Sir Robert Ogden, whose famous mauve and pink checked silks were carried to success over jumps by such stars as Voy Por Ustedes and Exotic Dancer before he switched his attention successfully to the Flat, has died at the age of 86. A self-made and proud son of Yorkshire who built his fortune initially through the quarrying, building and mining industries, Ogden became one of the first developers to spot the potential in London's Docklands. A generous donor to charities in Yorkshire, notably those connected to palliative care for cancer, he was awarded a knighthood in 2001. Long-serving racing manager Barry Simpson described him as "a great supporter" of both racing codes who "gave a lot of opportunities," while Nicky Henderson recalled "wonderful times" with "lovely horses". After becoming champion owner for the first of three occasions in 1997, his jumps string became even more prominent in the first decade of the new century. "The most exciting couple of days of racing we had was at the end of the 2001 season, and last two days at Sandown," said Simpson. "He was trailing the late Norman Mason by a good £150,000 or so and we had a great run, with Fadalko finishing second to Edredon Bleu, Marlborough winning the substitute Gold Cup and then Ad Hoc winning the Whitbread the following day. It was tremendously exciting and it went down to the very last race." As well as Marlborough – the first of Ogden's four Cheltenham Festival winners – Henderson also enjoyed great success with horses such as Iris Royal and The Market Man. He said: "We had some wonderful times and they were lovely horses. I used to go and stay up at Sicklinghall for York or to go and see the horses out in the fields. He lived a very, very full life. "The horses and the racing were his passion and we were very lucky to be involved. I know he went Flat racing in the end, but I think he was a National Hunt man through and through, he loved his jumping." Voy Por Ustedes and Star De Mohaison pulled off the Grade 1 novice chase double in the Arkle and Royal & SunAlliance Chase at the 2006 festival, while Voy Por Ustedes became Ogden's most decorated chaser at the top level, adding the 2007 Queen Mother Champion Chase, the 2009 Ascot Chase and a pair of Aintree Melling Chases to his CV. "He used to say to me that he wanted to win a Gold Cup, but he also really wanted to win an Arkle and a Queen Mother Champion Chase," said Simpson. "Those were two races that were very high on his agenda, and Voy Por Ustedes won both." Exotic Dancer joined Voy Por Ustedes as the joint-highest-rated horse to carry Ogden's colours and would undoubtedly have won more big races but for his misfortune to share a stage for much of his career with the likes of Master Minded and Kauto Star. Ogden supported Martin Todhunter almost as soon as he left Gordon Richards to train in his own right, and the partnership enjoyed early success when Ogden's son Adam landed the Grand Military Gold Cup on Act The Wag at Sandown, before the classy Kingsmark went on to become a standing dish in major staying chases. "After the Grand Military we won the Durham National, the Borders National and were fourth in the Scottish National," said Todhunter. "He'd tell you how he thought it was and he didn't like what he called bullshit. He just wanted the truth, and that's how we got along fairly well." Todhunter added: "Kingsmark was fourth in the English National when Ruby rode him and he went wrong crossing the Melling Road, otherwise I think he might have won that day." A year earlier Kingsmark won the three mile handicap the day before Red Marauder ploughed through the Aintree mud to win the National. Todhunter said: "He was quite a shy man and when Kingsmark won, all the hierarchy at Liverpool were running round after him and said to me: 'Martin, let's go to Cartmel and have a proper drink, I'm sick of all this'. He never took the limelight, he always stepped back." Ogden's first love may have been the jumps, but he kept a select string of Flat runners throughout his time as an owner and enjoyed Albany Stakes successes with La Chunga and Sander Camillo in the mid-2000s. They were both trained by Jeremy Noseda, who went on to provide the owner with a cherished Classic success through Sans Frontieres in the 2010 Irish St Leger. Obituary: successful businessman who became a leading owner over jumps and on the Flat Ogden spent a large part of his later life trying to escape the harsh British winter aboard his luxury yacht La Masquerade, and sold his jumping string in 2013 to concentrate on the Flat. He was rewarded when homebred Amazing Maria enjoyed a phenomenal run in the summer of 2015, having joined David O'Meara following a layoff. "We had a great year with Amazing Maria and I'd been training for four seasons by then," said O'Meara. "Group 1 winners are important at any time but she was the best mare around that year. "She won the Duke of Cambridge and the Falmouth and then she went to France. Ervedya was beating everything over there at the time and Maria properly put her in her place at Deauville." Ogden is survived by his second wife Lady Ana Ogden, and by two sons Adam and Robert Alan from his first marriage.

Sir Robert Ogden dies aged 86

Businessman and philanthropist hit the heights under both codes as a racehorse owner

Sir Robert Ogden, whose famous silks enjoyed many big-race successes on the Flat and over jumps, has died aged 86.

The Yorkshireman, who made his fortune in the quarrying and mining business before moving into property development, focused on the National Hunt scene initially, having been encouraged to get involved in ownership by his friend and neighbour Jack Hanson.

Sir Robert also bought a share in the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner See More Business, owned jointly with Paul Barber and trained by Paul Nicholls.

While he had enjoyed his fair share of Flat winners during his high-flying days over jumps – La Chunga and Sander Camillo were both Pattern-race winners in 2006 while Sans Frontieres claimed the 2010 Irish St Leger – Sir Robert decided to concentrate on the summer game and sold his jumps horses in 2013.

Thomas Chippendale was a Royal Ascot victor in 2012 and 2013 but undoubtedly his best runner was homebred filly Amazing Maria, a dual Group 1 winner in 2015 in the Falmouth Stakes and Prix Rothschild.

Sir Robert, the eldest of six children, was renowned for his donations to charities, including cancer research, and was awarded his knighthood in 2001.

Perhaps the greatest indication of Sir Robert’s character is evidenced by the care he provided for his former racehorses in retirement. Squire Silk, his first Grade 1 winner over jumps, passed away in August last year at the grand old age of 32, having lived at Sir Robert’s Sickling Hall Stud since he finished his racing career in 1999.

Sir Robert is survived by his second wife Lady Ana and sons Adam and Robert from his first marriage.

Racehorse owner knighted for his charity work dies aged 86

The Yorkshire racehorse owner, businessman and philanthropist Sir Robert Ogden died on 6 March, aged 86.

Born in Bradford, Sir Robert founded the Ogden Group in the late 1950s with his three brothers, working in quarrying, building and mining. He became interested in racing through his friend and former racehorse trainer Jack Hanson. The pair later co-owned horses together, including Sir Robert’s first major winner Winter Melody, who took the 1978 Imperial Cup.

Sir Robert’s racing and breeding operation at Sicklinghall Stud, founded in the late 1970s, expanded, and in 1997 he was crowned National Hunt champion owner, a success he repeated in 2000 and 2001.

Among his most successful horses were the 2007 Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Voy Por Ustedes, trained by Alan King, the 2007 Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up Exotic Dancer trained by Jonjo O’Neill and the Nicky Henderson-trained Marlborough, who gave Sir Robert his first Cheltenham Festival winner, in 2000.

He later switched his interests to the Flat. His winners included 2010 Irish St Leger victor Sans Frontieres, trained by Jeremy Noseda, and his home-bred multiple Group One winner Amazing Maria, trained by David O’Meara.

Sir Robert was known for his generous work in charity, for which he was knighted in 2001. He supported Macmillan Cancer Support for more than 50 years, and played a leading role in transforming cancer care in Yorkshire. In 2000, the Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre opened in Leeds, followed by a centre in Harrogate in 2014 and Northallerton in 2018.

He is survived by his second wife Lady Ana Ogden, his two sons Adam and Robert Alan from his first marriage and four grandchildren.

Rupert Murdoch Marries for the Fifth Time

Mr. Murdoch, the 93-year-old media mogul, married Elena Zhukova, a retired molecular biologist, Saturday at Moraga, his Bel Air vineyard estate in Los Angeles.

Rupert Murdoch, dressed in a black suit, hugs Elena Zhukova, his wife, who is carrying a bouquet of white flowers and wearing an off-the-shoulder white dress. Behind them are potted plants and greenery surrounding the windows of a house.

By Tammy LaGorce

Rupert Murdoch, who retired from the boards of Fox and News Corporation last year , walked down an outdoor aisle under blue skies to exchange vows on Saturday with Elena Zhukova, his fifth bride, at Moraga, his Tuscan-style vineyard estate in the hills of the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Ms. Zhukova, 67, carried a bouquet of white flowers and wore an ankle-length, off-the-shoulder white dress with a square neckline, reportedly designed by the London-based designer Emilia Wickstead ; Mr. Murdoch, 93, wore a dark suit with sneakers. Notable guests caught by paparazzi on the way into the ceremony included Robert K. Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots, and Robert Thomson, the chief executive of News Corp.

The couple met through Mr. Murdoch’s third wife, Wendi Deng, according to The Daily Mail , which first reported their relationship last summer. Ms. Zhukova is a retired molecular biologist who immigrated to the United States from Moscow in 1991, just months before the Soviet Union collapsed. She was previously married to Alexander Zhukov, the billionaire energy investor.

There have been few public details about the couple’s courtship, with representatives for Mr. Murdoch staying mum, but The Daily Mail reported that shortly after meeting, Mr. Murdoch and Ms. Zhukova spent weeks vacationing together in the Mediterranean aboard the Christina O, a yacht that once belonged to Aristotle Onassis. Their engagement was announced in March.

Mr. Murdoch’s fifth marriage comes after a called-off engagement to Ann Lesley Smith, who is a retired dental hygienist and a conservative radio host. Last spring, he proposed to Ms. Smith but broke off the engagement after less than a month.

Ms. Zhukova’s marital history is less well documented. She met her first husband, Mr. Zhukov, now a British citizen, when both were students in the Soviet Union. Their marriage, during which they had a daughter, the entrepreneur and socialite Dasha Zhukova , lasted three years, according to The New Yorker.

A first walk down the aisle for Mr. Murdoch came in 1956, when he married Patricia Booker, a former flight attendant and model. They had a daughter, Prudence, before divorcing in 1967.

That same year, he married his second wife, Anna Maria Torv, then a journalist at one of his Australian newspapers. That union lasted 32 years, and they had three children: Elisabeth, Lachlan and James. All have worked for their father’s global empire; last year, Lachlan Murdoch was named Mr. Murdoch’s sole successor, becoming responsible for steering the media company his father started building from a small local newspaper in his native Australia 70 years ago. Mr. Murdoch maintains an emeritus role.

In 1999, when Mr. Murdoch and Ms. Torv divorced, he and his third wife, Ms. Deng, a television executive born in China, married. They had two daughters, Grace and Chloe, and divorced in 2013. He met Jerry Hall, who is a model and actress, the same year. They married in 2016 and had no children together before divorcing in 2022 .

Mr. Murdoch and his family have a net worth of nearly $20 billion, according to Forbes . His publicly traded company News Corp owns a portfolio of news outlets including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Post, The Times of London and Sky News Australia, as well as the book publisher HarperCollins. According to The Cut , Ms. Deng and Ms. Hall both signed prenuptial agreements before marrying Mr. Murdoch.

Moraga, the wedding venue, is where Mr. Murdoch first hatched his 2019 deal to sell most of Fox’s movie studio, FX and National Geographic to Disney. He bought the estate in 2013 for a reported $29.5 million . Among its former owners is the director Victor Fleming, whose credits include “The Wizard of Oz” and “ Gone With the Wind.”

When he retired in September, Mr. Murdoch told employees in a letter that for his entire professional life he had been engaged daily with news and ideas. “That will not change,” he wrote. “But the time is right for me to take on different roles.”

An earlier version of this article erroneously included a media organization among News Corp’s portfolio of businesses. Fox News is part of Fox Corporation, not News Corp.
