozzi. According to Michel Dufour: “We have developed this project with the vision to match an elegant and comfortable catamaran with outstanding sailing abilities.” Since then a lot has happened: the catamaran became immensely popular in the charter market with its many social areas and unique customizability and layout options. In 2020 the yard in Italy was bought by a new owner with strong ties to the charter market and a new vision was put in place: one where the yard is focusing on developing more models (45-52ft) in the range and with a focus towards the private ownership market.

Lagoon Catamarans & the Lagoon 50

Lagoon is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of cruising catamarans. The brand values freedom and lifestyle, resulting in elegant and comfortable yachts. Designed by Nauta Design and Patrick le Quément. Unveiled in 2017, the Lagoon 50, along with the 40, 42 and 46 represent the latest generation models designed by the world leader in cruising catamarans. When she was first launched, she fitted into the range between the best-selling Lagoon 450 and the 52. Her ambition was to remain accessible to a family crew and offer maximum comfort.

The Objective Comments:

The Dufour catamaran has a contemporary design with voluminous hulls. The reversed and narrow bows cleave the water efficiently.

In order to ensure maximum safety and easy handling, the mast was pulled back on the centreline of the boat in order to balance the weights and limit tensions on the mainsail.

The aft placed mast allows larger headsails, and the boom is more angled than in Dufour’s monohulls, for easy access to the boom.

Dufour is famous for its great comfort and outdoor living areas. The catamaran doesn’t fail, as it comes with a large flybridge with stairs access from both starboard and port sides. At the back, there is a wide L-shaped sofa, and in front of the helm, you’ll find a double sunbed. The helm station is placed on the starboard side of the flybridge with a standard seat that takes one person (option for double seat) is compact with winches nearby. Visibility around the boat is sufficient and the view both bows and starboard stern is easy from the helm.

At the back of the Dufour 48, there are wide stairs from the water level on to the cockpit and side decks. The spacious layout gives the impression of a bigger catamaran. The cockpit is an extension of the living room – a lounge area to starboard and seating for eight to port. The cockpit is fitted an optional plancha and has a centrally mounted bench with storage longside the cockpit dining table. There are two options for dinghy lifting: standard davits or a hydraulic platform.

At the bow, there are two double sunbeds just in front of the coachroof. Additionally, there are two small trampoline sections just aft of the cross beam. From the bow you can access the storage lockers, sail lockers or even the optional skippers cabin (bunk bed with ensuite wc/shower).

Our Comments:

The Dufour 48 truly differs in the way that the hull and overall aesthetical design of the yacht is more sleek and sporty. Whether this has an effect on the performance or not, is not so important, as the Dufour 48 is still used by many owners today in charter ownership or as a liveaboard yacht.

Along with the mast configuration of the modern Lagoons, so too does the Dufour 48 offers a self-tacking jib and larger sail ratio and than many other heavier flybridge catamarans.

The flybridge sticks out on the Dufour 48, and different from the Lagoon 50, the yacht has a full flybridge with an upright seating area with table units and a sunbathing area at the portside of the helm. The Flybridge is the centerpiece of the catamaran and with its many options and the fact that the shipyard is open to customising to its owner, gives you the freedom to truly have your own unique catamaran on the market.

The cockpit is wide and feels wide, with just the right amount of seating areas and easy access around the deck, into the saloon, and up to the flybridge. The Dufour 48 also has a dedicated forward-facing cockpit, more consider to be a lounging space than an actual seating area.

The Dufour 48 has a somewhat different positioning of the beds and hull windows in the cabins compared to the Lagoon 50. So the perspective of the surroundings and light entering the cabins are different than that on the Lagoon 50.

Lagoon 46 exterior1

Lagoon 50   Exterior

The Lagoon 50 is designed to be a well-balanced live aboard catamaran easily managed by a family that requires social spaces and conformt above performance. The hulls are optimized for form and volume with vertical bows.  On the Lagoon 50 you will find a somewhat different flybridge than on the Dufour 48 with two secure accesses and a helm station provides perfect visibility. And behind the helm station, a huge modular recreation area conceals a storage area large enough to store all the cushions. The Lagoon 50 offers a large open cockpit facing out to sea, large stern skirts that enable easy access to the boat, and a large modular dining area with removable bench seats to welcome children and adults alike.

At the bow of the Lagoon 50, you will find a second cockpit for the further enjoyment of the foredeck with dual functions: seating or deck chair position, flush with the forward trampoline. The Lagoon 50 and the Dufour 48 a catamaran offer vast storage space under most of the cockpit and flybridge seats.

The flybridge on the Lagoon has two functions with sunbeds and the helm station – a balance between comfort and steering . Compared to the single helm seat on Dufour 48, the Lagoon has wide sunbeds with adjustable backrests in two rows and a lot of storage units. While the steering wheel and the seat might be too far apart to drive while sitting down, they are too close for allowing walking past the helmsman. The winches are located on port side, which means one has to leave the steering position.

Lagoon’s one level cockpit at the back gives safe and easy access to the sea. The space is designed to accommodate up to 12 guests. There is a deep double bench at the back and an eating area with an L-shaped sofa on the port side. On starboard side, there is an outdoor galley and a lounge bench, wide and deep for two persons. Similiar to the Dufour 48, the Lagoon 50 comes with a dedicated area for the plancha. For hoisting the dinghy, here are also two options: single davit system or Tenderlift platform.

50 feet – or almost – and nearly 8 tons of payload: the characteristics of the Lagoon 50 make it an ideal catamaran for bluewater cruising with all the comforts. The design and intention behind the Lagoon 50 are to make it manageable by a family.  While larger models are most often entrusted, in practice, to a professional skipper, the Lagoon 50 and then Dufour 48 are both well designed to be manageable for a family crew.

As with the rest of the range from Lagoon, and different to the Dufour 48, the yard is validating their concept of a very slender, aftset rig – the mast is stepped on the coachroof, not forward of it. The idea is to optimize weight centering – and thus reduce pitching – while giving the self-tacking jib a respectable amount of sail area. As you can see, the Sail Ratio is close to similar to the Dufour 48 despite having a larger displacement.

The yard has opted for a helm station on the flybridge. – centered. Thanks to the electric winch, setting the sails doesn’t require much effort. Almost all the maneuvers are controlled from the flybridge, spread across winches and clutches that are accessible for the helmsman. The helm is direct, and in our experience and from test reviews from our colleagues, we can report that the boat responds well and always goes through the wind, even without much way on.

As with the Dufour 48, the Lagoon 50 offer a 360 view from the Flybridge. The difference between the flybridge of the Dufour 48 and the Lagoon 50, is that the helm is of course centered but also the flow and entrances to the flybridge is unhindered by any angle on both sides of the Lagoon 50. The social area for the guest are similarly located behind the helm for both the Lagoon 50 and the Dufour 48, however, on the Lagoon 50, the social area is seemingly more modular and versatile with a lot of “hidden” storage compartments for your cushions or items you would normally only use on the flybridge or at operating the yacht at the helm.

From up on the flybridge, the view of the water, the bows and the sail plan are perfect (objective). On the other hand, the bimini hides both sterns. The yard offers a canvas cabriolet bimini top and a hard top or even a park-avenue boom (canoe-boom), all to make it easier to handle the mainsail.

Overall, both the Lagoon 50 and the Dufour 48 are therefore well-suited for family use. The only downside is that for when checking a reefing line, or when flaking the mainsail: the height of the boom can demand some acrobatics – hence the interest of the canoe-boom option, which makes it easier to stow the sail… and any moving around while “aloft”.

In light airs, the Lagoon 50 performs correctly, as long as the Code 0 is unfurled. We insist heavily on the interest of this sail, which is essential to get the yacht going when there are less than 10 knots of true wind.

Similar to the Dufour 48, the deck layout of the Lagoon 50 gives pride of place to areas dedicated to relaxing: the cockpit, is protected by the bimini, and the table, to port, can be doubled in size, to seat up to 12 guests. A full galley/ wet bar allows meals to be prepared outside. Not found on the Dufour 48 but certainly incorporated elegantly is the extra galley option, plancha and extra storage unit in the aft cockpit of the Lagoon 46. The plancha makes total sense if you have ever had a bb2 on a yacht, as it’s possible to swing the plancha outwards to the sugarscoops and thereby you are standing more comfortably while bbq your dinner. The deeper double benches at the aft also provide more comfort and storage than on the Dufour 48.

The hydraulic platform allows the tender to be stored and offers, in addition to the sugarscoops, everything you need to enjoy a pleasant anchorage. General circulation on deck is particularly neat: wide steps and sidedecks (with a shortcut from the cockpit), and as mentioned before – the easy access from both sides to the flybridge. And as for seating, between the aft benches, the forward sunbathing area and the flybridge sunbeds, there’s plenty to choose from.

Compelling headline goes here

dufour 48 cabin bed

Dufour 48   Interior

The Dufour 48 has a 360-degree loft-style saloon connected to the cockpit. On the port side, you have fully equipped galley with lots of storage space at the back, an island in the middle and an adjustable L-shaped sofa in the front. At starboard front corner, there is an office space that functions as a navigation station . A plotter screen and autopilot controls make it possible to drive the boat from inside. Thanks to the sliding glass doors and large windows, you can enjoy plenty of natural light and fresh air .

What comes to accommodation, there is room for up to 12 overnight guests . You can choose between three to five cabins and up to five heads. The starboard hull has two cabins and heads as well as day head and a service room. It’s possible to transform it into a single bunk cabin. The cabins have own entrances that ensure privacy for guests. The port hull either has an owner’s cabin and a possible crew cabin or two double cabins mirrored to starboard hull. All the cabins have a lot of daylight coming in through many windows and hatches.

Our Comments

Similar to the Lagoon 50, the Dufour 48 offers a 360 view from the saloon with large sliding doors to the aft cockpit, providing even more natural light and airflow. The windows facing the front cockpit have hatches to create a direct communication path and also increase ventilation in the saloon. The Dufour 48 also shares the same design concept around creating a centered countertop unit with storage around the mast that comes down in the center of the saloon.

The galley is well designed for the purpose of live-aboard, with plenty of storage found throughout the saloon and with countertop space found around the center unit of the mast and along the starboard side of the saloon. Similar to the Lagoon 50, the Dufour 48 has a large u shaped sofa with a modular table for dining or to serve as a coffee table.

The Dufour 48 has some interesting layout options as well as a wider selection of interior wood and upholstery than the Lagoon 50. The Dufour 48 comes as a 3 cabin/ 4heads; 4 cabins/ 4 heads, and the 5 cabins / 5 heads version with the additional Skippers cabin accessed from the deck of the starboard bow.

The owner’s version 3 cabin with 4 heads configuration is particularly interesting for the navigator that likes a true liveaboard catamaran as it’s equipped with a utility room located midship on the starboard and also has a day-head. In the owners’ cabin (on the port side) you will find, in addition to the smaller navigational seat in the saloon, a desk space with plenty of storage, to serve as your office or work desk. Similar to the Lagoon 50, the Dufour 48 has a lateral shower and a separate toilet facing the bow of the catamaran.

One noticeable difference between the Dufour 48 and the Lagoon 50 is found entering the cabins on the starboard. Dufour 48 has the unique feature of a double and separate entrance to both of the guest cabins on the starboard, something more commonly found in larger catamarans.

Down in the cabins, the beds on the Dufour 48 are positioned a bit higher than on the Lagoon 50. So when you are laying in the bed, you are directly looking out of the hull windows at your surroundings.

As with the Lagoon 50, the Dufour 48 is flooded with natural light through its many deck hatches and larger hull windows.

Lagoon 50   Interior

Lagoon 46 interior3

In the interior of the Lagoon 50, you will find a large saloon with a large u-shaped sofa facing the bow of the yacht. The saloon has ample storage units, modular seating arrangements, and a large galley with enough countertop spaces to host larger dinner parties or just to not feel cluttered living aboard with your family.

Both the Dufour 48 and the Lagoon 50 offers various layout options, from 3 cabins to 6 cabins, 3 bathrooms up to 6 in total, with or without skippers cabins.

The nacelle, as on all Lagoons, provides maximum volume and excellent protection against solar radiation thanks to the vertical windows. You’re immediately won over by the amount of interior light, the almost panoramic view and the overall quality of the finish. This configuration is undoubtedly a consequence of the mast support strut, itself affixed to a central unit of furniture, similar to that of the Dufour 48. The U-shaped dining area is set well forward. To starboard, the chart table is a good size, oriented facing aft, as opposed to the Dufour 48, where it has its own place and seat facing forward on starboard.

The yard offers 3, 4 or 6 cabins. The first version sees the entire starboard hull available to the owner with a queen-size bed with plenty of storage space, a walk-in wardrobe like at home, a desk, and finally an large bathroom with two basins.

With the option of the Elegance Line – you receive an even heightened feel of luxury than the Dufour 48 or its closest competitors in Bali 4.8 and Fountaine Pajot Tanna (Saona).

In the Lagoon 50, you will find that in general there are a few more storage spaces, neatly designed as part of the furniture. The galley is better supported for more home appliances and storage units up above. Another difference between the saloons of the Dufour 48 and the Lagoon 50 is the depth of the sofa and also the large hatch/window facing the forward cockpit.

The front and aft cabins are identical and always with separate heads and showers en suite. The combination of functionality and elegant finish gives you an impression of a luxury hotel room . The cabins are very spacious and comfortable, thanks to the specially formed hulls with extra width above the waterline.

A unique feature of the Lagoon 50 is the walk-in closet found in the owners’ cabin. In combination with the option to install a separate cabin on the portside, this could present the ideal set-up for a family that is considering to liveaboard as the extra cabin could serve as utility room or function as an extra sleeping area without intruding on the other social areas when having extra guest onboard.

The overall volume of the hulls in combination with the abundance of innovative and elegant solutions to store and equipped the yacht with all the appliances and equipment you need to be totally of the grid makes this one of the most ideal liveaboard catamarans on the market.
